SELECTORS HOUSES IN THE BEENLEIGH DISTRICT ca. 1872

A'Selector', which is mentioned in the photograph caption below is a person who had been selected to receive government land for farming. A proclamation in the Queensland Government Gazette detailed the level of annual rent and the portions of land available for selection and the closing date and place for applications to be received. The minimum age for a selector was 16 years and the applicant had to be a natural-born British subject or naturalised British subject; companies could not apply.

This house with its supporting stumps to protect it from floods and termites shows the early use of a gabled roof over a four-roomed plan. The decorative bargeboard recalls the details on an American villa residence of the 1850s and 1860s. Beenleigh at the time was becoming a major commercial centre for the Logan and Albert district. Pretty cottages of this kind sat by the roadside approach to the town and these houses were surrounded by well attended gardens.1

Selection referred to 'free selection before survey' of crown land in some Australian colonies under land legislation introduced

in the 1860s. These acts were intended to encourage closer settlement, based on intensive agriculture, such as wheat-growing, rather than extensive agriculture, such as wool production. Selectors often came into conflict with squatters, who already occupied the land and often managed to circumvent the law.

The process of land selection in Queensland began in 1860 and continued under a series of land acts in subsequent years. The government thought that land was the colony’s greatest asset and prosperity of the colony would increase as the occupation of the land increased. Also, funds from land leases were the colony’s largest revenue earner.2

STRIKE A DEAL TO FRESHEN UP YOUR FRONTAGE

When every dollar counts, it can be hard for a local business to turn its renovation dreams into reality.

But that opportunity is now on offer for some City of Logan businesses, as part of Round 2 of Logan City Council’s Façade Improvement Program (FIP).

The funding initiative supports enterprising business owners, or tenants, seeking to boost their curb appeal and increase foot traffic.

In Round 2, businesses within and around Beenleigh, Logan Central, Meadowbrook and Springwood are eligible for funding support.

Council will also consider applications from businesses elsewhere in the city that support and contribute to its night-time economy.

Council’s recently endorsed Night Time Economy Strategy aims to provide more opportunities to enjoy a night out in the City of Logan by making it easier for businesses to attract and grow their after-hours clientele.

Economic Development Chair Councillor Jon Raven said Council was keen to see more of the city’s landmark and popular outlets dressed in their best.

“‘Dress for success’ is good advice for job seekers and for local businesses who want to project the best possible image to attract the customers they need,” Cr Raven said.

“This program is designed to support owners and operators from hospitality to health services and everything in between, who want to give their façade a facelift.”

Division 2 Councillor Teresa Lane said local businesses are the lifeblood of local communities.

“There is no shortage of creative, hardworking businesses that serve, supply and entertain our families every day,” Cr Lane said.

“It is important to back their efforts and to encourage more people to support the many reliable stores and service providers in their area.”

Logan City Tenpin, on Wembley Road in Logan Central, is now sporting a fresher external look after receiving funding in Round 1 of FIP.

Managing Director Bruce Morris said the program was the incentive the business needed to brighten up the alley, with customers already commenting on new colours.

“The place was looking a little bit tired and some of the signage was 20 years old so we thought it was a good opportunity,” Mr Morris said.

“You’ve got to keep on top of everything, we spend a lot of money inside the place, but probably not a lot on the outside and so it gave us the push along to do that.”

Council has increased the maximum amount of funding available through the FIP from $5000 to $10,000 per business. Council will provide $2 for every $1 spent by successful applicants towards their project cost.

More information on the program is available at Facade Improvement Program – Logan City Council.

Applications close on Friday, April 7.

JOIN THE SUSTAINABILITY MOVEMENT AT BEENLEIGH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE’S REPAIR CAFE

Do you hate to see perfectly good items end up in the trash just because they need a little love? The Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre has the solution, and it's a win-win for both sustainability and the community! Join them in celebrating the launch of their Repair Cafe on June 3rd, 2023.

The Repair Cafe is not your average repair shop - it's a hub for practical skills, creativity, and community building. Learning how to repair an item yourself is not only a great way to save money and help the environment, but you also gain a real sense of achievement and self-esteem as you apply a newly learned practical skill to fix your item. Volunteers with a variety of skillsets will work side-by-side with specialists to breathe new life into broken items. From electrical repair to sewing and textiles, from computer tech to furniture repair and woodworking, the Repair Cafe is seeking specialists in all areas.

"We believe in utilising practical skills and helping people see the value in repairing broken items rather than replacing them," says Anthony, Community Development Officer at Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre.

By repairing items, we reduce the need for new products and the resources required to make them. This saves energy, reduces harmful CO2 emissions, and helps the planet. The Repair Cafe is just one of the many sustainability initiatives taken on by the Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre, which has also installed two large solar systems and a community garden.

"The Repair Cafe is our latest step in supporting the Beenleigh community on their sustainability journey," says Tyahn, Community Support Officer.

Join the sustainability revolution and make a positive impact in the community by lending a hand at the Repair Cafe. The Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre is eager to hear from you and excited to see how the Repair Cafe will play a big role in achieving their goal of creating a better, more sustainable future.

For more information, contact Anthony and Tyahn by phone at 07 3287 2840 or by email at repaircafe@beenleigh.org.au. You can also visit repaircafe.org/en/ to learn more about the Repair Cafe movement.

COLE PORTER’S TONY WINNING

MUSICAL TAP DANCES INTO BEENLEIGH

ye aye captain! Cole Porter’s joyful musical Anything Goes sails into Phoenix Ensemble in Beenleigh every Friday and Saturday in March.

In this side splitting romp across the Atlantic, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes all destiny needs is a little help from a crew of singing sailors, tap dancing gangsters and some good old fashioned blackmail.

Playing leading lady Reno Sweeney, Jaime O’Donoghue said that Anything Goes was a frivolous and heart-warming show, where you never knew what was going to happen next.

“The comedy is so quick witted and perfectly timed, the romance is

beautiful and helps the audience root for the characters and the songs will be stuck in your head long after you leave the theatre,” she said.

Director Miranda Selwood said that Anything Goes was a classic for good reason. The story was fun-filled and zany, but the ingredients were all-too-familiar.

“I love the golden era musicals that came straight out of traditions of vaudeville; unapologetically entertaining escapism, a whole lot of heart, sequins and tap shoes, witty one liners and gaudy gags.

“While a lot of older shows have become dated, parts of Anything Goes have been adapted while preserving the charm and sincerity of the original.

“We’re bringing the tap-dancing spectacular of Anything Goes into the Tin Shed this March. There’s something quintessentially Broadway about tap dancing. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t feel uplifted by a tap-number. It must be magic!

“It’s big theatre in our intimate space in the showgrounds. This production will be so close you can touch it. Literally! You can even join us early for a drink at the on-stage bar.”

A live orchestra and cast made up of incredible local talent will breathe new life into Cole Porter’s sparkling score featuring classics like I Get A Kick Out of You, You’re the Top and the show stopping Anything Goes.

Musical Director Jacob Cavanough said that Anything Goes was a true testament to Porter’s writing brilliance and has certainly stood the test of time.

www.phoenixensemble.com.au | Fb: Phoenix Ensemble | IG: @phoenixensemble

“Cole Porter understood that great musical writing is the marriage, or perhaps love affair, of both great music and great words,” Mr Cavanough said, “he makes you think, hope, blush, feel and laugh until you're dizzily satisfied but left wanting more.

“He was a brilliant wordsmith and seemed to effortlessly write music with energy and character. He fused them together to tell wonderful yet wacky stories that plonk you straight into a world of his own invention; exotic yet strangely familiar.

“We have an incredible, hot nine-piece band of pure energy and talent playing the show and supporting our amazing cast. The score is a real joy and our band brings Porter’s music to life with all the nuance and mayhem it deserves,” he said.

Ms O’Donogue added that it was so special to work with such talented creatives to bring community theatre at its best to the heart of Beenleigh.

“The creative team have worked so hard on bringing their vision of Anything Goes to life and expressing their art in a way that is so thought out and so caring for their craft,” she said.

“We as the cast are so grateful to be able to present their hard work on Phoenix Ensemble’s stage.”

Ms Selwood agreed and said “we’re laughing a lot in rehearsals, and if we can bring even

half as much of the joy we feel to the audience each night, then this is entertainment not to be missed! I can’t wait to share, this, one of my favourite shows with audiences at Phoenix.”

Touted as the musical equivalent of a glass of champagne, Anything Goes will uplift and take you back to the Golden Age of high society from the comfort of your theatre seat.

Phoenix Ensemble operates out of a "tin shed" style theatre, but despite its humble exterior, and thanks to a melting pot of talented creatives offering their skills from all across South East Queensland, Phoenix has delivered first-rate entertainment in Beenleigh for 30 years.

If you would like to be involved with Phoenix Ensemble or want to keep up to date with their shows, follow them on Facebook: Phoenix Ensemble, Instagram @phoenixensemble or head to their website www.phoenixensemble.com.au.

BEENLEIGH

How Beenleigh's Sugar Plantation Shaped a Community and its People

In 1865, two brothers-in-law from England, Francis Gooding and John Davy, founded the Beenleigh plantation. Originally intended for the cultivation of cotton, the plantation quickly turned to sugarcane as a more profitable crop. Within a year, sugarcane had become the primary crop, and in 1869, Davy and Gooding built the Beenleigh Sugar Plantation.

The years that followed saw a surge in rum distilleries throughout the region, with 13 in operation throughout the colony of Queensland by 1876. In that same year, the Bailliere's Gazetteer described the township of Beenleigh as a provincial centre serving an area with nine sugar mills and three distilleries within a sixkilometre radius.

Despite the growth in production, overproduction became a problem. The surplus molasses produced was often dumped into

local rivers, causing environmental concerns. The construction of a distillery in Beenleigh in 1884 likely resulted from the decrease in sugar prices and overproduction. By 1885, the distillery had 9,877 gallons of rum on hand.

The Logan area, where many plantations had been established for transportation, was vulnerable to frost, disease, soil exhaustion, and flooding. A flood caused by the Albert River in 1887 destroyed the entire Davy and Gooding distillery, including a large stock of 8,000 gallons of rum. However, production resumed quickly after the purchase of distilling equipment from the Ageston Distillery.

In 1890, the Beenleigh Sugar Factory and distillery were separated. The distillery continued to flourish, and by the 1890s, milling had become more specialised due to

technological advancements. While many small plantations in the area closed during the recession, the Beenleigh distillery flourished, winning a diploma and gold medal at the International Exhibition in London in 1899. In addition to traditional rum, the distillery also produced a pineapple rum. By the early 20th century, Beenleigh had become a modern distillery. Today, the Beenleigh distillery is a focus of memory for many people who have worked there or whose forebears have worked there and it is closely associated with the identity of the area by the local community.

Rum on the river

The planting and cultivation of sugar cane in Queensland was paramount to a booming industry: the production of rum. In 1869 there was even a floating mill that produced and delivered rum to eager Queenslanders.

The SS Walrus had been an unassuming sailing ship purchased by James Stewart in 1869 with plans to convert it into a steamship, and much more.

It cruised up and down the Logan and Albert rivers, servicing the local plantations in the area, turning sugar into copious amounts of rum. From 1870 to 1871 the SS Walrus

produced approximately 53,000 litres of rum. In comparison to other stationary distilleries at the time, this amount was huge.

Unfortunately, in 1876 the SS Walrus came under the attention of local authorities and the Chief Inspector did not renew the licence. Instead, he recommended that a stationary distillery be established. After this, it is assumed that rum production recommenced, this time illegally.

In 1883, the SS Walrus was found beached on the banks of the Albert River. What happened to the vessel remains a mystery, but it is believed that Francis Gooding then purchased the still from the SS Walrus. Mr Gooding would eventually obtain a licence in 1884 for the Beenleigh Rum Distillery, which is a functioning distillery to this day.

POSTPARTUM CHALLENGES

Empowering Yourself with Knowledge and Support during the Postpartum Period

Congratulations on becoming a new mum! It’s an exciting and beautiful time, but it’s also a period of physical and emotional changes. Understanding and preparing for the changes can make the postpartum period less overwhelming. In this article, we will talk about the physical and emotional changes that new mums typically experience and ways to get support during this time.

Physical changes:

Your body has just gone through a tremendous transformation, and it needs time to heal. You may experience postpartum bleeding, sore nipples, and exhaustion. Postpartum bleeding is normal, and it usually lasts for two to six weeks after delivery. Sore nipples can occur during breastfeeding, but proper latching techniques and breast pumps can help alleviate

the pain. It’s essential to prioritise your physical needs, such as getting rest, eating well, and staying hydrated. It’s okay to ask for help from your partner, family, or friends. They can help you with household chores, cooking meals, and taking care of the baby so that you can get some much-needed rest.

Emotional changes:

It’s common for new mums to experience mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Many women experience what’s called the “baby blues,” which is a mild and short-lived condition that usually goes away after a week or two. However, some women may develop postpartum depression or anxiety, which can

last for several months or longer. Symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety include feeling sad, hopeless, having trouble bonding with your baby, or having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby. It’s crucial to seek help if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms. Talk to your healthcare provider or a mental health professional, who can provide you with the support and care you need.

Support groups:

In addition to seeking professional help, there are many support groups available for new mums. These groups provide a safe and supportive environment to connect with other women who are going through similar experiences. Support groups can be inperson or online, and they can be a great

“Chemical Free” Steam Fire Ant Nest Injection

Not a fan of having chemicals sprayed and injected on your property to manage Fire Ants?

Want a "CHEMICAL FREE" alternative?

1300MOZZIE "has that CHEMICAL FREE alternative!".

Contact 1300MOZZIE to investigate the use of our high pressure steam injection method to kill the Queen, the eggs and the colony.

We will mark the nests with little flags and then inject the marked nests with our ant nest injection spear, and pump the nest with high pressure steam from our steam trailer system.

The temperature of injection is approximately 120-150 degrees celsius, and will destroy the Queen, the ability to reproduce eggs for the new emergence and growth of a nest.

The result is effective, low cost and leaves your property with no CHEMICAL footprint that could impact other non-targeted insects, or leave

systemic residual traces of chemicals in and on the ground.

We are a private business, and we do charge for our service. To help explain what we charge for, we require to pay our labour and travel costs, the depreciation and service of our asset and equipment. The charge is relatively inexpensive at $200 per hour for two technicians, the steam trailer and the utility we use to tow it. But the cost is significantly cheaper, as we don't adjust for chemicals and only require a small fraction of add-on for the cost of fuel for the steam generator and pump, as well as our labour costs.

We can treat 12 nests per hour (1 nest every 5 minutes) depending on the location and size. We will also do the Government reporting for you once the job is completed. We will disturb the nest by turning over the soil after the steam treatment has been completed to ensure nest destruction. We can if no objection spread a granular bait after the treatment at no extra charge if there is a concern, but will require consent to do so.
