BIG GUN BUTCHERY

You may wonder why the big gun points skyward over the RSPCA shop and op shop, and not over the Big Gun Butchery, which has a big cow in the air above it. The RSPCA place is the site of the original Big Gun Butchery; a wrecking yard was where the butchery is located these days.

The butchery’s original owner was Bill Pattemore, who began the shop with two sons who also worked there. One son later opened a shop in Alexandra Hills but sold it last year. The other, Dwayne, decided he didn’t want to be a butcher all his life, did further study, worked for Woolworths for 25 years and eventually became the store manager of the one at Springwood Mall. He died of cancer last year.

Bill Pattemore sold the shop in about 1994 to Gary Winch, who only owned it for about a year. The next owner was Winton Patten, who sold fruit and vegetables as well as meat. His son, Brad, built the current shop in 1999 or 2000 and the old butchery was closed. The current shop

was eventually faced with bricks; originally it didn’t look like it does now. Brad left in 2014. (The old site has had a few incarnations – an enormous greengrocery, a place where half the shop was devoted to fruit and vegetables, the other half devoted to Chinese urns, a small greengrocery where half the shop was closed off, and now, the RSPCA precinct.)

Currently, the butchery’s owner is Scott McKenzie, with Laurie Lucas as manager. A barrister has owned the building since it was erected.

NAIDOC WEEK 2023

The history, culture and achievements of the City of Logan’s First Nations residents will be celebrated next month.

The Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day will run from 9am to 2.30pm on Tuesday, July 4 at the Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) Cultural Precinct.

The day, hosted by the Logan District Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders, will feature a Welcome to Country and smoking and flag-raising ceremonies.

It will mark NAIDOC Week which runs from Sunday, July 2 until Sunday, July 9.

Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall said the community would come together through the Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day to recognise and celebrate the City of Logan’s rich Indigenous heritage.

“I encourage people to join in and experience all the great activities on offer such as yarning circles with the elders and didgeridoo-making workshops,” Cr Hall said.

“This year’s event is focused on the city’s elders as across every generation they play an important role in our community as cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, advocates, teachers and leaders.”

A key element of the Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day is a free live entertainment program featuring traditional and modern performances on the KBF stage.

The program also features information stalls, a free barbecue lunch, activities for children, traditional foods for sale, a damper-making competition and a traditional weaving session.

A free bus pick-up and drop-off service will operate from Slacks Creek Park’n’Ride, the Logan Central Kmart bus stop and Logan City Council across from the Logan City Special School.

WHAT'S YOUR PARENTING STYLE?

We're breaking down different types of parenting styles. Which one do you practice?

Parenting is an exhilarating journey filled with boundless joy, unique challenges, and a multitude of decisions to make. From the moment we cradle our little ones in our arms, we embark on a quest to determine the best way to raise them. The concept of parenting styles and approaches becomes instrumental in navigating this intricate path and finding a method that resonates with both parent and child.

The initial step on this remarkable expedition involves familiarising ourselves with the diverse parenting styles that exist. One prevalent approach is authoritative parenting, characterised by a harmonious blend of

structure and warmth. It encompasses setting clear boundaries while fostering an environment that encourages individuality. Within this style, children learn the values of responsibility and independence, guided by nurturing parental support.

In contrast, permissive parenting takes a more relaxed stance, emphasising a high level of warmth and acceptance. Parents subscribing to this approach tend to be lenient with rules and boundaries, prioritising their child's happiness. While this approach creates a loving environment, it is crucial to strike a balance, ensuring children do not develop an unhealthy sense of entitlement.

Lastly, uninvolved parenting represents a style characterised by low levels of both warmth and control. Parents following this approach tend to be emotionally distant and disengaged, often neglecting their child's needs. It is vital to recognise that this parenting style is generally considered detrimental to a child's well-being and overall development.

Another style is authoritarian parenting, which places a strong emphasis on discipline and adherence to rules. Parents who adopt this approach believe in unwavering obedience. While structure and discipline are pivotal, an excessively authoritarian style may impede a child's ability to develop problem-solving skills and independence.

However, it is important to note that parenting styles are not fixed categories, and most parents tend to incorporate a blend of different approaches. This unique amalgamation creates a personalised parenting style that aligns with their child's specific needs and their own core values. The beauty of finding what works lies in the ability to embrace flexibility and adapt the parenting style as the child grows and develops.

As we embark on this transformative journey, it is imperative to observe our child's individuality, temperament, and strengths. Some children flourish within a more structured environment, while others thrive in an atmosphere that fosters exploration and creativity.

It is important to remember that perfection is not the goal of parenting. Mistakes are inevitable, and they provide invaluable learning opportunities for both parent and child. Seeking support from other parents, engaging in parenting communities, and sharing experiences can broaden our horizons and enhance our parenting skills.

So, dear parents, as we navigate the unpredictable landscape of parenthood, let us cherish this transformative adventure. Discover your own parenting style, relish the precious moments that define this extraordinary journey, and remember that you have the power to shape your child's future.

DOES YOUR DOG HAVE SEPARATION ANXIETY?

Does your dog exhibit signs of distress when you leave the house? Barking, destructive behaviour, or attempts to escape? These behaviours may be indicators of separation anxiety, a common condition that affects many dogs. Understanding and managing your furry friend's distress is important, so let's explore the causes of separation anxiety and provide strategies to alleviate their anxiety.

Separation anxiety occurs when dogs become excessively attached to their owners, leading to heightened stress levels when left alone. This condition is often observed in dogs that have been rehomed or have experienced life in a shelter, where they may have gone through periods of instability or abandonment. Older dogs may also exhibit anxiety due to underlying

medical issues, so it's essential to schedule a veterinary check-up to rule out any potential health concerns.

Managing separation anxiety requires a multi-faceted approach. Behaviour modification, exercise, training, and the use of calming remedies can be effective strategies. Behaviour modification techniques involve gradually acclimatising your dog to being alone by practising short departures and rewarding calm behaviour. This helps them build confidence and reduces anxiety over time. Exercise plays a crucial role in managing separation anxiety as it helps to tire out your dog, making them less likely to engage in destructive behaviours or experience heightened anxiety. Regular training sessions can also provide mental stimulation and reinforce positive behaviours, giving your dog a sense of structure and security.

Calming remedies such as nutritional supplements, and herbal remedies can be used in conjunction with behaviour modification techniques to alleviate anxiety. However, it's important to consult with your veterinarian before introducing any supplements or remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your dog's specific needs.

Recognising signs of stress when you are away is crucial in managing separation anxiety. Your dog may constantly seek your presence and exhibit excessive excitement upon your return. Common indicators of anxiety during your departure routine include panting, crying, shaking, or pacing. Understanding these signs can help you tailor your approach and provide the necessary support.

It's worth noting that over-dependence on humans is a result of years of domestication. Treating dogs as our children can foster their dependence on us, hindering their natural development of independence. While it's important to provide love and care for our dogs, encouraging their independence through training and gradually increasing their alone time can be beneficial.

Finding a solution to separation anxiety takes time and effort. Consulting with your veterinarian is the first step to rule out any underlying health issues and obtain professional guidance. They may recommend working with a specialist animal behaviourist who can develop a personalised plan based on your dog's specific needs.

Creating a safe and comfortable environment is vital in managing separation anxiety. Auditory stimulation, such as leaving talkback radio or classical music on at a low volume, can help soothe your dog. Providing a positive distraction, such as a treat-releasing toy or puzzle, can occupy your dog's time and help them associate positive experiences with being alone.

Remember that managing separation anxiety requires patience and a tailored approach. Seek professional help when needed, and understand that building a harmonious relationship with your dog is worth the investment of time and effort. With consistent training, gradual exposure to alone time, and a supportive environment, you can help your furry friend feel more secure and confident when you're away.

A BEACON OF

WHEN WE MET TINA

Tina, a proud owner of Hello World Travel Rochedale has been serving the local community well before we started publishing this magazine, two and a half years ago.

I can vividly recall her infectious and welcoming smile when I walked into her business looking for potential local business to advertise in our 2nd issue of the Logan City Guide.

At that time, I was curious to know how and why she managed to keep her business open amidst the challenging circumstances. Moreover, I wondered how she could afford to maintain such a radiant smile.

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded and countries started closing their borders one after another during the initial months, the impact on travel businesses was immediate and severe. Holidays abroad became untenable, and the travel industry was one of the hardest-hit sectors.

PARTNERS IN ADVERSITY

As much as I wanted to help at the time of our first meeting, we needed local businesses to advertise in our magazine to make our business float. The timing of starting a publication in many eyes, weren’t desirable but I was certain that businesses could not only survive but thrive in difficult circumstances. And Tina understood that! Tina coming on board gave us a glimpse of a brighter future ahead.

Tina has always been optimistic, even in the midst of uncertainty. She expressed her belief that while the industry would face short-term challenges and long-term systemic changes, there would also be opportunities. "The travel industry is resilient, and the demand for leisure travel is always there – perhaps even more so after this?!?," she remarked.

The ultimate proof of success is that Tina is a business woman who has continued trading throughout the pandemic, and as restrictions ease, her business is seeing strong demand from customers to travel internationally once more. Not that Tina assumes it’s back to business as usual, but she knows the travel industry is a very resilient one, indeed as she is, used to dealing with ups and downs, travel advice changes, natural disasters….

A NIGHT WITH THE STARS

At the time of writing this editorial, Tina and her business have been nominated for 'The 2023 Logan Business Distinction Awards,' which will take place on August 11th at the Logan Entertainment Centre. We extend our best wishes to her for this nomination and hope to witness her truly shine. She is not only writing her own business success story but also playing a role in shaping ours.

RIDING BEYOND BOUNDARIES

How 'incredible' horses and volunteers help people with disabilities develop skills and confidence for life!

The kids who come to ride horses here may never have liked sport. Perhaps they are more used to clinging to their carers rather than venturing out.

But when I visited the Crowson Park RDA, the local Riding for the Disabled facility at Greenbank Logan, you can see the kids with disabilities blossom. I have no idea how it works, but for some reason it's just brought kids to life. I am unsure what these kids are like with other sports, but what I witness is that :

Now, the volunteer organisation has 17 centres in Queensland and dozens more nationally.

Horse and rider

At Crowson Park, the centre has well divided riding areas; the main arena, bushland & tracks with five horses and many volunteers putting their time into helping people with disabilities grow through riding lessons each week.

On the morning I visited the centre, there were about 10 regular riders at the Crowson Park Riding for the Disabled, supported by three experienced coaches, patient horses, and dozens of volunteers.

It is found that, when we sit on a horse, and a horse walks underneath us, it creates in our pelvis and our torso exactly the same movement as when we walk on our own two feet, so for riders who find walking very difficult, impossible or really tiring, horse riding can recreate that walking experience.

And for riders who struggle with communication issues, the horses are never pushing for an answer, so they can take as much time as they

THE HIGH PRICE OF LOW PRICING:

WHY GOING CHEAP CAN HURT YOUR SMALL

In today's competitive market, small businesses often consider adopting a cheap, low-cost strategy to attract customers and gain a foothold in the industry. However, relying solely on low pricing can have detrimental effects on your business. The importance of branding impressions, product value, and pricing margins for long-term profitability.

The more you focus on the value of your product or service, the less important the price becomes.

Building Branding Impressions: Focusing solely on offering the lowest price can dilute your brand image, making you appear as a low-quality, discount provider. Investing in a strong brand identity establishes credibility, trust, and loyalty among your target audience. Prioritising branding impressions helps differentiate your business, attract quality customers, and justify higher prices.

Product Value: Price is important, but it is not the sole determining factor for customers. By solely competing on price, you risk neglecting the unique value your products or services offer. Emphasise the benefits and selling points that set your offerings apart from cheaper alternatives. Highlight product quality, durability, convenience, and any added value that justifies a higher price point. Consider the real value your product or service provides to the customer.

Pricing Margin and Profitability: While cutting prices may increase sales volume initially, it can have adverse effects on your bottom line. Low-profit margins make it difficult to sustain and grow your business in the long run. Ensure your pricing strategy includes adequate margins to cover operational costs,

invest in marketing efforts, and generate sustainable revenue. Analyse your cost structure, value proposition, and target market to set competitive yet profitable pricing strategies.

Perceived Quality and Customer

Perception: The price of a product or service often influences customers' perception of its quality. Setting significantly lower prices than competitors may raise doubts about the value and reliability of your offerings. By strategically pricing your products or services, you can convey a sense of quality, expertise, and value. This approach attracts customers who are willing to pay for a superior experience.

While low pricing may initially attract customers, small businesses must recognise the potential drawbacks. Relying solely on cheap pricing undervalues your brand, products, and services, risking long-term profitability. Instead, focus on building a strong brand, emphasising product value, and setting appropriate pricing margins. Find a balance between attracting customers and maintaining a sustainable business model. By doing so, your small business can thrive in a competitive marketplace, offering quality products or services that customers are willing to pay a fair price for.

Need a discussion about your price pick up the phone and talk to Helen.

W E E K E ND Getaways Stanthorpe

Stanthorpe, a charming rural town nestled in the Southern Downs region, lies approximately two and a half hours away from Logan. Much like its neighbouring areas in Southern Queensland, Stanthorpe thrives with wineries, breweries, and an abundance of fresh farm produce, boasting delightful treats such as fresh truffles and delectable cheese. Located 800m above sea level, Stanthorpe is one of the coldest towns in Queensland, making it the perfect climate for vineyards.

Moreover, the area is home to over 50 vineyards scattered throughout its picturesque landscape. Visitors can cherry-pick their preferred wineries to explore or embark

on a self-guided bicycle tour to immerse themselves in the experience.

On the outskirts of town, Girraween National Park and Bald Rock National Park beckon adventurers with their captivating allure. These natural treasures offer an array of trails, allowing visitors to traverse the stunning hillside landscapes adorned with granite outcrops, whether opting for a brief stroll or an extended hike.

With the added allure of charming lodges, picnic lunches, and the opportunity for glamorous camping beneath the starlit sky, Stanthorpe presents an impeccable haven for those seeking a romantic retreat away from the bustle of Brisbane. It's worth spending a few days around Stanthorpe to really enjoy all that the Granite Belt has to offer.

Truffle Discovery Centre

Stanthorpe is home to the rare French Black Perigord Truffle, fungi which is so precious some joke they need their own bodyguards to protect them. At the Truffle Discovery Centre, you can take a guided tour of the truffière and enjoy food tastings. With a gift store you’ll definitely want to visit on the way out, stock up on supplies of truffle oil and truffle honey that beg to be drizzled over the cheese.

Stanthorpe Cheese

Stanthorpe Cheese factory is another worthy visit. Who doesn’t love cheese to compliment a platter and a beverage any day of the week? The cheeses here are made to traditional recipes that taste like real cheese straight from the farm! In the tasting room, you can sample a wide range of cheeses as well as chilli sauce, relishes, chutneys, balsamic vinegar and more. When you’ve found what you like, stock up for later and make yourself an incredible afternoon picnic accompanied by local wine.

GAMES PLAN SETS UP CITY FOR SUCCESS

Logan leads the way with Olympic legacy vision

The City of Logan has doubled down on a bold bid to become a South East Queensland destination of choice.

Logan City Council’s 2023-2028 Destination Management Plan, adopted today, charts a new course for the city as a leader in sustainable nature-based encounters, sporting and cultural events and entertainment experiences.

The plan will work in tandem with Council’s 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap – an exciting new vision to capitalise on economic, cultural and social development opportunities ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and beyond.

The ‘Roadmap’ – also adopted today – will guide the planning of the recently announced indoor sporting venue in Logan Central, as Council and the Queensland Government develop a business case for the multi-purpose facility.

It will also underpin future Council actions to advocate for vital transport and community infrastructure across the

city, with improvements to supporting telecommunications systems and upgrades to the nearby Woodridge train station high on Council’s agenda.

Mayor Darren Power said the City of Logan was already a key logistics and workforce hub between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It is also home to 234 different cultures.

“Our diverse city has enormous natural and cultural advantages as a commercial, tourism and culinary destination and this profile is certain to grow as the Olympic and Paralympic Games approach,” Cr Power said.

“With so many different cultures already calling our city home, Logan will be a ‘must-do’ destination for the many visitors we can expect in the lead up to, and during the Games.”

Key actions within Council’s 2023-2028

Destination Management Plan include:

• Encouraging the development of more high-quality, short-term accommodation

Expanding the city’s night-time economy, and enhancing the offerings of key food and cultural tourism precincts

• Backing local business to support the growth of an active and engaged, tradeready industry

• Delivering and opening the new Riverine Discovery Centre at Eagleby (slated for completion in mid-2024)

The plan will also work to increase visitor spend and stay within the City of Logan and develop a calendar of destination-based events to increase visitor demand.

Economic Development Chair Councillor Jon Raven said small steps taken now were critical to delivering long-term, city-wide benefits for residents and businesses.

“The next decade and beyond is our once-ina-generation opportunity to drive and deliver the infrastructure, employment and lifestyle opportunities that will help our city thrive,” Cr Raven said.

“Reaching those goals off the back of the Olympics and Paralympics will require bold decisions by this and future Councils, but the benefits for City of Logan families and businesses will be enormous.”

The community will be invited to have their say on Council’s 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap in coming months.

Details will be available soon on Council’s Have Your Say website: haveyoursaylogan.com.au

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF MINIATURE HORSES

We love our therapy dogs and emotional support animals. Some of you might have one (or multiple)! Using animals to help us, both emotionally and physically, is nothing new. Using horses in therapy is not a new concept either. And it’s been gaining popularity in recent years.

Let’s start with a very brief history…

In Ancient Greece, horses were used to treat people with emotional and psychological problems. They also used horses to help those with physical disabilities and injuries.

The Healing Power of Miniature Horses:

Mindfulness and Meditation: Miniature horses create a serene and peaceful environment, enabling individuals to practise mindfulness and meditation. Their gentle presence encourages focus on the present moment, enhancing selfawareness and emotional regulation.

Emotional Connection: Miniature horses possess an innate ability to establish emotional bonds with humans. Interacting with these gentle creatures promotes feelings of trust,

empathy, and companionship, contributing to emotional healing and personal growth.

Non-Verbal Communication: Horses communicate primarily through non-verbal cues, heightening individuals' awareness of their own non-verbal expressions and emotions. This increased sensitivity fosters improved self-regulation and social interactions.

Sensory Engagement: Engaging with miniature horses involves various senses, such as touch, sight, and hearing. These sensory experiences deepen the therapeutic process, establishing a stronger mind-body connection and grounding individuals in the present moment.

Self-Reflection and Growth: Working with miniature horses provides opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. Activities like problem-solving, leading, or caring for the horses nurture resilience, assertiveness, and a sense of accomplishment.

with Pressure Cleaning and Soft Wash Services

Maintaining the value of your property is crucial, and pressure cleaning and soft wash services can help achieve that. Over time, exterior surfaces gather dirt, grime, mould, and other contaminants that not only reduce the appeal but also degrade the property's worth. Pressure cleaning and soft wash offer effective solutions to revitalise the exterior and enhance its overall value.

Boost Property Value

First impressions matter, especially when it comes to real estate. Potential buyers or visitors often judge a property by its exterior appearance. By investing in professional pressure cleaning and soft wash services, you can significantly increase the value of your property. A clean and well-maintained exterior creates an inviting atmosphere, exuding a sense of pride and care. Whether you plan to sell your property in the future or simply want to enjoy a fresh and appealing living space, pressure cleaning and soft wash services are a smart investment that yields long-term benefits.

Prevent Costly Repairs

Neglected exterior surfaces can lead to more significant problems over time. For instance, mould and mildew growth can weaken the structure of your property and cause health hazards. Additionally, dirt and debris buildup on decks, patios, and driveways can deteriorate the surface materials, resulting in cracks, discolouration, and overall deterioration. By regularly scheduling pressure cleaning and soft wash services, you can prevent the need for costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your property's exterior.

Clever ideas to combat rising costs

Innovation in roads maintenance is one of the cornerstones of Logan City Council’s 2023/24 Budget.

The budget includes a $265 million spend on roads, drainage and engineering services, including $121 million in upgrades across the 2400km road network.

Ongoing and proposed works have been significantly impacted by the soaring cost of bitumen, concrete, steel and other road construction materials.

Mayor Darren Power said Council was committed to exploring new and more efficient practices to offset these rising costs and deliver as many kilometres of new and upgraded roads as possible for the funding allocated.

“The prices of concrete, steel and bitumen have soared up to 30 per cent in the last year and

there have also been increases in fuel, skill shortages and supply chain issues,” Councillor Power said.

“To address this, we have worked with some of the best and brightest engineers to deliver solutions.”

This includes trialling innovative ways to monitor and repair roads with high-tech cameras and artificial intelligence-based computer programs.

“This technology is being harnessed to map hundreds of kilometres of the city’s roads so minor repairs can be done before they become major projects,” Cr Power said.

Council’s road crews have also trialled a specially equipped truck, known as a Jet Patcher, which allows for faster, safer and more efficient repair of potholes.

Since January last year, more than 30,000 potholes have been repaired across the city and works will continue as needed.

To further offset rising costs, and to allow roads and drainage projects to continue as scheduled, Council has bought a year’s supply of concrete pipes, and used recycled crushed concrete and alternative bitumen combinations.

Council’s $1.089 billion Budget will boost the delivery of essential services to the community while also upgrading existing facilities and constructing new ones.

Key projects and funding allocations include:

the continuation of the Mayor’s Local Job and Skills Taskforce which has already delivered more than 300 local employment opportunities to jobseekers of all ages.

funding to build on the 53 general community spaces and 17 community centres already provided by Council, including money to start construction of the Wilbur St youth centre in Logan Central.

$63 million for the management and maintenance of the city’s 962 parks and reserves over the next 12 months, including $13.4 million for capital works.

Improving the Logan and Albert Rivers through a deep clean to remove larger items washed into local waterways during last year’s floods.

the expansion and upgrade of the citywide safety camera network, which is already one of the largest in Australia.

the installation of more solar panels on Council buildings and facilities to help reduce soaring electricity bills.

investing in more solar-powered speed advisory signs and safe parking campaigns, particularly around schools.

a standalone rapid response crew to target illegal dumping of abandoned and burnt-out vehicles, unlawful signage and shopping trolleys.

You're in a chatty mood and enjoy making contact with a wide range of people (but then, you usually are). It's a great opportunity to improve your relationship with a colleague, customer, or boss, simply by talking to them about whatever seems appropriate at the time. Lucky numbers are 33 and 66.

You're at your most dazzling and engaging right now, and your sparkling personality will attract plenty of admirers. You have a strong need to express yourself and prove that you're an individual in your own right. You don't want to be neatly filed away in a pigeonhole, and instead you want people to recognise that you're a unique human being.

The issues you're now dealing with won't always be on your mind. Eventually, they'll fade into distant memories. Even though life always brings challenges to deal with, in the nottoo-distant future your concerns will be less time-consuming. You're just re-examining things that need to be re-examined.

Maybe it's a reaction to the gloom of the past couple of days, but you're feeling restless and easily bored. Ideally, you should abandon at least part of your usual routine and do something radically different instead. Not only will this make you feel more lively, it will also bring you into contact with fresh ideas and new developments.

Put zest and energy into the day's activities, especially if they involve rushing around from one place to another, or keeping up with your partner. Enjoy being busy and productive; you'll be amazed at how much you manage to get done. In fact, whenever the pace slackens you'll start to feel restless and bored, wondering what you can do next. Lucky numbers are 9 and 17.

If you're concerned about the state of your finances, work hard to make them as healthy as possible. However, guard against your tendency to place too much emphasis on the material side of life, telling yourself that what you own is more important than who you are. This is your time, so be ready for luck from unexpected places.

Gather some of your nearest and dearest around you today, because it will do you good to spend time with them. Cook them a meal or just have a chat over a cuppa. You're in a reflective mood and your thoughts will soon wander to the past. You might even be tempted to get out some old mementos.

A certain person needs plenty of love and affection today otherwise they'll find other ways to get themselves noticed. This won't be very serious or problematic, but it might waste valuable time that you would rather have spent on other things. It could also make you feel rather guilty that you didn't give them what they wanted in the first place. Lucky numbers are 22 and 7.

This is a terrific day for embarking on a new routine or for altering your work schedule because the changes will inspire and excite you. If you're beginning a new job today, it's likely to bring you a few surprises along the way but it will also encourage you to think for yourself and to have the courage of your own convictions.

Someone may want to tick you off about something or tell you about some of the injustices of the world, but you'll soon decide that a little of this goes a long way. Try to save the situation by appealing to their sense of humour, although this doesn't mean ridiculing or making fun of their opinions.

Relationships are intense and highlycharged today, and you feel a great deal of love and affection towards the special people in your life. However, if you can't express this you'll feel cheated, and this frustration needs an outlet for all that pent-up emotion. Put it to constructive use, rather than waste it on a hissy fit or jealous tantrum.

It's a very sociable day, with plenty of opportunities to catch up on the latest gossip. Why not get in touch with a friend on the spur of the moment and suggest meeting up?

This is also a good day for taking part in a discussion because you'll find it easy to voice your opinions. Lucky numbers are 6 and 12.

Barely Escaped

One minute ago, I was enjoying lunch in the local forest with my friends and now I’m running away from a giant, brown grizzly bear!

I can’t think of anything else but staying alive! A million thoughts race through my mind. Where are my friends now? Are they safe? Where will I go now? Drops of sweat race down my face as I hear my heart thumping like thunder. I dash behind a large rock, carefully watching the bear. Seeing the bear’s razor-sharp teeth, I feel a shiver down my spine. Fear grips me! His unnerving growl echoes ominously through the forest. Should I stay behind this rock or should I run for the tree on my right? The bear is coming closer. I must run to that tree which is a few risky metres away. Running then leaping up and grabbing onto the lowest branch, I barely escape

THE SECRET TO SELF-REGULATION

Say goodbye to fleeting willpower and unlock lasting change with effective strategies.

Have you ever struggled to tackle new goals, such as starting a regular exercise routine or waking up early to hit the gym? Despite our best intentions, it's common to find ourselves succumbing to distractions, temptations, and procrastination. But fear not! Research has uncovered an intriguing secret to achieving lasting behaviour change: self-regulation. This article will delve into the fascinating findings that reveal why people who are effective at achieving their goals don't rely solely on willpower to resist temptations. Instead, they harness the power of self-regulation to drive meaningful and sustainable transformations.

UNDERSTANDING THE LIMITATIONS OF WILLPOWER

For years, willpower has been touted as the driving force behind behavioural change. Many believed that if one simply possessed enough determination and self-control, they could

overcome any challenge and stick to their goals. However, this perspective fails to acknowledge the inherent limitations of willpower.

Research has shown that willpower is a finite resource that depletes over time, especially when faced with constant decision-making and resisting temptations. It's like a muscle that can become fatigued and less effective as the day progresses. This explains why we often find ourselves more susceptible to giving in to temptations, such as reaching for unhealthy snacks in the evening after a long day of making tough choices.

THE POWER OF SELF-REGULATION

So, if willpower isn't the key to lasting behaviour change, what is? Enter self-regulation, a concept that encompasses a range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural processes that enable individuals to manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions effectively. Unlike willpower, which relies on sheer

force of effort, self-regulation involves a deeper understanding of oneself and the ability to make deliberate choices aligned with long-term goals.

One famous example that highlights the power of self-regulation is the Stanford marshmallow experiment conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In this study, young children were given a choice between eating one marshmallow immediately or waiting for a short period to receive two marshmallows. The researchers found that children who were able to delay gratification and wait for the second marshmallow demonstrated better self-regulation skills.

THE SECRETS TO LASTING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE

Goal Setting and Planning: Effective self-regulators set clear, specific, and achievable goals. They break down their objectives into manageable steps and develop a concrete plan of action. This approach helps them stay motivated and focused on the long-term outcome.

Monitoring and Feedback: Self-regulators consistently monitor their progress and seek feedback to evaluate their performance. This feedback loop allows them to make necessary

adjustments, learn from their mistakes, and stay on track.

Building Habits: Habits play a vital role in self-regulation. By automating certain behaviours through repetition, individuals can conserve their mental energy and make their desired actions more effortless. For instance, waking up early to go to the gym becomes easier when it becomes a habit ingrained in their daily routine.

Emotion Regulation: Emotional states can greatly influence self-regulation. Successful individuals develop strategies to manage their emotions effectively, such as mindfulness techniques, stress reduction exercises, or seeking social support. By understanding and regulating their emotions, they avoid impulsive decisions that derail their progress.

Self-Compassion and Resilience: Self-regulation is not about perfection but about progress. Those who excel at self-regulation show self-compassion and resilience in the face of setbacks. They view failures as learning opportunities and use them to adapt and improve their strategies for achieving their goals.

Milestone celebration for Logan Entertainment Centre

The red carpet will be rolled out at the Logan Entertainment Centre next month as the iconic community venue celebrates its 21st birthday.

A gala evening of entertainment will headline the birthday celebrations on Saturday July 22.

The program includes the hit show Sisters Doing It For Themselves featuring the Sister Act soundtracks live on stage.

A post-show cocktail party, with live music and a dessert bar, will carry celebrations into the evening. Tickets are $79.

The milestone celebrations begin on Tuesday, July 4 with two performances of the children’s play Are We There Yet? at 12pm and 2:30pm.

Tickets are $15 and include a sausage sizzle picnic on the lawn between shows.

Mayor Darren Power said the Logan Entertainment Centre had become one of the city’s most popular pieces of community infrastructure.

“I remember that when the Entertainment Centre was built in 2002, it was a big step forward for the city,” Cr Power said.

“It made arts and entertainment accessible in Logan. Residents no longer needed to go into Brisbane to see some of the big touring shows.

“Since then, the LEC has been very well supported and utilised, not just for entertainment but for important events like our Volunteer Awards, Sports Awards, citizenship ceremonies and local school events.”

Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall is looking forward to celebrating the historic LEC milestone.

“The LEC has an impressive history of delivering fantastic performances and community events,” Cr Hall said.

“It will be great for the city to come together in July to celebrate an iconic Logan venue in typical Entertainment Centre fashion – with a great show and lots of fun.”

Division 2 Councillor Teresa Lane encourages residents from across the city to get involved in the celebrations.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity to celebrate a venue that has brought so much joy and laughter to the entire community. The program has something for everyone,” Cr Lane said.

Tickets and further information on both Logan Entertainment Centre 21st Birthday events can be found on the LoganArts website.

THE RIGHT WAY TO USE RETINOL THIS WINTER

Retinol, hailed as the "gold standard of anti-ageing," is a powerhouse ingredient for your skin. However, during winter, some people hesitate to use retinol due to concerns about potential skin damage. Fear not! With the right approach, you can incorporate retinol into your winter skincare routine without harming your skin.

Start slowly, especially if you're new to retinol or have sensitive skin. Begin with a low concentration and gradually increase usage, as winter makes the skin more prone to dryness and sensitivity.

Hydration is key. Ensure your skin is wellmoisturised before applying retinol. Look for a nourishing moisturiser with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. This combats winter dryness and creates a protective barrier.

Gentleness is paramount. Opt for a mild cleanser that won't strip your skin of natural oils, as winter weather already causes dryness. Harsh cleansers worsen the problem and make retinol use challenging.

Boost your routine with a hydrating serum. Serums containing hyaluronic acid or niacinamide provide an extra layer of hydration, replenishing moisture and soothing the skin.

Don't forget sunscreen. Even in winter, harmful UV rays reach your skin. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 as the final step in your morning routine to protect your skin from sun damage.

Consider buffering, also know as retinol sandwiching, if needed. If your skin is sensitive or prone to dryness, apply moisturiser before and after retinol to minimise potential irritation. Note that buffering may reduce retinol's effectiveness.

Opt for richer formulations. Cream-based or oil-based retinol products provide additional moisture and nourishment during the dry winter months.

Listen to your skin. If excessive dryness, irritation, or sensitivity occurs despite your efforts, take a short break from retinol. Let your skin recover before reintroducing it or explore milder alternatives.

Remember, consult a dermatologist for personalised advice based on your specific skin type and concerns.
