The Race For The Chinese Zodiac Thirteen animals line up along the shore. But there are only twelve places to be won. Who will miss out? One of China’s favourite fables is brought to life through an intercultural arts experience for inquisitive young minds.

Follow the story of the Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven and earth, who has proclaimed a great race: the first twelve animals to cross the river will win their place on the Chinese Zodiac. Find out who wins, who misses out and which

animal of the Chinese Zodiac you are.

Gabrielle Wang’s picture book is transformed into a multifaceted theatre production incorporating animation, storytelling and an original Chinese score played on traditional Chinese instruments and performed live by the Australian Chinese Music Ensemble.

Shadows are mysterious and magical and can do amazing things.

But making friends with your shadow can be a tricky business. There are things to sort out, negotiations to be made, frustrations to be overcome, problems to solve, adventures to be had and laughter to be shared.

Me and My Shadow is a gentle story depicting the fanciful escapades of a girl who finds a way to be friends with her shadow told using the languages of paper, light, shadow, colour, water, music, sound and words.

With fantastical imagery, quirky physical performances and an intriguing score, Me and My Shadow ignites the imagination and explores the frustrations and joys of friendship.

Stradbroke Dreamtime “He was a beauty, that ten-foot carpet snake we had as a pet. My father belonged to the Nunukul tribe of Stradbroke Island, and the carpet snake was his totem.” From Stradbroke Dreamtime This is a tale of a place not far from home that takes audiences to the oldest living culture on earth. This performance is an adaptation of celebrated poet, author and artist Oodgeroo of the tribe Noonuccal’s book, Stradbroke Dreamtime.

In this newly created work from QPAC and Queensland Theatre Company, Oodgeroo’s stories come to life on stage helping young audiences to share in her tales of growing up on Stradbroke Island.

Join in a dance telling a Dreamtime story and listen to songs that tell of the water, the land and the people of the island.

Get up close and personal with prehistoric creatures that once roamed free across the ancient lands of Terra Australis. Come eye to eye with an amazing array of mostly friendly (!), lifelike creatures from cute baby dinosaurs to the teeth-gnashing ferocity of the Australovenator. Feed, pet and interact with them in a once-in-a-lifetime imaginative experience.

Erth’s awesome menagerie of insects, mammals and dinosaurs will come to life on the Melbourne Street Green in a unique, fun and educational performance that will thrill and delight children of all ages.

We Built This City invites everyone to release their inner architectural, design and construction skills to build tunnels and construct towers using not one, but thousands of boxes! Be part of the fun as buildings go up, are pulled down, redesigned, extended, walked through and reconstructed.

We Built This City has delighted children everywhere from Washington to London to Korea and Japan. Amongst the typical mayhem, Polyglot’s performers will rove the site in the roles of construction workers, setting tasks and becoming characters who help bring an essence of community spirit into play. Invisible Me Are you black with white stripes? Or white with black stripes?

Invisible Me follows the adventures of Stripey, a baby Emu, as he searches for his place in the vast Australian bush. Based on Wendy Binks’s awardwinning and popular story book, renowned chamber ensemble Southern Cross Soloists blend a unique combination of narration, music and dance.

With an original score by Joseph Twist and the extraordinary skills of actress/dancer Stacey McCallum, the performance becomes an interactive exploration of a land filled with strange and wonderful animals.

A POLYGLOT THEATRE PRODUCTION

Be part of creating Sticky Maze, a free interactive play space where simple and everyday materials are used to transform public space into a labyrinth of adventure.

It’s beautiful and unusual to look at as well as fun to play in, through and around.

Facilitated by Polyglot’s performers, children are invited to continue the story of ‘I went to Out of the Box and I…’ by adding drawings, stories and oodles of newspaper to help in the creation of the maze.

Gradually the walls become filled in, creating the ultimate bewildering maze.

Inside the Sticky Maze are Polyglot’s performers who play tricksters: taking people the wrong way, hiding within the walls of paper, talking in gibberish and giving children tasks that take them on different paths through the maze.

This ground-breaking and beautiful production explores the moment by moment fascination of being a baby. Developed through extensive research into ways in which babies and their adults tune into one another, this gentle piece is presented especially for babies and parents. At times, the performance becomes a special space where babies and performers together create something spontaneous and uniquely original. As they observe each other dancing, creating sounds and images together, the babies become comfortable and are encouraged to voyage bravely out to meet the performers with their own sounds and movements.

Lack of physical exercise for a baby has the same effects as for an adult, resulting in poor digestion, emotional agitation and poor circulation. Baby Yoga offers a special yogababy sequence of movements that assist with babies’ postural development from lying to walking. After the yogababy sequence, there is time for parent yoga these postures are specifically designed to help new mums regain physical strength and tone in a safe and effective way. During the session you will be offered the choice to involve your baby in the yoga postures or have him or her close by.

Fly Away Home Leading contemporary Australian artist Fiona Hall makes extraordinary things from everyday materials. The interactive installation “Fly Away Home”, commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, explores the artist’s interest in the connections between migratory patterns of birds and people. Young visitors and their families are invited to create their own bird species using templates and paper money, created by Fiona Hall, within a specially designed nest-inspired environment.

My Terrific Hieroglyphic Does your name tell a story? Using storytelling, children will discover some of the different symbols, marks and pictures people from around the world use to tell stories, both from the past and the present. Children will be introduced to Egyptian hieroglyphic picture writing and will match pictures to letters in an interactive game.

Using everyday images to make our own picture writing, children will create their name in picture letters as wearable art. Children will also use their picture name to make up a funny story.

Story Dramas This workshop asks children to contemplate important questions posed by a classic picture book.

Story Dramas encourage children to enter into the life of a book and become characters of the story, props and sometimes even to become parts of the landscape. Led by QUT Senior Drama Lecturer and respected theatre director Sean Mee and KITE Teacher Artist Adrianne Jones. Children enter two different environments to play, create and take on roles as they explore the story.

Scary Beast Do you have monsters under your bed? This is your chance to create your own imaginative story about a ‘scary beast’ using role play and bluescreen technology. Presented by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) this practical workshop is inspired by the ‘Yamuti’ featured in the Indigenous animation Wadu Matyidi, and provides an opportunity for children to develop their own imaginative ‘scary beast’ story for show and tell. The participants are given the opportunity to demonstrate their story in a studio setting with a multimedia artist.

Dream Weavers This ’join-in performance’ follows Ashleigh & Darcy and their brave friends as they drift into their dream world of stories and adventures. Travel with them through space, over oceans, fighting with pirates, through jungles with bands of marauding monkeys and dancing with monsters. Children in the audience will ‘dream weave’ Ashleigh’s, Darcy’s and their friends adventures as they determine what happens next in a 20 minute performance. The performance is followed by a 25 minute workshop where the children create their own dream dance.

Design Your Story World Have you ever imagined being able to walk around the illustrations in a picture book? What might buildings feel or look like? How big is everything? The Art, the Heart and the Soul of Food Join executive chefs Rhett Willis of Jellyfish and Tony Percuoco of Tartufo along with Junior MasterChefs Isabella and Sofia as they work with children to explore the origins and delights of food and cooking. Children will learn about aquaculture and delight in getting up-close and personal with some very big sea creatures! They will be introduced to the secrets of traditional Italian cooking and will observe the masterful creation of Japanese delicacies.

Designed by leading Brisbane chefs to foster a curiosity and healthy appetite for food, this program will delight kids in the excitement of the art, the heart and the soul of food.

OUT OF THE BOX IN ASSOCIATION WITH STATE LIBRARY OF QUEENSLAND PRESENTS 2012 OUT OF THE BOX SYMPOSIUM

This Festival symposium presents opportunities to discuss, debate and celebrate new ways to think about why and how children’s self-development can be supported in and through arts practice.

Connecting the Dots ... is an interdisciplinary symposium, supporting adults to support children. There are three opportunities to engage: • A special Teacher Taster for teachers who want hands on ‘connection’ with festival artists and thinkers.

• A special invitation for parents to attend a presentation as part of the Teacher Taster by parenting expert and author Dr Tina Payne Bryson who will provide practical advice to help parents better understand their kids and themselves.

• An Industry Forum for anyone who values arts education in their professional life.

The symposium presents a curated program of performances and national and international keynote speakers.

The Under Age Stage The Under Age Stage in the Cascade Court will be packed full of performances for our young audiences. Featuring an exciting mix of music, dance and theatre by kids for kids, this free program will run throughout the festival.

The Under Age Stage will also be a wonderful opportunity for kids of all ages to participate in the activities and performances.

Chalk the Walk Children are invited to share their experience of the festival through pictures and words directly onto the walls of the QPAC Tunnel!

Running through the heart of QPAC, the pedestrian tunnel will become a giant chalk board and gallery. Blackboard balloons will fill the walls, providing a perfect canvas for creative young artists to share the magical moments of their day.

Drawing tables and a gallery wall will offer an alternative space for budding visual artists. Parents and carers can join in or sit back with a coffee and watch proceedings from the adjoining lounge.
