FORMER NURSES GIVE NEW LIFE TO THE ROYAL HOTEL

Jayd Moore and Cath Bates are bringing new life to The Royal Hotel Harrisville. These two former nurses are giving this historical pub a revamp and a fresh perspective.

Nestled in the heart of the Scenic Rim, is The Royal Hotel Harrisville, one of Australia’s most historical venues that date back to the 19th century. Originally established in 1875, as the Harrisville Inn by Margaret Wholey Dunn, who was one of Australia’s first female licensees. The original hotel serviced the local cotton and

beef industries and was one of the earliest hotels in the region before later burning down in 1916 and was later rebuilt in 1920.

Partners for 12 years, Jayd and Cath first met when working as nurses at Logan Hospital. Throughout their 20 and 30 years respectively nursing careers, Jayd and Cath have faced many challenges, none more so than the Covid pandemic.

“We were both working at the Gold Coast University Hospital at the time and felt it (the pandemic) was our challenge to take on as health care pro

fessionals. We had to stay and help. However, after the pandemic we decided it was time for a new adventure,” explained Jayd.

Over the years, the couple had been on the lookout for rural properties.

“Both Cath and I have a love of the country. Cath is originally from Victoria and I was born in Beaudesert, however, I moved around a lot growing up. My old man worked with cattle and would travel around to all the stations in Queensland,” explained Jayd. “I would take every opportunity to escape living in the city. Often taking short-term contracts to work in hospitals in rural areas like Mount Isa.”

As luck would have it, last year when Jayd’s Great Uncle's property, the Royal Hotel Harrisville got too much for him to handle due to health reasons, they were offered the chance to buy it from him.

There are very few pubs left where people can have a hearty country meal by the wood stove in the restaurant on a chilly winter’s evening, or sit out on the veranda and overlook the town or country side with a cool breeze in summer

Upon seeing the property for the first time, the couple fell in love.

“We fell in love with the property when they first laid eyes on The Royal Hotel Harrisville. It felt like home and we were excited about the po tential we saw in it” stated Jayd, “We instantly knew this is where we were meant to be and decided to buy it.”

Since purchasing the hotel last year, the pair have been working hard to have this muchloved family pub reach new heights, producing great products and delicious quality pub meals.

“With the help of our excellent chef, we are preparing a new menu to launch in the coming months – showcasing local produce and our new signature dishes” shared Jayd.

“We have also brought back the Sunday Sess with live music every Sunday for people to enjoy whilst they have a delicious meal with friends and family. The music is on from 12-3 pm. Some of the upcoming musicians performing in October include Caleb Caswell and Daniel Sprule.”

So, why not stop by The Royal Hotel Harrisville this weekend - the perfect destination for your next weekend adventure. To stay up to date on the latest news, events and deals happening at The Royal Hotel Harrisville, check out their Facebook page, @TheRoyalHotelHarrisville.

HARRISVILLE

A day in the country without the cowpats. Have you ever been gobsmacked when you've driven into an unfamiliar town and found its charm totally engaging?

Harrisville is an old-fashioned picturesque country town less than an hour drive from Brisbane, an hour from the Gold Coast, making it on the fringe of Ipswich.

Named after the Harris brothers, John (1819–1895) and George (1831–1891), who established a store and cotton ginnery in the area at the time when the American Civil War had created a worldwide shortage of cotton.

Enjoy your day out and let us know what you think about Harrisville. We would love to hear if you found any other interesting places to visit in Harrisville.

Harrisville Memorial Park & Gates

The Memorial Park and gates were originally erected to commemorate those from the district who died in service or were killed in action during World War One.

Plaques have been added on either side of the entrance gates listing the names of those from the district who served in both World Wars, including service women.

In June 1922, the Harrisville District Welfare Committee and Returned Soldiers League amalgamated and pooled their funds amounting to £200 for the purpose of erecting a suitable war memorial for the shire. A property in the heart of town was purchased for the purpose of a park. The committee hoped to raise £1000 and make the memorial park not unworthy of the shire's 23 fallen heroes in the Great War.
