ou might have heard about it, talked about it, but meet the members of the Social Committee Core team. From Left to Right, Lena Lamar, Brenda Cisneros, Lorraine Rocco, and Katie Williams, and with Sunnie Templeton that grace the cover of the May issue of Harmony Life Magazine.

What do the Core members do? Plan, carry out, and make sure all Social Committee Activities run

some races, and dust off those heals for a Harmony New Year’s Eve, to start things off right in 2016.

How do you get a hold of us ? Well I could throw out an email that would get answered at some point. But we are busy bodies that have full time families with a full time plate of things to do.

We are social networkers. Find us on Facebook, at the activities, and don’t be shy to throw out suggestions, volunteer, or start a mini group yourself like the Harmony Strides Group. We will be happy to support anything that will help us grow in a positive neighborhood and continue living in Harmony.

We don’t act alone. There are many that have joined sub- committees; Eva Horner does the Bike Rides every Friday and Yoga every Saturday morning, Tomiko Radcliff makes sure Zumba is hopping, Kerul Kassel fills our hearts with smiles and our cups with coffee along with the Welcome Committee, and Jannia Mendez Hikes it through Harmony. re you thinking of renting out your home or investment property and becoming a landlord? Though it may sound simple, it is anything but. Take a moment and consider what’s really involved. Here are seven questions to ask yourself before becoming a landlord.

1. Do you have a lease? Finding a lease isn’t as easy as purchasing one in Staples. You’ll need to have a lease specific to Florida and one option is to hire an attorney to write the lease for you.

2. Where will you hold your tenant’s security deposit? There are specific laws regarding the holding of other people’s money. It’s important to know these laws.

3. How will you handle tenant repairs? Landlord and Tenant laws require that you make serious repairs quickly. Will you be available when the tenant call comes in at 2 in the morning?

4. How will you collect the rent? Will you collect in person, by mail or are you set up to collect rent electronically? Collecting the rent is an important part of being a landlord as that is how you get paid. With today’s technology, most tenants expect to have the option to pay online.

Health First Sees Faster Recoveries with Robotic Orthopedic Surgery

J

oint replacement surgery can be a daunting proposition. It requires planning and precision and leads to weeks of recovery time. Thanks to new developments in robotic surgery technology, however, these surgeries are quicker, more beneficial and less difficult to recover from than ever.

Dr. Kenneth Sands, orthopedic surgeon at Health First’s Viera Hospital Center for Joint Replacement, says using MAKOplasty® technology drastically improves the way these operations are conducted.

“A MAKO procedure differs from traditional joint replacement because of the use of the robotic arm. Joint replacement surgery is an art and a science,” says Sands, a Fellowship-trained Orthopedic Total Joint Specialist. “The robotic arm improves the accuracy of the surgery. Over the past few decades, we have been able to use computers to improve the accuracy of our implant placement; however, in the end, we still used traditional jigs to make our final cuts. With the MAKO robotic arm, the computer planning stage is accurately implemented with the assistance of the robotic arm. We are also able to virtually perform the surgery and balance the knee prior to making our final cuts of the bone.”

Because of this precision, the outlook for patients needing partial knee replacement surgery becomes even better.

“The benefit is the potential for improved accuracy,” says Sands, who specializes in hip resurfacing, anterior total hip replacements, computerassisted surgery, total and partial knee replacements, complex and revision total joint surgery, and hip and knee arthroscopy. “The hope is that improved

accuracy leads to improved longevity, which in turn should result in a better outcome for the patient.”

This technology is making joint replacement better now and in the future.

“I find the benefits to be most pronounced with partial knee surgery,” he says. “MAKO is currently trialling a total knee system that may be available next year.” These improvements come with no added risk, either. “The risks of MAKOplasty vs. traditional joint replacement are relatively the same.”

Here’s what Dr. Sands has to say about who should expect better results from this surgery: “Generally, at this time in my practice, it will depend on if the patient is a good candidate for a partial knee replacement vs. a total knee replacement,” he says. “Not all patients are good candidates for a partial knee replacement. Numerous factors play a role, including the patient’s age, weight, deformity, expectations and degree of arthritis.”

Depending on the patient, recovery is generally quick.

“The majority of the partial knee replacement MAKOplasties can expect a relatively quick initial recovery,” Sands says. “The initial recovery is the time that it takes for the patient to wean themself from a cane and return to the majority of their normal activities. This may take anywhere from one to six weeks. Generally, the recovery time is faster than a total knee replacement.”

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony’s abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents.

One of the ways Harmony provides opportunities to interact with wildlife is through providing places for fishing, such as the Buck Lake docks, the boats (including pontoon boats, canoes, and fishing kayaks) that residents can take out onto the lake, and the fishing platform at the end of one of the boardwalks from around Long Pond. You can also fish from several areas along the shoreline of Cat Lake.

The lakes have a long history of being fished by Native Americans, early European settlers, and more recently by folks from all around Central Florida attracted to the pristine quality and undeveloped beauty of our lakes. A few Harmony residents sometimes offer fishing how-to events; if you are interested, please use one of Harmony’s Facebook pages to request that such an event be scheduled.

Do be aware that any and all fishing requires barbless hooks, because most of the fish species are catch-and-release, and barbed hooks cause much more serious injuries to the fish reducing their likelihood of survival once you throw them back in. Animals, especially birds and turtles, entangled in fishing line can suffer from a variety of problems; the restricted ability to move can lead to drowning or starvation, vulnerability to predators, infections and even limb amputation as the animal struggles against the line. Earlier this year a Sand Hill Crane was seen on the golf course with fishing line tangled around its legs, a heartbreaking sight. One way that Harmony endeavors to help residents manage their fishing line is through our fishing line recycling containers, one of which is near the entrance to Buck Lake, and the other is on the fishing platform off the Long Pond boardwalk, so please collect your used fishing line and deposit it into these receptacles.

If you use sinkers, jigs, or weights, please make sure they do not contain lead, a known toxin that affects all wildlife. An alligator that becomes attracted to people due to fishing activity is a dead alligator, as it will quickly be reported, removed, and killed. Also, be aware that while the first few feet of pond edge are shallow, the bottom quickly drops off steeply, as the ponds were designed to retain a large volume of rain and run-off.

Fishing can be both relaxing, providing time for reflection, stress relief, and a deep, quiet connection with the natural world, and it can be exciting, too, when a you hook a live one. It’s an activity that is a great opportunity for family quality time, fun camaraderie, or peaceful solitude. Please take some time to enjoy Harmony’s bountiful fishing amenities, and remember to exercise care for yourself, your family and friends, and respect for our natural world.
