PROMINENT BUILDINGS IN BEENLEIGH PART THREE
Southern Queensland Lodge, Beenleigh
By Dr Graeme Nicholson OAM
Southern Queensland Lodge No.312 was formed in Beenleigh on 8 July 1878 under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Queensland, Irish Constitution.
Within their first year, members of the new Lodge voted to purchase land on which to erect a hall and a suitable block was located in James Street, nestled between the Beenleigh State School and the Show Grounds. It was not until 15 April 1887 however, that the first meeting in the new building was held.
The architect was a fellow mason, Hubert George Octavius Thomas, who had migrated to Brisbane from Wales in 1883. Mr. W. E.
Thomas of Brisbane won the building contract with a tender of £349. The hall was described as a small brick building with a regular Grecian temple front of columns, entablatures, and masonic mouldings.
Several Queensland buildings designed by H.G.O. Thomas are now heritage listed, and perhaps if this building had survived it might have shared the same honour.
Both the Hall and the Lodge itself were to undergo several changes over the years. In 1904 the Lodge adopted the Queensland Constitution and came under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Queensland, becoming
Southern Queensland Lodge, No.11; then in 1921 the Grand Lodge of Queensland united with a number of the Lodges that had formerly been under English or Scottish Constitutions to become The United Grand Lodge of Queensland and the Beenleigh Lodge then became Southern Queensland Lodge No.29 under this new jurisdiction. As the Lodge grew so did the need for more space and in 1903 the Hall was extended to include refreshment rooms. In 1908, with space still a problem, the original architect was consulted about the possibility of further extensions, but the Lodge was not in a financial position then to act on his recommendations. In 1932 electric lighting was installed.
In November 1944 the Department of Public Instruction approached the Lodge about resuming the land in order to extend the school. An agreement to sell was reached, but nothing further happened for many years.
In 1952, with the situation still in limbo, the Lodge purchased a block of land in Wharf Street (now part of George Street) from one of its members, Mr. J.A. Savage, and entered into negotiations to sell the James Street property to the Buffalo Lodge which had been renting meeting space from them for some years. The new masonic hall built in Wharf Street was dedicated on 6 July 1957.
The James Street land was eventually resumed by the Education Department and Mr. S.W. Stevenson of Gona Street purchased the hall for removal. In September 1960 the hall was removed and disappeared from the Beenleigh landscape.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR TERTIARY STUDENTS
Year 12 students from the Class of 2022 who have their sights set on further study can apply now to receive $5000 through a bursary program coordinated by Logan City Council.
The Tertiary Education Bursaries are awarded each year to City of Logan students who are starting full-time undergraduate studies after finishing school.
Governance Chair, Councillor Karen Murphy, said students from families with limited financial resources were particularly encouraged to apply.
“It can be expensive to go on to university after leaving school, with textbooks and other resources being quite costly,” Cr Murphy said.
“We have some of the brightest young minds here in the city and money shouldn’t be a barrier to reaching your potential, especially if you’ve demonstrated commitment to your studies throughout high school.
“Council has provided these bursaries for more than 20 years to help local residents succeed in a range of careers including health, arts, law, engineering and business.”
The bursaries are funded by Council as well as businesses and organisations from South East Queensland.
Applications for the bursaries are open until Friday, December 23.
Students will be assessed on their academic ability, educational highlights, motivation to succeed, financial hardship and personal or social circumstances.
More information about the program, including the eligibility guidelines and how to apply, can be found at logan.qld.gov.au/ tertiaryeducationalbursaries

LOGAN’S NEW ARTS CHAMPION
Belinda Topan is ready to challenge, network with and inspire local artists.
ogan has a new Arts Champion for the Chamber of Commerce! Introducing Beenleigh local and author,
“I am passionate about creating a space for the arts to thrive in Logan and I am looking forward to working with other creators who are just as eager to get the city of Logan shaking, as well as inspiring the next generation of artists,” stated Belinda.
“I started young myself and began writing from around the age of 7 or 8. Since then I was hooked. It gave me great joy to create the characters and develop the storyline – trying to spark the reader's imagination with every sentence.”
Belinda is a local author who has selfpublished three vampire novels in the past three years and is currently working to record
“From a young age, I have always had a vivid imagination, going off on grand adventures, saving the day, the hero I have always wanted to be. I hope to inspire the next generation of artists and become a role model for those interested in the arts. I didn’t have that growing up, so I want to show that it is possible to pursue their art and turn it into a successful career. I want them to think, well if she can do it, so can I,” explained Belinda.
Her journey to become Logan's arts champion started when she first met Rhiannon Elton, the previous Arts Champion in 2021.
“I first met Rhiannon when she was the Arts Champion. She was doing a call out for local writers to come and talk at the first Logan’s Writers Festival, so I wrote back and said I would love to come along and take part. Upon meeting Rhiannon at the library, I asked if she needed a hand and since then, it has snowballed into my role now,” explained Belinda.
“When I first started, I wasn’t even a member of the chamber yet. I was just an outsider who said I would love to help. It started with me helping to run the Logan Writers festival and the arts community as well as volunteering my time for ‘Writing Fridays’. It has been great to see it grow – from just the two of us in the beginning to the small community we have now.”
There are several programs currently available that people can participate in.
One is ‘Writing Fridays’. Held at the Logan Central Library every Friday, this is a “sit down and write” group, which will leave you with a sense of belonging and with something written
on the page. Being an author is often thought of as a lonely life, but it doesn’t have to be. Sitting in a library writing with your friends, getting together and sharing each other's successes is far from lonely. Open to all writers, the group offers a chance for them to come together to focus on their writing.
Another program is ‘Arts After Dark’. Arts After Dark is a bi-monthly, free networking meeting and a great opportunity for artists of all mediums to come together and share their passion for the arts, while getting to know, network and form connections with each other. The next meeting is on the 8th of December from 5:30 pm at Fitzy’s Waterford. Visit Eventbrite - Arts After Dark, to register for the event.
“Everyone is welcome. We believe that the arts are an essential part of any community and we are committed to supporting the artists who make Logan City a vibrant place to live. We hope that you will join us in supporting this important effort and band together to build a strong community for the arts!” exclaimed Belinda.
“There is a lot we would like to do in the new year; so, watch this space. We have an entirely new committee and everyone is keen to roll up their sleeves and get started helping Logan. We are excited to see where this goes.”
On a separate note, a big congratulations to Belinda, who thanks to her work within Logan’s literacy community, Belinda has been nominated for the Johnno Award. Established in 2001, the Johnno Award is named for Queensland Writers' Centre founding patron David Malouf’s eponymous novel. The award is given for outstanding services to writers and writing in Queensland, particularly work that goes largely unrecognised by the public or the industry. The winner will be announced on the 9th of December at the Queensland Stated Library. Good luck Belinda!
For more information about the current programs and to stay up to date, visit the Logan Chamber of Commerce website, loganchamber.com.au or Facebook page, @ LoganChamber. Alternatively, email Belinda at arts@loganchamber.com.au.

Nightlight is a small charity run by volunteers since 2004. Throughout the year we do big things with little things thanks to the generosity of our friends who support us in so many ways. To say "Thank you" is not enough, as we can only help others because you help us to achieve a better life for those who are struggling. Each person we help has their own story and as we build relationships with them, we can often get to the root of the problem and give them what they need.
This Christmas and throughout the year all of us at Nightlight want to extend our dearest Thank You to every business, organisation,

BEENLEIGH SAYS I DO TO SMASH HIT MUSICAL ‘IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU’
Pop the champers, practise your speech and prepare to catch the bouquet as Phoenix Ensemble’s latest musical ‘It Shoulda Been You’ has opened to rave reviews.
As the father of the bride might put it, “Oy.” “It Shoulda Been You,” which opened in November at the Pavilion Theatre in Beenleigh, confirms the sad truth that weddings — those supposed celebrations of everlasting love — bring out the worst in some people. That includes cynics, show-offs, heavy drinkers, envious have-nots and it would seem, the creators of musicals.
Phoenix Ensemble’s production of ‘It Shoulda Been You’ is the Queensland premiere of Brian Hargrove’s sensational Broadway musical. Featuring a sensational cast of powerful singers accompanied by a live band, this rendition is sure to entertain, shock, and deliver uproarious laughter. Filled to the brim with zeitgeist and chutzpah, with a little sprinkling of fabulous, the
cast and crew have done a tremendous job in bringing this hilarious family-drama, romanticcomedy musical to life.
On the 4th of November, I had the opportunity to attend the opening night alongside my sister, Kate and without spoiling too much, ‘It Shoulda Been You’ delves into the controversies that arise when dealing with opposing religions, gay rights and in-laws; with more drama than any regular family soap-operas. Chaos ensues as everything goes wrong in the lead-up to a wedding ceremony between a Jewish bride (Grace Clarke) and her Catholic groom (Luke Devine). Throughout the show, the bride’s sister (Danika Saal) tries to hold everything together in
22 | Beenleigh Guide
the face of disaster including the bride’s exboyfriend (Shane Webb) showing up uninvited, and the mothers of the nuptial pair clashing claws (Della Days & Miranda Selwood).
When we first arrived at the theatre, we were unsure if we were in the correct location. From the outside, The Pavilion Theatre may seem like a big workers shed sitting quietly in a corner of the Beenleigh Showgrounds. However, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover for once the audience was settled in their seats and the show began, it was truly amazing to see the talent we have hidden in Beenleigh.
For when the performance began, the entire audience was captivated by the compelling storyline, and the actors’ performances – each wonderful balance in their comedic acting and the authenticity in their singing. From the very beginning of the piece, it was clear that the Director, Sheryl-Lee Secomb, has put a lot of thought and consideration into the production – working with the talented group of creatives,
Secomb has certainly created a thoroughly entertaining, and refined piece of theatre.
One of the stand-out performances for me was Danika Saal who portrayed Jenny Steinberg. This absolute force of nature was a highlight of the show. Along with her stunning vocals, she truly embodied her character. Owning the stage throughout her performance, especially during ‘Jenny’s Blues’ which marked the self-confident rebirth of her character.
Another highlight was the co-maid of honour and best man, Annie and Greg played by Chynna Santos and William Chen, who opened the second act with a fabulous and highenergy number, ‘Love You Til the Day’. Their performance had the audience in stitches and was reminiscent of every epic best man or woman's speech. It was a perfect way to open the show and possibly one of my favourite performances on the night.
The biggest surprise of the night came after the show had ended and the performers had taken their final bows, when Mark Rickell who portrayed Albert proposed to his girlfriend, Fiona Mumford in front of a shocked, yet ecstatic audience. What better way to finish an evening celebrating love than an actual proposal! Congratulations to the happy couple and best wishes for the years ahead.

BEENLEIGH
Uncovering the local businesses, history and community that makeup Beenleigh
Evolving from John Davy and Francis Gooding's sugar plantation, Beenleigh is often referred to as the town with three beginnings. This was because of three different attempts to start a township in the region. Davy and his brother-in-law Gooding settled in 1864 – naming their property, Beenleigh after the Gooding family property in Devonshire, England.
In 1867, Michael Tansey began The Planter’s Rest Hotel on the road to the Noyea sugar plantation. He was the first receiving officer for the mail. At that time, he also had a butcher's shop and a store. In 1868, James Savage started a general store at the crossroads of the five roads leading to the Logan and Albert Rivers. By 1871, Tansey moved into the current Beenleigh township and built a new hotel of the same name. His old hotel became the National Bank. The same year, a police station, courthouse and school were established in Beenleigh. The township continued to grow.
Other hotels were built and operated by Peter Betz in 1873, and Franz Meyer in 1874.
Community cultural and sporting activities evolved in the town. A dramatic society, a cricket club and the show society were established in 1871 and in 1872, the first Beenleigh Show was held. By 1885, Beenleigh boasted a range of services and professions.
The Beenleigh Rum Distillery evolved from the still of the old S.S. Walrus, which was a floating sugar mill and distillery. It was notorious for avoiding state duties on its rum production. In 1884, it ran aground on the bank of the Albert River. During the late 19th century, Beenleigh remained the centre of the local sugar industry. Following the devastating 1887 floods which destroyed crops and labour issues, the industry declined.
In July 1931, a new road bridge over the Logan River linking Loganholme and Beenleigh

opened. It replaced the ferry, which had operated from the site since 1868. Beenleigh became an important place for travellers to stop on the road to the South Coast (otherwise known as Gold Coast from 1950), however, changes to the Pacific Highway in the late 1960s saw Beenleigh bypassed and the town suffered a decline.
In 1964, Beenleigh State High School and Beenleigh swimming pool opened.
In the 1960s, the tourism industry developed along with the urban sprawl. Both Ashton’s and Bullen’s Circuses pushed for the Albert Shire Council to approve and build lion parks. In December 1968, Bullen’s negotiated to buy land in Stapylton. This became the Beenleigh/ Yatala African Safari when it opened in June 1969. Both the park in Beenleigh and Ashton's Animal Kingdom Park in Loganholme were short-lived. The Myer Corporation bought Ashton’s in 1977. The Westpac Corporation bought Bullen’s in 1987. They had plans to build an international Formula One race track and other facilities, which never eventuated.
Plans for the upgraded Pacific Motorway were announced in April 1996 after a change of government. The northern section of the motorway included duplicating the Logan Motorway. Construction began in late 1997 and finished by September 2000.
Today, Beenleigh is a tight-knit, active community and according to the 2021 Estimated Resident Population, Beenleigh is home to 8,558 people. Here is a selection of iconic local businesses that make up the Beenleigh community.

POOL SAFETY HEROES THE KEY TO SAVING LITTLE LIVES
As the weather warms up, pools around the City of Logan are being prepped and preened for another summer of fun.
As part of that preparation, property owners, parents and carers are being encouraged to become a ‘pool safety hero’ to make sure little lives stay safe.
Planning Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said Logan City Council wants people to check their pool fences and gates to ensure compliance with Queensland’s pool safety laws.
“It only takes a moment for a child to slip away from supervision and tragedy can happen if your pool isn’t properly enclosed,” Cr Raven said.
“However, there are a few simple things you can do to earn your pool safety hero badge to make summer as fun as possible.”
Pool safety heroes should: • check pool barriers meet current safety standards
• never lock or prop open pool gates
• ensure pool gates are self-latching
• put phones away and always supervise kids
• teach kids how to be safe around pools
• learn CPR.
“All pool owners have a responsibility to comply with the legislation,” Cr Raven said.
“We want to help owners through education and support if an issue is found in the first instance.
“Fines or legal action are a last resort if someone doesn’t take the necessary steps to become compliant.”
To make your pool kid-safe, go to: logan. qld.gov.au/poolsafety
