WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER 2023 ISSUE!

We consider ourselves here working at the Guides to be blessed in many ways.

As we work through each month searching for stories to share with you, it gives us opportunities to meet and learn about some amazing people around us. Not to mention the local organisations & businesses that help make these stories real.

Pete Hutton from MultiLink this month shares a story of a quiet achiever, Pushpa, who has been through a journey that is truly remarkable. Her story is so special, I am sure you will find it inspirational!

And as October is the Breast Cancer Awareness month, Kylie Murray, a Loganholme local, shares her heart felt story and how we can all help to find cure to this disease that effects so many of us. None of us can see it coming, yet it could be any one of us!

Vice President of Logan Chamber of Commerce, Arwen, who is also the owner of Logan’s iconic high tea venue, Devon Pixies is also sharing her thoughts on the questions we threw at her to inspire other small business owners.

All in all, it is going to be a fantastic October for us all! Happy Reading.

SOME SNAKE TALES PART 2

Once when our family was sitting around the breakfast table, I noticed a black snake curled up in the corner. I thought it was a plastic snake that one of my boys had brought down from a neighbour’s place - they also had sons of a similar age.

Two of my sons each though the other had put it there as a prank – they thought it was real, but dead. Suddenly, it started moving. My daughters both screamed and jumped onto the table. The boys were shocked and jumped up too. My husband got a big pair of scissors, grabbed it just behind the head and flushed it down the toilet! It transpired that the cat had caught it and brought it inside. He had injured it in some way. The girls wouldn’t use that toilet

for about six months, in case it swam back up the pipe.

Years later, my husband did the same thing. We had celebrated Passover with family and friends, and my son, the last to leave, said to us that it was just as well the Angel of Death had passed over our house that night, as an Eastern brown snake was curled up next to the front door, and everyone had passed it as they left. Once again, he picked it up with scissors behind the head and put it in the toilet. He had to bang its head down with the toilet brush because it reared up when it felt the water.

Our back garden is pretty much au naturel, apart from a huge mango tree, and the front is just garden with no lawn. I have seen and heard brown snakes rustling through the leaves and ground cover plants in the front and seen them in the back. Once my daughter wouldn’t get out of her car because a brown snake was on the driveway. She didn’t move until it slithered away.

PHILIPPINES

Mabuhay! This month we will look at the Philippines. A comfortable trip on a direct flight from Brisbane (approximately 8 hours flight), you can easily discover your own slice of paradise in the Philippines.

Renowned for its over 7000 islands, the Philippines is blessed with stunning beaches, marine life, bustling cities and cultural heritage.

Whether you are after surfing, diving, a food holiday or just want to lay back and enjoy the island life, this archipelago has something unique for every traveller.

Cruise along Palawan’s turquoise waters and cool off in the clear island lagoons, go trekking in Banaue and enjoy rice terraces as far as the eye can see or get stocked catching a wave in Siargao’s Cloud 9.

Explore historical Cebu the second largest urban centre in the Philippines. Cebu City was the original capital dating back to 1521. It was during this time that Ferdinand Magellan’s (famous explorer) world tour that laid the foundations of the city and island that has since become globally renowned.

Have a well-deserved restful holiday in Boracay – home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. Indulge in spa and wellness retreats that will take you away from the everyday and finish your day with stunning sunsets.

No trip to the Philippines is complete without a visit to Bohol – home to the native Tarsier (smallest primate in the world), Chocolate Hills with ever changing colours in the dry season and fantastic diving spots.

Let’s not forget the Ifugao Rice Terraces listed as a World Heritage Site covering 25,000 hectares with various hiking trails.

Vigan one of the oldest towns with Spanish charm and architecture. Cobblestone streets combined with colonial architecture.

Whilst it is moments of wonder with nature that invigorate the spirit of travellers, it is the warm and welcoming nature of the Filipino people that truly make it more fun in the Philippines.

Philippine Airlines can take you there from Brisbane 5 times per week with great domestic connections to the many islands, but you can also transit through to other destinations such as Canada, USA, Japan and Asia.

Until next month, Tina

“WINNING HEARTS & ELEVATING EXPERIENCES"

Creating an exceptional customer journey is not just a strategy; it can be an entire business plan in itself. A customer journey encompasses the stages of building relationships, touchpoints, channels, metrics, responses, operational processes, and the critical consideration of customers' pain points, emotions, expectations, FAQs, and necessary improvements. Customer journeys are dynamic processes, getting your customers to map their experiences may differ from what you initially planned too.

Finding Your Tribe: Successful customer journeys begin with finding your tribe or should I say your tribe finding you. — the group of individuals who resonate with your brand and values.

Building relationships with them is a journey in itself. Understand their motivations, challenges, and aspirations. At each stage, their emotions can change. Cultivate a sense of community and belonging. Encourage interaction through forums, social media, and events. When customers feel a connection, they become loyal advocates.

Touchpoints, Channels, and Metrics: Every interaction between your business and customers is a touchpoint. They are “moments of truth” for you to check your journey and their map and improve. Whether it's a website visit, a phone call, or a social media message, each touchpoint should be seamless and aligned with your brand's messaging.

Key performance indicators Use metrics to monitor the effectiveness of these touchpoints. (KPIs) help you gauge the success of your customer journey strategy. Analyse data to refine your approach continually.

Workflows-Operational Processes: Behind the scenes, operational processes are vital to delivering consistent customer experiences. Document workflows, marketing material and forms and procedures to ensure that every team member understands their role in the customer journey.

Prioritise customer-centricity in these processes, making it easier for employees to meet customer needs promptly and effectively.

Planning customer journeys that win hearts and elevate experiences endeavour. It requires a look at all facets of your business from both the inside and out. That means sometimes you need that external point of view to see what is really happening rather than what you mean to happen.

Need a hand then don’t forget to give Helen a ring.

QUIET ACHIEVER

ne of the great elements of living in Logan is our high cultural diversity with over 230 different cultures in the region and almost a third of our residents born overseas. Along with this diversity comes an almost hidden or unspoken aspect of a person’s story. Caught-up in our day-to-day lives, we often don’t stop to think about the person who just served us in the shop, or cooked our meal, that they may actually have an amazing backstory prior to their life in Brisbane. Thankfully at MultiLink Community Service in Logan Central, we do get to hear some of these stories and this is just one of many we would like to share.

Imagine for a moment, being on a boat in the middle of the ocean with no land anywhere in sight. Now imagine that this boat is old and rickety and keeps

ACHIEVER

breaking down every day or two. You are looking at the deep blue sea surrounding the boat and you know you can’t swim. Now imagine there are 50 other people with you on the boat and this is the eighth day you have been without food or water….

This may sound like a bleak movie, but for Pushpa Sureshkumar, it was all very real and part of her journey to where she is today. Pushpa recently completed a 20week Certificate I Hospitality Traineeship with MultiLink and Axiom College as part of a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project funded by the Queensland Government. This Traineeship has been an excellent program for MultiLink for several years helping many Trainees learn new skills and gain employment

in the Hospitality industry. Pushpa is one such participant who was such a delight to have in the program and so humble of her amazing natural culinary skills. She is an absolute ‘wizard’ in the kitchen.

MultiLink’s Hospitality Facilitator Katrina Lazari, described Pushpa as a “natural born leader”. “Initially she was quite shy at the start, but overtime her confidence grew and she came out of her shell. Pushpa was using her initiative and is really creative in the kitchen. She was the hardest worker and someone I could always rely on. It is so good to see where she is now.”

She is an absolute ‘wizard’ in the kitchen

Like many of our culturally diverse residents, life wasn’t always so straight forward for Pushpa. Born in Sri Lanka and growing up in the NorthEastern port city of Trincomalee, Pushpa and her younger sister were raised by their mother after her Tamil father was kidnapped and never seen again when she was 5 years young. Sadly this beautiful little country had fallen into Civil War in 1983 and even when it finally came to an end in 2009, it was still not a safe place for the all-female household as even Pushpa’s Grandmother had been killed during the civil conflict.

These days Trincomalee is a picturesque beach city rated as “one of the best places to visit” in Sri Lanka for it’s snorkelling, whale watching, deer spotting and temples, but in 2013 Pushpa’s mother had decided they

needed to get out of the country for their own safety. Pushpa’s mother managed to secure a plane flight for herself and her 2 daughters and they flew into India where they spent a month as unbeknown to Pushpa, her mother was arranging passage on a boat to Australia.

After some anxious waiting and hoping they had not been tricked by a scam, the three of them boarded a boat with around 50 others and set-off into the unknown. The journey soon descended into chaos. “Every second day the boat broke-down. We were scared, in the middle of the ocean and I cannot swim.” After the fifth day, the boat ran out of food and water and descended into further gloom. Each day bringing the hope of a rescue, only to end in darkness and another long night of scattered sleep.

Finally after 13 days an Indonesian fishing vessel came across them and helped with some food and water before an Australian Patrol Boat arrived the following day. Everyone

on the boat was taken to Christmas Island and this was the first Pushpa learnt of their intended Australian destination. Although now safe and with food in their bellies, Pushpa said, “We felt relief, but still scared. There were many refugee boats and the authorities were very serious. Not friendly. We didn’t know what was going to happen.”

From here they were taken to a medical camp and then another camp where they spent the following seven months before being relocated to Brisbane. A house in Darra then became their new home, so Pushpa and her sister took themselves to do further schooling at a ‘flexible’ school in Milton and study more in Maths and English while gaining some cleaning work.

Pushpa then met her husband, married in 2017 and moved to Logan where she became a stay-at-home mum raising her two young children. One day at a local Primary School a staff member mentioned MultiLink’s Hospitality Traineeship as something to consider. Pushpa decided to give us a call and after being interviewed she joined the program. “I really enjoyed it. It was the first time in a commercial kitchen for me and I loved learning new things and meeting the elderly clients and making new friends.”

At the end of the Traineeship, Pushpa applied for a job with Kickin’ Inn (a cajun seafood restaurant) in Spring Hill and was interviewed

and selected on-the-spot. Pushpa’s bosses were surprised how quickly she learnt her required tasks and their cooking methods. This resulted in Pushpa being transferred closer to home to help establish and run the new Kickin’ Inn restaurant in Logan Central (near Coles) which opened a month ago.

“Everyone at work is so nice and friendly. I’ve been made a Kitchen Hand and doing a lot of work preparing the food and I take on a Leader role when our Kitchen Leader is not in. Life is good now. A few months ago I became a permanent resident and I can stay in Australia. I’m so happy.”

Our Employment team at MultiLink Community Service is so happy for Pushpa too. As mentioned earlier, she is one of MANY amazing stories of our clients who have escaped hardship, war zones, experienced tragedies and overcome barriers on the road to making a new life for themselves in our community. They are people that want the same things we all want, a steady job and security for themselves and their families.

Thanks to continued support from the Queensland Government, MultiLink will continue to run the ‘Logan Diverse Workforce Hub’ (helping migrants, refugees and international students in employment), along with training programs in such areas as Automotive, Cleaning, Individual Support, Hospitality, Warehousing and Early Childcare.

If your business can help offer employment to more beautiful people like Pushpa, or want to find out how to receive free training and then gain a job, make contact with MultiLink today. E: employment@multilink. org.au or Ph: 0413 153 898.

HACHIKO: THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD’S MOST LOYAL DOG

Man and his dog–it’s a friendship as old as time. Nothing quite matches the infinite loyalty and unbreakable bond between a dog and his owner.

The emotional story of Hachiko the dog clearly reveals the love a dog has for his master. Here is the Hachiko story.

The Hachiko real story begins with the lasting bond between Hachiko and his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno. Even though Hachiko lived back in the 20th century, his story has continued to inspire people around the world up to this day. The tale of the Hachiko story has resulted in several Hachiko memorials and even a Hachiko movie that

documents the story of the incredible bond that formed between Hachiko and Ueno.

Hachiko was an Akita Inu dog born on a farm in 1923 and later adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor of agriculture at the University of Tokyo. The two fell into a daily routine: Ueno and Hachiko would walk together to the Shibuya train station, where Ueno would pet Hachiko goodbye before getting on the train to work. Hachiko, who also became known as Hachi, would then spend the day waiting for Ueno to come back. In the meantime, local shopkeepers and station workers would keep an eye on him and often give him treats while he held his vigil for Ueno.

This routine continued for several years until one day, tragedy ensued. Ueno never came home from work, as he suffered a brain hemorrhage and died. Of course, Hachi

had no idea about this, so the loyal dog continued to wait for his owner’s return. Every day like clockwork, when the train would appear, so would Hachi, searching for Ueno. Hachi’s fidelity earned him the nickname “the faithful dog.”

Hachi never gave up hope and continued to wait for more than nine years for his owner to return. Finally, one morning, on March 8, 1935, Hachiko was found dead. It is believed that he died due to natural causes. His body was taken to the train station’s baggage room, a place that had been one of his favorite hangouts. He was then photographed, surrounded by Ueno’s wife, Yaeko, as well as staff members at the station. Yoshizo Osawa, one of the staff members, gifted the photo to one of his daughters, who recalled that her dad loved dogs and would often tell her about how Hachi would come daily to the station, where staff would happily share their lunches with him.

Although Hachiko’s life ended decades ago, his story continues to live on. A bronze statue of Hachiko was erected outside the Shibuya Station in Japan as a tribute to the dog. The station entrance closest to the statue was renamed “Hachikō-guchi,” or “The Hachikō Entrance/Exit” in Japanese. Furthermore, one of the train lines was also called the Hachiko Line.

Tourism as a local industry has been important to me since I started managing in a Scenic Rim winery, 20 years ago! I got involved as a representative for the local wineries while the Scenic Rim destination

management plan was workshopped and discussed. I then decided to complete my masters in tourism leadership, majoring in Visitor Management to further my knowledge and understanding of the industry. Since owning and operating Devon Pixies, I have seen the potential and the gaps in Logans' tourism industry but I have seen the industry make some great leaps forward, particularly with the Logan City Council now championing the tourism industry and its development.

Tourism is not only important to me and my business, but it is important to all businesses. Tourism brings people to an area, people who need somewhere to stay, somewhere to eat, places to go, transport, fuel, good roads, signage, shopping, the list goes on!

What does your day look like? How do you find time to: operating your own business, Chamber of Commerce commitments and family?

My day. Three mornings a week, I start with a 6am bootcamp at Woodlands, then I pick up any last minute shopping or items I might need for Devon Pixies, head home, get ready and out the door with my husband and daughter. Our daughter gets dropped off at school and we are off to work. Usually starting around 8am, the first thing I do is get the scones into the oven. After that, I check the bookings for the day, make sure we have all the items ready for the high tea bookings, bake more cakes and slices for the cake cabinet and serve our guests. I have school trainees most week days, so we run through their tasks and work on a particular aspect for their training.

If it gets quiet enough, I duck into my office to get emails answered, check messages, send invoices, pay bills, wages etc etc. We finish around 4pm and three afternoons a week, our daughter has after school activities, so I take her to them.

I fit Chamber commitments around work, so some days I might get an hour of work done in the afternoon, or I could be working on chamber items in the evening after dinner. The biggest commitment this year was the business awards, and there were some late nights there. I currently coordinate the markets with an assistant, so there are some busier weeks when it's market weekend.

We have a small family and our daughter is in high school with her own commitments and homework. She has also just started working for us on a Saturday. Devon Pixies hours generally suit family life quite well, and any extra commitments are managed with good family communication.

How is Devon Pixies going? What is the most satisfying aspect of running Devon Pixies?

After moving from Logan Village to the Kingston Butter Factory precinct, business has grown from being a one woman, a school trainee, and a weekend casual operation, to be an operation that supports myself, a full timer, a part timer, and three school trainees, and a couple of weekend casuals. My business has changed from being high tea only to adding a casual cafe dining / takeaway service. This was a bit bumpy for us in our first year (2022) while we got our systems and processes organised, but I think we have our groove now. Kingston is a great central location, I would love more people to find us! The most satisfying aspect of running Devon Pixies? It is unique in Logan, I love surprising people with our high tea experience. I love hearing people tell me their stories of early days in Logan, or their memories that have been brought back through their enjoyment of the high tea. It's the people that make Devon Pixies a great place to be.

Where is your favourite (one of…) dining venue in Logan City?

There are so many places!!! For a casual drop in at the hyperdome, we go to Spoons Deli. Our local pub is the Club Hotel, and we enjoy China King, Ya Hoo, Shams Kebabs (Meadowbrook) for takeaway or head to Super Pizza in Beenleigh. There are so many great places to choose from in Logan but we don't go out for meals often to do them justice. That is the flip side of hospitality, once we are done for the day, we just want to relax at home.

TANAH MERAH

Exploring the Rich Heritage and Community Spirit of Waterford

George Palk, the earliest settler of what is now Tanah Merah (formerly Slacks Creek), arrived in 1862 to work for the Queensland Co-operative Cotton Company. He later served as the chairman of the Tingalpa Divisional Board in 1880, 1882, 1883, and 1884.

The name Tanah Merah, meaning 'red earth' in Bahasa, was given to the area by Jim and Mave McBride, who came from Malaya in 1952. They were inspired by their property in Malaya and named the area accordingly. The name was first used locally in December 1952 when the McBrides sent calves to market. They sold their 176-acre property at auction in April 1955.

Alan Coles Real Estate purchased and developed the property, introducing Bahasa-inspired street names like Tingi Avenue (meaning 'high'), Goenoeng Drive (meaning 'mountain'), Pintu Drive (meaning 'door'), and Abang Avenue (meaning 'brother') with slight spelling modifications.

The population of Tanah Merah surged from 879 in 2001 to 4,559 in 2006, mainly due to estate development west of Drews Road, and has remained relatively stable since. As of the 2021 Census, the population of Tanah Merah stands at 4,754 people living in 1,810 private dwellings.

Murray’s Road

Murrays Road is heritage road located in the suburb. Named after the Murray family who first settled in the area in the 1870s, the road (in part) is bordered by Slacks Creek and natural reserve. The original Murray farm, which served as a dairy for four generations, including supplying the Kingston Butter Factory, is still found at the road’s end, though the dairy is no longer operational.

This road also played a crucial role in timber transportation, where logs were hauled by bullock cart from the surrounding area to sawmills along the Logan River. A rafting system, employing steamers, facilitated this process, traveling up Slacks Creek. Earth cuttings can still be seen in the hill to the side of the road where logs were rolled down for removal. Rafting Court is a small a street off Murray’s Road which is named to remember the important role the timber distribution point had in supplying timber to the developing area.

SUBMISSION PLANNED FOR GROWTH STRATEGY

Council responds to draft SEQ Regional Plan

Ambitious growth targets set by the Queensland Government in the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan 2023 (ShapingSEQ) need to be supported by critical infrastructure to maintain the region’s liveability.

That’s the view of Logan City Council as it prepares a submission to the draft document in the coming weeks following endorsement at today’s Ordinary Meeting.

Council will also request access to the government’s modelling to validate population targets, which include a forecast additional 311,300 residents in the City of Logan by 2046 – a significant jump from the current population of 350,740.

The Regional Plan anticipates almost six million people will live in South East Queensland by

2046 and sets a framework for land supply, housing choices, employment opportunities, environmental and amenity factors and lifestyle choices.

Mayor Darren Power said Council had consistently met all housing targets set by the Queensland Government.

“We welcome growth in the city, as long as essential infrastructure is delivered in tandem,” Councillor Power said.

“Emerging neighbourhoods need not only roads, water and sewerage but also social infrastructure such as community centres, libraries and sports fields.

“Unfortunately, infrastructure charges levied to developers are capped by the Queensland Government and do not cover the ever-increasing costs for Council of delivering the essentials.

“As elected members, we often have to find the balance between overcommitting our limited financial resources and making sure our suburbs have what they need at the right time.

“Equally, the Queensland Government needs to continue delivering infrastructure to support transport and jobs.”

Council’s submission will also cover:

• Population projections and affordable housing targets

• Increased employment opportunities required in Logan

• Infrastructure including major road upgrades and public transport

• Proposed planning regulation amendments that could have negative impacts in industrial developments

Cr Power said local government was only one part of the growth and development chain, with economic factors also contributing to population targets.

“We know the development industry is struggling across the region at the moment, so Council is very interested to see how the government believes we can meet the projections over the next 23 years,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to read the Queensland Government’s latest updates and provide input before September 20 because it’s important that all of our community’s voices are heard.

“I also call on our local State MPs to ensure the government considers all submissions. This is far too important to get wrong.”

Council will also need to align its new draft planning scheme – Logan Plan 2025 –with ShapingSEQ.

The new planning scheme, endorsed by Council in August, will be lodged for a mandatory state interest review later this month.

For more information about the SEQ Regional Plan, go to shapingseq.statedevelopment.qld.gov.au

Loving care is prescribed for someone in your family, Aquarius. Offer a bowl of soup and some tea, but beyond that try and stay out of the way. Sometimes uninterrupted quiet is the best cure of all. You could use a bit of this yourself. Why not curl up with a good book? Even if it's the middle of the day, draw the shades and pretend it's night.

You'll be happiest away from prying eyes today, Pisces. You're not in the mood to be friendly or participate in idle gossip. It seems you've been having the same conversations with the same people for some time now. You're feeling so bored you could scream. To avoid doing just that, spend quiet time alone today if you can.

When was the last time you entertained at home? Your inner host wants to come out to play for a while, so let it! Now is a great time for gatherings, especially ones that include members of your family. The easygoing, pressure-free nature of a family get-together will help you truly relax and reconnect with what's important.

One of your friends or family members has been acting out of character lately. Start a conversation, and be careful not to get to your point too quickly. If you ask them to give you their latest life update, the key information will be divulged soon enough. Chances are they're in a situation that you can help them with.

You can expect some big changes, Gemini. All the hard work you've been doing to develop your confidence is showing, and this is attracting opportunities like bees to honey. On top of this, your passion is high right now, so set aside private time with your mate. Plan a romantic evening, open a bottle of wine, and celebrate!

You're energetic and enthusiastic today, Cancer, and those around you respond favourably. It seems everyone wants to be in your orbit. Work at home and the office goes quickly and smoothly. Because you have so much energy, why not take on a new project? Normally this would send you over the edge, but today you feel you could take on.

There's tension all around you, so you'll be happiest spending as much time by yourself, Leo. If you must interact with people, keep your communication clear and concise. There's room for misunderstanding, which could result in a major blowup over a minor event. It simply isn't worth the trouble.

Change is good, but it can be scary when it comes suddenly. That's what you feel today when someone announces a major change without warning. You're not sure how to react to the news and haven't a clue how it affects you. All you can do now is wait. Try not to panic. In the end, you'll see that these changes will benefit everyone, including you!

You've never looked better, Libra. Your partner notices, too, and showers you with extra affection and perhaps even an unexpected gift. This should put a smile on your face! At work, you may be given responsibilities beyond your usual job. Take care to do this special assignment well and other advancements are likely to follow.

Sometimes a little indulgence has value far beyond its price, Scorpio. A bubble bath in the middle of the day, a luxurious hour spent browsing in a bookstore, a special outfit you've wanted for a long time - these are a few of the ways you could perk up your spirits. Why not? You could use a boost.

You feel as though you've turned a financial and professional corner, Sagittarius. Recent accomplishments have you feeling energised and on top of the world! You exude confidence. It's a good feeling, isn't it? Members of the opposite sex are especially attracted to you right now. And who could blame them? You're looking great!

Who knew you were so talented, Capricorn? A creation done long ago suddenly takes on a life of its own. A short story written and submitted long ago is pulled from the bottom of the slush pile. Or a portrait you painted gets a second admiring look. Whatever the circumstances, you enjoy the recognition.

THE UPSIDES OF DOWNSIZING YOUR HOME

In recent years, the concept of downsizing one's living space has gained significant popularity among homeowners in Australia. This growing trend is driven by a desire to simplify lifestyles, reduce expenses, and adapt to changing circumstances. Whether you're an empty nester or part of a bustling family household, there's a good chance you have unused space that can be relinquished without sacrificing your comfort. Downsizing not only helps save money through smaller mortgage payments but also leads to less time spent cleaning and a clutter-free living environment.

We had the opportunity to speak with Michael Wardlaw, a seasoned real estate agent at House Property Agents in Springwood on this topic. Michael has witnessed a noticeable uptick in interest surrounding downsizing over the past five years. According to him, "In the last half-decade, downsizing, especially among our baby boomer demographic, has become

an enticing prospect. Many are looking to capitalise on the residential market's growth and transition to a village lifestyle."

In the last half-decade, downsizing, especially among our baby boomer demographic, has become an enticing prospect.

He continues, "In some instances, homeowners are pocketing substantial sums, ranging from $300,000 to $400,000 or more, all tax-free, while securing a modern villa within an over-50s village." However, downsizing is not just about changing your living arrangements; it signifies a significant lifestyle shift. Michael advises, "Baby boomers should prepare for this transition, as it may well be one of their last major moves." This is where Michael's expertise comes into

play. He offers complimentary consultations to discuss various downsizing options, village lifestyles, or finding smaller homes. Additionally, he provides guidance on preparing a home for sale to avoid unnecessary expenses and gaining a clear understanding of both moving in and out costs.

In light of the changing housing landscape, he observes, "Retirement villages have been steadily emerging throughout our town, and this trend is poised to continue as the demand and appetite for affordable living options grow." He adds, "Given the soaring costs of raw land, we anticipate not only a continued increase in our retiring population choosing smaller homes but also a growing trend among our younger households."

Homeowners are pocketing substantial sums, ranging from $300,000 to $400,000 or more, all tax-free...

For independent advice, consider reaching out to Michael. He can provide valuable insights on what to prioritise when preparing your home for sale to avoid unnecessary expenses and help you understand the costs associated with moving in and out. Michael is here to help you in making informed decisions about your housing needs.

Finn VS Coral Bleaching

In the crystal-clear waters of the vibrant Great Barrier Reef, a small, courageous fish named Finn, swam gracefully among the coral formations. Finn’s scales shimmered with an iridescent blue, blending perfectly with the surrounding coral. He was a curious and adventurous fish, always exploring new corners of the reef, eager to uncover hidden treasures.

One sunny day, Finn noticed a subtle change in his surroundings – some of the coral that had once thrived with vivid colours had turned a ghostly white. Panic gripped his heart as he realized that his beloved home was suffering from coral bleaching. The once-teeming coral reef, which had provided shelter and food for countless marine creatures, was now losing its vitality. Death was coming!

Frantically, Finn swam amongst the many sea creatures, searching for answers. He

encountered an old, wise sea turtle named Tilda who had seen many years of change in her migration through the oceans of the world. With concern in his eyes, Finn described the plight of the reef and pleaded for guidance.

Tilda explained that coral bleaching occurs when the ocean becomes too warm due to climate change and pollution, causing the coral to expel the colourful algae, Zooxanthellae, that live within them. Without this algae, the coral loses its vibrant colours and becomes weak, and susceptible to disease and death.

Determined to help his friends and the reef, Finn decided to embark on a mission. He recruited a diverse group of marine creatures, including a diligent shrimp, a resourceful octopus, and a helpful starfish. Together, they formed an alliance committed to saving the reef.

Tirelessly, Finn’s team worked, spreading awareness among their fellow sea dwellers about the importance of collecting rubbish to protect the ocean life. They organized clean-up efforts to remove debris such as plastics, straws, and metal pieces that could further harm the fragile coral. Soon, piles of the poisonous items could be seen stacked on the sandy areas away from the coral. Finn’s vibrant blue scales became a symbol of hope as he inspired other fish to join their cause.

The

Their efforts did not go unnoticed. Human divers, impressed by the determination of the underwater community, collaborated with marine biologists to establish protected areas, and enforce regulations to prevent further damage to the reef by reducing carbon emissions, rubbish, and chemical pollution.

Months passed, and Finn’s relentless dedication bore fruit. The coral began to show signs of recovery. Splashes of colour gradually

The Famous Flight

One summer’s day, on a farm, a mother duck sat ready to lay her eggs in a nest that she had found. The nest already had a hard, grey egg in it but she didn’t mind. About one month later the eggs hatched. The duckling that came from the hard, grey egg looked funny and different from the other ducklings. It had a black beak and grey feathers. The other ducklings had yellow feathers. The yellow ducklings teased the odd-looking duckling for its appearance. Because of this backbiting and nastiness, the grey duckling waddled

returned, and life within the reef teemed once again. Finn’s heart swelled with pride as he witnessed the revival of his home.

The story of Finn and his companions spread throughout the ocean, inspiring other communities to act. Together with the humans, they formed a global network of marine conservationists, determined to protect the world’s coral reefs from the devastating effects of climate change and pollution.

to the next area where there were pigs. They snorted, “Oh, no! Look at her, she looks ridiculous! Ha ha ha!”

The grey duckling hid in the bushes for a while and then waddled quickly and sadly to the next pen full of cows.

They also answered back, “You are the most ridiculous looking duckling we’ve ever seen!”

During other times, all the other animals also made fun of her until she was so tired, she decided to hide in some reeds in a lake next to the farm. Day after day, she hid in them. She survived because there were lots of insects to catch.

After winter had passed, she swam out of the reeds and across the lake where all the farm animals saw her but none of them recognized her.

The once grey duckling, looked at her reflection in the water. She was no longer ugly, but a beautiful swan! So, with great joy, she joined a squad of swans flying over her head.

Now, every single farm animal, even the mother ducks, exclaimed, “That beautiful swan looks amazing! Could that be the ugly grey duckling who lived in the reeds?”

From that day on, the grey duckling, now a beautiful swan, was the most famous bird in the whole countryside!

SAFE RETURN TO EXERCISE AFTER PREGNANCY

Welcoming a new baby is a joyous occasion, but it brings significant changes to a mother's body. As you navigate the postpartum period, it's important to consider exercise as part of your recovery and overall well-being. Here's a guide to help you safely and effectively incorporate exercise into your life after pregnancy.

Postpartum Recovery Period

Before diving into a fitness routine, understand that your body needs time to recover. Typically, it's recommended to wait six weeks to eight weeks before starting any rigorous exercise. Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any postpartum exercise programme to ensure you're cleared for physical activity.

Start Slowly with Gentle Movements

During the initial postpartum weeks, focus on gentle movements and low-impact exercises. These help improve circulation, prevent blood clots, and support your body's healing process. Suitable options include:

Walking: Begin with short walks and gradually increase duration. Walking is a low-impact way to get moving and may be done with your baby in a pram.

Pelvic Floor Exercises: Pelvic floor muscles weaken during pregnancy and childbirth. Kegel exercises help strengthen them and prevent issues like urinary incontinence.

Core Strengthening

Rebuilding your core strength is essential after pregnancy. However, avoid traditional abdominal exercises initially, as they can strain your abdominal muscles. Instead, opt for postpartum-friendly core exercises like:

Pelvic Tilts: Lie on your back with knees bent. Tighten your abdominal muscles and gently tilt your pelvis upward, then release. This exercise helps reactivate your core muscles.

Bridge Exercises: Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips off the ground, engaging your glutes and core.

Gradual Progression

As you feel stronger and your healthcare provider gives the green light, gradually introduce more challenging exercises. Incorporate strength training with light weights or resistance bands, and consider cardio workouts such as swimming or low-impact aerobics.

CITY'S ROADS GET MAJOR UPGRADES

Record spend to make city's roads safer

The prognosis is good as an arterial route which services Logan Hospital and the Meadowbrook health precinct undergoes major surgery.

The $77.7 million widening of Loganlea Rd is among a number of projects within a record $140 million roads and drainage spend by Logan City Council in the 2022/23 financial year.

Works across the city will prepare the network for serious growth, with the population set to almost double by 2041.

Many projects are ahead of schedule thanks to recent fine weather. With a relatively dry spring and summer forecast, that good headway should continue.

Loganlea Rd is being widened to six lanes from University Dr at Meadowbrook to the M1 at Slacks Creek.

Below the surface, extensive new drainage and almost 2km of electricity lines have been installed to improve safety, flood resilience and visual appeal.

Work will soon begin on widening the Ray Hodgson Bridge which spans Slacks Creek.

Council is spending $55.2 million on the Loganlea Rd upgrade. The project is receiving $22.5 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Infrastructure Investment Program.

Council’s 2022/23 roads delivery included:

• $58.3 million to resurface more than 290 streets

• $49.3 million on road upgrades to improve the network

• $5.6 million on the upgrade and enhancement of shared pedestrian paths and cycleways

• $4.3 million to upgrade bridges and stormwater drainage

The innovative resurfacing methods Council is employing at Mundoolun Rd, Jimboomba, will pay dividends.

‘Foamed bitumen’ – made by injecting water into hot bitumen so it vaporises and expands the mixture by up to 15 times its original volume – was used to ensure a harder, more durable pavement which is more resilient to heavy rain.

This method allows vehicles to travel on the road sooner, with shorter road closures from flooding and less disruption for motorists.

The road will have wider lanes and shoulders, and improved intersections for drivers entering from side streets.

Additional street lighting and line marking are still to come.

Mayor Darren Power thanked motorists for their patience while essential upgrades were being undertaken.

“This is important work to prepare our roads network. It will cut travel times and congestion and allow drivers to get home safely, Cr Power said.

“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for its contribution to Loganlea Road and Mundoolun Rd upgrades.”

Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan welcomed the work at Mundoolun Rd.

“Council has done some cool work on this stretch of road to make it wider and safer,” Cr Bannan said.

“It’s one of my region’s busiest roads – 40,000 use it every week – so this is a terrific investment for our community.”

The Mundoolun Rd project is jointly funded by Council and the Australian Government’s 2022/23 Roads to Recovery Program.
