City of Logan Mayor Darren Power is urging residents whose homes were affected by flooding earlier this year to register for a new buy-back and funding program.
The Resilient Homes Fund will assist eligible homeowners to repair or retrofit their homes to incorporate flood-resilient design and materials in liveable rooms or areas.
Homes in high-risk areas that aren’t suitable for retrofitting may take part in a buyback scheme. The fund is jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments.
Mayor Power said homeowners who experienced flooding should consider registering their interest.
“Unfortunately, much of South East Queensland was built on a floodplain and some areas of Logan are particularly prone to flooding,” Councillor Power said.
“This initiative is opportunity to fix some of the more high-risk homes and make our city safer for residents in low-lying areas.
“More than $700 million dollars has been set aside but there are many places in Queensland that are eligible so it’s important our flood-impacted residents don’t delay in registering their interest.”
For home buybacks, funding will be provided to Council to purchase the house and land. The land would then be re-zoned into non-liveable uses such as open space and green corridors. For further information visit Resilient Homes Fund.
The fund is administered by the Queensland Government. Logan City Council cannot answer inquiries relating to the program. Nearly 200 homes in the City of Logan were flooded in the February/March rain event. In response, Council launched a flood recovery package that supported impacted residents, small businesses and the environment.

Experience, Connection, Communication, and Listening all help build your business tribe. Marketing Media preferences are changing but so are our customer expectations.
1. 80% of customers consider the experience they receive to be just as important as the product they are purchasing. These are their emotions, opinions, and perceptions they get when they connect with your brand, your product/service information, and support before, during, and after purchasing your product.
2. Now more than ever, customers expect to feel connected to your company. They want to know your company and its values and history, as well as the community or tribe you are creating around you. What is your business tribe - do they have a connection with a shared purpose or goals and a common culture - customers really want to be part of the connections of your community? Tips for setting up. What gets your customers inspired, and what do they admire, speak to them from the heart, pick a platform and be consistent, be generous, be nice, and genuinely you. Be loyal to your customers and give back, basically earning their trust.
3. Third and most importantly, customers want to talk (communicate) with your company in real-time (no waiting 24 hours for a call back) they want convenience at their doorstep. They want to have two-way conversations with you - that does not invade their privacy. Be considerate of their time. It is just as precious as your time.
4. They want to know you will listen to their future requirements and problems. That is receiving their information needs, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding to their needs. Don’t interrupt your customers, look them in the eyes and be prepared to listen, don’t go into sales mode immediately.
5. Finally, it is important to look after their wellbeing - that is their physical and mental health. This is a major component of the decisions they make.
All these sometimes feel like they are disconnected; however if we take the time to review and understand their emotions and our processes, we might just be on to a winner.
So, what do you know about YOUR customers, and have you developed your customer mapping or customer journey? Can they help your business grow? Of course, YES.
• Customer mapping is the emotions your customer goes through, as they find your company and the product they are wanting to purchase. Plus of course the follow on - the relationship you develop with them after their purchase.
• Customer Journey tracks all the processes your customer goes through as they navigate through your company.

ooking after a pool is a delicate balancing act. This is something that Jeff and his team from Poolwerx Jimboomba are true masters at. An expert in all things pool-related, Jeff is a fountain of knowledge, ready to lend a hand or give some advice to keep your pool healthy and
Discover what Jeff had to say about managing your
Hi, my name is Jeff. I am a Jimboomba local and small business owner. I’m a father of 3, Poppy to 6 grandkids and have been mar ried to Michaella for 30 years. Michaella is my business partner and manages the retail and accounts team of Poolw
We are blessed to have a great team at Poolwerx Jimboomba where we provide pool servicing and run a retail store, employing 6 full-time staff. We’ve achieved great success in our business and are looking into further expansion opportunities and hiring more staff this year.
When we’re not at work, Michaella and I enjoy camping and are Grey Nomads-in-training.
Describe a day in the life at Poolwerx Jimboomba.
One of the things I love is that there is no such thing as a typical day at Poolwerx! Every day is different and the demands vary as we are a seasonal business. Most of the day is solution-based problem-solving of pool and equipment issues, which is challenging but very fulfilling.
When and why did you open in Jimboomba?
We opened Poolwerx Jimboomba in 2014, as a mobile-only business, as we wished to move from Brisbane’s suburbs to a more rural setting. I had been involved in water treatment most of my working life and it was the perfect blend of my previous experience along with having worked in a Sunshine Coast pool business, Dunckers Cleaning Supplies and Pool shop.
What services does Poolwerx Jimboomba offer?
At Poolwerx, we offer a large range of main tenance services to keep pools and spas sparkling and give owners peace of mind that they’re swimming in healthy water. We take the hassle out of pool care so families can spend more time enjoying the pool instead of cleaning it!
At Poolwerx Jimboomba we offer regular pool servicing, casual servicing, season start-up checks, equipment checks, handover services for new pool owners, breakdown repairs of equipment, fault finding, along with pool fence safety certification. In the retail and mobile setting, we offer sales of new pool and spa equipment, chemicals, accessories, water testing and professional advice.
Tell us about a time you have transformed a customer’s pool.
We recently assisted a client who had a brandnew pool constructed but had experienced issues with water quality since completion. After checking the equipment system, we discovered the filter had been plumbed in backwards. We were then able to replumb the pool and they were finally able to start enjoying their pool and making backyard memories.
Other examples include clients who have expe rienced ongoing problems with their pool water and equipment. Once our teams completed a health check and evaluate their system, we can identify the cause and solve it.
How often should you get your pool cleaned and tested?
Regular maintenance is required to keep a pool operating well and water healthy. I always say a little bit of maintenance regularly is the best and results in the least number of problems. We of ten see people who don’t do any maintenance over winter and then when the warmer weather returns, they often have to deal with major issues such as a green pool, equipment failures or filtration issues, which can be costly. At a minimum getting the water tested on a monthly cycle will mean only putting in small amounts to keep the pool balanced safely and healthy.
What are your tips for maintaining a pool this winter?
Come in store to get a free water test and turn down the chlorine production as the demand for chlorine is decreased due to the cooler water temperature. If chlorine levels are not adjusted this can cause damage to pool surfaces, clean ers that are left in the pool and blankets, which can all be destroyed by high chlorine levels.
What is your favourite thing about the Jimboomba area?
We love the rural area along with the country feel of the shops and the markets, the people and the (lack of) traffic!
What's a little-known fact about you?
I desire the time to learn and get into Perma culture to create my own food gardens and be more self-sufficient.
For more information about Poolwerx Jimboomba or to learn more about their services, visit in-store at the Jimboomba Junction Shopping Centre or call (07) 5646 5966 to speak to one of their friendly staff.
“
I don’t want to do this activity because it’s too hard, I don’t understand, and it’s a waste of my time; It’s not helping me; I’d rather be doing something else!”
Sadly, these are familiar statements we often hear in learning environments around the world. However, you would think, after centuries of recorded history that we would have enough information and evidence by now about “The most effective ways people learn” for education institutions to be seeing excellent results amongst their students. Unfortunately, today, what we are seeing and hearing amongst students from prep to university is underachievement, disengagement and confusion.
To really enjoy learning something, the participant needs certain ingredients: time, connection to the activity, and a teacher, encourager and mentor who not only is knowledgeable in the field of study being taught, but more importantly, values the participant more than the activity itself.
Students learn best when they have time to enjoy and complete activities. Understanding and interacting meaningfully with these tasks, the participant will be able to enjoy engaging with their learning and connecting it with their current skills and knowledge. This
learning success is further enhanced when the importance of the learner as a person, is valued, nurtured and prioritized more than the activity itself. The final ingredient needed to enhance the love of learning is a knowledgeable, well-supported, enthusiastic teacher, encourager and mentor.
Without these essential ingredients, the love of learning is lost and every learning endeavour turns to failure. However, a learning environment that treasures these ingredients, looks like this: students working together and participating with excitement and joy; and it sounds like this:
“I want to do this activity because it’s interesting and helpful. I understand what we are doing. I want to finish. I’m definitely adding to my knowledge and skills, and I am enjoying contributing and helping others too. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else! I understand how to learn. I love learning!”
Emmaus College’s purpose and mission flows from our Christian heritage and partnership between the Anglican, Uniting, Catholic and Lutheran churches. Our motto is “Walking With Christ” and at Emmaus that means a lot. It is known to the students, parents and the wider community and it is a very powerful ethos that underpins our College.
Emmaus is a vibrant enterprise with a warm, caring and welcoming atmosphere. The College embraces change through the energy and verve of teachers, students and parents, all working together to maximise student learning.
This year we celebrate our 20 years as a College. We are very excited to have reached this milestone as the College began in 2002 with 86 students and now has grown to 1550 students from Prep to Year 12.
This year we have a particular focus on inspiring learning by providing meaningful and relevant learning experiences that are connected to the lives of young people. It is our belief that if students see value in learning they will flourish and become professional learners in this ever-changing world.
In this way, 2022 at Emmaus will help students with their personal quest of developing new
knowledge and skills, greater self-confidence, a personal and national identity, and an understanding of their role in a globalised world. This is achieved through well-crafted academic, sporting, spiritual and cultural programs whose success is dependent upon positive relationships that connect students with each other, their families and their teachers.
All are invited to our next Open Morning on Wednesday 10th August 2022 from 9.00am to 10.30am (Brisbane Show Holiday). You must register to attend on 5547 9990.
Families are encouraged to lodge enrolment applications now for Prep and Year 7 2024 and 2025.

Camping in Queensland has always been quite a popular hobby for many generations, varying from beaches around Queensland’s picturesque coastlines to the rocky mountains of the scenic rim and many more.
One of the wonderful things about camping is that it is so accessible to everyone. If you’re a keen first-timer there are a few things that you will need to get started.
Accommodation:
Starting of course with accommodation. The classic camper will always go for a tent; however, many contemporary varieties are stemming from the classic, which opens the camping experience up to many more people. Such as a camper trailer, caravan or for the real “upper class”, ‘glamping’.
Destination:
Your chosen destination will rely heavily on your form of ‘accommodation’. For example, if you have a tent your options for a site are far LESS limited. However, you must still keep in mind the toileting situation (when you gotta go, you gotta go, so it’s important to have a public or portable toilet in the vicinity).
If you are taking a camper trailer (provided you have an adequate vehicle to tow the trailer) you must try to find places that have easily accessible sites to enter with the extra towing weight. Caravans, on the other hand, are far MORE limited due to their size and weight which can make it harder to access some sites. In addition, many camping areas (national parks/4x4 parks/camping grounds) may not allow such vehicles.
Overall, when finalising your site selection, finding an open, flat area will be the best for your experience.
Everyone loves their sleep. There is nothing worse than an uncomfortable mattress to reside on at the end of the day. The weather and seasons will impact your experience, so a comfortable and warm bed will be crucial.
Some general bedding options are blow-up mattresses, stretchers and self-inflating roll-out mats. Good brands include Wanderer, Kings and Dune.
Many people just use bedding off of their beds at home with additional blankets if required.
Food: At the end of the day, food is a critical part of any trip. Some places may offer public kitchen spaces while others may not. If this is the case, then there are a few essentials that are typically used. These include eskies or car fridges to keep meat and other perishables cold, as well as barbecues or portable gas burners.
These examples are a good start if you are just a beginner or if you’re sleeping in tents and don’t have a camper trailer or caravan. Caravans offer different ranges of items such as bigger fridges and ovens.
next page..
When deciding what food to bring, canned food is a simple but handy option; not only does it have a longer shelf life it also is much easier to store.
Reusable plastic plates and old cutlery from home are the best things to bring for eating and cooking. This goes for cooking utensils also.
Cutlery/Table + Seating: Being comfortable on your trip is critical, especially after a long day of exploring. That is where a comfortable chair is vital. My preference for the chair is the ‘Wanderer moon chair’, which you can buy from BCF. Some good brand of chairs includes Wanderer, Oz trail and Kings.
Fold-out tables are also a highly recommended item which can also be bought from places like BCF, Anaconda and Bunnings. Some good brands of tables include Wanderer, Oz trail and Kings.
Places:
Some camping locations are dependent on the seasons but are still fun either way. Here are a few great locations to visit even in the winter months: Scenic Rim Lake Wivenhoe Camp Undulla Farm stays such as Lake Haigslea farm

Abrighter tomorrow awaits the City of Logan as Logan City Council builds on recent achievements in its 2022/2023 Budget, which was delivered today.
The record $1.014 billion ‘Building on today for a brighter tomorrow’ budget celebrates the positive attributes residents love about the city – a city that is smart, active, safe, green and growing.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said Council was leading the way in South East Queensland by delivering critical infrastructure and quality services to the community.
“We enjoy something special in the City of Logan,” Councillor Power said.
“Where else can you enjoy urban and rural lifestyles, first-class facilities and a caring and connected community?
“Our city is affirming its reputation as for ward-thinking and ambitious. We are not afraid to chase greatness.
“Council is ahead of the game with recent investments in state-of-the-art technology to turn sewage into energy and fertiliser, as well as the new Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct.
“Our business community is also becoming more innovative and entrepreneurial with emerging industries choosing to move to Logan for our ideal location and ready and reliable workforce.
“When we build on what we’ve already achieved, we can create a brighter future for coming generations, and that’s what today’s budget delivers.”
The 2022/2023 Budget invests in grassroots sport, the environment, innovation and infrastructure.
This includes:
• $38 million over five years to improve facilities at local sports clubs, with ongoing funding after that
• $9 million towards building an advanced recycling facility at Browns Plains in partnership with Ipswich and Redland councils
• Ongoing investment to develop the skills of young entrepreneurs
• $224.7 million in essential road and water infrastructure for a rapidly growing population.
As this year’s budget was prepared, Cr Power said his fellow Councillors recognised the value of investing money in programs that bring longterm success to the city.
“We’ve really considered where we should allo cate money so that it doesn’t just benefit people over the next 12 months,” he said.
“By planning towards how we want our city to look in the next five to 10 years, we’ve identified funding allocations that will improve quality of life and create a brighter tomorrow.”
Governance Chair, Deputy Mayor Natalie Will cocks, said Council continues to deliver an array of services to the community with efficiency, despite costs increasing.
“This year, we’ve seen the Brisbane CPI increase by 6 per cent in a year to the end of March, and everyone is feeling the impacts of higher fuel prices, including us.
“Additionally, the cost of materials for construc tion is through the roof, and we wear those costs when delivering infrastructure for the city.
“Council seeks alternative funding sources wherever possible, including grants from other levels of government, so we can keep rate rises to a minimum.
“Whether you visit our libraries, aquatic or sports centres, one of our many parks, play sport, turn on a tap, have a furry friend, put rubbish in your wheelie bin, visit a waste and recycling facility or drive on our roads, you are using facilities and services that need to be funded.
“Council staff deliver these services with a smile and are committed to the well-being of our community.
“We are proud of what we’re announcing in today’s budget, and I am proud of what we are delivering.
“And I thank my fellow Councillors and the Council staff who’ve worked hard behind the scenes for their diligence, support and advice.”
Key numbers from this year’s budget include:
• A 2.49 per cent bottom line increase for rate payers on the minimum general rate – $70.30 a year, or $1.35 a week (excludes state bulk water charge)
• A 4.29 per cent increase to the annual pen sioner remission, providing $379.20 for those on a full pension and $189.60 for a part-pension
