This autumn, I invite you to travel the world through music.

Leading jazz ensemble Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis returns to QPAC for two spectacular concerts.

Led by nine-time Grammy Award winner Wynton Marsalis, this is a big band made up of 15 of the finest jazz musicians playing today.

A night not to be missed for fans of jazz legends including Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Internationally renowned vocal ensemble The Sixteen also return to QPAC with a program including Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Thomas Morley. There is something spectacular in how The Sixteen come together and create moments of such incredible beauty.

The Times in the UK said they are “a tiny soundbite of heaven”.

Also in March, the outstanding virtuoso collective Silkroad Ensemble makes its Queensland debut with a one-night only concert at QPAC. Founded by Yo-Yo Ma, Silkroad Ensemble brings together contemporary musicians representing dozens of nationalities and instrumental disciplines. Inspired by the historic Silk Road connecting East and West, each concert is unique – a snapshot in time… like troubadours at a crossroads, the musicians who gather on stage are fleetingly together before continuing their journeys.

As the death rattle of American optimism echoes through the land of the Free Market, travelling salesman Willy Loman loses himself in the halcyon haze of the past.

Once the king of the road, Willy is veering off it.

Time was, he could sell anyone anything, and his reward was the whole package: wife, two sons, the car, the white picket fence. But now he’s feeling his years. He’s behind on the mortgage, he’s sidelined by his wet-behind-the-ears boss, and the final straw is when his adult son Biff – once a sporting prodigy, now a directionless disappointment – lands on the doorstep, further loosening Willy’s grip on the reality of his broken-down life.

Arthur Miller’s towering classic is a timeless meditation on the human need to feel special, a withering commentary on capitalism, and a tragic portrait of a fallout between father and son.

By creating orchestral spin-offs of folk music, composers could pay homage to their homeland while also creating spectacular new sounds. There will be plenty of

BEETHOVEN & PROKOFIEV 11 March | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval) Fiery and charismatic Italian violinist Lorenza Borrani, who delighted audiences on her last tour here in 2016, returns to lead a program of emotioncharged music.

Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No.1 is a dark and brooding masterpiece written during World War II. Prokofiev said to the pianist he was coaching for its premiere: “It should sound in such a way that people should jump in their seat, and people will say ‘Is he out of his mind?’” Written for violin and piano, it has been arranged for violin and strings by Borrani herself.

Alongside Prokofiev’s sonata is an arrangement of Beethoven’s last String Quartet, Op.135, written only a few months before his death. Its transitions from joy to vulnerability to melancholy – sometimes within a single movement – are immensely moving and thought-provoking.

In between these powerful works, Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova’s Such Different Paths offers a radiant interlude evoking life’s journey.

SONGS OF HOPE AND HEALING WITH VIKA AND LINDA 18 March | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval) Join Australian music royalty, the award winning Vika and Linda Bull – together with a cast of over 200 singers and musicians – in this uplifting concert inspired by music, cultures and faiths from around the world, presented in the lead up to Easter.

Vika and Linda, the Tongan-Australian sisters known for their gospel, soul and blues, are also celebrated for their iconic collaborations with Paul Kelly, The Black Sorrows, Kasey Chambers and RockWiz. They will join QPAC’s newest ensemble in residence JADE New World Collective, the gypsy-folk band

Coral reefs contribute considerably to Earth’s biodiversity, harbouring 25 per cent of all marine life. Beyond their breathtaking natural beauty, reefs also maintain ocean health and protect the shore from the sea.

From the bubonic plague to malaria and swine flu, infectious diseases that spread through communities and across borders have significantly shaped human history. Today, a new strain of influenza could spread even more rapidly than in 1918 when millions died worldwide. Alarmingly, despite modern medical and communication advances, disease epidemics and pandemics can still wreak havoc as a global public health issue in both scale and impact.

Australia’s own jewelled wonder, the Great Barrier Reef is an integral part of the global reef system, contributing over 6 billion dollars annually to the economy and is deeply embedded in the Australian psyche. Korean pianist Yiruma comes back to Brisbane with his new album Frame and classic original pieces.

His two successful sold out Australian concert tours in 2016 and 2017 conveyed a soft and mellow musical style and gained many audiences’ enthusiastic responses in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Branford Marsalis is an artist deeply aligned with the ACO spirit. He hails from a rich jazz heritage, but is also an artist of today, renowned for his thrilling virtuosity and boundless musicality. His ACO debut is a vivid program inspired by Latin American jazz, directed by ACO’s Principal Violin Satu Vänskä.

Ever since the first album, Love Scene, Yiruma's warm and lyrical classical melody resonates with music lovers all around the world. Kiss the Rain, River Flows in You and Yiruma’s many other popular pieces showcase he is not a traditional pianist by any means, but an artist with the ambition to use his music to heal and remind his audiences of love and hope.

Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Fantasia for Saxophone and Orchestra is a Marsalis favourite.

Written in New York, it is music with an alluring combination of driving beats and lyricism. Marsalis also plays Sally Beamish’s serene Under the Wing of the Rock, arranged especially for him by Beamish, in a bluesy translation for saxophone.

ENGLISH BAROQUE WITH CIRCA 21 May | Concert Hall 1 hour and 30 mins (no interval) The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s first collaboration with Circa French Baroque in 2015 won a Helpmann Award. In 2017 Spanish Baroque was a sold out sensation.

In 2019 English Baroque with Circa becomes the third daring collaboration between the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Circa.
