Ihave lived in Logan for about 45 years, and all my children and nearly all my grandchildren went to Rochedale State School. During that time, four of the grandchildren became school leaders, and a fifth one was just pipped at the post.
Miriam Garcia was the first, being part of the family where the children went to Chatswood Hills State School for part of the time, before a house move meant they finished their schooling at Rochedale. She was the girls’ Vice-Captain there.
in his footsteps and was named boys’ ViceSchool Captain there.
Their first cousin, Isaac Rolls, was named the Year Six boys’ School Captain at Rochedale State School.
Hugo Hillier, another cousin, tried out for the boys’ Sports Captain there, but missed out.
Apart from Hugo, who is still at school, the others have all gone on to get university degrees or trade apprenticeships, and continue to do well in their chosen fields.
Family members Miriam Garcia, Isaac Rolls and Andre Hillier have all been school captains.
Japan is open and it seems Aussie travellers are really excited by that! Japan is absolutely booming at the moment and what better way to celebrate than to share what the destination has to offer.
Japan is often thought of as being ‘too hard’ by many Aussie’s and that really shouldn’t be the case as it’s a country which can cater to any, and all, travellers with what it has to offer.
Immense natural beauty, a long and fascinating history with ingrained traditions, cutting edge technology, a huge pop culture following and lastly (this IS me writing this) – incredible food!
If you are yet to visit Japan and you’re not sure what / where to visit, it’s always best to follow the ‘Golden Route’ as a recommended start. What's the Golden Route I hear you ask? It’s essentially the most common itinerary for visitors to Japan who have limited time and just want to see the highlights. The itinerary includes Tokyo, Hakone (for some Mt Fuji spotting), ancient Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. If you have some extra time the cities of Yokohama and Nagoya are worth considering.
The Shinkansen (bullet train) train network is a very popular and easy way to travel around
Japan and if doing this, a JR Pass can often be great value.
If you still feel that exploring Japan is still a little overwhelming, choosing a fully escorted tour might be the better option for you.
Our partners at Collette tours have the Cultural Treasures of Japan (scan QR code below). A 12-day itinerary, this tour will include excellent accommodation, not to be missed sightseeing, unique experiences, some meals and a mix of travel styles all the while being fully escorted.
When is the best time to travel to Japan? That’s quite a broad question and it really depends on what you wish to see and experience.
• January is a great time to visit for the winter sports and resorts. Experience skiing, onsen pools and the cutest of all - snow monkeys!
• If you wish to see the Cherry Blossoms late March through to May is a great time to visit.
• Travellers will still be required to present a vaccine certificate showing that they are triple vaccinated.
• Pax who are not triple vaccinated will be required to do a pre-departure PCR test within 72 hours of departure and obtain a negative result. This test result must be on a prescribed format.
•If non-triple vaccinated minors (children under the age of 18) are travelling with parents/ guardians who are triple vaccinated, they will not be required to do the pre-departure PCR test.
For more information on the Cultural Treasures of Japan - 12 day itinerary, scan QR code.
• July sees the end of the rainy season and many local festivals and fireworks are held. Those wishing to get up close and personal to Mt Fuji tend to visit now.
• The typhoon season reaches its peak in August and September.
• October is one of the most pleasant months for traveling in Japan as the weather remains warm, but is no longer hot and humid. As you’ve entered the Autumn months the trees begin changing colours.
If Japan is on your radar my recommendation is to get in early for the best prices and take the time to sit down with your Travel Professional to determine what touring style is best for you.

Located in the Logan part of the ‘Koala Coast’, Cornubia is a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Thanks to its quiet, leafy streets and large blocks, it is home to young families and professionals travelling to and from the CBD.
Much of the land was originally owned by the Wagner family through to the 1890s. William Tabb bought the land in about 1894, and continued to run it as a dairy farm for about 10 years. The homestead was built around 1905.
During the 1920s under the ownership of the Taylor family, the property was named Cornubia Park. It totalled 16,000 acres, located in the area between the current western boundary
of the suburb and California Creek Road and West Mount Cotton Road. Timber getting, dairying, and crops of corn, oats and barley were the main activities carried out here.
In September 1934, the land was purchased by the Jessens. They changed the name of the property to Cornubia because people often arrived for picnics believing that Cornubia Park was for public use. The Jessens continued timber getting and the logs were used for house stumps, power and telephone poles, mine props, railway sleepers and fencing.
Dairying was an important industry on the land. The Jessens grew fodder crops for their cows and sent cream to the Kingston Butter Factory.
In 1956, the land was sold to Alfred Grant and subdivided into smaller lots.
Part of the old property was jointly purchased by Logan City Council and the Queensland Government because of its environmental significance. A nature reserve has been designated in California Creek Road along the creek.
In 1984, St Matthew's Catholic Primary School opened and Chisholm Catholic College opened in 1992.
The first Lutheran Church of the area was located next to the cemetery on the corner of Wuduru and Mount Cotton Roads. It was built in 1876.
As of 2001, the population of Cornubia was around 3,300. 10 years prior there were only 2,000 people in the area. Now, according to the 2016 census population, Cornubia is home to 7, 317 people.
Today, Conubia is a tight-knit, active community with a broad range of goods, services and local businesses. Here is a selection of iconic local businesses that make up the Cornubia community.
Infinite Care Cornubia is home to more than 100 residents and we ensure it feels that way to all who visit and reside here.
We offer a homely environment with designer inspired ensuite bedrooms awaiting a personal touch. Great care has been taken to ensure that every space within the home feels warm and comfortable and delivers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Located close to local amenities this home includes hair & beauty salon, cinema and BBQ facilities. Our barista café overlooks beautifully lush gardens and everyone is welcomed and encouraged to pop in and enjoy this community space together.

You can’t manage what you don’t measure.
I often hear – we have a template. We can do that ourselves. Outside consultants, mentors, and coaches are often seen as an added expense you don’t need. However, they see what you don’t. They not only provide a fresh perspective, expertise you don’t have, relationships and connections you might not know, and an understanding and availability to resources you don’t have. pringwood’s best-kept secret, Hop Space is beating to the rhythm of a different drum thanks to new owner, Jay
When Hop Space first opened its doors, it embodied the essence of the Mediterranean; from the delicious tapas, it served daily right down to its interior – with its rustic décor, the striking stencilled floor, plenty of timber, pops of greenery, a hand-painted hops mural.
However, that era of #Hop Space ended in December 2021, when the restaurant closed its doors, never to be re-opened again after the previous owner, Nicole, wanted to focus on her catering business, Char Baby and spend more
It was by chance that local Jay Spyve stumbled across this opportunity around January 2022. No stranger to the hospitality industry, Jay has years of experience managing and operating restaurants back of house.
Wanting a change of pace, Jay transitioned into sales, motorcycle sales to be exact, then into financing them and then lastly into mortgage broking for a boutique firm in the city.
“I came across Hop Space sort of by accident around January 2022, after talking to Nicole she mentioned she was willing to sell the business, name and everything with it. I also at the time have had enough with my previous work” explained Jay, “I was sick of sitting at a desk, sick of the attitude and overall company I was working for and took the opportunity to dig up my hospitality hat and open up my own place.”
“As a local, I’ve known this area forever and have to admit there is nothing like this place around here. We are in a league of our own. As mentioned before, Hop Space was not to be reopened again, I just had to step in and save it. The ONLY downside is where we are located, it’s not an ideal place for a restaurant we have come to figure out” stated Jay.
As a local, I’ve known this forever and have to admit there is nothing like this place around here.
Since taking over early last year, Jay has given Hop Space a makeover – updating and renovating the restaurant interior and completely revamping the menu.
Now, Jay and his team including Head Chef, Nikko are serving up quality, mouth-watering, delicious, Asian-inspired food, excellent coffee and hand-crafted cocktails for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week at this hidden gem tucked away in Springwood’s Pacific Chambers (just off a service road).
“The best way I would describe our food would be Asian fusion. We wanted to introduce people to Asian food and flavours while incorporating them with foods and dishes that were familiar to people.
We also wanted to distance ourselves from the Spanish style of food and tapas; I mean look at me, do I look Spanish? We wanted to share the food we love with the wider community and give them an introduction to Asian cuisine.”
“The best part of my job is to be able to come to work and create whatever we want. I love coming up with new ideas and getting to create some great dishes and drinks. It’s about creating a welcoming atmosphere, a space where people can come together, relax, have a drink and enjoy great food. We want to give our
customers a fantastic experience every time they visit,” explained Jay.
“We have a range of different options on the menu from individual meals to share plates. One of our most popular dishes is our signature pork belly! Packed full of flavour with crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. It’s a must-try whenever you come to visit.”
For the latest specials and information, head to Hop Space’s Facebook page. For any enquiries or to make a booking call (07) 3808 4880 or visit their website www. hopspacebar.com.au.
Are you ready to make this your year to take control of your health and fitness? Here are some ways to stick to your New Year's fitness resolutions!
It’s another New Year, which means you may have some new resolutions to conquer. Do you find yourself wanting to get fit every year, but just can’t seem to make it happen? You’re not alone. Studies have shown that while 95% of New Year’s Resolutions are health and fitness related, many of us abandon them as early as mid-January.
While you may have had New Year’s fitness resolutions that didn’t stick in the past, the first step to making a change is recognising where
your good intentions fell off and didn’t result in action. It’s not that you didn’t have what it took to succeed, but more likely that you didn’t clearly define your goals and develop a foolproof action plan.
This year, instead of making excuses and letting another year go by without reaching your fitness goals, here are some super helpful and effective ways to set yourself up for success and ensure your fitness resolution fires up instead of fizzling out this year.
Big, ambitious goals are accomplished through small daily habits. Instead of setting New Year’s resolutions that are focused on the distant end goal, like “run a marathon” or “lose thirty
pounds”, focus on the consistent steps needed to get there.
Once you know where you want to be in three, six, or twelve months, work backwards and get granular to define what you need to do every day to reach your goal. Taking small steps consistently will help you bridge the gap from where you are to where you want to be.
Shifting your mindset to focus on actionable steps that change your daily lifestyle, rather than letting the days go by without taking action, will help you make real progress and keep your motivation levels high.
Take a moment to write out your resolution and place it somewhere you will see first thing in the morning. This is an effective way to keep your goal front of mind as you start each day and reaffirm why you’re making positive daily lifestyle changes.
Whether you place a sticky note on the bathroom mirror or magnet it to the fridge, this small visual reminder can make a huge difference.
If you never work out, don’t start with a goal that involves working out 6 days a week. You’ll get burnt out before the first week is up. Instead, set a smaller, more attainable goal that won’t overwhelm you. Start with 30 minutes 3 days a week while you build your strength and stamina up. Once that becomes a habit, add another day or an additional 15 minutes to the 3 days. It’s important to build a solid foundation first.
Studies show it takes 66 days on average to form a habit. So, if you stick with your smaller goals for 2-3 months, it will be much easier to keep it going and accomplish bigger goals.
There’s power in numbers. Surrounding yourself with people working towards similar goals will help keep you motivated and disciplined. If you don’t have someone in your circle of friends or family who will hold you accountable, consider joining a local class or club or even a group online. Activity trackers can also help give you a little boost of motivation each day.
Keep yourself motivated to achieve your New Year’s fitness resolution by deciding on a reward for small accomplishments along the way. Going back to the example at the beginning, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds, reward yourself for every 2 pounds you lose with something fun and exciting, but that won’t set you back. For example, new yoga pants, a night out dancing with friends, tickets to the next game of your favourite sports team, a cooking class, etc. It’s important to decide the rewards and milestones in advance though, so you always know what you’re working toward.
New Year’s fitness resolutions can be an amazing way to set intentions for your year, reset your priorities, and achieve your goals. If you start with a clear action plan, a strong community, and a positive mindset, you’re off to a great start on your journey!
Art is naturally linked to creativity, an attribute that is increasingly being touted as one of the most important factors for the success of individuals, organizations, and cultures.
The truth is that art is vital, it has no boundaries. It enables people to play with materials, express their thinking, problem solve and make sense of emotions. For children, art is a way to communicate their ideas. Here are just some of the benefits of art for children.
1. Art promotes creativity. Creativity is the ability to think outside the proverbial box, to string two unrelated ideas together in a new way. Solutions to major problems and breakthroughs of all kinds are linked to creativity.
Research indicates that a child who is exposed to the arts acquires a special ability to think creatively, be original, discover, innovate, and create intellectual property - key attributes for individual success and social prosperity in the twenty-first century.
2. Art builds fine motor skills. Gripping a paintbrush, drawing dots and lines, mixing colours, cutting with scissors, controlling a glue stick or squeezing a glue bottle, kneading and rolling play dough, and tearing paper—all of these tasks require increasing amounts of dexterity and coordination, yet they are so fun and rewarding that children want to do them over and over. As kids engage in art activities over time, their fine motor skills improve.
3. Scribbling is a precursor to writing. Babies and toddlers begin by scribbling randomly, back and forth. But the more they scribble, the more they can control the crayon and its movements across the paper.
As children learn to control their scribbling, they make a wider variety of shapes, eventually making all the shapes necessary to write the letters of the alphabet.

Equine therapy, also known as horse therapy, is a unique form of therapy that uses horses as a tool for emotional and physical healing. It is a holistic approach that can help individuals of all ages improve their mental and physical well-being. But what makes equine therapy so special?
For starters, horses are intuitive animals that are naturally sensitive to human emotions and behaviour. When working with a horse, you must be present and mindful in order to establish a connection. This mindfulness and presence can help individuals in therapy learn how to be more in tune with their own emotions and behaviours.
Horses also have a unique ability to mirror emotions and behaviours. This means that if a person is anxious, the horse will mirror that anxiety. This mirroring effect can help individuals in therapy see their own behaviours and
emotions reflected in the horse, allowing them to understand and work through them in a safe and controlled environment.
But equine therapy isn’t just about horseback riding. It’s about the interactions and relationship between the horse and the individual. Simple exercises such as haltering, leading, and grooming can teach people how to approach and interact with others in a respectful and aware way.
Equine therapy can also help individuals develop important life skills such as identifying and managing feelings, communication and interpersonal skills, setting boundaries, and overcoming fears. It can also be a fun and unique way to improve overall well-being.
So, if you’re looking for something different and exciting to try for your mental and physical well-being, consider equine therapy. With the guidance of a trained therapist and the help of some four-legged friends, you may be surprised at the positive changes you can make in your life.
If you or your children struggle with anxiety, ADHA or behavioural issues contact Doreen for information on private sessions.
MANAGING ANXIETY SESSION’S
Originating in America during the 70s the dance style has now made its way to kids all across Australia, with its physical and social benefits recognised.
Breakdancing has started to make an impact on children, with its ever-increasing popularity. Along with being a fun way to dance to some of the latest and most popular music with your friends, breakdancing also has many social and physical advantages for children wanting to join.
Breakdancing combines the core body strength and flexibility of a gymnast, with the explosive power of a sprinter. The dance style gives children a full body workout without it feeling like they are fitting in their daily 30 minutes of exercise. As breakdancing is not susceptible to weather changes and is most often held indoors, classes will also keep the kids burning their excess energy year-round.
Breakdancing classes give children plenty of opportunities to unleash their creative side! Every lesson encourages students to express themselves through dance and gives them the chance to improvise new steps and combinations. Creating new steps and applying their own flair to each move can work towards developing and improving their self-expression and confidence.
During every class, kids will have the opportunity to interact with other students. Although often thought of as an individual sport, lessons give children plenty of time to work with their peers on routines and specific steps, encouraging them to improve their social skills. It also provides a space where children can meet new friends, expand their social circle outside of school and learn how to effectively co-operate and work with others.
The beauty of breakdancing is that anybody can join! No matter what age or gender you are, breakdancing is an activity for everyone. The variation of movements is not dependent on how tall, small or strong you are but on kids' willingness to learn something new and utilise their creativity. All skill levels are also welcome, whether your child is a beginner or experienced in the dance style, variations to moves give children the opportunity to tailor the steps and routines to their skill level.
At Reset Dance Studio our classes are suitable for both boys and girls from 2 to 15 years of age. We offer many different classes from hip-hop, break, ballet, jazz, acro, singing & more

Drop the attitude, and try a gentler touch. You risk alienating your supporters if you keep stonewalling them. People are not mind readers, for one thing. So getting frustrated because they can’t intuit what you consider “right” is unfair.
If you’re wondering what people are thinking about you, Pisces, here’s a novel idea: Ask them! Soliciting feedback can be a great strategy for building connection under today’s moon in your interpersonal zone.
Forget about begging your fitness buddy to meet you at the gym today. Self-motivation is the name of the game, so pop in the earbuds and head off for a solo workout. If you need other people to pump you up, jump into a group cardio class.

Sharing isn’t just caring today, Taurus; it’s a savvy way to conserve your resources. Find clever ways to pool funds with people. Maybe you go in on a pricey purchase that you’ll all get good use of.
Rule of thumb for your personal life today: Keep family out of your business! It’s hard enough to find someone of enduring value who you also feel the sparks with. Trust your own feelings and stop seeking approval.
Cut through confusion and go on a fact-finding mission. Your worry can be quelled when you have real data in front of you. Reach out to an expert if you’re truly stumped. Internet searches can only take you so far and might even be misleading.

Take one for the team, Leo. You may need to make a small sacrifice in the name of the greater good. Today could find you playing Best Supporting Castmate instead of the starring role or backing someone up from behind the scenes.
Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
Turn the heat up slowly today, Scorpio, even if you’re feeling a sense of urgency about matters. Firing off accusations could cause people to freeze. Yes, there’s a problem to deal with, but tackle it as a team rather than polarizing to opposite “sides.”
Although you’re blessed by today’s moon in Virgo, don’t force your agenda. The my-way-or-thehighway approach might win the battle but it will lose the war. Even if you ARE in the right, rubbing people’s noses in it is not the way to go. Resist the urge to say “I told you so” or gloat over a win.

You’re not the type to rule with an iron fist, but today, a firm hand is required if you want to actualize your vision. That might begin with YOU getting organized, Sagittarius. Take charge of a plan, breaking it down into tasks and timelines, then sharing this with others who are involved.
Haste makes waste, Libra, especially when it comes to your decluttering missions. Although you’re ready to clear the decks, don’t be so quick to ditch those sentimental objects or generously hand over a family heirloom just because you aren’t using it at the moment. You could regret these decisions later.

If you can dream it, you can do, they say. But we don’t need to tell a Capricorn that you also need a plan to bring any mega milestones to the finish line. If you’re feeling daunted by your own ambitions (not unusual, we know), try breaking your project down into smaller steps.
One of the most popular beachside destinations in Australia, Noosa, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has everything you could want from a holiday. Lakes, stunning beaches, national parks and a hinterland, markets, day spas, golf courses, excellent food and lots of activities. Whether you want action or relaxation, Noosa has it all.
From zooming down the river to meandering through the markets, there’s always something to do in this seaside town.
While many people associate Noosa with the sand and sea, the seaside resort town is surrounded by lush greenery and bushland. The Noosa Hinterland is perfect for nature lovers and has some excellent walks to enjoy, even for the least green among us.
Why not check out the Botanic Gardens? Just a short drive from Cooroy on the shores of Lake Macdonald. There are more than eight hectares of native and international plant species to discover and there’s an abundance of wildlife that call the gardens home. There’s also a lily pond, picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids.
For those looking for exceptional walks around Noosa, look no further than the Great Noosa Trail. Explore the eight connected trails that pass through the national park and parklands through the Hinterland. There are short hourlong strolls through to a few hours’ trails.
Along the trails, there are fantastic lookouts to admire the scenery as you go, including a spectacular view of the mountains.
Speaking of spectacular views, head to the top of Mt Tinbeerwah. You can drive almost to the top so don’t worry about exhausting your legs too much and the walk itself is only about 300m long. The viewing platform at the top provides 360-degree views from the north of the Sunshine Coast. For the stargazers, head up around midnight. The mountain is out of range of the suburban lights so the starry sky shines bright as can be.
If walking is not your thing, there is no better way to discover the best of Noosa and its surroundings than by bike!
