Change and choice are good - but that presumes those changes are introduced with the knowledge that they will actually fulfil the requirements of being more environmentally-friendly. This is where cleaning companies and facilities managers can both make a difference.

By helping to bring together their customers who want to make changes with the industry experts who can advise on the best way forward, they can help avoid potentially expensive mistakes. To explain what I mean, take a look at these two examples.

Recently, one worldwide drinks manufacturer announced it had seen a big rise in the distribution of glass bottles rather than plastic ones. You might think this would be a cause for celebration, but instead the manufacturer warned that because glass is heavier, it has a much larger carbon footprint due to transport. And, by the way, its plastic bottles (and cans) were all recyclable anyway.

Secondly, we know of one organisation which wanted to introduce single-use compostable food packaging, the idea being that this could be safely disposed of, along with any food remains, at an anaerobic digestion facility. Unfortunately, the closest anaerobic digestion plant that could handle this type of packaging turned out to be much further away than they had thought - meaning the food waste now had to travel a greater distance, thereby adding to the carbon footprint.

You can see how challenging this can be for companies wanting to make the right decision. By talking to experts like ourselves, who will undertake a detailed waste audit to examine both the types of waste and the potential options available, we can all make a difference.

Recently, with our help, one of our customers, a five-star hotel complex with restaurants, an award-winning spa, championship golf course, and a host of luxury meeting and event spaces, made a number of changes.

such as installing more recycling bins, installing a new metal skip, and expanding the size of the cardboard storage area to help them increase their recycling rebate. Other changes were more wide-ranging and came about as a result of raising the profile of environmental issues. For example, replacing plastic water bottles with glass bottles in the hotel’s luxury rooms and suites, and introducing a recycling programme for guest toiletries. Our fleet of certified CarbonNeutral collection vehicles means extra collections do not add to a customer’s carbon footprint We took the approach that by engaging with key stakeholders, such as the catering team, the facilities team and, more generally with all employees by holding a Waste Awareness Day, we could overall make a much bigger impression.

A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG

I suspect I’m not the only person expressing concern right now about the growing recruitment challenge in cleaning. Yes, it’s always been harder with cleaning than in most industries, for reasons we all know well. But to these has now been added the complication of Brexit and I’m already hearing stories about EU staff returning home, either because of uncertainty, or because the weakness of sterling is making their pay packet worth less back home than previously.

And that’s just the start. The reality, under evolving government proposals for points or salarybased immigration control, is that with or without a deal, in 21 months’ time the inflow of EU staff looking for lower paid work in the UK will come to an end. Unless different rules apply to immigration from other countries, we will then be left with indigenous supply as our only source of labour for cleaning contracts. That frightens me, as British attitudes to working in our industry have changed in the last few years and I don’t hear many solutions being offered about how we address this. The whole thing is like a ticking time bomb that we’re too afraid to even think about.

So what do we do? Well, I see there being two linked solutions.

The first is an internal and external public relations challenge, the second about training. The link is that they both come down to the same fundamental issue, the use of the term ‘low-skilled’. This month I’m just focusing on PR and how that relates to front line staff, the toughest recruitment challenge.

Perceptions are difficult things to deal with. The fact is there are millions of ‘low-skilled’ jobs in the UK carried out at anti-social times of day, many in cleaning, but far more in call centres, retail, hospitality and so on. The difference with cleaning is it’s perceived as a dirty

job that’s therefore beneath people and it’s this perception we need to address. The PR task is around getting both client organisations and ourselves, the contractors, to value the work cleaners do, in fact to make a conspicuous point of valuing it. No-one questions the critical importance of cleaning in healthcare, food production, data rooms, sterile ‘clean’ rooms, special needs schools, areas affected by norovirus, and so on.

But as an industry, do we do enough to highlight the value of our work in creating a gleaming environment and reducing the spread of infection across the more commonly cleaned environments hot desking offices, public venues, or the UK’s 32,000 schools? The fact is, it’s easy not to notice good cleaning or understand how it is achieved, but once the role is more valued, it should by rights be easier to justify the cost of providing it, as a result of which pay rates can rise in tandem. A steep hill to climb, I know.

Of course, it’s one thing to emphasise the value of cleaning through our own staff recruitment and induction procedures, but it’s another to convince clients of our cleaners’ importance and maybe this is where our industry bodies could help. How? Well I heard a gratifying example last month of how a major bank in the city insists that the outsourced cleaning staff wear the same uniforms as its own FM team, that they have access to the same welfare facilities - canteen, gym, etc - and attend the same FM briefings. The word to describe this is ‘inclusiveness’, and through a subtle process of case studies and media projection, it’s this type of attitude that we should be exploring more with the client FM community.

THE CLEANING SHOW 2019 The Cleaning Show, one of Europe’s largest trade events dedicated to commercial cleaning, is here and as the Official Media Partner of the event, C&M offers an overview of what’s going on. The Cleaning Show, which takes place at London’s Excel from 19-21 March 2019, is one of Europe’s biggest trade events dedicated to commercial cleaning. And this year it features a raft of both new and returning exhibitors.

She has worked with a wide range of industries to develop workforces, mainly through the development of skill standards and qualifications. Following senior leadership roles with ILM and City & Guilds, Sally has worked on projects for a range of organisations, including BICSc, since 2015.

This presentation will compare the hygiene of different hand-drying systems, including electric dryers and towels. Using data and video, details will be presented of scientific studies which show that the choice of hand-drying system affects the number and spread of microbes on the hands and the contamination of users and the washroom environment. Included will be the latest multi-site study carried out in hospitals in France, Italy and the UK. Biography: Keith Redway is emeritus fellow in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Westminster. He has carried out consultancy work for UK and European companies and published scientific studies on the hygiene of different hand drying methods. He has been a member of ETS’s Scientific Expert Panel since 2013.

In his role as Grundon’s group development and innovation manager, Owen George has the dual task of reviewing ways in which existing processes can be improved to add more value for customers while at the same time investigating new technologies to help meet the challenges of the circular economy. This need for creativity is also relevant when providing clean environments which promote wellbeing. Waste Match explores whether furniture can be re-used or restored and sold on, or donated to charity. It’s possible to reduce waste to landfill for some clients by as much as 100% and businesses need the comfort of knowing they are not wasting resources or risking their corporate reputation by acting in a non-sustainable way.

This session will use real world waste examples to look at how businesses can be more creative with their waste solutions to benefit both themselves and society.

Biography: Simon Moseley is a consultant focusing on Mitie’s Waste match operations. He was managing director responsible for Goldman Sachs’ Asia Pacific real estate portfolio and support services from 1999-2016, encompassing 50 facilities totaling two million square feet - from client offices to data centres. This was a period of significant growth and new businesses with varying standards of infrastructure and service, eg in China and India, were expected to be consistent with global financial centres such as London, New York or Tokyo. Simon served in the British Army before he joined Goldman Sachs.

Dr Kemp consults for BICSc, governments, private organisations, and companies. He is regarded as a global expert in his specialist area of work, undertaking research at the University of Lincoln and the University of Baltimore.

Following the rebranding of Capital Shopping Centres in 2013, intu Retail Services was formed as the in-house facilities provider for intu, and Mark was appointed as head of environmental services in April 2016. He has overall responsibility for the service delivery of cleaning, landscaping and waste management at 14 of intu’s UK shopping centres.

Michael Foreman, managing director, Don’t Waste UK. Michael Foreman has wide experience as an owner, managing director, senior strategic consultant and sales and marketing director. In his career spanning 25 years, most of his roles have focused around strategy and business development. He has sat on numerous advisory boards including Tourism Montreal and acted as a Liverpool Ambassador. As late as the ‘noughties’ office clearance was a burgeoning business where commercial considerations were king and old furniture was discarded as landfill.
