ACHIEVEMENTS

D

elivering essential infrastructure, maintaining high levels of customer service and boosting the City of Logan’s environmental credentials are among the achievements highlighted in Logan City Council’s 2022/23 Annual Report, which was adopted today.

Mayor Darren Power said the achievements were worth celebrating, especially during a tough economic climate and the ongoing recovery from the 2022 floods.

“I’m proud of the Council team that continues to deliver quality services and programs to the Logan community each and every day,” Councillor Power said.

“The high points from the past year are many and varied.

“As Mayor, I’m excited that we secured a major sporting venue as part of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games funding deal, and that our ongoing advocacy efforts helped stop Inland Rail coming through our city.

“We also became only the second Council in Queensland to be certified carbon neutral and further progressed our new Logan Plan 2025 to ensure future growth is well-managed.”

The document reports on Council’s progress in delivering the 73 projects included in its Operational Plan at the start of the 2022/23 financial year as well as its financial position.

The organisation completed 67 of the planned projects (92%) and achieved an operating surplus of $14.3 million.

Council also gave a greater focus on value for money to maximise resources and implemented an organisational restructure to better align services and prepare for an unpredictable future.

“I’d like to thank my fellow Councillors for their hard work over the year and ongoing commitment to the City of Logan as well as CEO Darren Scott, the Executive Leadership Team and our 1800 staff for the outstanding work they continue to deliver to our community,” Cr Power said.

The Annual Report and financial statements will be published on Council’s website in coming weeks.

n Loganholme, just off the service road near the familiar Syd's Pie shop, stands Ironbark Fitness - a local gym run by a dynamic duo who are redefining what it means to be a fitness hub.

Jo Higgins and her co-founder, Alex, began their journey as personal trainers at Goodlife Beenleigh. Dreaming big, the duo often entertained the idea of owning a gym, but the concept took real shape when the 2020 lockdowns hit. "We started with just training

clients however we could within the guidelines," Higgins recalls. As the guidelines evolved, so did their innovative approach.

"Alex and I came up with the idea of her having 9 of her clients at one end of a park and I have 9 of my clients at another end, and halfway through the session, we swap," she said, detailing the birth of their 'Blended Bootcamp' business.

The success of their outdoor bootcamps made it evident that they had outgrown the park's confines. "We ended up running that for 12 months but got so big that we realised we needed our own facility," Higgins noted.

Thus, Ironbark Fitness was born.

The gym began its journey with nearly 50 members and has seen steady growth. "We now sit just under 90 members and still want to grow and help more people," Higgins proudly shares.

The duo's vision for Ironbark Fitness is clear - a safe space for everyone. "We have created a safe space for people of all ages and abilities to come and exercise, feel included and seen, have their personal goals valued, and have fun along the way," she said.

Both Jo and Alex have an impressive 13-year tenure in personal training, and it shows. “We run them like a PT session. Every member is closely monitored, corrected, modified if they have an injury," Higgins emphasises.

From knowing each person's name to understanding their unique goals and challenges. “Whether it's discussing nutrition or checking in on a member who hasn't attended in a while, we make sure everyone feels seen and supported," says Jo and Alex.

Jo's fitness journey began at 13, following a chapter with Wide Bay Representative gymnastics, and has since evolved into competitive bodybuilding. Meanwhile, Alex transitioned from her days as a semiprofessional ballerina to the demanding world of Ultra Trail races. Together they emphasise “We 100% walk the talk and practise what we believe in. Now the new owners are in, what can we expect? Would it be good, bad or is it going to be ugly? It’s an obvious question to ask following how good it was previously. And the night we visited the ‘New’ The White House Waterford, it did not disappoint. It was busy, noisy (good noise) in fact, it happened to be the Neil Diamond tribute night and meals were perfectly presented as was the aroma and taste. It was a night of Sweet Caroline all around.

I must admit though, that we at Logan City Guide have enjoyed the experience of the ‘Old’ White House of Waterford on our every visit!

We enjoyed many afternoons on the deck with carefully curated food & drinks after a hard day of work. Thank you!

Speaking with the new owner Mitch, who brings many years of hospitality experience, it was refreshing to see and hear that he is constantly looking to improve in every facet of this hospitality business including staff training to bring the best culinary experience to the city.

With much happening in the month of November, we will be joining in the Melbourne Cup luncheon and look forward to seeing many of you in the House. The White House!

BAHRS SCRUB A pproximately 30 minutes to everywhere.

Bahrs Scrub has a rural lifestyle but is still close enough to Brisbane and to the Gold Coast that you can live in peace and work in a city centre.

Koalas and frill necked lizards are regularly spotted as are the variety of birds and even an echidna according to some locals. But the best thing about living in Bahrs Scrub says one local, “it’s a great place to raise children with many great schools in the area both private and public and the kids are far enough away from the seedy places that you have to drive them to most places - ie they cannot just hang out at the ..... (you fill in the gaps)” says one local!

So, a great lifestyle that's safe, quiet and rural in nature.

Research shows the Logan LGA (local government area) has one of the strongest population growth rates across southeast Queensland and many projects have and are currently taking place in the suburb to accommodate expected growth in the region ... clearly the Logan City area is a place where a great number of people want to live and work.

So, where does the name Bahrs Scrub come from?

According to Logan City Council record, there is no agreement on the origin of the name Bahrs Scrub. It is quite possible that the area got its name from German settler Carl Wilhelm Bahr, born in 1840, or his son Wilhelm, born in 1860.

The name may originate from Jimmy-bark Scrub, as reported by a correspondent for The Queenslander newspaper in 1866, who documented his journey through the Albert and Logan districts. The area is called Barr’s Scrub in a letter to the editor of a local paper dated 21 February 1874. The hill between Bethania and Holmview has always been locally known as Bark Hill, so perhaps the name evolved from this.

Windaroo Creek rises in Bahrs Scrub and flows eastwards into the Albert River. In 1993, approval was given for the construction of a state high school to called Bahrs Scrub State High School. When it opened, it became known as Windaroo Valley High School, with the name taken from the housing estate being marketed at the time. Formerly in Albert Shire, then Gold Coast, Bahrs Scrub was made part of Logan City in 2008.

eel pain can be debilitating and affect your daily life. In this article we'll explore the causes of heel pain, podiatry treatment options available, and provide valuable information for patients to understand and manage their discomfort effectively.

Heel pain can result from various factors, including: Plantar Fasciitis: One of the most common causes, plantar fasciitis occurs when the tissue along the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed, leading to intense heel pain, especially in the morning.

Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects your calf muscles to your heel bone, can cause severe heel discomfort.

Heel Spurs: Bony growths on the underside of your heel bone can trigger pain when walking or standing.

EAGLEBY Exploring the History and Community of Eagleby

E

agleby, according to local legend, got its name when early settlers inquired of an Aboriginal man about the name for the eagles near the Albert River, to which he responded "Eagle be Mothchya". Thus, the name Eagleby was born.

Originally a section of the town of Beenleigh's survey, the southern part of Eagleby never really developed past being a wharfage site, especially after the main south coast road bypassed it in the 1860s. Instead, it grew into a farming community established by early German settlers and was initially called Philadelphia.

One of the prominent landmarks from this period was St John's Church, Philadelphia,

established in 1876. A few years later, in 1882, the community witnessed the establishment of its first post office at Oppermann's farmhouse, indicating its growing importance.

The 1880s were particularly significant due to the emergence of the sugar industry. Heinrich Phillip Oppermann played a central role, initiating a co-operative sugar mill venture involving 15 local German farmers. This cooperative was distinctive for its commitment to family labor, consciously choosing not to employ South Sea Islander labor.

However, this growth was not without challenges. The devastating flood of 1887 wreaked havoc in Eagleby. It washed away most of the infrastructure, including Oppermann's essential facilities. This disaster

set the stage for conversations and decisions about ferry replacements and infrastructure development.

By the end of the 1880s, Eagleby's agricultural scene had diversified, with land being utilised for sugar cane, maize, and fodder crops. 1906 was another milestone year, with the inauguration of the Eagleby school.

And although its construction faced issues, its opening was a celebrated event in the community's history.

The following decades saw extensive discussions and developments concerning ferry services. Records from this period suggest an operational ferry service, though its specifics remain a bit elusive. Importantly, the Eagleby Sugar Company, initially started by Oppermann, continued its operations under the leadership of Christian Herse until its closure in 1943.

The urban growth spurt in the 1980s transformed Eagleby, bringing in enhanced community services, new educational establishments, and recreational areas like the Olivers Sports Complex. In 2003, Eagleby welcomed the development of its Wetlands – a space that celebrated the region's ecology and promoted tourism, education, and recreation.

Fast forward to today, Eagleby has evolved tremendously from its humble beginnings.

According to the 2021 Census, the community has flourished to house 13,594 residents within 5,944 private dwellings.

Community and cultural life in Eagleby flourished over the years. Families often crossed the river for church services and local events. Eagleby's initial school closed its doors in 1968 due to declining student numbers.

However, a decade later, the community saw the establishment of the Eagleby South State School.

undreds of high school students eyed the future today when an informative employment event returned to Beenleigh State High School.

The second annual Bridge to Business expo connected year 10 to 12 students from more than 10 City of Logan high schools with more than 60 businesses on the hunt for local staff.

The event is an initiative of the Mayor’s Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce, which seeks to con-

nect job seekers of all ages with employment and training providers.

The Taskforce assisted 213 people – including 58 young jobseekers – find work in 2022/23.

Businesses from the construction, manufacturing, defence, health, food and performing arts industries attended today’s event.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said the mini-expo was a practical way to link young job seekers with future employment.

“This event is designed to bridge the gap between eager, job-ready school leavers and local employers keen to tap into the enthusiasm of talented young people,” Cr Power said.

Economic Development Chair, Councillor Jon Raven said Council was keen to help young people secure employment close to home.

“Local jobs help local people to prosper and enjoy quality of life while supporting the growth and development of our city’s established and emerging industries,” Cr Raven said.

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy said bringing schools and businesses together helped to build relationships and instil confidence in school leavers.

“Life after school can be daunting but events like these give young people the courage to pursue achievable goals in their own backyards,” Cr Murphy said.

The Bridge to Business event was coordinated by Logan Office of Economic Development and the Enable Coalition of Schools.
