RISING INTEREST RATES AND THEIR EFFECT ON HOUSEHOLDS

Managing the Challenges of Increased Borrowing Costs

As the global economy navigates through a period of uncertainty, central banks worldwide, including the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), are taking measures to raise interest rates. This is a common practice in economic cycles as central banks aim to keep inflation in check and maintain financial stability. However, these actions can have a significant impact on households in Australia, particularly those with mortgages or other forms of debt.

One of the primary ways in which rising interest rates affect households is through increased borrowing costs. As interest rates go up, so does the cost of borrowing money. This means that if you have a mortgage or other loan with a variable interest rate, your monthly payments will likely increase as well.

Rising interest rates can also affect the value of investments such as stocks and bonds.

When rates are low, investors may turn to riskier options to gain higher returns. However, as rates rise, these riskier investments may become less attractive as safer options like bonds become more competitive. This can lead to a decline in the value of stocks and other investments, which can impact the wealth of households that have a significant portion of their savings invested in these assets.

Rising interest rates can also have an impact on the value of investments such as stocks and bonds, leading to a decline in their value
8 | Beenleigh Guide

Another way in which rising interest rates can impact households is through the cost of credit card debt. Many credit cards have variable interest rates that are linked to the prime lending rate, which is influenced by the RBA’s interest rate decisions. As interest rates rise, the cost of carrying a balance on a credit card can also increase.

Despite these challenges, there are steps that households can take to mitigate the impact of rising interest rates. One option is to consider refinancing mortgages or other loans to a fixed interest rate. This can help to lock in a lower interest rate and provide some protection against future rate increases. It’s important to carefully consider the terms and fees associated with refinancing, as well as your own financial situation, before making a decision.

Another option is to focus on paying down debt as quickly as possible. By making extra payments on mortgages or other loans, you can reduce the amount of interest you pay and potentially save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.

As for the real estate market, the effects of raising interest rates can be difficult to predict. It may lead to a short-term decrease in property prices, but the long-term impact is uncertain.

W E E K E ND G Noosa etaways

One of the most popular beachside destinations in Australia, Noosa, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has everything you could want from a holiday. Lakes, stunning beaches, national parks and a hinterland, markets, day spas, golf courses, excellent food and lots of activities. Whether you want action or relaxation, Noosa has it all.

From zooming down the river to meandering through the markets, there’s always something to do in this seaside town.

While many people associate Noosa with the sand and sea, the seaside resort town is surrounded by lush greenery and bushland. The Noosa Hinterland is perfect for nature lovers and has some excellent walks to enjoy, even for the least green among us.

Why not check out the Botanic Gardens? Just a short drive from Cooroy on the shores of Lake Macdonald. There are more than eight hectares of native and international plant species to discover and there’s an abundance of wildlife that call the gardens home. There’s also a lily pond, picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids.

For those looking for exceptional walks around Noosa, look no further than the Great Noosa Trail. Explore the eight connected trails that pass through the national park and parklands through the Hinterland. There are short hourlong strolls through to a few hours’ trails.

16 | Beenleigh Guide

Along the trails, there are fantastic lookouts to admire the scenery as you go, including a spectacular view of the mountains.

Speaking of spectacular views, head to the top of Mt Tinbeerwah. You can drive almost to the top so don’t worry about exhausting your legs too much and the walk itself is only about 300m long. The viewing platform at the top provides 360-degree views from the north of the Sunshine Coast. For the stargazers, head up around midnight. The mountain is out of range of the suburban lights so the starry sky shines bright as can be.

If walking is not your thing, there is no better way to discover the best of Noosa and its surroundings than by bike!

Be it a fast-paced single-track MTB experience, a relaxed ride through the pristine rainforest or a scenic cruise through Noosa and the Hinterland, Bike On Noosa have an option for you. Their tour options utilize e-mountain bikes, e-cruiser bikes or standard mountain bikes. If you’d rather explore at your own pace and schedule, Bike On offers free GPS-assisted self-guided tour maps when you hire a bike.

Horoscope

Aquarius

18

Drop the attitude, and try a gentler touch. You risk alienating your supporters if you keep stonewalling them. People are not mind readers, for one thing. So getting frustrated because they can’t intuit what you consider “right” is unfair.

Pisces

If you’re wondering what people are thinking about you, Pisces, here’s a novel idea: Ask them! Soliciting feedback can be a great strategy for building connection under today’s moon in your interpersonal zone.

Aries

Forget about begging your fitness buddy to meet you at the gym today. Self-motivation is the name of the game, so pop in the earbuds and head off for a solo workout. If you need other people to pump you up, jump into a group cardio class.

20

Sharing isn’t just caring today, Taurus; it’s a savvy way to conserve your resources. Find clever ways to pool funds with people. Maybe you go in on a pricey purchase that you’ll all get good use of.

Rule of thumb for your personal life today: Keep family out of your business! It’s hard enough to find someone of enduring value who you also feel the sparks with. Trust your own feelings and stop seeking approval.

Cut through confusion and go on a fact-finding mission. Your worry can be quelled when you have real data in front of you. Reach out to an expert if you’re truly stumped. Internet searches can only take you so far and might even be misleading.

23 - Aug.22

Take one for the team, Leo. You may need to make a small sacrifice in the name of the greater good. Today could find you playing Best Supporting Castmate instead of the starring role or backing someone up from behind the scenes.

Scorpio

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Turn the heat up slowly today, Scorpio, even if you’re feeling a sense of urgency about matters. Firing off accusations could cause people to freeze. Yes, there’s a problem to deal with, but tackle it as a team rather than polarizing to opposite “sides.”

Although you’re blessed by today’s moon in Virgo, don’t force your agenda. The my-way-or-thehighway approach might win the battle but it will lose the war. Even if you ARE in the right, rubbing people’s noses in it is not the way to go. Resist the urge to say “I told you so” or gloat over a win.

Sagittarius

21

You’re not the type to rule with an iron fist, but today, a firm hand is required if you want to actualize your vision. That might begin with YOU getting organized, Sagittarius. Take charge of a plan, breaking it down into tasks and timelines, then sharing this with others who are involved.

Haste makes waste, Libra, especially when it comes to your decluttering missions. Although you’re ready to clear the decks, don’t be so quick to ditch those sentimental objects or generously hand over a family heirloom just because you aren’t using it at the moment. You could regret these decisions later.

If you can dream it, you can do, they say. But we don’t need to tell a Capricorn that you also need a plan to bring any mega milestones to the finish line. If you’re feeling daunted by your own ambitions (not unusual, we know), try breaking your project down into smaller steps.

Recipe PORK DUMPLINGS

Ingredients

Wrapper:

150g plain flour plus 150g more for dusting

1 egg and 1 egg yolk

1/2 tsp salt

Filling:

75g prawns, roughly chopped

75g pork mince

¼ bunch bok choy, finely diced

2cm piece of ginger, grated

1tsp sesame oil | 1/2tbs Shaoxing wine

1tbs light soy sauce | Pinch ground white pepper

1/8tsp bicarb soda | ¼ tsp cornflour

Black Vinegar Dipping Sauce

¼ cup Chinese black vinegar

¼ cup tamari | 1tbsp sugar

1 garlic clove, minced

1 spring onion, white part only, finely chopped Spring onion, green part only, for garnish

Method

1. For the dumpling dough, combine the flour, egg, egg yolk, salt and 70ml cold water in a bowl and mix to form a soft dough. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, cover and set aside to rest for 20 minutes.

2. For the filling, combine ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Set aside until required.

3. Roll rested dough using a rolling pin until thin. Using a round 8cm cutter, cut out dough into 30 rounds.

4. Place a teaspoon of pork and prawn mixture into the centre of a round, fold in half and press edges to seal. Bring the 2 corners together and press to seal. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. Set aside, in fridge, until serving.

5. For the Black Vinegar Dipping Sauce, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and set aside until serving.

6. To serve, bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Place dumplings into the boiling water and cook until tender and filling is cooked through, about 4 minutes. Remove Dumplings with a slotted spoon and place in serving bowls. Optional: Add one tablespoon of Black Vinegar Dressing, Chilli Oil and top with spring onions.

LIFETIME OF ART & CREATIVITY GOES ON DISPLAY

Artworks from a career spanning more than 30 years will go on display at Logan Art Gallery for the first time later this month.

From January 27 to March 11 the gallery will display a survey exhibition of prints and textiles by the late Robyn Daw in the Robyn Daw: Curious nature exhibition.

Robyn was Logan City Council’s Creative Industries Program Leader from 2012 until her passing last January.

Her creative practice spanned many decades and was recognised last month when she was posthumously awarded a

Gallery and Museum Achievement Award (GAMAA) for her lifetime achievements.

The next exhibition round will also feature Brisbane fashion designer Helen Miller’s SOOKii exhibition and artist Emma Gardener’s Fictionalish exhibition.

These exhibitions will launch the gallery’s 2023 program which features both local and interstate artists.

Helen was raised in Shailer Park during the 1970s and 80s. She is the daughter of a Japanese mother and Scottish father and is now the face behind clothing label SOOKii.

Her gallery exhibition will showcase limited-edition digital prints, theatrical masks and costumes and a collection of signature ready-to-wear silk dresses from the SOOKii archive.

SOOKii is a variant of the Japanese word suki, meaning a liking or fondness for something.

In Fictionalish, artist Emma Gardener uses drawing, trace-monotype, cyanotype and stitches to create works that question the human condition.

City Lifestyle Chair, Councillor Laurie Koranski said the 2023 program offered the community the chance to explore a diverse range of artistic experiences.

“The program will especially highlight the wealth of talent we have within the city with exhibits from talented artists, designers and makers,” she said.

Cr Koranski said Logan Art Galley was an award-winning venue.

“Along with the award honouring Robyn Daw, the gallery also received its sixth consecutive GAMAA last month for the exhibition project My story: the unbroken spirit of the Kalkadoons (Kalkadunga).”

The 2021 exhibition featured truth-telling works by First Nations artist and former Slacks Creek resident Colleen Sam (Ngungurnnumma Kalkadoon) and furniture designer Keith Weribone (Mandandanji).

Upcoming highlights of the 2023 program include:

• To the Light by Hopevale Collective.

• The Pride of Logan by Pamela See.

• Conflated toured nationally by NETS Victoria.

• Landscape paintings by Rochedale South artist Mei Mei Liu.

• Interlace by Australasian Contemporary Lacemakers

This project is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
