Municipal Election (March 5, 2013)

The City’s General Municipal Election will be held on March 5, 2013 to decide the Mayor and two city council seats.

Nomination papers and Candidate’s Statements can be filed with the City Clerk between November 12 – December 7, 2012.

The Federal, State, and County General Election will take place on Tuesday November 6th. If you have not registered to vote yet there is still time. Vote by mail ballot requests can be made by mailing the forms printed on the back of your sample ballot or by requesting an application from the County Clerk’s office or the City Clerk’s office. Hours and locations of polling places will be listed on the sample ballot.

San Dimas Festival of Arts' 16th Annual Wildlife Art Show

San Dimas Day at the Fair

The Wildlife Art Show is free to the public and will take place on Saturday, October 20 from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, October 21 from 10 am to 4 pm.

In addition, there will be a Premier Opening Reception and Awards Dinner on Friday, October 19 beginning at 6 pm, which will require a $25 reservation. The show will be held again this year at the beautiful San Dimas Community Building.

The Great California Shake Out The City of San Dimas will be participating in the “Great California Shake Out,” a statewide earthquake drill on October 18, 2012.

Discount tickets for San Dimas Day at the Fair are available at the Chamber of Commerce at $10.00 for adults (13 and up), and $6.00 for children (6 to 12). Children five and under are free. The Chamber accepts cash, check or major credit card as payment.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County Fair is providing San Dimas residents an opportunity to purchase a ticket for San Dimas Day at the Fair for only $5.00! This is an online only offer. Simply go to the Fair's website at www. lacountyfair.com, click “buy tickets” and enter the promo code sandimas28. You may purchase and print your ticket from your own printer.

Community News

Celebrate our great community during San Dimas Day at the L.A. County Fair Friday, September 28. This special event will feature a festive San Dimas Community Day Parade, an evening celebration honoring city officials and community heroes, and a community expo featuring San Dimas service organizations and businesses, in addition to all that the Fair has to offer. Enjoy the Fair’s entertainment and attractions and join fellow residents to pay special tribute to the City of San Dimas at the L.A. County Fair!

The San Dimas Festival of Arts presents the 16th Annual Wildlife Art Show on October 19-21.

The Wildlife Art Show will display beautiful wildlife art, including original paintings, sculptures and prints from professional artists. All exhibiting artists and some of the wildlife that inspired their artwork will be in attendance. The event will also feature Student Art for grades K - 8 from students within Bonita Unified School District.

Due to the potential of a large-scale earthquake hitting California in the future, scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey, the State Office of Emergency Services, and local within communities and encourage families and businesses to prepare a plan in case an emergency occurs.

The earthquake drill itself will occur at 10:10 am on Thursday, October 18, when millions of Californians will “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” The City encourages everyone to take part as a family, business, organization, or on an individual basis. Mandatory Commercial Recycling Assembly Bill 341, which was adopted in 2011, requires ALL businesses who generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste and ALL multifamily complexes with five or more units to have a recycling program in place in an attempt to achieve a 75% diversion rate by the year 2020.

The Goals of AB 341 are to: § Reduce commercial solid waste from landfills § Reduce greenhouse gas emissions § Create jobs and expand recycling manufacturing in California.

To be in compliance, businesses shall take one or any combination of the following actions in order to reuse, recycle, compost or otherwise divert commercial solid waste from disposal: § Self-haul. § Subscribe to recycling serviced through the City’s franchised hauler, Waste Management. § A rrange for pickup of recyclables from a third party recycler. § Other acceptable method of recycling.

The City will be making initial contact with all affected businesses and multifamily in JulyAugust to introduce the program and survey to determine existing recycling efforts.

A typical home can contain a vast array of household hazardous products used for cleaning, painting, beautifying, lubricating and disinfecting the house, yard, workshop and garage.

The chemical-based household products from a single home may seem insignificant; but, when millions of homes across Los Angeles County use similar products – handling, storing and disposing of them improperly – the combined effect becomes a major problem. The health and safety of people and animals, as well as the health of our communities and the environment is endangered when these types of products are discarded in household garbage, sinks or storm drains.

San Dimas residents will have the opportunity and convenience to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and e-waste free of charge at an L.A. County Household Hazardous and E-Waste Roundup at the following locations: Arcadia HHW/E Waste Collection Event Date: Saturday, August 18, 2012 Location: Santa Anita Race Track, Gate 6, Colorado Place, Arcadia CA 91007 Rowland Heights HHW/E Waste Collection Event Date: Saturday, August 25, 2012 Location: John A. Rowland High School, 2000 S. Otterbein Ave., Rowland Heights CA 91748 Items accepted at this event include: § Hazardous Waste – motor oil, paint, household cleaners, yardcare products, etc. § Electronic Waste – computer monitors, PC’s, printers, copiers, fax machines, ink and toner cartridges, TV’s, VCR’s, DVD players, cell phones, etc. § Universal Waste – batteries, mercury thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs, etc.

Also on the site, you can sign up with the eNotify system to receive e-mails regarding our HHW/E-Waste collection events based on the location(s) and the criteria you select. From the calendar, you can also view driving directions, location map or receive a reminder e-mail just days before the event takes place.

Community News

The bill requires all cities to develop a plan to implement this mandatory commercial recycling effective July 1, 2012. The City has developed a plan to identify affected businesses and to develop educational information to help businesses understand the requirements and how they can be compliant with the new regulation.

Got Hazardous Waste?

Gladstone Street Improvement Project from Lone Hill Avenue to Amelia Avenue On Tuesday, July 24, 2012, the City Council awarded Cash Contract No. 2012-05, Gladstone Street Improvement Project from Lone Hill Avenue to Amelia Avenue to Gentry Brothers, Inc. The construction project is estimated to cost approximately $625,000 and generally consist of the removal and reconstruction of the asphalt pavement roadway, intersection improvements at Amelia Avenue (including reconstruction of concrete curb ramps, reconstruction of concrete cross gutters, construction of concrete curb, construction of asphalt berm, and construction of asphalt sidewalk), installation of sewer laterals and traffic striping.

The construction is anticipated to begin in mid-August 2012 and should be completed by or before October 31, 2012.

Please note the street improvement project will entail some temporary street closures during the construction phase and delays may be expected. Please observe and follow the posted temporary traffic control and detour signs. We apologize for an inconvenience this may cause, but the City is planning for the least amount of inconvenience to the residents as is possible.

San Dimas Canyon Hike through the Hills

When: Saturday, August 25 Time: 9 am Fee: $3 per person; Registration is limited to the first 30 participants.

Level: Moderate This hike will begin at Horsethief Canyon Park. Upon departure, you will hike down past the Equestrian Center to the Nature Center. After a short tour, you will climb the hills aligned with flowering cacti. This hike highlights sweeping vistas extending across San Dimas, as well as beautiful wild flowers, lush trees, and various types of flowering cacti. Featured wildlife include hawks, owls, reptiles, and even a few deer!

Youth in grades 6-12 are encouraged to become part of the Teen Action Committee. Teens plan citywide special events and gain volunteer and leadership experience. Meet new friends and become a valuable member of your community while having fun. Meetings held September 20, October 18, November 8 and December 6 and are supervised by trained recreation staff. Lift and work out on your own in our Weight and Fitness Room which is equipped with free weights, Life Fitness Equipment, exercise bikes, and a treadmill. The weight and fitness room is co-ed and open during all hours of operation.

Ongoing classes for ages 16 years and up are offered.

Day and evening classes are available. Professionally certified instructors incorporate low impact movements. Classes include Beginning, Stretch & Tone, Hi/Low, Yoga, Cardio Boot Camp, Kickboxing, and STEP. Call for class schedule.

Sports Courts These 40 by 20 foot hardwood courts can be used for racquetball or badminton. Badminton use must be reserved in advance.

Racquetball can be either drop in or advance reservations.

Adult Lap Swim

Where can you find a heated competition pool that is open for that early morning or late evening workout? At the San Dimas Swim and Racquet Club! Pool closed during December and January.

Hours are 6:15 am - 7:30 am and 5:30 pm - 7 pm

Personal Training A certified fitness instructor is available by appointment to assist you in meeting your fitness needs. The trainer can aid in assessing your fitness level, designing an exercise program, developing health and fitness goals, and assisting in many other areas. Please call for more information. There is an additional fee for this service.

SilverSneakers SilverSneakers is a program for older adults 65 and up who area member of certain health plans. You may be eligible to enjoy the amenities at the San Dimas Swim & Racquet Club free during hours of operation. Check your health plan to see if you can take advantage of SilverSneakers.

Then, just come down and sign up. It’s that easy!

Facility Rental: The Swim and Racquet Club pools are available for rental. Please call for specific rates and times.

Fall Swimming Lessons at the Swim and Racquet Club Do you want to continue your child in swim lessons from the summer or were they not able to take lessons during summer? Then sign your child up for our Fall Swim Lessons! The pools are kept heated throughout the year and some of the same wonderful instructors from the summer will be back to continue teaching this Fall. Limited class space available so make sure to mark our registration dates on your calendar.

Ahoy Matey!! Cast off on a kayaking voyage highlighting the canals of Little Naples. You will explore the beautiful channels featuring some of the most scenic water-front properties of Long Beach, be passed by triumphant sailboats, and greeted by friendly paddle boarders sharing the waterways.

A nearby wildlife refuge promises sightings of several species of wild birds.

If you are lucky, you will witness the return of the moon jellies! Then, enjoy a delightful afternoon on your own at the beach. Bring a picnic or walk into town to explore your various restaurant options. With your toes in the sand, this day will have plenty of excitement!! Fee includes: transportation on luxury liner coach, bus driver gratuity, instruction, instructor gratuity, supervision, kayaks and all the necessary equipment, and tour. Meet at the Senior Citizen/Community Center parking lot located at 201 E. Bonita Avenue, San Dimas. *Children must be at least 10 years of age and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Excursion Policies & Guidelines Refund Policy for All Excursions: Refunds must be requested seven "business days" prior to day trips and 30 days prior to overnight trips. No refunds issued after that time. There is a $5 service charge for cancellation of each seat. Full refunds will be issued if the Department cancels a trip.

Parent/guardian signature is required on all permission slips for participants under 18 years.

Individuals, who are not at boarding locations at specified times, upon departure, return or during the excursion, shall forfeit the cost of the trip and will be responsible for their own transportation arrangements and all related costs. Contact (909) 394-6290 for a complete Excursion Policy.

Family Excursions: Family Excursions include transportation on a luxury

liner coach. Family Excursions depart from and return to the City Hall parking lot. Children 7 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Family Excursions are supervised by Recreation staff and are conducted using the “buddy system” so children may sign up with a friend or with the family.

Participants must travel on City provided transportation to and from the event.

Adult Excursions: Adult Excursions include transportation on a luxury liner coach. Adult Excursions depart from and return to the west side of the CVS Pharmacy parking lot unless otherwise noted. 1. Students must pre-register for all classes. Registrations will not be accepted by instructors.

2. Register early! Classes may be canceled if minimum registrations are not met by the first class meeting.

3. Refunds will only be issued prior to the first class meeting, with a $5 service charge for each class refund issued. On-line convenience fees are nonrefundable.

4. Small children may not remain in adult classes during instruction periods. Parents of children in the Performing Arts classes will be allowed to observe only the first and last classes of the session.
