LOGAN RIVER
FAMILY HISTORY INC
By Hazel Hillier, Retired Teacher
This organisation is a great help if you want to know more about your family history or about the local area and its beginnings. They meet monthly in the Progress Hall in Barbarella Drive, Springwood, and always have a guest speaker there. But their large library, which includes items of local interest, books, CDs, microfiche and magazines, as well as computers with access to online data dases, is open three days a week, Thursday to Saturday, from 9.30 till 1.30. People there will help you with your own family history and are especially helpful if you aren’t familiar with the information that is available online.
In addition, they have regular social functions and put out a quarterly magazine, called the
Dugullumba Times, Dugullumba being the name that the local indigenous people gave to the Logan River, and means Home of the Hornet. It is full of interesting articles, together with photographs, about, for example the Overland Telegraph from Adelaide to Darwin and the 150th Anniversary of the discovery of the Fassifern Valley. They also get journals from other family history organisations, which can be borrowed from their library.

It costs less than $3 a month to be a member, they can be contacted on (07)3208 3993, they are on Facebook (Logan River Family History Society) their e-mail address is loganriverfhs@hotmail.com and they have a website: www.loganriverfamilyistorysociety. com.au.
It is certainly worthwhile checking them out if you are interested in your own family history or the history of the Logan area.

BLUEPRINT TO GUIDE OUR CITY'S GROWTH
Draft Logan Plan 2025 endorsed today
Options to create more affordable housing, along with a range of policy decisions to manage unprecedented local growth, are key platforms of the new draft Logan Plan 2025, endorsed by Logan City Council today.
Terrace housing is proposed for the first time locally as Council tackles the dual challenge of housing affordability while delivering and advocating for critical infrastructure for emerging neighbourhoods.
Terrace housing offers greater density and the convenience of community living without overheads such as body corporate fees which apply to most townhouses and unit blocks.
Logan Plan 2025 (LP25), once finalised, will build on what is working well from the current planning scheme (Logan Planning Scheme 2015) as it guides city growth over the next 20 years.
The proposed new policy decisions aim to enhance the liveability, amenity and function of the city, which is one of the fastest growing areas in South East Queensland.

Proposed changes include:
• Promoting high-quality urban design with stronger guidance for subdivisions, apartments, landscaping, urban greening and streetscaping
• Providing appropriate employment land where new businesses or industries can be established, and existing ones can grow
• Prioritising more housing choices near public transport and major commercial centres
• Protecting the city’s heritage by clarifying criteria relating to the preservation and use of places of historical and cultural significance
• Introducing a new tourism code to provide confidence for investors, operators and residents to enable appropriate and economy-boosting experiences in the city
Council also aims to flick the switch on a bustling night-time economy to give residents more local entertainment options after 6pm while putting the brakes on the impacts of service stations on surrounding areas and nearby shopping centres.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said LP25 was essential to manage a future where the local population is projected to surge past 500,000 in the next decade and reach more than 600,000 by 2046.

“New residents are coming in droves to live in our great city, and we need to have a robust, well-balanced Planning Scheme to best manage the serious growth we have ahead of us,” Cr Power said.
“We want to ensure we have quality, welldesigned development in the right areas, and in a way which reflects the values of our community.”
Planning Chair, Cr Jon Raven, said the draft LP25 introduced improvements on the previous
planning scheme that would better serve the community and local lifestyles.
The new policy positions were shaped by input from the community, Councillors, specialist consultants, the development industry and university researchers.
“We already live in a fantastic city, but we want to make it even better,” Cr Raven said.
“We need to plan for the future so that our residents can benefit from the growth we’re experiencing over the next decade.”
The draft LP25 will now be submitted to the Queensland Government for a mandatory state interest review.
Once that review is completed, Council will share the draft LP25 with the community for consultation. Council will use that feedback to further improve the plan.
A final Queensland Government review follows, before the plan is expected to be adopted in late 2025.
More information on LP25 is at Logan Plan 2025 – Logan City Council

5 HUMAN FOODS YOU SHOULDN’T GIVE TO YOUR PETS
Our adorable furry companions often give us those irresistible looks, especially when we're savouring a delightful meal. While the urge to share is strong, understanding which human foods aren't suitable for our pets is crucial. Here's a concise guide on foods to avoid giving your pets, ensuring their tails keep wagging and their feathers remain unruffled.
1. Avocado: Though a delight for us, avocados should be kept far from birds, rabbits, and certain other furry pals. Avocado contains persin, a substance that, while harmless to humans, can potentially damage these animals' hearts and overall well-being.

2. Chocolate and Caffeine: Chocolate and caffeine are cherished by many, but they're strictly off-limits for our pets. These substances harbour theobromine and caffeine, culprits behind symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and even fatal consequences.

3. Grape and Raisin: Seemingly benign, grapes and raisins can pose a toxic threat to dogs. Even consuming small amounts can trigger kidney failure, manifesting as vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy.
4. Artificial Sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners like xylitol, often found in sugar-free treats, can be dangerous for pets. Ingesting xylitol can lead to a rapid release of insulin, resulting in a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, seizures, and even liver failure.
5. Onion and Garlic: While aromatic culinary staples, onions and garlic contain compounds that can trigger oxidative damage to red blood cells in pets. This can lead to anaemia and a range of health problems.
Remember, our pets rely on us for their wellbeing. By considering these guidelines and choosing pet-approved treats, you're ensuring your furry companions remain lively, content, and prepared to share countless cherished moments by your side.

ROBBY CHRISTANTO THE SMILE BEHIND ERESIDENTIAL
eet Robby Christanto, or as many fondly call him, 'Mr. Smile.' In the world of real estate, where truth and honesty can seem like a rare commodity, Robby, an accomplished Real Estate Agent at Eresidential, stands out as a rare gem.

With a proven track record of record-breaking sales, Robby's expertise, enthusiasm and tenacity shine through every encounter he has with his clients and prospective purchasers. In 2023, he even earned himself 'Agent of the Year Award - Suburb Winner for Edens Landing'.
In the following Q&A, get to know Robby as he shares his journey as a local agent.
Provide us with examples of a local property transaction that you are proud of.
I'll start by sharing the story of the ‘Eresidential Grove Road family’. We started on this journey with no prior sales in Edens Landing - might I add. Through trust and transparency, we successfully facilitated an off-market sale for
Doug, the now previous owner of 57 Grove Road, ultimately selling his property for an impressive $730,000.
This success became a stepping stone as Doug's satisfaction led him to recommend our services to his neighbours, resulting in the sale of property numbers 53 and 55 on Grove Road. Over time, our accomplishments multiplied. Fast forward, we have facilitated sales for properties numbered 30, 53, 55, 57, 59, 60, and 61 all located on Grove Road.
These successes mark the origin of our journey in Edens Landing. By helping these 14 families, we've earned a reputation for providing a distinct approach to real estate.
Here's another story I'd like to share. A young couple wanted to sell their home, but when the conversation delved deeper, it was revealed that one of them had returned to studying. Concerned about potential variations in their borrowing capacity that might hinder their ability to repurchase later, we recommended postponing the sale and encouraged them to consult with their mortgage broker. Following a consultation with their broker, they came to the realisation that proceeding with the sale was not the appropriate choice.
When it comes to real estate, our approach involves not only helping our clients achieve optimal prices for their current homes but also facilitating the purchase of their next property while at times organising a simultaneous settlement (which can be tricky). We often undertaken research and negotiation on our clients behalf, without any attached obligations or additional fees, such as conjunction fees with other agents. In another case, we even halted a sale for three months to help assist this client in finding the perfect property before proceeding the sale. Once their dream home was found, as if it were destined, we managed to sell their property within only a week's time.
2. What can a seller & buyer expect from you that stands out from the others?
Sellers can expect us to secure the best price for their property, maintain transparency throughout the selling process, and have the hardest-working agents working for them.

Buyers can anticipate exceptional service and honesty from us. We make a point to disclose all information to the best of our knowledge, even if from time to time, we got burnt because of this.
On one occasion, we encountered difficulties when an unknown building issue came to light. Neither the seller nor we knew. Unfortunately, the buyer assumed we were being dishonest. As a result, we now recommend clients conduct a building and pest inspections before listing a property on the market.
3. Which suburbs do you service? And why did you pick these areas?
Edens Landing, Holmview, and the surrounding suburbs are our focus. Initially, we chose Holmview because we had performed well there, selling 62 lots for development in just 2 years. Our intention was to continue our strong presence in Holmview. However, while door knocking, I stumbled upon Edens Landing and found the suburb to be very welcoming. That's where the story began with the Grove Road Families. One success followed another, and momentum began to build. Little did we know, I now find myself in the Edens Landing and Holmview area 6 days a week, and the rest is history. We feel that the suburb is calling us :)
4. Tell us little about your family.
I have my lovely wife, Anisa, who always support me along the way and my 2 kids Ralph (will be 9 years old soon) and Abby (6 years old).
5. Where is your favourite coffee spot in Logan?
I love HIT Café in Beenleigh. Their coffee is great! I always support them, and my clients also agree that they serve great coffees!

EMBRACE EMPTYING YOUR CUP, RENEWING ENERGY, & IGNITING INNOVATION

As a small business owner, your dedication and passion drive the success of your venture. However, amidst the relentless pursuit of growth and prosperity, one crucial aspect often gets overlooked – taking time off. Embracing the art of emptying your cup, renewing your energy, and igniting innovation through regular breaks is not just a luxury but a necessity for sustained success and prosperity. September is the month that SBIS encourages and celebrates the “Small Business Big Day Off.” Here are three essential points to consider:
1. Embrace Emptying Your Cup: Running a small business can be all-consuming, leaving little room for anything else. Yet, taking time off to step back from the daily grind is vital. By emptying your cup, you free your mind from the constant flow of work-related thoughts and stress. This mental decluttering allows for greater clarity, improved problem-solving, and the ability to view your business from a fresh perspective. Whether it's a short weekend getaway or a more extended vacation, giving yourself permission to detach from work enables you to return with renewed focus and creativity.
2. Renewing Energy: Small business owners often juggle multiple roles, which can lead to burnout if not managed well. Constantly pushing yourself without adequate breaks can drain your energy, impacting your productivity and overall well-being. Taking time off allows you to recharge physically, mentally, and emotionally. Rest and relaxation promote better sleep patterns, reduced stress levels, and increased energy reserves. You'll notice heightened productivity, improved decision-making, and a newfound
enthusiasm for tackling challenges as you return to work after a well-deserved break.

3. Igniting Innovation: In the pursuit of success, innovation is the lifeblood of any small business. However, continuous work without breaks can stifle creativity and lead to stagnation. Stepping away from your daily routine opens up space for fresh ideas and perspectives to emerge. Exposure to new environments, experiences, and activities stimulates your mind and encourages innovative thinking. It's during moments of relaxation and contemplation that breakthrough ideas often occur. Taking time off creates a conducive environment for innovation, ultimately propelling your business to new heights.
Fuelling prosperity as a small business owner involves more than just relentless work and determination. Embracing the art of taking time off is vital to achieving long-term success. Emptying your cup, renewing your energy, and igniting innovation through regular breaks will benefit you as an individual and positively impact the growth and prosperity of your business. So, the next time you find yourself hesitating to take a break, remember that stepping away can be the catalyst for reaching new levels of success.

GOODBYE FROM THE MOONLIGHT BANDIT CAFE
By Laura Thompson, Moonlight Bandit CaféWhen I decided to close for good, I did feel like I failed, but I realised thanks to the many people that have come in since I announced our closing, that we had been successful and we had made a difference.

I think sometimes people are too busy looking at what went wrong when they don’t win, they forget to remember what they did right to be in the race to begin with.
My goal was to make money of course, I wanted a living. I knew when you start out that you don’t instantly start getting a wage for yourself, it takes time to build a reputation and make people want to come to you. I may not have achieved an income but I survived and the business survived and we did build a relationship with the community. I have met amazing people on my journey that have helped my confidence and enriched my life more than money ever would have. To watch
little kids drag their parents in for a baby chinno or play with the orange car is priceless.
We need money to survive, but life is much more than that, money comes and goes and we don’t even remember what we spent it on but we do remember the times we spent with people! I would need pages to list the people I have met that I admire and care about and if I could make them smile or feel better than they did when they walked into the Cafe, it was all worth it to me.
I did create a place where people felt comfortable, I introduced people to each other and I listened as best as I could when someone needed to talk, big businesses don’t do that. I did my best to help promote other small businesses in our area and I will remain an advocate for small business because we are in the front line with our customers, we are there for each other and we are all unique in our different ways.
In short, I would like to thank Rochedale South for their support and remember to support those around you.

A Life-threatening Opportunity
By Jasper LimHow deep can humans dive?

Divers around the world delight in mastering the extreme water pressure, overcoming the ocean’s deep unknown, and conquering their own fears. Diving is a sport that’s loved by many. It is also a dangerous sport, yet those who love it can’t get enough of it. The pressure pushing in on their bodies… the unknown below… imagine if you were attempting this! With 3 types of dives, there comes 3 record holders – James Cameron, Ahmed Gabr and Herbert Nitsch. These divers have pushed their bodies to the extreme to break records. James Cameron is a man with a love of the ocean, and a record holder for the deepest vessel dive. Ahmed Gabr is a record holder for the deepest scuba dive. And Herbert Nitsch is famous for his breath hold and his free dive record.
James Cameron is a man with a fascination of the sea, and the record holder of the deepest vessel dive in the ocean. Inside his submarine, the “Challenger,” he dove 11 kilometres into the deepest part of the world’s oceans, the Mariana Trench. There he stayed for three hours, gathering data about the ocean floor. With this precious information, scientists around the world benefited from these new discoveries. Vessel diving might be hard, but how much harder is this compared to scuba diving?
The man who currently holds the world record for the deepest scuba dive is Ahmed Gabr. Diving down 332 meters, he had to slow down his heart rate and he had to use 90 tanks of air. Surprisingly, it only took him 12 minutes to dive down; however, it took him 15 hours to get back up which reduced the effect of water pressure on his body and the risk of narcosis.

Ahmed Gabr dealt with many problems; however, free divers must overcome even more challenges.

On June 16th, 2012, an amazing event took place off the coast of Greece. Herbert Nitsch, the record holder for the longest breath hold, broke another record, the deepest free dive. Diving down 253 meters without any breathing equipment, he made a new world record. Medical divers had to assist him because of the effects of the water pressure on his body which gave him overwhelming decompression sickness. Herbert Nitsch’s record is unarguably the most impressive.

Incredibly, James Cameron, Ahmed Gabr, and Herbert Nitsch dedicated their heart and soul to these life-changing yet life-threatening, worldrecord opportunities. Importantly, people learnt a lot from these ocean record-breakers – the strength of the human spirit, the strength of the human body, and the importance of training, hard work and team support.

Pay close attention to your cash flow during the next two weeks, especially if you've had lots of outgoings recently. You might have to tighten your belt to get you through a lean financial phase or promise yourself that you'll avoid the shops so you aren't tempted to make lots of impulse buys.
You're in a dreamy and preoccupied mood, so you seem to be wandering around in a world of your own. Who, you? Why not take the day off so you can relax in peace, without having to worry about making mistakes or giving people the wrong impression. Both of these are easily done right now. Try to steer clear of alcohol, because that will make you feel worse.
Today's Full Moon is urging you to face up to any worries that are currently nagging away at the back of your mind. Although you'd probably like to pretend that such anxieties don't exist, they aren't going to vanish of their own accord. Instead, you've got to do something about them, and the sooner the better.
This is a good day for getting together with some of the family because you'll enjoy one another's company. However, someone could get their knickers in a twist, which will lead to a tricky atmosphere and possibly even some raised voices. This is especially likely if the conversation strays into memories of the past.
It will be hard to keep the topic away from work, but it would still be fun to gather some of your loved ones around you and talk to them. There's plenty to do in the way of physical exercise and work on the job as well as around the house. The flow of physical energy now and in weeks ahead can make you more aggressive or competitive concerning work, co- workers, or employees.
Ideally, you should get all dressed up and then head for the nearest social event because that's exactly what you're in the mood for today. You're feeling very convivial and outgoing, whether you're with people that you know like the back of your hand or total strangers. If you've recently moved house, you'll befriend your neighbours soon.
You don't have as much energy as usual today, so pace yourself accordingly. If you try to force yourself to do too much you'll simply run out of stamina at some point and have to admit defeat, which will make you feel embarrassed and possibly even slightly depressed. So do yourself a favour and take it easy today.
Consider ways to improve your health. If you're well aware that there's more of you than there should be, or that you' re skimping on proper food at the moment, you know what to do. If you're concerned about strange symptoms, seek medical help as soon as possible so you can find out what's going on and take the appropriate action.
Your home life is looking really good today and you'll thoroughly enjoy being with your nearest and dearest whenever you get the chance. You might even decide to alter some of your arrangements so you can spend more time at home. It's a wonderful day for recharging your batteries in familiar and comforting settings.
Are you feeling agitated or annoyed about something? Do something constructive about it, otherwise you're likely to take out your feelings on whoever happens to be around. This means you might pick a quarrel over something really silly, simply so you can let off steam. It will help to stay busy and physically active.
This is a great day for talking to someone who has the sort of wisdom, experience and knowledge that you really admire. This might be your boss, some other authority figure, an older relative, or anyone else who you feel is your mentor. They could give you some helpful hints, point you in the right direction or simply listen as you pour your heart out. Secrecy intrigues you.
Tidy up your immediate surroundings, especially if you're starting to accumulate a lot of clutter. Get rid of anything you no longer need, or put it in a safe place until you can decide what to do with it. You might also take part in some neighborhood activities, especially if these involve solving a local problem.

NEW PLAN TO BOOST CREATIVE HEART
Avision to support the City of Logan’s creative economy was endorsed this week. The Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan 2023-2027 was developed by Logan City Council after extensive consultation with local residents, community groups and cultural practitioners.
One of the first actions under the new plan will be the implementation of the Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) Cultural Precinct’s Artists Development program.

This program caters for creatives involved in drama, dance, music, contemporary performance, visual art, writing and comedy.
Specialist staff from Logan Arts will host a soft-pitch session from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, September 15 at KBF.
The session will highlight the support on offer from Council for emerging and established artists.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said the new Art, Culture and Heritage plan would give local creatives the opportunity to share ideas and skills.
“We have developed this plan to spark new collaborations to create distinctly Logan experiences,” Cr Power said.
Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall said technology was a key element of the new plan.
“Digital technology will be used to bring art into the community outside of a traditional gallery setting,” Cr Hall said.
“This plan will help guide the services, events and facilities operating within our creative spaces.”

SAFE HAVEN EMPORIUM
The new Safe Haven Emporium has opens its doors last month at the Loganholme Hyperdome shopping centre.

Here are 3 reasons why you should consider visiting Safe Haven's Pre-Loved Fashion Emporium:

Designer pieces at a fraction of the original price

Pre-loved clothing is an incredible investment. You can find designer pieces at a fraction of their original purchase price, essentially getting luxury for less.
It's sustainable - give clothing a second chance
Some clothing is just too beautiful not to be given a second chance and needs to be worn again. Rather than sending all of that beautiful history to landfill, your purchase from a second-hand store like Safe Haven Emporium is having a vital impact on the way companies do business, both environmentally and socially.
You’re supporting the community

Our Emporium is a friendly place where women can safely express their concerns and share their burdens about their experiences. Proceeds from the sale of clothing directly fund the work of Safe Haven Community, assisting women and their children escape domestic abuse.

THE BEST VS. WORST TYPES of protein you can eat
Protein, the powerhouse macronutrient crucial for muscle growth and overall health, comes in various forms. Making informed choices about the types of protein you consume can significantly impact your fitness goals. Let's explore the best and worst options to guide your dietary decisions.

The Best
Lean Poultry: Chicken and turkey breast are lean protein sources, rich in essential amino acids. They aid in muscle repair and provide a steady supply of energy.

Quinoa: A complete protein with all nine essential amino acids, quinoa is a versatile grain that fuels muscle repair and provides a sustained energy boost.
Edamame: These young soybeans are rich in protein and fibre, making them an ideal plantbased option for muscle support.
The Worst

Processed Meats: Sausages, deli meats, and bacon are high in sodium and saturated fats, linked to health issues when consumed excessively.

Protein-Packed Chocolate Bars: Often marketed as healthy, some chocolate bars enriched with protein may also harbour high sugars.

Sugary Yoghurt: There are a ton of yoghurts in the grocery store that pose as a healthy breakfast snack or breakfast alternative. They claim to be "light," low in fat, or nonfat, or it could even have the total calories front and center. But the real truth is in the nutrition facts.

BACK TO NATURE PLANS FOR LOCAL CREEK
Restoration works to breathe new life into Slacks Creek
Atributary of Slacks Creek that flows across Mabel Park is set to be restored as a vibrant, natural urban ecosystem with the help of a community-focused environment initiative.
The revegetation project aims to improve habitat quality for native aquatic and land species, as well as establishing community connection with the waterway.
Around 600 metres of Council-owned land, including a 200 metre concrete-lined channel, will be restored with native plants after weeds are removed.
The local community will be asked to help to co-design spaces to enable better connections with the waterway.

The $1.375 million project is co-funded by Logan City Council and the Australian Government.
The Australian Government funding of $1 million was provided through the Urban Rivers and Catchments program.
The program supports projects that improve urban green space, waterway quality and riparian and aquatic habitats to better benefit native species.
Council will contribute $300,000 through the Environment Levy’s Slacks Creek Recovery program, and $75,000 in other funding.
Logan City Council Mayor Darren Power said the benefits of the revegetation project would go beyond environmental improvement.
“Working with locals to improve this waterway not only restores a habitat for native flora and fauna, but is a huge benefit for those who live,
work and play alongside Slacks Creek, and in particular, the popular Mabel Park,” Councillor Power said.
Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek MP said the Urban Rivers and Catchments program highlights the importance of restoring and protecting our urban creeks and rivers.

“We want to leave nature better off for our kids and grandkids, and that means repairing damage to our environment and better protecting it for the future,” Minister Plibersek said.
“That’s why we’re investing $200 million in projects to revitalise our urban rivers and creeks. We want to support the groups on the ground who understand the needs in their community and are working to better manage and restore their local environment.

“Nearly half of all nationally listed threatened animals and a quarter of our threatened plants occur in urban areas. We need to act now to protect them.”
Federal Treasurer and Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers MP said taking care of the environment for future generations is a priority.

“Ever since I was a kid growing up in this area, I learnt to really cherish the experience of being around our local creeks and waterways,” Minister Chalmers said.
“We want to get our local waterways in better nick so our kids and their kids can continue to enjoy this really beautiful part of our local community for generations to come.
“With this million-dollar investment, we’ll clean up Slacks Creek, improving water quality and conditions for our native frogs, turtles and birdlife.”
