Who will clear up after Brexit?

I am writing this on 2 September 2019, and it is no clearer whether we will exit Europe on 31 October with or without a deal.

One thing is for sure - there will be a great deal of clear up as over two and a half years of indecision has led to lack of investment, reduction in training and has left industry at large vulnerable.

Some of the greatest British names have gone to foreign investors due to uncertainty in the home market and, to some extent, has caused the weakness of the pound against other major trading currencies. As the fortunes of other countries have improved, for example Poland, many service industry workers have taken the opportunity to return to their country of origin as there is still huge uncertainty regarding the freedom of movement. This is against a

backdrop of one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United Kingdom for many years. Our service industries are reliant on foreign labour and are not, in general, attractive to people leaving college.

Within the cleaning industry there are no requirements under which operatives are recruited against prescribed criteria - this is both a blessing and a curse. The low entry level allows employment for all with no set skills requirement, and the potential for a shortage of any labour is clear for all to see. What should we do? Or more importantly, what should we have been doing?

In the late 70s/early 80s, I vividly remember posting flyers through people’s front doors to encourage them to apply for vacancies we could not fill.

Perhaps it is time that we reviewed why we incarcerate individuals who are not a threat to society? Only today it is being reported on the BBC news that a young offenders institution locks teenagers up for 23.5 hours a day on occasion – how can this integrate them back into society? There are hundreds if not thousands of jobs that are not filled that would not put the public at risk, but that could benefit society.

Also, individuals working in society for the benefit of society do not have to be reintroduced to society. Not every offender is a suitable candidate for such roles but, as with all jobs, a rigorous risk assessment and a review of the abilities of the individual may help us to provide a suitable workforce for the future.

We project-managed specialist subcontractors and used our own mercury vacuum cleaner, which can detect even the tiniest traces of mercury, to allay any fears that there may have been any mercury spillages - for example, from the melted fluorescent tubes. No mercury was found at the site.

With the aim of getting the area to the stage where it was ready for refitting and refurbishment, we worked closely with the university’s maintenance and estates team in order to manage the on-site challenges, which included undertaking the clean-up while also allowing access for students and staff to other parts of the block. After an eight-week clean-up programme the building was given the all clear for refurbishment work to begin.
