HISTORY

Thought to be Boonah’s oldest pub building in some circles, the heritage of the Dugandan Hotel dates back to the 1880s when the building was first established by Carl Stumer. The Dugandan did not actually become a hotel until 1913 however, trading as a general store for its first few decades.

The original hotel design included accommodation, a cellar, water tanks to ensure cool liquor as well as a kitchen and servants’ rooms.

Over the years the Dugie has survived natural disasters including the 2011 floods, as well as undergoing renovations including a new deck and beer garden called ‘The Chook Yard’.

Throughout it all the Dugie retains its traditional country pub charm and continues to entertain locals and visitors to the area, hopefully for another century to come!

EMBRACING THE IMPERFECT THE PICKLING PROJECT

In a world where food waste continues to be a pressing issue, one passionate advocate is taking a stand by turning imperfect fruits and vegetables into jars of deliciousness. Sally J Peach, with a background in organic farming and a love for sustainable eating, is leading the charge in the fight against food waste through her innovative initiative, The Pickling Project.

Sally J Peach is not your typical food entrepreneur. With a deep-seated passion for sustainable growing and healthy eating of fresh, local produce, she has turned her love for fruits and vegetables into a remarkable endeavour. Her journey began in local farmers' markets, where

she connected with people who shared her enthusiasm for organic, locally-sourced food. Over the years, she has become a driving force behind Pots of Produce, a grassroots initiative aimed at making beautiful and sustainable food accessible to the people of the Scenic Rim and beyond.

At the heart of The Pickling Project lies a simple yet powerful concept: embracing imperfection to combat food waste. The initiative, which was born in the Scenic Rim, is a celebration of the beauty found in the wonkiest and most imperfect fruits and vegetables that might otherwise go to waste. These often-overlooked gems, deemed unfit for supermarket shelves, possess the same taste and flavour as their more visually appealing counterparts. Sally and her team understand that it's what's on the inside that counts, and they're committed to turning these gems into bottles of pure deliciousness that can be savoured today or months down the line when the seasons change.

The Pickling Project offers an array of delectable products, each crafted to perfection with the love and dedication of a team. From chutneys to sauces, relishes to pestos, mustards to krauts, their product lineup is as diverse as the seasons themselves. What sets them apart is their commitment to seasonal inspiration, which means that their offerings are ever-evolving, guided by the availability of local produce. This not only ensures a fresh and unique experience for their customers but also helps reduce food waste by utilising the bounty of each season to its fullest.
