Before Easter, my family and I went to the States for the wedding of one of my sons. We were away for nearly three weeks, and one of the places we visited was New York. One thing we did was catch a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Next was Ground Zero, where the Twin Towers once stood. Now there is a little park which includes two deep pools, one where each of the towers stood, with a bronze rim around each, engraved with the names of the victims.
The next day, I flew to Chicago to stay with a cousin. We assumed I would be leaving from the JFK airport, where we had arrived from LA. But when I arrived at the United desk, I was told I should have been at the Newark terminal in New Jersey, a 55-minute taxi ride away. It was Sunday morning so the traffic wasn’t as thick, and the driver told me he could get me there in 45 minutes. He was a speedy driver and did. But as I was sitting in the back, I noticed the minutes ticking by and the meter ticking higher. It turned out to be $205 USD. Fortunately, the United people took pity on me and didn’t charge me for a new ticket, as I missed my plane.
Then I tried to ring my cousin but couldn’t get through. After messaging my son, still in New York, I discovered he’d accidentally bought me a SIM card from Hong Kong, so I had to press +1 before every number, and people couldn’t ring me as it was an expensive international call.
But the wedding was great, and I was glad all my family was in attendance.

Photo: Ben TreThe Logan property market has been on a wild ride in recent years, thanks in part to pandemic panic buyers who drove prices to new heights. But with the market finally cooling down, we decided to jump on the renovation opportunity and seek out a project that could turn a profit. In our quest for local trades and services to assist us in this endeavour, we stumbled upon a hardworking ‘Power Couple’ from Loganholme, whose story is a must share for this May issue. Grant and Amie have been operating their ‘External Powerwash Solutions’ business for almost a year, and their conduct and professionalism since day one have been truly outstanding. We were particularly impressed with Grant’s approach to the tasks where he went well beyond our expectations with no fuss! All we can say is that we’re grateful for their expert help, and we can’t wait to share with you the Q&A session we had with them below.
We are a family of 5! Grant has recently been discharged from The Australian Defence Force, which he served for 15 years, and Amie is a Business Development Manager for a Pharmaceuticals company and currently on maternity leave. We have 3 boys, Jason 11, Percy 4 and Tarquin who is 8 months. We love
family time and movie nights on Friday's is a must — with popcorn of course! We also love spending time at the beach.
We're curious to know how and when your business journey started and how it's been going so far.
External Powerwash Solutions came to life after the love of "Pressure Cleaning", I mean who doesn't find those videos oddly satisfying!? With Grant discharging from the ADF, he wanted more of a work /life balance and starting this business he was able to achieve that. We have been on the ground running for almost 6 months now and we are very humbled by the response we have had from our community.
When clients engage your service, what can they expect?
With Grant's attention to detail and work ethic, you will not be disappointed. He always goes above and beyond for our customers, and it shows from the wonderful reviews and feedback we have been receiving. With the latest equipment, we will make your home or business exterior transform. And with Amie on the phone, she will look after all your inquiries and bookings.
As a family business, what are some of the pros and cons of working with your spouse?
Pros is watching our goals being achieved together and making time for our family, being present for our boys! Apparently, the con is Amie telling Grant what he needs to do day to day... :)
What has been your most successful way of getting new customers?
As we mentioned, our local community has been so supportive. We have found that advertising through different Facebook groups has been our most successful way of getting new customers and word of mouth from friends, family and previous customers.
Living and working in a local area can be so rewarding. Could you tell us what you love about where you're located and why it's so special to you?
We bought our home almost 3 years ago and have grown up around this area. We love supporting local businesses and believe that local communities should support each other.
Building relationships with other local businesses can be great for everyone. Do you collaborate with or support any other businesses in your area?
We currently support John Tatnell at Stone Real-estate and Nadine Nobile from The Mark Coleman Team at Remax, along with donations to a local school for fundraising and for their Mother's Day raffle.
We are also a valued supporter of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Evidence Based Policing, providing a service to Qld Police
and their members. We are also a preferred contractor for Anglicare Southern Queensland, servicing their community clients in their own homes.
Lastly, we've got to know... what's your favourite local cafe or restaurant?
Coffee — Grant visits Est Espresso Bar at Cornubia Shopping Center daily! Food — Can't go past The Foxy and OB OG Kebabko Loganholme - so delicious!

Three Logan City Council apprentices have been presented with the tools of their trades to take on their journey towards exciting careers.
Mayor Darren Power today presented the kits to Matthew Thompson (apprentice mechanical fitter), Mathew Bond (apprentice plumber) and JD Christ (heavy commercial vehicle mechanic apprentice).
The young men are part of a pilot program to determine the viability of directly hiring apprentices and trainees into Council’s workforce rather than using third-party training organisations.
Queensland legislation requires employers to provide apprentices with tools of trade for each year of their apprenticeships, and this is the first cohort to receive their starter kits from Council.
Councillor Power said regardless of how they were hired, Council trainees and apprentices gained nationally-recognised qualifications while getting valuable workplace experience.
“The people we employ through our trainee and apprentice program are highly regarded,” Cr Power said.
“They develop a good work ethic and learn skills that set them up for lifelong success in their chosen fields.
“Council employs around 35 people through this program each year, which is not only building our city’s future skilled workforce, but also encouraging them to aspire to a prosperous future.
“Having a trade can take you far, and we are proud to support the next generation who’ll be looking after our city’s infrastructure for years to come.”
As a small business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations of your business and lose sight of the bigger picture. However, celebrating your successes can help you shift your mindset and expand your thinking.
Embrace Change. Technology and consumer behavior are constantly evolving, and it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and innovations. Don't be afraid to try new things and take risks. This could involve adopting new technology, changing your marketing strategy, or expanding your product line. By embracing change, you can keep your business fresh and relevant, and stay ahead of the competition.
Expand your Thinking - Focus on your Strengths. As a small business owner, it can be tempting to try to be everything to everyone. However, this can be a recipe for disaster. Instead, identify what you're good at and focus on those strengths. This could be a particular product or service that you offer, or a unique selling proposition that sets you apart from the competition. By focusing on your strengths, you can create a niche for yourself in the market and build a loyal customer base.
Networking to Open your Mind. By connecting with other business owners and professionals in your industry, you can gain new insights and ideas. Attend industry events, join local business groups, and seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support. Networking can also lead to new partnerships and collaborations, which can help you grow your business and reach new customers.
Keep Learning. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences. You can also read industry publications and subscribe to newsletters and blogs to stay informed. By continually learning and expanding your knowledge, you can stay ahead of the curve and position yourself as an industry leader.
Set Goals and Celebrate. Setting achievable goals can help you stay focused and motivated, and celebrating your successes can help you stay positive and inspired. This could involve setting a revenue target, launching a new product or service, or winning an industry award. By celebrating your successes, you can reinforce your achievements and build momentum for the future.
In conclusion, expanding your thinking as a small business owner is essential for longterm success. Embrace change, focus on your strengths, network, keep learning, and set goals to achieve your full potential. By celebrating your successes, you can build confidence and inspire yourself to achieve even greater heights.
Celebrate this small business month - love your business.
We all love our smartphones, tablets, and laptops. They allow us to stay connected with loved ones, work from anywhere, and binge-watch our favourite shows. But what we don't love is the impact they can have on our sleep. Blue light, which is emitted by electronic devices, can interfere with our body's natural sleep-wake cycles and make it harder to get a good night's sleep. In this article, we'll explore the good, the bad, and the ugly of blue light exposure and offer some insights into reducing exposure before bedtime.
Blue light exposure during the day can actually improve productivity and mood. It can help regulate our body's natural sleep-wake cycles and keep us alert and focused. Many offices are now incorporating blue light therapy lamps to help employees stay alert and productive during the day.
Unfortunately, the benefits of blue light exposure during the day come at a cost. Blue light exposure at night can interfere with our body's production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. This can make it
harder for us to fall asleep and stay asleep, leading to daytime sleepiness, irritability, and poor performance.
In addition to disrupting our sleep, blue light exposure has been linked to a variety of health problems, including eye strain, headaches, and mood disorders. Long-term exposure to blue light may also increase the risk of certain cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer. So, it's not just about getting a good night's sleep – reducing blue light exposure can also have long-term health benefits.
Before Bedtime
To avoid the downsides of blue light exposure, cut back on it before bedtime. Limit electronic device use for at least one hour before bedtime, use blue light filters or glasses that block blue light, and adjust the brightness and colour temperature of your devices to reduce blue light exposure.
So, to sum it up, blue light is a double-edged sword. It can boost productivity and mood during the day, but at night it can mess up our sleep and lead to health issues. By reducing blue light exposure before bedtime, you'll not only improve your sleep quality but also reduce the risk of long-term health problems. Sweet dreams!

Mental health is an important issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, it is still a topic that is often stigmatised and misunderstood, particularly in certain cultures and societies. However, one powerful tool that can help break down this stigma and promote greater understanding of mental health is storytelling.
Storytelling has been used throughout human history as a way to connect with others, share experiences, and convey important messages. When it comes to mental health, storytelling can be particularly powerful, as it can help people see the experiences of others and understand the challenges they face. This, in turn, can help reduce the negative stereotypes and stigmas surrounding mental illness.
In recent years, there have been several Hollywood films that have effectively depicted the struggles of individuals with mental illnesses, such as "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Perks of Being A Wallflower," and "Canvas." These films have helped raise awareness of mental health
and have encouraged important conversations about the subject.
However, mental health is still stigmatised in many societies, particularly in Asia, where it is often seen as shameful and a sign of weakness. In these cultures, storytelling can be an especially important tool for raising awareness and promoting understanding of mental health issues.
For example, films such as Indonesia's "Ku Kira Kau Rumah" (I Thought You Were Home), India's "15 Park Avenue," South Korea's "Miracle Cell No. 7," and Japan's "Kotoko" have been praised for their bold representation of mental health. These films have helped break down the stigma surrounding mental illness and have encouraged people to talk more openly about mental health.
Storytelling can also be a valuable tool for individuals struggling with mental health. By sharing their own experiences through writing, speaking, or other forms of storytelling, individuals can not only help themselves heal but also empower others who may be going through similar struggles. This can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, which are common among those with mental health issues.
Overall, storytelling can be a powerful tool in raising awareness of mental health, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting greater understanding and empathy. By sharing our own stories and listening to the stories of others, we can create a more open and compassionate society that supports the mental health of all its members.

When most people think about adopting a pet, they typically envision a cute and cuddly puppy or kitten. But did you know that adopting a senior pet can be just as rewarding, if not more so? Here are some reasons why you should consider adopting a senior pet.
They're often already trained: One of the biggest advantages of adopting a senior pet is that they usually come with some basic training. They're often already housebroken and know basic commands like sit and stay, which can save you a lot of time and effort.
They have a calmer demeanour: Senior pets have often already gone through the rambunctious and hyperactive stage of their lives. They're more likely to be content lounging on the couch with you rather than tearing through
your house like a tornado. Their calm demeanour can make them great companions for people who want a pet but don't have the energy to keep up with a young and energetic animal.
They're usually already socialised: Senior pets have often already had a lot of socialisation with people and other animals. They're less likely to be skittish or anxious in new situations, which can make them easier to integrate into your home and family.
They need homes too: Senior pets often have a harder time finding homes than younger animals, even though they can make just as loving and loyal companions. By adopting a senior pet, you're giving them a second chance at a happy life.
They can teach us valuable lessons: Senior pets can teach us about the importance of ageing gracefully and living in the moment. They remind us that age is just a number and that we should cherish every moment we have with our loved ones.
If you're considering adding a pet to your family, don't overlook the benefits of adopting a senior pet. They can be just as loving and loyal as younger animals, and they may even have some advantages that younger pets don't. So why not give a senior pet a chance? You may just find that they're the perfect addition to your family.
In today's fast-paced world, children are under more stress than ever before. From academic pressures to extracurricular activities, it's no wonder that many kids struggle with anxiety and overwhelm. That's why it's more important than ever to provide children with opportunities to unwind and connect with their bodies and minds. And what better way to do that than through dance?
Dance has long been recognised as an excellent way to improve physical health, self-confidence, and social skills. But it's also an effective tool for promoting relaxation and reducing stress. When children dance, they are able to focus on their bodies and the movement, which helps to quiet their minds and bring a sense of calm.
To get the most out of dance activities for promoting calmness in children, it's essential to start by calming the body and brain. This can be done through activities like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualisation exercises. These activities help children to slow down, release tension, and focus on the present moment.
Once the body and brain are calm, it's time to start dancing. There are many different types of dance activities that can be used to nurture calm kids. For younger children, simple movement games like "Simon Says" or "Follow the Leader" can be a great way to get them moving and focused. Older children might enjoy learning different styles of dance, like ballet, hip-hop, or jazz. And for children of all ages, partner dances like ballroom or salsa can be a fun and engaging way to connect with others while also promoting relaxation.
In addition to promoting relaxation, dance activities also help children develop important life skills like self-regulation and emotional intelligence. When children learn to identify and manage their emotions through dance, they are better equipped to handle stress and difficult situations in other areas of their lives.

Are you feeling guilty for taking a day off from your fitness routine? Do you think that skipping rest days will help you achieve your fitness goals faster? Well, think again! Rest days are just as crucial to your fitness journey as exercise days, and here's why.
First and foremost, rest days are the key to injury prevention. Pushing yourself to the limit every day without taking a break is a recipe for disaster. Your body needs time to repair and recover after intense exercise, and if you don't allow it to do so, you risk injuring yourself. Intense exercise causes micro-tears in your muscles, and these tears need time to heal. By taking rest days, you give your muscles time to repair and come back stronger.
Rest days also give your mind a much-needed break. We live in a world where we are constantly on the go, juggling multiple responsibilities. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress, but it can also be stressful if you don't take the time to recover. Rest days give you the opportunity to recharge, regroup, and come back stronger.
Moreover, rest days can help you break through plateaus. Have you ever hit a point in your fitness journey where you feel like you're not making any progress? Rest days can help you overcome these plateaus. By taking a break from your usual routine, you allow your body to recover and reset. When you come back to your workouts, you'll feel stronger and more energised, ready to push through those plateaus and reach new heights.
But let's be clear, rest days don't have to mean total inactivity. It's important to stay active even on your rest days, but in a more relaxed and gentle way. Try a yoga class or go for a walk in nature. These activities will help improve blood flow and mobility without putting additional stress on your body.
So, take a day off and enjoy some well-deserved rest. Your body and mind will thank you, and you'll come back stronger and more energised than ever before. Remember, fitness is a journey, not a race. Take care of yourself, give your body time to heal and you'll reach your goals in no time.

The City of Logan’s youngest residents will soon be able to join in the fun at Logan North Aquatic Centre, with Council approving the addition of a new splashpad at the facility.
The splashpad will complement the multi-million upgrade to the 50-metre Jodie Henry Pool, unveiled last October.
The additional works will also encompass an upgrade to changerooms, including the addition of a ‘Changing Places’ facility which caters to the needs of people with a disability and wheelchair users.
Mayor Darren Power said the upgrades would complete the premier aquatic facility.
“Logan North Aquatic Centre is home to a worldclass 50 metro pool, and now it will have the water play area and changerooms to match,” Cr Power said.
“Since the upgrade of the Jodie Henry Pool, we’ve had people travel from across Logan, and even from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to use the facility.”
The $3.3 million project will be partially funded by $470,000 of Division 3 Local Infrastructure Program funding.
City Lifestyle Chair Cr Laurie Koranski said the project would be a welcome boost for the popular facility.
“Council is proud to continue to invest in our facilities that support an active and healthy community,” Cr Koranski said.
“The existing changerooms and children’s play area have been well used over many years and these upgrades will ensure this facility remains a premier aquatic centre.”
Division 3 Cr Mindy Russell said the new splashpad and changerooms would be a major drawcard.
“There will be plenty of families in Division 3, and across the city, who will be excited about visiting Logan North Aquatic Centre once these works are completed,” Cr Russell said.
“With the new 50-metre pool, the existing heated indoor 25-metre pool, and now a new splashpad, there will be something for the whole family to enjoy.”
A timeline for construction of the splashpad and upgrade to the dressing rooms will be set once designs are finalised.

Family problems may have a friend or love partner feeling unsettled and helpless. This person could have a few communication problems, especially if firmness is required. Don't get sucked into the situation. Just point out the facts.
Has someone given you a chore to do and then taken off without giving you any instructions? It's no wonder you feel confused and frustrated! If there is no manual, and if no one else knows what's up, don't feel bad about letting it go until you're given proper coaching.
Staying indoors might not be the best thing today, Aries. You might feel vague muscular aches and pains for which you can't find any reason. They could be the result of inactivity rather than any dysfunction. Get outside and go for a walk.
A family member may be absent without explanation, Taurus. This might worry everyone, and not without reason. It's best to stay calm and phone friends, colleagues, and anyone who might know where this person is. All is probably well.
Make sure you enjoy a good hearty laugh for at least some portion of the day. Whether you're in a virtual meeting or just talking to your cat or dog, this laughter will help heal some of the tensions that are building within you. You will feel a tremendous relief.
Are you working on a project that requires a little ingenuity? If so, today you may draw a blank. Perhaps it would be best to put it away and do something else for a while. Trying to force the issue will only reinforce the mental blocks.
The position of the planets encourages you to be more spontaneous in your love life, and less conditioned by and worried about what other people may be thinking. There may be someone whom you are particularly drawn to, whom you think your friends or family may not approve of.
Not all the pieces seem to be fitting into place for you today, but that's fine. They don't have to. Give yourself a break. Don't put pressure on yourself to accomplish anything extraordinary. Just kick back and relax.
Your mind is clear, and you're extra sharp and witty. Have fun with this energy whether or not you are sharing it with friends, co-workers, or both. Light-hearted conversation brings breakthroughs in your career, whether or not you're on the clock today.
Some news about a major event could unsettle and confuse you, Scorpio. You're primarily concerned about how this will affect you. The answer is probably very little. The truth will come out in a few days. Hang in there!
The people you communicate with today will be very beneficial to your career, even if these conversations aren't happening in any sort of work-related context. By just being yourself, you will automatically draw lucky and supportive people to your side.
If you're working, others will find ways to distract you, and it won't be easy to stay focused. Most likely, however, you'll be footloose and fancy-free anyway, and this will most certainly be for the best. Talk to others instead of turning within.
Bursting with excitement, Rosey walked happily towards Gramma’s house as the radiant sun rose over the huge, shady forest. Rosey could hear numerous birds singing, leaves rustling and crickets chirping. As she skipped along, she could smell the scrumptious freshly baked cookies in her basket, but she knew she couldn’t eat any until she arrived at Gramma`s house.
Suddenly, a grey creature, a wolf, appeared from behind a tree making his way towards the path where Rosey was walking. Even though she was shocked, she was determined to continue her journey.
“Where are you off too, little girl?” the wolf asked confidently.
“I`m off to Gramma`s house with these delicious cookies my mum made!” Rosey replied courageously.
Then she sped off along the track, hoping the wolf wouldn’t follow. After a couple of minutes, Rosey glanced over her shoulder to check if the wolf was behind her. She was relieved that he was nowhere to be seen and she continued happily.
Finally, she arrived at Gramma`s house and knocked on the door, but Gramma didn’t answer so she shouted, “Gramma I`m here with cookies for you!”
“Come in! I`m in my bedroom!” the wolf invited cunningly.
Rosey was surprised because the voice was too squeaky to be Gramma`s, and now she was suspicious. As Rosey entered
the bedroom, she could see a difference in Gramma`s appearance. Gramma’s ears were too large, her hair was too furry, and her sockcovered feet were sticking out at the end of the bed.
“Gramma, you look so different! What happened?” Rosey questioned.
“I`ve been really sick lately,” the wolf answered deviously.
“What day is it today?” Rosey interrogated, trying to find out whether it was really Gramma or not.
“It`s aaaahhhh uuumm… it’s Friday,” the wolf answered nervously.
Recognising this wasn’t Gramma, Rosey ran like a cheetah out of the house. Ferociously, the wolf jumped out of the bed and chased her. Rosey began to yell for help. Luckily, a woodcutter was close by, carrying his axe, and as soon as he heard Rosey, he ran to help her. When the woodcutter arrived at the house, he saw the wolf so he headed straight to the back
door, assuming the wolf was going there. The wolf beat the woodcutter to the race but that didn’t matter – the woodcutter had his axe. He threw it… and bullseye! The axe hit the wolf directly on the head, knocking him out and killing him instantly. Rosey was relieved but worried about where Gramma was. The woodcutter and Rosey searched thoroughly throughout the house and finally found Gramma tied up and with tape over her mouth, cramped in a large cupboard. Gramma and Rosey were glad they were now both safe, and the atrocious monster was dead. They thanked the woodcutter who then hurried off.
“What day is it Gramma?” Rosey asked jokingly.
“It’s Friday,” Gramma replied confidently.
“Oh Gramma, today is your birthday! That’s why mum sent me with these cookies for us to celebrate!” Rosey answered happily.
Meanwhile, the woodcutter eagerly took the wolf home and cooked him up for dinner!

Becky Sharrock is one of 80 known people worldwide with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM). She can easily remember minute details of her life including events on specific days and dates.
Every member of the Sharrock-Barnes family, from the Logan suburb of Hillcrest, lives with a disability including autism and dyslexia.

Because We Have Each Other tells the blended family’s story, how they deal with their neuro-diversity, along with having too many pets and too many bills to pay.

The film will also premiere on Sunday, April 30 at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, Canada attended by some of the family and members of the production team.
Seed funding for the film was provided through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
The family is looking forward to the local
“It’s amazing that we can get to share and show who we are and shine in our home city,” Janet said.
“We’d like to put a positive spotlight on families in the City of Logan.”
Brent, who runs a spray painting business in Underwood, said the local screening would allow the family’s close friends and customers to enjoy the documentary.
“I’m telling everyone who comes into our business to come along and see us on the big screen,” he said.
“We are proud to be showing the lives of people with disabilities in our area.”
At 2.30pm after the film screening the Sharrock-Barnes family members will take part in a 30 minute Question and Answer session along with the film’s director Sari Braithwaite and producer Chloe Brugale.
This will be followed from 3.30pm to 4.30pm by the Logan Artworkers Networking Event including a free industry panel discussion.

Talks, workshops and hands-on activities will help mark the 2023 Australian Heritage Festival in the City of Logan
Logan Libraries, Mayes Cottage and the Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) Cultural Precinct will hold events in April and May to celebrate the National Trust of Australia-run festival.
The theme is Shared Stories.
Author Caylie Jeffery (photo on the bottom), in partnership with the Queensland Writers Centre, will present a legacy storytelling session from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, May 13 at KBF.
Ms Jeffery will discuss how old letters, photographs and keepsakes can be used to capture stories and memories.
Visitors to KBF can also experience the stories of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in the First Nation’s exhibition space in the Living Museum of Logan.
Dr Maclean will also share more about the City of Logan’s pioneering families, such as the Mayes family, through the 150 Years of Scrubby Creek discussion from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Saturday, May 20 at Mayes Cottage.
In 1873, the Mayes family settled on 321 acres of land in the area that was later to become Kingston.
City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said preserving family stories opened a window to the past and captured the heritage of a community.
“Creating a legacy like this for your family will help them better know the stories that shaped them,” Cr Koranski said.
“I encourage those interested in family history to book into some of the wonderful sessions on offer during the Australian Heritage Festival.”
Bookings for all events can be made online at Heritage – Logan City Council Libraries (loganlibraries.org)
