YANG JIECHANG BIOGRAPHY Website
Yang Jiechang is known for his large-scale works in ink and mineral colours on silk, as well as for his unconventional calligraphy. Yet, he uses a variety of media such as installation, sculpture, video and performance. In his work, traditional Chinese techniques, aesthetics and philosophy form an organic whole with contemporary concepts. Yang does not consider himself a traditional ink painter or calligrapher, but rather a contemporary scholar. He emphasises not only the use of the brush, but also a kind of pragmatic spirituality anchored in the here and now. Yang Jiechang was born in 1956 in Foshan (Canton, PR China). He was taught calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting from a young age. Between 1978 and 1982 he studied Chinese painting at the Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy. He also taught there until his departure for Europe in 1988. He began his artistic career in Europe with the exhibition "Magiciens de la terre" at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, to which he was invited by Jean-Hubert Martin. Yang Jiechang lives and works in Paris and Heidelberg. He has taken part in numerous exhibitions around the globe, including: "Paris pour escale" (ARC, Paris/2001), the "Shanghai Biennale" (1998), the "Gwangju Biennale" (2002), the "Venice Biennale" (2003), "Guangzhou Triennale" (2003/2005), "La Force de l'Art – 1st Paris Triennale" (2006), "Liverpool Biennale" (2007), "Istanbul Biennale" (2007), "Moscow Biennale" (2009), "Lyon Biennale" (2009)," French May" (Hong Kong 2001/2015), "Carambolages" (Grand Palais, Paris 2016), "Ink Art" Metropolitan Museum, New York 2013), "Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World"
