What is a good story about Harmony? I don’t have a story per se…I must say I’m a little addicted to the Harmony virtual garage sale and get a total kick out of the Harmony forum. The opinions of the community members are quite entertaining.

WHAT IS… Your name: Catherine.

Your children’s names: Ben and Emma.

When did you move to Harmony? 2013.

What street do you live on? Forty Banks.

What do you love most about Harmony? The friendly community in combination with the serenity of the beautiful landscape.

What are your kids’ favorite things about Harmony? Enjoying the pool and tennis courts, all in walking distance.

Where did you move from? Property in St. Cloud.

What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? Before moving to Harmony we lived on acreage, which was wonderful, but the children were isolated from friends and playdates had to be arranged, which included me driving them everywhere.

What I love about Harmony is it’s as easy as stepping out the front door to be with friends.

What is your favorite weekend activity? My favorite weekend activity is ballroom dancing. I enjoy the journey of practicing for competitions and shows.

Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? A few months ago, my daughter and I found a dog that had escaped. We had a great, caring response from neighbors as we went door to door to find the owners. After posting it on the community forum, the dog was reunited with his family.

What do you miss most? Playing my music super loud.

Are there any recommendations for other neighbors? Don’t be afraid to smile and wave—it can make someone’s day.

What is your background? My background is primarily in medical sales. I was a business owner of travel medicine clinics for the past six years. I’m in the process of opening an ALF. The entrepreneurial spirit seems to suit me. I love sales and currently assist with the advertising of

Do you do any charity or non-profit work? As a competitive ballroom dancer, I have performed for various charities including Give Kids the World and Senior Centers. The last event was a video for Keep Dancing Orlando for the victims of the Pulse night club.

What do you do for fun? Fun is always incorporated in everything I do. Spending time with my kids, friends and family, not to mention my wonderful boyfriend, Anthony. Life is good.

Who is your role model and why? My mother is my role model. She is kind, smart, beautiful—the list goes on. She has raised four children of her own along with many foster children. She has taught us all to be independent and to enjoy life to the fullest. At age 64 she went back to the University to get her four-year degree. She works as a mental health counselor in New Zealand. She is loved and admired.

What else should we know about you or your family?

I was born and raised in New Zealand. Proud to be a Kiwi. This is an endearing name New Zealanders like to be called. I have lived in the States for 25 years. This is my opportunity to talk about my two incredible children. My son, Ben, is 20 and is currently attending the University of Florida, where he is majoring in political science and business. He is doing a summer three-month internship with senator Marco Rubio. He is following his passion and pursuing a career in politics. I am extremely proud of Ben. He is independent, and works when he is not studying.

Very proud to call this extraordinary, kind young man, my son. My daughter, Emma, is 16 and is starting Valencia as part of the dual enrollment program Harmony High offers. Emma has just learned the freedom of getting her driver’s license. She loves animals and has a daily job as a dog walker. Emma is an avid tennis player and is on the Harmony High tennis team. She has danced for many years and now does pointe ballet. I’m extremely proud of Emma. I know she has an incredible future ahead of her. She is a darling. n

CROWDFUNDING—NOT ALL FUNDS ARE CONSIDERED EQUAL

C

rowdfunding has become an innovative and popular means to raise money for charitable causes, startups, and personal expenses such as education costs or medical bills by advertising a need online to garnish support from generous donors/backers.

However, not all monies raised from crowdfunding are considered equal and their tax consequences vary considerably.

Some users of crowdfunding offer donors a token item such as a t-shirt, CD or DVD for contributions made to them above a certain minimum dollar amount as a way of thanking the donor for their contribution. These token items might trigger sales taxes for the recipient of the funds based on the value of the token item(s) or amount donated (if amount donated is deemed less than the value of the token item). Sometimes, the mere presence of the token item might make the entire contribution taxable as business income to the recipient. It might be worth stating on your crowdfunding page the value any token items ahead of time. Alternatively, avoiding token items altogether can simplify any confusion of whether or not business income is being generated by the recipient.

Contributions made by donors who receive nothing in return are likely to be viewed as making non-taxable gifts to the recipient. Donors may currently give up to $14,000 per year per donee without the need to file a gift tax return. One important point to mention, recipients of crowdfunding are often not charitable organizations. Donations made to such causes are not tax deductible for the donor, regardless of the worthiness of the cause.

This might be relevant if you want to make a donation to individuals or families with medical and school needs.

Lastly, crowdfunding can be used to support a business. Funds received will be taxable to the recipient business. However, a startup business is likely to have startup expenses to offset the income received.

Ultimately, crowdfunding may or may not result in taxable income for the recipient and may or may not require the donor to file a gift tax return. n

This month we spotlight our friends and Harmony owned business Triple Palm Lawn and Landscape.

What makes your business unique?

Triple Palm is unique because it is a resident-owned business and currently all of the employees are also Harmony residents. The advantage of being a Harmony resident-owned business is the ability to address client concerns as soon as they occur. David, the owner of Triple Palm, often tends to client matters after hours or when it’s most convenient for their schedules.

He can quickly visit properties, quote services, and perform repairs at a moment’s notice.

Can you describe the “culture” or “philosophy” of your business?

Triple Palm’s philosophy is making the customer’s happiness a priority.

Attention to detail and customer satisfaction is the most important in this business. As a resident, we want our neighbor’s yards to look nice, and the neighborhood as a whole, to look well maintained.

Can you tell us a little history of your company? Why did you choose to start it in Harmony?

David began Triple Palm in 2009 outside of Harmony. His focus on Harmony began almost immediately. David saw an opportunity to grow, with many homes being built in the green neighborhood at that time.

Ultimately, he moved to Harmony in 2011 and has experienced exponential growth since then. By living onsite, he was able to cut back drive time and be more attentive to his client’s needs. It is often that David is up early on a weekend morning monitoring irrigation systems or ensuring newly installed sod and plants are being watered as necessary.

Can you tell the readers a little about your company? What services do you offer?

Triple Palm is a landscaping and lawn maintenance business. Triple Palm provides a variety of additional services such as tree trimming, irrigation repair, landscape installation, sod replacement, debris removal, and even patio pavers. We have worked with, not only Harmony residents, but also Harmony’s various builders, realtors, property management companies, HOA and Harmony Development.

Triple Palm is a proud supporter of Harmony’s Soccer Club! We recently built and donated, along with Farrell Construction, the small soccer goals being used at practice and during games. In addition, Triple Palm has also helped sponsor the annual Boosterthon event at the Harmony Community School. In the past, Triple Palm was also a sponsor of the volunteers at Harmony festivals (Dark Sky, Winter Festival, etc). Being a contributor to the local activities and helping them to continue to be successful is important to Triple Palm.

Anything else you would like to mention or highlight?

Triple Palm has been doing business in Harmony for seven years and has enjoyed the relationships we have made along the way through our business with neighbors who we have met at the activities and festivals.

We are very happy to be living in a neighborhood that is filled with good people that make the community a great place and makes us glad we are raising our kids here. Triple Palm would like to thank all its clients who have allowed us over the years to help them with their lawn and landscape needs. “EXCUSE ME, CAN YOU LET ME IN PLEASE?”

I

f you are a frequent user of the pools, you might have heard this question as it seems to be voiced frequently. Of course, pool access is strictly limited for a number of reasons and one of those reasons is crowding. If you’ve lived in Harmony for any period of time, you’ve probably heard the regular requests for an additional pool—mainly due to crowding at the existing pools. While another pool is not likely at any time in the near future, you can help with the crowding situation.

Before we get to that, let me review the history of pool security here; also know that every community with a pool faces issues with security. To my knowledge, none have found the answer to keeping intruders out. So, in the beginning there was the Swim Club which had minimal fencing and a gate with a key lock. Keys were issued at the Sales & Information Galley and carried a $10 deposit which was intended to add value to the key as well as ensure its return when people moved out of Harmony. As Harmony grew, the Ashley pool was added which required the same key. And, at some point, the boat docks had to be secured mainly due to increasing vandalism to the docks and boats—again, with the same key.

While that seemed like a good plan, the reality was that it became a monster to handle, partly because of the cash involved and the attendant record-keeping. So, the deposit requirement was lifted, which really didn’t work anyway, because folks moved out but kept the key and came back for the pools. OR, gave the key to their friends or relatives…soon, it seemed like there were more people in the pools than there were residents living here. Compounding that was that Info Gallery personnel always wanted to be nice so all one had to do was walk in and ask for a key and they’d hand you one. The problem became readily apparent when we were routinely making 100 keys several times a year. Suppliers had keys, Realtors had keys, contractors had keys, and it seemed that most people in a 10-mile radius had keys!!

We also became aware of people going over and through the fences, so we raised the fences and added landscaping around them to make climbing over them more difficult. Cameras were added to monitor the occasional intrusion—especially at night—which led to motion-detector security lights to limit those nighttime intrusions. Of course, as the key situation was realized to be unworkable, we transitioned to a keycard access system which has been modified several times as certain loopholes were discovered. The end result is the current system of keycards and the attendant rules governing them and access to those secured facilities.

It has been quite a journey and the current system works quite well, even though some say the access rules are too restrictive. However, far more people say those rules are not restrictive enough. And this is where pool users can help. There are signs posted asking you to not open the gate for anyone not having a card that works. This includes those WITH cards that don’t work. The reason is that cards go dead for any number of reasons, including the expiration of a renter’s lease, violation of the rules which can cause suspension of access privileges and several other reasons. In short, if a card doesn’t work, that person doesn’t belong inside.

Also, people hang outside the gates waiting for someone to leave and then scoot inside and/or will lift a small child over the fence and have the child press the gate button and come in.

The system works when it’s allowed to work. Harmony’s compliance with Dark Sky principles means that not only can we enjoy the awesome night skies, but wildlife is kept healthier and safer.

A branch of science called scotobiology studies the role of darkness in living organisms. Research shows that the interruption of darkness by light pollution creates drastic effects for many organisms.

It changes not only their food gathering and feeding habits, but their mating and reproduction

behavior, migration behavior (in birds and insects) and social behavior. Scotobiologists estimate that about 30% of vertebrates and 60% of invertebrates are nocturnal, meaning that they depend on darkness. Their everyday behaviors are biologically evolved to adapt in uninterrupted darkness. One sad example of this is sea turtle populations in Florida: in swimming/crawling towards artificial light sources instead of their natural horizon of the ocean, this unfortunately leads to a massive amount of deaths for these hatchlings each year.

Human circadian rhythms are also affected by light at night, so our health can also be adversely affected by the effects of light pollution. Some research links light during night time hours to human cancers and psychological disorders.

Excessive light also wastes energy, costs money and can be intrusive, causing glare and lighting trespass. Aging eyes are more affected by glare, too.

Nobody would suggest that people go entirely without light at night. Outdoor lighting enables people to see essential detail so they can be active at night. Good lighting can enhance safety and security, emphasize features of architectural or historical significance, or call attention to commercial premises by means of area lighting or signs. There are steps we can take to reduce impacts, though. Use only what you need when adding new fixtures, use Dark Sky compliant lighting (full cut-off or shielded lights that point downward or not above 90 degrees, avoid blue toned bulbs, install the lowest appropriate wattage bulbs for that application, use “shut off ” controls such as sensors, timers, motion detectors, and limit the height of fixtures. And if you haven’t gotten out to enjoy the wonders of the Milky Way, you may be dazzled…it is a wondrous sight you will never forget. n
