THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF THE TOWN OF BEENLEIGH

The original location for the town of Beenleigh was surveyed by William Fryar in 1866 and the first town blocks were offered for sale on Friday 2 November of that year. This original surveyed area is indicated in the map below by the vertical arrow. On 1 October 1869, thirty local dignitaries, including Messrs. Davy and Gooding, petitioned the Minister for Lands to move the town to a new site. On 13 January 1870 the government approved the new site and reserved land for the new town of Beenleigh. This area is indicated on the map below by the horizontal arrow.

The Queensland Government Gazette advertised the first sale of land at the two sites of Beenleigh. The first was Vol. XII, No 117 of the Gazette published on Monday 1 October 1866 for a sale to take place on Friday 2 November, 1866. This was for land at the original site on the north bank of the Albert River. The second is a supplement to Vol. XL, No 78 published on Saturday 27 August, 1870 for a sale on Tuesday 27 September, 1870 for land at the new site.

More information and maps are available at The Beenleigh and District Historical Society.

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL BEENLEIGH’S 35TH CHARTER BIRTHDAY

And the 8th Stella Rickoff Silent Achievers Award

On the 27th of July 2023, Soroptimist International (SI) Beenleigh gathered to celebrate its 35th Charter Birthday, marking a significant milestone of service to the Beenleigh and Logan communities. This special occasion was combined with the presentation of the 8th Stella Rickoff Silent Achievers Award, honouring outstanding individuals who have made a remarkable impact on the local community.

For three and a half decades, the members of SI Beenleigh have been dedicated to uplifting and supporting their community and this anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the numerous contributions they have made over the years. The event was filled with heartfelt joy and camaraderie as attendees shared stories

Stella was a shining example of a Soroptimist, embodying kindness and generosity as she tirelessly worked to support those in need within the local community.

The 8th Stella Rickoff Silent Achievers Award recipient was Anne Wilson, a true inspiration to everyone present. Anne's passion for recycling, repurposing and giving to people in need showcased the profound impact that one person can make on the lives of others.

The event also highlighted the commendable contributions of Stacey Savage and Janee Hong, who were both nominated for their valuable efforts towards the community.

To support Anne in her charitable endeavors, she was presented with a $500 donation to be directed towards her charity of choice.

As the SI Beenleigh continues to build on their legacy of service, there is no doubt that their positive influence will continue to create a lasting difference in the years to come.

It was four ‘Dees’ that helped Neiva Ganaba reach her goal and bring her joy in 2023. A Dream, Determination, Dedication and a Drive to succeed. Things haven’t always been this way for Neiva, but she is a strong woman born in Sudan who relocated to Australia with her young son and wanted a better future for herself and her boy.

Neiva was working as a Primary School teacher in Africa but on arrival in Brisbane she worked in a meat factory as that was the easiest job to obtain. While in the meat factory Neiva started thinking about transitioning her skill-set to become a Support

Worker and called a number of Community Centre’s for assistance about getting a qualification for Aged Care but was offered ideas that were not suitable (“online courses that I would have to pay for, and usually no work placement arrangements…”). It happened to be a friend who asked Neiva if she knew of MultiLink and suggested she get in touch about their Cert. III Individual Support courses.

Neiva called-up and hasn’t looked back since! Neiva had TWO jobs before she had even completed her training with the excellent crew at Blue Stone Medical and her work placement in an Aged Care residential facility.

Neiva decided to take both job offers and is now receiving ‘rave reviews’ from her employers and clients. Neiva says, “The work is fantastic and it fits around my parenting. I feel so happy in this industry and I can’t thank MultiLink enough. Blue Stone Medical and MultiLink have done so much for me, no question.”

Neiva’s training came at NO COST to her thanks to Queensland Government funding and their Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects. MultiLink have run six such projects during 2023 in other fields such as warehousing, hospitality, childcare and automotive. If you or your organisation would like to find out more, contact MultiLink on the email below.

uthentic Food Outlet is now open serving vital support to those living in the local and greater Logan City community. This Food Outlet carries a wide range of groceries, meats and essential household items available at low cost.

“If you’re down on your luck or trying to save a buck” you should pay this place a visit.

The creator of Authentic Food Outlet, Melanie has been working closely with local schools and families who often find themselves facing hardship after a job loss or health issue. Her

team of volunteers, through their previously known ‘Food Pantry’ initiative, prepared food relief hampers and distributed them to Logan families when we first met her a couple of years ago. Melanie’s ambition to serve greater numbers of families in need drove her to create the Food Outlet, aiming to serve 700 families weekly, double what they have been able to help in the past.

Melani, said “with the variety of items now available through (Authentic) Food Outlet, families can experience real savings of up to

Authentic Food Outlet is part of their Community Care project that also operates Op Shop and the Coffee Shop which served up a satisfying cup with rich & strong aroma on the morning of our visit!

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS

Choosing the right school for your child is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. School open days are a great way to gather essential information to make an informed choice about your child's education. However, with the abundance of information provided during these events, it's crucial to ask the right questions to get a genuine understanding of the school's environment and offerings.

Here are some important questions to ask during school open days:

What is the child-to-teacher ratio?

What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?

What are your average class sizes?

How do you communicate students’ academic growth to parents? How is this tracked?

How much homework do students have? What is the school’s philosophy/approach to homework?

How does the school support under- and over-achieving students?

What is the School's Approach to Technology in Education?

Do you offer before and after school care?

How are students supported to make important decisions about their education?

When attending school open days and asking important questions, it's crucial to remember that the decision is not just about finding the right school for yourself but, more importantly, for your child. Each child is unique, so involve them in the process, consider their needs, interests, and comfort, and seek a nurturing environment that fosters their growth both academically and personally. A collaborative effort between parents, students, and educators will lead to a well-rounded choice, laying the foundation for a positive and fulfilling educational journey.

You'll only receive what you're prepared to give. It's about reciprocation, especially in your most personal relationships. You're primarily concerned with your self-image. That should be the last thing on your mind. Try to stand in the other person's shoes to gain a more compassionate insight into their feelings.

The overly cautious vibe may well undermine your sense of confidence, especially when it comes to very recent choices, decisions or new directions. Something that you may have settled on could provoke second thoughts. Give this matter plenty of time; don't backtrack just yet!

This is a super day for getting on with your work. You're in exactly the right mood for it, especially if you're writing letters, making phone calls or attending meetings. This is also a good opportunity for getting to know a colleague or customer better, so maybe you should ask them out for a drink or have a chat at lunch.

It's time to assess the progress of your long-term goals. However, you'll have to be honest with yourself, otherwise the whole thing will be a waste of effort. So evaluate all your current projects to see how they're progressing. If you realise that your heart is no longer in something, it will be far better to drop it now than to continue with it

Certain situations aren't nearly as cut and dried as you might like to think. So do your best not to fall into the trap of thinking that a delicate problem is easy to solve and getting angry when people fail to tackle it in the way you suggest. You may even have to eat your words at some point, which will give you mental indigestion.

This is a fantastic day for being spontaneous, especially if you're still feeling slightly rattled by what happened yesterday. So if someone suggests doing something on the spur of the moment, you'll be very tempted to say 'yes'. You might also be thrilled when you bump into the last person you were expecting to see.

You don't have as much energy as usual today, so pace yourself accordingly. If you try to force yourself to do too much you'll simply run out of stamina at some point and have to admit defeat, which will make you feel embarrassed and possibly even slightly depressed. So do yourself a favour and take it easy today.

Consider ways to improve your health. If you're well aware that there's more of you than there should be, or that you' re skimping on proper food at the moment, you know what to do. If you're concerned about strange symptoms, seek medical help as soon as possible so you can find out what's going on and take the appropriate action.

Your home life is looking really good today and you'll thoroughly enjoy being with your nearest and dearest whenever you get the chance. You might even decide to alter some of your arrangements so you can spend more time at home. It's a wonderful day for recharging your batteries in familiar and comforting settings.

You'll be happiest today if you can keep switching from one activity to another to stop yourself getting bored. You need plenty of variety right now, especially if it arrives in the form of lively loved ones and lots of social events. If you don't have anything exciting planned, start planning immediately.

You make a point of getting on well with whoever happens to be around today, even if they aren't one of your favourites. It's a particularly good day for talking to people you respect and admire, and you could glean some valuable information from them in the course of your conversation. You're happy to learn from their wisdom right now.

Cheer yourself up by spending time with friends and other likeminded people. If you can't see someone in the flesh, give them a ring or send them an e-mail. What's important now is to make contact with people who lift you out of yourself and give you a wider perspective on the world.
