THE GIVING

MACHINE By Hazel Hillier, Retired Teacher

A

giving machine is a vending machine with a difference. Instead of getting something tangible when they put their money in the slot, people get a feeling of goodwill that they have done something to unite communities as well as helping people in need. Last year, the Giving Machine at the Loganholme Hyperdome was the first time one had been installed in the Southern Hemisphere. This year, as well as being in the Hyperdome again, (at the Coles/Kmart end) there are Giving Machines in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland. And what is it exactly? Six local charities have each chosen five items that will benefit people, ranging in price from $5 to $100, that other people can donate, with 100% of the money put into the machine going to the charity that the person has selected to support. The people manning the machine are all volunteers, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is responsible for getting the machine installed, is donating all expenses involved.

8 | Logan Guide

The charities are: Angel Flights, who have volunteer pilots and drivers who get people in rural areas to their medical appointments, Blaze Aid, which helps to rebuild communities after natural disasters, particularly farmers and rural communities, the Children’s Hospital Foundation, which supports children with any illness, injury or condition, Community Involvement Solutions, which looks after veterans, seniors and indigenous people, giving them emotional and mental support, particularly giving Torres Strait Island people relief from poverty and disadvantage, GIVIT, which connects people in need to items which have been donated, Rosies Friends on the Streets, who support people experiencing homelessness. Items to donate include PTSD support dog, fencing, petrol, pantry supplies and friendship packs. You can visit the Giving Machine and donate from 25 November to 27 December. Give a gift of hope this Christmas. Go check it out!

H

ere we are, well into the festive season and on the cusp of yet another year. How and why does time go so quickly?!

2023 has been a fantastic year for the travel industry and I’m pleased to report that travel is well and truly back in action, you could even say it's back better than ever. Brisbane (BNE) airport has reported 19,365,577 passengers to have passed through the airport in the 12 months to October 2023. That blows your mind doesn't it? Our office has seen some changes and I welcome Emily to the team as Jess has moved on to another role in the Industry. Emily joins me as a Trainee Travel Consultant and as the 2021 Logan City Council Trainee of the Year and a local Rochedale girl, I believe she will make a great addition to the office - welcome Emily.

Looking forward to 2024, travel is still in high demand. Destinations such as Japan, Fiji and Europe are really booming. We are going to see the Summer Olympics being held in France in July/August so that region of the world will be very busy. If you want to avoid the crowds, premium prices consider other French destinations like Eastern Canada or closer to home, New Caledonia, for your 'French fix'.

For more information, contact Tina:

Helloworld Travel Rochedale 10 | Logan Guide

07 3211 4977 Rochedale Shopping Village rochedale@helloworld.com.au

If you wanted to see the Cherry Blossoms in Japan you might very well have 'missed' the boat or will be paying premium pricing as this is one of the most spectacular and popular times to visit the country. Alternative times to visit is Autumn (September - November) to see the gorgeous orange colours and changing season.

Fiji is always busy at the moment and the key is to avoid peak travel periods and book WELL in advance (think 11 months!) to secure the best prices and availability. Fiji has seen such passenger numbers they have a number of hotels under construction to keep up with the incoming passenger numbers. I was lucky enough to spend a week at Plantation Island Resort in May for my 40th birthday surrounded by close friends and relatives from each chapter of my life - that was special and truly cup filling. If you have a big celebration coming up, consider organising a trip overseas and inviting everyone. Travel is such a wonderful experience to share with your loved ones and a memory no party will ever beat.

We're excited in the office to look forward to the coming year with travel plans of our own. Emily is going to be enjoying a 3-night Carnival cruise with her family to celebrate a birthday in February and then in April she will be travelling to Hawaii and Los Angeles. One fact about Emily is that she is Disney MAD so will be filling her cup (and knowledge bank) at Disneyland. I'm finishing off the year with a bang. I'm madly typing this article on a Sunday morning to meet deadline and leave in time for a 7 night South Pacific cruise onboard Carnival Luminosa with my children and parents. In May, I will be travelling to Queenstown with my family to once again celebrate my birthday (can you see the theme?!) and then in July my husband and I are going to enjoy 3 weeks in Europe doing a South of France River cruise with Avalon Waterways and some independent travel in Switzerland. I'm also working hard to get myself on a Virgin Voyages cruise at some point - have you seen how luxurious these look? Ladies Long Weekend will be releasing more departures for 2024. If you haven't yet signed up to our newsletters or follows us on socials, please do to ensure you don't miss an opportunity to join an incredible group of ladies experience a new destination or experience it in a new way among new friends. Finally, thank you to all the readers of our Logan City guide. I love meeting you around our incredible community and thank you for your support of this monthly article and of my locally owned small business. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a 2024 filled of travel, experiences and love.

ROBBY'S HOT TAKE Emerging Neighbourhoods of Logan City!

New data provided by the mortgage broking industry reveals buyer demand continues to grow and has surged in many suburbs, despite high interest rates, rising property prices and the cost-of-living crisis. While some buyers seek out desirable pockets where few homes come up for sale, others are attracted to suburbs offering relative affordability. Several factors, from rapid population growth to an increasingly tight rental market, have fuelled the demand for property this year, pushing more people towards home ownership. (Source: Mortgage Choice) And if you are looking to invest in the local Logan Property Market, check out Robby’s Top Suburb Picks to help you navigate & cut through to essentials.

T

he transition from one year to the next is a great time for reflection and planning especially when it comes to investing in property says Robby. Whether you're thinking about buying your first investment property or adding to what you already have, Robby from Eresidential has some insights for you. Here's Robby's hot take on the top five suburbs that have shown the most remarkable growth in the last year.

14 | Logan Guide

EDENS LANDING First on Robby's list is Edens Landing. Located between Beenleigh and Waterford, it offers great views and a family-friendly environment. It has experienced 8.6% growth over the past year, with a median house price of $630,000. The average weekly rent is $527, and the rental yield is 4.7%. Plus, the presence of Edens Landing Primary School adds to its charm. For investors, this suburb is a quietly appealing choice. BETHANIA Following closely, Bethania has witnessed a 9.0% Year-over-Year median growth, reaching a median house price of $565,000. The average rent here is $512 per week, with an annual rental yield of 4.9%. Bethania is distinguished by its pet-friendly parks, proximity to local shops, and easy access to public transport. HERITAGE PARK Then there's Heritage Park, with its 8.8% growth, coupled with a reasonable average rental of $570 per week and a 4.4% annual yield. Besides its tranquil neighbourhood, Heritage Park is just a stone’s throw away from the Logan Metro Sports Centre, major shopping destinations, and the Logan Motorway. PARK RIDGE Finally, Park Ridge, matching Edens Landing with an 8.6% growth, is quickly becoming a real estate favourite. It offers a mix of modern suburban homes and expansive bushland properties. Popular among retirees and families, it boasts an average rent of $550 per week and a 4.2% annual yield. Interested in these investment hotspots? Make

2024 GREAT Let this year be the one you finally follow through

Y

es, the time has come to talk about New Year’s resolution(s)…again. Creating these types of goals for yourself can feel like a way to stabilise your personal growth and centre your happiness at a time when pretty much everything else feels off-kilter. Or it can feel like a completely overwhelming way to put pressure on yourself and feel like a failure before spring. Thankfully, there are quite a few ways to set actually realistic New Year’s resolutions you can follow through on over the course of the year (and after, if you like). When done in a realistic way, creating resolutions can be a good, productive way to set goals and intentions for the new year and be-

18 | Logan Guide

yond. Deciding to make positive changes, like ditching a bad habit and adopting a healthier one, is always a good idea—one you should see through to the end. Often, what we don’t realise is that the problem isn’t that we aren’t capable of sticking to our resolutions. The problem is that we need to do a better job making new year goals that are actionable and achievable. Otherwise, it’s almost like setting yourself up to fall short. “Change is hard. We are creatures of habit,” my junior days tennis coach used to say. “Unless you are very motivated, have will to change & bring better game in the right environment.”

Experts who work with people to get past barriers and make lasting changes, know that there are all sorts of things that can hold people back from reaching their goals. They also know that some small mindset shifts and behaviour changes can actually make a big difference in whether or not you’re able to stick with a resolution or goal.

New Year, New Reads in 2024

How to set achievable new year goals Ever heard of a SMART goal? SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. It’s an acronym used a lot in business, and also one that fitness professionals rely on to help clients set doable goals. It’s also pretty handy for any New Year’s resolutions you’re mulling over right now. Making a goal SMART is a great tactic to increase your chances of actually sticking with it. For many common New Year’s resolutions—like exercising more, changing eating habits, and saving money, implementing this method can really help. Here’s an example of a SMART goal: “I will exercise for 30 minutes two times a week.” The non-SMART version of that: “I will finally start exercising regularly.” The first one lays out a goal that’s specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. The second one is vague and provides no clear direction for how you’re going to do it. Of course, you’ll also want to think about details, like when this workout will fit best into your schedule, what activity you will actually look forward to doing, and more. But thinking within the SMART framework first is a great way to get started formulating your goals.

the mountain is you By Brianna Wiest "The Mountain Is You" is a transformative book that delves into the concept of self-sabotage and offers practical guidance on how to overcome it. Written by Brianna Wiest, this empowering read explores the internal obstacles that hinder personal growth and provides insightful strategies to cultivate self-mastery.

Food: WTF Should I Eat? By Dr Mark Hyman Did you know that milk doesn't build bones, and eggs aren't the devil? In this book, Dr Hyman looks at every food group and explains what we've gotten wrong, revealing which foods nurture our health and which pose a threat. He also explains the crucial role food plays in functional medicine and how food systems and policies affect our environmental and personal health.

Profit First By Mike Michalowicz "Profit First" by Mike Michalowicz is a finance book that proposes a unique system for managing income and expenses. Aimed at entrepreneurs, it emphasises prioritising profit over revenue and offers actionable steps for achieving financial stability.

CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY

IN LOGAN

T

here were no ‘Battle Scars’ at KBF Cultural Precinct when our team attended one of the biggest events hosted at the Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct since its opening in 2022: 'Santa in the Suburbs,' presented by the dynamic breakfast hosts Stav, Abby, and Matt from B105. As we rushed to arrive at 6 am, there already were a sea of families: grandparents, parents, and children who had gathered to partake in the fun. By only 7 am, the crowd had swelled to impressive numbers, creating an atmosphere of excitement. The event offered a delightful spread of free breakfast and coffee, and naturally, our team couldn't resist sampling the mouthwatering scones from Devon Pixies and the delicious bao buns from Vagabond foods. Oh… we had Twisted Spuds too! (Just had to wait almost an hour, because the cue was that long). Children and families were treated to an array of captivating activities, including free photos with Santa and a llama-petting zoo. Plus, goodies were being handed out left, right, and centre.

24 | Logan Guide

And, of course, the highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the live performance by the incredibly talented Guy Sebastian. With his soulful voice, he serenaded the audience with his latest single, "I Chose Good," followed by a medley of his popular tracks, including "Before I Go," "Choir," and "Battle Scars." The crowd went wild, cheering, dancing, and singing along with the star. It was an enjoyable start to the festive season—a morning packed with fun, delicious food, and fantastic music. THE DO'S & DON'TS OF PUPPY POTTY TRAINING

H

another 15 minutes before trying again. If it’s first thing in the morning, he will need to do both #1 and #2—so if he only urinates, return him to his crate for 15 minutes and try again.

Do: Create a Potty Phrase Use a specific phrase like "Go potty" each time you take your pup outside. This verbal cue helps them associate the phrase with the action, making training more efficient.

Don’t: Stop Training Too Soon Continue the training routine consistently for several months, even after initial successes. Stopping too early can lead to setbacks, as consistent reinforcement is key to fully ingraining good habits in your puppy.

ousetraining can seem like hard work—but whatever you do, don’t get discouraged! Follow these 6 tips and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your puppy catches on!

Do: Clean Accidents Properly Use an enzyme-based cleaner for indoor accidents. These cleaners break down the odours that might attract your pup back to the same spot. Don't: Use the Crate as Punishment While crates are useful in potty training, they should always be a safe, positive space. Using the crate as a punishment can create negative associations and anxiety.

Don't: Ignore the Value of Sniff Time Puppies often need time to sniff around before they're ready to potty. Rushing them might make them anxious and less likely to go. Allow a few minutes of sniffing to help them relax and get ready.

Do: Watch the Clock Give your puppy 15 minutes to do his business. If nothing happens, put him in his crate for

A LITTLE BOY’S BIG LEAP AT NEUROFIT

BRAIN CENTRE

N

eurofit Brain Centre in Daisy Hill is a place where remarkable changes happen. Their latest success story is a heartwarming example: a 5-year-old boy who, before joining visiting the centre, had never spoken a word to anyone outside his immediate family. Even though he had been in childcare for two years, he'd never spoken to the leaders and never taken part in group play. The change began when he first visited Neurofit Brain Centre. Initially, he was incredibly shy, hiding behind his mum during sessions. But after a month, there was a noticeable shift. For the first time ever, he spoke up, asking a question to his childcare leader, who was taken aback by his newfound voice. That very same day, he didn’t just speak; he also joined in with his group play. His mum was so thrilled, she rushed over just to see him interact with other children.

SPOTLIGHT: GUARDIANS OF TOMORROW

M

eet Razia Ansari and Illiaz Mohammed from Guardians of Tomorrow, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to making a difference in the community. In this Q&A, get to know the faces behind this remarkable organisation as we delve into their inspiring journey, mission, and future plans. Can you share with us a bit about your organisation and the services it provides? Guardians of Tomorrow was established as we saw a gap in the community that needed to be filled and to make an impact on the lives of the most vulnerable. We help the homeless and those on the brink of homelessness by providing free food, clothing, shoes, blankets/

linen. We also have a program that focuses on helping people combat social isolation, depression, and disconnection. We achieve this by offering a volunteer program at our two Op shops in Logan, providing a sense of belonging and a platform for open conversations. Many individuals find solace in this program, which often leads to discussions about personal challenges such as domestic violence or other issues. In such cases, we provide appropriate referrals and support. It is a safe place for women to come. It is their SAFEHOUSE. It's also a great place for individuals looking to improve their English while interacting with customers. We also run a basic retail work experience program, offering participants an opportunity to gain valuable retail experience and receive references for future employment. Moreover, we conduct one-hour sessions to help individuals struggling with form filling and preparing for citizenship tests. Registration with us is necessary to access this service. One of our most cherished programs is FRUITBITE, which delivers fresh fruits to schools across Logan. This program addresses

the critical issue of food insecurity among children, ensuring that approximately 200 kids per week per school have access to nutritious fruits. For some of these children, these fruits may be the only meal they receive all day. Since the start of the program 2 weeks ago we have provided fruits to over 2000 children. You could only imagine the impact it will have once we have done it for longer periods to come. Our goal is to expand this program Queensland wide to reach more schools in need. Tell us about yourself and how did this organisation come about? Razia Ansari and Illiaz Mohammed, we spend all day every day in Logan and our background is originally from Fiji. We both are from backgrounds where we were not fortunate to get whatever we wanted. We saw our parents struggle to provide food, working 2 jobs and the hard times they went through for us. And now that we are blessed to have what we have, it's time for us to hold someone else's hand and to guide them through the hardships to success as much as we can. We want to be the shining light that guides them and advocates for them. Many people are suffering and don't know what to do or where to go and we are their GUARDIANS, THE Guardian of their Tomorrow. Looking ahead, what are your goals and plans for the future? Our primary goal is to extend our reach and impact as many lives as possible. We will continue our current initiatives while striving to expand with the support of the government and the community. We have identified a

significant need within the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community in Logan, and we intend to address these issues on a larger scale. Our plan includes offering services that can make a more substantial difference and fill existing gaps. Leveraging our successful business backgrounds, we aspire to mentor individuals towards employment and self-employment opportunities. We envision Guardians of Tomorrow becoming a household name, committed to delivering the outcomes the Logan community desires and addressing critical needs. For those who want to support your organisation, what are the easiest ways to get involved or make a difference? If you're interested in contributing to our cause, there are several ways to get involved. We're always on the lookout for volunteers to assist at our Op shops. Additionally, if you possess expertise in areas that can benefit individuals from CALD backgrounds we welcome your involvement. Even if it is 1 hour per week teaching basic English, filling out forms, sewing or sharing insights on cultural differences and workplace expectations. As we do have Op shops we are always looking for donations. If you have clothes, furniture, shoes, bags etc.. that you no longer need, please donate them to us. Everything sold out of our shop 100% goes to helping back into the community. If you want to do a monetary donation then you can go through our website www. guardiansoftomorrow.org.au to the Donate button. If you would like to sponsor a fruit box for the FRUITBITE PROGRAM per week then please reach out to us info@guardiansoftomorrow.org. au.

Feb. 19 - Mar. 20

Mar 21 - Apr.19

You may feel the urge to put your loved one on a pedestal today. You want to see him or her as the perfect mate for you. You're willing to go to great lengths to bring this person pleasure. You're wearing your rose-colored glasses, so very little will convince you of anything but the fact that things are perfect and beautiful.

The aspect of the day will emphasise your ability to put feelings into words, and possibly thoughts into action. If you've had communication difficulties and are ready to clear the air, now is as good a time as any. If you want to increase communication with your boss or your children, now is a good time to initiate new avenues of dialogue.

Today's transit gives you the energy to communicate with those you love in an effective manner. Sometimes you can be too soft, or afraid of how criticism will make the other person feel. Today's aspect can bring a frustrating time for you, as you may not know exactly where you stand. The energy at this time is fluctuating, whereas you like to know exactly what is what! Take a deep breath when you feel frustration brewing, and another, and another. It's important to get aerobic exercise this week, and to stretch out your muscles so they can fill with fresh oxygen.

Playful, carefree, and animated, this is a time to enjoy with a partner or alone. You will enjoy reading and writing, find it easy to communicate with just about anyone, and find it equally difficult to get bored. HELPING HAND FOR FURRY FRIENDS Levy goes a long way in conservation efforts

F

ive Logan households are preparing to welcome new neighbours of a furry kind into their backyards as part of a Logan City Council initiative. The endangered greater glider, Australia’s largest native gliding mammal, will be given a helping hand when the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland installs 20 nest boxes at five Chambers Flat properties. The project is one of 39 that received a share of almost $200,000 in EnviroGrants funding to support innovative conservation projects and wildlife carers in the City of Logan. Council’s Environment Levy funds the EnviroGrants program, among other awardwinning conservation and restoration initiatives. In the 2022/2023, the Environment Levy also supported: •

An additional 139 kilowatts of rooftop solar on Logan City Council buildings, saving an

estimated $34,000 in annual electricity costs and 150 tonnes of greenhouse emissions. •

The continued growth of the Bushcare and Trail Care volunteer programs, with more than 226 registered volunteers donating 1215 volunteer hours to enhance the city’s natural environment.

The largest edition of the Logan Eco Action Festival, with a record 10,000 attendees.

Continued investment in waterway and river recovery programs, with more than 15,000 native shrubs and grasses planted along key waterways and biodiversity corridors with nearly 10,000 pieces of rubbish also collected.

Environmental Conservation partnerships with 950 properties spanning over 6000 hectares through the Land for Wildlife and Habitat Connections programs.

Environment Chair Councillor Jon Raven said the Environment Levy is vital in facilitating key conservation projects across the city. “Our ratepayers invest in Logan’s natural landscapes and native animals not just for today, but for our children to enjoy in the future,” Cr Raven said. “We know how important our green spaces and wildlife are to the community, and it’s important we use the Environment Levy to look after them.”

Council’s efforts to support a cleaner and greener future were bolstered by recognition on the national and international stage. Unicorns of the Sea By Jasmin Lim

Have you ever wondered if unicorns are real? Well, they are!

N

arwhals are known for their unique unicorn-like tusk but sadly it is only the males that have this amazing feature. Did you know a male Narwhal’s tusk is actually its tooth! Scientists don’t yet know what on earth these tusks are for, they have only observed these playful creatures jousting and using them like swords. Even though Narwhals are the smallest of 90 whale species, they can dive down to a whopping 1600m! This shows that these incredible sea creatures are very strong because at that depth, the water pressure is like 600kg

52 | Logan Guide

Jasmin pressing on every square centimeter of their body. Furthermore, a Narwhal’s habitat is the freezing Artic waters surrounding Canada, Russia and Greenland. Travelling up to 160km per day, Narwhals also cover vast distances across the seas. Surprisingly, they have also been seen swimming in pods up to a few hundred! Although many people think that Narwhals have teeth, they do not – except for the males’ one tusky tooth which does not help with eating; therefore, their diet only consists of squid and small fish which they suck up and swallow whole. Tragically, Narwhals used to be hunted for their tusks and meat which contributed to a giant downfall in their population. Now protected across the many oceans of the Northern Hemisphere, these majestic unicorns of the sea will hopefully continue to amaze us for many centuries to come.

They are no more! By Rishaad Rahman

What do you think would happen if the world had no phones?

A

bout 150 years ago, people could only speak face to face if they wanted to communicate. Back then when a robbery happened, no one could call the police for help. Even today, it is really hard to organise anything if you do not have a phone. It is interesting to look at what phones were like in the past, what they are like today and what phones might be like in the future. In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the first telephone which didn’t even have dials or numbers. This first type of telephone was extremely slow and difficult to operate which was very frustrating. By 1930, dials with numbers made it easier to use. During the 1960’s, buttons with numbers were introduced but these still relied on cords and wires. Finally, in 1980, phones became wireless and cordless which allowed people to move around anywhere and talk on their phone. This changed the world! Thankfully, phones today are much smarter than phones in the past. Today it is so helpful to use mobile phones which don’t have wires. It is also great that the batteries last about a day or two. Furthermore, what is even more convenient is that phones today have touch screens and an app store where you can download many apps like the weather app. But, how will the phones of today transform in the future?

Rishaad Imagine what future phones might be like! They will definitely be super entertaining and extraordinarily smart. They might even follow you by floating and if someone tries to steal it, their hand might get an electric shock and be numb for 5 minutes. Future phones might recognise your voice and you can tell it to go to any app and it will tell you whatever information you desire to know. Future phones will be tremendous… like robots. Significantly, everyone needs to communicate so people will keep inventing new ways. By looking at phones in the past and phones today, we can have fun imagining what these communication devices might be like in the future. Even though we use phones a lot today, in the future, people might communicate using totally different devices – instead of phones, we might have tiny robots or transformers or even floating devices; and the phones like we have today, are no more!

WHAT IS

SKINNY FAT?

T

he term 'skinny fat' might make you do a double take. It's a bit of health jargon that's as interesting as it is perplexing. Essentially, it refers to people who look thin but actually have a higher proportion of body fat compared to muscle. Let’s dive into what 'skinny fat' really means for your health. Beyond Appearances Someone might appear slim but could be carrying more fat than is healthy, especially around crucial areas like the abdomen. This is the essence of being 'skinny fat'. Despite a normal weight, their body composition isn't as healthy as it seems. Hidden Health Risks The main concern here isn't about looks; it's about health. People who are 'skinny fat' may face similar health risks to those who are visibly overweight, like increased chances of heart

disease and diabetes. It's all because of the hidden fat that's not immediately obvious. The Importance of Muscle Mass A combination of factors contributes to someone becoming 'skinny fat'. A sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary choices, and sometimes genetics play a part. It's often a result of not enough muscle-building activity and a diet lacking in essential nutrients. Recognising 'Skinny Fat' The great news is that being 'skinny fat' can be addressed. Incorporating strength training into your exercise routine and focusing on a balanced, nutritious diet can help improve your body composition. Turning 'Skinny Fat' Around Understanding 'skinny fat' is key to recognising that health is more than just about weight. It's about the balance of fat and muscle in your body and taking steps to improve it for your overall well-being. In a nutshell, the 'skinny fat' concept is a fascinating reminder that health is multidimensional. It's a blend of how you nourish your body, how you move, and how you build strength. So, let's look beyond the scale and focus on what truly defines health
