AN ALLIGATOR IN THE LOGAN RIVER

The following article was published in The Brisbane Courier on Wednesday 1 March, 1905, p.4.

‘We are informed by a correspondent that on Thursday last Mr. William [Wilhelm] Hammel, aerated water manufacturer, of Beenleigh, observed a large alligator on the bank of the river near Loganholme ferry - Mr. Hammel procured a rifle and succeeded in wounding the saurian, which took to the water, and disappeared. From time to time of late the existence of an alligator in the Logan River has been alleged, but no credence has been given to these reports, as no authentic record exists of the occurrence of the alligator in Queensland rivers south of the Mary. The appearance of the specimen shot at by Mr. Hammel may possibly be accounted for in this way:

Some nine years ago two well-known Brisbane

residents received the unusual Christmas gift of an alligator from some friends in the North. The night after this remarkable "present" arrived in Brisbane, it escaped from the case in which it had been carried, and as no trace could be found, it was surmised that it had made its way to the river. This surmise was strengthened when a week or so later a fishing party reported having seen a strange monster resembling an alligator off Fisherman Island.’

This crocodile was found floating much later, the carcass having floated up river, and pulled to shore on 23 June. One report stated that it measured 12 feet 8 inches. The dead crocodile caused great excitement in Logan Village. Locals posed behind their new trophy and schoolchildren were given an opportunity to inspect this “curiosity”. The Brisbane Courier published a photograph showing a small schoolboy’s head next to the open jaws of the croc, which was later skinned and its stomach revealed to contain corn, several ducks and small turtles.

GAMES PLAN SETS UP CITY FOR SUCCESS

Logan leads the way with Olympic legacy vision

The City of Logan has doubled down on a bold bid to become a South East Queensland destination of choice.

Logan City Council’s 2023-2028 Destination Management Plan, adopted today, charts a new course for the city as a leader in sustainable nature-based encounters, sporting and cultural events and entertainment experiences.

The plan will work in tandem with Council’s 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap – an exciting new vision to capitalise on economic, cultural and social development opportunities ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and beyond.

The ‘Roadmap’ – also adopted today – will guide the planning of the recently announced indoor sporting venue in Logan Central, as Council and the Queensland Government develop a business case for the multi-purpose facility.

It will also underpin future Council actions to advocate for vital transport and community infrastructure across the

city, with improvements to supporting telecommunications systems and upgrades to the nearby Woodridge train station high on Council’s agenda.

Mayor Darren Power said the City of Logan was already a key logistics and workforce hub between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It is also home to 234 different cultures.

“Our diverse city has enormous natural and cultural advantages as a commercial, tourism and culinary destination and this profile is certain to grow as the Olympic and Paralympic Games approach,” Cr Power said.

“With so many different cultures already calling our city home, Logan will be a ‘must-do’ destination for the many visitors we can expect in the lead up to, and during the Games.”

Key actions within Council’s 2023-2028

Destination Management Plan include:

• Encouraging the development of more high-quality, short-term accommodation

Expanding the city’s night-time economy, and enhancing the offerings of key food and cultural tourism precincts

• Backing local business to support the growth of an active and engaged, tradeready industry

• Delivering and opening the new Riverine Discovery Centre at Eagleby (slated for completion in mid-2024)

The plan will also work to increase visitor spend and stay within the City of Logan and develop a calendar of destination-based events to increase visitor demand.

Economic Development Chair Councillor Jon Raven said small steps taken now were critical to delivering long-term, city-wide benefits for residents and businesses.

“The next decade and beyond is our once-ina-generation opportunity to drive and deliver the infrastructure, employment and lifestyle opportunities that will help our city thrive,” Cr Raven said.

“Reaching those goals off the back of the Olympics and Paralympics will require bold decisions by this and future Councils, but the benefits for City of Logan families and businesses will be enormous.”

The community will be invited to have their say on Council’s 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap in coming months.

Details will be available soon on Council’s Have Your Say website: haveyoursaylogan.com.au

NAIDOC WEEK 2023

The history, culture and achievements of the City of Logan’s First Nations residents will be celebrated next month.

The Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day will run from 9am to 2.30pm on Tuesday, July 4 at the Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) Cultural Precinct.

The day, hosted by the Logan District Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders, will feature a Welcome to Country and smoking and flag-raising ceremonies.

It will mark NAIDOC Week which runs from Sunday, July 2 until Sunday, July 9.

Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall said the community would come together through the Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day to recognise and celebrate the City of Logan’s rich Indigenous heritage.

“I encourage people to join in and experience all the great activities on offer such as yarning circles with the elders and didgeridoo-making workshops,” Cr Hall said.

“This year’s event is focused on the city’s elders as across every generation they play an important role in our community as cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, advocates, teachers and leaders.”

A key element of the Logan NAIDOC Family Fun Day is a free live entertainment program featuring traditional and modern performances on the KBF stage.

The program also features information stalls, a free barbecue lunch, activities for children, traditional foods for sale, a damper-making competition and a traditional weaving session.

A free bus pick-up and drop-off service will operate from Slacks Creek Park’n’Ride, the Logan Central Kmart bus stop and Logan City Council across from the Logan City Special School.

RIDING BEYOND BOUNDARIES

The kids who come to ride horses here may never have liked sport. Perhaps they are more used to clinging to their carers rather than venturing out.

But when I visited the Crowson Park RDA, the local Riding for the Disabled facility at Greenbank Logan, you can see the kids with disabilities blossom. I have no idea how it works, but for some reason it's just brought kids to life. I am unsure what these kids are like with other sports, but what I witness is that :

"Here, kids grow in smiles and confidence ... I don't know how it works, but it just does."

On the morning I visited the centre, there were about 10 regular riders at the Crowson Park Riding for the Disabled, supported by three experienced coaches, patient horses, and dozens of volunteers.

Riding for the Disabled was founded in Queensland in 1985, expanding into other states offering riding lessons and therapeutic exposure to horses for children and people with disabilities.

Now, the volunteer organisation has 17 centres in Queensland and dozens more nationally.

Horse and rider

At Crowson Park, the centre has well divided riding areas; the main arena, bushland & tracks with five horses and many volunteers putting their time into helping people with disabilities grow through riding lessons each week.

It is found that, when we sit on a horse, and a horse walks underneath us, it creates in our pelvis and our torso exactly the same movement as when we walk on our own two feet, so for riders who find walking very difficult, impossible or really tiring, horse riding can recreate that walking experience.

And for riders who struggle with communication issues, the horses are never pushing for an answer, so they can take as much time as they need.

Have a little spare time or would like to take on a volunteer role for a worthwhile cause? Visit our website: qldguides.com or contact Crowson Park RDA Direct on : 0436 341 239

RAIL TRAIL PRELIMINARY DESIGN ENDORSED

Community concerns addressed in Rail Trail design

Extensive community feedback, including requests for fencing, have been included in preliminary designs for the proposed Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail.

Electronic gates, safety cameras, fencing and screening vegetation are among the added design elements after Logan City Council undertook a range of engagement activities – online and in-person – with concerned residents.

The engagement and input was beneficial in informing the preliminary design.

The 11.5km trail will feature three surfaces –concrete, asphalt and gravel – to accommodate walking, jogging, cycling and horse riding.

The 4km sealed section and gentle grades from Bethania Station to Dairy Creek Road will provide access for users of all abilities.

While most timber bridges were found to be significantly deteriorated by age and weather, the project will look for opportunities to pay respect to the corridor’s historical links when designing new crossings at various locations.

Additional features of the preliminary design include:

• Feature planting at key points such as Bethania Train Station, Logan River Lookout and Dairy Creek Road

• Seating, shelters, water bubblers and bins, including a dog waste bag dispenser

• Bike and horse trailer parking at the Dairy Creek Road trail head

The route will link with the popular Logan Village to Yarrabilba Rail Trail opened by Council in 2021.

It is envisaged that the Rail Trail could eventually be extended to Jimboomba and Beaudesert and become a major regional tourism attraction.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said there would be recreational and economic benefits from the Rail Trail.

“This will be a fantastic drawcard for our city and provide opportunities for everyone to get out an enjoy our special open spaces and river outlooks,” Cr Power said.

“It was important we listened to the community in the planning stage, and I am pleased with the preliminary design that has been developed based on that important feedback.”

Division 4 Councillor Laurie Koranski and the Mayor have written to local residents to thank them for their input to the project.

Cr Koranski said Council had consulted extensively with the local community and a range of other stakeholders, including cycling and

horse-riding groups, before finalising the Rail Trail design.

“I understand Council has undertaken more community engagement on this project than just about any roads project in its history,” Cr Koranski said.

“We have listened to what the community wanted on this, and that’s why we have included important elements to the design such as fencing, gates and more safety cameras near residential areas.”

The community will soon get a further opportunity to see the proposed preliminary design and provide feedback before construction, which is expected to begin late next year.

A Have Your Say survey last year indicated strong support for the trail, with more than 70 per cent of respondents saying they would use it.

More information on the preliminary design is available on the project page on Council’s website – logan.qld.gov.au/bethania-loganvillage-rail-trail

EDENS LANDING

Uncovering the local businesses, history and community that makeup Edens Landing

Uncovering the local businesses, history and community that make up Beenleigh Leighton Holdings developed the suburb known as Edens Landing between 1984 and 1985. Originally named Holmview Heights, it was later renamed after an early resident named Henry Eden, who lived in Waterford. In November 1985, the Place Names Board officially gazetted the name Edens Landing.

In the 1860s, Henry Eden was actively involved in the timber industry along the Logan River. He wrote to the government in 1865, seeking permission to establish a punt and ferry boat. The ferry reserve was proclaimed on 23 November 1865, near the current bridge location. Earlier that month, Eden had purchased four acres of land from Patrick Leo, situated on the Beenleigh Road between Loganlea Road and the riv-

er. On 24 November, he successfully obtained the ferry lease. In 1866, he operated another ferry called the Lower Logan Ferry or Holmes Ferry at Loganholme, further downstream from the current bridges, on Mr Buchbach's property.

In the early 1870s, Eden relocated to the Tweed River, where he acquired land on the north bank and built a small cedar house named Ostia. He operated a shipping service, transporting cedar from the Northern Rivers district to the timber mills in Beenleigh. Eventually, Eden returned to England to assume his inherited title of Viscount Eden.

Another notable early settler in Edens Landing was Wilson Holliday and his family. They engaged in dairying and cultivation on their

property called Sherwood. Holliday served as the clerk for both the Waterford and Beenleigh Councils, and the two councils shared an office in Beenleigh during the 1880s and early 1890s. In 1869, a Wesleyan Church was constructed on Holliday's property and was opened on 22 March by Reverend Isaac Harding. It was later relocated to Beenleigh. Reverend Harding was then assigned to Pimpama, where Henry Jordan's family donated land for the construction of another church.

According to a map accompanying the Waterford school request, there were five additional settlers in the Edens Landing area in 1870, in addition to the Hollidays and the Berndts who lived on the western edge of Bethania. The area was already well settled by the mid-1860s, with German and English farmers growing maize, potatoes, and experimenting with tobacco. In 1865, property owner Alexander Beaton documented a boat landing in the vicinity where the water was deep. A correspondent to The Queenslander in 1866 mentioned that Eden also operated a ferry in that area.

Edens Landing remained primarily an agricultural area until the late 20th century. The improvement of train services in the 1980s prompted Leighton Developers to fund the construction of a station at Edens Landing, which was inaugurated in January 1986. Furthermore, the Edens Landing State School was established in 1997.

Here is a selection of iconic local businesses that make up the Edens Landing community.

One Early Learning Centre Edens Landing Campus

Located in the vibrant suburb of Edens Landing, Day One Early Learning stands as a prominent business catering to the community's youngest members. With a nurturing environment and a holistic approach, Day One offers exceptional care and education for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. Their skilled educators tailor programs to each child's interests, creating an environment where children can thrive.

The centre's well-resourced indoor and outdoor spaces provide ample opportunities for children to learn and grow while fostering social and emotional development. As one of the businesses shaping the fabric of Edens Landing, Day One Early Learning contributes to the suburb's vibrant community and family-friendly atmosphere.

ERESIDENTIAL: REDEFINING REAL ESTATE

Led by a group of young entrepreneurs from diverse business backgrounds, eResidential is bringing a fresh perspective to the Edens Landing and greater Beenleigh area. With a strong focus on client satisfaction and active community engagement, they are reshaping the local property market one successful transaction at a time.

"Inspired by our passion for making deals and helping people achieve better outcomes, we ventured into real estate," says Welly Cendana, the Sales Manager at eResidential. "Achieving a high level is in our DNA."

Their journey began in 2017 when Welly, having achieved remarkable milestones in the hospitality industry, recognised the changing dynamics and decided to pursue his passion in property. Joining a small franchise in 2019, they eventually evolved into eResidential in 2022, now comprising of a team of 8.

At eResidential, integrity is at the core of their approach. "We believe in providing our clients with realistic expectations and delivering on our promises," says Welly. "Unlike other agents who overpromise and later lowering the price - we never resort to such tactics."

Their track record of success also speaks for itself. They have achieved remarkable results, including selling out a land subdivision of 64 lots in Holmview after previous unsuccessful attempts by other agents. Their dedication and expertise have

also been recognised with Robby Christanto, Sales & Marketing Consultant at eResidential, being awarded the 'Agent of the Year Awards - Suburb Winner 2023’ for the Edens Landing area.

Edens Landing, with its market potential, holds strong prospects according to Robby. "We believe the market remains strong in Edens Landing, with a significant number of interstate buyers closely monitoring the area. One major deciding factor is that Edens Landing has fewer investment properties compared to neighbouring suburbs. This provides greater stability when the market changes and offers a cushion during market downturns."

Beyond their professional accomplishments, eResidential actively supports the local community. Collaborating with organisations like the Rotary Club of Beenleigh and participating in events organised by the Indonesian and Thai communities - making a positive impact beyond real estate.

Through their innovative approach, unwavering integrity, and community involvement, eResidential is transforming the real estate experience in not only Edens Landing but the whole of Logan City. Their dedication to client satisfaction and commitment to making a positive impact make them a trusted choice for buyers and sellers in the area. With eResidential, the future of real estate in Edens Landing is looking brighter than ever.

Milestone celebration for Logan Entertainment Centre

The red carpet will be rolled out at the Logan Entertainment Centre next month as the iconic community venue celebrates its 21st birthday.

A gala evening of entertainment will headline the birthday celebrations on Saturday July 22.

The program includes the hit show Sisters Doing It For Themselves featuring the Sister Act soundtracks live on stage.

A post-show cocktail party, with live music and a dessert bar, will carry celebrations into the evening. Tickets are $79.

The milestone celebrations begin on Tuesday, July 4 with two performances of the children’s play Are We There Yet? at 12pm and 2:30pm.

Tickets are $15 and include a sausage sizzle picnic on the lawn between shows.

Mayor Darren Power said the Logan Entertainment Centre had become one of the city’s most popular pieces of community infrastructure.

“I remember that when the Entertainment Centre was built in 2002, it was a big step forward for the city,” Cr Power said.

“It made arts and entertainment accessible in Logan. Residents no longer needed to go into Brisbane to see some of the big touring shows.

“Since then, the LEC has been very well supported and utilised, not just for entertainment but for important events like our Volunteer Awards, Sports Awards, citizenship ceremonies and local school events.”

Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall is looking forward to celebrating the historic LEC milestone.

“The LEC has an impressive history of delivering fantastic performances and community events,” Cr Hall said.

“It will be great for the city to come together in July to celebrate an iconic Logan venue in typical Entertainment Centre fashion – with a great show and lots of fun.”

Division 2 Councillor Teresa Lane encourages residents from across the city to get involved in the celebrations.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity to celebrate a venue that has brought so much joy and laughter to the entire community. The program has something for everyone,” Cr Lane said.

Tickets and further information on both Logan Entertainment Centre 21st Birthday events can be found on the LoganArts website.

You're in a chatty mood and enjoy making contact with a wide range of people (but then, you usually are). It's a great opportunity to improve your relationship with a colleague, customer, or boss, simply by talking to them about whatever seems appropriate at the time. Lucky numbers are 33 and 66.

You're at your most dazzling and engaging right now, and your sparkling personality will attract plenty of admirers. You have a strong need to express yourself and prove that you're an individual in your own right. You don't want to be neatly filed away in a pigeonhole, and instead you want people to recognise that you're a unique human being.

The issues you're now dealing with won't always be on your mind. Eventually, they'll fade into distant memories. Even though life always brings challenges to deal with, in the nottoo-distant future your concerns will be less time-consuming. You're just re-examining things that need to be re-examined.

Maybe it's a reaction to the gloom of the past couple of days, but you're feeling restless and easily bored. Ideally, you should abandon at least part of your usual routine and do something radically different instead. Not only will this make you feel more lively, it will also bring you into contact with fresh ideas and new developments.

Put zest and energy into the day's activities, especially if they involve rushing around from one place to another, or keeping up with your partner. Enjoy being busy and productive; you'll be amazed at how much you manage to get done. In fact, whenever the pace slackens you'll start to feel restless and bored, wondering what you can do next. Lucky numbers are 9 and 17.

If you're concerned about the state of your finances, work hard to make them as healthy as possible. However, guard against your tendency to place too much emphasis on the material side of life, telling yourself that what you own is more important than who you are. This is your time, so be ready for luck from unexpected places.

Gather some of your nearest and dearest around you today, because it will do you good to spend time with them. Cook them a meal or just have a chat over a cuppa. You're in a reflective mood and your thoughts will soon wander to the past. You might even be tempted to get out some old mementos.

A certain person needs plenty of love and affection today otherwise they'll find other ways to get themselves noticed. This won't be very serious or problematic, but it might waste valuable time that you would rather have spent on other things. It could also make you feel rather guilty that you didn't give them what they wanted in the first place. Lucky numbers are 22 and 7.

This is a terrific day for embarking on a new routine or for altering your work schedule because the changes will inspire and excite you. If you're beginning a new job today, it's likely to bring you a few surprises along the way but it will also encourage you to think for yourself and to have the courage of your own convictions.

Someone may want to tick you off about something or tell you about some of the injustices of the world, but you'll soon decide that a little of this goes a long way. Try to save the situation by appealing to their sense of humour, although this doesn't mean ridiculing or making fun of their opinions.

Relationships are intense and highlycharged today, and you feel a great deal of love and affection towards the special people in your life. However, if you can't express this you'll feel cheated, and this frustration needs an outlet for all that pent-up emotion. Put it to constructive use, rather than waste it on a hissy fit or jealous tantrum.

It's a very sociable day, with plenty of opportunities to catch up on the latest gossip. Why not get in touch with a friend on the spur of the moment and suggest meeting up?

This is also a good day for taking part in a discussion because you'll find it easy to voice your opinions. Lucky numbers are 6 and 12.

FUNDING HELPS GREEN WARRIORS CARRY ON

EnviroGrants a triple treat for Norris Creek

Three City of Logan households have banded together to help restore a local creek to its natural beauty.

Chambers Flat neighbours Helen and Lindsay David, Harriet Aitken, and Sandra Day have each received funding through Logan City Council’s 2023 EnviroGrants.

The funding will enable the residents to tackle the suffocating weeds and pollution along Norris Creek, which runs through their properties.

Ms David said Council’s support would allow them to restore and protect an important ecological corridor.

“Fortunately, all four of us think quite similarly about the environment and feel that it is our

responsibility to protect it,” Ms David said.

“When I noticed that this section of bushland that ran through each of our properties has important environmental value, I decided that we needed to get together and do something about it.

“We need to protect the natural spaces that we have in Logan, and the EnviroGrants will go a long way in helping us to do that.”

The 2023 EnviroGrants recipients were announced on Friday, June 23 at the Eco Forum Community Celebration at Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct.

The neighbours are among 14 landholders to receive funding towards on-ground ecosystem restoration.

Environment Chair Cr Jon Raven said Council’s EnviroGrants provided meaningful support for a wide range of projects every year.

“EnviroGrants are key to empowering the community to take action to protect and preserve our natural environment,” Cr Raven said.

“The restoration of Norris Creek is a great example of how Council’s EnviroGrants support residents to enhance and protect the ecosystems in their own backyards.”

Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan said improvements to the health of Norris Creek was a great outcome for the entire local community.

“We are very lucky to have so many committed eco-conscious residents in our division who know that our environment is worth protecting,” Cr Bannan said.

“The efforts of people like Helen, Lindsay, Harriet and Sandra doesn’t go unnoticed and their impact will reach well beyond their own backyards.”

Other EnviroGrants recipients included the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland which received nearly $20,000 in grants across

the Environmental Education, Environmental Partnerships and Capacity Building, and Environmental Surveys and Research categories.

The grants will fund a school-based education program on the threatened Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, an interactive PlatypusWatch native tree planting event, and surveys and conservation of greater glider populations in Logan.

Three schools were awarded grants under the Environmental Education category.

Logan Village State School will receive $2000 towards transforming an area at the school into a nature teaching space.

St Matthews Catholic Primary School, in Shailer Park, will use a $2000 grant to partner with Griffith University to establish an educational native plant growing project.

Calvary Christian College, in Carbrook, will take on a sustainable worm farm project to use up tuckshop scraps with a $2000 grant.

Fifteen individual wildlife carers were also provided grants for their ongoing work caring for and rehabilitating our incredible wildlife.
