In the future, the issue of food security will become a significant problem for society. Due to population explosion and urban development, our food may be grown in some contaminated soils. At the same time, microplastics (MPs) are widespread in natural ecosystems and are of great concern to scientists worldwide as they are thought to threaten every form of life. At the same time, agricultural systems are the most affected by microplastics, which penetrate the soil through various mechanisms and are ubiquitous in farmland (Xu et al., 2020).

Objectives: Using Beddington Farmlands as an experimental site (a former landfill site close to a sewage treatment plant and wildlife habitat, both sewage treatment plants and landfill sites are important sources of microplastics), the principle that plants can absorb microplastics is used to reuse contaminated plants and make bioplastics from contaminated plants, thereby reducing the degradation time of plastics and the environmental impact of conventional plastics.

The start of gravel extraction and landfill operations changed the landscape of the Farm beyond recognition.

Landfills and wastewater treatment plants are the most significant contributors to microplastics, hurting the environment. At the same time, people are producing waste and wastewater. Wastewater and microplastics are the main culprits in agriculture. Shortly, our crops may have to live in this polluted environment. Therefore, I would like to use the Beddington farmlands as an experimental site to think about how to reduce the environmental impact of microplastic pollution.

Beddington Farmlands is located 500 metres south of the London Borough of Merton and 600 metres west of the London Borough of Croydon boundary. It was once a mineral extraction and landfill site and received residual municipal nonhazardous waste from partner districts and industrial and commercial customers. Once the landfill area was filled, it was covered with topsoil. A lake has been formed in the western part of the site and the first phase of the landfill restoration plan has been carried out. The site also includes a series of buildings and structures associated with other waste disposal, including the landfill gas engine, leach ponds, administration building and pound bridge building, as well as a series of electricity towers running through the site. To the north is the sludge bed associated with the sewage treatment plant, located to the south east of the site. The industrial plant and further sludge beds are also located in the eastern part of the site.

Where landfills are not lined, high evaporation rate species can be planted on the landfill surface to allow any rainwater falling on the landfill to evaporate quickly into the air. This prevents the production of leachate and the migration of pollutants out of the site. Several depressions, drop tanks and retention ponds remove rainwater from the soil layer on the landfill cap so that it does not collect in puddles on the hill and erode the upper layer of the landfill cap, and use the principle of slope to drain. At the same time, the depressions direct the water into a descent channel that flows into the stormwater control basin. The rainwater is retained in the bay until any sediment settles at the bottom of the pond.

Creation of wetlands at the outlet of the sewage treatment plant and in the flowing river to purify the discharged water and regular cutting of the polluted vegetation.

3.3.1 LANDFILL GAS COLLECTION SYSTEM “Landfill gas is produced when anaerobic bacteria feed on decomposing waste. This gas is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide and small amounts of non-methane organic compounds (NMOC). A landfill cap prevents landfill gas from migrating to the atmosphere. Below the lid, a network of wells, pipes, and blowers below the cover collects landfill gas from the capped landfill and delivers it to an on-site purification plant.
