APPRENTICES GIVEN THE KIT TO SUCCESS

Three Logan City Council apprentices have been presented with the tools of their trades to take on their journey towards exciting careers.

Mayor Darren Power today presented the kits to Matthew Thompson (apprentice mechanical fitter), Mathew Bond (apprentice plumber) and JD Christ (heavy commercial vehicle mechanic apprentice).

The young men are part of a pilot program to determine the viability of directly hiring apprentices and trainees into Council’s workforce rather than using third-party training organisations.

Queensland legislation requires employers to provide apprentices with tools of trade for each year of their apprenticeships, and this is the first cohort to receive their starter kits from Council.

Councillor Power said regardless of how they were hired, Council trainees and apprentices

gained nationally-recognised qualifications while getting valuable workplace experience.

“The people we employ through our trainee and apprentice program are highly regarded,” Cr Power said.

“They develop a good work ethic and learn skills that set them up for lifelong success in their chosen fields.

“Council employs around 35 people through this program each year, which is not only building our city’s future skilled workforce, but also encouraging them to aspire to a prosperous future.

“Having a trade can take you far, and we are proud to support the next generation who’ll be looking after our city’s infrastructure for years to come.”

SMALL BUSINESS DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN SMALL

As a small business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations of your business and lose sight of the bigger picture. However, celebrating your successes can help you shift your mindset and expand your thinking.

Embrace Change. Technology and consumer behavior are constantly evolving, and it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and innovations. Don't be afraid to try new things and take risks. This could involve adopting new technology, changing your marketing strategy, or expanding your product line. By embracing change, you can keep your business fresh and relevant, and stay ahead of the competition.

Expand your Thinking - Focus on your Strengths. As a small business owner, it can be tempting to try to be everything to everyone. However, this can be a recipe for disaster. Instead, identify what you're good at and focus on those strengths. This could be a particular product or service that you offer, or a unique selling proposition that sets you apart from the competition. By focusing on your strengths, you can create a niche for yourself in the market and build a loyal customer base.

Networking to Open your Mind. By connecting with other business owners and professionals in your industry, you can gain new insights and ideas. Attend industry events, join local business groups, and seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support. Networking can also lead to new partnerships and collaborations, which can help you grow your business and reach new customers.

Keep Learning. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences. You can also read industry publications and subscribe to newsletters and blogs to stay informed. By continually learning and expanding your knowledge, you can stay ahead of the curve and position yourself as an industry leader.

Set Goals and Celebrate. Setting achievable goals can help you stay focused and motivated, and celebrating your successes can help you stay positive and inspired. This could involve setting a revenue target, launching a new product or service, or winning an industry award. By celebrating your successes, you can reinforce your achievements and build momentum for the future.

In conclusion, expanding your thinking as a small business owner is essential for longterm success. Embrace change, focus on your strengths, network, keep learning, and set goals to achieve your full potential. By celebrating your successes, you can build confidence and inspire yourself to achieve even greater heights.

Celebrate this small business month - love your business.

NEW DEPUTY MAYOR APPOINTED

Councillor Laurie Koranski has been appointed Deputy Mayor of the City of Logan for the remainder of the 20202024 term.

A secret ballot was undertaken at today’s Ordinary Council meeting due to the expiry of Cr Natalie Willcocks’s one-year term in line with Local Government Act 2009 requirements.

Cr Koranski said being Deputy Mayor was an honour bestowed upon few people.

“Our city is moving forward, and we’re privileged to be leaders of not just a good city but a great city,” Cr Koranski said.

“By working together over the past three years, we’ve seen Logan prosper through the COVID-19 pandemic and flooding, and we’ll continue to do so.

“We have a steady, reliable and focused Councillor team.”

Mayor Darren Power congratulated Cr Koranski on her appointment and thanked Cr Willcocks for her time in the role over the

NEW ADDRESS HERALDS EXCITING TIMES FOR JIMBOOMBA RSL

The Jimboomba RSL has a new address, but it still feels like home for its members. The heritage building has been reopened following the relocation of the structure to a new site within the Jimboomba Park precinct.

A new Memorial Garden featuring undercover seating, a turfed space designed to stage events and a barbecue area, were also unveiled at the new location.

The $1.18 million project was jointly funded by Logan City Council and the Australian and Queensland Governments.

The relocation of the RSL building is part of the first stage of the draft Jimboomba Park Master Plan which seeks to improve the public space.

Mayor Darren Power said the upgraded facilities would allow Jimboomba RSL to better support the local community and veterans.

“The RSL is always here to help and the upgraded facilities will ensure that the Jimboomba

RSL sub branch can continue to support veterans in the local community,’ Cr Power said.

“It will also serve as a hub for members to continue to plan and deliver important memorial events such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.”

City Lifestyle Chair Cr Laurie Koranski said the relocation project was a great outcome for the RSL and the Jimboomba community.

“Logan is growing rapidly and it’s important that we continue to develop and evolve our community spaces so our residents can continue to make the most of them,” Cr Koranski said.

“I look forward to seeing many services and community events at Jimboomba RSL.”

Council provided funding for the project through the Sport and Recreation Budget, as well as $250,000 from the Division 9 Local Infrastructure Program.

Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan has led the way on the relocation and upgrade of the RSL building.

“It has taken a lot of hard work to make this happen for our veterans and the Jimboomba community,” Cr Bannan said.

“I’m proud that we have been able to find the RSL a fantastic new location with upgraded facilities that will ensure it remains a much-loved and well-used community venue.”

'Another important step towards facility improvement'

Mayor Darren Power speaks about the importance of the Jimboomba RSL relocation and upgrade to the RSL sub branch members and the wider Jimboomba community at the official re-opening.

Jimboomba RSL Vice-President Brett McCreadie paid tribute to building’s namesake, the late Gaven Thurlow OAM.

“We wouldn’t have a building without Gaven. He literally loaded it onto the truck in Wacol and brought it here,” Mr McCreadie said.

“It’s a great facility and I want to thank our community representatives, and everyone involved [in this project].

“This beautiful space has been created and we look forward to using it for many, many years to come in memory of Gaven Thurlow OAM and others who have contributed to our sub-branch over the years.”

The Australian Government provided $750,000 to the project through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).

This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia.

Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, the Hon Kristy McBain MP, said the Australian Government was pleased to support this project.

“RSL clubs are such important gathering places for current and ex-service personnel, their families and the wider community,” Ms McBain said.

“That’s why I’m so excited that we could support Jimboomba RSL clubhouse’s new lease on life – where it will continue its proud history of bringing the local community together for events and commemorations.

“This is just one of many fantastic upgrades we’re supporting under our $3.25 billion LRCI Program, which is having such a positive impact in communities, particularly in regional and rural Australia.”

The Queensland Government contributed $132,787.27 through the Queensland Remembers Grant.

State Member for Logan, Linus Power MP congratulated Jimboomba RSL on the move.

“The Government continues to support the RSL as an important local community organisation,’ he said.

“A big thank you to all our hard-working volunteers who support our veterans.”

Family problems may have a friend or love partner feeling unsettled and helpless. This person could have a few communication problems, especially if firmness is required. Don't get sucked into the situation. Just point out the facts.

Has someone given you a chore to do and then taken off without giving you any instructions? It's no wonder you feel confused and frustrated! If there is no manual, and if no one else knows what's up, don't feel bad about letting it go until you're given proper coaching.

Staying indoors might not be the best thing today, Aries. You might feel vague muscular aches and pains for which you can't find any reason. They could be the result of inactivity rather than any dysfunction. Get outside and go for a walk.

A family member may be absent without explanation, Taurus. This might worry everyone, and not without reason. It's best to stay calm and phone friends, colleagues, and anyone who might know where this person is. All is probably well.

Make sure you enjoy a good hearty laugh for at least some portion of the day. Whether you're in a virtual meeting or just talking to your cat or dog, this laughter will help heal some of the tensions that are building within you. You will feel a tremendous relief.

Are you working on a project that requires a little ingenuity? If so, today you may draw a blank. Perhaps it would be best to put it away and do something else for a while. Trying to force the issue will only reinforce the mental blocks.

The position of the planets encourages you to be more spontaneous in your love life, and less conditioned by and worried about what other people may be thinking. There may be someone whom you are particularly drawn to, whom you think your friends or family may not approve of.

Not all the pieces seem to be fitting into place for you today, but that's fine. They don't have to. Give yourself a break. Don't put pressure on yourself to accomplish anything extraordinary. Just kick back and relax.

Your mind is clear, and you're extra sharp and witty. Have fun with this energy whether or not you are sharing it with friends, co-workers, or both. Light-hearted conversation brings breakthroughs in your career, whether or not you're on the clock today.

Some news about a major event could unsettle and confuse you, Scorpio. You're primarily concerned about how this will affect you. The answer is probably very little. The truth will come out in a few days. Hang in there!

The people you communicate with today will be very beneficial to your career, even if these conversations aren't happening in any sort of work-related context. By just being yourself, you will automatically draw lucky and supportive people to your side.

If you're working, others will find ways to distract you, and it won't be easy to stay focused. Most likely, however, you'll be footloose and fancy-free anyway, and this will most certainly be for the best. Talk to others instead of turning within.
