WHAT IS INVISALIGN? Invisalign braces are a virtually invisible alternative to conventional braces. Designed to straighten your teeth, but barely visible, Invisalign treatment consists of a series of almost invisible aligners that are changed every 2 weeks.

Invisalign braces are made-to-measure and are designed to fit your teeth and your teeth only.

By changing your Invisalign braces, your teeth will move little by little and week by week, until they have straightened to the position prescribed by your dentist.

With your Invisalign treatment you will receive a virtual 3D treatment plan. This will show you how your teeth will move over the course of your treatment and will allow you to see what your teeth will look like once the treatment has been completed.

HOW DOES INVISALIGN WORK? Invisalign braces work by gentling moving your teeth into their correct position. Unlike conventional braces which use wires and brackets to pull your teeth into place, Invisalign is a pain-free treatment.

To begin Invisalign treatment you will first need to undergo an initial consultation.

During your initial consultation, your dentist will discuss with you the issues you have with your teeth and the results that your trying to achieve. If your dentist believes Invisalign is suitable for straightening your teeth, with your goals in mind they will then put together a treatment plan. Once this has been put together, your dentist will then take impressions of your teeth and send the impressions to the Invisalign laboratories for processing.

The impressions made of your teeth will also be digitised into a 3D image. Using a computer your dentist will be able to plan the movement of your teeth throughout your treatment. At this stage you will be able to see a virtual 3D treatment plan and will be able to view your teeth as they currently are, your teeth throughout the process and how your teeth will look once treatment is complete.

With your treatment plan agreed, your bespoke Invisalign aligners will be custommade for you. These then have to be worn for approximately 2 weeks until you then switch to the next aligner in the series.

The number of aligners varies from patient to patient but on average a full treatment will include 18-36 aligners for both the upper and the lower teeth which will take approximately 9-18 months to complete.

WHO WILL IT WORK FOR? Invisalign braces will work for a wide variety of people. Using the braces can correct the following issues: Overcrowded teeth - this occurs when there is simply a lack of room within the jaw to accommodate all of the teeth normally.

Crossbites - this occurs when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It will usually cause one or more of the upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth.

Overbites - an overbite occurs when the upper teeth overlap significantly over the lower teeth.

Underbites - these occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth.

To find out for sure if Invisalign is the correct treatment for you, it’s important to have a consultation with an experienced Invisalign practitioner as it will often differ from patient to patient.

One of the major benefits of Invisalign braces is that they will not affect your every day life. If you’re a keen sportsman or women, or you are often involved in strenuous activities then this doesn’t need to change just because you now have Invisalign braces. With Invisalign you don’t need to worry about having sharp brackets cutting your mouth.

You can either continue to wear your braces whilst participating in your sport or activity, or if your sport or activity requires you to wear a gum shield, simply remove your Invisalign aligner, replace it with your normal gum shield and you will be good to go.

How do you look after them?

Looking after your Invisalign braces is incredibly easy. Simply brush and rinse them in lukewarm water or use the specially designed Invisalign cleaning kit. Alternatively, soak them in a solution of half Listerine and half water twice a week and then brush them to keep them clean and kill any germs.

When not wearing the braces - either when you are eating or drinking, simply store them in a cup of water. This will stop any discolouration or clouding from occurring and will prevent your saliva from drying on them.

How long does it take?

The treatment time for Invisalign varies from patient to patient but on average a full treatment includes 18-36 aligners for both the upper and the lower teeth, this will take approximately 9-18 months to complete.

Frequently asked questions How old do I have to be to have Invisalign braces?

It is recommended that you are at least 18 before you have Invisalign braces.

However, teenagers can be treated too with Invisalign teen braces.

Will Invisalign braces close the gaps between my teeth?

Yes, in the majority of cases Invisalign braces will close the gaps between teeth.

Will I need to use a retainer once my Invisalign treatment is complete?

Yes, you will. Wearing a retainer is important after having any orthodontic treatment as it ensures your teeth remain in their new position.

I have normal braces can I make the change to Invisalign braces?

This is not unheard and in many cases, the answer is yes you can. To be sure, consult your dentist who will be able to determine the best treatment for you.

Do Invisalign braces work on overbites?

Yes, Invisalign braces can work on overbites. However, as with all dental procedures it varies from patient to patient. Consult your dentist to see if Invisalign braces will work for you.

I have a bridge, am I able to get Invisalign braces?

It is hard to say without consultation. As a bridge links two or more teeth together, they offer significant resistance to tooth movement. Consult your dentist to see if you can still have Invisalign braces.

I have a crown, will this affect whether I can get Invisalign braces or not?

In most cases, this won’t be a problem. However, if you have an attachment (a small, tooth-coloured composite) then the location of your crowns must be carefully considered. Consult your dentist to see if you can still have Invisalign braces.

What are the benefits of Invisalign braces?

Invisalign offers many benefits, these include: '' The braces are clear and virtually invisible, meaning no one will know you are wearing them! '' The braces are removable, unlike many other types of braces you will be able to remove them when eating and drinking. You will also be able to brush and floss your teeth as normal. What are the clinical steps involved?

To start your Invisalign treatment you will first need an initial consultation. During this consultation your dentist will decide if Invisalign is the right option for you by discussing the issues you have with your teeth and the results you are trying to achieve.

If it is decided Invisalign is the right treatment for you, your dentist will then put together a treatment plan and take impressions of your teeth.

The impressions of your teeth will be sent to the Invisalign laboratories for processing and will also be digitised into a 3D image. Viewing this image on a computer, your dentist will then be able to plan the movement of your teeth throughout your treatment.

Your dentist will then be able to show you this 3D image and show you your teeth as they currently are, how your teeth will look throughout the process and how they will look once treatment is complete.

With your treatment plan agreed, your bespoke Invisalign aligners will be custom-made for you. These then have to be worn for approximately 2 weeks until you then switch to the next aligner in the series.
