Some of you may remember that in the decade-long drought we had from 2000 – 2010, everyone was given, as well as a four-minute sand timer to ensure we had short showers, a booklet to note down our water usage. We were supposed to read our water meter weekly.
I decided I would do that on Sunday mornings, so the first day I duly went out and lifted up the water meter cover. In those days, they were metal and had a hole in the centre so you could lift it up easily. To my horror, a black snake was hibernating inside. I quickly replaced the cover and on Monday rang the Logan City Council. They told me a snake catcher could be contacted, gave me his name and phone number and told me he charges to remove the snake. I decided I didn’t want to pay anyone and rang Parks and Wildlife. They told me they didn’t remove snakes, but
there was a snake catcher in my area – and gave me the same man’s details. However, they said that if it didn’t bother me, I should leave it there as another snake could easily go in there as it was nice and warm with the sun on the metal cover.
So I rang the Council back and told them the result of my conversation. They thanked me, as the meter would be read in 3 -4 weeks’ time, and they would warn the meter reader. But by the time he came, the snake had woken up and had gone.
The next year, we all got new covers –heavy plastic, I think they are, with no hole in the middle. You need to lever them up from the side with a screwdriver.

It was four ‘Dees’ that helped Neiva Ganaba reach her goal and bring her joy in 2023. A Dream, Determination, Dedication and a Drive to succeed. Things haven’t always been this way for Neiva, but she is a strong woman born in Sudan who relocated to Australia with her young son and wanted a better future for herself and her boy.
Neiva was working as a Primary School teacher in Africa but on arrival in Brisbane she worked in a meat factory as that was the easiest job to obtain. While in the meat factory Neiva started thinking about transitioning her skill-set to become a Support
Worker and called a number of Community Centre’s for assistance about getting a qualification for Aged Care but was offered ideas that were not suitable (“online courses that I would have to pay for, and usually no work placement arrangements…”). It happened to be a friend who asked Neiva if she knew of MultiLink and suggested she get in touch about their Cert. III Individual Support courses.
Neiva called-up and hasn’t looked back since! Neiva had TWO jobs before she had even completed her training with the excellent crew at Blue Stone Medical and her work placement in an Aged Care residential facility.
Neiva decided to take both job offers and is now receiving ‘rave reviews’ from her employers and clients. Neiva says, “The work is fantastic and it fits around my parenting. I feel so happy in this industry and I can’t thank MultiLink enough. Blue Stone Medical and MultiLink have done so much for me, no question.”
Neiva’s training came at NO COST to her thanks to Queensland Government funding and their Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects. MultiLink have run six such projects during 2023 in other fields such as warehousing, hospitality, childcare and automotive. If you or your organisation would like to find out more, contact MultiLink on the email below.
Stand up and cheer Logan: it’s our time to celebrate on the Olympic stage! This weekend marks the countdown clock passing nine years to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in South East Queensland in 2032.
To mark the milestone, Logan City Council is compiling a list of those connected to our city who have earned the elite accolade of being known as an Olympian or Paralympian – Summer or Winter Games.
It’s a big ask in a diverse city that is home to more than 230 cultural backgrounds.
The City of Logan has a proud sporting culture, producing champions such as BMX freestyle gold medallist Logan Martin, world record holder and multiple sprint freestyle medallist Jodie Henry and Australia’s first Winter Olympics gold medallist, short course ice skater Steven Bradbury.
Other homegrown sporting champions include rising superstar swimmer Mollie O’Callaghan, decathlete Ash Moloney, steeplechase runner Genevieve Gregson (nee LaCaze) and Para-shooting medallist Natalie Smith, who won the Australian Paralympic Team’s first medal of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
We’re looking for not only Olympic and Paralympic athletes but also coaches, doctors, physios and support staff – present and past. And from all nationalities that now call the City of Logan home.
Mayor Darren Power said the City of Logan is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and would play a significant role in delivering the 2032 Games.
“By 2032, there will be more than half a million people living in our city,” Councillor Power said.
“We are not only ideally placed midway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but we are central to key transport corridors and have a willing and reliable workforce to help deliver a successful 2032 Games.
“And no-one can match our cultural diversity that will see many visiting athletes and tourists attracted to Logan to enjoy the culture, cuisine and friendship our many communities offer.”
The City of Logan has been allocated a multi-use indoor venue for the 2032 Games, proposed to be built in Logan Central.
Council has endorsed a Legacy Roadmap for the 2032 Games to identify opportunities for
the city and plans to achieve those benefits, while also doubling down on a bold bid to become a South East Queensland destination of choice.
Council’s 2023-2028 Destination Management Plan charts a new course for the city as a leader in sustainable nature-based encounters, sporting and cultural events and entertainment experiences.
The plan will work in tandem with Council’s 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap – an exciting new vision to capitalise on economic, cultural and social development opportunities ahead of the 2032 Games.
It is expected that locally based Olympians and Paralympians will be invited to help celebrate milestones on the Legacy Roadmap and other Games and sporting celebrations.

Bringing home a new puppy is a delightful experience, but it comes with unique challenges, including teething. Just like human babies, puppies go through a teething phase as they grow and understanding this process can help you provide the best care for your furry companion.
When does teething occur?
Puppies typically start teething at around 3-4 months of age and continue until they are 6-8 months old. During this period, their baby teeth fall out, making way for their adult teeth to come in.
Signs of teething:
You might notice your puppy displaying signs of discomfort, such as increased chewing, drooling, and irritability. They may seek relief by biting on anything they can find, including furniture and shoes.
Proper chew toys:
To soothe their sore gums and prevent destructive behaviour, offer your puppy appropriate
chew toys. Durable rubber toys, rope toys, and frozen washcloths can provide relief while safeguarding your belongings.
Dental care:
Start dental care early by gently brushing your puppy's teeth with a soft brush and puppy-friendly toothpaste. This will help maintain good oral hygiene and get them accustomed to the process.
Diet adjustments:
During teething, some puppies may experience decreased appetite or tender gums, so you may need to adjust their diet. Opt for softer food or soak their kibble in water to make it easier to chew.
Remember, puppy teething is a natural process that every young dog goes through. With patience, appropriate care and lots of love, you can help your puppy sail through this phase and emerge with a healthy, happy smile.

Take a Fresh Perspective - In the everevolving world of business, the pursuit of growth and profitability is a constant endeavour. Often, companies overlook the hidden opportunities that lie within their existing operations. Why not take this time of the year to shed light on the potential for substantial improvement in your business's bottom line? Explore the importance of recognition - taking a fresh perspective to develop new strategies and implementation with changed habits.
The first crucial step towards transforming a business's bottom line is recognising the areas that require change. This might not always align with your initial assumption; this is why external people to help is important; we see things externally the business becomes blind too. It necessitates a meticulous examination of the company's processes, expenditures, pricing strategies, and market dynamics. By conducting a comprehensive review, businesses can uncover previously unnoticed inefficiencies or untapped potential.
Armed with a deep understanding of your organisation's current state, it is imperative to develop a new strategy. This strategy should aim to maximise revenues, minimise costs, and optimise overall performance. A pricing review, for instance, may reveal that a business has been undervaluing its products or services. Adjusting pricing structures to align with market demand can lead to a significant boost in profitability.
Having a well-crafted strategy is only the beginning. The real transformation occurs when new actions are implemented consistently and effectively – new habits. This involves creating a plan and assigning responsibilities and accountability. Additionally, cultivating habits that support the strategy is vital. Regular monitoring and tracking of key performance
indicators (KPIs) can provide valuable insights, allowing for timely adjustments and ensuring sustained progress.
“Your habits shape your brand identity”.
Success Stories:
Consider a business struggling to secure profitable contracts due to inefficient tendering processes. By reviewing and streamlining these processes, they can dramatically improve their success rate. We have had a change result of 300% increase in contract wins, leading to a substantial difference in their bottom line. Simply by reviewing these processes and thinking through different touch points strategies.
Similarly, an expense review might uncover redundant expenditures (all those subscriptions) or opportunities for cost optimisation. By diligently analysing and eliminating unnecessary expenses, businesses can achieve significant savings, directly impacting their profitability.
Unlocking the potential for substantial improvements in a business's bottom line often requires a fresh perspective. By recognising the need for change, developing a new strategy, and implementing effective actions, companies can achieve remarkable results. Whether it's through tendering process optimisation, expense review, pricing adjustments, or other strategic initiatives, businesses can attain 30%, 50%, or even 100% differences in their bottom line. The key lies in proactive evaluation, innovative thinking, and sustained commitment to the new strategies and habits that drive success is often having that external look.

Choosing the right school for your child is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. School open days are a great way to gather essential information to make an informed choice about your child's education. However, with the abundance of information provided during these events, it's crucial to ask the right questions to get a genuine understanding of the school's environment and offerings.
Here are some important questions to ask during school open days:
What is the child-to-teacher ratio?
What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?
What are your average class sizes?
How do you communicate students’ academic growth to parents? How is this tracked?
How much homework do students have? What is the school’s philosophy/approach to homework?
How does the school support under- and over-achieving students?
What is the School's Approach to Technology in Education?
Do you offer before and after school care?
How are students supported to make important decisions about their education?
When attending school open days and asking important questions, it's crucial to remember that the decision is not just about finding the right school for yourself but, more importantly, for your child. Each child is unique, so involve them in the process, consider their needs, interests, and comfort, and seek a nurturing environment that fosters their growth both academically and personally. A collaborative effort between parents, students, and educators will lead to a well-rounded choice, laying the foundation for a positive and fulfilling educational journey.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.Awe and Wonder was the theme for the Kimberley College biennial College fair held at the end of term two. Principal Glenn Johnson said, “the theme was chosen to create a sense of curiosity, to inspire and to provide students across the College the opportunity to take a deep dive and investigate across a range of subject and curriculum areas over the term. The fair provided the students with the perfect opportunity to showcase their learning and classroom work to family and friends”.
The fair began with a cornucopia of hands-on classroom displays, covering everything from globetrotting travel to exploring world records and scientific discovery. After an official opening and spirited choir performance, the fair provided an engaging and entertaining day of art, dance, science, and music on each of the stages set up around the campus.
Students and families were also able to enjoy huge inflatables on the main oval, sideshow alley, carnival rides, and grab a bite to eat with food trucks and market stalls onsite.
Principal Johnson said, “it was a fantastic turn out today and we are so appreciative of the families and local community who are always so supportive of our students, they really are the heart of the College”.
Situated in a semi-rural bush setting at Carbrook, Kimberley College is a coeducational, non-denominational independent school that caters for prep to year 12 and takes a holistic approach to education underpinned by the Marzano framework.

You'll only receive what you're prepared to give. It's about reciprocation, especially in your most personal relationships. You're primarily concerned with your self-image. That should be the last thing on your mind. Try to stand in the other person's shoes to gain a more compassionate insight into their feelings.
The overly cautious vibe may well undermine your sense of confidence, especially when it comes to very recent choices, decisions or new directions. Something that you may have settled on could provoke second thoughts. Give this matter plenty of time; don't backtrack just yet!
This is a super day for getting on with your work. You're in exactly the right mood for it, especially if you're writing letters, making phone calls or attending meetings. This is also a good opportunity for getting to know a colleague or customer better, so maybe you should ask them out for a drink or have a chat at lunch.
It's time to assess the progress of your long-term goals. However, you'll have to be honest with yourself, otherwise the whole thing will be a waste of effort. So evaluate all your current projects to see how they're progressing. If you realise that your heart is no longer in something, it will be far better to drop it now than to continue with it
Certain situations aren't nearly as cut and dried as you might like to think. So do your best not to fall into the trap of thinking that a delicate problem is easy to solve and getting angry when people fail to tackle it in the way you suggest. You may even have to eat your words at some point, which will give you mental indigestion.
This is a fantastic day for being spontaneous, especially if you're still feeling slightly rattled by what happened yesterday. So if someone suggests doing something on the spur of the moment, you'll be very tempted to say 'yes'. You might also be thrilled when you bump into the last person you were expecting to see.
You don't have as much energy as usual today, so pace yourself accordingly. If you try to force yourself to do too much you'll simply run out of stamina at some point and have to admit defeat, which will make you feel embarrassed and possibly even slightly depressed. So do yourself a favour and take it easy today.
Consider ways to improve your health. If you're well aware that there's more of you than there should be, or that you' re skimping on proper food at the moment, you know what to do. If you're concerned about strange symptoms, seek medical help as soon as possible so you can find out what's going on and take the appropriate action.
Your home life is looking really good today and you'll thoroughly enjoy being with your nearest and dearest whenever you get the chance. You might even decide to alter some of your arrangements so you can spend more time at home. It's a wonderful day for recharging your batteries in familiar and comforting settings.
You'll be happiest today if you can keep switching from one activity to another to stop yourself getting bored. You need plenty of variety right now, especially if it arrives in the form of lively loved ones and lots of social events. If you don't have anything exciting planned, start planning immediately.
You make a point of getting on well with whoever happens to be around today, even if they aren't one of your favourites. It's a particularly good day for talking to people you respect and admire, and you could glean some valuable information from them in the course of your conversation. You're happy to learn from their wisdom right now.
Cheer yourself up by spending time with friends and other likeminded people. If you can't see someone in the flesh, give them a ring or send them an e-mail. What's important now is to make contact with people who lift you out of yourself and give you a wider perspective on the world.

“Thank you for helping me. I really owe you,” stated servant Odious who was God Sunoid’s servant.
“No problem,” responded King Sadime.
The very next day, whilst King Sadime was walking around his garden, admiring his crimson red roses, there was a bolt of golden light. King Sadime managed to take a look around and he realized he was in the heavens. He was in awe when a deep voice interrupted him.
“I have summoned you here for you have taken great care of my servant, Odious,” the unknown voice called.
“Who are you?” King Sadime whimpered, quite startled at what was happening.
“I am God Sunoid! Therefore, you should bow down to me!” bellowed the god.
King Sadime immediately dropped down with no hesitation.
“I can’t believe it! I’m in the heavens and now I’ve met God Sunoid,” he thought, dripping with sweat.
“I will grant you any wish you want,” God Sunoid announced.
King Sadime’s face suddenly lit up like fireworks. “In that case, I wish for everything I touch to turn to crystal,” he exclaimed, beaming with happiness.
“Do you actually want this?” questioned God Sunoid.
“Of course, I do,” replied King Sadime.
“Oh, fine!” responded God Sunoid. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
As soon as King Sadime arrived back at his castle, he raced around his garden and touched roses, apples, daises, peonies and practically everything in the garden. After many hours of work, he stared, finally satisfied at the scenery-blinding crystals shimmering and dancing in the heat of the day.
After that, he touched many things in his castle – his armor and his cape and much, much more. He was very happy. King Sadime’s crystal cape clinked and clanked as he shuffled along the cold, dark unwelcoming castle corridors.
Once he was seated on his glittering crystal throne, he demanded a bowl of delicious apples, mouth-watering grapes, juicy mangoes, and a tall glass of wine. When the servant brought in his elephant-sized bowl and giraffe-
sized wine glass, King Sadime looked like a ravenous lion about to pounce on its prey. As soon as he grabbed a mouth-watering mango, he tried to sink his teeth in but instead, it hurt badly – very, very badly. He looked down in disbelief at the lifeless, crystal mango.
“It’s… it’s a crystal!” he declared, turning red with rage.
After calming down, he decided to gulp down his wine but instead, a chunk of crystal nearly stuck in his throat. After what seemed like hours of recovering, his cat found him and pounced on him. But that was when he finally realized his boulder-sized mistake. Shaking uncontrollably and staring down at his frozen feline, King Sadime knew his wish was not terrific but terrible. Slowly he placed his majestic cat figurine on his crystal table. He wept and wept and wept and wept. Suddenly, he remembered that God Sunoid loved goats so he hurried to the nearest farm and demanded their finest, silkiest goat.
“Follow me you stupid, stupid goat,” sobbed King Sadime, regretting he had chosen such a silly, selfish wish.
“Oh my, what happened?” asked the God Sunoid, gazing down at King Sadime’s swollen, tear-streaked face.
“I want to reverse my power, and I present you with my land’s finest silkiest goat,” stuttered King Sadime.
“Oh, I told you so,” answered God Sunoid. “But how can I refuse this beautiful offering?”
And with the snap of a finger, everything was back to normal.
King Sadime was never greedy again.
Is homework a good idea?
Most students today have homework and they must complete it. Some students even get detention for not doing it. Certainly, homework should be banned! We should think about the time, the stress, and the interest level of these compulsory home tasks.
First of all, homework should be banned because it is so time consuming. Children spend lots of hours on a few pages of math and soon they have no time to play and enjoy their life. Homework is useless and if I were you, I would burn my homework and run away from it.
Secondly, homework is too stressful. People sometimes cannot sleep properly because of homework. They stay up till 11 and don’t have a break. Going to bed late, pupil’s eyes become swollen due to tiredness. This should certainly tell teachers to stop giving homework.
Homework is not interesting! It is so boring! There are many things to do other than your homework. However, there are always pages of homework to do and you barely learn anything from it which is horrible and very unappetizing. Homework is the worst nightmare and should be put in its grave.
It is terrible – a waste of time, boring and very stressful.
Bye bye, homework!
New operating hours will apply at the Logan Recycling Market from Friday, August 18.
The market, at Logan City Council’s Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility, is one of the most popular of its kind in South East Queensland.
The new hours will ensure the public is bestserved on days and during operating times which historically have proven most popular –Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The market will no longer open on Mondays.
The new hours are:
Friday: 10am to 3pm
Saturday: 10am to 3pm
Sunday: 10am to 3pm
Waste and Resource Recovery Chair, Councillor Jon Raven said the operating times had been adjusted after a review of customer visitation and activity at the market. Admission is still free.
“We know everyone loves to come to the Logan Recycling Market to get a bargain and that’s why there are often long lines to be first in on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays,” Cr Raven said.
“These new hours will help peak times run smoothly and make sure we recycle more items than ever.”
The new hours will also provide opportunities for staff and resources to be assigned to the customer recycling materials drop-off shed and green waste drop-off areas.
City of Logan ratepayers get four free tipping vouchers annually.
Residential green waste (garden vegetation only) can be dumped for free at all Council waste facilities.
When no free voucher is presented, fees for domestic waste loads are:
• Small (up to 240 litres – similar to a full wheelie bin): $10
• Medium (up to 1 cubic metre – a full sedan boot or utility tray): $19
• Large (up to 2 cubic metres – a full trailer or full utility): $30
Fees for commercial general waste vary across general and green waste, load size and those facilities with a weighbridge (Browns Plains and Carbrook) and non-weighbridge sites (Greenbank, Logan Village and Beenleigh).
“If you don’t have a voucher, please make sure you sort your load into piles of recycling materials, green waste and landfill rubbish, so you are
only charged for waste that goes to landfill,” Cr Raven said.

In the world of fitness and nutrition, myths abound, leading to confusion and misguided practices. Let's debunk some of the most common fitness myths and provide evidencebased insights to help you make informed decisions.
The belief that you can burn fat in specific areas of your body through targeted exercises is false. Fat loss occurs throughout the body, and spot reduction is not scientifically supported. Focus on overall fat-burning exercises and a balanced diet.
Weightlifting won't make most women bulk up significantly. Women have lower testosterone levels, and resistance training helps build lean muscle mass, leading to a toned physique while improving strength.
Carbohydrates are essential for energy, especially for active individuals. Choose complex carbs like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables for sustained energy and essential nutrients.
Fasted cardio doesn't significantly enhance fat burning compared to regular cardio. Focus on a balanced diet and consistent exercise to achieve fat loss.
Listen to your body and avoid pushing through severe pain during workouts. Gradual progression is safer and more sustainable.

If good things come in threes, then Logan City Council is certainly delivering with its latest exciting park upgrades.
Community input has been at the forefront of helping choose new facilities and features to create fun, engaging and accessible parks that cater for all the family.
Major upgrade works are now underway at Riverdale Park (Meadowbrook), Alexander Clark Park (Loganholme) and Mabel Park (Slacks Creek)
The upgrades are part of an unprecedented local parks development program that will continue into next year following a $63 million funding allocation in Council’s 2023/24 Budget for the management, maintenance and upgrades of all City of Logan parks over the next 12 months.
City of Logan is home to more than 960 parks and reserves.
The works reflect innovation and safety in design while also incorporating features to
ensure hands-on engagement and increased accessibility.
Popular features in many upgrade plans include basketball half-courts, ninja fitness courses, adventure playgrounds, flying foxes, dry creek beds, swings and slides.
Barbecues, picnic shelters and water bubblers are also being installed while new dog off-leash areas and additional dog waste bins are also planned.
Riverdale Park, Armstrong Road, Meadowbrook
Input from students from Loganlea High School is helping to shape a $2.5 million upgrade of Riverdale Park in Meadowbrook.
Students from the school’s Year 9 Signature class were invited by Logan City Council Lifestyle Chair and Division 6 Councillor Tony Hall to be ‘Councillors for a Day’.
One of their tasks was to settle on a theme for the new equipment to be installed at Riverdale Park.
While a pirate theme was popular early, a dinosaur theme was the majority decision.
The students speculated that playing in a dinosaur-themed park would bring children together for fun while a pirate-theme might encourage them to play fight-based games.
Proposed works include a new playground, exercise equipment, picnic shelters and barbecue facilities.
Cr Hall was accompanied by Mayor Darren Power, Loganlea SHS principal Brenton Farleigh, and his Year 9 student in turning turn the first sod for the project which includes Division 6 Local Infrastructure Program funding.
“We engaged with local school students on what they would like in the park and the feedback was overwhelming for the new additions to have a dinosaur theme, so that’s what we are going to do. I can’t wait to see it finished later this year,” Cr Hall said.
Alexander Clark Park, Dewar Drive, Loganholme
The first two stages of a $6.34 million upgrade are now underway and are expected to be completed in late November 2023, subject to suitable weather and construction conditions.
The main playground will get a range of new play equipment and facilities.
These include a feature play tower, water play equipment, flying fox, slides, swings, children’s bike track, active sports area, park shelters, park furniture, shade sails and sensory garden.
Stage 3, which includes a new park entrance, additional parking and new boardwalks, is expected to completed in 2024 with two more stages to follow on a timeline yet to be finalised.
Other works will include an active sports area with basketball and volleyball courts, handball court, a multi-purpose open space, additional parking, a new toilet block and upgrades to existing walking tracks.
Division 10 Councillor Miriam Stemp also has helped turn the first sod on a $6.34 million tagged upgrade at Alexander Clark Park in Dewar Drive at Loganholme. The project includes Division 10 Local Infrastructure Program funding.
“These works will cement Alexander Clark Park’s reputation as one of the best multi-use parks in the city with something for everyone irrespective of your age. Once finished it will be a perfect location for a family day out,” Cr Stemp said.
Nestled next to Mabel Park Primary and High Schools, this park is one of the most popular and well-used in the City of Logan.
Works began last week on a $1.8 million upgrade to the existing playground upgrade with a large bespoke play tower and new shade sails to be installed.
New nature play elements include small waterplay components such as misters and water pumps along with balancing logs and stepping stones.
Other additions will include a junior bike skills track, new fitness station, new seating and shelters. The dog off-leash area will also be upgraded.
Division 3 Councillor Mindy Russell was joined local primary and secondary students to turn the first sod on the upgrade on Wednesday, July 19. The project includes Division 3 Local Infrastructure Program funding.
“Slacks Creek is booming as a suburb and this park upgrade is a terrific investment that will provide facilities to help nurture the minds and bodies of the many young people in the neighbourhood who use Mabel Park regularly,” Cr Russell said.
