@logancityguides www.logancityguide.com.au
here is no doubt the past two years have been quite challenging for most of us and we’re looking forward to new opportunities
I hope that everyone has had the chance to spend some time recharging their batteries with those people who mean the most to them – I know I have.
As the City of Logan swings back into action, we'll see some exciting things come to
In 2021 Council endorsed a new vision to become ‘a green city full of pride opportunity and culture.’
I’m proud to say we are putting words into action with the opening of the redeveloped and much anticipated Kingston Butter Factory precinct in early 2022.
On 29 January 2022 Council is hosting a launch party to mark the arrival of Logan’s first ever cultural precinct. Join us at 6.30pm for a host of local legends, culture, and spectacle, with the Logan community at the heart of it all. This is a free event offering a mix
of cultural and contemporary music, dance, visual and spoken word performances.
We'll continue our commitment to delivering vital community infrastructure including the refurbishment of the Logan North Aquatic Centre and we will commence construction on two master-planned sport and recreation parks.
Rosia Park, Park Ridge covers 68 hectares of land and will include the first criterium track in the city and the first banked track of its kind in Australia. There’s also a nature play area, barbeques, picnic areas and walking and mountain bike trails. Waterford West District Park, Waterford will commence construction in the later in the year and will include water play and adventure play areas, a wetland and amenities. Both are designed to meet the future sport and recreation needs of some of our most rapidly growing communities.
These parks will join Council’s 958-stong park network, improving and delivering family-fun spaces that make a positive difference to our lifestyles and our city.
Our city is the best place in the world to raise a family, with great lifestyles and affordable housing and it is undeniable that people love living in the City of Logan.
As a city we’ve set ourselves some big goals for the next 12 months. With my fellow Councillors, I'm ready to see what 2022 brings.

The Logan community is working together to increase awareness about domestic and family violence and what can be done to prevent violence, because we are more powerful together.
The Powerful Together Campaign is a Not Now, Not Ever in Logan initiative to make Logan a safe city that does not tolerate violence.
Everyone in the community is encouraged to show their support by wearing a Powerful Together badge. Badges, postcards with suggestions for how you can make a difference in the community, and Quick Help Guides are available at Logan City Council, Queensland Police Service, The Centre for Women & Co, and YFS front counters.
The Powerful Together campaign was launched on the 25th of November 2021 - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - and is supported by Logan City Council and several other organisations, including those providing support services to women, men and children in crisis.
A number of local medical practices, businesses and stores will have the badges, postcards and
guides on display – keep an eye out next time you visit a doctor or are out shopping.
Working together we have the power to make this happen – we’re powerful together.
You can visit the Not Now, Not Ever in Logan (notinlogan.com.au) website for more information or follow Not Now, Not Ever on social media.
Display the badges, postcards, posters and Quick Help Guides in the public areas of your business. You can order them by emailing notinlogan@yfs.org.au
Tell your staff about the campaign and put up the posters in staff lunch areas and bathrooms.
Promote your support for the campaign through social media. Use the hashtags #PowerfulTogether and #NotNowNotEverinLogan.
Take photos of your staff (with their permission) wearing the badges and post them on social media with your messages of support.
Ihave always loved steam trains and a memorable trip was when I went to Toowoomba for the Carnival of Flowers in 2015. I had left early in the morning, catching a suburban train to Roma Street, where the Toowoomba train was leaving from.
On a previous trip to Toowoomba, at Helidon they had attached a second engine to the first one, to help it get up the range. This time, they attached a diesel engine instead. It was between the steam engine and the nine carriages. But there was a problem. We went slower and slower, almost to a walking pace. The diesel was faulty. Finally, about half-way up, the train stopped altogether, the steam engine unable to pull the diesel as well as the nine carriages.
So there we sat, for 2 ½ hours, while waiting for two learner diesel engine drivers, who were practising out at Dalby, to come back and rescue us. All the food in the canteen was eaten up in the meantime, as we were supposed to have had lunch at the Railway Refreshment Rooms at Toowoomba. Finally, they arrived, and were hooked up to the front of the steam engine. I felt so sorry for photographers who had been waiting
for hours at Springvale Railway Station, to take pictures of the engine as it steamed round the bend. Instead, they were greeted by two huge diesels.
At Toowoomba, the kitchen staff were on the platform to greet us, cheering and clapping as we arrived – at 3.10 – and the parade had started at 3.00 Some people, who had paid extra to get front seats at the parade, were whisked away, and the rest of us were put on a bus to tour the gardens. But because it was so late, we just drove around two parks, stopped at the 2nd prizewinner’s house to peer through the windows, and then drove to the 1st prize winner to wander around the truly beautiful garden. Then they took us to a café where we could buy some very welcome food.
Local people had paid to have a trip down the range to Helidon, while we went there by bus. At Helidon, they caught our bus back to Toowoomba, while we caught the train. Downhill was fine – they didn’t need the assistance of the diesel engines. The only trouble was, we arrived at Helidon long before the train did – they’d had to uncouple the diesels, water the engine and so on. They got there at the same time we were
Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”
The art of giving flowers is something that has been encouraged in every culture. A fresh bunch of blooms has easily been one of the top choices for gifts to give for centuries and it’s easy to see why.
Any occasion is appropriate for giving flowers because they provide the perfect way to brighten someone’s day. The way flower bouquets are arranged, the colour and the type of bloom you give all work together to convey multiple messages. And it’s amazing how much these messages can differ from flower-to-flower. So why do we give flowers as gifts? And why has this tradition been so treasured since prehistoric times? Here’s a few reasons why:
The biggest reason we give flowers as gifts is to connect with an emotion. Whether its love, joy, affection, appreciation, sympathy, romance or apologies; flower giving communicates the deepest feelings in the most elegant manner. Depending on the type of bloom, its colour and how it has been arranged will ultimately dictate the emotions conveyed between the giver and receiver.
One of the best things about receiving flowers is the immediate happiness you feel. Even as the giver, the feelings of joy are invaluable. This instant sense of happiness that’s portrayed through flowers demonstrates true delight and gratitude creating an instant smile on someone’s face. It’s this immediate happiness that goes hand-in-hand with gifting flowers for special occasions.
The visual effect of blooms impacts long after the gift is given. Used as part of interior decorating, flowers can provide a stunning attraction to any space. Even after the blooms have died, drying flowers out can provide aesthetically pleasing results. Flowers are notorious for brightening up a space which keeps those feelings of happiness and positivity lasting longer. Adding flowers to your work or home space can boost productivity, clear the mind and promote a healthier and happier environment. They can be used as centrepieces or to add colour to interior or exterior decorating and visually inspire the creative minds.
ost people have no idea how good their body is designedto
That is what Rochedale South local, wife and mother of 2 discovered when she started doing yoga and Pilates. The transformation she has experienced, both physically and mentally, since she stated has been life-changing.
So much so, Ana decided to help others and has been teaching yoga and Pilates since 2013; believing that exercise and movement should be the way
“I am passionate about providing a nurturing and safe space for you to move your body” explained Ana, owner of Om Wellness, “We would like to empower you with the skill and knowledge to best nourish and move your body.”
How did you get involved in Yoga and Pilates?
After having my second child, my body was not the same as it was before having kids. I had to go and see a physio to help me with several things that happened after having kids and he recommended I take up some Pilates to help me repair my core and help with my posture. With that, I joined a local Reformer Pilates Studio and have not looked back since.
Not only did Pilates help me repair my separated abdominals but it also helped with my pelvic floor and helped me get back into shape. Through this, I also started to practice Yoga which helped me deal with my post-natal depression and anxiety.
That was a catalyst to my change of life, mindset and now helping others move better and feel better in their bodies. My passion is helping others feel amazing through mindful exercises such as yoga and Pilates. Pilates and Yoga have helped me not just see physical results but also mentally.
What made you open OM Wellness in Rochedale?
I knew Pilates and Yoga was amazing but the way it changed my life made me so passionate about sharing this with others.
I was never a fan of big gyms and have found them quite intimidating at times. My vision is to create a space where people can come together to exercise, challenge their body and mind without being intimidated and feeling judged.
All levels of experience are welcome at our studio, with each class catering for people’s levels of ability so everyone can participate in the workout and meet their body where it is at.
We all know that exercise has many physical health benefits but I believe the mental benefits outweigh the physical benefits. Focusing on breathing in Pilates and yoga helps individuals lower the stress levels that are within their bodies. Pilates is a wonderful exercise that can also aid in losing weight and toning the body; while, yoga will help you reduce stress and anxiety. Together they make a wonderful combination.
How long have you been open?
In September 2020, I took over Om Wellness. We have been open for 15 months.
What services do you provide?
At Om Wellness, we provide Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, Barre and Yoga Classes. We also offer Sound Healing events every month. By the end of January 2022, we are introducing a Sound Lounge. We also offer pre and post-natal yoga and Pilates classes.
Tell us about your 28-day Health & Wellness Program starting in January.
The 28 Day Health and Wellness Program is a program designed to help you kick start your health and wellness goals. It includes all classes we offer plus a meal guide and a 30 min consultation to go over your goals and help you get started.
What made you start this program?
I started this program to help those individuals who would like to start a new exercise program but maybe feeling a little anxious about starting something new. This program is perfect to help with setting some grounded habits.
Who should take part?
This program is suitable for anyone wanting to create new habits, start something new and create a lifelong love for movement. As we mentioned above, our classes are designed to cater for all fitness levels and our highly trained instructors will help make you feel comfortable every step of the way.
Do you have any other workshops and programs planned for 2022?
2022 will be a great year for Om Wellness! We will have Sound Healing workshops every month. As well as Beginners Crystal Bowl workshops where you can learn to play your own Crystal
Sound Bowl and the bowls benefits. In addition, we are also introducing a Sound Lounge to our studio. A Sound Lounge is a therapeutic device pulsing healing vibrations throughout the body to relax, retune, rebalance at the cellular level.
What can people expect when they come?
We have created a space that is very inviting, judgment-free and supportive. You will feel like you are part of an amazing community that cares about you and your wellbeing. Our instructors and clients are also willing to help you if you have any questions or are unsure of anything.
Where is your favourite coffee spot in Logan?
Logan is such an amazing place to live in. I have several coffee spots that I love including Moonlight Bandit Cafe, Extraction Artisan Coffee, Three Coffee and St Coco. All these places have great coffee and delicious food.
Apart from yoga, what do you like to do to relax?
To relax I love to go out in nature. I love to take my family out to of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and visit nature walks to slow down, be present and connect with our senses.

Logan City Council is stepping up efforts to make backyard pools safer this summer.
Council is encouraging residents to become a ‘Logan Little Lives Saver’ by checking that their pool fence and gate complies with Queensland’s pool safety laws.
Planning Chair, Acting Mayor Jon Raven said the focus of this year’s Council’s Pool Safety Education campaign will focus on self-closing gates, adult supervision and learning CPR.
“We keep finding that although the pool fence may comply with the state legislation, it’s often the gate that is the cause of drowning incidents,” Cr Raven said.
“Pot plants, rocks, and wire tied on a fence are used by some pool owners to keep the gate open for ease of access, unaware that this action can endanger lives.”
Cr Raven said Council will continue to take an ‘outcomes based’ approach to rectifying issues.
“We’re not about wielding a fine book, we simply want to educate pool owners to help prevent a tragedy. Fines will only be used as a last resort.”
Home fire safety will also be promoted with residents encouraged to request a QFES Safehome inspection, where a firefighter can visit a home and conduct a fire safety audit.
Iwent out to dinner with a friend. Not just any friend. He is a person I first met when we were both aged ten and my family moved into the house across the road. We had recently migrated to Australia. He is, obviously, my oldest friend. We might not see each other for years at a time but, whenever we do, we pick up just where we left off. Yet he is very different from me. He’s an anti-vaxxer (a subject we studiously avoid) but our shared history outweighs those differences, even during COVID-19.
Joining us was another old friend from primary school and his wife. He is a successful family law practitioner and, while we agree on most things (we are both made equally uncomfortable by our friend’s anti-vax views, for example). Nevertheless, we get on very well and always enjoy each other’s company.
As we shared good food, wine and conversation, I took a moment to think how far all of us had come since we first shared the school classroom. I felt so grateful for them both and the decades we have shared with one another.
I am not usually so reflective, yet I have found myself having more such moments of gratitude recently. Is this a positive effect of this weird COVID world we now occupy? Or is it something
to do with the unexpected gifts that accompany getting older? Or a combination of both? I don’t know.
What I am sure about is how the tenor of my friendships have changed in the past year and a half, particularly with my old friends. Such friendships seem to have gained a deeper sense of calm and acceptance. None of us are perfect. Some of us have had an easier ride through life than others. But so what? When you reach the (hopefully) safe harbour of your 50s or 60s, when the pattern of your life is more or less set, for better or for worse, perhaps the last small whiff of rivalry evaporates.
It wasn’t always so. Many of my friendships were very competitive when I was younger. We competed over who was the coolest, who had the best-looking girlfriend and, occasionally, who got better marks. I recall going to my 20-year high school reunion (we’re approaching our 50th now) and hating it. Everyone was comparing how big their houses were and how much they earned. No more. We seem to have finally accepted ourselves as we are. Maybe that is to do with reaching our 60s.
Or maybe there is more to it than that. Maybe COVID has helped many of us – not just those of us who are growing old – to reassess our priorities and to stop chasing false gods. Many people have had to accept a smaller income and a check to their ambitions, and we’ve all had to accept more realistic and achievable goals. No one’s life is as glamorous as it once was. No longer do we boast about travelling to exotic places on social media (I was once a serial offender). And again, for many of us, we find that just having enough toilet paper in the cupboard is cause for celebration.
For some people, particularly those who have lost relatives or their jobs, COVID has been a disaster. But for those of us who have been luckier, it has forced us to refocus on what matters. Our friends,

When asked to write, children often say, “Writing is too hard!”
When asked why, they usually say, “… because I don’t know what to write about!”
Interestingly, there are many great old stories out there that are ripe for the picking; and if you tell a child to think of a story they already know and write about that, they’ll be harvesting in seconds and will probably have a story written in minutes. After writing it, the child reads it aloud to check it; then, with a little time focusing on writing techniques - sentence starters, punctuation, and vocabulary - the writing exercise has turned into a far more positive and profitable learning experience.
Shadows lengthened as the sun dipped secretively behind the menacing forest— home to the ever-hungry wolf. After a long day tending their corn crop, the fearful yet determined three little pigs raced, as they did every day, to somewhere safe for the night where they planned their surprise attack using their imagination, their positive attitude and their teamwork.
Stay tuned for more of this mini masterpiece.

Let’s face it – the pandemic has been rough on us all. Keep reading to find out how you can start fresh with just a few tweaks.
1. Clear your mind and start with new thoughts: You cannot add new ideas to an over-filling cup. So hopefully, over the Christmas period, you have allowed yourself a little me time to clean your own cobwebs out, reflect, and develop new energies and themes.
2. Clean your spaces and get things in order. Freshen up your business as if you were starting again. It is amazing how we overlook the little things in front of us every day. Business changes, people’s needs change, and products change fast these days. It is a bit like the painted sign out the front that you don’t look at because it is right in front of you everyday. It might need a lick of paint!! Or dust for cobwebs. How can you make your business look and feel fresh? If nothing changes, nothing changes.
3. Focus your energy on how and what you want to be or to achieve in 2022 - for you and your business. Energy flows where attention goes.
4. Use the power of your mindset to stay focused. Self-talk is so powerful it can make or break yourself and your business. Your positive thinking and approach to life’s hiccups, your confidence in taking on new challenges, and overcoming your deepest fear to be powerful beyond measure are in your power. We have it all within us. Healthy mind, healthy body, healthy soul, healthy business.
5. Overcoming excuses and obstacles. Bright shine stars, I call them. We all have them; if you’re creative, there is often more. You find 10 million things to do that are really interesting but not really your focus. You can make excuses, or you can make it happen, but you can’t do both
6. Making a commitment set about creating SMART Goals. Not too many 3-5 is good to focus on. People with goals are 42% more like to achieve. Opportunities don’t happen; you create them. The clearer your goals, the easier to implement.
7. Make yourself accountable, track your progress, talking to someone increases your success by 72%. Make yourself accountable by engaging a mentor or coach.
“It is not the cards you are dealt; it is the way you play them.“
May your new year be filled with new opportunities and challenges that engage your heart and fulfill your dreams.

The availability of “local talent” — generally discussed as talent that is local to the market in which the work occurs — is cited as a challenge for many local businesses.
While some businesses seek to engage local talent simply as a way to staff the work, many others see engaging local talent as much more integral to their ability to achieve impact. Local talent brings a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the local ecosystem, culture, and appropriate solutions; may have existing relationships to leverage; have inherent credibility due to ‘insider status;’ and can help drive the sustainability of the business.
A skill set mismatch and competition for skilled talent are often cited as key challenges in finding
local talent. But the obstacles also include “shaking off entrenched assumptions and business cultures.”
Talentify works to tackle these assumptions and cultures around unemployed youth in particular, as it fundamentally believes that “talent takes many shapes, and people have the potential to do things they haven’t necessarily been trained for or done before.” To connect the significant population of unemployed youth with entry-level jobs, Talentify helps employers make shifts in their assumptions and operations to effectively engage these high-potential youth.
These shifts, as listed below, are also relevant to most any enterprise seeking entry-level talent in an emerging market.
1 Create hiring processes to judge a young person’s capability, rather than considering only their prior work experience and educational qualifications;
2 Adopt new tools for hiring that can judge future potential to do the job (such as assessments to measure learning potential),
instead of relying solely on school-based knowledge (i.e., numeracy and literacy tests that judge only the quality of previous education);
3 Take innovative approaches to create more inclusive workplaces and break down barriers to retention (like providing an advance on first pay so a young person who has no income can afford transport for the first month of work until the first pay cycle); and
4 Ultimately, create the evidence base to confirm that there is value in hiring youth with no prior work experience and thereby widening the available talent pool.
For all local talents, contact : simon@talentify.com.au

Changes have been made to Logan City Council’s Community Benefit Fund to make it more accessible.
Governance Chair Councillor Natalie Willcocks said Council was committed to good governance and transparency in providing financial assistance to the community.
“The Community Benefit Fund is a discretionary fund that allows the Mayor and Councillors to support eligible applicants for community purposes,” Cr Willcocks said.
“And while it’s discretionary, there are a number of checks and balances in place to protect ratepayer dollars.
“However, the community gave us feedback that the process for applying for funds was convoluted, so we’ve reviewed it and endorsed some amendments.”
Changes adopted at today’s Ordinary Meeting include:
• An earlier annual application closing date of April 30 to ensure any Councillor conflicts of interests can be considered in a timely manner before the end of the financial year
• Allowing applicants to be based outside of the city if they have a direct benefit to the Logan community
• Removing red tape for retrospective applications
• Moving the application process to the Smarty Grants software to further promote other grants available from Council and streamline applications
Cr Willcocks said Council offered a range of grants to support the City of Logan’s social, environmental, cultural and economic development.
“Our program includes EnviroGrants, the Regional Arts Development Fund, Investment Attraction Incentives Fund and Community Events Grants, and they’re all designed to make our city a better place to live.”

If you’ve ever travelled on a group tour departure you will know that in a lot of ways, the group of people you are travelling with can either make the trip a success or a failure.
Our Ladies Long Weekend (LLW) departure to the Whitsundays had an incredible group of women who came together from so many different backgrounds and yet got along so well and made the weekend a roaring success. The laughter, some resulting in tears, came freely and by the end of the weekend there were some sad farewells and promises to catch up again soon.
On the last weekend in November, we headed to Airlie Beach and checked in to the gorgeous and iconic Coral Sea Resort which was to be a base for the next 3 nights of our LLW. Our arrival went off with a bang with a glass of sparkling wine
awaiting our arrival. It wasn’t long until we met again for our welcome function of sunset drinks followed by dinner. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t want to assist us with the sunset drinks, but we thoroughly enjoyed the evening all the same. A welcome function is always included on an LLW departure to allow the ladies to get together, meet and relax around each other.
On Friday we headed out to the Whitsunday islands and spent the day jet boating around some incredible snorkel locations and finished with drinks on Whitehaven Beach. One of the highlights was the ‘fish bowl’ where we were literally surrounded by hundreds of fish –incredible. With a free evening, some ladies chose to meet up with locally-based friends whilst others chose to dine together and continue to enjoy each other’s company. Some ladies ‘may’ have danced late into the evening – something few of us get to do anymore.
Saturday was a free day for all. Half the group enjoyed the incredible Blush Spa located at the hotel; others indulged in a little retail therapy. Airlie Beach has several small boutiques and the purchases made were both unique and gorgeous. We all met later for sunset drinks and platters before retiring for an early night (especially the late-night dancers from Friday night!)
It was finally our last day, but we didn’t let that stop us before our afternoon flight! Many enjoyed an early rise and breakfast to get the last sunshine and swims in before heading to our farewell lunch at the well-known Fish D’vine restaurant. The ladies all knew we were being ‘transferred’ from the hotel to lunch, what they didn’t know was the transfer was by Tuk Tuk! The delights and squeals as they arrived certainly made it worthwhile. Although it was a short distance from the hotel to the restaurant
the Tuk Tuk team made it very enjoyable with a few detours thrown in. Lunch was (literally) devine – a banquet with 3 courses including incredible fresh and cooked seafood. With our tummies and hearts full we were collected from the restaurant to head to the airport for our flight home.
The next LLW departure is Hobart in March 2022 which is already sold out. I am offering a departure the following weekend which is available for the men as well. Please let me know if you would like more information.
Some feedback received from the attendees:
‘Beautifully organized - details were incredible and the welcome from Tina warm, friendly and genuine. Nothing else to add - superb!’
‘I would just like to thank you for everything. Every detail was amazing. From the bags with the goodies to the tuk tuk ride. You made it all very easy.’
‘I was full of trepidation but was very pleasantly surprised- I would definitely encourage others to participate too’
New to Revive is this extremely effective vascular laser. The laser staff at Revive had a little play with all the interesting new features of Cutera’s ExcelV Plus laser last Thursday.
“I have to say I love the Dermastat handpiece. Shaped like a pen, designed to get into those tiny corners like the nose area to get pesky little red veins which can be a little hard to treat effectively with the usual handpiece. A great bonus is that you can easily treat little pigment spots, too.”
“Green genesis is my new favorite, though. I have always loved traditional 1064 Laser Genesis, which I liken to a light bath for your skin, which happens to rejuvenate - lovely results over time. But Green Genesis is great for Rosacea and intermingled red and brown
discoloration. It is a light bath also, but the wavelength is shorter and aimed more at superficial skin. It is not for everyone though, just for lighter skin types, Fitzpatrick I-III.”
So, if you feel like you would like to give it a try, give us a call today. It is recommended around 3-5 monthly treatments. Usually costing aound $400 a treatment but we are offering an introductory treatment for only $300. Valid till 17 April 2022.
The larger spot size on the vein handpiece means that all other treatments including leg veins are much quicker.

“Be the change you want to see in the community”.
s a motto that Beenleigh local Chaplin and social worker, Nick Carroll lives his life by every single day, being a positive role model for the youth of Beenleigh.
Chaplin Nick Carroll or ‘Chappy Nick’ as he’s fondly called, has been a positive influence for the youth of Beenleigh and the surrounding areas for over 9 years.
Why do you do what you do?
I do what I do because when I was roughly 21/22 years old, I became a Christian and that was a life-defining moment for me. Since then, I have wanted to give back and help others; whether that be through community development, creating programs to include other people to create community and belonging or through mentoring to offer guidance and friendship.
What lead you to become a Chaplin?
At the time I was doing a lot of volunteer work in the Beenleigh and Eagleby areas. I was helping with local community groups and was running a Friday Youth night; where we were getting up to about 30 kids a Friday night in the local halls.
At Eagleby State School, there was a really good Chaplin but she moved on to another position and the role was made available. So, I gave it ago and I have been there for 9 years.
Where did your nickname ‘Chappy Nick’ come from?
Chappy is short for Chaplin, however, because I am sort of everywhere in the area, with the Eagleby Giants and other programs I run, the name sort of stuck and I’ve just become known as Chappy everywhere I go.
What are some of the programs you have developed?
There are a few programs that I have developed and implemented in the local community. There is the Kindness trail. That is where I take students on a little walk along the bush track at Eagleby State School, where students learn three values including gratitude which is gratefulness, empathy which is kindness and mindfulness which is just being present in the moment to relax.
Another one is the Mental Strength program, which has been developed from a 12 steps program called ‘Grow’ that run in Eagleby every week. We touch on things like personal value, the principle of ordinariness, what is it that I really want and responsibility.
In addition to this, I also run a lot of lunchtime activities across both schools (Beenleigh High
and Eagleby SS) like soccer, board games, cricket, games room and even a woodwork program that we run in collaboration with the Palm Lakes Resort. I also coordinate two Breakfast Clubs that run 5 days a week at both schools.
Furthermore, I am also taking a group of 14 to 17-year-old boys through training during the off season; to help with their physical and mental strength.
How important to you is being a positive role model in the Beenleigh community?
Very. In life, everyone just needs one champion. Everyone needs that one person that will just believe in them and cheer them on to keep going. Our community needs positive role models especially for the younger generation as you can’t be what you’ve never seen.
As a fourth-generation Beenleigh local, how has the town developed over the years?
It has evolved from a small country town to become a modern city. It has had growing pains over the years, however, the key to Beenleigh is that it has always been able to adapt for the next generation. With markets, activities, great cafes and fantastic produce, Beenleigh is booming. For a town that started out small and has been slowly adapting, we are producing some amazing things.
What (changes) would you like to see implemented in the Beenleigh community?
I think that we need to keep being positive as a community and build each other up to keep our community spirit alive.
Logan based business, Beenleigh Steel Fabrication (BSF) is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to fill an immediate need for 20 boilermakers and welders to add to their existing workforce of approximately 160.
With good long term contracts in hand, BSF is set to grow enormously in the coming years and with a relocation and expansion of its operation from Crestmead to Berrinba next year, it needs to gear up its workforce.
Company Director, Anthony Stoeckert says Beenleigh Steel Fabrication is on the front foot to attract skilled boilermakers and welders.
He compares the search however, to like that of the "Hunt for Red October" the Sean Connery movie where the world is looking for a defecting Russian Submarine.
"BSF has looked up every fjord and down every abyss.
"We have engaged with service providers and government agencies as well as with the usual job platforms like SEEK and Logan Jobs.
"We have always trained apprentices and provided jobs for our apprentices on completion of their time and we will be putting more apprentices on in the new year.
"Our workforce also has a diverse cultural background with people from around the world on our team," Mr Stoeckert said.
It is the immediate need for skilled people that has Mr Stoeckert and his BSF team looking for innovative ways to boost their workforce.
"BSF has a number of long-term contracts and current involvement in iconic projects like Queens Wharf and the Cross River Rail.
"We are seen as a 'go-to' business for the more intricate jobs.
"We have the highest Quality Assurance including for defence industry needs as well as having the highest Safety level accreditation.
"Our relationship with our employees is positive as we have greatest respect for them and have a real understanding of what it's like to be on the tools having been on them ourselves.
"With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics looming large as well as many other major infrastructure projects coming online, Beenleigh Steel Fabrication is well placed to win even more contracts to ensure secure and interesting work for our employees," Mr Stoeckert said.

eople love jewellery. They have loved to wear them since time immemorial. Jewellery has always played a great role in increasing our beauty and enhancing our looks. It can be very understated or make an outfit.
This is something that master jeweller, Larry Corbo and his team of professional jewellers understands and facilitates; providing custom designs and repairs for locals in Beenleigh and surrounding areas since opening L.C. Jewellers – Master Repairers and Design in 2004.
Why is jewellery important to people?
For a lot of people, jewellery holds sentimental and personal feelings of love and satisfaction. Often its special pieces of jewellery are passed down in the family or a treasured gift given by someone you love that holds the most importance for people.
Jewellery is also used to make a personal statement. Jewellery has an unquestionable ability to bring out the best in a person's features and personality when the right piece is worn by the right individual to the right occasion. It can make a personal statement and individualise a person.
How does one choose that 'Perfect' ring?
It all comes down to personal preference of design and feelings. What may be perfect for one person won’t be for another; everyone has their unique tastes, opinions and style. People also have different lifestyles that you should take into consideration when designing that ‘perfect’ ring.
Who should come to you for their jewellery need?
Anyone who needs their jewellery repaired, cleaned, resized or remodelled. In addition, if you are looking for that personal custom piece, our expert team are always happy to help with all your design needs and wants.
What drew you to Jewellery making?
I am passionate about helping people with their jewellery dreams. As a master jeweller, I can create something amazing and personal for them to treasure over the years. I love designing and creating pieces for individuals.
How long have you been a jeweller and were you always based in Logan?
I have been in the jewellery trade for over 45 years and have been based in the Brisbane and Logan area for most of this time. I completed my apprenticeship at Wallace Bishop in the late 1970s and since then I have had the opportunity to work with several companies and jewellers, enhancing my skills, knowledge and experience. In 2000, I was a winner at the Australian Jewellery Design Awards.
Tell us about the range of services you offer. We offer a range of services at L.C. Jewellers, including:
Master Repairers, Designers of personal jewellery, Create a one-off design, Source all stones including Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds.
What has been the proudest moment for you as a jeweller?
On a professional level, as a jeweller, the proudest moment for me would have to be in 2000, when I was chosen to design and make the inaugural Grand Final Players ring for the Broncos NRL team.
Where is your favourite coffee spot in Logan? I have to admit, I haven’t found a favourite coffee shop in the Beenleigh area yet; however, I am always on the lookout and love suggestions on places close by to take my clients.
And your favourite dining out venue?
In my opinion, you cannot beat The White House of Waterford. I have had many dinners there including my wife’s 50th birthday party where we had 70 guests. Their food and drinks menu is superb!

Sundays are about gathering the family together and enjoy food and quality time at a shared table. And a hearty roast is our favourite dish to serve up to the people we love. Give this recipe a try for your next Sunday dinner!
2 medium-size red onions, cut into 8 wedges
2 - 3 medium carrots, quartered lengthwise
2 - 3 medium parsnips, quartered lengthwise
3 tbsp olive oil, divided | 2 tsp pure honey
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tbsp pink peppercorns
1 tbsp green peppercorns 1 tbsp black peppercorns
1 1/2 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary
1.5kg trimmed beef tenderloin, tied with string
1
Preheat oven to 220°C with oven racks in upper and lower thirds. Toss together onions, carrots, parsnips, and 2 tablespoons oil on a large rimmed baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer half of vegetables to a second large baking sheet.
2 Using bottom of a heavy pan, coarsely crush pink, green, and black peppercorns; transfer to a bowl. Add rosemary, honey, and remaining tablespoon oil and stir to combine. Season with salt. Rub over beef and nestle beef among vegetables on one tray.
3
Roast both sheet trays, with beef on top rack, 15 minutes. Rotate pans and roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of beef registers 52°C for medium-rare, 14 to 16 minutes. Transfer beef to a cutting board and loosely tent with aluminum foil; let rest 20 minutes before slicing. Serve with vegetables.

The time has come to make (and vow to stick to) our New Year resolutions. New Year, new you? Yes, we’ve heard it all before. January is the month of making many promises to ourselves, that, let’s be honest, usually end up being broken after the first week is out, BUT ladies, hear us out; this year we’re going to stick to them! Yes, that’s right, you heard it here first – we can’t go back on our word now.
1Treat your entire body to a skincare routine. Chances are you’re accustomed to slathering your face with serums, lotions, and creams. But what about your body? The neck and chest area (AKA the décolletage) are equally as prone to the signs of aging as your face, and
your elbows, knees, hands, and feet are most likely to get dry, ashy, and even crusty.
2
Break out of your hairstyle rut. When you’re used to your daily hair styling routine, you may feel so comfortable that you forget to try new tress looks. As much as you love those extra few minutes of sleep, switching up your strands can make you feel totally put together.
3Never sleep in your makeup. It’s easy to pass out before properly removing your makeup, but nothing can justify the damage this does to your skin. Avoid clogged pores, breakouts, and possible infections by keeping a bottle of micellar water next to your bed with a few cotton pads so you can stick to this resolution no matter how late you get home. 4
Finally learn how to properly polish your digits. This year, get serious about at-home, DIY manis (and yes, you can even nail the latest trend).
5Don’t pick your zits. In 2019, make a resolution to keep your hands off your face when you’re in breakout mode! Instead of succumbing to the urge to pop or pick, use an extractor tool or a micro-needle patch. Taking care of a zit the right way, with one of these tools, will heal your complexion faster and leave you less prone to scarring.

Recently released research reveals that many Australian parents underestimate their self-worth, and it’s leading us to make poor life choices.
The extensive research project, which was commissioned by leading Aussie life insurance specialist, TAL, explored what Australians value
most in life. It found that over half (54%) of parents struggle to understand the value they provide to their family and friends, which may be leading to them to have negative repercussions like feeling guilty for not spending enough time with family and friends (23%), not providing enough financial stability to loved ones (26%) or regretful for spending time at work (14%).
The findings revealed that Australians struggle to understand their own worth as they tend to base their value on how much they earn or own, neglecting to recognise the value of their emotional contributions to loved ones – and, despite having children, parents underestimate their value more than the average Australian (54% parents v. 47% Australians).
“The findings show that the phenomenon of underappreciating the emotional support we provide to others is common, particularly among the younger generations, with many of us failing to see that we are a Most Valued Person – or a true ‘MVP’ – to our loved ones,” says Dr Ilan Dar-Nimrod, a research psychologist, University of Sydney. “This lack of awareness may also be impacting Australians’ self-value and the choices they make in life.”
Interestingly, the study also found that modern influences like social media are impacting the way we, as parents, view ourselves, with almost three in five parents (56%) saying that social media and television make them undervalue certain aspects of their life. It was also discovered that 64% of Australians consider their possessions, like their house or car, to be their most valuable assets, not themselves.
“These findings show that there’s a need for people to better understand that their ’self’ includes much more than just their assets,” Dr Dar-Nimrod says. “By underestimating their selfworth, people may be more inclined to lack belief in themselves and their decisions, and so be less inclined to make the decisions that may benefit them the most.
“As people, we have a natural tendency to recognise the value of material things, but it’s not so straightforward when it comes to ourselves. The value we provide
to others through emotional support and mateship is endlessly valuable, but it’s the first thing we seem to forget.”
By practising gratitude, you can help shift your attention to the good things around you and become more aware of things that you may take for granted. By focusing on the positives in life and the important people and things that enrich your life, you will be able to better understand your own value to realise that you are more valuable than you may initially have thought.
Consider the value that your loved ones have on your life and then flip it – imagine how these loved one’s value you. This can help you realise the full value that you bring to the people in your life and help boost your self-worth.
By doing things for others rather than yourself can make you feel good, leaving you feeling more satisfied which will positively impact your mindset and sense of self-worth. Find a balance between spending money on material objects and experiences. Whilst purchasing material objects can give you instant gratification, experiences create can create lasting feelings of happiness so find the balance between purchasing things that make you happy and having meaningful experiences.
their loved ones as they like to feel well supported by others too. They may question the decisions they make in life and sometimes wish they’d done things differently. Work tends to be less of a priority them.
Take a family orientated approach to life. Providing emotional support to loved ones is very important to them and they prefer to support people that way rather than buying material things. They have a positive outlook on life. Taking care of their health is important to them and they place less importance on their career than other areas of life.
Career-driven and community-aware. They often have fun and live a life full of spontaneity and change while enjoy having nice things around them and sharing them with loved ones. They recognise the importance of ‘giving back’ to the community and would like to give more time and attention to others. They sometimes compare themselves to others as a measure of how they’re doing in life. They tend to underestimate the value and emotional support they provide to loved ones. While striving to have a successful career, they can undervalue the importance of taking care of their health.
Having a successful career is important to them and something they take pride in. They like to have fun and embrace change by being spontaneous. They are highly driven to succeed financially so they can provide for themselves, their family, and have nice things around them. This can lead to them sacrificing their long-term happiness to focus on work and underestimating how valuable their emotional support and time can be for their loved ones.
The research also identified that Australians fall into one of four different profile types depending on how they view their own value.
Tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves and highly value the emotional support they give to
Most Australians (60%) fall into profile types that are more focused on family and value spending quality time (Conscientious Carers and FamilyFocused Optimists) while 40% are more careerdriven and focused on providing for others financially (the Gregarious Go- Getters and Ambitious Organisers).

Starting at a new school can be a stressful, challenging and exciting time for students. Parents play an important role in providing support and guidance for their child at this time. Here are 10 tips to share with your parent community to help provide support during this time.
Tip 1: Be positive about the transition. Build excitement by talking about all the new opportunities for friendships and activities they'll have.
Tip 2: Practice the new trip to school
It might sound silly but practicing the walk or bus/train trip beforehand will really reduce first day nerves.
Tip 3: Arrange a chat with an older teen who's been through it. If there's a neighbour or cousin who's started at a new school in the past organise for them to hang out and hear what it was like.
Tip 4: Make sure everything is organised. Bag, uniform and books are essentials for starting
at a new school so help them sort it all out before day one.
Tip 5: Start afresh with a tidy room and desk.
If their desk or room is hared make sure the rest of the family are on board with keeping things sorted.
Tip 6: Farewell the holidays. Organise a social day just before school goes back and, if possible, invite friends from their old school.
Tip 7: Don't commit too early. Encourage your teen to be social and not rush getting a new best friend. With the stress of making friends at a new school it's easy to jump at the first people that speak to you.
Tip 8: Avoiding comparing the new to the old.
Get your teen to look to the future even if they’re missing their old school a bunch.
Tip 9: Sign up to things straight away. Research extra-curriculars and help them decide on some they’ll sign up to in their first week.
Tip 10: Prepare them for stress. The unknown can be really scary but things like breathing exercises, getting active, and having "me-time" can all help with the transition.
If you’re looking for a new place to call home, don’t forget to take note of some potential rental issues.
Finding a good rental can be tough, but it’s important not to rush the inspection process. Know your rights, give yourself enough time to inspect a property thoroughly and don’t be afraid to ask a few questions before signing the lease. We’ve rounded up a few features to remember for your next inspection
1. Is there asbestos in your rental?
2. Look for evidence of water leaks
3. Inspect for mould
4. Don’t forget to open cupboards and cabinets to see if it’s all good under the hood
5. Thoroughly document the condition of a property before signing anything
6. Plug the exact address into Google and see what comes up
7. Inspect your property at different times of the day
8. Checking the direction and aspect of the sun can be important in heating, cooling and light
9. Where are your power points?
10. While negotiating is certainly harder in a competitive market, there are still opportunities for you and your landlord or property manager to compromise
So, don’t be afraid to ask questions — especially ones you’re entitled to know.

Cook something new each week. Everyone wants to eat healthier in the new year, but you should also try to eat more diverse foods. After all, variety is the spice of life. This year, choose an easy dinner recipe you've never tried before at least once a week. Visit online cookbooks or find recipes from your local super markets & butchers.
Read more books. January is the perfect time to start on a new book. To keep yourself accountable all year long, why not link up with friends and peers to connect over the best pages you've read? Local Book Clubs can help you get started on this and, together, you'll have a clear snapshot of how many books you'll end up finishing before the year's out.
Join a club. Starting a new hobby is one thing but joining a club will help you meet new people in the process. Squash, Tennis, Football etc can help you find a group of people with similar interests, and you can work on creating meetups with new friends in the process.
Creative clubs can also be a boon in helping you stick to mastering a new craft. A great example? Why not join ‘Mean Mothers’ at Beenleigh for a yarn!!
Prioritise age-appropriate screenings with your doctors.
Open your calendar app (or planner!) and make your appointments for the year in one sitting — not only will you get the anxiety-inducing nuisance over with, but exams will be less likely to get squeezed out as life gets bonkers. Start with your primary care provider, and ask which screenings (e.g., mammogram, colonoscopy) you're due for. Slot those in, then move on to the dentist's office, etc.
Exercise your brain.
Scientists are always learning more about how humans work to stave off cognitive decline — and while data may be divided, if one thing is sure, games can indeed play a role here. Researchers studied participants’ brain activity while they completed simple math problems and found that solving them feels like a reward, helping to curb negative feelings.
Playing the types of mind games can help manage stress and anxiety, as well as boost happiness endorphins at the same time.
Take the stairs.
Take 10 minutes to run up the stairs in your office or home. A published study in the journal Physiology & Behaviour found that tired women who climbed stairs for 10 minutes got a bigger energy boost than those who had the caffeine equivalent of a can of soda or half a cup of coffee (and burned calories too!).
Drink up.
You know you need to hydrate — but it's especially important when you get only six hours of sleep (or less!). You’re more likely to be dehydrated the day after a disrupted night of sleep, because a hormone that regulates your body’s water conservation is released in later stages of sleep. So down some extra water on those days if you can — and remember that too much water can be tricky for your gut, too.

Jumpstart a new career.
If this is your year to switch gears, you'll know it in your heart. Despite work routines still being impacted by the pandemic, there are ways that career experts say you can successfully negotiate what you need to stay happy at work. Or to stylishly and effectively move into the next phase of your life without burning any bridges.
Get in a body-positive mindset.
Social media can be a big asset in helping you jumpstart new health goals in 2022 — but it can also be easy to get led astray by certain trends and social pressures. There is a growing movement that embraces all shapes, sizes, colours, strengths, abilities (and disabilities!) if you know where to look. Some of our favourite body-positive accounts teach us more about all the amazing things each and every body can achieve.
Explore new hobbies.
Another sleepy Sunday? Today's the day you try Ethiopian food, attend a ballet, or take a painting class — whatever feels fun. When researchers followed 7,500 people for 25 years, they found
that those who complained of major boredom were roughly twice as likely to die from heart disease.
Do one thing at a time. Multitasking doesn't make you more efficient, but it does stress you out, says mindfulness expert Pedram Shojai, author of Focus: Bringing Time, Energy, and Money Into Flow. "If your focus is fragmented, you'll likely find yourself getting anxious as new items come up when old ones are still incomplete," he says.
Instead, he suggests, organise your activities into chunks of time, such as kid time and cooking time, and then "commit to being focused in those allotted minutes and see what happens." It'll help stop you from overthinking everything.

Local mother, grandmother and business owner, Helen Cowley has spent a lifetime in business. For the past 25 plus years, Helen has turned her attention to helping people, particularly small business owners to assist and guide them to their full potential.
“I love small businesses! They are mostly just people like me who have started out and need that bit of encouragement and understand” stated Helen, “I constantly ask myself, how I can turn things around for them or support them in the realizations that might be a bit difficult? I love seeing the lights go on in their understanding and the inspiration they also give me.”
Based in Munruben, southwest of Logan, Helen has been helping people and their businesses since 1995.
“I work with people throughout the state and some interstate. Although, the majority are in Logan, Ipswich, and Gold Coast, with one currently in Nanango and one in Sunshine Coast” stated Helen.

of Julia Creek. Then I spent three and a half years working at the Commonwealth Bank, gaining a good understanding of finance. I then went on to do administration and payroll of a Mitre10 store as well as managing a Retravision store.
When I got married, my husband and I set up an earthmoving and logging business. After several years, we purchased a shoes and accessories business which I ran for six and a half years.
During this time, my husband set up his repair and maintenance of earthmoving equipment business, which we still own and operate today. When I sold the shop, we moved into large fabrication tenders with a premise in Archerfield; employing up to 20 plus staff at the time.
For the last 25-26 years, I have run a Consulting Coaching and Training business, SBIS; starting because other businesses were asking me for help.
Over the years, I have gained many qualifications including an MBA and several certificates and diplomas in management, coaching and business development.
As a business coach, what type of business es do you like to focus on?
I have vast experience in different industries. The biggest thing is that businesses are willing to try something different and learn, be open to new thinking - not think they know it all. And, of course, they need to commit to their strategy or improvement.
What
I focus on providing improvement to knowledge (training), confidence (coaching and mentoring), performance (mentoring and consulting), and profitability (Coaching and consulting).
For some, it is just belief in themselves. While for others, it is business reviews and identifying challenges and issues - having that fresh set of eyes to help move the business forward.
What are you looking forward to in 2022?
Promoting "Your Cashflow Coach" plus I have a new website happening. I am looking forward to more online capabilities. I know what technology can do and it is always a matter of keeping up
with the changes so I can help others. I have a new YouTube Channel coming and I am looking forward to another grandchild!
What can people look forward to when they engage in your services?
Relationships are a big part of any connection. I need to know what their challenges are and how they see me helping them. I then review the information; both what they give me and what I find about them myself. Discover what their budget is and what I can provide within that budget. It is then a plan of steps including regular follow-ups to support implementation.
When you're not working with businesses, what do you like to do to relax?
Spending time with family is number one. I also love gardening, spending time with friends, art, design and sewing (if I get a chance). I have a trainer and love swimming, movies with my husband and interesting conversations about life and learning and passions.

If you’re looking for something extra to do over the summer school holidays which will help wildlife in Logan, this event is just for you!
Come along to this one-of-a-kind event – Cane Toad Busting – where you and your family can directly help Logan’s wildlife and natural environment.
Learn all about our valued native frogs at Eagleby Wetlands while also hunting for one of our most unwanted pests, the cane toad.
You will learn everything you need to know about cane toads as well as how get rid of them in your own backyard. Bring the family and compete for prizes!
The cane toad is poisonous at all stages of its life cycle. They are voracious feeders that consume a wide variety of native insects, frogs, small reptiles, mammals and even birds. Collecting and removing cane toads remains one of the best methods to control them!
During this family friendly event, you will learn how to identify cane toads, how to collect them
by hand and then how to remove them from the environment.
Please bring your own bucket (ideally with a lid), a torch, rubber gloves and a litter picker (optional) and wear enclosed shoes.
Logan City Council has partnered up with Watergum to play our part in reducing cane toads’ numbers and in doing so, provide a safer environment for our native frogs and other wildlife.
This event is part of Logan’s Cane Toad citizen science trial with Watergum, which also includes the Cane Toad Tadpole Trapping and Information Sessions, next scheduled for 17 February at Park Ridge.
Please ensure you are signed in and present by 6.15 pm.
