With over a 1km of field space and off street parking for over 300 cars, the venue is the ideal community event!
The Bayside Wake Park is an amazing local venue for locals - whether you’re a beginner or a pro, they have all that you need for a day of fun on the water! With a canteen & bar, bbqs for hire and lots of green space, you can make it a day out for the whole family.
As the Wake Park is a membership based community, there’s squads for every age and skill level - the kids love to get in on the action, but there’s also a new division known as the ‘old farts’ for those who are still young at heart! The major annual competition, Jackpot Series, starts this month on Saturday 11th December, with the 2 remaining dates held on 5th February and 9th April 2022.
Coinciding with the Jackpot series events, there’s a market happening with food trucks, handmade stalls, jumping castles, face painting and live entertainment. This dog-friendly event has something for the whole family - Dad can have a beer from the bar and watch the competition while Mum browses through stalls with beautifully crafted products from local artisans, ticking off her Christmas shopping list while the kids get
their face painted and jump on the jumping castle. Then they can sit and enjoy the live Christmas music together while eating some gourmet delights from one of the food, dessert and drink vendors! Santa will be arriving at the December event via wakeboard at 3pm, showing us his smooth skills and an entrance that kids will remember for a lifetime! He’ll move across to our photo tent where families can come and get their photos taken - Santa will give a present to every child and a treat to every well-behaved pup that comes too! Santa will grace the wakeboard one more time at 6pm, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to come down and see his skills that very few people ever knew he had. Who knew Santa was into extreme sports?
The February event will see all things love and romance come to the market for Valentines Day and the April event will be Easter themed, with special guest the Easter Bunny visiting - make sure you save the dates!
So come down to the Bayside Wake Park this on December 11th for an unforgettable day of fun!
The creation of a strong well-trained local workforce to fill local jobs is a key focus of a new employment initiative launched today by City of Logan Mayor Darren Power.
The Mayor’s Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce will develop programs with employers, service providers and training organisations to ensure skills being taught align with available local jobs.
The taskforce will have a strong focus on enhancing employment opportunities for Logan youth. Unemployment in Logan is 9.1 per cent (ABS: June 2021) with youth unemployment a staggering 17.6 per cent.
Councillor Power said those numbers underline the importance of getting his Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce operating as soon as possible.
“We want to get local jobseekers involved in training programs that will give them skills that
align with the needs of local businesses,” Cr Power said.
“We also want to leverage the strong desire among local businesses to support our residents through education, training, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
“We want to develop a willing workforce that has the skills and training to apply for jobs not just here in Logan but across the state and country.”
Economic Development Chair, Deputy Mayor Jon Raven said Logan City Council would continue to seek funding from the Australian and Queensland governments to support economic development and jobs growth in the city.
“Everyone knows how good it is to do business in Logan and we’re seeing record investment in our city,” Councillor Raven said.
“We want to remove the barriers to employment and upskill our residents so that Logan job seekers can work for local businesses.”
The taskforce, chaired by the Mayor, will develop a Local Jobs Action Plan to:
• Identify key employment priorities and local labour needs
• Support and drive employment and training opportunities across Logan
• Implement programs and solutions to address local workforce issues
• Investigate improving the Logan Jobs platform
It will also appoint an Employment Support Coordinator to help deliver the core activities of the taskforce and engage with industry leaders and external stakeholders.
Imaging Solutions, which manufacturers healthcare x-ray aprons and other cutting edge products, is a City of Logan company that has been quick to embrace the benefits of training and hiring local workers.
Several of its current employees undertook a specialist machinist training course with TAFE Queensland and a new in-house training program is planned soon specifically targeted at creating jobs for local school-leavers and youth.
“We know there are a lot of people in Logan looking for work and those who undertake our next training program will definitely be offered jobs in our local manufacturing sites,” Imaging Solutions Chief Executive Officer Glenn Honey said.
The company’s Deputy CEO, Dr John Kapeleris, added: “Imaging Solutions is committed to developing a custom-designed training program that is aligned with new skills development to grow and enrich jobs in Logan.”
After being adopted at today’s committee meeting, the Mayor’s Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce now goes to next week’s Ordinary Council meeting for endorsement.
City of Logan residents will be treated to a feast of live original music in their own backyard in December.
A mix of established and emerging artists will perform 2 free gigs hosted by Logan Live.
The scheduled Logan Live Originals series (all from 5pm-8pm) are:
Sautrday, Dec 4th
A country, roots and folk concert at Beenleigh Town Square featuring Jaylee, Mama Juju and The Jam Tawrts, Rae Leigh and Briana Dinsdale and;
Sautrday, Dec 11th
A rock/punk night at Logan West Community Centre featuring Couch Surfers, Sloj, August River Band and Machine Age.
City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said the Logan Live Originals events would allow the community to sample the City of Logan’s live music scene.
“It has been difficult to hold live music events over the past two years because of the pandemic restrictions,” Cr Koranski said.
“We look forward to the community experiencing live original music from some of the amazing musical talent we have in Logan.
“The list also includes a number of artists who have been part of Logan Live over the past four years.”
Bookings are essential for the two events and can be made by visiting loganlive.com.au
There are no crowd limits for the for the December 4th event but the December 11th one will be restricted to 120 people.
Logan Live is an initiative of Logan City Council and supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and educational partner JMC Academy.
On Saturday, the 20th of November, we the Logan City Guides team celebrated our very first anniversary!
It was a chance for us to come together and celebrate the fantastic year we have had, surrounded by family, friends and those who have helped and supported us along the way. It also provided an opportunity for us to say thank you and champion the business that have become a part of the Logan City Guides family.
“It was a fantastic night! We had a great time getting to know the other businesses featured in the guide”, stated another guest.
The event was hosted at the Monkey Tree Brewery in Underwood. Located on Compton Road,
the local brewery provided a spacious yet cosy environment. Having heard great things about the venue, I was excited the experience it for myself. Guests enjoyed an open bar, where their large range of beers, ciders, wines and soft drinks were on offer.
Guests were entertained throughout the night by the talented voice of Laura Thompson as she performed the soundtrack of the decades. As a relative of Buddy Holly, Laura is a natural performer and has been since she was 16; going on to be a part of the first band that backed Dean Vegas' Australian Elvis tribute and has worked with other performers.
The MC, Nicki Christensen, owner of FLOWERHUB and Southside Flower Market, kicked off the night. Tasked with keeping the night flowing, Nicki regularly took to the mike to introduce the LCG team and local businesses, discussed the development of the magazine over the past 12 months and teased the crowd with upcoming projects. He even belted out a rendition of Queens ‘We are the Champions’ to the delight of the crowd (and to rapturous applause and cheers).
The event was catered by The Bun Mobile, who served a selection of delicious Bao buns, including chicken, pork, wagyu and a vegetarian option. These hand-crafted steam buns were complemented by sides of chips. Platers of food were also provided to the guest to enjoy for entrees. By the time dinner was served, the room was abuzz with conversation, laughter and smiling faces.
The night round down with several of the crowd took to the stage for a few rounds of karaoke. Some of the standout performances include Jason from Logan Office Spaces rendition of Bon Jovi's 'Wanted Dead or Alive' and Tina from Helloworld Travel Rochedale South recital of Eagles classic 'Hotel California', were crowd favourites.
To cap off the night, guests were serenaded by Simon, Logan City Guides publisher as he performed a rendition of ‘I can't help falling in
love with you’ accompanied by Laura, as he played on his guitar.
The night was a massive success and a positive sign for things to come for Logan City Guide and the Logan community.
I enjoy being a part of events like these because they allow me to get to know Logan's heart, its community. I love meeting the people, organisations and businesses that make up this diverse and vibrant community that is Logan City.
It has been fantastic to see the amazing response the guides have had within the community and I am extremely proud of the work we have done as a team. Look how far we have come.
I cannot wait to see what the next year will bring!
So, here’s to 2022!
The COVID-19 Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have recently been approved for children over 12 years in Australia. This has the potential to increase conflict between separated parents.
A child’s health is the responsibility of his or her parents. The law requires a child’s parents to consult with each other and make a genuine effort to make joint decisions about long term matters such as health. Without agreement, the Family Court must resolve the dispute.
In the case of Duke-Randall & Randall [2014] the Court ordered, against the mother’s objection, that the children be given what may be classified as routine child vaccines finding it was in their best interests to do so because the risks for those children were insignificant and the benefits far exceeded those risks.
More recently the Family Court in Covington & Covington (2021) again dealing with what may be called routine childhood immunisations ordered the children be vaccinated despite the mother’s opposition.
Where the Court is required to decide these vaccination disputes between parents, the primary consideration is whether it is in the best interests of the child to be vaccinated. In other words, it is a risk versus benefits analysis based on available medical evidence.
It seems inevitable that the court will be called upon to rule whether Covid-19 vaccines are routine or not, and whether the risks outweigh the benefits for the child.
The added complexity of shared parenting during a pandemic has resulted in the Court establishing a National COVID-19 listing to deal with urgent COVID-19 issues such as vaccinations.
Hans Christian Anderson once said, “to travel is to live”. If this is true then Logan local and travel enthusiast Tina Pizzoni has done a lot of living since becoming a travel agent in 2002.
However, when the Covid 19 pandemic swept across the globe and countries slammed their borders shut, Tina, like many in the travel and tourism industry suffered greatly and struggled to survive.
Despite this Tina’s spark for life never dimmed. Her passion, tenacity, infectious positivity and love of travel carried her through the tough times.
Now with borders opening up and the world finding its new ‘normal’, what does that mean for Tina and the travel industry?
How did you celebrate when you heard things were opening back up again?
I actually haven't really celebrated as such – not yet. Although seeing the international borders
open and flights in the air, is truly amazing, I don't think it will feel real until the QLD borders open and we are permitted to travel freely with restrictions.
How and what made you keep your Travel Agency door open during the tough times?
I love what I do. I love my clients and I love being a business in this community. There were occasions when locals would call into the office and drop off some chocolates to us and say "keep going". They weren't clients, just incredible people. The Centre Management has been amazing and I appreciate the government support grants that I have received.
What are some of the favourite and safe destinations that people should consider going to?
If we refer back to my November issue of the LCG, Fiji is always a winner in my eyes. But honestly, as the world awakens and more people
are vaccinated there won't be a destination that I don't consider safe.
Should travel agents get more respect as travel professionals? Yes, I believe we should. I also believe that there also needs to be an education on what we do and perhaps a new title to clearly communicate our role in the travel buying process.
What insurance must one consider when travelling?
Travel insurance is a must. As the old saying goes 'if you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel'. You do need to read your Product Disclosure Statement carefully and be aware of the inclusions of the policy. Unfortunately, it's not a subject where ignorance is bliss!
Now on Ladies Long Weekend (LLW) ...
What made you start this project?
LLW was created to share my love of life, travel, food and wine with women who might sometimes forget to put themselves first. I find that all too often women put family, work or other commitments ahead of their own wellbeing. My belief from a professional and personal perspective is that a long weekend away will replenish them and bring them back feeling ready to give it their all once more.
How many trips have you organised since inception?
The first LLW was just prior to COVID and we travelled to Kuala Lumpur. I have since hosted 2 two other departures to Adelaide and the Granite Belt.
And the favourite weekend so far?
I think that would have to be Adelaide. We had such an amazing group of women and many
new friends were made. A lot of these ladies are joining me in Hobart.
LLW is heading to the Whitsundays on the 25th of November which is exciting. I'm looking forward to fresh, salty air and cocktails. We are also hosting a garden Party themed 'Social Soiree' on the 04th December – all are welcome.
Any lady of any age is welcome. We have had ladies ranging in age from 35 through to 74 and everywhere in between. Age is not an issue at LLW, we welcome all ladies with a fabulous fun attitude and love for life.

“It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, it’s a Wing Delivery Drone!”
Drones rule the sky in Logan City. What are they and how can you get a delivery through Wing?
Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), is an on-demand drone delivery service that has been delivering to Logan residents via drones for the past two years; working with local businesses and major global partners to deliver food, goods, and over-thecounter pharmaceuticals via drone.
From Wing’s early days, delivering to a small group of customers in Marsden and Crestmead in 2019, they’re now making thousands of deliveries each week to more Logan suburbsquickly cementing Logan's place as the drone capital of the world.
September 2021 marked Wing’s second anniversary in Logan and it has been a busy year for the Wing delivery drones, with over 50,000 deliveries to Logan customers in the last eight months alone.
What distinguishes the Logan operation from the various tests and trials going on around the world, is that it is already a live, automated, and on-demand service.
Wing’s drones are custom-designed to deliver packages safely, reliably and very quickly. Once a customer submits an order via the Wing mobile app (available on the App Store or on Google Play), the drone flies to pick up the package at Wing’s delivery facility.
The drone then climbs to flying altitude and proceeds to the designated delivery destination in several minutes – the fastest delivery time to date, from order to delivery at the customer’s house is 2 minutes and 47 seconds!
With a wingspan of about 1.5 metres, Wing drones are able to carry packages of around 1.5 kgs through the air at speeds of over 110 km/h; while Wing’s software analyses the weather and terrain for dangers while navigating directly to the customer - whether at home or the office.
Once it reaches the customer's destination, the drone slows down, hovers, descends to a delivery height of 7 metres above ground, lowers the package to the ground on a tether and automatically releases the package in the desired delivery area.
Some of the businesses that are using the Wing service includes cafes, chemists and hardware stores - Check out the full list of businesses using Wing's services on their website, https://wing. com/en_au/australia/logan/.
This cutting-edge technology has enabled Wing’s customers in Logan to start their days with more than 10,000 cups of fresh barista-made coffee in the last year, delivered right to their homes. When Logan children made that transition to remote learning, parents had ordered more than 1,700 snack packs to keep break times interesting, and dinner was covered with more than 1,200 hot chooks flying home just in time.
With its quick response time and continued success, it is easy to see why drone delivery is becoming increasingly popular with local businesses. Drones are the way of the future for local businesses deliveries. Just ask Emma and Frank, owners of Rege’s Hot Box, who started using Wing in June 2021 and has not looked back since.
Since coming on board, they have delivered a range of freshly made food to Logan residents –including a variety of burgers, sandwiches and
“It is a revolutionary way to deliver things to customers and I think it’s great for small businesses” stated Emma, co-owner of Rege's Hot Box, Beenleigh. “It has been really good for us. People who have never heard of us before are getting to know us through the Wing app.”

Certainly, we are all enriched when every family, every community group, and every person works together, ensuring that absolutely, everything good goes to the child or young adult, equipping and encouraging them on their way.

Building your Brand Reputation and your Core Business Foundation is building the longevity of your organisation. Strategies can change; however, your core foundations stay fixed.
Strategies and practices need to adapt to a changing world and changing customers’ needs. However, if you want to build a brand and a reputation, your Core ideology –your core foundation: goals, beliefs, and values should remain the same.
So, what are your Core Goals – Purpose, Vision, and Mission? What holds your business together, it is the roof and structure?
This is what you stand for and why you exist, what you want to become, achieve, create and build. Your brand reputation-what people say when you’re not there.
Core Purpose: is the over aching roof under which your company sits, guiding everything you do. It is not the same as Vision, Mission, or Values. It is the emotion and passion of your WHY. Why you are doing what you are doing needs to be clear, concise, and in everyday language.
Core Vision: WHAT do you aspire to be? What is the future you want to create? Be innovative, challenging, and inspiring.
Core Mission: HOW do you want to deliver that vision? What is your Niche? What are you doing for your customers?
Core Values: These support your organisations vision “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s the same, but you leave them all over everything you do”. Do you have 5 Core Values?
Core culture: How you lead and treat people impacts everything – for better or worse. Your purpose, principles, practices, philosophy, and priorities. These are the behaviours shared by your team.

The team at Belluccio Property Group have recently developed a brand-new Beauty Lounge in Marsden.
Belluccio Beauty is a brand-new concept designed by Mehar and Haroon Sufi. The idea is to create a boutique beauty lounge with a difference.
The concept is to create an 'all in one’ Beauty Lounge and experience. Why go to separate beauticians; when you can receive a range of services in one location!
The team at Belluccio Beauty have partnered with two local beauticians to bring a great experience to the local community.
Monique Nel, who runs Nel Beauty Co was the first to see the opportunity and met with Mehar and Haroon to discuss how they could work together. Nel Beauty Co has a treatment room within the building. Their services include waxing, luxe brows, tinting. They can even bundle it with a 24k gold eye mask if you want to try something new!
A month later, Carissa Hatton of YG Beauty approached Mehar and Haroon. They saw the opportunity to set up a boutique nail studio within the business.
Carissa is a professional nail artist and loves to get creative when it comes to your nails. Carissa has a design to suit every occasion, whether it is a special event, Christmas or even a Halloween Theme Party! YG Beauty also provides eyelash extension services.
If you are looking for a range of services or just looking to get your makeup, waxing, eyelashes or nails done, give the team at Belluccio Beauty a call. They can assist with booking you in for a service and answer any questions you may have.

In early November, I was thrilled to join my fellow Helloworld franchisees and a small selection of our industry partners on a weekend getaway to the South Burnett and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The last 21 months have been very challenging for many industries, including the Travel Industry, and it was truly wonderful to finally get together with my colleagues to support one another and plan for the ‘way out’ of this COVID world.
Highlights of the trip included some of the incredible wineries of the region – Dusty Hill Winery, Clovely Estate, Kingsley Grove Estate & the quaint Taabinga Station Winery & Homestay. Our tastebuds were also tantalized with an incredible breakfast at Whipbird Café & lunch at the local Joe’s Grand Hotel a dinner amongst the vines and prior to our return to Brisbane
we called in to the local Farm 2 Fork Collective where we all bought a variety of amazing local produce.
On the Sunday morning I rose early to join a small group of ‘over achievers’ as we walked just a small section (it was still 13km!!!) of the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail trail. This Rail Trail includes Queensland’s longest sealed rail trail of 44km from Kingaroy to Murgon. It was a wonderful walk and despite my (very) tried and sore body it was very fulfilling.
It is a fabulous destination and one I haven’t considered before, but if you’re looking to visit a destination that isn’t too far away, please consider the South Burnett.
If you have a group of friends, please reach out and I would be more than happy to put together an itinerary similar to what we experienced.
I thought I would also share some very eloquent and insightful words from one of our industry partners, Jerry Pilgrim of Adventure World, on our return from the weekend. If you’re struggling, please remember to reach out to a friend, family or colleague because as the saying goes and how we all felt on the return ‘A Burden shared is a Burden halved’.
‘As I sit here and process what just ‘happened’ I can tell you I feel somewhat mentally lighter compared to last week, which is in direct contrast to a) my waistline and b) my ankles after walking the trail yesterday.
On reflection we’ve obviously been denied our tribe and through no fault of our own become isolated and allowed to stew in our own fears and projections. Professional travelling is all about reading the future winds and predicting the trail ahead to avoid peril. The events of the last 20 months have significantly traumatised us as our usual forecasting tools don’t work. They broke our compass and went for our livelihoods at the same time. Feelings felt like facts, but they weren’t facts. They were just feelings and they scared us. But like all storms, they must end, or you just get better at sailing in them. That’s why we all feel stronger after the weekend. We shared our trials from the storm. We worked on ourselves and we feel the benefit now. I’m going to remember this the next time I am having a ‘moment’
When everything seems to be against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. Henry Ford

Anew state of the art laundromat has opened in Loganholme! Laundry Today opened late November on Bryants Road in Loganholme, bringing a resource which the community had been without for several years.
With the self-serve laundry operation, Jason said they saw an opportunity to fill a need which some Logan-area business leaders told him exists for numerous local residents.
“It’s been something we’ve been trying to do for a number of years,” he added, “I wanted to provide a service that will help Mums and Dads, so that they can have more time for themselves and their families”.
Laundry Today uses self-service machines that are user friendly with step-by-step instructions and clearly labelled buttons that anyone can follow along with ease. This, combined with the
inbuilt detergent and softener, and everything is taken care of - all you have to do is bring your clothes!
In preparation for the laundromat’s opening, Jason remodelled the space introducing new flooring and drywall as well as plumbing, electrical and façade updates. Including new four 10kg, two 14kg and two 18 kg washers and eight 18kg dryers were installed — capable of handling personal as well as commercial laundry needs. There is also a dedicated 14kg load washer for pet laundry.
Although coin-operated machines have been a common feature at self-serve laundries through the years, Laundry Today instead features a cashless system, where customers can pay the fees for the washers and dryers via their card or mobile. People can also download and pay via the Dexter live app.
The laundromat is open 24 hours, with round the clock access. In the future, Jason plans to offer a full-service including ironing and pick up & drop off facilities.
For more information about Landry Today, visit their Facebook page, https://www. facebook.com/laundrytoday.au or email info.landrytoday@gmail.com.
Summer break: that time when kids are finally free of classroom instruction and mounds of homework to do and are left with pretty much nothing while they’re home for a couple of weeks.
Of course, this year thanks to the pandemic, millions of children are already home— experiencing home learning for the first time. And though parents might be tempted to sit kids down with daily math problems and reading exercises to keep their brains stimulated, may not be the best approach over the break.
Using summer break as a frantic opportunity to catch up with your own child likely isn’t going to increase any test scores. But by spending quality time with their children and letting them learn through experiences, parents can help kids keep their brains engaged—and that will help make sure they’re ready to continue learning once they return to school in January.
Need some ideas to get started? Check out these fun activities to keep your child’s brain engaged over the summer break.
Spending time outdoors is an excellent way to stimulate kids’ brains. While exploring,
encourage kids to look out for animals as well as sticks, leaves, and other materials, then imagine what crafts they could use them for at home.
Parents can encourage kids to use measuring cups and ask them to double, quadruple or halve recipes. Parents can also talk about how various ingredients, like yeast, affect food. That’s what cooking is, using science to create something delicious.
Focus on games and challenges that require the family to work together: complex jigsaw puzzles, or even charades. When you have to work together, it brings out the best in everyone. You see people helping each other instead of putting each other down or being so competitive.
There’s so much learning that can go on that you can sneak in—the kids just won’t know.

Kristina, Maree and Julie would like to thank everyone within the community that have rallied behind each other through another very challenging year.
We personally would like to send out a heartfelt message of love and thoughts to those of you that have lost loved ones, especially this year.
We know how difficult your first Christmas will be without them. The reminders of the ones we have lost become clearer during the holidays. Chances are you will drink from their cup or throw their favourite blanket over your knees at night. You’ll laugh at a joke or smell their favourite dish and look around, wishing they could share the joys of Christmas with you again.
Remember, these memories are how they remain with us. Their influence is present in remembrances, stories, and even gestures you or your children picked up from them. Each little reminder of the moments that you shared together confirms your love for them.
Light a candle of remembrance to honour their legacy and speak their names around the table as you toast to another year passing, and to a new one to come.
We provide the finest, most considered and compassionate funeral service, one that physically and emotionally nurtures all involved.

Roast beef might sound fancy and complicated to make, but it’s actually quite simple! Below, we break down what’s most important to know when preparing this classic dish.
There’s no single cut of beef that is necessary to make roast beef. Some common cuts include: Top round roast, Top sirloin roast, Bottom round roast, Eye of round roast
This is where you can really get creative. We kept things simple in this recipe: just thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Feel free to swap in any of your favorite herbs (sage, parsley, oregano etc.) or use dried if you prefer.
We like to bring pretty much any meat we’re cooking to room temperature—especially big pieces of meat like turkey breasts, whole chickens, and roasts like this one!
1 (2kg) round roast
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme leaves
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1. Recommended: let roast sit uncovered at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours.
2. Preheat oven to 230°C. In a small bowl, combine oil, garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Rub all over roast.
3. Place roast in roasting pan fitted with a roasting rack. Roast for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 160°C and roast 1 hours 45 minutes more for medium, or 2 hours for medium well done.
4. Remove from oven and let rest 15 to 30 minutes before serving.

Yummy, delicious, tasty food made fresh and served with a smile. Nicole Noble, a chef of over 20 years, has created one of Brisbane and Logan’s favourite and most experienced catering companies, Char Baby; known for producing beautiful gourmet catering for events all over southeast Queensland.
From gourmet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners to picnic hampers, canapés, and cakes made of cheese, Char Baby caters for all events including weddings, corporate events, private and cocktail parties.
Discover how Char Baby Moveable Feasts has allowed Nicole to express her creativity while giving her the opportunity to share her passion for food and love of the flavours of the world with as many people as possible.
When and how did you start Char Baby Catering?
Originally, I started Char Baby Moveable Feast in early 2014 as a food truck, Char Baby World BBQ. By 2015, the idea had evolved and I had started mostly doing catering with the truck.
The Char Baby concept came to me during a break between owning busy suburban cafés and I was looking for a new challenge.
I had a strong catering background from doing functions during my apprenticeship at Darling Mills as well as all the Yacht work and private chef work, I did while I was overseas. During the time I had La Mer at Manly, I also was the caterer for charter companies there and the WMYC.
What is your cooking experience and qualifications?
I have been cooking since I was 18, so I guess that is nearly 29 years of cooking! This makes me feel a little old, but also very privileged that I still love my primary business which is catering events.
Once I finished my 4-year Chef apprenticeship (the old style) in Sydney, I went on and did an extension on Asian Commercial Cookery.
Throughout my years as a chef, I have had so many great experiences; from restaurant, gourmet food store operator, cooking in a restaurant in Marmaris, Turkey for a season, then
being a private chef in Switzerland and on a contract yacht in the Med for 7 years for Ecce Navigo.
For 7 years, I had a Cafe La Mer in Manly, then I had Ascot La’loopa for further 3 years, while food trucking then going back to catering. I still have the tapas bar in Logan as well. So, I have done some interesting things!
Have you done a lot of catering work around the Logan area?
I have done a few private events in Logan, but mostly I seem to be doing events in Brisbane, Somerset, Dayboro, or Ipswich as well as up and down the coast.
What type of events and style of cooking do you focus on?
We have no set type or style which is why we are so unique. We can and do so many different events; for example, country weddings, company launches, private home parties, corporate expo’s, cocktail parties, construction site lunch boxes, event space catering all over Brisbane and the surrounding areas. Our versatility means that we can cater and customise our service for every event. Each event has its own style that we love to make come to life.
What can people look forward to when they engage in your services?
The most common feedback we get is wonderful food and service. My catering staff have been
with me for a long time, they have the experience and knowledge to offer flexible service as each event is unique. It is most important that you have fashioned the service to accommodate the crowd!
We aren’t cookie-cutter catering; we want to make the event come to life with our food and service. We aim to be a “chameleon”, working hard in the background to elevate your function or event so it becomes a unique, standout experience.
To enquire about event dates, or to find out how Char Baby can assist with your next event, visit their website, http://www.charbaby.com.au/ or email charbabyfeast@gmail.com or phone Nicole on 0458 765 404.
It’s summertime! A time for no worries and less clothing, pool parties, summer flings and beach days. However, while you are out enjoying the summer rays, your hair is stressed out. Along with the warmth comes the sun, salt water, and chlorine. They dry your hair out and can cause damage to it.
So how do you keep your hair cool, while everything else is heating up?
Stay shady.
Wear a hat or sit in the shade. It’s summering 101. The best way to avoid sun damage to your strands is to avoid it altogether. If you’ll be spending lots of time outdoors, wear a widebrimmed hat. Not only will it keep your strands from getting scorched, but it will also protect your scalp and ears, areas that are vulnerable to skin cancer.
Rinse ASAP: as soon as pool-side.
Try to rinse your hair after a swim. Salt and chlorine belong in the water, not your hair. If there isn’t a shower nearby, keep a spray bottle filled with fresh water.
Switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
You may be washing your hair more frequently to deal with summer’s sweat and grime. Try using a clarifying, or anti-residue, shampoo once a week to clear away product build-up and chemicals. Just be sure to follow with a deep-conditioning treatment.
Skip the hot tools.
At least once or twice a week, give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. For beach babe waves, let it air-dry in a braid or a low bun.

Helen joined the Logan Artists Association in 2015; where she learnt the craft of pottery. Helen found herself drawn to hand-building and has been tutoring classes in that technique for approximately 2 years.
In Helen’s classes, one of her objectives is to dispel the myth that a person must possess the talent of Michelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci to produce art. To achieve this, Helen works one-on-one with each of her students, teaching them the techniques that will enable them to build upon and draw out their own innate talents to achieve their goals.
Many students come to pottery for its therapeutic qualities. Helen’s other objective is to facilitate a supportive environment, fun and where friendships can flourish.
In Helen’s own work she gravitates towards form over function.
She utilises hand-building techniques to sculpt pieces that have character and, in essence, make people smile. During the production process, Helen enjoys pushing the clay to its parameters, constantly experimenting, and creating serendipitous outcomes.
She also utilises other mediums such as wood, fabric and acrylics to add another dimension to her work.
The results are in – one of Australia’s best indicators of youth mental health, the 2021 MyStrengths Youth Wellbeing Report, has revealed the most common causes of stress and worry amongst teenagers.
“Some of the findings affirm our suspicion around sleep habits and the direct impact on mental health, and the causes of stress and worry,” says MyStrengths founder Dan Hardie.
“However, other findings have come as a surprise, particularly around those who teenagers turn to for support, and the way they view the impact of social media on their own lives.”
The report surveyed nearly 10,000 high school students aged 11 to 18 to identify and address the mental health concerns facing teenagers. The report found schoolwork was the number one cause of stress and worry, with causes of stress including feeling anxious about what might happen, self-esteem, friend problems and family
difficulties, in that order. Teens’ biggest worries revolved around their future, the way they look, what people think or say about them and missing out on their goals, with females reporting higher levels of stress than males.
But perhaps most interesting was the link the report uncovered between sleep and mental health.
“It isn’t a surprise that the amount of sleep a teen gets has an impact on their day-to-day resilience, but what might come as a surprise is the difference that just one hour of sleep makes,” says Dan. “Of the students surveyed, 40 percent who go to bed later than 11 pm reported experiencing challenges, compared to 22 percent of people who go to bed at 10 pm or earlier.”
Screen time was found to be the most common activity before bed, with 65 percent of young people interacting with screens – either TV, video games or social media – in the hour before they go to bed.
“Contrary to how adults view the impact of social media, young people believe it to be of benefit to their lives,” says Dan. “Students see social media as a tool for connection and value its role in enhancing their relationships with others. A higher proportion of young people feel that social media has helped improve their self-esteem than damaging it, and the 49 percent of students who are on social media daily will be more likely turn to a friend their age for support, compared to the 34 percent who use it weekly or less.”
One of the most profound findings of the MyStrength report was that while young people are able to recognise the causes of their stress and worries, many don’t seek professional help – or help at all.
“Alarmingly, one in three students do not talk to anyone when they are struggling,” says Dan. “For those teens who do reach out to others about their problems, it’s more likely that they would reach out to a friend than a parent.”
MyStrengths found that only three percent of students seek support from their teachers at school, too. On a more positive note, 62 percent said they feel understood by their parents – but interestingly, roughly percent of those teenagers are more likely to talk to their mum, with only 17 percent of females and 29 percent of males likely to turn to their dads when feeling worried or down.
The report was released ahead of the launch of MyStrengths’ Raising Resilience course, a 10-step program designed to turn the tide on teen mental health. It launched nationwide on October 1 to coincide with the start of Mental Health Month, and includes short engaging videos and daily challenges for parents to watch with their teens.
“So many students have been given negative labels – slow, a nerd, bossy, too loud, too quiet, crazy, or perhaps even weird,” says Dan. “Those labels are like a lens through which they view themselves, and our natural negativity bias tends to make them stick.
“We’ve spent six years working with over 30,000 students in high schools, and it’s become clear to us that most teenagers know their weaknesses, but very few know their strengths. Their identity, self-worth and confidence are being damaged, and we wanted to remove the negative lens and give them a new set of lenses to view themselves and their world.”

Deciding when to sell your house is a big deal, and a decision most people will make only a few times.
So what are the signs that it’s time to sell your property? Here are our top five tips for when to list your property for sale:
1. Your family doesn’t fit in it anymore
If your home no longer accommodates your family, pets or hobbies comfortably, it’s time to move on and upsize to somewhere with more room.
2. Your neighbour sold recently and made a lot of cash
If you’ve had a poke around the real estate sold prices listed for your area and been surprised to see the amounts some of your neighbours are getting for their properties, it may be time to sell.
3. Interest rates are low
When interest rates are low, as they are currently in Australia, the lower mortgage repayments bring more potential buyers into the pool, which is highly beneficial to the vendor.
4. The market is showing signs of slowing down
Another reason to sell is to take advantage of a property boom before it inevitably slows.
5. Your gut is telling you it’s time
Sometimes there’s nothing logical about choosing the right time to sell a property –sometimes you just know. Perhaps you keep drifting to the real estate section of the paper or checking out houses as you drive around your city.
Request a free appraisal from Local Property Team to get a better understanding of where your house stands in the current market today.

On the 4th of November, local author Nerissa Plackowski launched her first book The Rescue of Old Bluey in the Australian based children's adventure series, Aussie Bush Troopers at the Meadowbrook Golf Club surrounded by 100 of their friends, family and supporters.
“This journey began 1998 when I was a full-time mum of two little people” explained Nerissa, “It was during this season of my life when I first penned the story, and 23 years later, I've watched my beloved characters come to life through the talented hand of fellow author and illustrator Jan Morris.”
The Rescue of Old Bluey is a classic Aussie adventure, full of mishaps, surprises, and ingenious ways of navigating tricky situations with entertaining Aussie characters that promise to engage young readers for hours.
As the author, Nerissa discovered during her Storytime visits to schools, child care centres and playgroups. Where along with her furry friends, she had fun sharing her story while teaching them about the Aussie animals featured in the book.
However, this beautifully illustrated children's adventure picture book would not have been published without the help of the local community and their Kickstarter campaign.
“They say it takes a village to raise a child but it takes a community to publish a book,” stated Nerissa, “So, without the community, we would have had the funds to publish. So, thank you so much for the support and thanks to the incredible generosity, we have over 60 books to donate to local schools in the Logan City Council region.”
Nerissa will be working closely together with Cr Miriam Stemp, to distribute the books to local schools within the area.
If you would like more information about Nerissa, the Aussie Bush Troupers, visit their website https://www.nerissaplackowski.com.
Access to nutritious food is a right, not a privilege.
Did you know that there are over 47,000 people in the Logan Region that require daily food assistance?
Food security is a topic that Mini Farm founder and CEO, Nick Steiner is very passionate about; forming the Mini Farm Project Ltd, a not-for-profit Registered Charity whose vision is to reduce food insecurity in Queensland. They do this by creating a series of farms from the New South Wales border to Cairns.
“We are a charity that grows food for those in need by converting under-utilised spaces into urban farms” explained Founder Nick, “The food we grow is freely donated to local charities and food rescue agencies like Meals on Wheels and Oz Harvest and go directly to people in the Logan Region.
The idea originated back in 2010 when Nick came up with the idea to grow food for those in need. Since then, he has worked on the idea until starting his first farm in his backyard in 2014.
“I believe that people in need deserve the same quality of produce that we can purchase from the shops” stated Nick, “That is why we started the farms, it was to reduce food insecurity in Logan by 80%.”
Soon Logan, Beenleigh and the Logan Region will be part of an amazing project to grow food for those in need.
Mini Farm Project has partnered with CityStudio, Griffith University and Loganlea State High School to create Logan’s first site at Loganlea State High School. This will be the first of a number of farms, they have planned for the area to get nutritious food to the tables of many people in Logan.
Produce will be distributed freely to the Local community through OzHarvest.
“We are more than just a charity farm” explained Nick, “We build a community around each of our farms by integrating community programs such as work for the dole, onsite university research, learning programs for Primary and High School students, Volunteer days, NDIS programs to name a few.”
Students from Loganlea and Griffith University will have the opportunity to learn how we create a new farm and learn skills to apply to their studies.
Brenton, the Principle at Loganlea State High School, also shared his excitement for being part of this project.
“The core focus at Loganlea State High School is preparing students for further education and employment, this project will provide real world knowledge that will benefit the students in their education and future”, stated Principle Brenton.
Nick also stated, “Our model works. We have the people, and we have the knowledge. Now we
need help to get our farms started. Individuals and businesses can now sponsor a bed or donate to help us start up our farms. We can only do this with the support of the community. Please spread the word, because everyone deserves access to nutritious food”.

Our local businesses are becoming more and more impersonal as time moves forward. Locally-owned businesses that care about their customers are fast being replaced by large corporations.
The hardware sector has long been dominated by big-named brands like Bunnings. We take a look at the story of Browns Plains Hardware, one locally-owned store in the sea of impersonal superstores.
Browns Plains Hardware has been in the hardware industry for over 35 years. They have staff members with a combined total experience in hardware well over 100 years.
While Browns Plains Hardware is locally owned, it isn't independent. It has always been a part of the Independent Hardware Group, giving them the benefit of buying power - they can get their stock at a reasonable price, and sell it on to their customers at competitive prices.
However, when their larger competitors spend more money on marketing in a month than Browns Plains Hardware makes in a decade, how can they compete?
Paul Charlton, the owner of Browns Plains Hardware, believes the secret to success lies in customer service.
When a customer comes into Browns Plains Hardware, the first goal is to solve their problem, not sell them the most expensive item.
“I recently had a guy come in looking to spend about $100 on some plumbing items,” Paul stated. “I talked with him about what he was trying to achieve and figured that his $100 idea wasn't going to do the job, and actually sent him home with the knowledge to fix his problem for free. He came back later that day with a 6 pack as thanks for solving his problem and saving him money.”
This isn’t your conventional sales tactics - in fact it goes against most sales advice anyone would give. But Paul and his family have been in the business long enough to know that an impeccable reputation and fantastic customer service is the key to success in any business.
