In today's competitive market, small businesses often consider adopting a cheap, low-cost strategy to attract customers and gain a foothold in the industry. However, relying solely on low pricing can have detrimental effects on your business. The importance of branding impressions, product value, and pricing margins for long-term profitability.

The more you focus on the value of your product or service, the less important the price becomes.

Building Branding Impressions: Focusing solely on offering the lowest price can dilute your brand image, making you appear as a low-quality, discount provider. Investing in a strong brand identity establishes credibility, trust, and loyalty among your target audience. Prioritising branding impressions helps differentiate your business, attract quality customers, and justify higher prices.

Product Value: Price is important, but it is not the sole determining factor for customers. By solely competing on price, you risk neglecting the unique value your products or services offer. Emphasise the benefits and selling points that set your offerings apart from cheaper alternatives. Highlight product quality, durability, convenience, and any added value that justifies a higher price point. Consider the real value your product or service provides to the customer.

Pricing Margin and Profitability: While cutting prices may increase sales volume initially, it can have adverse effects on your bottom line. Low-profit margins make it difficult to sustain and grow your business in the long run. Ensure your pricing strategy includes adequate margins to cover operational costs,

invest in marketing efforts, and generate sustainable revenue. Analyse your cost structure, value proposition, and target market to set competitive yet profitable pricing strategies.

4.

Perceived Quality and Customer

Perception: The price of a product or service often influences customers' perception of its quality. Setting significantly lower prices than competitors may raise doubts about the value and reliability of your offerings. By strategically pricing your products or services, you can convey a sense of quality, expertise, and value. This approach attracts customers who are willing to pay for a superior experience.

While low pricing may initially attract customers, small businesses must recognise the potential drawbacks. Relying solely on cheap pricing undervalues your brand, products, and services, risking long-term profitability. Instead, focus on building a strong brand, emphasising product value, and setting appropriate pricing margins. Find a balance between attracting customers and maintaining a sustainable business model. By doing so, your small business can thrive in a competitive marketplace, offering quality products or services that customers are willing to pay a fair price for.

Need a discussion about your price pick up the phone and talk to Helen.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF MINIATURE HORSES

We love our therapy dogs and emotional support animals. Some of you might have one (or multiple)! Using animals to help us, both emotionally and physically, is nothing new. Using horses in therapy is not a new concept either. And it’s been gaining popularity in recent years.

Let’s start with a very brief history…

In Ancient Greece, horses were used to treat people with emotional and psychological problems. They also used horses to help those with physical disabilities and injuries.

The Healing Power of Miniature Horses:

Mindfulness and Meditation: Miniature horses create a serene and peaceful environment, enabling individuals to practise mindfulness and meditation. Their gentle presence encourages focus on the present moment, enhancing selfawareness and emotional regulation.

Emotional Connection: Miniature horses possess an innate ability to establish emotional bonds with humans. Interacting with these gentle creatures promotes feelings of trust,

empathy, and companionship, contributing to emotional healing and personal growth.

Non-Verbal Communication: Horses communicate primarily through non-verbal cues, heightening individuals' awareness of their own non-verbal expressions and emotions. This increased sensitivity fosters improved self-regulation and social interactions.

Sensory Engagement: Engaging with miniature horses involves various senses, such as touch, sight, and hearing. These sensory experiences deepen the therapeutic process, establishing a stronger mind-body connection and grounding individuals in the present moment.

Self-Reflection and Growth: Working with miniature horses provides opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. Activities like problem-solving, leading, or caring for the horses nurture resilience, assertiveness, and a sense of accomplishment.

DOES YOUR DOG HAVE SEPARATION ANXIETY?

Does your dog exhibit signs of distress when you leave the house? Barking, destructive behaviour, or attempts to escape? These behaviours may be indicators of separation anxiety, a common condition that affects many dogs. Understanding and managing your furry friend's distress is important, so let's explore the causes of separation anxiety and provide strategies to alleviate their anxiety.

Separation anxiety occurs when dogs become excessively attached to their owners, leading to heightened stress levels when left alone. This condition is often observed in dogs that have been rehomed or have experienced life in a shelter, where they may have gone through periods of instability or abandonment. Older dogs may also exhibit anxiety due to underlying

medical issues, so it's essential to schedule a veterinary check-up to rule out any potential health concerns.

Managing separation anxiety requires a multi-faceted approach. Behaviour modification, exercise, training, and the use of calming remedies can be effective strategies. Behaviour modification techniques involve gradually acclimatising your dog to being alone by practising short departures and rewarding calm behaviour. This helps them build confidence and reduces anxiety over time. Exercise plays a crucial role in managing separation anxiety as it helps to tire out your dog, making them less likely to engage in destructive behaviours or experience heightened anxiety. Regular training sessions can also provide mental stimulation and reinforce positive behaviours, giving your dog a sense of structure and security.

Calming remedies such as nutritional supplements, and herbal remedies can be used in conjunction with behaviour modification techniques to alleviate anxiety. However, it's important to consult with your veterinarian before introducing any supplements or remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your dog's specific needs.

Recognising signs of stress when you are away is crucial in managing separation anxiety. Your dog may constantly seek your presence and exhibit excessive excitement upon your return. Common indicators of anxiety during your departure routine include panting, crying, shaking, or pacing. Understanding these signs can help you tailor your approach and provide the necessary support.

It's worth noting that over-dependence on humans is a result of years of domestication. Treating dogs as our children can foster their dependence on us, hindering their natural development of independence. While it's important to provide love and care for our dogs, encouraging their independence through training and gradually increasing their alone time can be beneficial.

Finding a solution to separation anxiety takes time and effort. Consulting with your veterinarian is the first step to rule out any underlying health issues and obtain professional guidance. They may recommend working with a specialist animal behaviourist who can develop a personalised plan based on your dog's specific needs.

Creating a safe and comfortable environment is vital in managing separation anxiety. Auditory stimulation, such as leaving talkback radio or classical music on at a low volume, can help soothe your dog. Providing a positive distraction, such as a treat-releasing toy or puzzle, can occupy your dog's time and help them associate positive experiences with being alone.

Remember that managing separation anxiety requires patience and a tailored approach. Seek professional help when needed, and understand that building a harmonious relationship with your dog is worth the investment of time and effort. With consistent training, gradual exposure to alone time, and a supportive environment, you can help your furry friend feel more secure and confident when you're away.

COUNCIL PUSHES FOR BETTER INTERNET

Upgraded internet on the way for some Logan properties

Improved broadband infrastructure is on the way for Logan Reserve and Chambers Flat as Logan City Council pushes to improve digital infrastructure and connectivity in the city.

The $2.4 million project will upgrade existing broadband connections to high-speed Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) at more than 350 properties over the next 12 to 18 months and lay the foundation for further upgrades in the area.

It is one of the key outcomes of the City of Logan Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Program, which has been supported by a grant from the Queensland Government.

Council established the program in 2021 to ensure residents can access next-generation telecommunications services required to support increased demands from traditional and future industries and a rapidly growing population.

Economic Development Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said Council had taken the lead in advocating for better services on behalf of residents and businesses, despite telecommunications not being a local government responsibility.

“Reliable internet isn’t a convenience anymore; it’s a necessity – both for our residents’ quality of life and for our businesses to compete globally,” Cr Raven said.

“Our Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Program is built on an evidence-based business case, which has been endorsed by the Queensland Government.

“It’s a Queensland-first approach to look at the gaps across the city so we can provide clear data to ask those responsible to fund the necessary improvements.”

Cr Raven said the business case had identified a priority project to improve internet access for properties currently using older technology.

“We have the funds to kickstart this immediately in Chambers Flat and Logan Reserve but are playing a long game to attract more funding and/or commitments from other levels of government and the telcos to further uplift the network over the next decade,” he said.

Division 8 Councillor Jacob Heremaia said the infrastructure upgrades were great for local residents.

“More and more people are working from home and using the internet for essential everyday business needs,” Cr Heremaia said.

“I encourage residents in the project zone to keep an eye out for information in their mailbox

from Council and the contractor for project information.”

Council has also investigated the opportunity to facilitate the design and construction of a worldclass multifunctional data centre in the City of Logan, and is now engaging with public and private industry players to progress it.

The multifunctional data centre will enhance existing and future business capabilities and revolutionise advanced technologies within the city to create jobs and new economic opportunities.

The City of Logan Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Program was developed with the support of the Queensland Government.

It was also endorsed as a key priority in the City of Logan Advocacy Strategy 2021-2024.

State Minister for Digital Services Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was pleased to have supported Logan City Council with a $2.5 million investment for this and other projects.

“This investment will support more households and local businesses in the Logan City Council area,” Minister Bailey said.

RIDING BEYOND BOUNDARIES

The kids who come to ride horses here may never have liked sport. Perhaps they are more used to clinging to their carers rather than venturing out.

But when I visited the Crowson Park RDA, the local Riding for the Disabled facility at Greenbank Logan, you can see the kids with disabilities blossom. I have no idea how it works, but for some reason it's just brought kids to life. I am unsure what these kids are like with other sports, but what I witness is that :

"Here, kids grow in smiles and confidence ... I don't know how it works, but it just does."

On the morning I visited the centre, there were about 10 regular riders at the Crowson Park Riding for the Disabled, supported by three experienced coaches, patient horses, and dozens of volunteers.

Riding for the Disabled was founded in Queensland in 1985, expanding into other states offering riding lessons and therapeutic exposure to horses for children and people with disabilities.

Now, the volunteer organisation has 17 centres in Queensland and dozens more nationally.

Horse and rider

At Crowson Park, the centre has well divided riding areas; the main arena, bushland & tracks with five horses and many volunteers putting their time into helping people with disabilities grow through riding lessons each week.

It is found that, when we sit on a horse, and a horse walks underneath us, it creates in our pelvis and our torso exactly the same movement as when we walk on our own two feet, so for riders who find walking very difficult, impossible or really tiring, horse riding can recreate that walking experience.

And for riders who struggle with communication issues, the horses are never pushing for an answer, so they can take as much time as they need.

Have a little spare time or would like to take on a volunteer role for a worthwhile cause? Visit our website: qldguides.com or contact Crowson Park RDA Direct on : 0436 341 239

How 'incredible' horses and volunteers help people with disabilities develop skills and confidence for life!

Much like its neighbouring areas in Southern Queensland, Stanthorpe thrives with wineries, breweries, and an abundance of fresh farm produce, boasting delightful treats such as fresh truffles and delectable cheese. Located 800m above sea level, Stanthorpe is one of the coldest towns in Queensland, making it the perfect climate for vineyards.

Moreover, the area is home to over 50 vineyards scattered throughout its picturesque landscape. Visitors can cherry-pick their preferred wineries to explore or embark

on a self-guided bicycle tour to immerse themselves in the experience.

On the outskirts of town, Girraween National Park and Bald Rock National Park beckon adventurers with their captivating allure. With a gift store you’ll definitely want to visit on the way out, stock up on supplies of truffle oil and truffle honey that beg to be drizzled over the cheese.

Stanthorpe Cheese

Stanthorpe Cheese factory is another worthy visit. Who doesn’t love cheese to compliment a platter and a beverage any day of the week? The cheeses here are made to traditional recipes that taste like real cheese straight from the farm! In the tasting room, you can sample a wide range of cheeses as well as chilli sauce, relishes, chutneys, balsamic vinegar and more. When you’ve found what you like, stock up for later and make yourself an incredible afternoon picnic accompanied by local wine.

THE RIGHT WAY TO USE RETINOL THIS WINTER

Retinol, hailed as the "gold standard of anti-ageing," is a powerhouse ingredient for your skin. However, during winter, some people hesitate to use retinol due to concerns about potential skin damage. Fear not! With the right approach, you can incorporate retinol into your winter skincare routine without harming your skin.

Start slowly, especially if you're new to retinol or have sensitive skin. Begin with a low concentration and gradually increase usage, as winter makes the skin more prone to dryness and sensitivity.

Hydration is key. Ensure your skin is wellmoisturised before applying retinol. Look for a nourishing moisturiser with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. This combats winter dryness and creates a protective barrier.

Gentleness is paramount. Opt for a mild cleanser that won't strip your skin of natural oils, as winter weather already causes dryness. Harsh cleansers worsen the problem and make retinol use challenging.

Boost your routine with a hydrating serum. Serums containing hyaluronic acid or niacinamide provide an extra layer of hydration, replenishing moisture and soothing the skin.

Don't forget sunscreen. Even in winter, harmful UV rays reach your skin. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 as the final step in your morning routine to protect your skin from sun damage.

Consider buffering, also know as retinol sandwiching, if needed. If your skin is sensitive or prone to dryness, apply moisturiser before and after retinol to minimise potential irritation. Note that buffering may reduce retinol's effectiveness.

Opt for richer formulations. Cream-based or oil-based retinol products provide additional moisture and nourishment during the dry winter months.

Listen to your skin. If excessive dryness, irritation, or sensitivity occurs despite your efforts, take a short break from retinol. Let your skin recover before reintroducing it or explore milder alternatives.

Remember, consult a dermatologist for personalised advice based on your specific skin type and concerns.

RAIL TRAIL PRELIMINARY DESIGN ENDORSED

Community concerns addressed in Rail Trail design

Extensive community feedback, including requests for fencing, have been included in preliminary designs for the proposed Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail.

Electronic gates, safety cameras, fencing and screening vegetation are among the added design elements after Logan City Council undertook a range of engagement activities – online and in-person – with concerned residents.

The engagement and input was beneficial in informing the preliminary design.

The 11.5km trail will feature three surfaces –concrete, asphalt and gravel – to accommodate walking, jogging, cycling and horse riding.

The 4km sealed section and gentle grades from Bethania Station to Dairy Creek Road will provide access for users of all abilities.

While most timber bridges were found to be significantly deteriorated by age and weather, the project will look for opportunities to pay respect to the corridor’s historical links when designing new crossings at various locations.

Additional features of the preliminary design include:

• Feature planting at key points such as Bethania Train Station, Logan River Lookout and Dairy Creek Road

• Seating, shelters, water bubblers and bins, including a dog waste bag dispenser

• Bike and horse trailer parking at the Dairy Creek Road trail head

The route will link with the popular Logan Village to Yarrabilba Rail Trail opened by Council in 2021.

It is envisaged that the Rail Trail could eventually be extended to Jimboomba and Beaudesert and become a major regional tourism attraction.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said there would be recreational and economic benefits from the Rail Trail.

“This will be a fantastic drawcard for our city and provide opportunities for everyone to get out an enjoy our special open spaces and river outlooks,” Cr Power said.

“It was important we listened to the community in the planning stage, and I am pleased with the preliminary design that has been developed based on that important feedback.”

Division 4 Councillor Laurie Koranski and the Mayor have written to local residents to thank them for their input to the project.

Cr Koranski said Council had consulted extensively with the local community and a range of other stakeholders, including cycling and

horse-riding groups, before finalising the Rail Trail design.

“I understand Council has undertaken more community engagement on this project than just about any roads project in its history,” Cr Koranski said.

“We have listened to what the community wanted on this, and that’s why we have included important elements to the design such as fencing, gates and more safety cameras near residential areas.”

The community will soon get a further opportunity to see the proposed preliminary design and provide feedback before construction, which is expected to begin late next year.

A Have Your Say survey last year indicated strong support for the trail, with more than 70 per cent of respondents saying they would use it.

More information on the preliminary design is available on the project page on Council’s website – logan.qld.gov.au/bethania-loganvillage-rail-trail

World Wide Web, 12, horse, a pale of water, brown, Russia, crash, stairs, the speed of a computer mouse, frogs, 8, Margaret Mitchell, Polytetrafluoroethene also known as Teflon

You're in a chatty mood and enjoy making contact with a wide range of people (but then, you usually are). It's a great opportunity to improve your relationship with a colleague, customer, or boss, simply by talking to them about whatever seems appropriate at the time. Lucky numbers are 33 and 66.

You're at your most dazzling and engaging right now, and your sparkling personality will attract plenty of admirers. You have a strong need to express yourself and prove that you're an individual in your own right. You don't want to be neatly filed away in a pigeonhole, and instead you want people to recognise that you're a unique human being.

The issues you're now dealing with won't always be on your mind. Eventually, they'll fade into distant memories. Even though life always brings challenges to deal with, in the nottoo-distant future your concerns will be less time-consuming. You're just re-examining things that need to be re-examined.

Maybe it's a reaction to the gloom of the past couple of days, but you're feeling restless and easily bored. Ideally, you should abandon at least part of your usual routine and do something radically different instead. Not only will this make you feel more lively, it will also bring you into contact with fresh ideas and new developments.

Put zest and energy into the day's activities, especially if they involve rushing around from one place to another, or keeping up with your partner. Enjoy being busy and productive; you'll be amazed at how much you manage to get done. In fact, whenever the pace slackens you'll start to feel restless and bored, wondering what you can do next. Lucky numbers are 9 and 17.

If you're concerned about the state of your finances, work hard to make them as healthy as possible. However, guard against your tendency to place too much emphasis on the material side of life, telling yourself that what you own is more important than who you are. This is your time, so be ready for luck from unexpected places.

Gather some of your nearest and dearest around you today, because it will do you good to spend time with them. Cook them a meal or just have a chat over a cuppa. You're in a reflective mood and your thoughts will soon wander to the past. You might even be tempted to get out some old mementos.

A certain person needs plenty of love and affection today otherwise they'll find other ways to get themselves noticed. This won't be very serious or problematic, but it might waste valuable time that you would rather have spent on other things. It could also make you feel rather guilty that you didn't give them what they wanted in the first place. Lucky numbers are 22 and 7.

This is a terrific day for embarking on a new routine or for altering your work schedule because the changes will inspire and excite you. If you're beginning a new job today, it's likely to bring you a few surprises along the way but it will also encourage you to think for yourself and to have the courage of your own convictions.

Someone may want to tick you off about something or tell you about some of the injustices of the world, but you'll soon decide that a little of this goes a long way. Try to save the situation by appealing to their sense of humour, although this doesn't mean ridiculing or making fun of their opinions.

Relationships are intense and highlycharged today, and you feel a great deal of love and affection towards the special people in your life. However, if you can't express this you'll feel cheated, and this frustration needs an outlet for all that pent-up emotion. Put it to constructive use, rather than waste it on a hissy fit or jealous tantrum.

It's a very sociable day, with plenty of opportunities to catch up on the latest gossip. Why not get in touch with a friend on the spur of the moment and suggest meeting up? This is also a good day for taking part in a discussion because you'll find it easy to voice your opinions. Lucky numbers are 6 and 12.

A BEACON OF

WHEN WE MET TINA

Tina, a proud owner of Hello World Travel Rochedale has been serving the local community well before we started publishing this magazine, two and a half years ago.

I can vividly recall her infectious and welcoming smile when I walked into her business looking for potential local business to advertise in our 2nd issue of the Logan City Guide.

At that time, I was curious to know how and why she managed to keep her business open amidst the challenging circumstances. Moreover, I wondered how she could afford to maintain such a radiant smile.

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded and countries started closing their borders one after another during the initial months, the impact on travel businesses was immediate and severe. Holidays abroad became untenable, and the travel industry was one of the hardest-hit sectors.

PARTNERS IN ADVERSITY

As much as I wanted to help at the time of our first meeting, we needed local businesses to advertise in our magazine to make our business float. The timing of starting a publication in many eyes, weren’t desirable but I was certain that businesses could not only survive but thrive in difficult circumstances. And Tina understood that! Tina coming on board gave us a glimpse of a brighter future ahead.

Tina has always been optimistic, even in the midst of uncertainty. She expressed her belief that while the industry would face short-term challenges and long-term systemic changes, there would also be opportunities. "The travel industry is resilient, and the demand for leisure travel is always there – perhaps even more so after this?!?," she remarked.

The ultimate proof of success is that Tina is a business woman who has continued trading throughout the pandemic, and as restrictions ease, her business is seeing strong demand from customers to travel internationally once more. Not that Tina assumes it’s back to business as usual, but she knows the travel industry is a very resilient one, indeed as she is, used to dealing with ups and downs, travel advice changes, natural disasters….

A NIGHT WITH THE STARS

At the time of writing this editorial, Tina and her business have been nominated for 'The 2023 Logan Business Distinction Awards,' which will take place on August 11th at the Logan Entertainment Centre. We extend our best wishes to her for this nomination and hope to witness her truly shine. She is not only writing her own business success story but also playing a role in shaping ours.
