About Edge-Lit 8 Your first stop on the day will be the REGISTRATION DESK, where you will receive your goodie bag which contains the Edge-Lit booklet! This space also serves as an enquiry desk throughout the day – if you have any questions or issues throughout the event simply see one of our redshirt volunteers there. The registration desk is just to your right as you enter the QUAD building.

The registration desk will also serve as a sign-up point for workshops – spaces for these sessions are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

THE BOX plays host to our event dealers room, with a great range of independent books and merchandise available for sale. The Waterstones bookstall will also be found on the second-floor foyer, with titles available from our speakers and participants on the day.

Dealers areas will be closing around 5pm – please note that dealers do have the option of leaving earlier, so if there is a book you want be sure not to miss out!

There are a variety of different types of sessions throughout the day. Here’s what you can expect:

The final thing you will be given at registration is your event lanyard, which you will have to keep with you throughout the day in order to get into sessions. Attendees fill these in themselves on the day, so you can use your pen-name or social media handles if you prefer! Our redshirt volunteers will ask to see your lanyard as you head into sessions, so please have them on display or ready to show.

THE WELCOMING EVENT is an informal chance to mingle with friends old and new, and is an ideal introduction to the day for people attending for the first time.

You are of course more than welcome to come and go from the venue as you please on the day, although no outside food or drink can be brought into the QUAD building.

WORKSHOPS are interactive sessions to get you thinking about writing or areas surrounding writing. Expect to get involved in discussions and exercises!

You will find toilets on every floor – to the left of the main entrance on the ground floor, down the corridor on the lefthand side as you come onto the first floor and on the left-hand side as you come to the top of the stairs on the second floor.

GUEST OF HONOUR SESSIONS tend to be either interviews with the GoH with time for audience Q+A, or a reading from the author followed by an audience Q+A.

On the ground floor you will find the QUAD CAFÉ BAR – which will be open throughout for drink and food. You’ll also find the PARTICIPATION SPACE, which hosts both our welcoming event – where you can grab a tea or coffee and say hello to a few old friends and new faces – as well as a number of readings and book launches throughout.

On the first floor you will find THE MEETING ROOM, THE GREEN ROOM and THE DIGITAL SUITE, which are hosting our author workshops and talks throughout the day.

On the second floor you will find our two larger event spaces, THE SIR JOHN HURT CINEMA and CINEMA TWO. The Sir John Hurt Cinema hosts our panels, as well as a multi-publisher book launch, the Tim Lebbon and Christopher Golden Guest of Honour slot, the event’s everpopular raffle and the Brave New Words award ceremony.

Cinema Two hosts the remainder of our Guest of Honour sessions, as well as the Black Shuck Books multi-title launch.

PANELS feature five or six writers discussing a topic or question, with time for audience questions towards the close of the session.

TALKS are more informal than workshops, with the session leader discussing the topic and taking your questions.

BOOK LAUNCHES tend to feature readings from new titles being released, and some will offer wine and juice for attendees alongside the chance to buy any of the books launching.

The EDGE-LIT RAFFLE is a popular highlight of the event, with a live draw for a range of fantastic prizes. Tickets are £1 per strip and can be purchased from the registration desk, or one of our friendly redshirts will come to say hi and offer you a few tickets!

The BRAVE NEW WORDS AWARDS CEREMONY sees the presentation of Starburst’s literary award for new, innovative and bold writing.

If you have any issues throughout the day, feel free to come and see any of our redshirts. Please bear in mind that our redshirts are volunteers, so please treat them with courtesy and respect.

As always, Edge-Lit is a true team effort, and you’ll find a team of event-specific ‘redshirt’ volunteers alongside the QUAD staff and duty manager here to help.

If you have any concerns or queries about the venue, simply head to the ground floor Box Office, where you can have a chat with QUAD’s duty manager.

Our event registration desk will be open on the ground floor, right next to the venue’s main entrance, if you have any questions at all throughout the day. We’re happy to help point you in the right direction around Derby if you’re not familiar with the city!

Edge-Lit aims to be a welcoming event and offer a comfortable environment for everyone. If you have any concerns in this regard, feel free to see either one of our redshirts or the QUAD Duty Manager.

Edge-Lit is organised each year by Alex Davis, Literature Officer for QUAD, who will be on hand throughout to keep the day ticking along! If you have any queries, issues or concerns on the day, simply seek him out or ask any of the redshirts and they’ll be able to get in touch.

Edge-Lit Raffle This year’s Edge-Lit raffle will once again be a highlight of the day, and closes off official proceedings at the event. Guests of Honour NEIL SPRING was born in South Wales. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Somerville College, Oxford. His first novel, The Ghost Hunters, was made into an ITV drama in 2015 and his second novel, The Watchers, has also been optioned for television. Neil lives in London.

Special Guest With over 30 years experience in film and television, STEPHEN VOLK is here to launch his new non-fiction book COFFINMAKER’S BLUES: COLLECTED WRITINGS ON TERROR. He is best known as creator of the controversial BBCTV “Hallowe’en hoax” Ghostwatch, a landmark of horror drama, and the multi-award-winning ITV drama series Afterlife starring Andrew Lincoln and Lesley Sharp. Speakers and Panelists Simon Bestwick is the author of six horror, dark fantasy and post-apocalyptic novels, most recently Wolf’s Hill, and several collections and mini-collections of short fiction. His novelette Breakwater was released last year by Tor.com, and his novella Angels of the Silences by Omnium Gatherum Press. His short fiction has been widely published in magazines such as Black Static and anthologies such as The Devil and the Deep, and reprinted in Best Horror of the Year (and Best of the Best Horror of the Year).

His previous hobbies included avoiding gainful employment, but this ended in failure and he now has a job again. He is currently striving to escape this awful fate. He lives on the Wirral with the long-suffering fellow author Cate Gardner, and uses far too many semicolons. His latest books are A Love Like Blood, available now from Dark Minds Press and consisting of two all-new novelettes, and a new full-length short story collection, And Cannot Come Again. He’s currently working on a new novel, his first screenplay, and a serial for his Patreon page. It keeps him out of mischief. Some of the time, at least.

Zen Cho is the author of a short story collection (Spirits Abroad) and two historical fantasy novels (Sorcerer to the Crown and The True Queen). She has won the Crawford Award and the British Fantasy Award for Best Newcomer, and is a Hugo and Campbell Award finalist.

Adam Christopher’s debut novel Empire State was SciFiNow’s Book of the Year and a Financial Times Book of the Year. Speakers and Panelists Alison Clarke is a writer/artist who also enjoys painting and drawing. She also experiences life as a spoken word artist. Alison was born in Derby, and now lives in Canada. She sees travelling as magical and also another way to learn.

Alison is the author of The Sisterhood, a young adult fantasy novel about Oppie, a sorceress’ daughter, and her best friend, Aurie, who is a dragon, and the journey they go on to save the universe. The Sisterhood is Book One of The Sisterhood Series, for which Alison won the award 2016 Writer Of The Year by Diversity magazine. The second book in the series is Racine which continues the magical odyssey. It was nominated for Book Of The Year. The third book in the series is Circle which makes The Sisterhood Series a trilogy.

Genevieve Cogman is a British author of fantasy literature and role-playing games. She is the author of the Invisible Library series: she works for the NHS and lives in the North of England.

Dan Coxon is the editor of the bi-annual weird and uncanny fiction journal The Shadow Booth, as well as the anthology This Dreaming Isle (Unsung Stories; shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards 2018).

His writing has appeared in The Guardian, Salon, Black Static, STORGY, Unthology and many other places, sometimes under the name Ian Steadman. He has been longlisted for the STORGY Shallow Creek competition and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. Matt Hill grew up in Tameside, Greater Manchester, and is the author of three SF novels set in nearfuture Britain: THE FOLDED MAN, Philip K. Dick Award finalist GRAFT, and (as M.T. Hill) ZERO BOMB. His next novel THE BREACH will be published in 2020.

Tim Major’s love of speculative fiction is the product of a childhood diet of classic Doctor Who episodes and an early encounter with Triffids. Speakers and Panelists Alex Reeve lives in Buckinghamshire and is a university lecturer. The Anarchists’ Club is the second in a series of books featuring Leo Stanhope, following on from the Richard & Judy Book Club 2019 pick The House on Half Moon Street.

Anna Stephens is the author of the Godblind trilogy, of which the first two volumes, Godblind and Darksoul, have now been published. Bloodchild will be published in summer 2019.

A literature graduate, Anna loves all things speculative, from Doctor Who and Firefly to classic Hammer and Universal horror films and beyond.

As a beginner in Historical European Martial Arts, with a focus on Italian longsword, and a second Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate, she’s no stranger to the feeling of being punched (or stabbed) in the face, which is more help than you would expect when writing fight scenes.

Do NOT call it time travel! Born in Bristol and educated in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and pick up a pen. She still has no idea what she wants to do when she grows up.

Adrian Tchaikovsky was born in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, and headed off to university in Reading to study psychology and zoology. For reasons unclear even to himself, he subsequently ended up in law. Adrian has since worked as a legal executive in both Reading and Leeds and now writes full time. He also lives in Leeds, with his wife and son. Adrian is a keen live role-player and occasional amateur actor. He has also trained in stage-fighting and keeps no exotic or dangerous pets of any kind – possibly excepting his son.

Adrian is the author of the critically acclaimed Shadows of the Apt series, the Echoes of the Fall series and other novels, novellas and short stories. His novels include The Tiger and the Wolf, which won the BFS Robert Holdstock award for best fantasy novel, and Children of Time, which won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in the award’s 30th anniversary year.

Robin Triggs is a writer of science fiction, crime and urban fantasy. His debut novel, Night Shift, was published in November 2018 by Flame Tree Press and has received enthusiastic reviews. He also works as a freelance copy-editor and proofreader.

Originally from Bradford, he has since lived in rural Norfolk, urban Norwich, studied archaeology in Belfast and worked in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. He was Chair of Abingdon Writers’ before life moved him on; he now lives in Cambridgeshire with his wife and young daughter. He’s currently working, between CBeebies marathons, on Night Shift’s sequel and other miscellaneous writings.

Speakers and Panelists Danie Ware is a single working Mum with long-held interests in role-playing, re-enactment, vinyl art toys and personal fitness. She went to all all-boys’ public school, gained an English degree from UEA, and spent most of her twenties clobbering her friends with an assortment of steel cutlery. These days, she juggles writing books and raising a teenager with working for Forbidden Planet (London) Ltd. In those rare times when she’s not writing, working, or on manoeuvres with her son, she usually falls over exhausted.

Danie is the author of the critically acclaimed Ecko series, published by Titan Books and Children of Artifice, an urban fairy story, published by Fox Spirit Books. She writes Sisters of Battle for the Black Library, and Judge Anderson for Rebellion Publishing, and she has had short stories published in numerous anthologies. Jen Williams is the author of the Copper Cat trilogy and the award-winning Winnowing Flame trilogy. When not frowning over notebooks she’s also a bookseller and a copywriter, takes Thundercats too seriously and is partially responsible for the creation of Super Relaxed Fantasy Club. She lives in London with her partner and their small ridiculous cat, and she’s partial to mead, if you’re buying.

Brave New Words Awards What is The Brave New Words Award?

Starburst Magazine’s Brave New Words Award is designed to highlight creators who are outstanding in their field. The nominees have all produced exciting work that breaks new ground in the field of Cult Entertainment. In short, words that are brave and new. Though the prize is open to editors, writers, publishers, and bloggers, this year’s crop of finalists are all novelists. The Finalists are: Aliya Whiteley - The Loosening Skin published by Unsung Stories.

The Loosening Skin is a body horror story of sorts. It is set in a world where every seven years people not only shed their skin, but also their relationships. Whiteley use’s this premise to explore identity, love, sex and the idea of stealing others’ lives.

Claire North - 84K published by Orbit/Little Brown Claire North’s work is no stranger to the Brave New Words list, as her previous novel, A Sudden Appearance of Hope, appeared on last year’s final selection. 84K is a very different book, as you’d expect from this award. A frightening yet all too likely look at Britain’s near future.

Tade Thompson – Rosewater published by Orbit/Little Brown Rosewater was one of Starburst’s favourite books of last year, and though it has had an interesting publication history, qualifies for this year’s award.
