The topic of discussion whilst we were putting this issue together was the passing of the ‘Great’ Elizabeth II, the only monarch we have known in our lifetime.
No doubt The Queen has been a loyal servant to her people and an inspiration to many. Regardless of our background and beliefs, she was our Queen and we simply say ‘Thank You’.
With the weather warming up and Covid no longer in our daily headlines, we all hope to forge ahead continuing to live a simpler way of life and supporting the locals.
Gracing our cover this month is one of our favourite business owners, Gemma & Leo, from the Little Red Dumpling Springwood. If you haven’t tried it already, it is a must do place where you will find wide range of yummy dumplings. Do go and try it.
In this issue, we are continuing to explore local breweries, short trips down south and yes, a must read also is a short story written by Laura who never cease to amaze us with her talents. Remember she is the café owner by day at Moonlight Bandit, and a singer by night! We further thank all our local contributors who make this local magazine possible.
Have a great October!

Earning some money on the side is always welcome, and opportunities to do this are multiplying as the rising cost of living drains vital dollars from households.
If you have an asset or skill that someone else may want, it’s likely you can make money from it as technology helps to produce a growing range of platforms that help people profit.
Airbnb and Uber were the big guns at the beginning, but today people are sharing their cars, caravans, boats, parking spaces and clothes, or offering services such as pet minding, freelance work, handyman jobs, administration and IT.
Most of these side hustle options don’t charge upfront fees, instead taking a percentage of
the income from platform users, making them a cheap way to generate extra cash.
Here are some examples of local opportunities where you can work with already established local platforms and make it your side hustle, earning $100 to $250 per week.

reating something out of recycled materials is a skill that local artist Kaye Watts has honed
Born in Sydney, Kaye’s passion for creativity blossomed at a young age. After seeing an ad in the paper at 15, Kaye got her first job as a cell painter before working her way up to become an animator/ cartoonist. Throughout her career as an animator, Kaye has travelled the world and has worked with companies like Disney and Hanna & Barbera. For over 40 years, she helped create countless animations like Scooby Doo, Goof Troop and Aladdin: Return of
After things went digital, Kaye decided to put down her pencil and try her hand at something else - dollmaking
“Around 10 years ago I was working for an advertising company, Cutting Edge doing commercials for TV. After the last project I worked on, I remember the Director saying
for the next job you’ll have to go digital and put away the pencil and paper.
“So, after that, I decided to retired from animation because for me it has to be tactile. I can’t do computers,” laughed Kaye.
“That is how Elkavaar was created. The name Elkavaar holds a special place in my heart. I originally came up with the name in honour of my son, Elliott. It is a combination of mine and my son’s name (Elliott & Kaye), Elka and the Norse word for beloved, Var, as my son always said he was a Viking in a previous life.”
“Whether I’m at home or doing different things, I have to be creative. I specialise in a range of different mediums including glasswork, textiles and illustration. I make stained glass leadlights, recycled pieces, upcycled jackets and bags, jewellery as well as art work to order.”
“I create art from the things I have collected over the years – from fabrics to everything vintage. I have a lot of buttons, jewels, beads and fabric, so I decided to start using all the scraps I had accumulated over the years.”
Currently, Kaye has been creating a range of custom dolls. No doll is the same and each has its unique personality.
“I don’t go out and buy new fabric, I just use what I’ve got. Everything is made from scrap and recycled materials – it's all-vintage scrap along with my button and doily collection. I also take apart jewellery and use pieces of old plates or teacups to create something new! I can’t resist the urge to create.”
When asked if she had any advice for other budding artists, Kaye divulged, “You need to enjoy the making process, long hours of perfecting your craft and style and spending time with yourself. Make your artwork for you, otherwise what’s the point? Make artworks that get you excited and if other people like them, that’s a bonus.”
To get one of your own custom Elkavaar creations, whether it’s a doll, jewellery, or glass work call Kaye on 04434 254 282. You can keep up to date by following Kaye’s latest creations on her Facebook or Instagram @Elkavaar.
The suburb Shailer Park is named for the Shailer family, who were very prominent from the early days of Logan, arriving in 1866. They were farmers, and grew cotton (very profitable during the American Civil War, when the production from the cotton farms in the Southern States was drastically reduced, but was eventually deemed to be unviable) and then sugar, but they are best known for their descendants having the first citrus orchard in southern Queensland. Francis Shailer became the first Clerk of the Tingalpa Divisional Board in 1880. His grandson, Glen Shailer, was elected Mayor of Logan in 1982, after having served almost continuously on the Albert Shire Council since 1961.
Trinder Park was named after Arthur Trinder, who was a much later resident of Logan, arriving in 1948. He bought land, subdivided it and built houses which he rented out at very
reasonable rates. He donated land for the local Scout Group and the Lutheran Church. He owned a hardware store in Station Road and donated the building to the Subnormal Children’s Association (as it was then called) in 1972. In 1978 they established the Keystone Activity Centre there, now known for its services for people with disabilities. Trinder Park Rest Home was also built largely through Arthur’s generosity.
Woodridge Railway Station was not built until the early 1960s, and in 1968, the Railway Department decided to build another station north of the Woodridge one, and named it Trinder Park, because of the prominence of the Trinder family..

There are a few misconceptions when it comes to the Australian divorce process. It may be from watching the portrayal of divorce scenarios on American television shows that leads us to believe that divorce, parenting, and property settlements are all one process. However, the Australian divorce process is more straightforward than that.
The most common misconceptions are as follows:
• A divorce is the same as a property settlement
• You need to deal with a property settlement at the same time as your divorce
• You need to be living in a separate house to your spouse prior to divorce.
The process of a divorce in Australia involves filing with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, proving that yourself and your spouse are actually “separated” and that you have been for at least 12 months and then, depending on no objections from your spouse, considered to be made final.
had the financial means to do so and instead slept in a different room in the house. This would be considered as “separated under the same roof” where your divorce may still be considered by the court.
Once your divorce is finalised, you then have 12 months to begin property proceedings in court. You can begin property proceedings prior to being divorced, however, divorce and the property settlement are still two completely different processes.
At Madsen Law, we can help you navigate these processes and help you decide what is best needs to pursue first for your circumstances. We understand it is a stressful time and you have lots to consider. It is at this time, that most people need an experienced legal professional to give understandable advice that you can trust.
This is when Madsen Law can help.
Article by Lili Halliwell LLB Solicitor at Madsen LawThe concept of being “separated” from your spouse may be proven by many different factors, such as, not appearing as a couple at social events; not having dinner or engaging in activities together, or not portraying to third parties that you are still a couple. It does not necessarily mean that you need to have lived in a separate house from your spouse for 12 months prior to filing in court. You may have not 3209 Pacific Hwy, Mon - Fri from 8:30am - 5pm

oving to a new country is exciting and scary, a world of opportunity lies ahead along with a few challenges.
When local business owners, Gemma and Leo first migrated to Australia to study, they had to navigate a new county and customs. Originally from China, the couple met at UQ, where they were both doing a postgraduate degree in
“Initially, I studied in New Zealand when I was 16. I ended up finishing high school there before coming to Brisbane to do my bachelor's degree in business (Hotel and event manage ment) at Griffith University” stated Gemma.
“It was like fate that we met. If we hadn’t travelled to Australia, we probably wouldn’t have met each other. Leo's home town is Dandong, a town near the border of North Korea and I’m originally from Guang Zhou which is near Hong
“As there is no direct flight, travelling to his hometown from my hometown takes even longer than flying direct from my hometown to Brisbane.”
After meeting as international students, little did they know they would fall in love with the country, they now call home.
“After graduating, we loved Australia so much we decided to stay by applying for the skilled migration visa,” stated Gemma.
“Leo worked in multiple industries such as car sales and real estate; while I was an accoun tant, however, I didn't enjoy the work very much. So, we decided to take a chance and try something completely different, drawing upon our love of food we decided to open a restaurant.”
Discover what Gemma and Leo had to say on the next page about running a successful business and balancing family life.
Why did you choose to become a part of a franchise (Little Red Dumplings)?
As the restaurant industry is absolutely brand new to us. While we had worked in the hospitality industry before (first jobs), owning a restaurant is entirely new. So being a part of a franchise was easier for us. We are very grateful for the support from our franchisee who is also our good friend and neighbour for many years.
What are your thoughts on living and running a business in Logan?
The people in Logan are very nice and friendly. Many of them have become friends with us over the years. We opened in December 2019, just before the start of the pandemic, we would not survive without the support from our cus tomers and the government.
What drew you to the Logan area?
We live on the south side of Brisbane and found that Chatswood Central Shopping Centre is a very convenient location; close to M1 and
only a 10-15 minute drive from where we live. Leo also used to work nearby and realised there was an opportunity in the market as he couldn't find many Chinese restaurants around.
How do you provide the right mix/balance between family & running a business?
We have two young children, who are in Prep and Grade 1. It is challenging to balance between family and business, especially with a restaurant. When the kids are home it's usually our most busy time at the restaurant. We take turns to work and look after the kids.
I (Gemma) am usually the one who stays home with them so going to work becomes a kind of rest for me. I think it works the opposite for Leo. He loves to be with the kids too. Though he couldn't be home most of the evenings to have dinner with them, he will try his best to attend all their school activities and spend time with them whenever possible. For example, he will be a parent volunteer on an excursion, sports day and swimming classes, etc. The good thing about running a business is flexibility, we just make the most of it to suit our family schedule.
What is the trick to running a successful family business?
Be available and flexible as much as possible. Unexpected things can happen at any time. We just have to work around and be wherever needed. Support each other with extra patience and a grateful heart.
On the other hand, we are very blessed to have so many good, reliable staff at the restaurant as well as help from our mums and even good friends or neighbours if the kids need to be minded.
What are some of the challenges of running a successful business?
For a lot of restaurant businesses, it is easy to have a great start. However, keeping up the high standard doesn't come naturally. It requires a lot of attention to every detail and aspect. From the taste, presentation, the fresh ness of food, service provided and training that is given to the staff as well as the atmosphere, maintenance and cleanliness of the environment.
For us, there is still space for improvement. Running a restaurant business can get chal lenging and tiring easily, that's why we think it's important to keep enthusiastic, be creative and persevere.
What is your most popular dish and what would you recommend people try when they visit?
A lot of new customers think we just sell dumplings. Although we do have a large variety of dumplings with different fillings and cooking methods, I don't think they are the tastiest options on our menu.
Try out the entrees and noodles and you will be surprised with simple but delicious cuisines from different parts of China. The cumin-fla voured lamb ribs, wasabi prawns, chicken in red chilli sauce, braised beef noodle soup and cold noodle salad are all very popular. On top of that, we also have bubble teas and a variety of freshly made drinks that are not to be missed.
While we are not working, our staff and customers still find us eating at Little Red Dumpling. Occasionally we bring our family and friends along as well. We do wonder when we will be tired of dining at our restaurant. However, so far it hasn’t happened yet!

After months of searching, you’ve found your dream home, and you’re ready to make an offer!
It’s an exciting time but are you as prepared as you can be to make an offer?
Understanding the offer process could be the difference between a stressful experience and a joyful one. So, to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, it’s worth getting all your ducks in a row.
Ideally, it is best to have a pre-approval in place from your chosen lender before you even start seriously looking for a property. This will help you understand your financial position so you can make sure you are working within a realistic budget.
You do not have to have a building and pest inspection when you buy a property, but it is an excellent idea. Building and pest inspections will ensure that the property is up to code, there are no pest problems, and no potential building issues are brewing.
Consider what other conditions you might like to include
Making an offer isn’t just about the price. You also have the right to include conditions. This is called a conditional offer. It is common to include conditions such as finance approval, the completion of relevant inspections, any maintenance you’d like completed before settlement or chattels you’d like included.
H O W T O U N D E R S T A N D T H E R E C E N T R A T E R I S E SEngage a conveyancer early
Kylie Morris and Sharnelle James Elders Shailer ParkA conveyancer doesn’t just do the paperwork. They are there to help you navigate your rights and responsibilities as a property purchaser.
Your conveyancer can also help with this. The contract of sale sets out the terms and conditions of the sale, including the vendor’s conditions.
When deciding how much to offer for a property, you will need to decide what your financial limit is. Make sure you consider the costs of buying a property aside from the purchase price. This includes stamp duty, moving costs, legal fees and any renovation work you want to undertake.

After the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II last month in September, the world united to pay their respects and remember the UK’s longest-serving monarch. Honouring Queen Elizabeth’s years of service and dedication to the Crown, her country, her people and the Commonwealth.
For many of us in Australia, she is the only monarch we have known in our lifetime. She has always been there and has been a true constant in our lives. However, as the world unites to pay tribute to the late Queen’s legacy, it’s a chance for Australians to reflect on what the Queen meant to them.
We asked the local community and here are some of the responses we got.
Very sad because she was a wonderful old girl, and a link to the WW2 generation, my parent’s generation, which is now passing away. On the other hand, on a personal level, dying at 96, still in full possession of all your marbles and having been still working up until two days before your death, is more of a triumph than a tragedy.
The Queen was an amazing woman and a beautiful soul. Britain’s longest reigning monarch, she had extensive history to her name and served an amazing life. She lived a life of service to her people and was simply one lovely woman. RIP Queen
Ella, RochedaleAlthough I watched very little of the proceedings around the procession, I have come away moved and inspired. The love and loyalty of the British people to their late Queen is not only touching but brings back my own best memories of Britain (and Scotland). I feel that so long as British people keep this animating spirit alive, they will have little to fear. It speaks to Queen Elizabeth’s character that just two days before her death, she was up and appointing a new government. It also speaks to the role of her office that this gives a sheen of legitimacy to one more of a series of oft-piratical premierships. I can only say, I’m happy she was there, and I do hope the new British PM lives up to the expectation placed upon her. I already had a good opinion of Prince Charles, so there’s little to say there except he lived up to it.
I’m sad and I filled up with tears when the news broke. She’s the only monarch I’ve ever known. She had a grace about her. She was loved by so many people all over the world. People say she was rich and undeserving of her title but she was OUR Queen and she devoted her life to her duties and served her people. May she rest in peace and long live King Charles III.
I do not think about British royalty much, but I admit I am a little sad about her death. I do not like the idea of monarchy unless I get to be queen, but for real I think she was a good queen and a good person. I think she is probably having tea with Betty White. Poka Poka!
I have developed an especially soft spot in my heart for this little woman in the bright outfits and the funny hats. She has to be one of the most dedicated, dutiful, intelligent, wise and strongwilled monarchs ever to grace the face of the earth.
Well, no matter how you feel about her or the monarchy, there’s no denying that it’s the end of an era. After all, for everyone under 75 or so, she’s the only monarch we’ve ever known. Her death marks the end of a long and full chapter in the royal family’s history.
Like cheetahs to their prey so are people to their passion. However, passion in itself is not the end, it’s the beginning… and it means the chase is on!
People write poetry like cheetahs hunt prey. The prey is a person’s ideas, the cheetah is the power of the pen, and the poem is the passion. Passion for adventure and exploring the world and beyond! Passion for love and romance and things of the heart! Passion for truth and justice and all things honourable! These are the ideas that stir people’s thoughts like the wind through the trees; and assuredly, pens turn perceptions to poetry, recording the intriguing, the hilarious, the weird, the clever, the calm, the simple and the surprising.
Yearning to record, reveal and relate their vibrant ideas to an awaiting audience, we enjoy
using the tool of poetry because we can use it so freely. Far from the confines of conventional writing, poetry writing has no rules, no bounds, no limits! Our thoughts, unleashed, can run wildly yet meaningfully across the paper. So, release the restless heart, ignite the inspired mind, fire-up the feelings, and release your ideas into a poem! Certainly, it’s an excellent productive platform for your performance.
An artist yearns to paint, a musician yearns to compose, an author yearns to write stories, a film director yearns to create scenes, while the poet and the song writer yearn to play with words… instantly and powerfully bringing zeal to reality… luring readers and listeners into unique and intimate realms of treasure.
So, grab pen and paper, pursue your perfect prey! The chase is on!

Helping each student to successfully prepare for the workforce of the future is very much part of the DNA of Kimberley College located at Carbrook. Embedded in the school mission is the desire to help students find both their purpose and passion.
One way Kimberley College is achieving this, is by providing a variety of pathways for senior students. Principal, Glenn Johnson said “It is essential to cater for a wide variety of career ambitions and to support our students with the appropriate study courses, apprenticeships, and work experience”. For students seeking tertiary studies, the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) pathway is recommended with previous College graduates successfully completing degrees across all disciplines from law to biotechnology.
Kimberley College however, recognises that this option is not necessarily the right fit for everyone. “More and more students are looking to commence vocational studies, apprenticeships, and traineeships and to be able to jump start their career and gain valuable experience while still at school,” said Principal Glenn Johnson.
Namatjira is the College’s Vocational Education & Training (VET) Faculty and currently has more than 100 senior students across year 11 and 12 enrolled in the TAFE at School program in 2022. Students are choosing to study a range of vocational based courses from nursing and hairdressing to electrotechnology and boiler making.
Year 10 at the College provides an initial 10-week taster program for those students
interested in a career in the trades followed by Year 11 and the opportunity to undertake foundation studies and complete a Certificate II. This is complimented with a school-based apprenticeship in Year 12 where students spend one day per week off site at an employer, undertaking practical, hands-on experiences, an opportunity in the real world that the classroom is simply unable to replicate.
Kimberley College, Year 12 student, Mackaylie Taylor has been busy baking up a storm since commencing her school-based apprenticeship in March this year at Mt Cotton Sourdough Bakeries. Each Friday Mackaylie steps away from the classroom and is onsite at the bakery at 4.00am. Currently she is working on the patisserie line and is making everything from apple pies to lemon curd tarts.
Mackaylie completed a Certificate II in Baking at South Bank TAFE last year before applying for a school-based apprenticeship. While the typical apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete, Mackaylie is pleased she was able to get a head start by combining her senior studies at Kimberley College with a schoolbased apprenticeship saving six months and reducing her post school apprenticeship period. Mackaylie is looking forward to continuing her role on the patisserie line in a full-time capacity this year when she formally finishes Year 12 in November.
Kimberley College also offers a Diploma of Business with a local RTO that is delivered onsite at the school. This year, close to 20 Year 12 students successfully graduated with this award in addition to completing their QLD Certificate of Education (QCE). These students also have the added bonus of leveraging their Diploma of Business and may be to apply for direct entry into select courses on offer at QUT and Griffith universities.
For further information about finding the right path for your child please email enrolments@ kimberley.college or come along to the Open Day on Saturday 15 October. Registrations via the website www.kimberley.college

They're our most precious and most vulnerable cargo and if our children aren't strapped into their car seats correctly, their lives are at serious risk.
A hard-hitting report published by Dr Alexia Lennon demonstrates that the leading cause of death and serious injury in children under 15 years of age in Australia results from road trauma.
Choosing a car seat can be a complicated and stressful task for new parents. With so many car seats on the market, picking the right one can be overwhelming. You need to pick the correct size, orientation and style for your child and the size of your car.
In Queensland, the law provides a minimum requirement regarding the use of child restraints:
• Babies up to 6 months must be in a rearfacing car seat
• Children 6 months to 4 years may be in a rear-facing or forward-facing car seat with a harness
• Children between the ages of 4 and 7 may be in a forward-facing car seat with a harness or a booster seat
• Children over the age of 7 can stay in their car seat or booster if they still fit or sit without a car seat/booster
• If the child is too large to fit into a car seat specified for their age, you may move your child into the next level of restraint
The Importance of getting your child’s care seat fitted correctly
Whilst the law defines a minimum requirement based on age, car seat manufacturers actually design and build car seats according to the current Australian Standards AS/NZS 1754.
Any car seat that you buy for your child should show an Australian Standards sticker showing the AS/NZS 1754 code. The use of internationally designed car seats should not be used in Australia.
Manufacturers stipulate in their instructions to use car seats based on the child’s size/ height rather than their age. Most new car seats lean more towards best practice and it is very important to use the seat based on the height markers in the seat rather than just the minimum stipulation of the law.
If you are using an older second-hand seat, they may be based on the previous Australian Standards, so always refer to the instruction manual for the seat or the stickers on the seat.
Many leading experts in the field including Hire for Baby, Kidsafe and ACRI (Australian Child Restraint Resource Initiative) highly encourage choosing and using car seats that lean more towards best practice, for example:
• Keep babies in a rearward facing position as long as possible based on the height markers of the seat (look at the extended rear facing seats)
• Always use a seat based on the height markers of the seat rather than just relying on the age of the child
• Keep toddlers and growing children in a full harness as long as possible (look at seats that keep a child harnessed to approx. 8 years)
• Keep a child in a booster seat as long as
possible, preferably until they are at least 145cm tall
• Don’t be tempted to move your child into the next car seat type too quickly, even if the law which is age-based allows it
• Keep children under the age of 12 in the back seat unless all back seats are occupied with other younger children.
Now that you’ve picked the right car seat for you, your child and your car, you might think about getting your car seat installed by a professional. They will show you through the features of the seat, how to install and adjust the seat and offer safety tips, like making sure that the straps are never twisted, tangled or too tight/loose. They can also check seats that you have installed yourself, to put your mind at ease that the seat is installed correctly. If having a go at the installation yourself always refer to the instruction manual provided with the seat.
Research shows that a correctly fitted car seat can significantly reduce the risk of an injury in a road accident by up to 70% and help to prevent many fatalities – so it is important to make sure car seats are installed and adjusted correctly to keep your precious cargo safe on the road.

It is all about the Systems - Your Habits.
According to leading management thinker W.Edwards Deming, 94% of most problems and possible improvements belong to the systems we have. A business system is a documented procedure (habit) that outlines how we do business. That can be just a checklist, step by step picture, or in many cases, a habit we follow.
1. Simplify, Simplify, Simplify. We know people are getting overwhelmed with the amount of work they must do. They are getting buried in the number of emails and tasks or, as a business owner, spending time on the paperwork and phone calls. These tasks and systems affect our productivity and, of course, our bottom line. Yet, we forget to make systems simple – set priorities, focus on the critical, and, where ever possible, automate to simplify.
2. Your business systems start with knowing you’re ‘Why.’ Your ‘Why’ is your starting point for your business plan, your brand, and your systems. It is all about building a model /guide of consistent business image and expectation that supports your focus.
3. Don’t block yourself with your own mindset of “I am not good at that(system)”; it is often your habit, not your skill. As with culture, sometimes we just let habits create themselves. So why not go back to the drawing board and decide what habits/ systems are working for you and which are not?
4. Creating a flow chart, customer journey or map is the next step in identifying your processes and where you can automate those processes.
5. Track your processes, identify measurements of success, and identify when and what the emergency crisis points are. Have clear communication channels and signals for when your flow becomes blocked. Use a matrix or rating, e.g., low stock levels or urgent stock levels, funnel targets, and customer delivery times.
6. Work on your business, not just in it! Reviewing and making a shift in how you work will lead to a more productive and profitable business. Build a business that operates consistently, is profitable, and builds on selfsufficient system. Systems help you scale more quickly, identify problems, support staff, make your business more salable, as well they support your consistent delivery and customer services expectation and experience.
7. Don’t set and forget.

Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics opened its doors to the Beenleigh public in June of this year.
Following a long successful career providing lower limb health services to some of the UK and Australia’s most disadvantaged populations, Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics Director Matthew has gone about putting together a blueprint for the provision of exceptional lower limb health care.
“
The past fifteen years have seen a lot happen in the form of technological improvement for the assessment and management of lower limb health care and Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics is pleased to showcase this advanced technology to the town of Beenleigh.
”
Clinics offering in-shoe pressure assessments, 3D gait/running assessments and Shockwave Therapy exist in Brisbane and the surrounding suburbs, but you will be hard-pressed to find clinics close to Beenleigh with all these solutions.
Radial pressure (RPW shockwave) therapy is an excellent treatment option for trigger point muscle pain in areas like the calf and iliotibial band (ITB) strains. It works by sending pulse waves through trigger points to elicit an immediate break down of muscle fibre bands causing pain and mobility restriction.
RPW is also effective in the management of chronic tendinopathies of the Achilles and plantar fascia (cause of heel pain). It is especially useful for those long-standing conditions that traditional therapies such as orthotics, footwear change and exercise therapy have failed to resolve.
RPW therapy is also currently being used for the management of chronic hip and knee pain secondary to osteoarthritis and gluteal muscle weakness. Diabetes is a condition that Beenleigh knows all about, with the prevalence of diabetes in Beenleigh estimated to be around 7% according to a primary health network (PHN) report from 2018.
The three-year risk of foot ulceration from diabetes is about 5.1% even if individuals have no other complications detected at their diabetic foot assessments, such as foot deformity or lack of feeling (otherwise known as peripheral neuropathy).
This risk of ulceration from diabetes can be as high as 18.8% when these risk factors are detected during diabetic foot assessments, so it is imperative that these issues are detected early and the condition is well managed.
Knowing this information and educating people with diabetes on this information, the importance of podiatry screening for risk factors of diabetic foot disease becomes very clear.
Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics uses a Medilogic in-shoe pressure assessment tool to detect areas of the foot that are most at risk of diabetic foot disease and ulceration.
Pinpoint precision sensors are used in clients’ shoes to educate them on the areas of potential danger to their feet, and the improvements in dangerous pressures following footwear change and use of custom foot orthosis.
The same assessment technology is also used to help runners improve their technique and show recreational gym users how their stance during training can contribute to the cause of lower limb pain. It isn’t just diabetic foot complications that podiatrists are experts in, but any issues related to poor movement or pain affecting your feet, ankles and knees hips can be better managed following a full body 3D movement assessment.
The same Medilogic assessment technology is also used to help runners improve their technique and show recreational gym users how their stance during training can contribute to the cause of lower limb pain.
Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics helps children, teenagers, adults and older aged persons with a range of lower limb health, movement and pain management strategies to keep them moving and feeling better.
Moving Forward Podiatry & Orthotics Beenleigh welcomes clients on EPC referrals, DVA referrals and NDIS plans as well as private clients.
You do not need a referral to access our service, but individuals accessing a care plan or supports via a NDIS plan should consult with their GP or support coordinator prior to making an appointment.
Our motto: Healthier Feet, Healthier You –Better Systems, Better Care, Because You Matter!
Moving Forward Podiatry provides a client-centred approach to care. We listen to your concerns, help to identify your goals, and proceed with your preferred treatment options. We move forward with you and if your goals change, then our plan will change to meet them.

Last month we took you along a journey to the beautiful Tweed Valley, now we are showcasing the Coast.
Come along and enjoy the surf, sun and sand – but minus the crowds of other popular coastal hamlets surrounding Kingscliff.
Kingscliff is the quintessential North Coast NSW beach holiday destination. Just south of the Queensland border, this sleepy village in The Tweed has a string of blissful beaches, from Fingal Head near the mouth of the Tweed River all the way south to Cabarita Beach, known for its reliably good waves.
This part of the Tweed is a magnet for water sports enthusiasts, drawn here to swim, surf, snorkel (green sea turtles are a highlight), sail along the Tweed River – and spot whales, which migrate up and down the coastline from May through to November.
There’s no need to venture far from main Kingscliff Beach, which curves from the breakwater at Cudgen Headland in the south (where the Cudgen Creek flows into the ocean) to Dreamtime Beach at Fingal Head, in the north.
The diverse conditions across the long stretch allow for calm waters in estuaries – ideal for
young kids, kayaking and paddleboarding – as well as world-class breaks at the beach, including Cudgen’s legendary right-hander.
Back on dry land, there is plenty to do, from taking part in a leisurely bike ride, to enjoying the delicious local produce and regional delicacies to exploring the local markets and boutiques.
One shop you can miss out on visiting is Meraki Blu Boutique & Homewares. Located in the Peppers Salt Resort & Spa, on Bells Blvd, Meraki Blu opened in August 2019. Rochedale South has come a long way from its farming roots, officially gazetted in July 1979 and lies to the south of Priestdale Road.
Named after the homestead built by the Roche family who settled in the area in 1868, their property stretched from the current Rochedale State School, north to Ford Road and east to Priest Gully. They also owned the site of Redeemer College. Originally, the family grew grapes and citrus on their property, before transitioning over to small-crop farming after World War I. In the 1930s, the family moved into dairying.
In the mid-1960s, the region began to be subdivided for housing. More people began to move into the area. In 1970, Strathlands Shopping Centre opened and construction for St Peter's Catholic School began in 1976. As the population grew, more schools opened including Rochedale South State School in 1979 and Redeemer Lutheran College in 1980. The Rochedale State High School followed 3 years later, opening in 1983.
Today, Rochedale South is one of the fastest growing tight-knit community recording over 33% growth in real estate value over the past 3 years. Rochedale South is home to 15,317 people (according to the 2016 Census). Here is a selection of local businesses that make up the Rochedale South community.
Opened in 2017, F45 Training Rochedale South is located in Rochedale Shopping Village and has formed a tight knight community, renowned for its welcoming, supportive atmosphere, friendly staff as well as fantastic equipment.

What a journey the plates have been on so far, travelling to over 13 businesses in the past six months! Since our last update in August, the plates have changed hands a few times. So, we thought we’d keep you up to date on how ‘Where the Plate’ is travelling.
The original plate was passed from Martin and his team at The Local Fisho in Loganholme onto Louis from Mosaic Pizza in Shailer Park, along with a beautiful seafood platter.
The second plate, launched in August, has continued on its journey thanks to Tina from Helloworld Travel in Rochedale, who shared it with Racheal from AURA SKIN in Rochedale along with a beautiful Ladies Long Weekend goodie bag.
“I chose to pass on the plate to Rachael from Aura Skin in Rochedale because although our businesses are quite close, I haven’t yet
had the chance to visit her gorgeous space”, explained Tina, “I did walk out of there with an appointment for later this month - I’m excited!”
Aura Skin specialises in skin, beauty and cosmetic tattooing services, aiming to combine the best in clinical treatments with a sense of nurturing and relaxation. From there, Rachael shared the plate with a local hairdresser, Steph from Hygge Hair in Rochedale South.
Rachael shared on facebook, “Today I visited Steph from Hygge Hair Salon to pass on the Qld Guides ‘Pass the Plate’ and gift her with a little AURA SKIN goodie bag.”
“Although we hadn’t had the chance to properly meet yet, I had heard so many wonderful things about Steph and Shelley. Along with the rave reviews from clients, Hygge Hair is a sustain able salon, reducing and repurposing salon waste. Over to you Steph!”
Where will the plate go next? Stay tuned for the next destination. We also encourage readers to check out the hashtag #whereistheplatelcg and like or follow the participating businesses or stop by for a visit.
You can also follow the journey on the QLD Guides Facebook page, @qldguides.

They say believe half of what you hear and I think I only heard half of what was said when my Son told me to quit a job I hated and
“It’s Ok, I will help you.” He told me. Did I mention he lives in another state? I searched Gumtree and Marketplace, taste tested coffee and studied. The hardest part was finding a place.
I’ve lived in Rochedale South forever and some thing made me go there one day and there was a $10 note stuck to the fence. Was this a sign? May be! I believe in signs and that everything happens for a reason, I have to for my own sanity!
So, we established that I am slightly insane and strangely after three years still serving coffee. The real reason I open every day is because of the great people who live in our community and love to meet at the cafe. Like our Mahjong group that meet and play most Friday mornings.
In Closing, be open for anything and don’t underestimate what you are capable of.
Moonlight Bandit Café owner, Laura was nominated by her friend Alyson for the IGA community award due to the love and time she devotes to the community.
“I nominated Laura because she has supported me not only with my small business ‘Norma May Honey’, by stocking us at her café, but she also supported me as a friend. Her friendship, guidance and support are something I deeply treasure. She is a rare soul who deserves to be celebrated” commented Alyson.
Laura runs multiple community days, donates to community organisations including the Fishers of Men and will do anything for anyone who needs a hand. She has also run a raffle to help save the bees of NSW. Laura! OF
Over the years, we’ve seen the demand for all things artisanal and hand-crafted sky rocket and as a heatwave spreads across the country this period what better time to turn a spotlight on Australia’s flourishing craft beer sector than now.
The changing tastes of consumers is one of the main reasons behind this growth. Beer drinkers (and even non-regular beer drinkers) are drawn to the idea of their beverage being “handcrafted” and produced using only highquality ingredients. The switch to healthy living is also a driving factor. As Australians have begun to moderate their eating and drinking habits, they have started looking for low-carb and gluten-free drink options.
The use of beer in Australia has a long history, having served as a staple aboard the HMS Endeavour that brought Captain Cook to Australia’s shores.
Beer is purported to have originally been used to preserve drinking water and to keep scurvy at bay. Fast forward a few years and – while beer likely was brewed by many – the first recognised brewer was former convict John Boston, who used a variety of Cape gooseberry leaves and Indian corn to brew the first local beer.
We were beer drinkers before we were brewers Blackflag is a collective of misfits who strongly believe in bringing good beer to the while having a damn good time doing
We take the idea of community engagement to our very core everything we do & present to the of our arses off to make the best for the collective.

Want fluffy Japanese pancakes but can’t fly to Tokyo? This recipe is for you. Soufflé pancakes are fluffy, jiggly, sweet, soft, and so, so delicious. They taste like you are eating a sweet pancake cloud, with butter and syrup!
Serves 2 | Prep 15m | Cook 15m
Ingredients
Yolks:
2 egg yolk 18g
2 tbsp sugar 12g
4 tbsp milk 30g
6 tbsp flour 30g
0.5 tsp baking powder
Whites:
4 large egg whites 60g
0.25 tsp cream of tartar
3 tbsp sugar 18g
1. Whisk the egg yolk with the sugar until pale and frothy. Mix the milk in batches. Sift the flour and baking powder over the yolk mixture and whisk well making sure everything is incorporated.
2. Whip the egg whites with the cream of tartar until frothy and pale, adding in the sugar in bit at a time until the whites are whipped into a glossy thick meringue that holds a peak. Be careful not to over whip.
3. Take 1/3 of the whipped egg whites and whisk it into the bowl with the yolks until completely incorporated. Add half of the remaining whites and whisk into the yolk batter, being careful not to deflate. Transfer the egg yolk mixture to the remaining egg whites, whisk and then use a spatula to fold together.
4. Heat up a large non stick frying (with a lid) pan over low heat. Very lightly brush with oil and use a paper towel to rub it around. You want a very light film. Using an ice cream scoop or measuring cup, scoop the batter onto the pan. Cover and cook for 4-5 minutes.
5. Remove the lid and add some more batter on top of each pancake. Cover and continue to cook for 4-5 more minutes. Lift the lid and use a spatula to gently peek under the pancake. The pancake should release easily – don’t force it.
6. Once the pancakes are golden and cooked through, gently remove and serve on a plate with powdered sugar, butter, whipped cream, and maple syrup. Enjoy immediately!

Thang Sian Tuang (Sian) was born in Myanmar and came to Australia as a refugee from Malaysia in 2019 with his young family.
Sian worked a seasonal job on a blueberry farm but struggled to find sustainable full-time work because of his English skills and the outbreak of covid across Australia affecting his employment search. Fortunately things took a big turn for the better this year when a friend suggested he contact MultiLink Community Services about their Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs.
Sian made contact with MultiLink and decided to join the Cert. II Supply Chain Operations course in February at Slacks Creek. Through this 7-week course he was able to graduate in April with the Certificate II, along with a Forklift Licence, a Dangerous Goods ticket and his First Aid qualification.
Then through the help of MultiLink’s SQW Facilitator
Sian was offered a trial with a local Security Screen company, Securelux. Sian’s first language is Zomi a Burmese dialect. To help get Sian up and running in his new job, MultiLink engaged the service of a
language support person to be with Sian for his first couple of days at Securelux. Through this support he quickly picked up on the skills required for the job.
Securelux were fabulous in understanding of the language barriers and the need to adapt their training methods to suit. These adaptions came in various forms with ideas such as the training being more of a visual procedure; “Watch, now you try it”. This worked for Sian and he is now busy putting security screens into the frames of doors and using a variety of tools in the warehouse. Sian has passed his probation period and now working as a full-time employee.
After 5 months Sian said, “with thumbs up”, he is loving his new job! Securelux manager Daniel Roberts said, “Sian was pretty quiet to begin with, but he has been coming out of his shell more and more each week…. He is a hard worker and willing to learn, that’s all we can ask…. I wish I had another 10 of him.”
MultiLink Community Service are based in Logan Central and have been running successful training and employment programs in warehousing, hospitality, automotive and aged care for the past 5 years. You may be thinking a lot about the future and where you have gone wrong in the past. Release any memories that have kept you in a pessimistic loop, as they will block your ability to see what truly matters in the present moment.
New ideas about love, collaboration, and what you want in a partner could cause disruptions to your existing relationships. As things get rocky, your impatience may lead you on a search for deeper meaning as to why things are currently disconnected.
You and your spouse will have issues because of your financial situation. Your finances will be average this month. Your career will also experience some challenges that will derail your growth and progress.
Health prospects for this month are excellent. You will be in a position to nurture both your personal and professional relationships. The stars are aligned in your favour; therefore, this will be a good time for you as a Taurus woman to fall in love.
Gemini natives will have a problem making decisions that concern love matters. They are still not ready to find that person that fills their heart. Health prospects are great. Studies will go on well so long as you remain committed and work hard to enable you to achieve your goals and aspirations.
This month you will have to take care of the elders in your family. Your children will suffer from minor illnesses. Though your health will be superb, you need to ensure that your loved ones also enjoy good health.
Your immune system will be compromised because you do not take good care of yourself. Ensure that you eat healthy meals and take lots of water. Educational prospects are perfect for students this month. You will also have great relationships with your co-workers at the workplace.

Creative people in the City of Logan are being urged to chase their artistic dreams.
Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct artistin-residence Dr Karen Lonsdale said many local creatives have great ideas but often don’t apply for available grants to bring them to life.
Dr Lonsdale encourages those who fall into that category to get involved in Logan City Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant program.
The singer and flautist will share her story alongside those of other successful former RADF grant recipients at a special event in October.
The RADF Showcase and Round 50 launch is between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, October 1 at the KBF Cultural Precinct.
Anyone interested in seeking funding for their next creative arts project is invited to attend.
Dr Lonsdale will perform her solo flute piece After the Rain.
She said RADF funding had helped her further develop as an independent performing artist and educator.
Dr Lonsdale took part in a series of professional development sessions in jazz singing and accompanying, composition, arranging and recorder playing as well as business marketing and promotion strategies with renowned Australian ensemble Topology as well as other specialists.
She has also created some short pieces for beginner to intermediate ensembles as well as a piece for a beginner concert band.
Dr Lonsdale said the RADF application process was straight-forward and applicants could receive feedback on their ideas before putting in a submission.
“Like any other grant, it is imperative to stick to the criteria when completing the application form,” she said.
City Lifestyle Chair, Councillor Laurie Koranski said the RADF Showcase would feature successful recipients and allow people to learn more about RADF.
“This program acts as a support mechanism for local creatives,” Cr Koranski said.
“They are our creative heart and soul and we are keen to support all art forms.”
Grants are available in the areas of dance, music, design, new media, visual arts, writing, theatre, performing arts, museum and cultural heritage.
Light refreshments will be available so bookings are essential and can be made online at logan. qld.gov.au/grants/regional-arts-developmentfund
Insights will also be given by the following presenters into their RADF supported projects:
• Lark Lee, who developed materials on a Korean-Australian mixed culture feature film Street No. 4. The trailer will screen at the showcase.
• Aaron Dora, from Opera Queensland, who completed a mentorship with Goat Track Theatre from Mt Tamborine.
• Louis Lim, who led and mentored local photographers to capture the street fashion style of City of Logan residents in the Snapshots exhibition currently on display at KBF.
RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
While many parents view art as a hobby for children, it can actually be essential to a child’s early education. Art helps support free play in children, allowing them unrestricted exploration and experimentation that are both fun and educational.
Creative activities encourage children to learn about the different shapes, colours and textures. Arts can also start their numeracy development by teaching them about basic counting and measuring in a fun way. As children describe their artworks and the
process behind it, they develop their language skills. You can encourage this at home by actively listening to them explain and asking open-ended questions. Use this time to teach them new vocabulary words that are related to their projects like texture and hue.
Cutting or tearing paper, holding a brush and colouring a canvas helps develop your child’s fine motor skills. Through art, your child is able to achieve different developmental milestones in a relaxed and fun environment. Drawing with the proper pencil grip at an early age will benefit them greatly when they are learning to write.
Children learn to express their ideas and imagination through art. It encourages them to experiment with unknown materials and use new methods and techniques to achieve their desired effect. This helps boost their self confidence and decision-making skills in the future. Art also allows children to learn and practice various skills like patterning and cause and effect, as well as critical thinking.
Remember, it is the experience of making and expressing that helps a child to thrive rather than creating a perfect product.
Arange of key policy positions to shape the City of Logan’s future growth were endorsed at a Logan City Council Special Meeting today (Tuesday, September 6).
The planning improvements will help deliver well-designed, liveable neighbourhoods and opportunities for future investment and jobs across a rapidly growing city.
The proposed changes will be captured in the new planning scheme, Logan Plan 2025, and aim to address matters raised by residents, businessowners and other stakeholders about current development outcomes.
They also take into account updated Queensland Government requirements and changing industry and community expectations.
Proposed positions for Logan Plan 2025 include:
• New subdivisions will need to offer diversity in design and block shapes with a stronger focus on sustainability and landscaping
• Key activity centres such as Springwood, Underwood and Holmview will be expanded to provide additional growth opportunities
• Clearer guidelines for service stations and places of worship in terms of location, size and impact on surrounding areas
• Improving how Council and the community protect our rich and diverse heritage, including that of our first nations’ peoples
Aligning the city’s flood risk management approach with updated requirements from the Queensland Government and the recommendations from the Floods Commission of Inquiry.
Mayor Darren Power described the proposals as a strong, contemporary approach that puts the City of Logan at the forefront of bestpractice planning and urban design.
“These proposed changes will ensure future development occurs in areas where it makes sense, and in ways that best serve our community’s needs and lifestyles,” Cr Power said.
Planning Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said the proposed changes reflect concerns raised by residents and other stakeholders, and present opportunities for better outcomes in our growing city.
He said it was important for Council to receive further input from the community to help fine-tune Logan Plan 2025.
“We know that good planning creates great outcomes, which is critical for the City of Logan’s future,” Cr Raven said.
“With the community’s feedback and support this will be a once in a generation opportunity to influence the design of our city for decades to come.”
The changes will now be written into draft policy, which will undergo legal review before being submitted to the Queensland Government for consideration.
That will be followed by formal and extensive community and stakeholder consultation, which will be an opportunity for the community to have a further say on the new planning scheme before it is submitted again to the Queensland Government for final approval.
State legislation requires local governments to review and refresh their planning schemes every 10 years. The City of Logan’s existing planning scheme commenced in 2015.
Summer is almost here and many of us are looking for the ultimate hacks to get beach-ready bodies. Knowing what to concentrate on and finding out what works for you is key to shedding weight, toning muscle and feeling good fast.
Regardless of what your summer-body goals are, here are some tips to help you shape up for summer.
Making big changes can be hard to maintain, with most people give up after a short amount of time. So, instead of trying to commit to large seemingly unachievable goals that place huge pressure on your body and mind, take it one step at a time. Opt for small changes designed to make a big impact. You don’t need to give up carbs forever – slow and steady lifestyle changes are generally easier to sustain over the long term.
Teaming up with someone else can be the perfect source of motivation. Finding the right personal trainer can help achieve results faster and keep you accountable. Find someone who motivates you. Whether it’s through positive
reinforcement or pushing you to your limits –you want their personality to work with yours to get the best results.
Its important to stay active on a regular basis is vital not just to achieve that beach bod but for general health and fitness as well. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight, maintain weight loss or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more. Reducing sitting time is important, too. The more hours you sit each day, the higher your risk of metabolic problems.
Exercising is only one side of the equation; good nutrition is fundamental for a beach-ready body. Nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, nuts, whole grains and avocado, help maximise the number of nutrients your body takes in and are loaded with healthy fats and essential min erals needed to operate at peak performance.
Doing the same thing every day, is a quick way to lose motivation. Whether you’re training at the gym, at home or both, mixing up workouts will encourage you to focus on different areas of your body and gain inspiration to keep working out. Be creative and create your own circuits to achieve the results you want. As long as there’s variety, the results and motivation will flow.

Despite the weather, locals were not de terred to turn out and support Logan’s very own literary talent at the annual Logan Writers Festival.
Held at the Logan Artist Association, the 2-day festival was a celebration of Logan writers and was a great opportunity for writers and readers to meet, share their love of writing, and connect with the incredible community we have in this diverse city. Over the 2 day event, there were 30 speakers booked, 45 exhibitors and a wealth of knowledge that will all help to make the starv ing artist a myth in Logan.
On Day 1 of the festival, the rain poured down in the morning and it looked like it might actually
rain all day but luckily it stopped by lunch time. On Day 2, the rain was back again.
Unfortunately, the rain kept a lot of people away however that did not dampen the spirits of the crowd. Some of the amazing authors that attended included Andrew Hood, Rhiannon D. Elton, Gillian Wells, Karen Thurecht and Locky from John Paul College.

Acar that’s well-oiled and serviced performs better and for longer. Just as we want our set of wheels free of mud, we like our windows crystal-clear as well. The way we approach solar panels should be no different. By keeping our solar panels at their best, we can expect that they will perform at their optimum, remain free of any safety hazards and ensure that they continue to provide energy to our homes or business for years to come.
Solar panels have become a great way to reduce your power bill and help the environment. They are certainly an investment worth having on your home. To ensure your solar panels are performing at their best, it’s always important to keep your solar panels clean.
But why do they need cleaning?
While solar panels in general usually require very little maintenance once they’re installed, as with any system, they do require a little TLC to keep them functioning at their best.
Over time, solar panels can collect debris, dust, dirt and bird droppings, etc. Solar panel energy production can be dramatically improved when your panels are cleaned and maintained regularly - saving you money and protecting your investment.
How often should I clean my solar panels? As a general rule, considering our harsh Australian climate, you want to aim to clean your solar panels at least every six months.
However, if we are experiencing extreme climate conditions such as fires, dust storms or excessive rainstorms, then you may need to clean your panels more often.
Ultimately, regular cleaning ensures you get the most return on your investment possible. However, to avoid accidentally damaging your solar panels, calling in a professional is a great idea. A professional can help keep your solar panels nice and clean and regular visits could extend the life of your solar panel system while ensuring you don’t void your warranty.

During Queen Elizabeth II's reign, Australia transformed from a country with a 'whites only' migration policy to one of vibrant multiculturalism. But what would be the attitudes towards the monarchy as Charles becomes king.
Australia has undergone immense change since The Queen Elizabeth II first toured the country in 1954 as a 27-year-old monarch. She was the first reigning UK monarch to visit and she was met with adulation. Majority of the population stepped out at least once during that time to try and catch a glimpse of her.
But the White Australia policy; legislation designed to keep Australia effectively British was also in play, meaning more people who lived here at the time had cultural ties to the British Isles.
Six decades on, mass immigration to Australia has changed the very fabric of who we are, and a push to have the significance of Australia's First Nations peoples enshrined into the constitution is gaining momentum.
Not only do Australian crowds look different today, and bring more variety when it comes to food and language, but their cultural background can influence how they think about having a British monarch as Australia's head of state.
Many believe Australia has already proven itself to be a mature nation that has relationships with the wider world and that a foreign head of state creates a disconnect.
Being a more mature country that has come of age, many believe we don’t need to have a figurehead of a different country as our head of state. We are old enough to be a republic, to have our own say and further deepen our own identity.
Multiculturalism is key to Australia’s identity. Multiculturalism really is something we are generating in our country ourselves and it's gone beyond just Commonwealth countries in Australia.
There are many non-Commonwealth citizens who come from other countries, so multiculturalism is far more important than just belonging to the Commonwealth.
But for those fleeing suffering under a corrupt republican system of government has led to interpret Australia having a British head of state as a representation of transparency and stability.
Australia, where the head of state isn’t a president, we have a governor-general who represents the Queen, so ultimately, it’s the Queen and she doesn’t get political. She doesn’t impose her political will — in fact, we barely know what her political will is because she barely talks about it.
Those who fled conflict from Europe, such as World War II, looked to the Queen as a beacon of hope.
In the many ethnic communities, you don't really hear much debate about whether we should remain a constitutional monarchy or whether Australia should become a republic.
When I was growing up, I spent so much time trying to be right by others. I tried so hard to damp myself down, to make myself quieter, smaller, to not talk so much or put my opinions forcefully.
I didn’t lose sleep berating myself for saying the wrong thing or for disagreeing when I should have just stayed quiet. But I was at times emotional and angry.
What this felt like was that I was just intrinsically, inescapably wrong and certainly not living up to expectations. I was made to fit in. I made hundreds of resolutions to stay within the boundaries which was not me.
It took me years to realise that this feeling of always being somehow wrong, was not exclusive to me. It may not be how all feel (I envy those who never have) but I do think it is much more common than we realise.
“
As a pastor's kid, it was hammered into us that we were meant to put other people first, to facilitate others to shine, not to shine ourselve
”
No matter how hard I tried, I could not subdue my natural exuberance. And regardless of
whether others punished me for it or not, I punished myself. But others did punish me for it, of course.
Eventually, in desperation after years of self therapy, it hit me that there was simply no right way to be who I am. No matter how hard I twisted myself out of shape, I would still be wrong.
As being right was impossible, I decided I would just own being wrong, but in my own way. And I have not looked back. I have learnt to like my “wrong” self. I have learnt not to care whether you like me or not or agree with me or not. I am me. You don’t have to like me, but nor do you have the right to insist I change to suit you.
And I don’t think it’s just me who suffers from this sense of being wrong. I keep thinking of all those studious, conscientious, highly anxious beavering away in schools and universities trying to be both literally and metaphorically right.
No matter how hard we try, or how many awards, qualifications, degrees and honorifics we achieve, we can remain wrong.
You can spend a lifetime trying to discover the secret to being right. Or you can give up the whole game and just be uniquely, magnificently, defiantly wrong. Turns out that being wrong is much more fun than being right.
Why being yourself can be so much more fun than being right
