Pre-registration is recommended for all classes and programs. Classes and Programs may have enrollment limits; space may or may not be available on first class date.

Registrations for the following classes and programs begin Monday, March 12, and will be accepted exclusively at the Harold E. Hofmann Community Center, second floor reception office. Walk-in program registration hours and acceptable forms of payment are as follows: Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Cash, personal checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, credit and debit cards. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express accepted.

Monday – Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Credit and debit cards only. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express accepted.

Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Credit and debit cards only. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express accepted.

Lawndale Votes in 2018!

City Elections Coming in November!

Since incorporating as a city in December 1959, the City of Lawndale has held its elections in April of even-numbered years.

The election was only for the mayor, councilmembers, city clerk and city ballot measures – no other elective offices, no county measures or state propositions. But state laws were changed and the city must now hold its election in November. As a result there will be no city election in April this year. For further information, the public is welcome to call the City Clerk Department at (310) 973-3211.

Wall of Distinction Nominations Taking Place this Spring Recently, the City Council inducted two deserving individuals to the Wall of Distinction, Lertis R. Ellett and Ella E. Traver.

Lertis R. Ellett was a long time Lawndale minister and chaplain. In addition, he was United States Air Force Colonel and Air Force Reserve Officer.

Ella E. Traver was Lawndale Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) president.

As well Ms. Traver was a long-time Woman's Club member, Woman of the Year and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

The Wall of Distinction program posthumously honors up to four (4) individuals annually who had distinguished themselves in the city by providing exemplary volunteer service to the City of Lawndale and its residents while a Lawndale resident.

As we move forward with the Wall of Distinction’s third year of existence, the City of Lawndale would like to encourage residents of Lawndale to submit nominations for the Wall of Distinction program beginning Monday, April 2nd, 2018, through Thursday, May 24th, 2018, for potential induction in 2018.

USDA Free Food Program

�unity Bike Ride pen Stre�t Event Join in on the Fun, Coming in April! 2018 Lawndale “Pirate Days” Youth Day Parade

Please join us on Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 a.m. for the annual Lawndale “Pirate Days” Youth Day Parade, a tradition in Lawndale for many decades. The City is searching for enthusiastic groups interested in this fun annual event celebrating the youth of Lawndale and the surrounding communities. Come out and join the fun!

School bands, youth groups, civic groups, sports teams, church groups, classic cars, local businesses and all others are invited to join us!

Registration for the event is easy, and it’s free!

However, move fast the registration deadline is Thursday, March 8th at 5:00 p.m. and is fast approaching! If you have a group that is interested in participating, or know of one, please contact the Lawndale Community Services Department at (310) 973-3270, or email mestes@ lawndalecity.org. Or, visit the City’s website at www.lawndalecity.org, and place your cursor over Government, Departments, mouse click on Community Services and then click on the Youth Day Parade link under the Upcoming Events heading. Applications are available at the Community Services Department and can be accessed from the City website as well.

The City of Lawndale Free Food Program is open to all adults who qualify. The food is provided by the Food Bank of Southern California and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The food bank obtains and distributes donations of nutritious food that the City of Lawndale picks up from the warehouse and packs and distributes weekly. The food received each week varies and oftentimes consists of canned goods and some type of fresh produce.

Food Distribution Information: Food distribution takes place at the Harold E. Hofmann Community Center located at 14700 Burin Avenue at the third floor Main Event Room. Food is distributed every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. on a first come, first served basis to those who qualify until all food is gone.

Lines to obtain food form early. Those obtaining food must provide signature confirming that Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) guidelines are met. For more information, please contact the Community Services Department at (310) 973-3270. ®

On Saturday, April 28 , 2018, prior to the Lawndale Youth Day Parade event, a number of streets will be closed to vehicle traffic; however, will be open to those that would like to get some exercise and use the wide open and safe streets for bicycle riding.

From 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic: Manhattan Beach Boulevard between Prairie Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard; Hawthorne Boulevard between Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Marine Avenue; Marine Avenue between Hawthorne Boulevard and Prairie Avenue and Prairie Avenue between Marine Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard.

Those that choose to participate may enter anywhere along the parade route between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and will be required to abide by all traffic and helmet laws. Parental supervision is recommended for all minors 13 years old and below. th

Public Works Department NEWS The Public Works Department is located at 4722 Manhattan Beach Boulevard and can be reached by calling (310) 973-3260, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Spring Capital Improvements Program Update The Public Works Department is pleased to provide you with this quarterly update of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The program covers street, concrete, and traffic improvements (including sidewalk, curb and gutter), parks, and city facilities improvements. Projects are currently under construction or are in the planning and design phases.

Current Projects Burin House Demolition: The demolition and removal of the City’s residential property located at 14720 Burin Avenue (Burin House) has been longtime programmed in the City’s Capital Improvement Program. The removal was a requirement established during the development of the City’s Community Center. The project includes demolition, constructing a masonry wall around the property perimeter, and to then extend the existing Community Center parking lot in its place. The project is in the design phase and will be funded using Successor Agency bond funding.

W. 145th Street Improvement Project: The project identified in the City’s Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Year 2017/2018 includes W. 145th Street from Condon Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard. On October 16th, 2017, the City Council approved the plans and specifications for the W. 145th Street Improvement Project and authorized staff to solicit bids for the project. The project’s scope of work addresses poor roadway conditions due to extensive alligator cracking and failing base material at several locations. In addition, reconstruction of damaged curb and gutter, sidewalk, driveway approaches, striping, and upgrading of wheelchair ramps to meet ADA standards will be a part of the improvements project. The project is expected to be completed no later than March 2018 and will be funded with Measure R and CDBG (Community Development Block Grants) funds.

Completed Projects General Street Improvements: The following street segments have been completed: W. 149th Street from Firmona Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard W. 153rd Street from Inglewood Avenue to Firmona Avenue W. 153rd Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to terminus W. 164th Street from Inglewood Avenue to Freeman Avenue W. 166th Street from Inglewood Avenue to Prairie Avenue W. 168th Street from Inglewood Avenue to Prairie Avenue W. 170th Street from Inglewood Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard W. 172nd Street from Inglewood Avenue to Hawthorne Boulevard W. 173rd Street from Inglewood Avenue to Grevillea Avenue Larch Avenue from Marine Avenue to Manhattan Beach Boulevard Prairie Avenue from northern city limit to south of W. 149th Street Freeman Avenue from Manhattan Beach Boulevard to W. 165th Street Osage Avenue from Firmona Avenue to W. 167th Street The Street Improvements Project addressed asphalt pavement repairs, restored roadway gutter and drainage flows to eliminate and diminish street and cross-gutter nuisance water. Project repaired damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters, cross-gutters, alley gutters, curb return ramps, driveway approaches and re-establishment of traffic striping, pavement markings and markers and related signage. The project was completed in January.

Inglewood Avenue Widening Project: Phase I and II of the project extends from Manhattan Beach Boulevard to the I-405 Freeway northbound on-ramp, to include the Marine Avenue intersection. The project will include construction of a right turn pocket, pavement resurfacing, crosswalk and traffic signal replacements, utility relocation, curb, gutter, traffic striping and other roadway modifications to complete the traffic improvements within the project limits. Phase III of the project will widen Inglewood Avenue to provide a third southbound traffic lane from south of W. 147th Street to Marine Avenue. The project will also provide a continuous 10-foot wide sidewalk from Lawndale High School to Marine Avenue, a raised and landscaped median island, traffic synchronization, street striping, and other roadway modifications to complete the traffic improvements throughout the project limits. The project is in the design phase and is anticipated to be completed this year. Funding sources include Measure R, Proposition C and other federal funds such as SAFETEA-LU funding.

Bucks for Bulk Program Republic Services sponsors a “Bucks for Bulk” random drawing contest during the City’s Annual Clean-up events each spring and fall. Residents that drop off bulky items at the City Yard are entered into a contest for a chance to win a $250 gift card sponsored by Republic Services.

The contest is advertised on street banners placed on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Jane Addams Park, on the City’s website and on the flyer that is placed on all City public counters.

The contest is intended to attract a higher community participation rate during the City’s annual clean-up week. The annual cleanup week that took place in September drew a total of 101 vehicles that dropped off bulky items and electronic waste to the City’s Public Works Yard. The contest winner for the September clean-up week event was Elizabeth Leighton, whom Republic Services presented with a $250 gift card at the November 6th City Council meeting. Free SHARPS Collection Program

Schedule Your Bulky Item Pickup – It’s Easy!

The City of Lawndale and Republic Services are here to help you dispose of your large and bulky items responsibly. These items can include refrigerators, sofas, mattresses, computers, toilets and many other items.

City of Lawndale single-family residents are offered four bulky item pickups each year. Each pickup can include up to four items.

Single-family residents who exceed four pickups, or place more than four items out per pickup, or do not schedule their pickup in advance with Republic Services, will be charged a fee of $22.22 for each additional item collected. Residents living in multi-family complexes can receive one bulky item pickup per year per unit. Bulky items are limited to items that can be lifted by two men. Call Republic Services customer service at least 24 hours in advance of your regular trash collection day at (800) 299-4898 to schedule your collection.

Too Dangerous to Dump

Republic Services is now offering the residents of Lawndale, at no additional charge, the collection of used SHARPS. Within one week of request, a pre-paid, postage-paid mail-back container to safely collect and send used SHARPS for proper disposal will be delivered to each requestor. Simply call Republic Services at (800) 299-4898 and order your free SHARPS container.

Lawndale Launches Commercial Organics/Food Waste Recycling Program In October of 2014, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 1826 requiring certain businesses and multi-family complexes to recycle their organic waste beginning April 1st, 2016. Organics are defined as food waste, food-soiled paper, landscaping waste, and compostable utensils.

The requirement for businesses to recycle organics/food waste will be phased in starting with the largest generators such as grocery stores, large restaurants, and food processing businesses. Also covered under the bill are multi-family complexes consisting of 5 units or more.

Multi-family complexes are not required to recycle food waste, but are required to recycle organic waste, or green waste such as lawn and garden clippings.

Lawndale has established an organics recycling program that will be available to Lawndale businesses and multi-family complexes that fall under AB 1826 at no additional charge. Businesses will place organics/food waste in specially designed bags and place them in the trash receptacle. Businesses and multi-family complexes can sign up for landscape and/or organics recycling service by contacting Republic Services at (800) 299-4898.

Organic waste accounts for about 40% of the material in landfills that Californians dispose of annually. Most organic waste is recyclable through methods such as composting, mulching, and anaerobic digestion.

Old and dismantled televisions are finding their way into the streets of our city. Illegally dumped and stripped down, these old and dismantled televisions pose a serious threat to families, their children and the environment.

Not only do televisions contain broken glass, choking hazards and sharp wires, they contain many hazardous chemicals that can cause serious injury and illness if directly exposed to or inhaled. Some of these dangerous chemicals are Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Arsenic. Exposure to any of these can cause vomiting, diarrhea, numbness and tingling in extremities and rashes. In severe cases, these chemicals can even cause death. These are only four of the toxic chemicals that are found in old, abandoned televisions that threaten your well-being. If not disposed of properly these old and abandoned televisions can leak dangerous chemicals into our environment through the soil and groundwater.

You can help to combat these threats and keep these chemicals away from our families by properly disposing of old televisions.

Republic Services will collect your television as a bulky item pickup.

Earthquake Preparedness

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind our communities to take steps to ensure you are prepared and ready for earthquakes. The University of Colorado predicted an increase in earthquakes, worldwide, in 2018.

The University conducted a longitudinal study of earthquakes and the earth’s rotation. The researchers found a 25 to 40 percent increase in the number of significant earthquakes associated with a slowdown in the Earth’s rotation over the past 100 years. Approximately five years ago, the earth’s rotation began to slow again. According to the University’s findings, this could bring two to five more magnitude 7 worldwide earthquakes than usual.

Living in earthquake prone territory means we must be prepared. FEMA has published a printable, comprehensive checklist (WWW.FEMA.com, search for: “Earthquake Safety Checklist”). The following is a summary of their recommendations: Document: Write down important information, such as phone numbers and addresses. This should include your children’s schools, your spouse’s place of work, and any other addresses and phone numbers of importance.

Food: Keep non-perishable food on hand, enough to last at least 72 hours, and up to two weeks.

Nonperishable food can include whole grain cereals, salt free crackers, and canned goods with a high liquid content. Remember to store enough for your pets as well.

Bottled Water: Store water in unbreakable plastic bottles. The volume should be enough to offer each person a gallon a day, and whatever your respective pet may need. The water should be changed about every six months.

Keep a stocked first aid kit available.

Get an A/B/C rated fire extinguishers Keep a supply of special needs items, which may include medications, contact lens solutions, hearing aid batteries, etc.

The most important aspect of preparation is to have a plan. Talk to your family, friends, and neighbors.

Establish meeting points, and discuss worst case scenarios. Keep your family as safe as possible with adequate supplies, preparatory information, and planning.

Actualización del Programa de Mejoramientos Importantes de primavera El Departamento de Obras Públicas se complace en dar su reporte trimestral de Mejoramientos Importantes de la Ciudad (CIP). El programa cubre calles, concreto, y mejoramiento del tráfico (incluyendo banquetas y coladeras), mejoramiento de los parques e instalaciones de la ciudad. Los proyectos están ya completados, se encuentran en construcción o en su fase de diseño.

Proyectos Actuales Demolición de la Casa Burin: La demolición y eliminación de la propiedad residencial de la ciudad, ubicada en el 14720 de la Avenida Burin (Casa Burin) se ha programado ya por largo tiempo en el Programa de Mejoramiento Importantes de la Ciudad. La eliminación fue un requisito durante el desarrollo del Centro Comunitario de la ciudad. El proyecto incluye demolición, construyendo una pared de mampostería alrededor del perímetro de la propiedad y entonces extender el estacionamiento del Centro Comunitario en su lugar. El proyecto está en su fase de diseño y será financiado con bonos del fondo de la Agencia de Sucesión.

Proyecto de mejoramientos de la calle W. 145: El Proyecto identificado en el Programa de Mejoramiento Importantes de la Ciudad para el año fiscal 2017/2018 incluye la calle W. 145, desde la avenida Condon hasta el Bulevar Hawthorne. El 16 de octubre de 2017, el Consejo de la Ciudad aprobó los planos y especificaciones del Proyecto de mejoramiento de la calle W. 145 y autorizó al personal a solicitar ofertas para el proyecto. El proyecto aborda las malas condiciones de las carreteras debido al extenso agrietamiento y al material defectuoso en varias ubicaciones. Además parte de los mejoramientos del proyecto es la reconstrucción de las orillas de las banquetas, coladeras, banquetas y accesos viales dañados, trazado de las líneas de la calle, y mejoras a las rampas para las sillas de ruedas para cumplir con las normas de ADA. Se espera que el proyecto se complete a más tardar en marzo del 2018 y será financiado con fondos de la Medida R y CDBG (Community Development Block Grants), fondos del Desarrollo Comunitario.

Programa “Bucks for Bulk” (Dinero por artículo voluminoso) Republic Services patrocina un concurso al azar de “Bucks for Bulk” durante los eventos anuales de limpieza de la ciudad, cada primavera y otoño. Los residentes que entreguen artículos voluminosos en la yarda de la ciudad entran al concurso, para tener la oportunidad de ganarse una tarjeta de regalo de $250 patrocinada por Republic Services. El concurso se anuncia con banderas en el Bulevar Hawthorne, en el parque Jane Addams, en el sitio web de la ciudad y en volantes que se ponen en todos los mostradores de los servicios públicos de la ciudad. Lawndale Lanza el Programa de Reciclaje Comercial de Desecho de Alimentos/Orgánicos En octubre de 2014, el gobernador Brown firmó el Proyecto de Ley 1826 requiriendo que ciertos negocios y complejos multifamiliares reciclen su desecho orgánico comenzando el 1º de abril de 2016. Desecho orgánico se define como desecho de alimentos, papel con restos de alimentos, desecho de jardín y artículos para abono.

El requisito de que los comercios reciclen desechos orgánicos/alimentos comenzará a entrar en vigor comenzando con los generadores más grandes como supermercados, restoranes grandes y comercios que procesan alimentos. También cubierto bajo esta ley, están los complejos multifamiliares que tengan 5 o más unidades. No se requiere que los complejos multifamiliares reciclen desecho de alimentos pero sí se requiere que reciclen desecho orgánico o desecho verde como hojas, pasto, etc.

Lawndale ha establecido un programa de reciclaje de materiales orgánicos que estará disponible para los comercios y complejos multifamiliares de Lawndale que entran en el Proyecto de Ley AB 1826 sin costo adicional. Los comercios pondrán sus desechos de alimentos/ orgánicos en bolsas especialmente diseñadas y los echarán en los botes de basura. La Ciudad de Lawndale y Republic Services están para ayudarlo a deshacerse de sus artículos voluminosos responsablemente. La Universidad de Colorado predice un aumento en terremotos por todo el mundo en el 2018. La universidad lleva a cabo un estudio longitudinal de terremotos y rotación de la Tierra. Los investigadores encontraron un 25 a 40 por ciento del aumento en el número de terremotos importantes asociados con una desaceleración en la rotación de la Tierra en los últimos 100 años. Hace aproximadamente cinco años, la rotación de la Tierra empezó a desacelerarse otra vez. De acuerdo con los hallazgos de la Universidad, esto podría causar dos o más terremotos de lo normal, de más de 7 puntos de magnitud.

Vivir en territorio propenso a terremotos significa que debemos estar preparados. Fema ha publicado una lista de verificación detallada e imprimible (WWW.FEMA.com, busque: “Earthquake Safety Checklist”). A continuación tenemos un resumen de sus recomendaciones:
