Scenic Rim Eat Local Month is the famous flavour celebration that will take place ALL JUNE this year – it was a week, but there was just too much flavour and food to experience, so now it’s a full month!! YUM!!!

It’s the perfect time and place to educate kids about where their food comes from – no, milk

does not come from a carton, nor does corn come from a packet. It’s a cow and a cob respectively!

There are 139 events at Eat Local Month this year, with plenty specifically for kids and families… you can learn how mushrooms grow, and how to cook them; cuddle a camel at Summer Land Camels at the Little Farmer Humpty Day

(and don’t forget to dress like a farmer); and take the family veggie picking at Valley Pride and Kalfresh Vegetables. You can also meet Towri Sheep Cheeses’ famous Hercules the racing sheep, and taste amazing cheese and honey at their Open Farm and a whole lot more.

Then, cap off the month by eating your way around the Winter Harvest Festival, Eat Local Month’s signature family event. It’s the Scenic Rim celebrated in one glorious, flavour-filled day, and everyone is invited! Meet Scenic Rim Food Ambassador Chefs, growers, producers and flavour-makers, take part in masterclasses and demonstrations, there’s produce stalls to wander and tasting stations to graze, and LOADS for kids to take part in!

AND …. THEN THERE’S THE WORLD FAMOUS TRACTOR PULL!!!!

This legendary event at the Winter Harvest Festival sees teams of people pull a tractor –yep, a real tractor – and whoever moves it the furthest wins! The reigning and long-time champions are the local butchers – can they retain the title? Will the Kalfresh Carrot Team rise up?

Is there a mystery team secretly training right now, ready to create a new record?? Only time will tell – but you have to be there!

SO, let’s talk TRACTORS!

• Tractors that pull the carrot harvest trailer in the paddock are a John Deere 8370

• Tractors that pull the actual carrot harvester are a John Deere 7270R

• Tractors that do the groundwork are a John Deere 8RX 370

• Tractors that do the planting are a John Deere 610M

• The Anchor Tractor is an older style tractor used to anchor winch irrigators, a reliable workhorse!

BEECHMONT

Beechmont was originally occupied and run by the Yugambeh people. In the 1800s, early settlers congregated in the area. They began using white beech trees –which at the time were prolific in the area – for timber. These trees are how the area got its name. Farm settlements and sawmills began propping up around 1882. Citrus orcharding also began in the area around a decade later in the 1890s.

From 1904, Beechmont became home to many dairy farms. The same year Beechmont’s first school was opened in a barn. It wasn’t until 4 years later that a building for the students was built. Another school was constructed in 1922. The same year saw telephone connection to the area.

Post World War I, soldier settlers relocated to Lower Beechmont. At this time, roads became the pressing issue. Sawlogs and dairy produce needed to be delivered, and the roads to Narang and Canungra were not in great shape. So, from 1923 improvements were implemented to Canungra Road.

A population surge

Once the ability to commute to Beechmont heightened, so too did its prosperity. Several farm lots were sold in 1925, a local hall was erected in 1926, and an arts school was founded in 1927. This new school was rebuilt early in the 1930s, and the arts school was extended. During the same decade, a church opened its doors in the area, and tourism became more

significant. Once the road developments were almost done, the Groom Family opened Binna Burra to the south. Beechmont welcomed the Ben Vue guest house, including a motor garage and a store.

After World War II, the local dairy industry flourished. The war had hugely increased demand for milk, as the American troops stationed on the south coast required supplies. The population surge postwar ensured the demand would be maintained.

In 1947, Carlie and Alf Freeman opened the Beechmont Timber mill. This mill became an important source of milled timber for both the Gold Coast and Beechmont in the building boom after WWII.

In 1961 an electricity network was connected.

The closeness of coastal markets and increased road connectivity lead to the closing of some local amenities, including the Lower Beechmont School. However, the population continued to grow and so in 1998 the school was resurrected to house over 200 students.

The beautiful Beechmont view. A beautiful, cultural hub and scenic attraction Many artists, including painters and potters,

have taken up residence in Beechmont. Today, a flurry of cafes cater to the many tourists who visit the area for its breathtaking views and scenery. The town is home to several heritage listed sites. Binna Burra Mountain Lodge is one of them. The quaint accommodation was opened in 1933 by Romeo Lahey and Arthur Groom, on the site of George Rankin’s old dairy farm. The pair were responsible for the very first Australian National Parks Association, and Binna Burra Lodge was built as a means to encourage people to experience and look after Australia’s natural wonders. They originally paid just £1 for three months for the lot, before acquiring it completely.
