A Message from Dr. Berry, Superintendent As we step into the second half of the school year, there is a renewed sense of energy and purpose across Queen Creek Unified School District. Our classrooms are buzzing with learning, our campuses are alive with activity, and our students continue to impress us with their resilience, curiosity, and commitment to excellence. This time of year is about momentum—building on the strong foundation already in place and finishing the year with focus, pride, and confidence.

QCUSD is, at its core, a family-focused district grounded in strong values. We believe education is a partnership between schools and families, and we are proud to serve a community that places a high priority on character, respect, responsibility and service. Our schools work intentionally to create welcoming environments where students feel known, supported, and challenged, and where families feel connected, informed, and valued. These shared values shape not only what our students learn, but who they become.

Our district remains guided by clear priority areas and goals that keep student success at the center of everything we do. From maintaining a safe and healthy environment, to strengthening effective operations and systems, building meaningful partnerships, investing in exceptional personnel, and driving student success, each decision we make is grounded in what is best for our students— academically, socially, and emotionally.

Already this year, we have seen remarkable accomplishments. Students are excelling in the classroom, earning academic honors, mastering career and technical skills, and demonstrating leadership through arts, athletics, service, and innovation. Our teachers and staff continue to go above and beyond—challenging students, supporting families, and creating engaging learning environments where every child can grow and thrive. These successes are not accidental; they are the result of hard work, collaboration, and a shared belief in the potential of every student.

As we look toward the end of the school year, our focus sharpens. This is a critical time for growth— where goals turn into outcomes and effort turns into achievement. Whether students are preparing for graduation, transitioning to the next grade level, or discovering new passions, we are committed to ensuring they feel supported, inspired, and prepared for what comes next.

Tax Credit Donations at Work Desert Mountain Elementary

At Desert Mountain Elementary, every Arizona tax credit donation makes a real difference in the lives of students. From hands-on learning experiences to afterschool programs, contributions help provide opportunities that go beyond the classroom.

“Our ECA tax credit donations give kids experiences we couldn’t provide otherwise,” said a Desert Mountain teacher. “They directly support expanded learning opportunities and help our students thrive in so many ways.”

Thanks to generous donors, our students have enjoyed unforgettable field trips.

Students explored the creative world of the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Arizona, while sixth graders dove into the science behind Laser Tag Physics, tackled real STEM challenges, and even raced like pros at Andretti Indoor Karting. “I loved learning about how laser beams move and bounce,” said one fourth-grade student. “It made science a fun adventure!”

Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary Growing, Learning, and Laughing in Kindergarten at Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary Kindergarten at Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary is filled with bright smiles and the excitement of discovering something new every day. From the moment students walk through the doors, they are welcomed into classrooms where learning feels fun, purposeful, and full of possibility.

The kindergarten curriculum blends reading, writing, math, science, and social skills in meaningful ways. Students practice letter sounds, form words, and begin writing full sentences. In math, they explore number sense, patterns, and early problem-solving. “I’m learning how to skip count,” shared Blakely, smiling proudly. Others described working on handwriting and phonics. “We’re learning to write the letter H and what words start with H,” said Breckin. James added, “Right now, I’m learning my uppercase letters. I already learned my lowercase letters.”

Classrooms at Faith Mather Sossaman are warm and student-centered. Teachers create safe spaces where children feel encouraged and known.

When asked what makes their classroom special, Breckin answered simply, “The teachers are very sweet.” For James, the classroom is a place where he feels safe and comfortable.

Learning extends beyond the classroom, too.

Kindergarten students enjoy specials such as music, physical education, and library. “My favorite is the library because you get to read new books,” said Blakely. Others love music, where “we learn lots of songs,” Breckin explained.

Of course, play has an important place in the school day. Recess helps students build friendships and develop important social skills. “I like the playground. I swing on the swings,” said Breckin. For Blakely, lunch and recess are highlights, along with the excitement of celebrations and classroom traditions.

When asked why other children should come to Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary, students had the sweetest answer: “To learn.”

With caring teachers, engaging lessons, and a nurturing environment, Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary’s kindergarten program sets students up for confidence, curiosity, and success, not just for this year, but for years to come.

Growing Great Leaders at Frances Brandon Pickett Elementary At Frances Brandon Pickett Elementary, learning extends far beyond academics and into the way students treat one another each day. The school’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program helps create a positive, welcoming environment where students are encouraged to show kindness, respect, and integrity in everything they do. From classrooms to hallways, these values shape a school culture that students proudly embrace and actively lead.

Sixth-grade student leaders proudly describe PBIS as the foundation of their school culture. “PBIS is like doing something kind, respectful, or showing integrity during class,” shared Nicholas F., sixth-grade president. He explained that the program helps students grow into better people by encouraging them to support one another and make positive choices every day.

Those positive choices are recognized through “Mustang Moolah,” the school’s unique reward system. When students demonstrate PBIS values, whether by helping a classmate, showing respect in the hallways, or doing the right thing when no one is watching, they earn Mustang Moolah to use at the school store. Items range from simple prizes like pencils and bracelets to bigger rewards like LEGO sets, making PBIS both meaningful and fun.

More importantly, students say PBIS shapes who they are becoming. “It helps build your personality and teaches you how to treat people,” explained sixth-grade treasurer April V. Vice President Emma S. added that PBIS encourages students to help others simply because it’s the right thing to do, not because they’re being watched.

Across all interviews, one theme stood out clearly: students feel safe, supported, and valued at Pickett Elementary. Many described the campus as a happy, welcoming place filled with caring teachers and helpful classmates. Several students shared that they have attended Pickett since kindergarten and feel deeply connected to the school community.

With strong leadership, supportive teachers, and students who look out for one another, Frances Brandon Pickett Elementary shines as a place where positive behavior is practiced daily, and where students are growing into confident, compassionate leaders.

Grants in Action: Powering Learning at Gateway Polytechnic Academy At Gateway Polytechnic Academy, meaningful learning experiences are strengthened when educators are given the resources to support students in purposeful ways. This year, two teachers at GPA are enhancing instruction in their classrooms through QCSEF grants that directly support student growth, creativity, and academic success.

Music teacher Emily Stanton will use her grant to purchase Makey Makeys for a STEM-based project that allows fifth and sixth grade students to design and build their own instruments.

“Our students will have the opportunity to build their own instruments,” Stanton said. “This project helps them better understand how STEM concepts connect with Fine Arts while allowing them to create music in a new and innovative way.”

Stanton shared that the project provides students with a deeper, hands-on learning experience. “Providing our students with opportunities like this helps connect Fine Arts to core content areas and brings meaningful educational experiences to our students,” she said. “We are very grateful for the support from QCSEF and the opportunity this grant provides.”

In another GPA classroom, teacher Kelli Gordon is using her QCSEF grant to support students who need additional help with reading. The grant funds hands-on manipulatives designed to reinforce phonics and reading skills through kinesthetic learning. “Reading should be taught in a way that improves memory, focus, and engagement,” Gordon explained. “These tools help strengthen the neural pathways needed for effective learning.”

Gordon noted that the additional resources allow her to better support students who are struggling. “I can work with students in small groups to reinforce phonics concepts and increase retention and understanding,” she said. She also emphasized the importance of external support. “These funds allow me to provide what I know is best for my students without a financial burden on my family.”

Through QCSEF grants, Gateway Polytechnic Academy teachers are able to implement thoughtful, studentcentered strategies that enrich instruction and create lasting academic impact.

Building Community, Supporting Students: The Jack Barnes Elementary PTO At Jack Barnes Elementary, the Parent Teacher Organization is the heartbeat of school spirit, community connection, and meaningful support for teachers and students. PTO President Robyn Luby leads a powerhouse team of caring, committed parents: Amy Martinez serves as Vice President, Aubrey Schultz is Secretary, Hope Williams is Treasurer, and Stephanie Wassmuth serves as Member at Large. Together, they pour countless hours into creating joyful experiences for students and thoughtful support for staff.

“Our mission is to support JBE while bringing families, students, and our community together.” Luby shared.

One of the PTO’s favorite moments this year was the annual Boo Bash. Families enjoyed face painting, bounce houses, balloon animals, games, and a fun Table or Treat with twelve local businesses. Best of all, the event was completely free for families. In place of admission, families donated food to the QCUSD Resource Center, showing generosity and school pride. “Our families really showed up,” Luby said. “We truly brought everyone together.”

The PTO also brings excitement to school every day. Members cheer students on during spirit days, dress in costume, and often show up just to spread smiles. Each quarter, students enjoy appreciation treats such as Rice Krispies on National Rice Krispies Day and cookies on National Cookie Day. The goal is always the same. Keep things fun, welcoming, and accessible for everyone.

Staff support is a major priority as well. The popular Wednesday spirit fundraiser raised $7,900 last year, with every dollar going directly back into classrooms. The PTO stocks the staff lounge, provides meals during conference weeks, hosts appreciation celebrations, and runs monthly raffles to recognize staff members who go above and beyond.

Looking ahead, the PTO is excited to continue building community and is working toward providing a new shade structure, made possible through outstanding family and community support.

“We love our school, staff, students, and community,” Luby said.

“We hope everything we do helps make JBE a place everyone feels proud to call home.”

Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary Teachers Inspire and Uplift Students At Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, teachers go above and beyond to help students grow academically and personally. From preschool to sixth grade, educators create classrooms where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to learn.

Amy Jones, a first-grade teacher, explained, “While teaching first grade, my students learn the foundation of reading and writing. I’m teaching the lifelong skills that they’ll need for the rest of their lives.” She emphasizes handson learning and collaboration, where students work together to complete projects and explore new ideas. “I like seeing the energy on their face when they learn something new. It just makes my teaching heart happy,” Jones added.

Second-grade teacher Autumn Page focuses not only on academics but also on character development. “Students in my class don’t only learn how to read, write, and do math. They learn to be kind and respectful. They learn to be curious learners,” she shared. Page makes her classroom a safe space where every student feels heard and celebrated, starting each day with greetings and hugs.

One Preschool instructional assistant at KMBE finds joy in empowering young learners. “My favorite part of this job is helping children understand that they can do hard things and be their best version every day,” Instructional assistant Liz Loomis echoed the sentiment, saying, “My favorite part of the job is building meaningful connections with students and supporting them in their learning. The students’ energy is contagious, and the staff is always caring and supportive.”

The dedication of KMBE teachers and staff is evident in every classroom. Their focus on academic excellence, character growth, and community makes KMBE a place where students thrive. As Amy Jones summed up, “Every kid matters. Your learning is important to us.”

Where Creativity Takes Flight Inside Mountain Trail Academy’s Skyhawk Nest

Mountain Trail Academy is buzzing with creativity, collaboration and discovery, especially inside its STEAM Lab known as the Skyhawk Nest. This dynamic space is where students bring ideas to life while developing skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Recently, second grade students took on a festive engineering challenge during a jingle bell maze activity. Working in teams, students designed and built Lego mazes with one goal in mind. Get the jingle bell through the maze as quickly as possible. Along the way, students practiced teamwork, time management and project planning while testing designs and making improvements.

The Skyhawk Nest is more than just a lab. It is a place where students feel encouraged to explore, create and try again. One student shared, “We get to make fun stuff in STEAM. We can make cars and robots. It’s fun.” Another added that the best part is the feeling of success when a project finally works, saying it makes them feel “really happy, like very happy.”

Beyond the hands-on learning, the culture at Mountain Trail Academy shines just as brightly.

Students consistently describe the school as welcoming and inclusive. “Everybody’s friends with you,” one student explained. “They treat each other nicely.” Another proudly stated, “Everyone is included here.”

The Skyhawk Nest offers a wide range of STEAM experiences, from building robots to designing creative challenges like gingerbread traps and goal setting projects for the new year. “We get to create stuff and figure fun scientific things out,” a student said.

“We get to build a lot of things and it’s been really fun.”

Students also appreciate the supportive teachers who guide them through the learning process. One student shared, “My teacher is super sweet and she will help me out with anything I need.”

At Mountain Trail Academy, the Skyhawk Nest is where curiosity takes flight, confidence grows and students discover the joy of learning through innovation and imagination.

Fire Safety and Fun at Queen Creek Elementary 3rd-grade students at Queen Creek Elementary gathered with excitement when they received a visit from the Queen Creek Fire Department. Students were eager to learn important lessons about fire safety, but also walked away with a deeper appreciation for the many opportunities that Queen Creek Elementary School provides them with every day.

Firefighters shared practical tips about staying safe, creating a family escape plan, and knowing when and how to call for help.

Students listened closely as they saw gear up close and watched demonstrations. “I learned that firefighters are helpers and we can be calm and listen during emergencies,” one student shared. Another added, “My favorite part was seeing the truck and learning how they work together as a team.”

That same sense of teamwork is woven through everything at Queen Creek Elementary. From hands-on science projects to engaging reading programs, students are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and discover their strengths. Leadership clubs, technology opportunities, arts programs, and service-learning experiences provide students with opportunities to build confidence and try something new.

Teachers work side by side with students, guiding them to think creatively and problem solve.

Families are welcomed as partners, and community connections like the visit from the fire department help students see how their learning connects to the world beyond the classroom.

At Queen Creek Elementary, safety, curiosity, and opportunity go hand in hand. Moments like this visit remind students that they are supported by an entire community that believes in them, encourages them to dream big, and helps them grow into capable, caring leaders.

Silver Valley Students Discover the Wonders of Agriculture at Queen Creek High School Silver Valley Elementary students stepped into the world of agriculture during an exciting farm day field trip to Queen Creek High School, where learning came to life through hands-on experiences, animals, and student leadership. The visit transformed a field on campus into an interactive outdoor classroom, with several stations set up for students to explore everything from livestock to farm skills like roping.

Leading the day were members of Queen Creek High School FFA, including senior and FFA President Natalie Jones. “Queen Creek High School has a lot of opportunities that are offered to students,” Jones shared. “Whether you want to be more on the animal side, the plant side, or take on a leadership role, that is all provided by this program.”

Senior Madison Profitt echoed that excitement as she talked about inspiring younger students. “Hopefully, seeing this helps them realize there actually is a school where they can raise an animal and pursue agriculture,” she said. “A lot of kids do not even know what all these animals are, so this opens their eyes to new opportunities.”

For Silver Valley students, the day was full of discovery. One student said their favorite part was simple and sweet. “Probably the bunny,” they said.

When asked why, the answer came quickly. “Because it was really soft.” Another student shared how much they learned. “I get to learn about them because I do not know many facts about all these animals,” they said, proudly adding, “There are 45 breeds of rabbits.”

Beyond fun facts, the day connected students to where food comes from. “It gives kids the opportunity to know where their food comes from,” Jones explained. “They get to see the behind the scenes of what America produces.”

By the end of the trip, curiosity was sparked and excitement was clear. As one Silver Valley student put it simply, “Yes! It makes me want to learn more about animals.”

Leaders, Learners, and Heart at Schnepf Elementary At Schnepf Elementary, students are welcomed into classrooms where learning feels like family, and every child is encouraged to grow, question, and lead. The heart of the school is its dedicated staff, whose commitment to students shines through in every lesson, every conversation, and every celebration of success.

Second grade teacher Jill Moffitt is one teacher who embodies the spirit that makes Schnepf so special. Inspired by the teachers who shaped her own education, she felt called to make a difference. “I had teachers that were phenomenal,” she shared. “And I also had a couple of teachers that I thought we could do a little bit better. I knew I could go into the field and try to make the difference with students in their lives.”

When choosing where to teach, Jill was drawn to Queen Creek Unified School District and Schnepf Elementary because of their shared sense of purpose. “I looked at their mission and vision. I wanted to be part of a school that had the same values and direction that I wanted to go,” she said.

In her classroom, students learn far more than reading, math, science, and writing. Schnepf is a Leader in Me school, meaning students practice leadership skills, responsibility, and goal setting. “Students learn how to become leaders in the classroom as well,” Jill explained.

Creating a safe, welcoming environment is at the center of everything. “My classroom is a family classroom,” she said. “Students feel free to make mistakes and learn and grow at their individual level.”

That same sense of care extends across campus. “We have an amazing group of students, families, and staff. The staff are very dedicated. They work hard. They love the kids here,” Jill shared.

For families choosing a school, Jill’s message is clear: “You should choose QCUSD as your district because we are dedicated. We work hard. We have the students’ best interests at heart, and we will do everything we can to make them learners and leaders.”

Newell Barney College Prep: Preparing Students to Lead, Think, and Succeed Newell Barney College Prep is known across QCUSD for challenging students academically while supporting them in a welcoming, focused environment. Principal Aikins says it best: “Here, students are challenged every day through our accelerated curriculum. We focus on helping students think critically, problem-solve, and prepare for high school success.”

Students at NBCP benefit from opportunities that help them plan ahead and explore their interests. “At Newell Barney College Prep, we start helping students think about their futures early,” Principal Aikins explains.

“Through career exploration and goal setting, students learn how their education connects to real-world opportunities.”

STEM plays a major role on campus. Through Project Lead the Way and the award-winning robotics program, students experience learning in action. “Project Lead the Way is a hands-on STEM program where students design, build, and create while developing problem-solving skills,” says Aikins. “It’s all about learning by doing.” Robotics offers even more opportunities for collaboration and innovation as students code, engineer, and compete.

Athletics are another strong part of the Newell Barney experience. Students compete in AIA sports while learning responsibility and teamwork. “We believe in working hard and playing hard,” Aikins shares. “Our students learn what it means to be part of a team in the classroom and on the field.”

Families across the district also appreciate the accessibility of NBCP. “Students from all over QCUSD attend our school,” Aikins says.

“We offer transportation from schools across the district, so access to accelerated education is never a barrier.”

Perhaps the greatest strength of Newell Barney College Prep is its people. “Our teachers are the best of the best — highly qualified, passionate, and dedicated to helping students reach their full potential,” says Aikins. That commitment shapes the school culture, where students are “focused, respectful, and motivated to achieve.”

With opportunities to earn up to four high school credits before moving on, students leave Newell Barney prepared, confident, and ready for what comes next.

A Place Where Students Thrive at Queen Creek Junior High Queen Creek Junior High School is a place where students feel challenged, supported, and inspired every day. Families are welcomed to campus with warmth from staff and can see the pride students have in learning. The focus is simple and powerful: to help every student grow and succeed.

Instructional aide Kristin Anderson shared why she chose to be part of this community. “I wanted to work somewhere where I can make an impact in a meaningful way,” she said.

Kristin supports students in a Special Education classroom. “I help instruct with science, math, and ELA. We also focus on social skills that we try to help them apply outside of the classroom.” She adds that her goal each day is to build trust. “I come in with a positive attitude and try to be a trusted adult so students feel confident learning.”

Kristin believes that the heart of the school lies in its people. “My favorite thing about the students and staff is that they are kind. It is a daily reminder of the great community we have here in Queen Creek.” She proudly shares, “The schools here are strong, and the staff is genuinely invested in student success.”

Eighth-grade science teacher Diane Maynard agrees. Her journey into teaching began at home. “Helping my kids showed me how much I really like working with children,” she said. In her classroom, students explore many areas of science. “My favorite part of the job is when kids get that moment when they put together what they previously knew with the information I am giving them. My favorite unit is genetics because it pertains so much to them.”

Relationships matter as much as lessons. “I make a habit of talking to kids about things that have nothing to do with school. I want them to know I am interested in more than just their science brain,” Diane shared. She loves the staff culture as well. “Everyone pitches in when someone needs help. We are a really cohesive team.”

Her message to families is simple. “We make students the most important part of what we do. Your student will be supported here.”

Preparing for the Future How CTE Sports Medicine Empowers Crismon High Students Career and Technical Education (CTE) at Crismon High School is opening doors for students by pairing rigorous academics with meaningful, hands-on learning. For students in the Sports Medicine pathway, the classroom often stretches well beyond classroom walls and right onto the sidelines.

Shane W. joined the Sports Medicine program after hearing great things from friends. “I thought it was a cool course,” he said. “I knew friends who had taken it, and they had gotten to do some really cool things working with athletes on campus.”

His experience has exceeded expectations. “I’ve gotten to go to football games and work alongside our athletic trainers, Nick and Jordan.”

Students gain real-world skills through certifications, competitions, and partnerships with local professionals. One powerful example was a “Stop the Bleed” course. “We learned how to tourniquet and keep someone from bleeding out,” Shane explained. These experiences are shaping his future goals. “I still want to be in the sports field,” he shared. “I want to be in sports journalism, and this helps me know what’s happening on the field with injuries and on the sideline.”

Sophomore Isabella S. feels the program is preparing her for a future in physical therapy. “Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a physical therapist,” she said. “I’ve learned all the injuries, all of the rehab mechanisms — things I’ll take into my job.” She also values the competitions, like HOSA. “You compete with teams from all over the medical field,” she said. “The TSA certification will put us about two years ahead of other students going into sports medicine.”

Both students agree that the program builds confidence and opportunity. “It gives you more experience,” said Shane. “It makes it easier to get jobs and internships.” Isabella encourages other students to jump in. “It’s a lot of fun. If you’re really interested, take it. What you put in now, you’ll get back later.”

At Crismon High School, CTE is more than a class, it is preparation for college, careers, and life.

Eastmark NNDCC: A Pathway to Character, Commitment, and Community At Eastmark High School, leadership is practiced in formation, learned through teamwork, and built one respectful decision at a time. The Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC), often thought of as a pathway to the military, is really about preparing students to lead in life.

“JROTC is a program that helps individuals build leadership skills and understand what it is to be on time, show up and be respectful of other people’s time,” said eighth grader Corbyn Casey. “Leadership isn’t bossing people around. It’s communicating and letting others know their opinion matters.”

As an NNDCC site, Eastmark’s program is Navy-sponsored, preparing students with structure, service, and characterbuilding experiences, without requiring military commitment.

“We are recognized by the Navy, but you don’t have to join the military,” explained senior chief petty officer Athena Gutierrez. “You can apply what you learn to college, to leadership, to life.”

Athena says the program helped her grow stronger both mentally and physically. “I’ve learned to keep my cool. Instead of yelling, I guide people and give clear instructions. It’s easier for them to listen, and I’ve become a better leader.”

From community parades to color guard events and service projects, cadets see firsthand how their work connects to the world around them. “We helped at Veterans Day, did flag-folding, and worked on cleanups,” shared cadet leader Raiden Prokop. “People should join because it helps you become a better U.S. citizen.”

Students also discover new friendships and surprising talents, whether learning air rifle marksmanship, participating in drill team, or preparing for Annual Military Inspection.

“It’s an awesome program,” Corbyn added. “You build leadership, discipline and lifelong friendships.”

And it all happens in a supportive school environment.

“Students should come to Eastmark because it’s a great school with so many opportunities,” Athena said.

“Teachers are helpful, the coaches care, and there’s always something to get involved in.”

At Eastmark High School, NNDCC is more than uniforms and formations — it’s a powerful pathway to confidence, character, and success.

Student Spotlight: Natalie Jones — Finding Her Passion for Agriculture At Queen Creek High School, students discover new strengths every day, and the FFA program plays a big role in that experience. It gives students hands-on opportunities, meaningful leadership roles, and a strong sense of belonging. For senior Natalie Jones, FFA has become the place where her interests and her future truly came together.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Natalie grew up surrounded by open land, goats, chickens, and even experienced bull riding. “When we moved to Arizona, we lived in a neighborhood without land, so joining FFA helped me reconnect with that part of my life,” she said. Attending her first FFA event as a freshman, she remembers seeing the familiar animals and feeling like she was home again. “It became a constant for me,” she added.

That sense of belonging has been strengthened by caring mentors. “Ms. Schuck has been my biggest mentor. She’s always supported me academically and personally,” Natalie shared. She also credits Mr. Payne for understanding her FFA responsibilities while helping her stay on track in class.

Natalie has now shown pigs for three years, something she never expected to do. One unforgettable lesson came when her pig became sick right before the fair. “It was stressful, but so many people stepped in to help. That’s what I love about agriculture. It’s about the people and the support, not just competition.”

As FFA President, Natalie leads with collaboration and calm. “Being president isn’t about making all the decisions. It’s about helping your team work together and succeed,” she said. She is especially proud to be setting an example for younger students, including her sister, who serves as Greenhand President.

Balancing school, FFA, and her job as a lifeguard takes organization and communication. Looking ahead, Natalie plans to study animal science and agricultural business, beginning at Central Arizona College before transferring to the University of Arizona. “FFA has really shown me what’s possible after high school,” she said, and her future is clearly bright.

What Is QCVA? Queen Creek Virtual Academy is the online school option in the Queen Creek Unified School District in Arizona. It serves students by giving them the flexibility to learn from home while following the district’s calendar.

At Queen Creek Virtual Academy, curriculum delivery is tailored to different grade levels using online learning platforms. Elementary students in grades K–6 learn through SchoolsPLP, while students in grades 7–12 use Imagine Edgenuity. Across all grade levels, QCVA provides access to core academic subjects as well as a wide range of electives, honors courses, and Advanced Placement options, all aligned with state standards. To ensure student success, facilitators offer support through small group instruction, one-on-one virtual meetings, tutoring, and live sessions via Google Meet, giving learners both flexibility and personalized guidance.

Students enrolled in Queen Creek Virtual Academy are expected to dedicate about 25 hours per week to their studies, which includes both online coursework and offline assignments. To remain active in their courses, students must log their weekly work time—such as completing assignments, studying, or attending tutoring—through ParentVUE. Failure to record this information may result in deactivation of their courses. In addition, students who show no activity for ten consecutive days risk being withdrawn from the program.

One of the key strengths of Queen Creek Virtual Academy is the flexibility it offers, allowing students to complete coursework at times that fit their individual needs and family schedules. This structure is especially beneficial for students with non-traditional routines or those who thrive outside the standard school day.

QCVA also provides a wide range of course offerings, including electives, honors, and Advanced Placement classes, which might not always be available at every brick-and-mortar campus.

Additionally, the school has a strong graduation rate, reflecting its ability to support students in successfully completing their academic journey.

Queen Creek Virtual Academy can be an excellent choice for students who need greater flexibility in their schedules due to travel, health, work, or other commitments. It is well-suited for independent learners who manage their time effectively and for those seeking access to courses not offered at nearby schools or who prefer an alternative to the traditional classroom setting.

However, QCVA may be less ideal for students who thrive on daily in-person social interaction, rely on consistent face-to-face supervision, or require extensive special support services and hands-on accommodations.

Every day across Queen Creek Unified School District, dedicated staff members work behind the scenes to keep students safe, supported, and connected. For Walter Restrepo, serving as a SPED router is more than a job. It is a calling rooted in community and care.

“My role is to make sure our special needs kids are routed. I make sure they get to school safe and make sure they get home safe,” Walter explained. The responsibility is significant, but for him, the reward is even greater. “I just love to be part of the community. I love helping families that need help. It gives me happiness.”

Walter joined QCUSD after years in the corporate world, seeking purpose over paperwork. “I was tired of working for the corporate world. Here, I know I make a change for the community,” he said. Knowing his work matters — both now and for the future — motivates him every day.

Creating a positive work environment is also important to Walter. “You just laugh, have fun, and make sure we always work with each other. We are a family,” he shared. That sense of belonging has grown into meaningful relationships. “They are my family. I sometimes spend more time with them here than at home. They are my brothers and sisters.”

For anyone considering joining QCUSD, Walter’s message is simple and heartfelt. “You should choose QCUSD because it offers you the chance to be part of the community.

If you want to make your community better, this is the place. It helps you develop lifelong friendships with your coworkers.”

Harvesting Health: Bringing ArizonaGrown Goodness to QCUSD Schools The Child Nutrition Department continues to make meaningful strides as we work to provide nutritious, high-quality meals that support the health and well-being of all QCUSD students.

One of our proudest accomplishments this year is the expansion of our partnerships with local farms. Through the Sun Produce Cooperative, we source Arizona-grown fruits and vegetables from Agritopia, Crooked Sky Farms, TruLocal, Healing Earth Farms, and several other family farms. Buying local is not only an investment in our community, it is a direct investment in the health of our students. Locally grown produce is harvested at peak ripeness, which means it retains more vitamins, minerals, and natural flavor compared to produce that travels long distances. Because it spends less time in transport and storage, the nutrient quality remains higher, giving students fresher, healthier options every day.

In addition to strengthening our farm-to-school efforts, we are working proactively to meet the new Arizona state regulations on ultra-processed foods. Our team has completed a comprehensive review of our menus and identified the items affected by the updated standards. We are collaborating closely with vendors and manufacturers as they reformulate products or offer alternative items that meet the new requirements while still aligning with student preferences and expectations.

As these changes roll out, families may notice some gradual menu updates. These may include cleaner-label snacks, reformulated versions of familiar items free of dyes or certain additives, and an increase in scratch-cooked foods as we reduce reliance on processed products. Some menu items may shift temporarily while compliant versions become available, but we remain committed to maintaining student favorites whenever possible.

Our focus on student experience extends beyond menu development. We continue to invest heavily in staff training to ensure every cafeteria provides excellent customer service and consistent meal quality. From culinary techniques to food safety to customer engagement, our team is dedicated to creating a positive, welcoming cafeteria environment for all students.

Overall, this year reflects significant progress, thoughtful planning, and strong community partnerships. We remain committed to supporting student wellness, elevating meal quality, and continuously improving our Child Nutrition program for the families we serve.

Community Education: Opportunities for Students and Families Across QCUSD Queen Creek Unified School District’s Community Education Department provides valuable programs and services designed to support students, families, and the greater community. From child care to enrichment opportunities, these programs ensure that learning, growth, and connection extend well beyond the school day.

Discovery Kids Child Care The Discovery Kids program offers beforeand after-school child care for students in grades K–6 at all 10 elementary schools.

Currently, 924 students are enrolled in the program, which also provides child care during QCUSD breaks, including summer, fall, winter, and spring. This flexible, reliable option gives families peace of mind while students engage in safe, fun, and meaningful activities.

Preschool Programs Tuition-based preschool is available at Gateway Polytechnic Academy, Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, Queen Creek Elementary, Silver Valley Elementary, Mountain Trail Academy, and Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary. With 571 children enrolled, these classes are taught by certified teachers and offer both half-day and fullday options. Openings are still available at select sites, giving more families the chance to provide their young learners with a strong start.

Youth Athletic Programs (YAP) The Youth Athletic Program is available at all 15 schools across the district. Led by QCUSD coaches, YAP provides a wide variety of camps and clinics throughout the school year, encouraging students to stay active, build skills, and enjoy the spirit of teamwork.

After-school Enrichment Opportunities Students also have the chance to participate in unique after-school enrichment programs throughout the district. Offerings range from art and drawing to 3D printing, chess, and STEM-based activities. These programs allow students to explore new interests and strengthen creativity outside the classroom.

Facility Rentals Beyond student programs, Community Education also provides facility rentals yearround. Schools across the district are available to host events, meetings, and activities, creating meaningful partnerships and offering community members a place to gather and connect.

Building Transparency, Stewardship, and Trust in QCUSD QCUSD Business Services Department Update

As Queen Creek Unified School District continues to grow, so does its commitment to financial transparency, responsible planning, and community partnership. This quarter’s updates highlight how QCUSD manages public resources with accountability, from annual financial reporting and long-term capital planning to community engagement and staff recognition.

Together, these efforts reinforce the district’s promise to support student success through thoughtful and strategic stewardship.

FY25 Annual Financial Report: A Transparent Look at District Resources Each fall, QCUSD publishes its Annual Financial Report (AFR), a comprehensive, state-required summary of the district’s financial activity for the prior fiscal year. Mandated by A.R.S. §15-904 and submitted to the Arizona Auditor General, the AFR ensures public accountability by detailing all revenues, expenditures, and fund balances. For FY25, QCUSD reported approximately $227 million in total expenditures, including $113.8 million in Maintenance & Operations and $12.8 million in capital outlay. An additional $57.9 million in state-funded new school construction supported major projects such as Mountain Trail Academy and new classroom additions at Crismon and Eastmark high schools.

The district also conducted its annual public meeting on Bond and M&O Override expenditures, reaffirming QCUSD’s operational transparency and commitment to maintaining small class sizes, competitive teacher salaries, and strong academic and extracurricular programs. The voter-approved reauthorization, will guide reporting on the reprioritization in FY26.

Updated Capital Plan: Proactive Planning for a Growing Community QCUSD recently presented an updated Capital Plan designed to address both current and longterm facility needs. As a “living” document, the plan evolves with enrollment growth, facility conditions, and district priorities ensuring QCUSD remains forward-thinking and resourceconscious.

The plan focuses on five main categories: Renovations to modernize and enhance aging facilities Planned Maintenance to extend the life of district assets Transportation to maintain a safe and reliable fleet Technology to support digital learning and district operations Master Planning for the thoughtful design of future schools Multiple funding sources support these efforts, including District Additional Assistance, leases, and state School Facilities Division grants. With no active bond or capital override, QCUSD relies on strategic prioritization and responsible financial management to sustain safe, effective, and inspiring learning environments.

From Curious Learners to Creators: Hour of Code at QCUSD This December, students across the Queen Creek Unified School District participated in Hour of Code over the week of December 8th. This is a hands-on introduction to computer science and coding designed for every learner from kindergarten through high school. This initiative continues the tradition of fun, free, one-hour activities that help students explore how technology works.

What makes Hour of Code special is its focus on accessibility. Students of all ages and skill levels can participate, whether they have never coded before or are already tech-curious. These activities are not lectures or advanced programming classes; instead, students try hands-on, easy-to-follow activities, explore how coding works behind everyday tools, and build confidence through fun, creative challenges.

The goal is not to create students who are professional programmers overnight. Rather, Hour of Code is designed to demystify technology, spark curiosity, and show students that they are capable of understanding and shaping the tools of the future. Through problem-solving challenges, students learn to think logically, persevere in the face of obstacles, and use creativity to design effective solutions— skills that benefit them in every career, from business and healthcare to trades and public service.

QCUSD’s participation ensures that students have meaningful opportunities to explore coding and technology in a supportive, engaging environment. By dedicating just one hour, students gain confidence, curiosity, and a foundation in skills that will prepare them for the digital world.

With MyRide K12, you’ll have access to your child’s bus routing information directly from your smartphone or device. Most importantly, this app is how we will communicate any route delays, schedule changes, or important updates regarding your child’s transportation. This means no more guessing if the bus is late or changes have been made—you’ll receive realtime notifications.
