ROCHEDALE MARKETS By Hazel Hillier, Retired Teacher

F

rom a roadside stall to a discount fruit shop, the Bellas family have seen it all. In 1971, Peter and John Bellas bought a 20-acre farm on the corner of Rochedale and Priestdale Rds. On it were 49 sheep, a goat and a pet pig, also orange, lemon and mandarin trees. At first, they tried selling the fruit to a 4 Square shop at Mt Gravatt, but

for some reason, it didn’t sell, so they set up a roadside stall from a truck on weekends, selling fruit at 10 for $1 or $3 a box. When Arndale opened in 1974, they leased a shop there, but sold it after a week as they missed the fresh air at Rochedale. Initially, they were only allowed to sell what they grew, so the produce increased to include strawberries, chokos, silverbeet, avocadoes and parsley. They had bore water, so put in a sprinkler system on the top part of the farm to water the crops. In 1976, they opened a fruit shop called Farmers’ Market which was open from Thursdays to Sundays. They started buying from other local farmers as well as the Rocklea markets. However, they had to close the shop and reapply for a general store licence in order to include more variety. They reopened a bigger shop with a coldroom, but they were still only

open from Thursdays to Sundays. Eventually, it opened all week, with all the family members working there. They leased out the business a few times over the next few years, and although the name changed to Rochedale Markets, they retained ownership of the land. In 2015, the Wright family took over the lease and still retain it today.

BALI

B

ali. Just hearing the destination will immediately bring to mind a preconceived idea of what it is, but after returning to the Indonesian island in August for my 4th visit, I ask that you open up your mind and allow yourself the opportunity to visit and explore this unique and diverse destination before completely ruling it out. The destination is filled with a plethora of activities and cultural discoveries, or you can simply enjoy the relaxed pace from your chosen hotel. As previously mentioned, I have travelled to Bali on a number of occasions. This time I travelled with my 8 of my closest friends

10 | Logan Guide

(all of us completed high school together!) to celebrate our 40th birthday year. It was a short yet sweet 5 nights in Seminyak where we stayed together in a 4-bedroom villa that was well located within an easy walk to ‘Eat Street’ and a short taxi ride to the beach. For a lot of the ladies it was the first time leaving children and husbands to take time for themselves and we certainly made the most of it! From fabulous restaurant experiences to watching the sun set from beanbags on the beach all the way to

a 5 hour day spa treatment and a Blow Bar experience (someone washing and drying your hair while you sip sparkling wine?! Take me back already!) . Bali often cops a bad reputation due to the media attention the ‘not so nice’ Australian’s draw to it, but if you stay away from the traditional party areas you will see past this side of Bali. For starters, everywhere you visit you will find little baskets on the floor with incense sticks and little goodies such as sweets, fruits and sometimes even some money and a cigarette. In front of shops and homes, in the middle of cross roads and junctions, and on temple shrines. These are a gift to the gods and this daily dedication shows to the beautiful spirit of the Balinese people. There is always a small child (or two!) to smile and wave to you from a shop door or passing bike which warms your heart. We had an incredible shopping experience at one of the boutiques in Seminyak. Jules the Label is a Western Australia inspired fashion label. She creates beautiful and affordable, easy fit, everyday wear. Each of her pieces is created using artisan design, hand carved wooden stamps, wax, natural dyes and fabrics and they feel incredible to wear – you will often find me in one of her pieces on a Friday in store!

I recommend that if you haven’t yet visited Bali, or have it on your list, please consider this beautiful destination as it does have something to offer everyone. Out of Brisbane we have direct flights each day with Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Batik Airways. For recommendations on places to stay or anything else, please reach out - I’m more than happy to assist! Until next month,

A SUSTAINABLE SIP:

LOGAN CHEERS TO 10-CENT REFUNDS ON WINE & SPIRITS

ogan is raising its glass to an exciting new era in recycling! Starting November 1, the Containers for Change program is broadening its horizons to welcome glass wine and pure spirit bottles, offering a 10-cent refund at container refund points across the state. This marks a significant expansion of an already popular recycling initiative that has been leaving a positive imprint on both our environment and our local communities. The inclusion of glass wine and spirits bottles in the Containers for Change scheme represents a fresh opportunity to inspire folks to recycle, reducing litter and waste along the way. This isn't just about environmental stewardship; it's also a boon for the economy and a means of bolstering our local communities. Remarkably, over $700 million in container refunds have been returned to Queenslanders, with $11 million channeled into charitable donations and community group support.

The expansion of eligible containers, now including glass wine and spirit bottles ranging from 150ml to 3L, is a significant step towards making recycling more accessible and convenient. What's especially commendable is that you can still receive a refund for these containers, even if they lack the 10-cent refund marking during the transition period, with beverage manufacturers having until January 2027 to display the 10-cent refund mark on their labels. Containers for Change has been nothing short of a triumph in Queensland, with over 7 billion containers redeemed through refund points as at September 2023, and an additional 1.4 billion containers recycled through kerbside programs. These impressive statistics bear witness to the unwavering commitment of communities like Logan and its residents to build a greener and more sustainable future. Finding your nearest refund point in Logan or anywhere else in Queensland is a breeze—just visit the Containers for Change website. This online tool will help you effortlessly locate the most convenient recycling point for your glass wine and spirit containers. Logan's residents now have a remarkable chance to contribute to a more ecoconscious future while enjoying the perks of a 10-cent refund for all eligible drink containers. Let's rally behind this initiative, Logan, and take strides towards preserving our environment, one bottle at a time. As stewards of our natural beauty in Queensland, it's high time we lead the way in recycling and sustainable living. Queensland Container Recycling 18 Chetwynd St, Loganholme

KIMBERLEY SUPPORTS R U OK DAY

A

t Kimberley College, R U OK day on the 14 September kicked off with a sea of yellow and black as students arrived at school dressed in the event colours and made a gold coin donation to this worthwhile charity and national day of action. Throughout the day, students participated in dedicated lessons and activities organised by teaching staff to support the key messages of encouraging people to stay connected and to have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. The day is more than just a chance to dress up and not wear school uniform. At Kimberley College, the college wanted the students to understand and engage with the key messages and to take away some useful strategies, be better equipped, appropriate to their age group, to cope with mental health challenges. At Kimberley College, health and wellbeing is embedded in the college values and is a fundamental element of the college’s pastoral care model which is focused on creating a mentally healthy environment for students to feel safe and secure to learn, play and grow. According to the Black Dog Institute, 75% of mental health problems emerge before the age of 25 and one in seven young people aged 4 to 17 years’ experience a mental health condition in any given year. The time at school is critical in

14 | Logan Guide

delivering prevention and intervention strategies to develop resilient and mentally healthy adults. With plenty of larger-than-life size games on the green, the middle school students (years 7 – 9) made delicious breakfast pancakes with honey from the college hives for their peers. Primary school students spent the morning having fun and learning a dance as exercise and sport is a terrific way to make you feel better. Other activities included the students painting worry rocks and an extra special visit by the therapy dogs from Empower Assistance Dogs to each classroom to spread some joy and positive vibes. Even the smallest students from Prep and years 1 & 2 got behind the day with cupcakes and decorated leaves with special messages for their tree installation in their playground. While senior students were undertaking exams on the day, they were catered for with a special Senior Study Chill Out Zone. It was a space where the students could relax, refresh, reset in between exams and it was stocked with essentials like fruit, chocolate, and crackers to see them through and hopefully alleviate some of those exam nerves and stress. It was a day, jam packed with engaging activities to support lessons that focused on the key messages of R U OK Day, and the importance of relationships and staying connected and that by asking one simple question, R U OK?, it can really change a life. Kimberley College is taking applications now for Years 9 to 12 for 2024 and all other years for 2025 and beyond. To find out more, visit www.kimberley.college

The Story Behind

ATP Seafood

18 | Logan Guide

L

ittle over a year ago, I noticed the sign ‘ATP Seafood’ go up on Bryants Rd as I was driving through Loganholme. Those three letters, ATP, caught my attention as any tennis enthusiasts would know the reason why! It took us over 12 months though, to formally get together with the owners Brendan & Bradley to introduce and share their story to the wider Logan City community. It is difficult to not be a fan of what they do and what they provide to the locals from their Loganholme store. And here our team have put few questions together for Brendan & Bradley to share their thoughts with you and how they are bringing next level ‘Fresh Seafood’ to the area. Can you introduce us to the people behind ATP Seafood business and share the story of how it all began? Brendan & Bradley are the 2 founders of ATP Seafood, we are cousins and we both grew up in Port Lincoln South Australia, we have always been a close family and enjoyed fishing and camping, from a young age our parents taught us how to catch clean and store seafood correctly. Whilst living in Port Lincoln we both worked and gained hands on experience in all parts of the seafood industry. From Offshore wild

We missed that regular sitting around on a deck chair having a chat and a beer eating freshly shucked oysters

When we moved to Queensland we missed that regular sitting around on a deck chair having a chat and a beer eating freshly shucked oysters, we both tried hard to find fresh oysters in QLD but had no luck, So we decided to ship up our own Live bags of oysters from Port Lincoln, Once our oysters arrived our QLD mates were stunned with the quality and already jumping on for the next shipment, the word got around very quick with our circle of friend and a couple of deliveries later we were talking about starting up a business. In 2017 ATP Seafood was born, we both wanted to create a family business and named after our 3 kids at the time, so we called it ATP Seafood, A and the T stands for Brendan’s 2 daughters Airlie & Taylah, and the P stands Bradley’s son Phoenix.

Logan Guide | 19

With the massive support from our Partners, friends, and regular support customers we wouldn’t be where we are today. What inspired your journey into the seafood industry, and how many years have you been actively involved? We both have been involved in the seafood industry our whole lives commercially and recreationally. We just love being involved from all angles. This doesn’t feel like work but just having lots of fun sourcing fresh produce, creating our own taste, for example, our ‘Smoked Salmon’ etc. which is exciting. Could you provide insight into the range of seafood products that ATP Seafood offers to its customers? Where do these products originate from? We supply Southern Australia Premium Pacific Oyster, which is our ‘crown jewel!’. Where else would you find live oysters in the thank like what we have here? We also have Australian caught Seafood; our seafood is sourced from Australia wide. You know you are getting the best quality. Walk us through a typical day in your life? Our days vairy from sourcing fresh seafood Australia wide daily to also catching our own locally.

This retail store aside, which operated from Thursday to Saturdays weekly, we also operate home deliveries to Gold Coast | Brisbane | Sunshine Coast and Gympie fortnightly. Other activities would include daily products & seafood stock control for quality assurance, oysters shucked daily and fresh fish filleting.

We are motivated to supplying our customers with the highest possible quality seafood

What aspects of working in the seafood industry do you find most fulfilling, and what continues to drive your passion and motivation? We are motivated to supplying our customers with the highest possible quality with all our Seafood products and range. We love communicating with our customers and getting their feedback. It’s the most important cornerstone for us as this helps us understand our audience and what we are doing is matching the needs of the customers. Lastly, what influenced your decision to establish your store in Loganholme, and what do you appreciate most about this location? Well for one, it is a very convenient and strategically well positioned address. We can not only service our local community but suits our distribution model of the business, as we can access highways very quickly. On that note, we had the pleasure of tasting freshly shucked oysters, cold smoked salmon and even gifted a jar of local honey harvested by Bradley! Now it’s your turn to win dozen oysters from ATP Seafood. Head to our fb or insta, find the link to this story to enter & win. Good luck everyone! HOW MOVEMENT ACCELERATES RECOVERY

T

he best medicine in the world doesn’t work if you don’t take it. The same is true of physiotherapy – if you don’t do your exercises regularly, you slow down your recovery. But people are complicated and we don’t always act rationally. A third of kidney transplant patients don’t take their anti-rejection medications. Over 40% of people recovering from a heart attack don’t take their blood pressure meds. And 50-70% of patients with lower back pain don’t do their home-based physiotherapy exercises. At The Brisbane Spine Clinic, we emphasise a joint effort approach to your recovery. The basic concept is that physiotherapy doesn’t work unless you do. Active rehabilitation accelerates your recovery. What is active rehabilitation? When you’ve been sick or injured, you’re often managing a range of feelings. Part of you is probably eager to get back to normal but you may also be managing pain and afraid of making your injury worse. It can be tempting to do nothing but sit still and binge-watch your favourite show while attending a once-a-week physiotherapy session. ‘Rehabilitation’ is the process of returning to

24 | Logan Guide

your normal activities after an illness or injury. And, as the name implies, active rehabilitation means you play an active role in your recovery. You’re not passive, simply lying there while we perform exercises on you – you’re actively involved in performing your exercises each day at home. Of course, we still provide manual therapy in your clinic appointments, relieving tense knots in your muscles, correcting posture or moving your joint through its full range of motion. But the majority of your rehabilitation happens at home. You make a daily practice of setting aside 15 minutes to do your exercises, strengthen your body and accelerate your recovery. Your active rehabilitation program is not a onesize-fits-all approach. It’s carefully designed, taking into account your injury, your medical history and your current physical abilities. It’s also designed to step up as you get stronger and can manage harder exercises that further strengthen your body.

Spinal treatment without the need for surgery The Brisbane Spine Clinic provides top-notch, personalised non-invasive physiotherapy for spinal issues to clients in Brisbane and beyond. Whether you're seeking an alternative to spinal surgery, aiming to enhance athletic performance, or need relief from back or neck pain, we're here to help.

LEFTOVERS GET

NEW LEASE ON LIFE

H

ousehold leftovers could be the answer to generating more renewable energy. A Logan City Council study, run in partnership with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the University of Queensland, will investigate the feasibility of converting food and green organic (FOGO) waste into biomethane gas (a potential energy source), biochar and prill (pelletised fertiliser). The study, announced today, follows the success of Council’s Australian-first biosolids gasification facility, which converts biosolids (sewage sludge) into energy and fertiliser. The innovative technology, in operation at the Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant, was designed and delivered by Council’s water business, Logan Water.

Mayor Darren Power said the FOGO study was another exciting milestone in Council’s sustainability journey. “Logan City Council is already leading the way in cost-effective, sustainable waste disposal, having pioneered the gasification of biosolids in Australia. “With our proven technology already in place, the repurposing of FOGO waste is the next logical step. “We are not afraid to dream big when it comes to providing a cleaner, green future for everyone.” Results from Logan City Council’s FOGO feasibility study will be available in 2024.

Logan Water will lead the trial to enhance the technology to utilise FOGO as an energy source.

Longer term, the results could support Council’s application to the Queensland Government’s recently announced GROW FOGO program.

The gasification facility opened in April 2022. It is significantly reducing Council’s carbon emissions and saving millions of dollars per year in biosolid waste disposal.

The program will help local governments fund the rollout of lime-green lidded ‘organics’ bins and kitchen food waste caddies across South East Queensland.

Treatment of FOGO waste could reduce carbon emissions caused by methane emissions at Council’s landfill sites and provide another important source of bioenergy.

Logan City Council’s FOGO feasibility study is the first of its kind funded under ARENA’s Industrial Energy Transformation Studies program (IETS), which supports pioneering energy projects nationwide.

The study is jointly funded by Council and ARENA, which also co-funded the gasification facility.

T

he exterior of your home is the first thing people notice, and its appearance can significantly impact your property's curb appeal and value. A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into your house, making it look inviting and well-maintained. However, maintaining that freshly painted look can be a challenge, especially when dirt, grime, mold, and mildew build up on the surface. This is where proper soft washing services come into play, as they can extend the life of your home's paint and keep it looking pristine for years to come. How Soft Washing Extends the Life of Paint: Eliminates Mold and Mildew: Mold and mildew growth not only look unsightly but can also cause significant damage to your paint. Soft washing can eradicate these unwelcome guests, preventing them from eating away at your paint's protective layers. Prevents Chipping and Peeling: Soft washing preserves the integrity of the paint by eliminating destructive elements that can lead to chipping and peeling. This means your paint will last longer, saving you money on premature repainting.

LOGANHOLME'S FIRST TEACHER

I

n celebration of World Teacher's Day last month, let's take a journey back in time to discover the story of Loganholme's very first teacher, David Freeman. Arriving in Brisbane on May 3, 1873, Freeman wasted no time in embarking on his educational mission. Freeman was no ordinary educator. His journey into the teaching profession began at the tender age of thirteen when he became a pupil-teacher in Henley-on-Thames, England. This was followed by two and a quarter years at Oxford Diocesan College. His dedication to the craft led him to teach for fifteen years at various schools in southern England, including a notable stint in Cornwall. No wonder his credentials caught the eye of Queensland's Agent-General, who recruited him from across the seas. What set Freeman apart from the rest was his proficiency in music, a highly desirable skill at that time. This flexibility underscored the varied roles teachers were expected to play in the burgeoning Queensland education system.

However, teaching in the late 19th century meant more than just imparting academic knowledge. It involved moulding students into well-rounded individuals. Teachers were entrusted with inculcating virtues such as punctuality, regularity, cleanliness, and orderly behaviour, while also refining manners, language, and demeanour. Freeman's initial impact in Loganholme was indeed noteworthy. Both the local school board and District Inspector of Schools, J.G. Anderson, lauded his capacity and industry as a teacher. The fact that Anderson, a discerning figure in education, held Freeman in high regard speaks volumes about his abilities. He went on to serve as Head Teacher at various Queensland schools, including Bulimba, Coomera Lower, Springsure, and Gympie Goldfields. His career spanned over three decades, with his salary steadily increasing from £130 to £200 per annum.

The changing of the guard at Loganholme School saw a succession of teachers, each with their unique qualities and challenges. At a time when Queensland grappled with a severe teacher shortage, Loganholme bore witness to a wide range of teaching competencies. David Freeman's legacy endures as Loganholme's first teacher, leaving an indelible mark on the local education system and the early history of the region. His story sheds light on the trials and triumphs of Queensland's educational evolution and the dedication of teachers in a bygone era. The Establishment of Loganholme Primary School Before David Freeman's arrival, the foundations of education in Loganholme were being laid. In 1871, the Loganholme community raised £30 through subscriptions to establish a school. Their vision was for a practical and affordable building, devoid of extravagant ornamentation. The Board advised them to raise at least £60 to secure such a building, which would, in turn, attract a superior class of teacher. The school's construction by John L. Sands was completed in 1873, marking the foundation of Loganholme Primary School. The original Loganholme school building served the community for more than a century before being replaced by a modern school. In 2009, it was moved to the Beenleigh Historical Village, where it stands as a symbol of the region's educational history.

n Loganholme, just off the service road near the familiar Syd's Pie shop, stands Ironbark Fitness - a local gym run by a dynamic duo who are redefining what it means to be a fitness hub. Jo Higgins and her co-founder, Alex, began their journey as personal trainers at Goodlife Beenleigh. Dreaming big, the duo often entertained the idea of owning a gym, but the concept took real shape when the 2020 lockdowns hit. "We started with just training

clients however we could within the guidelines," Higgins recalls. As the guidelines evolved, so did their innovative approach. "Alex and I came up with the idea of her having 9 of her clients at one end of a park and I have 9 of my clients at another end, and halfway through the session, we swap," she said, detailing the birth of their 'Blended Bootcamp' business. The success of their outdoor bootcamps made it evident that they had outgrown the park's confines. "We ended up running that for 12 months but got so big that we realised we needed our own facility," Higgins noted. Thus, Ironbark Fitness was born. The gym began its journey with nearly 50 members and has seen steady growth. "We now sit just under 90 members and still want to grow and help more people," Higgins proudly shares.

The duo's vision for Ironbark Fitness is clear - a safe space for everyone. "We have created a safe space for people of all ages and abilities to come and exercise, feel included and seen, have their personal goals valued, and have fun along the way," she said. Ironbark's Top Features: What sets Ironbark Fitness apart from other fitness facilities is its personal touch. Both Jo and Alex have an impressive 13-year tenure in personal training, and it shows. “We run them like a PT session. Every member is closely monitored, corrected, modified if they have an injury," Higgins emphasises. Central to Ironbark Fitness’s ethos is the value they place on every member. From knowing each person's name to understanding their unique goals and challenges. “Whether it's discussing nutrition or checking in on a member who hasn't attended in a while, we make sure everyone feels seen and supported," says Jo and Alex. Jo's fitness journey began at 13, following a chapter with Wide Bay Representative gymnastics, and has since evolved into competitive bodybuilding. Meanwhile, Alex transitioned from her days as a semiprofessional ballerina to the demanding world of Ultra Trail races. Together they emphasise “We 100% walk the talk and practise what we believe in. elivering essential infrastructure, maintaining high levels of customer service and boosting the City of Logan’s environmental credentials are among the achievements highlighted in Logan City Council’s 2022/23 Annual Report, which was adopted today. Mayor Darren Power said the achievements were worth celebrating, especially during a tough economic climate and the ongoing recovery from the 2022 floods. “I’m proud of the Council team that continues to deliver quality services and programs to the Logan community each and every day,” Councillor Power said. “The high points from the past year are many and varied. “As Mayor, I’m excited that we secured a major sporting venue as part of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games funding deal, and that our ongoing advocacy efforts helped stop Inland Rail coming through our city.

“We also became only the second Council in Queensland to be certified carbon neutral and further progressed our new Logan Plan 2025 to ensure future growth is well-managed.” The document reports on Council’s progress in delivering the 73 projects included in its Operational Plan at the start of the 2022/23 financial year as well as its financial position. The organisation completed 67 of the planned projects (92%) and achieved an operating surplus of $14.3 million. Council also gave a greater focus on value for money to maximise resources and implemented an organisational restructure to better align services and prepare for an unpredictable future. “I’d like to thank my fellow Councillors for their hard work over the year and ongoing commitment to the City of Logan as well as CEO Darren Scott, the Executive Leadership Team and our 1800 staff for the outstanding work they continue to deliver to our community,” Cr Power said. The Annual Report and financial statements will be published on Council’s website in coming weeks.

KIDS TO UNCOVER CAREER PATHWAYS New pilot program prepares teens for take-off

A

Logan City Council program designed to launch the career ambitions of young learners is underway.

Catapult Connects is a new initiative of Council’s successful Catapult youth entrepreneur program, which links high school students with local business and industry mentors. More than 20 year 9 students from both Yarrabilba State Secondary College and Woodridge State High School, are taking part in the program this term. The students will work closely with local business representatives to consider and solve industry-based challenges. They will also participate in mock interviews and resume writing workshops, and visit the businesses to experience workplace operations firsthand. The new program, funded by Logan City Council, will be facilitated by Shailer Park charity, Kingdom Community Life Care.

Economic Development Chair Councillor Jon Raven said Catapult Connects would help young high school students start planning their career pathways. “This program will connect young people to careers they may not even know exist,” Cr Raven said. “These teenagers are the future of our city, we want them to hit the ground running when they leave school.” The Yarrabilba students will work with representatives from developer Lendlease, while Woodridge students will work with staff from the Hyperdome Shopping Centre. Council’s Catapult program, launched in 2020, has now expanded to 12 schools across the City of Logan. More than 2400 students and 100 teachers benefitted from Catapult initiatives in the 2022/23 financial year.

Taisha text your friends but you found out that you had forgotten your phone. If you had had a robot, you could easily have told the robot to connect to your phone and take free selfies. That way, you would never have to worry about forgetting your phone. Secondly, Robots can help you with tasks you don’t like. Tired of tedious recurring household chores? Take control of your daily tasks and spend more time on the things that make you smile by letting a robot do them for you. What can it do? Almost everything! From waking you up in the morning and nagging your kids to do their homework, to cleaning your home while you’re at work. Also, a robot would definitely be happy to help with lawn maintenance and snow cleaning tasks. Thirdly and most importantly is safety. A home robot can keep your home safe and secure. Smart devices can connect with each other but what about a hub for all that? A robot can be the control centre for everything from your coffee machine to your Nest cams, thermostats and even locking doors. And you can access it from anywhere in the world too! Your eyes in the home 24/7 to keep everyone and everything safe and secure. In conclusion, I strongly believe that robots should be mandatory because it is very safe, they can help you with the tasks you don’t like and they can help you worry less. So, when you have time to go shopping, always remember to go into the robotics shop first.

But as soon as Crow began singing, the cheese dropped out of his mouth. Immediately, Fox raced over, grabbed the delicious chunk and dashed off into the forest to feast on it. Enraged that he had been tricked, Crow swooped down and flew after Fox. “I will never listen to you again!” shrieked Crow flapping furiously overhead. After devouring his tasty snack, Fox realized he was still hungry but he knew he could not trick Crow to sing again. So, he quietly but confidently thought of his next plan. “Crow might not sing my favourite song again,” thought Fox, “but instead he can be in the song. I will roll up into a ball amongst these red autumn leaves and hold above me this enormous, yellow leaf I have found and Crow will think it is another piece of cheese.” Cleverly, Fox carried out his plan – he curled up, hiding himself under the red leaves. Then he carefully placed the huge yellow leaf above him, and waited patiently for Crow.

Relja Jawful Feast By Relja Jovanovic

Throughout the colourful, autumn-leafed forest all the birds could hear the loud rumble which came from Crow’s belly since he was so hungry. Flying amongst the trees and searching for food, Crow noticed something yellow on the ground – a delicious chunk of cheese! Crow swooped down as fast as he could and snapped up the tasty meal then flew back up into an orange and red maple tree to munch happily on it for lunch. Quietly, out of nowhere, Fox appeared under the tree looking up at Crow and the tasty snack wedged in her beak.

Meanwhile, Crow had been searching for food in the forest for hours but he had found nothing and was still very hungry. Suddenly, he spotted the large yellow leaf. Thinking it was another piece of delicious cheese, Crow swooped down to grab the tasty morsel. But as soon as he got close, Fox leapt up, opened his monstrous mouth full of sharp teeth, and gobbled up Crow. “Baby Shark do do do do do do…” sang Fox as he walked happily to his den to rest… and plan his next tasty meal. To be continued…

“Could you sing the ‘Baby Shark’ song?” Fox pleaded in his kindest voice. “Of course!” Crow replied pridefully trying not to drop the cheese. Logan Guide Guide || 53 53 Logan

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO HELP YOU

BUILD A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

I

f your main goal is to improve your lifestyle and focus on the brilliant basics, then building better habits and forming a routine you can stick to need to be at the forefront of your mind. In this blog we will provide some tips and tricks to help you take the steps towards a healthier version of you

3.

HABIT HACKS Habit creation is an incredibly powerful tool for transforming your behaviours and achieving long-term lifestyle goals. Step one is to identify your goals, step two is to break down your goals into more manageable actions. The most important step is always step three EXECUTION.

When starting your journey towards a goal, it is quite common to put your entire focus on it. While this added intensity and ‘all in’ mindset can create short-term bursts of progress, it can also lead to burnout or demotivation if sustained over a prolonged period. At Fitstop, we believe in teaching long-term, sustainable habits so that you can stay healthy for life. That’s why consistency is important, as it focuses on the regular and sustainable execution of a habit. Initially, it will require some discipline, however over-time the new habits will be ingrained in your routine, supporting significant progress and sustainable long-term results.

Repeating a behaviour over time helps solidify a new habit, so it’s important to stay consistent and have patience throughout your journey. Some things that can help you stay consistent are: 1.

Only focusing on ONE new habit at a time.

2.

Stacking your new habit with an already existing one (e.g. If you always have a morning coffee, add drinking 1L of water before you have your coffee to instil the new habit)

Ensure you celebrate the wins along the way - each week you stick to your habit is an opportunity to celebrate!

CONSISTENCY VS INTENSITY Consistency is key. We have heard it all before, but why is it so important?

BRIDGE WIDENING UNDERWAY Breaking ground on Slacks Creek bridge upgrade

T

he transformation of a major City of Logan thoroughfare is continuing above and below the ground.

Steel ‘liners’ will be driven into the ground to the full depth of the piles, before the earth is drilled out from inside each liner.

Logan City Council has begun widening the Ray Hodgson Bridge on Loganlea Rd at Slacks Creek as part of a $77.7 million upgrade of the stretch from Meadowbrook to the M1.

The steel reinforced piles will then be poured into the excavated holes. The new 70m long bridge deck will be built over the top in mid2024.

Over the next four weeks, eight ‘piles’ will be poured up to 7 metres into the bedrock under Slacks Creek.

Infrastructure Chair, Councillor Teresa Lane, said bridge building is complex work but the disruption to traffic, residents and businesses would be minimal.

They will carry the weight of an additional northbound traffic lane, footpath and bikeway.

“The benefits will be huge. The city will undergo some tremendous growth in coming years, and it’s crucial we have a roads network to cope, and get drivers home quicker and safer,” Cr Lane said.

Division 3 Councillor Mindy Russell said the bikeway and footpath would be well used. “This work is unlocking Logan’s potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing the extra pedestrian and bike riding opportunities it will also open up,” Cr Russell said. Division 6 Councillor Tony Hall said the wider bridge over Slacks Creek would save time on residents’ commutes. “This is a vital part of the upgrade to for a safer, faster link from Meadowbrook to the M1,” Cr Hall said. Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King said the work would have an impact on the city’s residents. “The Australian Government is proud to be jointly funding this vital bridge-widening project

for Logan, delivering on our election commitments and making a real difference for the community,” Minister King said. “Projects like this ensure our road networks support residents to get home safely from each trip while keeping freight connected to our cities and regions.” The bridge is named after former Logan Mayor Ray Hodgson who served the city from 1990 to 1991. Council is spending $55.2 million on the Loganlea Rd upgrade. The project is receiving $22.5 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Infrastructure Investment Program. Treasurer and Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers was pleased to see the project come to fruition. “This is a great example of how we’re working with the council to make Logan City an even better place to be,” he said. “I use this road regularly so I know how important it is for the local university, TAFE and shops which is why I’m so keen to play a part in delivering this upgrade. “We’re upgrading Loganlea Rd to get people home quicker and safer and to ease congestion but also to cater for growth in our community. “Projects like this one are important for local jobs and the local economy but also for future proofing Logan City – ensuring we continue to create more jobs and more opportunities for more people in our community.”
