HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Receives Prestigeous Medal

At a ceremony conducted at The Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum on Friday 10 February, the President of The Royal Historical Society of Queensland, Dr Denver Beanland AM, presented the President of The Beenleigh and District Historical Society, Mr Rodney Hammel, with the prestigeous RHSQ Centenary Medal.

The Centenary Medal is presented for Service to the Discipline of History in its many Forms with particular reference to the Research, Preservation and Promotion of the History of Queensland.

The Centenary Medal is awarded to those who, in the opinion of the Council of the RHSQ, have contributed exceptionally to the history and heritage of Queensland.

The medal was designed and commissioned by Emeritus Professor John Pearn AO and was struck by National Medals. The medal is in the gift of John Pearn, a Councillor of the Society and of Mr Greg Faux of

National Medals. It was first bestowed in the Centenary Year of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland in 2013.

The obverse of the medal portrays, in stylised format, the Commissariat Store, completed in 1829. It is enfolded by an expanding wreath, symbolising the outreach of the Society and its dynamic promotion of history and heritage into the future.

The reverse portrays, at its centrum, two stylised quills, symbolising research, scholarship and education. On the dexter side is a stylised tjuringa. The image is stylised because each physical tjuringa is a sacred object portraying knowledge and history of the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia. Within its strands, spelt in digital code are the words “influence, collaboration, information, impact”. The electronic web comprises a major tool of research, outreach and the promotion of history by the Society and its Members. The three images are encircled by the Latin exhortation “Colantur Annales ut Futurum Ditetur” – freely translated as “May the history and heritage of the past be preserved in the order that the future might be enriched”.

THE BEENLEIGH & DISTRICT

RECOGNITION FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

City of Logan residents are encouraged to thank their local heroes through this year’s Logan Volunteer Awards.

Nominations are closing soon for the Frank Lenz Memorial Award for Volunteer of the Year, and the Davida Steele Memorial Award for an Outstanding Community Organisation.

City Lifestyle Committee Chair, Cr Laurie Koranski said it is important to recognise those who help improve the lives of others in our city.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community and play an integral role in so many of our community organisations,” Cr Koranski said.

“These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise and reward those who give up their time to help make our city an even better place.”

Previous winners of the Frank Lenz Memorial Award have included passionate football administrator Abdul Samim Khan, tireless community volunteer Peter Harrison-Kyte and dedicated cat rescuer Deborah Bright.

The Rotary Club of Beenleigh, the Muslim Charitable Foundation and the Rochedale Springwood Meals on Wheels are previous

recipients of the Davida Steele Memorial Award.

Rotary Club of Beenleigh President Janee Hong said it was wonderful to see the club recognised for its efforts in last year’s Logan Volunteer Awards.

“We are so proud to be the local Service Club recognised for the work we do in our community,” Ms Hong said.

“Our introduction to our meetings always starts with ‘This award-winning Club…’, and we believe this recognition has helped with grant applications and attracting sponsors and corporate partners.”

Nominees must be Logan residents or organisations and must be aware they are being nominated.

Nominations can be made on the Logan City Council website. Nominations close at midnight on Monday, April 10.

Winners will be announced at the Logan Volunteer Thank You Breakfast on Saturday May 13.

THE 2023 BEENLEIGH CANE PARADE AND GALA BALL

Following an incredible relaunch in 2021, the Rotary Club of Beenleigh is proud to be bringing back the much-anticipated Beenleigh Cane Parade and Gala Ball for 2023, as event planning has kicked off with volunteers early this new year.

The Beenleigh Cane Parade will be held throughout the streets of Beenleigh on the afternoon of Saturday 13th May, with the event starting from and returning to the Beenleigh Showgrounds. At the conclusion of the parade, the showgrounds will come alive with the presentation of official awards, food trucks, amusement rides, face painting and a laser light show. This event will be free for the public to attend and enjoy.

The weekend following the Beenleigh Cane Parade will see the Beenleigh Cane Gala Ball return on the evening of Saturday 20th May 2023. The third gala event to be held at the Beenleigh

Events Centre since the return of the events in 2021, the Cane Gala Ball has already become a stalwart event in the Logan community events calendar. Featuring a signature menu crafted to focus on our fabulous local produce, live entertainment, dancing and exclusive auctions and raffles fundraising for local projects. Keep an eye out when tickets go on sale. As the hottest ticket in town, the Beenleigh Cane Gala Ball is one not to be missed.

The first two annual events held have raised over $24,000, seeing the launch of the joint literacy project Sugar Sweet Stories. Together, the Rotary Club of Beenleigh, Quota Beenleigh and Soroptimist International Beenleigh commissioned author Karen Tyrrell and illustrator Megan Forward to write, beautifully illustrate, and publish the first children’s book in the literacy program ‘Follow the Sugar Trail’ a historical picture book, following the history of the Cane farming areas and township of Beenleigh and surrounds. In coming months, the Follow the Sugar Trail book will have over 2,000 copies donated to Year 3 students to schools with our local area to help promote literacy.

As organisation continues with the incredible volunteers from the Rotary Club of Beenleigh, we will soon be launching sponsoring packages in the coming weeks for local businesses looking to get involved. Also, if you are interested in coming on board to lend a helping hand, please register you interest with the Rotary Club of Beenleigh.

In 2021, the Beenleigh Cane Parade & Gala Ball was touted as giving our community a great big hug, and in the midst of the COVID pandemic, the community gathering saw young and old come out in droves to experience the spectacle (or reexperience the memories of yesteryear) of passing floats, bands, community groups and dancers. We can’t wait to see what creativity and passion the community holds for their floats and displays in 2023.

You’ll soon see banners and flyers appearing around town – but save the dates for years to come, Beenleigh Cane Parade 2nd Saturday in May and Beenleigh Cane Gala Ball 3rd Saturday in May. Bring your family, friends, neighbours, and friends and help us continue to grow this iconic community festival back to its former glory as we celebrate the heritage of Beenleigh, our current community, and our future.

To register for updates, please visit the events page of the Rotary Club of Beenleigh Facebook page (facebook.com/BeenleighRotaryClub) or contact the organising committee directly at bce4207@gmail.com

WONDER WOMAN

Have you ever wondered, “should I? Could I? Would I?” and still not taken that leap to make a change? Well never fear, Telesia is here, and hopefully her little story can help make you pick up the phone….

If anyone was deserving of a ‘SuperMum’ title, then surely Telesia Lata is a strong candidate. Telesia is orignally from Samoa and moved to Australia in 2015. She had been looking to get back into the workforce after being a stay-at-home mum for 7 children, (yes, 7!) when she found out about MultiLinks Cert. III Individual Support course and made contact. “I felt ready and wanted to give Support Work a go”. Speaking about her culture, Telesia says it is custom for Samoans to take care

of family, so growing up in that environment is where her passion for support work comes from.

Telesia enrolled and completed her studies with Blue Stone Medical in Yatala and was able to secure emplyment as a Personal Carer with TriCare Aged Care Residence in Sunnybank.

At MultiLink, we were so excited to see Telesia gain a new job, but the story gets better. Telesia said, “I’m so happy and just loving the work. I’m getting plenty of hours and my family have been really supportive. It has motivated me to study more. I now want to get become a Registered Nurse. TriCare have been supportive and I keep encouraging all the students we get coming through. I’m now doing a training program so that I can deliver presentations at work, which will be exciting. Oh, and I got Employee of the Month for two months running in December and January!” (Of course you did SuperMum!)

Telesia is a genuine superstar with a postive happy nature and hard working values she takes into the workplace on a daily basis. An asset to her employer in a short space of time no doubt!

If you have been thinking about a career in Aged Care or Disability, take a leap like Telesia and contact MultiLink today. Training is funded under Queensland Governments ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ program and available at NO cost to eligible participants. Aged Care and Disability Services can contact MultiLink to enquire about supporting participants like Telesia.

FURRY FRIENDS ON THE GO

Tips for Traveling with Pets

Are you planning a road trip with your furry mate? Whether you're hitting the beach, exploring the countryside, or just going on a joyride, taking your pet along can make the journey even more fun! But before you and your furry friend hit the open road, there are a few things you need to keep in mind to ensure a safe and comfortable trip. In this article, we'll share some pawesome tips to help you and your pet make the most of your travels. So buckle up and let's get started!

First things first, make sure you plan ahead and make reservations at pet-friendly accommodations and transportation options. And don't forget to call ahead to confirm any restrictions or fees.

Now onto packing for your pet, make sure you bring enough food, water, treats, and medication for the duration of the trip. Also, pack their favourite toys, a blanket or bed, and a leash or carrier. And if you're travelling by car, don't forget to bring some doggy bags for those much-needed bathroom breaks.

Once you're all packed, make sure your pet is safely secured in a well-ventilated crate or carrier while traveling. Not only does this keep them safe in case of an accident, but it also prevents them from distracting the driver or running away at rest stops. It's also important to note that in Australia, it is illegal for pets to sit on drivers' laps while traveling in a car.

During the trip, it's essential to keep your pet comfortable and relaxed. Take frequent breaks for exercise and bathroom breaks, and offer plenty of water and treats to keep them hydrated and happy.

Last but not least, schedule a visit to the vet before traveling to ensure your pet is up-todate on vaccinations and healthy enough to travel. And don't forget to get a copy of their medical records to bring with you, along with any medication they may need during the trip.

Now that you know these tips, you and your furry friend can hit the road and create unforgettable memories together!

THE GREAT DEBATE:

Morning vs. Evening Workouts

Are you trying to decide whether to work out in the morning or at night? It's a common debate among fitness enthusiasts, with strong opinions on both sides. Some people swear by their morning workouts, while others prefer to hit the gym after work. So, which is better? Let's take a closer look.

First, let's address the argument in favour of morning workouts. Many people believe that exercising in the morning helps them establish a routine and set a positive tone for the day. This can be especially true for those who have busy schedules and struggle to make time for exercise later in the day. Plus, some research suggests that morning workouts may help regulate your appetite and improve sleep quality.

However, there are also benefits to working out at night. For one, your body temperature tends to be higher in the evening, which can make it easier to perform at a high level during your workout. Additionally, evening workouts can be a great way to unwind after a long day and release any pent-up stress or tension.

But what about the notion that working out at night can disrupt your sleep? While some people may experience difficulty falling asleep if they exercise too close to bedtime, this isn't a universal truth. In fact, research has shown that exercising at any time of day can help improve sleep quality, as long as you give yourself enough time to wind down and relax afterwards.

*Minimum order requirement $55 excl delivery of $8.50. One per household. Offer not valid in conjunction with other offers.

So, is working out in the morning or at night better? The truth is, it depends on your personal preferences and schedule. If you're a morning person who likes to get their workout done before starting their day, go for it! But if you find that you perform better and feel more motivated in the evening, then that's the best time for you. The most important thing is to find a time that works for you and stick to it consistently.

Too Close For Comfort

Iwalked into my grandpa’s house feeling miserable. It was boring there with nothing to do. Even the grass was wilted. That’s how I felt. Wilted. I took my first step into the house and stood there, rapidly trying to think of the limited things I could do. I only came up with two – laptop or stare into space. Walking

wooden walls… empty! I sighed and tried to close the cupboard door, but before I could, I felt a bristle of wind tugging at my shirt. I turned around and before I could see what it was, the wind pulled me in.

Umph!! My shirt tugged at my neck as I found

Health or Enjoyment

Would you like to walk around overweight or with rotten teeth?

Do you like soft drinks? Lots of people do! But is it good for your health? If you walk down the drink aisle of any supermarket, what type of drink would you mostly see? Soft drinks! There are many reasons why soft drinks are popular. However, there are also many reasons why we should not drink them.

Why do people enjoy drinking soft drinks? Certainly, the most popular fact is that it tastes terrific and there are lots of flavours. The bubbly fizz puts a refreshing zing in your throat which feels fantastic! And these bubbles help an upset stomach feel better. Since people really

like very sweet-tasting drinks, soft drinks are extremely popular. However, there are many bad aspects.

Soft drinks can definitely be harmful and people can easily become addicted to them. That means they are addicted to sugar, and sugar is terrible for oral health. In addition, if we drink them to get energy, after about 5 minutes our energy quickly runs out so we drink more and more. Soon our teeth rot; furthermore, we have harmed lots of other things in our body. These drinks not only ruin our oral health, but make us overweight and hyperactive. That is because soft drinks often have artificial flavours and high sugar content.

Now we can see there are many reasons why soft drinks are popular. But there are also many reasons why we should not drink them frequently. Choosing to drink water instead, we will prevent rotten teeth and obesity.

Now think! Which one is more important? Our health, or our enjoyment?
