irtuous’ seems to be the key word as we greet & welcome November 2022!
There has been much heated discussion stemming from our representative sportsman & woman calling out what is right and wrong with regards to environment, racism and whatever else, you name it! Living in the city of Logan, indeed in Australia, means living in harmony! It means getting along with others, encouraging and forging ahead in creating balanced views by accepting others as they are. We all have opinions and sure we are entitled to voice what we believe in. Is it so difficult however, to make your views known in a more considered way, respecting our fellow citizens living and making this country great? How about the inconsistencies we so obviously displayed by a leader voice about ditching an energy company sponsorship, yet still use equipments made of processed materials most harmful to our environment? Closer to home front in Logan City, reading the social media response by local restaurant owner to a caller who claimed; ‘pack your bags and go back to where you came from’ was truly plausible. His courage, confidence and sense of community was outstanding. We will certainly be supporting the restaurant by frequent visits!

A DREAM
COME TRUE Local retired educator fulfils life long dream By Hazel Hillier, Retired Teacher
E
arlier this year, I went to a free concert at the Brisbane City Hall of Star Wars music, played by the army band. At the Springwood bus station, I ran into a friend, who was attending the same concert, so we travelled in and sat together. He asked me had I ever played the organ there (I play the organ at our church.) I replied that I hadn’t but would love to have the opportunity. So the next day, my friend rang the City Hall people and asked would it be possible for me to play it one day. Although they regularly have concerts there, they had never had a request from an individual to “have a go” so the request went up the chain till someone said “Yes, I could come in on a particular date and play for an hour at 10.00 a.m.”
In we went, me with a satchel of music, but wondering whether I would have enough to play for an hour. (I played for 1 ¼ hours.) One of my sons, who is a consultant for various councils, including the BCC, was there at work that day, and came in to listen, as did a couple of friends. As I played, people, including another son who works in the city, came onto the balcony to listen.
“
This experience was one of the highlights of my life. It is such a magnificent instrument, and I had a wonderful time.
”
This has led to another, unexpected outcome. My son has organised for a free family concert to be held at the Brisbane City Hall on 19 November at 10.30 a.m. It won’t be just organists, but will include the Brisbane Pipe Band, a ladies’ choir, various soloists and others. It is a community event, sponsored by the BCC and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but is not a religious concert. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner told my son he was happy I had fulfilled a life-long dream.
SPRINGWOOD S
pringwood is situated in the Yugarabul traditional Aboriginal country of Brisbane and surrounding regions. Indigenous Australian people from the Yugambeh and Jaggera language groups inhabited the local area. The current suburb of Springwood lies to the south of Springwood Road, on land originally owned by W Robinson and Robert Grieve. The area was scrub, with wild brumbies and plenty of wildlife and had a spring in the middle, hence the name Springwood. In 1955, Springwood Road was named, with the name suggested by W F Roche. Until then it was known as Priest Gully Road, which created confusion between it and Priestdale Road. In 1965, when the Brisbane Transportation Study was released, numerous freeways were proposed, including one to link Brisbane with the Pacific Highway at Eight Mile Plains. The projected date of completion was 1970. The Springwood area was planned as a satellite development to be located at the end of the South East Freeway. The first phase of the freeway development began in November 1968 and Freeway
8 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
construction proceeded more slowly than originally predicted. The first phase, which included Captain Cook Bridge (Gardens Point) was not completed until 1970. In 1972, the name Springwood was announced by the placenames board. The final section of the freeway between Logan Road and Springwood Road was constructed between 1982 and 1985, almost 20 years after the first land sales in the area. Springwood is an established residential area, with three primary schools, one high school and two major shopping centres. Arndale Shopping Centre and the Springwood Hotel opened in 1974, with Springwood Mall being completed in 1986. The first Springwood Post Office was opened in January 1985, with the area previously serviced by the Woodridge Post Office. Today, Springwood is a tight-knit, active community and is home to 9,148 people (according to the 2016 Census). Here is a selection of iconic local businesses that make up the Springwood community.
Elements Retirement Living at Springwood The Elements story began in 2003 when founder, Chiou See Anderson secured a block in the Daisy Hill Koala habitat with a vision of building a retirement village that is a community within a community. It was painstakingly planned and designed to promote resident well-being in five key areas; physical, spiritual, social, psychological and financial. In 2021 with Elements at Springwood sold out, Chiou See acquired a 45-apartment vertical village in the heart of Carindale. Situated less than 1km away from the Westfield shopping centre, the residents of Elements at Con Noi Carindale now experience the unique and boutique lifestyle of living in an Elements retirement village. have just spent a fabulous 3 nights onboard P&O’s ‘Pacific Encounter’ and what fun we had. I have made it my mission to experience each of the ships homeporting from Brisbane to ensure I have the very best knowledge to share with you all – you’re welcome! This time I shared the experience with my family – my husband Adam, Nate – 7 years and Emmy – 3 years and my colleague (and friend) Rechelle and her two children Isabella and Billy.
Cruise Terminal and saw the Encounter there in all her glory! She’s quite a masterpiece to look at as you will see from my photos. Again, the check in process was quick and easy and we were onboard in no time (we were the only ones in the terminal at this point!).
Friday, 21st October – Embarkation Day! Oh the excitement! We chose a later embarkation time to ensure we were able to get the most out of our working day and probably left it a little too late! Yes, we were THAT family rushing to make it there in time. The rain was pouring but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits as we arrived at the Brisbane International

Once onboard we made our way to our Balcony Cabin on Deck 12 at the AFT of the ship. I’ve previously not recommended cabins on the higher decks and under any public areas, but we were underneath ‘The Pantry’ and we didn’t have one issue with noise - I was quite impressed. The room was made up of 2 bunks which really made the room appear quite small. The beds, however, are quite comfortable. As the kids are quite young, we had them sleep on the lower bunks as I didn’t feel they were safe enough for them to be up there. Tina’s Top Tip for the Day - With the current dining arrangements of Any Time, is to make it a priority once onboard to get your dinner reservations sorted or you will be like us and relegated to The Pantry (food course style) for dinner. Saturday, 22nd October – Day at Sea With the unfortunate weather event unfolding we woke up to a very dreary day with rough seas. These seas really upset my husband and daughter. But thanks to our incredible Captain and his team on the bridge we sailed North towards Gladstone to escape this weather. By approx. 1pm we had blue skies and the pools were open! My highlight for the day was WINNING BINGO! I took home a neat $1000 which will help towards our onboard account! We spent the afternoon enjoying the pool and trying our luck at the afternoon bingo - everyone was excited

and the whole family joined in. This cruise was one of P&O’s themed Short Break cruises and our theme for the weekend was Country. P&O brought several talented country music artists onboard and the days and evenings were filled with country themed games, lessons, shows and more. Tina’s Top Tip for the Day - If you are prone to motion/sea sickness make an appointment either onboard or prior to departing with a qualified acupuncturist who can assist you. Sunday, 23rd October – Day at Sea We woke up to beautiful blue skies and relatively calm seas – there was still the odd rolling wave out there. We enjoyed breakfast in the dining room with the kids who had Nutella pancakes with a chocolate milkshake with a delicious homemade donut on top! We then had our day planned out thanks to the P&O ‘Good Times’ which is delivered to your

cabin each evening. It was an action packed day with Table Tennis in the morning before we made our way to the Trivia. From trivia we headed straight to bingo and from Bingo it was time for lunch and a swim. See – it’s exhausting! For lunch we loved sitting around the pool with the live music and enjoyed pizza from Gradi Pronto and burgers from Luke’s Burger Bar. Both these options have a surcharge but are very affordable. From here the kids headed off to Kids Club while we indulged in the Spa Special of the Day. 75 minutes of pure bliss with a full body massage, facials and scalp massage – I think I may have snored at one point! Dinner was at the Dragon Lady restaurant onboard. This is an Asian fusion restaurant and is included in your fare. This wasn’t a favourite with the kids and although there was a kids menu, we had to take them to the Pantry to fill them up. The kids then went back to the kids club while the adults enjoyed the ticketed show ($20) onboard – Blanc de Blanc Uncorked. This R18+ show isn’t for the lighthearted but was thoroughly enjoyed.
At 9.30pm, it was lights out as it was Sunday night and with disembarkation early in the morning followed by school and work and we didn’t want to be too tired. Tina’s Top Tip for the Day – if you’re like me and enjoy a bit of pampering, wait until you get onboard and see the Daily Specials that the spa puts together. The prices are much more affordable and you get a lot more inclusions! Monday, 24th October An early start to watch the ship come into the cruise terminal. It’s quite fascinating and I do recommend that you are up to watch it all. We got ready and before we disembarked, enjoyed a beautiful last breakfast onboard. We all had a fabulous time, and it was a great ‘tester’ cruise for us as a family. I feel the kids really embraced the cruising lifestyle but I have a bit of work to do on my husband!! Pacific Encounter Fun Facts 15 dining options onboard with 4 of them included in your fare. 290 metres long 17 Decks 2600 passengers 105,865 gross tonnage There’s an F45 Studio onboard (additional cost) Did you know? Most cruise ships don't have a thirteenth deck.

KNOWING YOUR NUMBERS STOP GUESSING & PRICE WITH CONFIDENCE “Revenue Is Vanity, Profit Is Sanity, But Cash Is King” K nowing your PRICE can be a balancing act.
E
very week I have conversations around PRICE and how businesses value themselves and their services or products. Of course, you can be underselling yourself or overvaluing yourself. However, I find that in most cases, it is underselling and not understanding how to analyse and make an informed decision on pricing strategies. For some, they have a strategy of ‘cut or discount’ their price, thinking they have to undercut their competition or give the best low-price value for customers (not realising that undercutting doesn’t support longevity as a reputable business). For others, they are continually telling me they can't charge a higher price – but I know their competitors do! Most still don’t understand that the value of the service they give is more than the price they charge. In all cases, they are undercutting their business's profitability and long-term sustainability. In business, you are not a charity. It would be best if you focused on building a reliable and profitable business that pays you and creates profit to reinvest in your business for building long-term value. So are you buying yourself a job or creating an investment? Knowing what your figures are telling you. Do you understand what your “Profit and Loss” is telling you? I find that the businesses I work with don’t understand their numbers partly because their “Chart of accounts” is set up for compliance and taxation and not for “Business Financial Management.”
Services for Business Growth & Improvement Helping you build your knowledge, confidence, performance and profitability with your Small Business Specialist. 14 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
The first thing I am doing as a Cashflow Business Coach is discussing the Charts of Accounts to enable business owners to understand what their numbers are telling them. Their Profit and Loss also should support your pricing strategy. This goes back to making good decisions around price and growth, being confident that the price is right to enable profitability. Your “Profit and Loss” tells the story of your price!
“ Making more money will not solve your problems if cashflow management is your problem.” Spending time on Financial Management. Spending time knowing your numbers and your financial management (not just your accounting) is part of running a good business. Taking the time to regularly devote time to your numbers – if need be, make an appointment with yourself every week and every month and just do it. Are you a charity or building a reliable, sustainable business? Need help, then don’t forget that our first conversation is free. Need someone to make you accountable to your commitment BOOK NOW

UNCOVERING
LOGAN’S HISTORY
Come along as we uncover Logan’s history through stories and images from the past.
W
hen people usually think of Crocodiles, their mind usually goes to Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter, Australia Zoo, the Northern Territory or even possibly northern Queensland – not Logan. However, this all changed in 1905, when locals caught a massive crocodile in the Logan River. It all started on June 22, 1905, when rumours a crocodile had been living in the Logan River, south of Brisbane, were confirmed when local storekeeper Alf Hinds spotted something “floating on the surface of the water, under a willow tree”. Hinds, with the assistance of his brother Jack and publican Charles Rumpf, towed the dead crocodile “down to the ferry landing, and pulled it up onto the bank”. According to the Brisbane Courier newspaper, the 3.83m crocodile had been shot at a few days prior, but not for the first time. Earlier in the year, it was reported that William Hammel, an aerated water manufacturer, had sighted
16 | Logan Guide
“a large alligator” on the bank of the river. He shot at the creature with his rifle, supposedly wounding it, before it “took to the water and disappeared”. The final, fatal shot is generally attributed to one, Charlie Goetsch. The discovery of the dead crocodile caused great excitement in Logan Village. Locals posed behind their new trophy and schoolchildren were allowed to inspect this “curiosity”. The Brisbane Courier published a photograph showing a small schoolboy’s head next to the open jaws of the croc, which was later skinned and its stomach was revealed to contain corn, several ducks and small turtles. During the crocodile scare, some were sceptical. A few weeks before the discovery of the dead crocodile a cheeky journalist from the Beaudesert Despatch newspaper attributed sightings to "the bad grog dispensed by the Waterford publicans". The Beaudesert Herald hit back by publishing a letter to the editor saying, "For the benefit of your readers it may not be out of place to mention that the writer of the paragraph referred to was not afraid to sample the "bad grog" on the occasion of the opening of the Waterford Dip. Drinks were free. Nuff sed" The question remained: how did a crocodile end up so far south? Rumour had it that nine years earlier, two well-known Brisbane residents were given a crocodile as a Christmas gift, but the contents of the package mysteriously went missing. If true, it lends credence to the admonition that pets aren’t just for Christmas – they’re for life.

ne of the hardest things to write is something about yourself, mainly because I am pretty sure most of us believe we are unremarkable, at least to other people. I myself was bullied a great deal in high school, just because of my red hair and appearance. So, I have always been a little gun shy of people. I started singing when I was 15 and it was very confronting to get up in front of people when I was sure they would make fun of me. However, I won a talent contest when I was 16 at what used to be the Club hotel at Waterford, beating an Elvis guy which was to be ironic later when I was back up singer in an Elvis Tribute show.
I never went into another talent contest because everyone was far too competitive and that was not what it was about for me. We are all different and I am positive there are entertainers out there better than me, but all I can do is try my best. Customer service is like putting on a show; you do your best to make people welcome and give them a positive experience. I have spoken a lot about my singing because when people ask me what I do, to me that is my main job and it will be until I lose my voice of people stop letting me entertain them. It has been interesting to me how much the Cafe and my singing have entwined at times. We have had a few events where I brought in my equipment and sang for people. Having the equipment was especially handy when we hosted a community meeting back in early 2020 before the pandemic broke out. It was a great turn out and we filled the cafe and spilled outside both doors. We had our local police there to answer questions and share information. A member of our community recorded it for those who missed the meeting. Only weeks later we were all told Covid had broken out and we were now amongst a global pandemic.

Alyson of Norma May Honey lost her father in those first few months of that first lock down and the last time he had spoken in public was at the community meeting. We got a copy of the video for Alyson and it is a memory she treasures because it was the last time her dad, Keiron was himself before he died. We have tried to stay true to what we have always said about being a community hub, so when Alyson said she wanted to start a hobby business with honey, I suggested she keep some of it at the Cafe so people could see it. The lady who filmed that video was Tina from Healing Stone creations so it was only fitting

that she too has her gorgeous jewellery on display too. Both women have been a great inspiration for me and kept me going when I wanted to give up. There have been quite a few people now that have supported us by continuing to come in every day and we know that is part of the reason we are still here. Another part of the reason we survived was a generous Chef who helped us out when he had time during the strong hold of the Pandemic. I am very grateful for everything he showed me and for the amazing curry everyone has become accustomed to.
While he is too busy now to come in, the recipes and know how he left me with has helped me to keep up with all the muffins, cakes and cookies here at the Cafe, as well as my own Cinnamon rolls. My business partner Michael (also my ex) comes in when he can, mostly on Saturdays and our son Alex has been instrumental in training our part time staff as well as working here himself. We are always evolving and looking for new ways to get better. Our next major event is dear to my heart and I am asking people to please come and support us on our “Day For Jim”, a celebration for one of our community who left us way too soon.
Day for Jim
On November 19th at our Cafe, there will be Music and fun, with all proceeds being passed on to Jim’s wife Melissa and daughters Jada and Maya.

or over five years MultiLink Community Service in Logan Central has been successful in running Qld Government funded employment projects ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ with the local community. One such project is the Certificate II in Supply Chain Operations which helps participants gain skills used in warehousing and industrial type roles. Here is another great story from the program. Kham Thang and his family are originally from Myanmar. As refugees they moved to India and then migrated to Australia in 2019.
MultiLinks Cert. II Supply Chain course through a friend and made contact with MultiLink. After the meeting, Kham decided he would give the training a go, and what an excellent decision that turned out to be! Kham said he found the course gave him a boost of confidence as his English had improved throughout the program and he was able to gain his Forklift Licence, Dangerous Goods and First Aid Certificate. Through the support of MultiLink, Kham was then able to secure an interview with a local hose-fitting company ‘Aquaknect’ (based in Meadowbrook) and successfully landed a fulltime role! This is Kham’s first job in Australia. Kham’s goals now are to keep improving his English and working and saving to buy a truck and run his own business. Kham also mentioned, in his culture it is a great honour to be working and earning money that supports himself and his family. Aquaknect are really happy with his work ethic and performance and have now taken on several more participants from this program. Kham, you should be a proud young man. THE HEART OF SQUASH Local squash community coming together to help raise funds to help children affected by domestic violence.
O
n the 15th of October, last month was World Squash Day for 2022. World Squash Day (usually on the 14th or 15th of October) is a day when every squash club in the world joins together to play squash and give money to charity. This year, to celebrate Daisy Hill Squash & Racquet Club hosted their first handicap tournament alongside the Rotary Club of Rochedale South East Technology Park, who came together to help raise funds for the Zephyr Education Inc. “The event was a huge success and thanks to the generosity of those who attended, more than $5,000 was raised to help children affected by domestic violence get back to school. Smashing our original target of $3,000!” stated Brad from Daisy Hill Squash Club. “We had 46 players involved in our first handicap tournament held at Daisy Hill Squash Club where you can see social club players beating our professional development players and having lots of fun just to be on the court with them.” “Congratulations to Sharon Denning, who was the tournament winner. She was presented with the Logan Cup Trophy supplied by the Rotary Club of Rochedale South East Technology Park.”
24 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
It was a great day with much fun, great squash and for a great cause. The Zephyr Education Inc. (formerly, Zephyr Foundation) was founded in 2013, by the charity’s President, Isabella Bevan, David Bevan AM, Carmel Martin and Terry Martin. It was established to help children at domestic violence shelters resume their education by supplying them with everything they need to start at their new school. The charity was established after Isabella read a newspaper article about the plight of these children. At the time, she was managing the uniform shop of a large secondary school so she knew exactly what the children needed. The Club was first introduced to Zephyr Education Inc. by Senior Sergeant, Matthew Scott from the Springwood Police and a member of the Daisy Hill Squash Club community, who came across Zephyr Education Inc during his time in the Police force. “I have been with the police since 1991. Back then when I was going around in my patrol
18 ALLAMANDA DR, DAISY HILL
car, responding to domestic violence was only around 20% of our work. Now, probably around 60% of our time is spent responding to people in distress, low points in their lives and seeing the impact (domestic violence) has on the individuals, their families and the community in general”. “Thank you to the Daisy Hill Squash Club and Rochedale South East Technology Park for promoting this initiative. It is an extremely worthy cause because it brings forth into the broader community the issue of domestic violence. Unfortunately (domestic violence) is a huge issue for us still. A whole community response is needed to get on top of it but in the meantime, we try and do as much as we can with what we got and help those in need like Zephyr Education Inc., which is an excellent example of that.” If you would like to learn more about Zephyr Education Inc. or would like to donate, visit their website, zephyreducation.com.au.

RESET, RELEASE, REALISE From her dance studio on Commercial Drive in Shailer Park, Laney Gooch reminisced on her own experiences as a professional dancer and how they’ve led her to open her dance school.
R
eset Dance Studio provides an opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to indulge themselves in dance. While opening a studio, Laney hopes to share her lifelong passion for dance with others. In April 2021, Reset Dance Studio officially was up and running. The name Reset comes from the experience dealing with Covid, especially the lockdowns. “It was about everyone resetting ourselves back in this new norm and resetting the idea of the dance industry. It was time to shake things up a bit and that's exactly what I intend to do” explained Laney. Tell us about yourself and your journey starting 'Reset Dance Studio'. Dance and music were a big passion of mine from as far back as I can remember but going officially into dance started when I was training as a gymnast from the age of 7-14years and realised I only really loved doing the floor routine. So, it was an easy transition into dance around the age of 14 years old. When I was 16, I successfully auditioned for the Brisbane Bullets cheerleading squad and this
28 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
became my first taste of professional dance life. After this, I decided to pursue dance as a career and was very fortunate to continue dancing professionally for the next 12 years. Having left the entertainment industry, I got married and had two beautiful girls, I soon found myself back in the dance world via my children. It was eye-opening to see how far the industry has come and I became a little surprised at how competitive the world of dance just for children had also become. I do believe in healthy competition but I also believe that dance does so much more and wanted to create a studio that wasn't only for the elite but for any girl or boy wanting to give it a go. There isn't only one way to achieve your goals and it's important to let children know that a piece of paper doesn't only mean you are good at something, especially when it comes to dancing. Dance is a feeling, dance is a passion, dance is an art and it is subjective. Do it because it makes you happy not because someone says that you can only dance if you do this, this and this otherwise you are never going to make it.
If you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to make it happen. I know I did. This isn't just in dance, it's in every aspect of life. What classes do you provide and how many students do you have? I provide all foundational dance genres including Jazz, Acro, Hip-hop, Tap and Ballet. I also provide Singing because music is so important for dance and also Breakdance or as it is technically called Break. I am one of the only studios in the greater Brisbane area that offers Break classes for children, which is very exciting as Break will be an official sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics and again in Brisbane's 2032 Olympics as well. I currently have approximately 55 students and still counting. What differentiates you from other dance studios? In addition to providing Break(breakdance), all my teachers, both male and female, are professional dancers within the industry. They still take dance classes themselves which helps to keep them up to date with what is relevant within the dance world. I also allow students to decide what best suits them and where they would like to take their dance journey but also help guide them with where they potentially would like to go. I don't restrict students to have to do genres like ballet as I am not a ballet studio but I also make sure that if they would like to pursue, for example, genres like contemporary, then it's important to train in the technique and foundations of ballet. Provide an example of a time when you had to help a student overcome an obstacle in their dance training. I have a student that decided she wasn't happy at her previous dance studio as they insisted, she does ballet even though she had lost her
passion for ballet. She decided to take a risk and come and join me at my studio. Since she has been with Reset, she has had the freedom to try many different styles of dance including Break and is now training very hard and has found that passion for dance once more. She has now returned to ballet class as she understands the importance of the foundations for ballet without having the pressures of having to do ballet to be able to pursue other dance genres at the same time. She's been able to get back up on stage and compete again without the restrictions she felt she had at the other more ballet-based studio. What challenges have you come across in your business & how have you overcome them? Starting any new business has its challenges. My most challenging thing has been finding the right person/people to work with me. It's a slow grind, especially at the beginning and it takes time, patience, trust and belief that with hard work and persistence it can be successful. I've found that it was best to do most of the work on my own at the start but now have finally found someone who I believe is the right person to work with me, has the passion, loves the dance industry and sees the potential on where Reset can go. What's a little known fact about you? I lived in Japan for 10 years, mainly in Tokyo. Through that time, I worked as a Backup dancer for famous Japanese singers, bands and international artists performing in front of hundreds of thousands of people. I also worked on numerous TV commercials, music videos, corporate events, T.V. shows, Stage shows, Magic shows and Nightclubs. For more information about Reset Dance Studio and its classes, visit their website, www.resetdancestudio.com.au.
At Reset Dance Studio our classes are suitable for both boys and girls from 2 to 15 years of age. We offer many different classes from hip-hop, break, ballet, jazz, acro, singing & more

A WINDOW TO A
DIFFERENT WORLD By Brigitte Hawkins, Local Tutor
I
f the opportunity arose, would you learn a second language? My answer was, and still is, “Yes”.
I began learning Japanese when I was 55, and after 6 months of online lessons, I flew to Japan and spent 6 years working there: 5 years as a primary school teacher at the International School of Nagano, and 1 year as a language student at the International Language Academy in Sapporo. Sadly, I was compelled to return to Australia due to the covid outbreak; the thought of being cut off from my family for an indefinite period of time, sealed my decision to fly home. However, I still dearly miss all my friends and colleagues in Japan; and I also miss using and improving my Japanese language every day. I loved speaking it. I was challenged every day but joyful; and I definitely felt privileged. It was my window to a different world, and my door to participate more fully in another culture. I cannot underestimate the benefits of constant contact with native speakers; this truly immerses you in the language. Studying
30 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
Japanese with friendly locals in such stunning surroundings, I certainly had the best opportunity to become an enthusiastic and competent user. Furthermore, this language venture gave me a great opportunity to make meaningful comparisons with the English language, and added substantially to my existing knowledge. One interesting difference I found was that the Japanese language is notably distinct and consistent in structure, unlike English which has many exceptions in its rules, uses many words and phrases from other languages, and encourages the prolific use of idioms. English may be the most used language around the world but it is definitely not the best. Significantly, a second language is an amazing window through which to view the many unique and intriguing aspects of a culture and its history, enriching and often challenging your knowledge, perceptions and beliefs. The Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) who himself spoke 6 languages, once said, “If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world.” With excitement, I aspire to agree.

DISCOVER A PLACE OF BELONGING A place for locals to migrate, meet and mingle while experiencing Aboriginal culture. By Jen Williams, Magpie Place
M
y journey started many moons ago! When I was a very young girl in country Victoria, Ballarat, I had a sense of injustice and wanted to see justice for all. I felt a natural love for Aboriginal people as my best friend was of Aboriginal descent. He was so sweet; however, he used to get bullied on a daily basis. Many years later, I felt a massive urge to create a safe space for all people to meet, mingle and migrate! I have been very fortunate and blessed to be working and volunteering in the Logan Aboriginal community. Due to these many years and connections and relationships, I developed a space that could support the local Aboriginal people by displaying and selling genuine Aboriginal Artwork at an affordable price. I had hoped, believed and dreamed that maybe our community would support us. They can do this by coming to buy coffee and maybe engage with a piece of art or even one of the many talented Aboriginal Artists and maybe even want to know more and feel a sense of Belonging at Magpie Place Coffee and Art Space. We are located at 8 Cinderella Drive, Springwood and are nestled at the bottom of the Invest Logan building. Magpie Place serves Coffee Mentality coffee, which has its own story. It is roasted locally and
34 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
is a unique boutique blend that makes a great cup of coffee. Additionally, we stock Real Chai (unique organic chai), naked syrups and choc powder (both Gluten Free and vegan-friendly) and offer a small select range of cakes and cookies from local Roberto’s Cheesecake shop. There is a quick takeaway window for those on the go as well as a dine-in option in our relaxed and unique space. Why not try one of our speciality drinks, Jen’s Peppermint Mocha. Not just refreshing, it is also uplifting and good for your mental health. Also, for those looking for a natural solution to an ailment, the café has doTerra oils to try and buy. It has been my absolute pleasure to develop Magpie Place into an emerging community space where all people are welcome. Opening in the midst of the Pandemic has highlighted how important it is to be able to connect and meet friends and neighbours and lovingly celebrate each day! My desire to grow the community space comes from the need for people to feel comfortable and free to stay and play. So, come along and meet me at Magpie Place to mingle with people and become part of our local community. For more information, visit their Facebook page, @Magpie Place or call 0435 137 938 to speak to Jen.

TIPS FOR SMOOTH GUT HEALTH WHILE TRAVELLING Travel can sometimes be stressful for your body, but following these simple tips can actually keep your gut healthy when you’re on the go.
D
elhi belly, Peru poos and one we Aussies know all too well, the Bali belly. Let’s be honest, it has happened to the best of us whilst travelling — usually at the worst time possible. As much as we all try to avoid it, it just happens. While preparing for a trip, the checklist often misses out on optimising gut health and it’s worrying. A healthy gut is a great thing to have on your side, but not only that but the gut is connected to emotional and mental well-being. In other words, gut health can truly have massive influence on many aspects of your travels. Here are some tips on how to keep your gut healthy while traveling: Watch your water intake Most of us know the importance of staying hydrated, especially if we’re somewhere hot.
36 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
Not only does it help with general health, it also helps with gut transit (in other words, it keeps things moving and helps prevent constipation). This can be especially useful if travelling has left you feeling a bit backed-up. If you’re in any doubt about the local tap water, buy bottled (always check the seal) and avoid ice in drinks. Load up on fibre Healthy eating can often go out the window on holiday – but a lack of fibre when we’re travelling can be one of the main culprits of
constipation. Pack your diet with local fruit and veg, nuts, seeds, wholegrains and beans to keep yourself regular. Stay active Long periods of inactivity can make the digestive system sluggish so if you’re travelling on the plane do the leg exercises or when you’re relaxing by the pool, get up and move around every hour.
Pack some probiotics When traveling, changes in your normal diet or routine can disrupt the natural balance of good bacteria in your gut. Taking probiotics can make all the difference. Not only can probiotics help your digestion, they can help prevent and stop travelers’ diarrhea and boost your immune system overall.
Minimise street food How can you even avoid them in the first place? A wise and tried-and-tested approach is avoiding street food. We know it is usually the tastiest, but sometimes it exposes the gut to bacteria that will put you out for the rest of the trip.

ECO-FRIENDLY ARTS AND CRAFTS PROJECTS
I
f you love traversing the aisles of your local craft store to gather supplies, it may be time to rethink your strategy. While it’s admittedly fun to browse for new materials, it’s not always eco-friendly. Plus, you likely already have the supplies at home — though they might be hiding in your garbage bin. Toilet paper rolls, empty milk cartons, broken crayons, and even styrofoam can all make for perfect art supplies. You just need to know how to use them. Repurposing and upcycling these materials will reduce your waste and create something new and usable, which is a win for both you and the planet! Today, we will be showing you different arts and craft projects (mainly using materials you’ll already find at home) that are great for both children and adults.
38 ||Logan LoganGuide Guide
Beautiful terrariums Bottle gets a second life as a museum-worthy terrarium as well as a home for an environmental science project. Be sure to add the activated charcoal and moss for plastic bottle terrariums that flourish.
Patchwork Blankets Transform fabric scraps and old t-shirts into a colorful patchwork blanket. This craft is straightforward and perfect for beginners. Plus, it’s super customisable. Feel free to make your quilt as large or small as you’d like using whatever materials you have lying around. This project saves you from buying more blankets and the environment from needlessly taking on your wasted fabric scraps. Moreover, these quilts make great gifts for family members and friends.
Create nature wreaths Take your kids on a nature walk to gather interesting leaves, flowers, berries, etc.
Tin Can Hair Using a tin can and wheat or grass you can create all sorts of funny characters. Have the kids create paper cut outs or use recycled items for the face, fill it with soil, and then sprinkle in some grass seed. It won’t take long for the head to start growing grass hair. You can let the hair grow long or trim it up. I think a Mohawk would be fun, what about you?
To make the wreath forms, braid together strips of old t-shirts and form into a circle. Then attach natural items into the crevices and secure with clear fishing line or hot glue. Attach a ribbon at the top to hang your wreath.

THE POWER OF ART Senior Visual Art Teacher at Kimberley College, Roya Khorsandi, shares the value and importance of the Arts. By Roya Khorsandi, Senior Visual Art Teacher at Kimberley College
A
rt is both a relaxing and inspiring activity. It’s a great way to express emotions without words, understand feelings and communicate personal messages. It also has substantial benefits on students’ mental health as it fosters their need for selfexpression.
“ ”
Creating art can help our students discover themselves. It helps them recognise and acknowledge their feelings and emotions, improve their selfesteem and confidence. Arts can also relieve stress and relax students’ mind and body. It's very important to know that not all students should be talented artists or should have innate artistic skills to fully value and benefit from art classes. Their commitment and resilience help them thrive and grow. The greatest benefit and impact of art is giving a safe outlet to our students to express their viewpoints and opinions on different social, personal and cultural matters as it broadens their perspectives and horizons. Through creative thinking, they can find new solutions to problems.
“
Art is all about problem solving and critical thinking and it certainly helps them get equipped with the right mindset for the future ahead.
”
Art students are encouraged to be conscious and responsive to what is going on around them to be able to communicate a meaningful personal message to their audience. This makes them more empathetic and tolerant. Through exposure of creating art pieces, they develop awareness, acceptance and appreciation to different people, places and ideas. In our society, mental health has never been more important than ever. One of the lessons of Covid was the importance the Arts still plays in our modern world. When we were all in isolation, we sought refuge in the Arts and entertainment to cope. It was crafts, painting, knitting, watching movies, learning new instruments that came to our rescue. There needs to be a stronger focus on the value and importance of the Arts in our educational system. Considering all its benefits on mental, social and cognitive developments of children and young adults, it is crucial for governments and educational institutes to promote the Arts now and into the future.

Area 51 was amazing! There was an impressive slippery ball-pit, some rock climbing, a shooting ball gun section and a lot more. The trampolines were awesomely bouncy and strong. The only thing I found difficult was escaping the foam cube pit which was not easy. The big maze full of obstacles near the ball pit was also tricky to get out of but exciting. To make Area 51 even more fun, I think they could add different sized swings, remove the obstacles from the slides, and add even more activities that are vigorous. I highly recommend a fun session at Area 51. By Tahsan Ahmed – grade 3 student (My rating: 5 stars)
I really enjoyed Area 51 because it is so big and it is full of surprises and fun activities. I went on every single one except ice-skating. On school holidays when there are a lot of kids, I think they should employ even more staff to help. When I was on the trampolines, I hurt back and even though I was ok, no staff saw me to come and help me. Overall, however, I believe, Area 51 is the best indoor playground in Australia! By Tausif Ahmed – grade 5 student (My rating: 4.5 stars)
Thank you, Logan City Guides and Area 51 for our family pass. My brothers and I had an incredible time. I had never seen such a mammoth indoor playground with everything: laser tag, flying, futsal, high ropes, rock-wall climbing, trampolines, massive ball pits and more. My favourite was the blue and black high-slide which was super-fast. Because it was the busy school-holiday time, the only downside was that we had to wait in very long lines for some activities. How safe are you online? I
n recent months, millions of Australians have had a bad run with their personal data. Whether it’s telecommunications companies like Optus, private health insurers like Medibank, massive online retailers like MyDeal, or smaller online wine sellers like Vinomofo — hackers are getting hold of our data regularly. With all these data breaches happening to major corporations, just how safe are we and our personal data online and is there anything we can do to protect ourselves? We asked the local community and here are some of the responses we got.
Unless you proactively protect yourself, you have virtually no privacy on the internet. To stay safe online you need to use a good Virtual Private Network (VPN) and have a good virus protection program are just some of the steps you can take to protect yourself online.

Yes. A lot of people do especially on social media. It’ll surprise you just how much information one can get about a person in a matter of minutes. This is why one has to be very careful with the kind of information they put out there. Don’t share what you don’t want people to see or know.

The internet is a very interesting place and safe enough once you understand the rules. Most people will interact with only a few websites and services over their entire lifetime. But the deeper you go, the less policed the internet becomes, and consequently, the more dangerous. There is always someone who will prey on you if you give them the chance, no matter where you are on the internet. Even fairly innocuous social media services have an underbelly of predators and scammers.
Excellent question. Nothing is for sure. But you can take steps to decrease your exposure online. Only deal with vendors on the web you know have excellent security. Be very careful when receiving emails that appear to come from a legit source asking for your login credentials. Only give the information necessary to obtain the services you wish to purchase. Unfortunately, as news stories show us daily, there is no such thing as ironclad security.

Here’s the thing… people, especially kids aren’t safe online, ever! In today’s day and age, any child on an open browser is a few clicks away from seeing something that would cause any parent to have a panic attack. Are there ways to help prevent this? Yes. but never say never.

RAY WHITE SPRINGWOOD EXPANDS TO SHAILER PARK
R
ay White Springwood principal Lindsay Battley has expanded his real estate offering to Shailer Park in Brisbane’s south.
Mr Battley has consistently been ranked in the top performing business leaders in the Ray White Queensland network and has been with the leading group for more than 25 years. He has now taken his high performing office to the next level by opening another office in Shailer Park and will trade under Ray White Springwood and Shailer Park. Originally hailing from regional Victoria and coming from a rural and stock agent family, Mr Battley visited Brisbane on holidays 28 years ago and never left. “My father has always been a stock agent and as early as 12 years old I was going to work with him and seeing the real estate agents at work. I remember thinking that’s what I want to be one day,” Mr Battley said. He brought Victoria’s love of auctions with him to the sunshine state and has purpose built his Springwood and Shailer Park offices to have capacity to host in-room auctions which are run fortnightly. “Auctions are the base of our business and I have every intention of continuing to grow that,” Mr Battley said.

A well run auction campaign will outsell any private treaty sale.” The new Shailer Park office will operate in conjunction with Mr Battley’s Springwood office and he said wider coverage will enable the team to better serve the local community. “Having two offices gives us a larger marketplace to grow into and the ability to service everyone we’re in touch with by giving them a better opportunity to sell,” he said. “Two offices are better than one and now we’ll have a bigger and stronger presence by reaching more buyers and sellers between the two offices that share the same type of market.” After almost three decades in the business, Mr Battley takes pride in the high standard of his team. “Our team are mostly locals so they have a lot of knowledge about the area, they live here and
know what’s going on and what’s important to the people of Springwood and Shailer Park,” he said. “I know I am able to trust every one of them and that comes back to culture. I have no doubt my staff are the strongest part of my office. “I think it’s so important to take advantage of all the superior training, technology and resources Ray White has to offer to continue to allow them to grow. The width and breadth of the training and support on offer at Ray White far exceeds anyone else in the marketplace.” Ray White Queensland CEO Jason Andrew congratulated Mr Battley on his expansion into Shailer Park. “We are delighted that Lindsay has chosen to open another Ray White office with us,” Mr Andrew said. “He is one of our leading Brisbane principals and has recently been recognised with the group's Tony Fountain Excellence award for his work in continuing founder Ray White’s legacy through auctions. “I have no doubt Ray White Springwood with its expansion to Shailer Park will continue to be an asset to the group and looking forward to celebrating Lindsay’s success in the future.”

Kingscliff is home to a variety of upmarket boutique clothes, surf and sports shops and a great range of cafes and restaurants. One shop you can miss out on visiting is Meraki Blu Boutique & Homewares. Located in the Peppers Salt Resort & Spa, on Bells Blvd, Meraki Blu opened in August 2019. “In 2019, we opened our doors. After many years of dreaming about what my boutique would look like, but never really thinking it would come to fruition. I guessed I lacked the confidence to take the next step. Not having been in retail previously, I wasn’t sure where to start,” stated Cheryle, owner of Meraki Blu. “My background was in finance and for 32 years I had the pleasure of helping people make the most important decisions with their finances – purchasing homes, vehicles and businesses. This gave me one certainty in opening this retail business – I knew I could balance the till every day!” The name Meraki (pronounced “may-rah-kee”), is a Greek word that is used to describe doing something with soul, creativity or love – when you put “something of yourself” into what you are doing and that is exactly what Cheryle has been doing since opening her store. Jumping in head first, learning all things fashion and retail.
“As scary as it was, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to date. Who knew I had this little creative side to me to build a beautiful space that I would come every day and welcome others to enjoy,” explained Cheryle. Each item in the store is selected by Cheryle. Alongside her team, Cheryle merchandises the store, carefully hand picking each item curating beautiful fashion, accessories and homewares for you to create a life with love, passion and soul. “I am constantly complimented on how lovely the shop is, what gorgeous homewares and the ladies love the fashion labels we stock. I love offering suggestions on how to achieve a particular look whether it be what you wear or adding that something special to a place in your home,” stated Cheryle. “I pride myself in the personalised service that you will receive as soon as you walk in our door. We are friendly and enjoy meeting and learning about our customers – let's just say we love a “chat”! We invite you to entice your senses with our gorgeous store and hope you fall in love with it as much as we have.” For more information about Meraki Blu or to stay up to date with their latest products, visit their website, www.merakiblu.com.au or their Facebook page, @ Meraki Blu. www.merakiblu.com.au

McGraths pursuits are more creative bringing music and joy to many with his help of his wife and band members of his ukulele group. David and Angela perform for local community events, schools and nursing homes regularly. When asked what it meant to reach this milestone David replied, “Being a small business owner through many different economic climates over our 20 years has been both challenging and rewarding. It’s a privilege for us to not only bring a service to our community but to build and develop strong relationships with our customers who we have seen grow and have families over our tenure”. Tanghulu Candied Fruit Skewers
T
anghulu is a popular candied fruit snack popular throughout northern China. This Chinese street food is different from a traditional candied fruit. Instead of a soft candied fruit, the hardened sugar syrup creates a hard crunchy shell around the fruit.
Ingredients 15 assorted small fresh fruits (strawberries, cherries, grapes, kiwi) 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup water 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 5 wooden skewers
2
Divide fruit among wooden skewers, 3 pieces each, arranging fruits to cover end of skewer and ensuring fruits are touching.
3
Stir together sugar, water, and corn syrup in a small shallow saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, undisturbed. Reduce heat to medium-low, cook, undisturbed, until a candy thermometer registers 150 degrees C, 18 to 20 minutes.
4
Meanwhile, prepare an ice bath. You won’t have time once the fruit has been covered in hot sugar syrup. Prep the ice water early so you can dip them in quickly.
5
Remove pan from heat, let stand until bubbles subside, 1 to 2 minutes. Carefully tilt pan so sugar mixture pools to one side. Working quickly, place fruit end of one skewer in sugar mixture, rotating to fully coat; allow excess syrup to drip back into pan. Place dipped skewer, fruit side down, in ice bath, allowing to cool fully, about 1 minute. Place, fruit side up, in a heavy cup or saucepan. Repeat with remaining skewers and sugar mixture, working quickly.
Method
1
Stem, core, or otherwise prepare fruit so that each bite-size piece is entirely edible. Pat outsides of fruit dry with paper towels, and place on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. (Wet fruit will prevent the sugar from sticking.)

THE MISSING INGREDIENT! What Are Some Qualities or Characteristics That Make a Good Restaurant?
A
good restaurant sets a high standard for its food quality and ensures that guests receive the same quality with every meal. Serving quality food can earn the restaurant a good reputation and compel guests to return for repeat visits. High-quality ingredients and an experienced kitchen staff are important to serving good food consistently. A good cook understands their guests' needs and works well with the kitchen staff to ensure that guests receive their meal the way they ordered it every time.
en’t been smiling, make sure to check your online reviews on a regular basis to learn what customers think of the experience they received at your restaurant.
A Positive Overall Experience
A Unique Selling Differential
One of the key characteristics of a successful restaurant is a positive customer experience. The staff who interact with their guests should be courteous and maintain a positive attitude. Servers should know the menu well, deliver guests’ food and drinks on time, and quickly address any issues that an unsatisfied guest may have. Preferably with that ‘Smile! And if you hav-
A good restaurant should have one or more unique features that stand out in a customer’s mind and give it a competitive advantage over others. Unique selling differential, or unique selling proposition.
64 | Logan Guide
For example, your restaurant may be the only restaurant in town that makes its ingredients fresh daily or it may have an amazing
view that none of the competitors have. It might be an affordable restaurant that offers coupons, discounts and kids-eat-free, or it might be a high-end, fine-dining eatery that has a themed night? The food, decor and staff are just some of the features of a restaurant. Your eatery should be built around something solid. Funny restaurant names, for example, might be cute for the first few months, but often get old after a while. Think about your restaurant description. If you can't describe your restaurant in a sentence, you might not have a strong identity. So, here is the project we are launching from this issue! See below for details. We look forward to your participation in the coming weeks.

IT’S OK TO SAY NO
How to Politely Decline a Sales Offer Without Burning Bridges By Simon K
I
f you run a successful business, chances are you get dozens of calls and emails every single day. The harsh truth is, not all of them are worth your time. However, there is no shame in saying “no” to a sales offer — on the contrary, it is better for your image to politely decline instead of ignoring such calls or emails. Declining this kind of offer could be made painless for both recipient and sender. However, true sales & marketers still exist, and one day you can find yourself in such a situation, and you will have to decline a personal sales offer. As a marketing business owner working locally, can I suggest that it is good to politely decline a sales offer and make it less painful and timeconsuming for both parties. The Reasons Why You May Have to Decline an Offer There are several reasons you’d like to politely say no to a salesperson. Some of the main reasons why you may want to reject a sales offers are:
72 | Logan Guide
• You don’t need the suggested product or service. Sometimes we receive offers we simply don’t find useful or pertinent to your business. • You don’t have the budget for it. You cannot afford the proposed product or service right now and therefore have to reject a sales proposal politely. • The investment isn’t a wise strategy. Business can hardly be considered a piece of cake,
especially when it comes to meeting the demand of market tendencies. Rejecting an offer is sometimes a strategic move. Now that we have established some of the main reasons to say no, let’s move on to the rejection itself and discover how to refuse an offer politely. How to Politely Decline a Sales Offer In a nutshell, the general rule of proper rejection is being short yet informative and straightforward. Thank the Person As he or she spent considerable time researching the information about your company and writing the letter, it’s inappropriate not to thank him or her for their effort. Starting your letter with “thank you for your time/email/ offer” can ensure that the salesperson will be more understanding of your rejection.
Explain Your Reasoning If you explain your rejection thoroughly, there would be no need for further communication. Make it clear exactly why you are not interested in the offer. It will make the conversation simpler and shorter for both of you. Suggest Other Ways of Partnership (If Appropriate) Salespeople can’t know for sure what you are looking for and sometimes miss the spot. If you see alternative business opportunities, mention them in your communication. Sales pros are often looking for any potential opportunity and will be happy to help you with your requests.
After all, this person is just trying to do their job. Don’t consider it as spam, be understanding and show empathy. This person may become a good source of potential leads too, don’t forget! Deliver the News Directly People tend to drag their feet while rejecting a sales proposal. My thoughts on how to decline a sales offer is, to put it bluntly. You don’t want to give the salesperson false hope; it’s better to rip off the band-aid fast.

One or Two? By Gracy Sidhu
A
re two dogs as your pets, better than one? Many people believe that only one dog is enough but others also believe that two dogs are better so what are the facts? When considering whether to buy one or two dogs, we need to consider the cost, the time spent and the health benefits. Although it is true that two dogs may cost double the money, there are many pet stores that provide discounts, bulk deals and some even give away free items. So, when buying dual items such as food, beds, and medicine, as well as paying vet bills, you can find helpful bargains. Some things such as toys and cleaning products are almost the same price that you would pay for one dog. Even though two dogs are slightly more expensive than one, they can also be double the fun when you spend time with them. The main reason people buy a second dog is because they can spend enjoyable and relaxing time with them. When you arrive home, your dogs have already played with each other all day and are ready for a calm walk in a local park and the fresh air. If you prefer to watch a movie and relax on the couch, you can because your dogs are exhausted from playing together all day. Although it takes a bit more time to clean up after two dogs, the delightful time you spend walking them both is the same compared 74 | Logan Guide
Gracy to one dog. Furthermore, if you go to a dog park and there are no dogs there, your two dogs will still have fun running around. Playing and spending time together, you and the dogs are also happier and healthier. As well as increasing your own physical and mental health, having two dogs also improves your dog’s health and well-being. Happily, most dogs play the game of fetch as long as you wish and this exercise increases their fitness because they are running continuously after the toy which can be a ball or a favourite toy or even a stick. After this tiring activity, a calm walk will be the perfect way for you and your dogs to unwind. This also improves everyone’s physical health. Furthermore, after a stressful day at work, there is nothing better than playing with your dogs which builds strong relationships as well as improving your dog’s as well as your mental health. Therefore, when considering whether to buy one or two dogs, it is critical to think carefully about the cost, the time needed, and the health benefits. Although two dogs are slightly more expensive and may take a bit more effort to take care of, they can be far better than one. If you spend time with them, two dogs will add more joy to your life. Are two dogs better than one? Absolutely!
A Reward For Hard Work By Aishah Iqbal
S
hould students receive a reward for the hard work they do at school? Most people who work, get paid. So, if students work, they should get paid as well, but if they don’t show up to school or don’t work hard, they shouldn’t get paid, just like an ordinary job. That’s reality! By paying students, the government is helping them to learn that education is valuable, saving is important, and equality is a part of our society. Shouldn’t students be paid to complete their studies? Isn’t education valuable? Most people see learning as a journey with treasure along the way. The more you learn the more you can do, and the more you can do the more options are available for your dream. Therefore, students should be encouraged to go to school to find out what they might enjoy doing for a future career. If a student is interested in art, they could take extra art lessons to find out if that’s the job for them. Payments will help them stay focused on their future and also help them see the value of saving money for that future job. When you grow up, wouldn’t you need money to live your own life? Every person wants to become independent when they grow up and having money can help you achieve your future dream. If
Aishah you’re studying at university and you need somewhere to live, you will at least have money to pay for your rent and also buy your groceries. By paying students, the government is helping them to watch their balance grow and they will see the importance of managing money. Even though money is useful, equality is also important and valuable. It shouldn’t matter if students are poor or rich, they should all receive an equal amount of pay. Earning the same amount of money from the government, they will feel like everyone has been given the same chance to succeed in whatever they choose to study. As they grow up, students will see the government is treating everyone equally so they will be more likely to treat everybody the same. This is showing respect and if a student is feeling respected at school, they will be more motivated to go there and learn. Therefore, all students should receive the same payment from the government. Significantly, the government should pay students for their hard work at school, so they can all finish their education and save at the same time. Just like adults, shouldn’t students receive a reward for the hard work they do at school? Logan City Guide | 75
Challenging Games By Sheza Islam
A
re computer games useful? All students love computer games because their entertaining and rewarding. However, these games add more knowledge, help with jobs in the future, and give more skills. Everybody should know that computer games give more knowledge and social skills. In these games there are a multitude of various animation series and documentaries on many different topics which teach people facts and social life. Computer games also show people how to behave and speak well. However, sometimes it can show poor communication, but it’s great for students to see that it’s not helpful. Therefore, computer games are amazing because they help students to learn about the world and these games also support students in their future choices.
Don’t you think that games can help young people in their future jobs? Careers, such as farming or engineering or becoming a vet or a pilot, need skills that students might like to practice before they do it in a real job. If people want to practice and learn, they can do it easily and safely on the computer: future vets can do surgeries without hurting real animals; future pilots can learn to fly the plane without crashing; and future engineers can practice building without the real building tumbling down. Computer games can definitely assist students to safely practice and then choose the job that they like. However, they will also need computer skills. Isn’t it important to have computer skills for winning a game? Isn’t it also important to have them for your future job? If students program computer games, they would do really well and achieve their game’s aim. They would also be practicing programing skills for a future job. Furthermore, in future jobs, students will need to know how to use apps tabs, how to use touch pads, and how to follow instructions. These can all be practiced easily and enjoyably when playing computer games. Children love computer games because they are entertaining, rewarding and challenging, but they are also useful because they add more knowledge, help with jobs in the future, and give more skill practice.

NAWAF Future Fun? By Nawaf Mohaimin
L
ooking back on the year 2022, I realise just how much school has dominated my life. I was chosen as school leader for 2022 which was a wonderful challenge for me. Now I am at the end of the year and looking forward to graduation and our end of primary school celebration! Our last final fun activity will be a day playing and swimming at the Plantation Aquatic Centre at Gumdale. As well as having heaps of fun we will also be enjoying our scrumptious meal of pizza, popcorn, and poppas.
However, like all students in year 6, I have had to face the biggest decision of my life so far – Which high school is right for me? To make this choice I had to find out many things about the school I wanted to go to. I checked the website, I talked to former high school students, and I visited the school. Soon I will have to face the next chapter of my life I feel like my life is a book with four chapters: Primary, Secondary, University, Job! And I am only finishing chapter 1! Recently, my current school organised a Colour Fun Run. It was the best day of my life in chapter 1. The photos beginning and end definitely proved it. In this event we had to run around both ovals and at the end we had an enormous bubble fountain waiting for us to jump into. Our year 6 class used the bubble fountain the longest because we were the last class to run. Each Year 6 student was also given a bottle of colour to spray at our classmates. At the end of the day every year 6 student splashed slime on their teacher. The teachers were not happy! My question now is will chapter 2 be this much fun?

TALENT ON DISPLAY:
LOCAL STUDENTS DAZZLE IN LOCAL
ART SHOW
Local talented art students took part in Kimberley College’s annual art exhibition.
L
ast month in October, I was invited to attend Kimberley College’s annual art show and was blown away by the tremendous talent and skill on display as well as the quality of the artwork. The exhibition was to celebrate and acknowledge our Years 10, 11 and 12 Visual Art and Visual Art in Practice students' achievements, with at least one artwork of every Art student on display. “I am very proud of the students and the work they have done”, stated Roya Khorsandi, Senior Visual Art Teacher at Kimberley College, “Throughout the night, we had about 100 visitors come through.” It was truly eye-opening to see so many artworks made by talented and gifted students. The variety of art displayed on the night was excellent; with artwork made with a range of materials, styles and techniques – including painting, sculpture, weaving and even photoshop.
80 | Logan Guide
However, not only are these talented students dedicated to creating masterpieces in the classroom but they are also encouraged to participate, create artwork and compete in several competitions and exhibitions throughout Australia. “Throughout 2022, our Art students have been creating and submitting artworks for different competitions and exhibitions such as Brisbane Portrait Prize, Artwaves- Logan Art Gallery, STAEDTLER Artist of the Year and University of Canberra Creative Competition,” explained Mrs Khorsandi. “Some of them achieved excellent results and recognition including our Year 12 student, Leah Duncan who was awarded the 'Prestigious Packers Prize Award' for her artwork "The Minds War" in this year's Artwaves Exhibition. Leah was also recognised as 'Highly Commended' for the same artwork in Brisbane Portrait Prize Competition.' If you are interested in learning more about Kimberley College’s Art Department, contact the school on (07) 3209 0300 or visit their website, www.kimberley.college.
A WORD FROM THE ARTISTS Kayla Belle During the night, I had the opportunity to talk to several of these talented students about their art and their plans once they graduated from school. Here is what some of them had to say.
and techniques, all work together to depict the horrors and suffering they saw and experienced during their life. After graduating, I would like to go onto study law, focusing on defence or criminal law to become a barrister or solicitor. While art for me is more of a hobby, it holds a special place in my heart. Its my happy place and helps me to relax and de-stress. Hopefully, I will continue to create in the years to come.
My piece, ‘Her and music’, shows the transformation of a girl’s hair into a keyboard, signifying her love of music and how she feels it’s a part of her. My artistic style is inspired by the many cartoons and tv shows that interest me. I am particularly fond of anime in its detailed cartoonish feel that combines stylistic freedom and realism. Both my inspiration and personal experience with art have led me to want to pursue it as a full-time career, my next step hopefully being able to go to university and study animation.
Ellie McKenzie
Leah Duncan I started art (academically) in Grade 10, with painting being my favourite medium to work with. My art is a reflection of me, drawing inspiration from my life, surroundings and heritage. With a lot of my art taking inspiration from the Berlin Wall, the history of East Germany throughout the ages. It’s a way for me to honour my German heritage from my mother’s side. My 3 pieces, titled ‘The Debt of Another’ are self-portraits of my great grandfather and my great grandmothers who survived throughout the war. It details their experiences during the war - surviving concentration camps and being prisoners of war. The use of different mediums, textures
I create art to express myself, transferring raw emotions onto a canvas to explore my inner thoughts and feelings. My creations are often inspired by my experiences, interesting people, childhood memories, stories and social issues. Or, when my ideas are lacking, I can always refer to my trusty Pinterest boards filled with references. Art holds a very important place in my heart and I want to continue nurturing my passion for it well into the future. My current plans after graduating include a gap year to work on my portfolio for a bachelor of costume design which I plan to apply for at the end of 2023.
