In 2023, we navigated through a tumultuous year
marked by a spectrum of challenges, including wildfires, floods, the Tempi accident, escalating inflation, the persisting conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing tensions in the Israel-Palestine region. Furthermore, it was an election year, with both national and local elections adding another layer of complexity to the landscape. As anticipated, the subjective well-being index has experienced a decline compared to the previous year, 2022. People of Greece mostly worry about their standard of living, including the rising cost of energy and many basic goods, as well as the possible impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the country. In conclusion, 2023 felt like a year of limited expectations, without much optimism for prosperity and growth. The pivotal question persists: how can the country and its people chart a course towards aspiring for a better Greece?

One persistent social concern that occupied our attention in the past year and is expected to remain a focal point in the future is the demographic issue and its implications for the country's
productivity and insurance models. Among Greek people’s proposed remedies are increasing the incentives for young couples to have children, integrating more young people in the country’s workforce, as well as setting up more daycare centers and kindergartens. Inclusion of more women and immigrants in the country’s workforce do not appear to be popular proposals. A national policy to integrate new demographic populations into the country's workforce seems necessary. 56% of Greeks advocate for religious marriage as the sole option regarding the cohabitation of couples, while 31% considering alternative methods for legalizing cohabitation and 12% do not express a clear stance on the matter.. Consequently, additional public debate on the issue is needed to illuminate all potential avenues and options for formalizing cohabitation.
A significant portion of Greek people holds a negative attitude towards the Roma community, prompting reflections on the openness of Greek society and its readiness to embrace diversity. The issue of juvenile violence, on the other hand, seems to be of particular concern to people of Greece, with a noteworthy one in four Greeks reporting having witnessed incidents involving juvenile violence and 17% having been subjected to violence by minors. Finally, studying gender bias, 44% of Greeks have at least one gender prejudice, with the percentage being even higher among young people (gen-z). The common assumption that young people are less prejudiced against gender discrimination is thus challenged, with the "social justice" and "cancel culture" generations expressing gender bias more often than their elders. There seems to be an urgent need for immediate and thorough educational intervention on issues of gender stereotypes and prejudices.

Business and Consumption
According to the Business Sector Trust Index, the technology-related industry garners the highest level of trust
among the public. Following closely are the Supermarkets and Bakeries/Dessert Industries. At the lower end of the trust index are TV Stations, Banks, Insurance Companies, and Energy Providers within the private sector. Consumers argue that there are three key factors that build trust in a business. Fair prices, product/service quality and customer focus. These are followed by good employers, nativeness of the company and its social sensitivity. The Black Friday sales period saw improved performance this year compared to 2022, as perceived by Greeks. Half of the consumers participated in the shopping spree for discounted items, and the discounts offered this year are viewed as better than those of the previous year.

Social media has become an integral part of the lives of the majority of Greeks, with distinct usage patterns across different age groups. Facebook is predominantly embraced by the older generations, while Millennials lean towards LinkedIn. Zoomers, on the other hand, are drawn to platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Users perceive these platforms as integral components of their lives, attributing to them various functions such as raising awareness about social issues, providing information, and contributing to decisionmaking pertaining political issues. Simultaneously, users acknowledge the platforms' role in spreading disinformation. This observation likely suggests the necessity for a more substantial presence of "valid information sources" within social media, rather than completely disengaging from these platforms. This
approach aims to enhance the prevalence of accurate and reliable information. When surveying citizens about their primary information sources, agerelated differences reveal a common triad: television, social media, and news sites. The coexistence of these three channels is well-established, but further clarification is required to understand the distinct roles and missions of each, considering their simultaneous presence with the other two. Pertaining television consumption, when considering the hours Greeks spend watching TV, it's reported that 60% corresponds to real-time viewing during the broadcast, while 40% is attributed to non-real-time viewing. Additionally, the breakdown reveals that 70% of this television viewership occurs on larger screens, such as big screen TVs, while the remaining 30% is distributed across smaller screens like phones, tablets, and laptops. The results shown above provide a clear indication for the need of revisiting the current model of measuring television viewing.

Institutions
People of Greece are consistently worried regarding the erosion of institutional credibility. This sentiment is evident in their advocacy for the removal of parliamentary immunity for all Members of Parliament, as
well as their strict stance towards individuals such as Eva Kaili, Alexis Georgoulis, and Pavlos Polakis. Similarly, their cynical outlook extends to the inquiry committee on the Tempi train crash, with the belief that neither the root causes nor the responsible parties will be unveiled. Perhaps their call to SYRIZA intra-party dissidents to be patient and wait for the party's convention (institutional process) points in the same direction. The responsibility for upholding the credibility of institutions lies predominantly with political leadership. However, the collective responsibility of safeguarding it pertains to each one of us. It is our expectation that the public's intolerance and unwavering expectations will manifest in the behaviors and choices of individuals in their daily lives. The People of Greece platform promises to include a more indepth exploration of the issue for 2024.

As early as February, it became apparent that the outcome of the May elections would depend on factors such as political stability and economic recovery. Throughout both the May and June elections, a prevailing sense of anxiety and fear characterized the atmosphere. In essence, voters exhibited a cautious approach, casting their ballots with a clear inclination towards stability. The Tempi accident significantly impacted Greek voters' perception of the government's credibility. However, despite this, the opposition struggled to present itself as a viable alternative. Citizens, faced with three choices, considered a stable government (NEA DEMOCRATIA), a potent opposition (SYRIZA or PASOK), or a diverse opposition comprising smaller parties. Among the small parties, the Plefsi Eleftherias party drew particular interest within this dynamic. The pre-election debate appeared to have notably favored Kyriakos Velopoulos while diminishing the standing of Yanis
Varoufakis. Other political leaders, on the other hand, experienced neither significant gains nor notable losses during the debate. Ultimately, the electoral dilemma articulated by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, posing the choice between “a stable government and one led by SYRIZA/PASOK/MERA25”, resonated with Greek voters.

Elections Local Government
During the local elections, the prevailing sentiment among voters was boredom. It is quite concerning for democracy when the institution of local government fails to garner acceptance and active participation. Fifty percent of Greeks express dissatisfaction with the quality of the candidate lists available to them, and the percentage of individuals who consider themselves "very informed" about the candidates is notably low. In the context of municipal elections, voters emphasize that the primary selection criterion is that “the candidate should be young and enthusiastic about the work”. On the other hand, for regional elections, the key factor is “the candidate's political program”. The low voter interest and elevated abstention rate played a significant role, among other factors, in reshaping the composition of the electorate between the first and second elections. This shift ultimately resulted in the ousting of Bakoyannis and the triumph of Doukas in the municipality of Athens. Additional factors contributing to his defeat include the electorate's perception that he did not align with the criterion of being young and eager to work, which was a primary consideration. Furthermore, the necessity to establish a robust opposition, unmet at the national level, sought an outlet at the municipal level,
potentially influencing the election outcome.

Greek citizens express optimism regarding the prospect of collaboration among center-left candidates in the European elections.
However, there is a prevailing concern that, in practice, this possibility may not materialize as anticipated. In addition, there is a positive sentiment among Greek citizens regarding the formation of a party with a left-wing and ecological agenda. This underscores the heightened interest of citizens in ecological matters, an expected sentiment given our firsthand experience with the impacts of the climate crisis.. Several lingering questions include: -How effectively is the ecological agenda incorporated into the platforms of existing parties? -Does the ecological agenda alone justify the establishment of a new political party? -Is the fusion of a left-wing and an ecological agenda a necessity, or can there be discussions about the viability of a right-wing party embracing ecological priorities?
