Founded by Coast Guard veteran Joseph Kadison on the docks of Philadelphia, QMS begins selling marine clothing, hardware and equipment to local seamen.
A Life magazine cover story on Ernest Hemingway features two photos of “the greatest American writer of this century” in his Oysterman cap, creating a surge of demand.
The company shifts its focus exclusively to headwear. It’s the perfect creative outlet for Kadison, a longtime lover and relishes working on their details.
Steeped in the grit and pleasures of life on the water, Quaker Marine Supply offers a distinctive, irreverent take on classic East Coast style. QMS suits the aquatic life year-round, so when it came steps from the water: the Long Island Sound in Southold and the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
This season, we’re spending the holidays at home in the city. After a busy year that took us everywhere from Fishers Island to Havana, it’s nice to pull up a stool at our local watering hole for a catch-up and navigators, dune walkers and wave runners; yachtsmen, anglers, islanders, and beach bums. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be out of place sporting our wares on Fifth Avenue.
We try not to take ourselves too seriously, but our products and legacy are another story…

Ned Kitchel, a former L.L. Bean merchandiser with a love of the outdoors, acquires QMS and moves its headquarters to Portland, Maine.
In the midst of the Great Recession and crippled shuts down. Veteran retailer and long time admirer of the brand, Kevin McLaughlin, acquires the brand with hopes of continuing its legacy.
Now based in Brooklyn, New York, the revamped collection, a range of hats and gear inspired by the brand’s heritage and classic East Coast style.
Inspired by our heritage, we designed seasons. Knit in a chunky gauge cotton, it features the traditional roll-neck that has been a maritime classic for generations. New this fall, we developed a women’s version of this best-seller

When you need to polish it up a little, reach for our Loafer Jacket. Somewhere between a sport coat and a chore jacket, the Loafer can be dressed up or down with ease. This season, we teamed up with Abraham Moon & Sons, one of the last great woolen mills in England, to offer a range of Shetland Herringbones. They have a look and feel that only 187 years of heritage can produce.
Our MacArthur Shirt is great year round, but really shines in the cold. Our soft corduroys and densely woven twills are necessary layers in your rotation this winter. The more tailored Chore Shirt features a trio of deadstock Italian shirting fabrics that can take whatever you throw at them (including dinner with the in-laws).
Complete with a western yoke and pearl snaps, the latest capsule of limited-edition Western Seawashed Shirts includes 10 different checks, plaids and tattersalls from our favorite European mills.
Our Hudson Jacket and CPO Shirt are cut from robust, yet soft Melton wool – the original cold-weather fabric for naval simplicity that doesn’t compromise on performance (and looks mighty sharp).
Our take on the 1800s French working class uniform serves as a practical, protective piece of outerwear that can stand in for a sport coat in a pinch. Available in a colorful range of herringbone twill, denim, and carpenter’s cloth in both men’s and women’s sizing.
A staple around the turn, the Quilted Vest is our pinch-hitting favorite that can stand alone, but layers well throughout the winter.
We designed the Bridge Jacket for when the weather isn’t messing around. Based on the classic USN Deck Jacket that was trusted by generations of naval servicemen, ours is made of heavyweight cotton canvas and features a fully quilted lining.
Actually, they do make ‘em like they used to. Quaker Marine began selling hats in 1949 on the docks of Philadelphia. We are proud to offer an updated assortment of these original styles from the QMS archive that have stood the test of time and remain as relevant today as they were over 75 years ago. All made by hand in the USA.

The Bateau pays homage to an original Quaker Marine sweater from the early 1970s, featuring breton stripes and a button-neck crew collar. Now updated in a sturdy 100% cotton yarn, we are happy to have the Bateau back in the collection.
