VOTED AS THE BEST PARMI IN LOGAN: BEENLEIGH BOWLS CLUB

It’s one of the most loved, most popular and most ordered chicken recipes in the world — chicken parmigiana.

After a fierce battle among the 9 contenders and a total of 1,498 people voted, the results are now in. Beenleigh Bowls Club is crowned King of the Best Parmi in Logan.

The Beenleigh Bowls Club claimed 478, or 31.9 per cent, of the 1,498 votes counted with plenty of people ready to drive out of their way to get a juicy piece of cooked chicken, coated with

“Best parmi by far,” wrote Mel F

“Beenleigh Bowls Club best parmy, and it’s every day special too! Love the club! Aussie classic,” exclaimed Tom.

And from Dave: “Beenleigh bowls the VERY best parmi with toppings included in price. Yum and very very reasonable price!”

Snatching nearly 31.7 per cent of votes in the search for the best Parmi in Logan, the popular Eagle Tavern bolted into second place from a field of 9 contenders.

Coming in 3rd, by a narrow margin was Club Hotel Waterford. Honourable mentions go to Club Beenleigh who just missed out on a podi

FIVE FAKING FACTS

We’re quite passionate about doing fake properly and have five golden rules that ensure fake flower perfection – always.

Don’t buy cheap. Cheap fake flowers look fake and ….cheap. Good quality artificial flowers are an investment and whilst it might feel like a pinch initially the total lifetime cost makes them a smart buy.

Mix it up. Just like a change is as good as a holiday for us, decor can instantly get a new lease on life with a simple change of location. Move your arrangements around the house, change vases and alternate between bouquets.

Keep it real. Feel free to slip in some fresh flowers and foliage for extra lusciousness when entertaining. Fresh foliage instantly balances the too perfect look of fake flowers when

grouped together. Don’t have a garden to pick from? Embrace neighborhood pruning. Twigs, leaves, berry branches and vine can instantly transform a few simple faux blooms.

Tweak it. Bend the stems, heads and leaves into more natural angles; don’t leave them in a uniform fan. Create angles and curves as mother nature herself does so beautifully. Don’t fret about traditional bouquet structure. Wildlooking, meadowy displays are far more homely and very en-trend.

Keep it fresh. Whilst our blooms are now made with modern fabrics that are far more dust resistant to the dust traps of yesteryear, they will, like any good accent item in the home, need to be kept clean. Avoid water and heavy handling with dry cloths. A regular dusting using your hairdryer on a low, cool setting will ensure they’re blooming perfect always.

DEVELOPING NEXT LEADERS

www.canterbury.qld.edu.au

DEVELOPING LOGAN’S LEADERS

Leadership is a skill for life. Positive and successful leadership encompasses a wide range of skills, attitudes, values and characteristics.

For each of us, some of these come more naturally than others and the combination is different for every individual. Leadership is not a fixed constant. You evolve your leadership style over time and adapt it to different circumstances.

Discover how Canterbury College’s School Captains for 2022, Kristina and Madisen-Jade are taking on their roles as leaders.

Hi, my name is Kristina, and I am one of Canterbury College’s School Captains. I first arrived at Canterbury in Year 7 and went to Marsden State School for my primary school years. I am Serbian Orthodox, and I love playing sports and reading.

My name is Madisen-Jade, and I, too, am one of Canterbury’s School Captains for 2022, a year in which our school has had two females dominate the School Captain roles. I am of Samoan descent and rep it proudly. I’m the eldest child of six, live in a household of nine and was born and raised within the boundaries of the place I call home, Logan City.

We can both agree that Canterbury College has helped shape us into the people we are today by providing us with many amazing opportunities to grow and develop our skills across various areas.

We’ve had numerous opportunities in both sports and academics to develop and

showcase our talents which we are incredibly grateful for. Canterbury College has strong well-being and academic support networks and everyone is willing to give a helping hand. We believe that is of significant importance in schools as it encourages us to be ourselves and to embrace our individuality.

To us, accepting these leadership roles meant somewhat taking the role of the older sister. Being the type of person others can come to and ask for help while being stern when things need to be done. It means being present when times are tough and being proactive in helping others aim for the best so we can achieve the best.

When we were both appointed to these roles, we both agreed that fostering relationships and building connections amongst the students was something we wanted as our main focus – creating that family bond. We hear a lot of different perspectives and get to know many different students, and we believe it’s one of the best things about being a School Captain.

One of the most exciting and rewarding parts is to interact and engage with students in other grades and make connections with younger students. The reason we wanted to be School Captain was to have the opportunity to make a difference, to help others understand that we’re more than just a school; we’re a family.

STELLA RICKOFF AWARD

Each year the Soroptimist Club of Beenleigh presents the Stella Rickoff Award to a woman in the Logan community who works to support and empower others.

After a record number of nominations, Anita Anderson was named the 2022 winner, receiving a $500 donation towards a charity of her choice.

Nominated by her friend Sharon, Anita has worked extensively among people experiencing homelessness and people leaving domestic and family violence situations, providing meals, clothing, books, furniture, and companionship.

Anita loves her work, and as Sharon puts it: "Anita saw a gap and wanted to give back. Anita has a big heart and receives pleasure and happiness from helping others less fortunate."

The award was presented by Gloria Thomson, daughter of the late Stella Rickoff. Gloria remarked that reading the nominations highlighted the areas of need in our community and how vitally important the role of the volunteer is, noting that “volunteers don’t

get paid and it’s not because they are worth nothing, but because they are priceless”.

Anita has selected her charity Touch of Hope to receive the $500 donation. Raffles on the evening also raised $800 for Safe Haven Community, an organisation that provides services and accommodation for women at risk of domestic violence.

2. Why did you start?

“I had free time on my hands and wanted to give back to the community, and most volunteer programs clashed with work hours or other commitments. After I started to teach my youngest to drive, a colleague who does BTC recommended the program and becoming a mentor. “

PCYC Braking the Cycle is our volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours.

Participants are matched with a specific volunteer from our driver mentor network and the aim is to provide the young people of our community with increased employment opportunities, community connections and driver education. Mentors provide encouragement and help young people improve their self esteem and develop positive road safety attitudes.

Our volunteers are the backbone of PCYC Braking the Cycle and without their work, day in and day out, this program could not be as successful as it has been.

Meet PCYC Beenleigh’s Braking the Cycle Volunteer of the year.

SELINA SALTER

How long have you been volunteering?

“I have been volunteering with BTC for just over a year.”

3. What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer mentor?

“I really enjoy meeting the participants and interacting with them. There is such a diverse range of personalities and I find it so interesting and enriching for me personally to engage with them.”

4. What would you tell other people thinking about becoming a volunteer Mentor?

“Do it! The PCYC staff are fantastic to deal with and it’s great to be able to get involved with the community and give something back. It’s so rewarding to watch the participants’ skills evolve and their confidence grow. Driving is something most of us do and it’s not hard to share this skill with others (especially if they’re not your own children!). You can give as little as an hour each week and everyone can spare an hour. It’s good knowing you helped someone achieve a skill that will stay with them for life.”

Would you like to support young people to learn to drive?

If so, we would love you to join our team of volunteer mentor drivers. For more information, please contact Sarah Pitt on 0409 145 306. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Located along the outer skirts of the City of Logan, Mount Warren Park has a population of 5,791 people according to the 2016 census. Warren also had the Windaroo plantation to the south, originally taken up by J Pinwell. Two types of sugar were planted on the river flat, and 10 acres of cotton were planted up in the higher country.

TO MY DAD... WITH LOVE

To celebrate this Father's Day, we reached out to the local community and asked them to share beautiful memories of their fathers. Here are some of the entries we've received.

Me and My Dad

“My dad, Eiko James Iva, is my most formidable competitor, harshest critic and biggest supporter. He’s the person I strive to be like. He’s my benchmark in all I do. He’s one of the hardest working people I know, and it’s something I admire most about him. He’s the only voice I tend to hear in a roaring crowd during my games; he’s the face I look for in the audience when I speak at a lectern, and he’s the only person who can claim the title of my first ever best friend. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and while I may not see it at the moment, it pushes me to do the best I can. My greatest achievements in life are the things that make him and my mumma proud. We don’t share a very openly affectionate relationship, but I love him wholeheartedly. I get a lot of things wrong, and I know I’m not the perfect daughter but he loves me as if I was one. Happy Father’s Day, coach; I love you!”

TO MY DAD

By Lincoln, 3 years old.

“My dad has always been an amazing person in my life. Whether it be practising Volleyball in the backyard or helping me with my maths, we always find a way to make it fun and entertaining. I don’t think I can recall a day where he hasn’t been there for every sports match I have ever had, whether it be Tennis or Volleyball. He has always supported me through everything and has taught me so much that I am grateful for. I love all our jokes, and I don’t think there is a day when he doesn’t make me laugh. Volim te puno tata!”

SAY CHEERS TO QLD’S CRAFT BEER

Not so long ago, beer selection was pretty straightforward. Most people had a “brand” of beer they always drank and the local pub had a standard set of brews on tap that remained constant. These days, however, try going into a local bar or even a local bottle shop and not be overwhelmed by the number of choices available, many of which you have probably never heard of. We are now in the age of craft beer and it is a beautiful time for beer lovers.

Now that craft beer is more popular than ever, here are some of the best craft breweries in South East Queensland.

Madocke Beer Brewing Company

Located in Ashmore, an inner-city suburb of the Gold Coast is a local award-winning brewery serving up the taste of Belgium with an Aussie twist to locals. In 2016, owners and beer enthusiasts, Annelies, her husband, Jimmy and their 2 children, Noa and Elena migrated from Belgium to Australia to brew beer and open their own brewery. Initially launching their company from their garage, they quickly grew and started brewing commercially in 2018, before moving to their new location on the 1st of November 2021. So come and try one of the 16 beers they have on tap as well as the limited and seasonal releases and uncover the story behind every beer.

Slipstream Brewing Company

Discover the joy of pure flavour at Slipstream Brewing Company. Opened in 2017, Slipstream Brewing Co is a boutique brewery and tap room located in Yeerongpilly. Owners, Deale and Elisa Stanley-Hunt started Slipstream Brewing with a simple vision: to bring a taste of the US beer scene to Australia. Slipstream beers are brewed with nothing but pure flavour in mind, with many saying they have never had a bad beer from them. Their range is constantly evolving and is comprised of everything from Tropical Pale Ales to refreshing Lagers and exciting limited-release brews. So, sit back and relax as you enjoy some of the 20+ beers fresh from the back-of-house production rooms.

Straddie Brewing Co

Straddie Brewing Co began in 2020 with the dream of opening the first brewery on North Stradbroke Island. With COVID delays, owners Kylie Taylor and Troy Beavan with head brewer Andrew Sydes perfected their recipe on the mainland at Ballistic Brewery in Salisbury. Currently, they are taking the beer world by storm, winning a slew of awards at the 2022 Australian International Beer Awards. Their dream of opening the Straddie Brewery and taproom is nearly complete with construction underway on the Dunwich site expected to be open in Spring 2022.

Have you visited of these breweries and tried one of their beer? Share your experience with us via our Facebook page.

Born out of a love for North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) and great tasting beer, crafted for the enjoyment of Straddie-lovers, old and new.

We’re devoted to making fresh beer, full of flavour, inspired by place and island time. Brewery opening in Dunwich Spring 2022.

We are proud to introduce our Craft Beer Brewery at the Gold Coast in a true Belgian Style. Madocke Beer Brewed by Belgians.
