Synopsis A comedy that asks if good intentions are the ultimate crime of the middle class It’s a dream holiday for Aussie couple Meg and Rooster – a decadent getaway in Paris in a swanky Airbnb, with fine wine, lavish food, and best of all, no three year old twins in tow – a chance for these parents to look after themselves, kick back and reconnect.

But when they pick up the keys from their departing hosts – an achingly cool, overachieving young French couple – all it takes is 15 minutes for the trip to be derailed.

And when they crack open a mysterious package that arrives on the doorstep, it throws up the biggest ethical dilemma they’ve ever faced.

Razor-sharp and whip-smart, this edgy new comedy marks the directorial debut of one Australia’s most accomplished storytellers, Joanna Murray-Smith.

Queensland Theatre has a long history of staging the plays of Joanna Murray-Smith, starting with Love Child back in 1996.

Over the next two decades, we have presented and produced plays that have become household names - Honour, The Female of the Species, Ninety, Bombshells, Switzerland and most recently, the 2017 adaptation of Scenes From a Marriage. The world premiere of L’Appartement, a Queensland Theatre commission, marks the latest instalment in the love affair between our audiences and Joanna Murray-Smith.

L’Appartement shares many affinities with Joanna’s other plays. Once again, audiences are able to savour: an ability to flip seamlessly from the personal and domestic to the global and ethical; rapier sharp dialogue that is also effortlessly natural; an unflinching honesty in the treatment of long-term relationships; and a deft balance between darkness and light, comedy and tragedy.

But if there are similarities between Joanna’s earlier plays and this one, there is also a key difference. This time, for the first time, Joanna has assumed the reins and is also directing her play. We thank Joanna for her courage in stepping out from behind the blinking cursor, and we thank her for a result that is every bit as special as we all knew it would be. Joanna’s directorial debut is a bit like watching an incredible rugby player play out of position. They are every bit as good as you’ll think they will be, but there are a few lovely surprises as well.

The gratitude I had felt when he first proposed I extend my creation of a theatrical universe by directing as well as writing it into existence, had evaporated. As a writer, I tell people to make things happen and it’s their problem to float the words from the page and give them three dimensional conviction.

Suddenly, I had to do that as well – when the writer’s anxiety of whether or not the play is good is also reaching its crescendo.

As both writer and director, you are at the mercy of your casting – as well as your designers and stage manager. The absolute joy of this experience was delivered to me through the nerve endings, imaginations, skills, enthusiasms and kindness of my collaborators.

They helped me fly, but were there to catch me if I plummeted to earth. I am indebted to them all for not just delivering me the world’s first best directing experience, but changing me as an artist and giving me a wider vision.

A writer’s greatest wish is that the first incarnation of the play will be vivid and coherent and alive because it becomes the architecture for the rest of its life. I’m so grateful to these remarkably agile actors, who dance so perilously and perfectly between comedy and tragedy, and have given me that architecture for L’Appartement. Designers Ben, Guy and Dale (one of my long-time favourite collaborators) contributed hugely to this production, not just in their own domains, but also in mine, always offering thoughtful suggestions. And Stage Manager, Pete Sutherland, was a masterful mind and generous guide – I’m in awe of his skills.

And against all predictions, I finally have to thank Sam and Amanda, for having the faith I could do it, along with Sophia and all the Queensland Theatre staff who never showed their doubts and fears even when they felt them! And as Stephen Sondheim eloquently said – the audience is our ultimate collaborator – so thank you to you, for taking a risk on a new Australian work and teaching us all where we succeed and where we fail, which makes us all better artists. It’s wonderful to be back at Queensland Theatre again.
