emocratic socialists took the polls by storm on Primary Day June 23, with a slate of insurgents earning nods in some competitive, high-stakes races.

Among them was state Assemblymember Claire Valdez (D-Sunnyside), who pulled out a victory in the crowded Democratic contest for New York’s Seventh Congressional District. She defeated three fellow competitors, most notably Brooklyn Boroug h P resident A nton io Reynoso, who was backed by the Working Families Par ty, the Queens Democrats and incumbent U.S. Rep. Nydia Velá zquez (D-Brooklyn, Queens) herself.

“When we fight, we win,” Valdez said in a social media post Tuesday night, sharing a video of herself alongside incumbent Assemblymember Diana Moreno (D-Astoria), Aber Kawas, David Orkin and Samantha Kattan, all fellow democratic socialists who won their respective primaries.

“Love you all. Solidarity forever.”

Those five candidates were all backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, and all but Orkin were formally backed by Mayor Mamdani. Mamdani won his own 11-candidate primary decisively last June,

and later took the mayoralty with 50.4 percent of the vote.

The rapid rise of Mamdani, a former Astoria assemblyman who polled at just 1 percent last February, set off a wave of momentum that DSA hopefuls are still riding. Kawas defeated a sitting Assembly member in the primary for an open state Senate seat, and Orkin bested an incumbent in the lower chamber.

It was a good night for democratic socialists in and beyond Queens.

Several of the borough’s incumbents also emerged victorious.

State comptroller Incumbent state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli defeated Democrats Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle, with about 59 percent of the vote.

Queens civil court county judge Attorneys Edmond Wong and Julie Milner led the Democratic race for the bench, coming in ahead of John Ciafone and Edward Irizarry at 31 and 27 percent, respectively.

Seventh Congressional District Valdez earned the Democratic nomination to replace Velázquez in Congress, beating out Reynoso, public defender Vichal Kumar and City Councilmember Julie Won (D-Long Island City) with 56 percent.

Paul Trust, speaking on behalf of the Richmond Hill Block Association and as a father of three daughters who attended the nearby schools, described the Jamaica Avenue commercial strip as a community trying to improve itself.

“This is a business district that is trying to lift itself up, and I feel like this is just an example of a card stacked against it,” Trust said.

He also said he had spoken to residents near another men’s shelter in the area and heard troubling accounts.

“They said there’s concerns about crime over there, there’s a lot of loitering, there’s catcalls to young girls,” Trust said, noting that Richmond Hill High School is nearby. “We already have safety concerns, and this just concerns me that it’s just going to make it that much worse.”

Rossella Muto, whose family has operated the nearby Alfie’s Pizza for more than 50 years, described a daily struggle with homeless individuals that she said has grown worse over the past decade. She said she tries to help, but acknowledged the limits of what one business can absorb.

“When it gets to a certain level where you have to protect the people in your store and yourself, then that’s a different story,” Muto said.

“I have friends of mine who live in Glendale, by a shelter. They don’t like it either, and they tell me they go through horror stories every single day. ... This cannot happen.

Not in this neighborhood.”

Carina Nieves-Snow, the parent coordinator at PS 51 — the school closest to the proposed shelter site — said families had already come to her with concerns about homeless people along Jamaica Avenue.

“We know that these shelters allow these individuals to roam the streets during the day,” NievesSnow said.

Faith leaders added their voices to the chorus. Rabbi Daniel Pollack said the community should have more input.

“A community should have a choice and a decision and input to make what’s best for the lives of their children, and for their parents, and for the school, and everyone who is connected with the community,” Pollack said. “It should not be thrust upon us.”

Helen Day, president of the Richmond Hill Historical Society, said, “They have come with this not as a proposal, but as a done deal, and they want to force us to

accept this as they have done in other communities. We don’t like that. We are going to protest it.”

Board leadership said the fight is not over.

“We’re going to have a public hearing in September,” CB 9 Chair Sherry Algredo said. “We are not going to give up.”

In a statement provided to the Chronicle after the rally, a spokesperson for the DSS said, “As we continue to transform the shelter system — closing substandard sites and opening new, high-quality facilities across the five boroughs — our focus lies squarely on improving the services we provide and ensuring that every community has the requisite safety net resources to support their neighbors in need.”

The agency said it remains committed to working with the community and prioritizing the safety of residents, staff and neighbors.

The DSS also pushed back against suggestions that people experiencing homelessness pose an inherent threat to the surrounding community, saying most shelter residents are individuals facing financial hardship, many of them working or seeking employment while trying to secure permanent Q housing.

Osina, Addabbo get the win in S. Queens Political staffer, longtime incumbent both secure Democratic nominations

Though the Democratic Socialists of America dominated races throughout the city on Tuesday, two Democrats with establishment backing sailed to victory in South Queens — Pesach Osina and state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. (D-Woodhaven).

Osina, a longtime political staffer, bested attorney Mike Scala in the Democratic primary for the open seat in Assembly District 23. He garnered 60.6 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the city Board of Elections, while Scala had 38.9 percent.

Scala did not im mediately respond to an emailed request for comment by deadline Wednesday.

Osina had the backing of the incumbent, Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach), many elected officials of the neighboring districts and the Queens Democratic Party.

“I am truly humbled by the trust and confidence the voters of the 23rd District have placed in our campaign,” Osina said in a statement. “From the very beginning, our campaign has been about building bridges and bringing communities together from every corner of the district around a shared commit-

ment to tackling rising costs, making our neighborhoods safer, and improving our quality of life.”

The race to the Assembly continues, as Osina will face Republican challenger Tom Sullivan in November’s general election.

Sullivan, a retired Army colonel, has run for the seat twice before, narrowly losing to incumbent Pheffer Amato both times. In 2022, he lost by just 15 votes.

“As we look ahead to November, I will continue meeting with my neighbors, listening to their concerns, discussing the issues that matter most, and working every day to earn their trust and support,” Osina said.

Meanwhile, Addabbo, the longtime incumbent in Senate District 15, handily beat Albert Baldeo, 73.6 percent to 25.8 percent, per the city BOE. Addabbo told the Chronicle that he’s celebrating his win by getting back to work.

“I’m so appreciative of the support,” Addabbo said. “We did really well last night, and I say ‘we’ because it’s not just me, it’s my team.

I can’t do it alone. But we feel really good. We feel energized. Our work is not done.”

“I never say never through anything, and so that part I’ll have to discuss with the people who supported me,” Baldeo said.

The incumbent senator, if reelected, will have new company in the Assembly. That could be Osina, Sullivan, David Orkin — who beat incumbent state Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar (D-Woodhaven) — whose district

overlaps Addabbo’s, or Orkin’s Republican challenger in November, Ruben Cruz.

Addabbo said he’s ready to collaborate with whomever his new colleagues may be.

“As long as the focus is on the best interests of the people that we represent, I try to work with everybody,” Addabbo said. “It doesn’t matter what party, doesn’t matter your background. ... If we don’t get along as colleagues, Q the people suffer.”

Democratic socialist David Orkin bested incumbent Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar (D-Woodhaven) in the District 38 primary.

Orkin, a former immigrant workers’ rights attorney, came out on top with 59 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the city Board of Elections. His platform emphasized affordability, protection from immigration enforcement and stronger labor protections.

“I’m incredibly proud — of the hundreds of volunteers on this campaign who showed up and put the work in, to have led with a message that resonated with parts of Queens that have felt left behind for decades, and to be a part of the largest movement in this country fighting for working class people,” Orkin said in a statement.

He termed his victory a “historic win for the left and for the working people of South Queens,” driven by the Democratic Socialists of America, of which he is a member, and Desis Rising Up & Moving — DRUM — Beats.

Rajkumar was first elected to the Assembly in 2020. She said in a statement that it has

been the honor of her life to serve the district.

“Through every battle and every challenge, I remain committed to the same purpose that first called me to public service: lifting people up and fighting for a better New York,” Rajkumar said. “I am deeply proud of the record we built together: nonstop service for our neighborhoods, historic victories in Albany, resources delivered to our communities, and a government that showed up for people.”

She congratulated Orkin on his win, saying she is there to help with the transition so residents “continue to be served with the care, urgency, and dedication they deserve.”

Orkin in April had filed a lawsuit accusing the incumbent’s campaign of forging petition signatures to get her on the primary ballot. Queens State Supreme Court Judge Denise Johnson ultimately tossed the case, and the decision was upheld on appeal.

Rajkumar also had accused the DSA of waging a campaign of hate against her.

Orkin was among multiple DSA candidates who emerged victorious in consequential races.

Among the others was Assemblywoman Claire Valdez (D-Sunnyside) in the primary for New York’s Seventh Congressional District.

Assembly District 30 The Democratic contest between Patrick Martinez, Somnath Ghimire and Shamsul Haque for Raga’s seat was too close to call by press time Wednesday. But Martinez had the narrowest of leads, with 44 percent and just 13 more votes than Haque.

Assembly District 23 Democrat Pesach Osina bested Mike Scala for the nod to replace Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach), with about 61 percent of the vote.

Assembly District 32 Nathaniel Hezekiah III, deputy chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Greg Meeks (D-Jamaica), won the crowded Democratic primary race to replace Assemblymember Vivian Cook (D-Jamaica) with 52 percent of the vote. He defeated Mohammed Molla, Latoya LeGrand, Tunisia Morrison and Queen Johnson.

Man hits boy Police are looking for this man, who they say assaulted a child at a Forest Hills playground on June 15.

ueens’ most elegant export surely is the Steinway piano. The handcrafted, six-figure instruments, renowned the world over, take 200 workers 11 months to make, using 10,000 parts, and the Astoria factory that crafts them produces only four a day.

Yet Queens manufactures much more than the world’s best pianos. The borough’s long history of producing all manner of goods, from clothes to food to TV shows, is the subject of our 29th annual Celebration of Queens special edition, “Made in Queens.” The supplement is in all print editions of this week’s Chronicle, and online at qchron.com.

The story of Steinway, founded by German immigrant Heinrich Steinweg, who anglicized his name to Henry Steinway, leads off “Made in Queens” in style. Reading it you’ll learn, as we did, how the company provides a great career for immigrants seeking to learn a craft, and much more. Did you know the Steinway family’s real estate holdings were once so vast they owned what is now LaGuardia Airport?

In the next article, we take a look at another kind of production: the maker trend. Maker spaces across Queens are giving people the chance to create all kinds of things themselves, from woodworking and sewing projects to digital

creations. Their locations and clientele vary — some are just for students — but all give the individual the space and the tools to be creative and make things no one else has.

After the maker spaces we scale things up, big-time, and also go back in time. While Queens does retain some manufacturing operations, factories used to be much more dominant across the landscape, especially but not only in the Long Island City area. The Ideal Toy Co. was over in Hollis, and produced products for kids of several generations. A red-brick building in Glendale housed Walter J. Vogt and Co., which made certain textile products. Today it’s an office building, one we’re especially interested in because among its tenants is the Queens Chronicle. Tidbits about many other factories are included in the article.

After that comes production of yet another kind — film and television. You’ll learn some of the history of Kaufman Astoria Studios, directly from the company’s president, and plenty also about the much newer Silvercup Studios. The latter was of course named for the old bread baking operation whose location it took over in 1983.

tion in 1943, from a children’s creative space to construction sites and chocolate making.

Then it’s more chocolate! You need no golden ticket and will meet no Willy Wonka, but you will get acquainted with the folks who run two Queens chocolatiers: the venerable Aigner in Forest Hills and the newer Ridgewood Chocolate, where they sort, roast and shell their own beans. Talk about handmade! This is the sweetest story in the supplement.

Next comes a piece on big-name fashion accessories that got their start in Queens, specifically, Carlos Falchi handbags and Steve Madden shoes. Both companies made their popular products here and made their impact on the industry, and both continue to evolve along with the trends.

All these people designing and manufacturing and producing in Queens need somewhere to live — so the last story in the supplement is about the developers, builders and architects who constructed so much of the borough we call home, and continue to add new housing to this day.

We learned a lot in researching “Made in Queens.”

Though there’s more to be told about manufacturing’s history here, we hope you will find reading it to be as informative and enjoyable as we found putting it together to be.

Pass Alzheimer’s bill ASAP Dear Editor: The annual AIM Advocacy Forum marked a significant step forward in advancing the Alzheimer’s Association’s top federal legisla-

tive priority: the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention Act. In early June, I proudly joined 1,000 grassroots advocates in Washington, DC, to meet with members of Congress and make the case for this crucial legislation.

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016. In hindsight, her symptoms started years earlier. If the blood biomarker test were available in the 2010s, we would have caught the disease much earlier, and had more time to prepare by making appropriate lifestyle changes. It’s possible she could still be alive today.

Fewer than 10 percent of people living with mild cognitive impairment ever receive a diagnosis, which means most cannot access FDA-approved disease modifying treatments when they are most effective — early on in the disease process. New blood tests can detect Alzheimer’s biomarkers earlier and more simply than ever before, but under cur-

Philadelphia has just banned horse-carriage businesses, and there is no defensible reason why New York City should continue allowing them. And enough with the idea of a two-year transition period or an extended job-transition program. There is no justification for a prolonged phase-out of an industry that is already unsafe, antiquated, and unethical.

Gov. prioritizes prostitutes

We ain’t got nobody Dear Editor: A June 18 letter writer from Howard Beach makes good points about how “Seniors need home tax fix.” But that would just give breaks to some while ignoring the basic problem of how elites manage to finagle low taxes for some while dividing everybody else whenever their franchise is threatened. The local politicians the writer mentions, like Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. (D-Woodhaven) and Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach), are pros at that playbook as shown by how they came up with the Alternative Veterans Exemption. Just no overall reform that would benefit everybody. Everybody but the elites.

The system is run on division. Breaks also go with alacrity to Mitchell-Lama deadbeats and affluent parts of Southeast Queens. Resulting rates are not as low as Park Slope, mind you (not nearly), but lower than places like Howard Beach, which is enough to placate the threat of any class-based action.

Definitely forget our “socialist” mayor, Zohran Mamdani. As in the Louis Prima song, “Just a Gigolo,” he’s increasingly “Just a Liberal.” Everybody knows the part he’s playing.

The last Queens politician of any note to give some cheer to the likes of Howard Beachcombers was, surprisingly enough, Borough President Donovan Richards, who told the Chronicle back in July 2025, “I’m with him [Mamdani] on property taxes as one of the people who sued the city ... If he says he is going to correct Park Slope’s property taxes, while Southeast Queens residents [in a $700,000 home] are paying more than somebody ... in a $1 million or $2 million or $3 million brownstone walk-up ... paying less taxes than us, that is music to my ears.” Has anyone seen or heard much from the borough president since? Maybe do a wellness check.

Dear Editor: Gov. Hochul has found a new way to benefit the world’s oldest profession. She quietly launched a program, not approved by New York State’s Legislature, to spend $2.5 million on healthcare services for sex workers in NYC and her hometown of Buffalo, reports the New York Post (“Kat turns hooker healthcare trick,” June 21). Under this program, administered by the state’s Health Department, sex workers receive “primary sexual, behavioral and dental care,” notes the Post. The program began in 2023 and extends to 2028.

Critics accuse Hochul of prioritizing prostitutes over emergency responders. “Instead of playing pimp, Kathy Hochul should consider making sure the heroes who answer 911 calls and save lives every day can afford their rent and groceries, “ said state Assemblyman Michael Novakhov (R-Brooklyn). State Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo (R-Staten Island), says Hochul is catering to the Democratic Socialists of America, who want to decriminalize prostitution, in her bid for re-election this fall.

By furtively spending taxpayers’ money on hookers who turn tricks, Gov. Hochul has prostituted our state’s healthcare system. Voters must turn her out of office in November.

Aqueduct: fond memories Dear Editor: I really enjoyed reading the Chronicle’s June 18 featured story on Aqueduct, “After 132 years, the Big A takes a final lap.” As a child, I practically grew up at Aqueduct (and Belmont).

My family, who are all gone now, enjoyed going to the racetrack on weekends, and I have very fond memories of spending time with all of them there as a child. Although I haven’t been to the track in decades, it’s sad for me to see it closing down.

It was nice how Editor Kristen Guglielmo listed a few of the different events that took place at Aqueduct over the years. I especially remember how big a deal it was when Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there.

Aqueduct hosted many great concerts in the 1970s as well, and I’m a little disappointed that those concerts weren’t mentioned in the story.

It’s not really that big of a deal, but it would’ve been a nice addition if the concerts by Little Richard, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Orleans and Flo & Eddie were mentioned.

Well, you can’t have it all, right? Thank you for the story.

Community members, area artists and elected officials gathered on June 18 to celebrate the unveiling of “Wings of Rich-Haven,” a new mural transforming an underpass connecting Richmond Hill and Woodhaven, at 91st Avenue between 98th and 102nd streets, into a vibrant public art installation.

The work was spearheaded by the Woodhaven Mural Project, a community-driven initiative aimed at transforming public spaces throughout the area.

The mural, developed through engagement sessions with residents, schools and civic organizations, features bold colors and community-inspired imagery to encourage pedestrian activity and neighborhood pride.

The unveiling celebration featured remarks from community leaders and an announcement of $20,000 secured in the

state budget to further the community murals. Among the those in attendance were state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr., Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar and Councilmember Joann Ariola’s chief of staff, Phyllis Inserillo.

“Being on the wall for a few months, at regular times, allows me to encourage interactions with the neighborhood community ‘flying’ beneath the underpasses, hearing, seeing and feeling the real everyday grind for the individual Queens on foot, and even capturing a honk or shoutout from those ‘flying’ on wheels,” said Jennifer Lambert, lead artist and co-founder of the Woodhaven Mural Project. “Underpasses are active and vital passageways in the city, linking neighborhoods and should be reinvented as desired destinations.” — Kristen Guglielmo

Nonprofit grants up for grabs Twenty-five community-oriented nonprofits will receive donations of $10,000 each from Resorts World, part of its Day of Giving event in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

Fifteen of the awards will be given through Resorts World New York City, and the rest through its Catskills and Hudson Valley locations.

Eligible NYC organizations must be active IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits in good standing.

The application deadline is June 29, and winners will be picked July 7.

Two garage fires in a single afternoon

The FDNY was busy in South Queens on June 17, as firefighters battled two separate garage blazes just hours apart.

The first was a two-alarm fire that occurred at a residence on 75th Street in Ozone Park, between 95th and 97th avenues, at around 11:18 a.m.

FDNY officials told the Chronicle that 46 units with 141 fire and EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene to find a garage fire with an extension to a private dwelling. The fire was under control by 12:18 p.m., and its cause and origin is under investigation.

Three civilians and two firefighters sustained minor injuries, officials said. All but one civilian, who refused medical attention at the scene, were transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Less than three miles to the east, at 4:37 p.m., another garage fire broke out, that one at a home on 95th Avenue, between 123rd and 121st streets, in Richmond Hill.

The blaze extended into the first floor of a two-story private dwelling, FDNY officials said, with 21 units consisting of

OSHA investigating airport complaints

The U.S. Department of Labor has confirmed it is investigating a number of health and safety complaints lodged by ground personnel at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports.

Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, which represents 600 ground employees at the airports, said in a Tuesday press release that complaints were made to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration against Alliance Ground International.

Allegations in the complaints include unsafe vehicles, heat-related illness, unsafe working conditions, shared and uncleaned protective gear, malfunctioning safety warning devices, insufficient training and more.

AGI officials did not respond to messages seeking comment prior to the Chronicle’s deadline on Wednesday afternoon.

“For more than a year, essential airport workers at JFK and LGA have been raising the alarm about dangerous working conditions under AGI,” said Manny Past-

A Hunter College student report outlines development opportunities along the IBX. Among them was to build housing over the retail space at Myrtle Avenue and 65th Street, where there is now a Stop & Shop. The report’s summary says it was generated at the city’s request. But officials say that is not the case, and it was purely an academic exercise.

“We’re looking forward to future conversations to make sure that whatever the city wants to put forward is something that the community is OK with and the community wants,” Heredia said.

CB 5 District Manager Gary Giordano believes the report suggests too much potential development for the area.

Rinaldi nabbed for AI posts: sources, police

Jonathan Rinaldi, who unsuccessfully challenged state Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi (D-Forest Hills) in the June 23 primary, was arrested Wednesday morning for a slew of fabricated posts on social media, sources say.

The source who told the Chronicle about the arrest said Rinaldi is facing multiple counts for AI-generated posts on his social media pages while campaigning. Per the

NYPD, he was charged with forgery and possession of a forged instrument. The Queens District Attorney’s Office said he was set to be a r raig ned yesterd ay afternoon.

This story was first reported by the Queens Daily Eagle.

Earlier this year, Rinaldi posted an AI video that appeared to depict his opponent making disparaging statements about himself. He said at the time that the video was “political commentary.”

It was hardly the first bogus post on his pages. Last year, when he challenged City Councilmember Lynn Schulman (D-Forest Hills), his accounts posted falsified news stories reporting on nonexistent endorsements. One story claimed to be by the Chronicle, and the bylines in some fabricated images referenced real people.

R inaldi, who could not be reached Wednesday, claimed he had been hacked, but later said the posts pale “in comparison to the

power of the establishment.”

Earlier this year, Hevesi accused Rinaldi of changing his voter registration without his knowledge, wh ich wou ld have made t he incumbent ineligible for Tuesday’s primary. Rinaldi, who switched over to the Democratic line to prima r y Hevesi, has den ied involvement.

The DA’s Office did not provide updates on that case, and it was not immediately clear whether his Q arrest was connected to it.

Holy Cross HS rallies for teacher in need Community at the school in Flushing encourages donors for liver transplant

There is school spirit.

And then there is the case of Blaine Palmer, a French teacher at Holy Cross High School in Flushing.

Last year, during a routine medical checkup, doctors found colon cancer that had spread to his liver. And ever since it became clear that he needs a liver transplant, the school’s administration, staff and students have been on a full court press to convince potential live donors to get tested through NYU Langone Health in Manhattan.

Palmer has been at the school for 13 years.

“I’m just really lucky to have been a part of the Holy Cross community,” Palmer told the Chronicle last week. “It’s given me great appreciation for this place.”

Palmer, 50, is married. He underwent surgery to remove the colon cancer after being diagnosed last July.

“That all went well,” Palmer said. “Since then I’m on chemo every two weeks. I’m full of that chemo, but I’m tolerating it well, all things considered. It has its side effects, but I’m able to work. And with the support I’ve been getting, I think that I’m doing well, all things considered.”

“But my surgeon told me that doesn’t mean what it used to. You hear ‘stage 4’ and its very frightening. But with technology and developments these days, it doesn’t have to be a death sentence.”

Doctors have said his best chance is for a

compatible living donor to be found. A section of the healthy liver is transplanted to the patient. The donor’s related medical costs are covered.

When none of Palmer’s family members proved to be a compatible match, the Holy Cross community went into high gear.

Not that Mark Mongelluzzo, the school’s president, was surprised.

“We’re a place that emphasizes two things,” Mongelluzzo said. “One is a sense of family. The other is hope.”

The school has been reaching out to the media and posting links to information about Langone’s donor procedures at tinyurl.com/ bdfvdxmk.

Every one of its social media sites has been encouraging people to sign up to be tested.

One posting included Palmer’s students making their requests in English and French.

Palmer still expresses amazement at the level of support.

“It’s hard for me to make a pitch, difficult for me to ask,” he admitted. “What Langone has told me to keep in mind is you’re not asking, ‘Hey, can you consider giving me part of your liver?’”

A potential donor who might not be able to help Palmer could prove to be a match for someone else, and vice versa.

Feds, NYPD raid police officials’ homes Action reportedly concerns former Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, an Eric Adams ally

This article was originally published on June 24, 11:12 a.m. EDT by THE CITY REPORTER. Members of the NYPD and the FBI searched several homes as part of a criminal investigation into current and former members of the NYPD, according to Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

The joint investigation by the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is reportedly looking into bribery allegations that involve Jeffrey Maddrey, the former NYPD chief of department under Mayor Eric Adams, The New York Times reported.

ABC7 reported members of the NYPD and federal agents were seen outside Maddrey’s Queens home Wednesday morning.

The Times, the Associated Press and other outlets reported that the homes of former Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard and James McCarthy, the current commanding officer of Manhattan South, were also targeted in the raids.

A spokesperson for the NYPD declined a request for additional comment on the raids and pointed to the commissioner’s remarks on social media. A spokesperson for the

Southern District of New York didn’t return a request for comment right away.

Maddrey’s attorney also did not answer a request for comment right away.

Asked about the raids at an unrelated press conference Wednesday morning, Mayor Mamdani said Tisch “has already shown a real commitment to cracking down on corruption and ensuring that the public servants in the NYPD are held to the highest standards.”

“I’m confident that she will lead us through this process,” he said.

The raids came the same day as the arrest of Frank Carone, another close ally to former Mayor Adams who served as his chief of staff before leaving to start a lobbying firm. That probe — which comes out of a separate U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York’s Eastern District — are not thought to be related.

Federal agents had previously raided Maddrey’s home in January of 2025, and Tisch, who at the time had been appointed

by Adams, announced Maddrey’s suspension without pay. At the time of the raid, he had already announced his resignation, following allegations from a subordinate that he coerced her into sexual favors in exchange for overtime pay.

by Mark Lord hile the Queens Botanical Garden, a 39-acre urban oasis on Main Street in the heart of Flushing, remains a popular destination for lovers of horticulture, it is by no means the only local spot where one can see landscapes of unusual creativity and beauty, as evidenced by a new photography book and companion exhibition.

In his book “All the Queens Gardens,” architect, artist and Jackson Heights resident Rafael HerrinFerri spotlights approximately 100 of the borough’s most alluring yards and gardens, some ostentatiously over-the-top, some created around simple plastic liner pots.

And now, the Voelker Orth Museum, a converted 1890s house located at 149-19 38 Ave. that invites reflection on life in Flushing then and now, presents, through Sept. 27, an exhibition featuring a selection

of around two dozen enlarged images from HerrinFerri’s book.

The museum provides the ideal setting for the photographs, each personally selected by the lensman, and generously displays them throughout mul-

“This is probably the first time we’ve worked with an architect who has a totally different approach to an exhibit,” Silverfine said. “I am so excited to see how he understood our space and married the exhibition to the house.”

According to Herrin-Ferri, “It was an interesting process. I wanted the photographs to relate to each space in the house. The house is an exhibit, so this is an exhibit in an exhibit.”

Deciding where each of the chosen photographs would be displayed took a great deal of consideration.

“It was based on the room, the spirit, the décor,” Herrin-Ferri said, adding that the photos were picked “to contrast or relate” to each room. continued on page 21

Georgian Court holds the distinction of being the first apartment building built on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills. Designed

by Manhattan architect Louis I. Brooks of 63 Madison Ave., it was the only apartment building built in Forest Hills during the Great Depression, opening for occupancy on Oct. 1, 1930. It was an innovator for many other reasons, too.

All apartments were built with three or four rooms and were convertible to six- or seven-room units. The building had two Otis elevators, individual incinerators for each unit, refrigerators and gas ranges. There were no dumbwaiters. It was Forest Hills’ first apartment building with colored tile to match the fixtures in both the bathroom and kitchen, a welcome change from the stark black and white of the 1920s. References were required for tenants to rent a threeroom apartment for $100 or four rooms for $140, expensive at the time.

Georgian Court’s most attractive selling point was that it was situated next to beautiful tennis courts. However, that was short

It was announced on Dec. 3, 1936 that a new church and rectory were to be built there for Our Lady Queen of Martyrs for $365,000. Steam shovels broke ground in May 1938, residents lost their view and they endured the noise for the next year.

Today Georgian Court sits modestly on the boulevard, obscured by other structures towering over it. Compared to people in some newer complexes in the city, residents are still happy with its solid construction Q and love their 96-year-old building.

A thorny question that arose as soon as the Knicks won the NBA title against the San Antonio Spurs was “Will the Knicks visit the White House?” In the pre-social media era, this was de rigueur. These days, when politics dominates so much of life, that decision is fraught with peril.

The recent maelstrom between New York Giants players Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter over Dart’s appearance with President Trump in Rockland County served as a reminder.

Trump is not popular with most NBA players; they appreciate his tax policies but are not happy with his efforts to eradicate the Voting Rights Act and implement gerrymandering that hurts minority representation. No NBA team has visited the White House during his first or second term.

On the pro-visit side, players may not want to upset team owner James Dolan, a longtime friend of the president. Proponents of a Knicks trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. will point to the fact that no one objected to the team attending a ceremony at City Hall hosted by Mayor Mamdani, a proud Democratic Socialist. Therefore, no one should object to a White House ceremony hosted by a Republican commander-in-chief.

The NBA Finals served as a reunion for Knicks alumni. Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Larry Johnson and Stephon Marbury were featured prominently during the ABC/ESPN tele-

casts of Games 3 and 4. Knicks great Carmelo Anthony showed up for Thursday’s parade and was at the Garden for the NBA Finals. He was not on camera the way the other ex-Knicks were.

There may have been a reason for Anthony’s low-key presence. He is an NBA studio analyst for NBC/Peacock. I am sure both he and the network did not want him to be accused of being a Knicks “homer’ in upcoming seasons, since the team certainly will be getting many nationally televised games in the near future.

Mike Breen is the longtime Knicks TV voice on the MSG Network, and serves as ABC/ ESPN’s lead voice on NBA telecasts, including the just-concluded NBA Finals. It is a tribute to his professionalism that even those who rooted against the Knicks could not accuse him of bias in his play-by-play calls.

Breen must have been aware of the “homer” criticism leveled by some baseball fans at Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis when he calls a national game on Fox in which the Dodgers participate.

A prominent storyline of the Knicks squad is that Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges were teammates at Villanova. With the advent of the college transfer portal, backed with name, image and likeness money for college athletes, it is unlikely we will ever see anything like that Q again in the NBA. De Palma will keep you in suspense at MoMI

The Museum of the Moving Image would like to offer you some chills through the end of August with a selection of films by acclaimed director Brian De Palma.

“De Palma: Summer of Suspense” kicked off on June 12, and will offer 10 of De Palma’s best from 1970 to 1998 in 13 showings on select Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 29.

Michael Koresky, senior curator of film at MoMI, is an admitted De Palma fan — he wrote an essay on the director and his films for the Criterion Collection’s offering of the erotic thriller “Dressed to Kill” (1980).

“I think De Palma sort of took the [Alfred] Hitchcock template and was sort of experimenting with it,” he said of De Palma’s early ventures into thrillers. “He came out of an experimental, avant garde background, making experimental films, political films and political satire.” He said De Palma’s 1973 work “Sisters” was his first foray into the suspense genre.

“It was an exercise of how you could take the basic Hitchcock elements and amp them up ...” Koresky said. “And ‘Sisters’ proved that he knew exactly what he was doing in how to create a suspense film.”

But it was “Carrie,” his 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, that finally kicked open all doors.

“He had been making movies for a while,” Koresky said. “But ‘Carrie’ was a hit. That was what smashed through and got him into the mainstream.”

Koresky’s own favorite is “Blow Out” (1981) in which John Travolta plays a movie sound technician who inadvertently stumbles across dangerous political intrigue.

“And without giving away spoilers, it’s a great Fourth of July movie,” Koresky said of MoMI’s offering at 6:30 p.m. on July 3 and 3:30 p.m. on July 5.

“Scarface” (1983), with Pacino again

playing a gangster, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on July 10, followed by “Dressed to Kill” with Michael Caine and Angie Dickinson at 6 p.m. on July 11.

“Raising Cain” (1992), the psychological thriller with John Lithgow and Lilita Davidovich, screens on July 12 at 3:30 p.m.

The cult musical “Phantom of the Paradise” (1974) screens at 7 p.m. on July 17 and 3:30 p.m. on July 26. July 18 offers the detective thriller “Snake Eyes” (1998), centering around an Atlantic City casino, with Nicholas Cage, Gary Sinese and Carla Gugino at 3:30 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by “Sisters,” starring Margot Kidder in a dual role of twins in a movie that channels Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and “Vertigo.”

“Hi, Mom”(1970), a black comedy starring Robert De Niro, plays at 7 p.m. on July 24. “Obsession” (1976) with Cliff Robertson starts at 3 p.m. July 25. “Carrie“ shows later that evening at 6 p.m. The 1987 classic “The Untouchables” starring Kevin Costner and Sean Connery will show in 70mm at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and 4 p.m. Aug. 29.

His latest book, through its photographs and text, explores the personal and cultural stories behind the landscapes, reflecting the cultural diversity of the borough.

“The American Imaginary” refuses to settle this quandary at the Queens Museum. Instead, the question cycles through resistance, uneasily at first, before crystallizing tenderly via generationally drifting media. Christina Chan, Annette Parkins and Carlos David Trujillo, each with deep ties to Queens, shaped the exhibition not as any final verdict but rather an outwardly building dialogue. Built from three different curatorial viewpoints, the exhibit gathers photographs from the museum’s collection from the 1800s through 1979.

“Through varied subject matter and across time, the images speak to family lore and nostalgia, contradiction, visibility, migration, fame, intimacy, conflict, and roots,” the museum says on its website.

Much of what appears takes the form of albumen prints and gelatin silver photos.

America is seen through the prism of industrial force in a picture of a huge deck girder departing U.S. Steel’s Gary, Ind., facility. As it traverses a barren landscape, the enormous structure dwarfs its surroundings. While evoking a period when manufacturing was vital to the American selfimage, the photo challenges viewers to consider the people, communities and economic structures that made such undertakings possible.

Arthur Rothstein’s photograph of a pregnant woman standing beside a child in a rough wooden entrance is among the most moving pieces in the collection. A subtle tension between perseverance and uncertainty is created as the girl looks down and the woman’s gaze goes outside the frame. Rothstein’s picture, one of a series of the family from the Great Depression, shows how survival, dignity and a sense of community are still essential to the American narrative.

In Lewis Hines’ “Cotton Pickers,” the lines between work and home life blur into a single picture, depicting a family at the brink of intimacy and labor. The tenderness of family closeness is visceral, and so is the oppression of child labor and sharecropping. A clean linear storyline of Americanness fails to materialize, which in a sense proves a point.

Robert Levine, honorably discharged from the service, quickly married Miriam Abramowitz on Aug. 23, 1945. They knew each other growing up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn and made their home there, at 2136 East 19 St., Apt 2. They had a daughter, Joan, in March 1947. Robert operated fabric machines for a manufacturer.

In 1952 they moved to 69-35A 186 Lane in Fresh Meadows. Son Charles was born on Oct. 18, 1952. The family next took advantage of the Servicemen Readjustment Act of 1944, the GI Bill, to buy a home, moving to 28 Phipps Lane in Plainview, LI, in 1957.

Robert made a career change and opened up a luncheonette and stationery store. He and Charles worked long, hard hours.

After graduating high school, Charles went to the State University New York at Potsdam. He later said he “majored in rock ’n’ roll and pot and minored in LSD.” He left after two years to tour the country as a guitarist and songwriter.

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and there’s never been a better time to get outside and admire all that the natural world has to offer.

With more than 12,600 acres of natural space, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge has plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Among the upcoming programs there this summer are introductory birdwatching events, for those curious to give the everpopular hobby a try, and “Ranger’s Choice” guided walks, where you never know what you might learn.

“The rangers, it is their choice,” said Daphne Yun, public affairs officer for Gateway National Recreation Area, which encompasses the refuge. “Some talk about the natural wonders of Jamaica Bay, some talk a little bit more about the history of Jamaica Bay, the wildlife refuge, but all are enjoyable.”

The Ranger’s Choice walks have recurred for the past several years, Yun said, and they give staff the chance to highlight topics they’re especially passionate about. The next planned installments are Sunday, June 21 and June 28, both at 10:30 a.m.

The program runs again Saturday, June 27, at the same time.

Both the Birding for Beginners and Ranger’s Choice events are free and kid-friendly, and no RSVP is required. They may be canceled for extreme heat or thunderstorms.

Both programs are set to return in July.

The refuge is managed by the National Park Service as part of Gateway, which is home to more than 325 species of birds. Per the NPS website, the wildlife refuge is a great spot to watch seasonal bird migration and spot resident species.

“A lot of New Yorkers don’t realize what a great resource we have, that there are so many birds in this area,” Yun said. Binoculars will be available at the Birding for

Beginners event, and sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.

At this time of year, Yun continued, different types of ducks and gulls can be spotted at the refuge. Birders also may encounter egrets, tree swallows, warblers and more.

Ospreys are relatively uncommon, Yun said, but they’re around, and they usually nest in the same place with the same mate every year.

“If people don’t know a duck from a seagull, this is a way that they can find out,” she said, later adding that she was never much of a birder, but she learned much more about avians during her 13 years at Gateway.

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s trails and parking lot are open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Its visitor center operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday to Monday. One may call (718) 318-4340 to learn more.

“If you’ve not visited the wildlife refuge, it’s mindblowing to realize that you were still in New York City when you were there,” Yun said.

The exhibition makes clear that these calls are not neutral; they come plaited with power, history and the habits of perspective. No definitive answer of national identity arrives, and that refusal is the show’s strength. It makes room for uncertainty, for second thoughts, for noticing one’s own assumptions at work.
