Physical Limitations

While WFH has its advantages such as reduced commuting time and greater flexibility of working hours, there are also significant inconveniences. A survey conducted by the DP Architects reflects that WFH has resulted in an overall decrease in productivity. This is due to a variety of factors such as physical and family distractions, the difficulty in collaboration between co-workers due to the lack of face-to-face coordination, as well as inadequate working supplies and weak internet connections. However, space constraints proved to be a more significant underlying issue of the existing built environment as it cannot be easily addressed through facilities upgrading or adjustments of working disciplines. This is especially relevant in larger households and multigenerational families, where family members faced difficulties in finding a conducive and private space to WFH, especially for online meetings. Noise pollution from surrounding environment is another issue that needs to be addressed. (Narayanan, Lee, Chen, 2020)
