ecently the Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum received a donation of an Anzac Scarf.

The scarf is entitled: ‘Scarf - 'Souvenir of the Great World War', Gallipoli, circa 1915. It is by an unknown artist.

As can be seen in the photograph the scarf shows Australian troops at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 as the centrepiece, surrounded by the flags of the invading forces. Four unnamed warships are illustrated in the corners, while the Emden appears underneath the central panel with the title: ‘The scrap heap’ a view of the "Emden" after the fight with the "Sydney" off the Cocos Keeling islands.' (which occurred on 9 November 1914). Printed on the scarf is: 'A souvenir of the great world war and the glorious part played by Australia and New Zealand.’

The main illustration is entitled: ‘The landing of our gallant sons of empire on the Gallipoli Peninsular.’

A NEW FEATURE AT BEENLEIGH VILLAGE MUSEUM R

The framed scarf

World War 1 souvenirs like this scarf were produced in Egypt and England, often for the Australian soldier market. The troops bought the souvenirs and sent them home to their families, who often framed them or made them into cushion covers and other items. Some items were also exported to Australia and New Zealand and sold here. Depictions of the Gallipoli landing and the sinking of the German ship 'Emden' were popular subjects for the souvenirs. This scarf will be on display in the military section of the Harch Museumat the Village beginning in June.

The Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum is an open-air museum at Main Street, Beenleigh, City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. It preserves twenty buildings from Beenleigh's past which contain many collections related to the history of this district. 205 Main St, Beenleigh QLD 4207. Phone: (07) 3382 0608.

VALUE IN ART WHAT MAKES ART VALUABLE?

The definition of value in art is an ever-disputed topic in the art world as the elements of art value are extremely numerous and often highly subjective rather than empirical. Understanding this concept at the core of the art market is essential to all those who wish to take their first steps into the art world as an artist or a collector.

In helping the arts community in Logan city and beyond, Logan City Guides have teamed up with local talents & digital creator to showcase their artwork through online gallery. If you love art but want to see more than just what the galleries can show you, this will be the right place. This project will help expose you to a whole new world of artists that you never knew existed. Brick & mortar Art galleries can only show you so much!

Furthermore, this platform will give local & emerging artists to showcase their creativity, helping them connect with greater audiences locally, nationally and internationally!

Art plays an integral role in creating an atmosphere that is conducive to productivity and relaxation. From a vibrant colours of a painting on a wall, to the subtle textures of decorating shelves, art adds life and character to any space. Appreciating art can also be used as a tool for creativity and imagination, it helps us see things from a new perspective and encourages us to think differently.

Studies shows that having access to beautiful artwork in our daily lives has a positive effect on both our physical and psychological well being, reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Art provides us with a sense of purpose, connection and meaning. Allowing us to express ourselves in ways that words cannot.

We hope, through this arts initiative you can learn to create or invest in pieces that are meaningful to you, pieces that speak to who you are, your values, interests and passions. By adding art to your space you’re making it a reflection of yourself and creating an environment customised to your personality.

HOME OFFICE DEDUCTION CHANGES FOR YOUR 2023 TAX RETURN

We know that navigating the changes to the home office deduction rules can feel like trying to find your way through a maze. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has introduced new rules for the 2023 income year that can impact your tax return, and it’s important to understand how they work.

Here’s what you need to know:

New fixed rate per work hour

The fixed rate for home office expenses has increased from 52 cents to 67 cents per work hour. This means you can claim a deduction of 67 cents for every hour you work from home, for expenses such as internet and phone usage, electricity, gas, and stationery.

No shortcut method (80 cents) available from FY 2023

The ATO has removed the shortcut method for the 2023 income tax return, which means you can no longer claim a deduction of 80 cents per work hour for all home office expenses. Instead, you must use the fixed rate method of 67 cents per work hour.

Expenses covered by the fixed rate

The fixed rate covers the following expenses:

• Home and mobile internet or data expenses

• Mobile and home phone usage expenses

• Electricity and gas (energy expenses) for heating, cooling, and lighting

• Stationery and computer consumables, such as printer ink and paper

Expenses not covered by the fixed rate

The fixed rate does not cover the following expenses:

• Deduction for the work-related use of technology and office furniture such as chairs, desks, computers, bookshelves. Decline in value of assets can be claimed separately.

Record-keeping requirements

To claim the home office deduction, you must keep the following records:

• A record of the number of actual hours you work from home during the entire income year – for example, a timesheet, roster, diary, or other similar document. (No 1-month diary records to be accepted)

• A representative record of the total number of hours worked from home during the period from 1 July 2022 to 28 February 2023 – for example, any kind of record of the hours you worked from home for a particular period that you can apply to the whole 8-month period.

• A record of the total number of actual hours worked from home for the period 1 March 2023 to 30 June 2023.

Claiming mobile phone expenses

If you use your mobile phone for work purposes, you cannot claim it separately under the fixed rate method. Instead, you must use the actual cost method to calculate your deduction.

DOORS OPEN AT DEMONS’ NEW DEN

Waterford Demons in heaven at new home

Anew clubhouse has helped the Waterford Demons Rugby League Club get their 2023 season off to a flying start.

The revitalised Noffke Farm Park facility was officially opened on Sunday, May 28.

The new clubhouse has a club room, commercial kitchen, public amenities, outdoor viewing area, office, storeroom, gym and maintenance shed.

14 | Beenleigh Guide

The $1.825 million project was jointly funded by Logan City Council, the Division 6 Local Infrastructure Program and the Queensland Government.

Mayor Darren Power said Council was proud to support community sporting clubs with important facility upgrades.

“Our local sporting clubs are central in establishing active and healthy community,” Cr Power said.

“Council continues to invest in the development and growth of our grassroots sporting groups and emerging athletes with quality facilities that benefit the wider community, like this new clubhouse in Noffke Farm Park.”

A new carpark constructed under the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure

program complements the upgraded facility.

Noffke Farm Park will also receive a Council-funded lighting upgrade in coming months.

Lifestyle Chair and Division 6 Councillor Tony Hall said he was proud to see the refreshed Noffke Farm Park open for use.

“This clubhouse has been a long time coming for the Waterford Demons and it’s great to see it come to life as the club settles into its new home,” Cr Hall said.

“It’s been fantastic to see the positive impact it has already had on the rugby league club and broader community.”

The club moved into the new facility ahead of the start of the 2023 rugby league season.

Waterford Demons Rugby League Club President Glenn Bochow said the new facility would help the club reach new heights.

“Our volunteers are the backbone of our club and without them we would not exist,” Mr Bochow said.

“The new club is a reward for all our members and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the club running.

“It has enabled us to put back on display our club’s history that has been stored in boxes for the past few years…it has also allowed us to gain a source of income by hiring it out to our members for functions, as well as hold our own club functions.”

The Waterford Demons Rugby League Club is located at Noffke Farm Park, 91 Armstrong Rd, Meadowbrook.

DIVERSITY WORKS

Employment opportunities for migrants and refugees

MultiLink Community Services Inc in Logan Central have been fortunate for the past 18 months to receive funding from Queensland Government to run the Logan Diverse Workforce Hub (LDWH). This project targets refugees, migrants and International Students to help them into employment. It is a great program that has already assisted over 120 people from diverse backgrounds into jobs in our community and those numbers just continue to grow.

All of the participants we support come with amazing or heartfelt stories on their journey to our door. Whether escaping a war-torn country, loss of a loved one, long-term separation from family members, harrowing journeys on boats and across land, the end goal is the same – to find a job in their new homeland and support their families.

Here are a couple of ‘snapshots’ of participants....

Fatima H. came to MultiLink seeking help for employment after arriving with her three daughters from Afghanistan and being separated from her husband for 10 years. Fatima and her family had been

through some turbulent times with disruptions in her home country by the Taliban. Fatima’s work experience was minimal but we created a resume for her and sent it to our contacts in the warehousing industry and were successful in finding Fatima employment in MT Cotton. Fatima was so happy to have a job which gave her a sense of relief and said she is very thankful for the support provided.

Fatehi S. arrived in Australia in March 2023 from Yemen. MultiLink’s LDWH team were able to help Fatehi create a resume and gain his tax file number and then a job with a meat factory that suited his previous experience as a butcher. Fatehi said, “I am very happy and excited about the new challenges to come.”

If you have a business that NEEDS staff, then before you turn the page, make contact with MultiLink’s Employment Team today. You too can make a difference to a person’s life. employment@multilink.org.au

EAGLEBY

Eagleby became a farming community established as part of the early German settlement of the region. It was originally known as Philadelphia. St John’s Church, Philadelphia, was built in 1876. The old town subdivision for the area as part of Beenleigh was not used, and development occurred on the rural properties. The church located on Herses Road and the first mail office was established at Oppermann’s farmhouse in July 1882.

The 1887 flood had a devastating effect in Eagleby, as it did elsewhere. Most cane planted in Eagleby was washed away. New cane planted later in the year did not sprout because of drought. Oppermann’s wharf and storage sheds washed away. The Tingalpa Divisional Board decided that Eagleby was a better option to replace the Alberton ferry. In the flood, the Alberton ferryman’s house, ferry approaches and wharf had all been destroyed. In December 1887, the Board lobbied the Beenleigh Divisional Board to establish a ferry between the Gramzow (Carbrook) reserve and Oppermann’s.

By 1889, 100 acres of Eagleby land was under sugar and farmers had diversified into growing maize and fodder crops. Oppermann’s also had a small dairy.

The Eagleby school was established in 1906, with a festival on 15 June to mark the occasion. The building was constructed by Mr Krebs of Beenleigh. He failed to follow the specifications and was barred from future building for the Department. Despite the initial construction problems, the opening day was a huge success. The school committee was congratulated on the fine building they had erected.

The Tingalpa Divisional Board appears to have inquired to the Marine Board about the legality of a ferry at Eagleby. In December 1908, the Marine Board replied that no applications had been made. By October 1911, Messr Krebs and Co., who operated the Rosevale sugar mill in Eagleby Road, sought permission to operate a ferry between their mill and Gramzow. Tingalpa Shire was concerned about whether the Loganholme ferry would remain viable if the new ferry started. But they requested a plan of the proposed sugar plantings and a formalised lease agreement. It would appear that this took some time. By December 1915, it was noted that the Loganholme ferry takings were up, even though cane wagons were no longer using it. This meant the Eagleby ferry was up and running, either officially or unofficially.

24 | Beenleigh Guide

Steamer operators John Burke and Sons built a new wharf at the Mount Cotton wharf site at Gramzow (Carbrook) in September 1910. Krebs could have used this in his cross-river venture. There is no clear evidence of a formal arrangement with the local councils for a ferry at this location, but there is no doubt that it operated.

Krebs’ Rosevale mill appears to have ceased operation around 1918. The Eagleby Sugar Company, originally started by Oppermann, continued to operate and was run by Christian Herse in the 1910s. In 1933, the mill’s managers requested that a road be built in the Carbrook reserve leading to the Mt Cotton wharf. It seems there was ongoing use of the cross-river ferry at this time. Arthur Kruger recalled much river traffic to the sugar mill in the crushing seasons during the 1930s. The mill, which was located at the intersection of Wharf and Eagleby Roads, was visible from Kruger’s house and the reserve. This mill survived until 1943.

Other cross-river traffic was of the religious and cultural kind. Families from Gramzow (Carbrook) crossed the river by boat to attend church in Eagleby. Children received religious instruction when preparing for special events like confirmation. Pastor Thiele taught the local children German language in the years leading up to World War II. Locals on both sides of the river were involved in the Eagleby brass band and the church choir.

Declining attendances at the Eagleby State school at 133 Eagleby Road saw it close in 1968. The building was purchased and used as

a home. A new school, the Eagleby South State School, was built in 1978 and was officially opened by Russ Hinze on 29 July.

Urban development in Eagleby in the early 1980s led to a need for community services. The Eagleby Self Help Group formed in 1981 and became the Eagleby Community Association in September 1982. With the Albert Shire Council, the Association helped construct a scout den which opened in 1982. A swimming pool and community hall were completed in 1983. In partnership with the Playground and Recreation Association, the Eagleby Community Association helped establish the Olivers Sports Complex, which includes a cricket oval, Little Athletics oval, baseball diamond and netball court.

In 1986, a half-acre site to the south of Eagleby State school was set aside as a kindergarten and child care centre. In the same year, the Albert Shire Council approved construction of stage one of a children’s playground, located behind the swimming pool in Bishop Street. The playground opened in time for the Christmas holidays and was operated by the Playground and Recreation Association of Queensland. A new primary school was needed for the region, and was built during 1987 and officially opened in 1988. Later that year, Coles opened a supermarket as part of a major shopping centre in Fryar Road.

In 1995, a new footbridge over the Pacific Motorway was constructed between Fryar Road and George Street. It replaced the old footbridge built in the late 1960s.

Today you may try to contact several people. You might particularly want to reach a female friend or relative who lives far away. This could prove frustrating, as you have some interesting news for her. Keep trying. You will eventually manage to connect, and she will be glad to hear from you.

Whether or not you should make a specific expenditure could cause some tension between you and a partner, Pisces. You may think that it isn't feasible now, while your friend is determined to go for it. This isn't the day to try to reach an agreement in this matter. Neither of you is likely to give in. Wait a couple days until you're both a bit less tense.

A friend may be throwing a party and you might be expected to attend. You've probably had a stressful day and really don't feel up to it. Your friend may try to induce you to come by making you feel guilty. Don't fall into that trap. Go only if you feel that the value of the occasion overrides your need to rest.

Today you might receive some uncomfortable intuitive signals from one or more of your friends. Perhaps someone doesn't feel well but came out to play anyway. Sensing the tension in others could save you some grief, as people may be stressed and likely to lash out over nothing. It's best to focus on solitary pursuits if you can.

Today you may attain a goal you've been hoping to reach for a long time, Gemini. Oddly enough, friends, family, and even your significant other may not seem as happy as you expected. They've probably suffered too many frustrations recently, and your success only reminds them of this. Give them some time to settle their own affairs and they will congratulate you. They're only human.

Today you may be anxious to spend time with your family, Cancer, but there could be some chores you need to do first. This could stress you out quite a bit if you let it. Roll up your sleeves and handle whatever needs to be done and then hightail it back to your hEarth. Relax and enjoy the company of your loved ones!

Today it might be more difficult than usual for you to deal with words, Leo. Someone might lend you a book on a rather obscure subject that you can't understand. In fact, you might find the bookor anything else you try to readboring! You don't want to hurt your friend's feelings. Put the book aside and try again later.

Some news that comes to you from a friend or colleague could shake you up today, Virgo. You might find that what you learn casts doubts on concepts you've embraced for most of your life. This could confuse you. Don't feel threatened. Everyone has to recreate some values from time to time. Think about it when you're more relaxed and you might find it isn't so radical after all.

You may have a few differences with a current or potential partner, but this is nothing to worry about. You're tense and edgy because of outside pressure, so your fuse might be a bit shorter than usual. Try to stretch your patience a little further, just for today. All should be well by tomorrow.

Today you may be in a very stressful atmosphere. Your entourage is likely to be tense and anxious, and you're no exception. You may need to stay in the environment until you've accomplished your objectives. You will probably want to spend your evening doing and thinking absolutely nothing. Relax!

ou and a current or potential partner may disagree on whether to spend some time together alone or go out with friends, Sagittarius. If you've both had a rough day, you're likely to be rather tense and apt to snap at each other. A compromise may be the best answer. Spend an hour or two with your friends and then come home and relax. That way, everyone's happy.

A relaxing evening at home may be just what you need, Capricorn, but a colleague might ask you to attend a business-related event. You may have had a stressful few days. Such a party may be the last thing you want to do. Don't be afraid to say no. There will be plenty of colleagues there.
