WANG DU 王度 BIOGRAPHY B. 1956, WUHAN, CHINA; L IVES AND WORKS IN PARIS, FRANCE
Wang Du, a key figure in the 1980s Chinese avant-garde, is an internationally acclaimed sculptor and installation artist. He studied at the Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy (1981 1985). Leaving China for France in 1990 in the aftermath of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Wang was immediately struck by Western media pluralism and the widening gulf between reality and its mediated representation. He established his signature approach in his first Paris solo exhibition, Reliques (1994), creating sculptures based on news photographs that physicalize the framing process: elements cropped out of the original images are omitted from the sculptures. Works such as The Modes (2006–2007)—sculptures of crumpled newspapers in various languages— and New Photo d'identité (2021), featuring French President Emmanuel Macron wearing a protective mask, interrogate authenticity, information consumption, and the ephemeral nature of mass media images. His recent series pushes this investigation further by incorporating errors and anomalies generated during 3D scanning and printing, underscoring how reproductive technologies

dictate our perception of reality. Wang Du’s work is part of many major public and private collections around the globe. Wang’s art has been disseminated widely in art criticism, documentaries, contemporary artist dictionaries, and art books. His work has also been covered by many international magazines, newspapers, and TV and radio stations. In 2008 and 2012, Wang Du held solo exhibitions at Tang Contemporary Art in Beijing, titled “International Kebab” and “Musée d’Art Contemporain de la Chine” respectively. His works have been exhibited throughout international museums and contemporary art institutions including the 1999 Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, Vancouver Art Gallery, Rodin Gallery in South Korea, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Deitch Projects in New York, and Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover, Germany.
