Desert Mountain Elementary Focusing on Students, Values, and Growth

The 2025–2026 school year is off to a strong start at Desert Mountain Elementary, where Principal Dr. Amber Allen has been busy building connections and guiding the school community toward continued success.

Dr. Allen says the highlight of her first few months has been the people. “The most rewarding part of my first few months as principal has definitely been getting to know my students and staff,” she shared. “Building relationships with them has given me insight into their strengths and unique personalities. This foundation makes all the hard work worthwhile and energizes me to keep striving for the best for our school community.”

Inside the classrooms, exciting learning practices are taking place every day. One that Dr. Allen points to is visible learning, which encourages students to explain their thinking and provide evidence for their answers. “I’ve seen students explaining to other students how they solved a math problem or made an inference based on evidence in a text,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see students take ownership of their learning and communicate their ideas clearly.”

The Desert Mountain community plays an important role in the school’s success as well.

Families recently came together for a fundraiser at Queen Creek Marketplace, where staff scooped ice cream for supporters. The school’s PTO continues to be a vital partner in organizing events and creating opportunities that enrich the student experience.

Looking ahead, Dr. Allen is focused on building academic growth and preparing students for the future. “Our mission statement is ‘Kid by kid, skill by skill,’” she explained. “We are focused on increasing math and reading proficiency while also preparing students for junior high and beyond. By fostering a strong foundation in both learning and character, we will help our students succeed now and in the future.”

With strong leadership, dedicated staff, and a supportive community, Desert Mountain Elementary is well-positioned for a year of growth and achievement.

Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary Spotlight on Teachers Who Inspire When walking through the halls of Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary (FMSE), you will find classrooms full of energy, creativity, and teachers who are passionate about helping every child succeed. The staff at FMSE are more than teachers; they are motivators and community builders who make learning come alive for their students.

For sixth-grade teacher Meeghan Leyva, teaching is about giving her students opportunities to think differently. “The students work on reasoning quite a bit. They work a lot of story problems. They work vertically on their boards as a way to make it more engaging. My students make my job fun.”

Leyva believes her success comes from the environment at FMSE, where staff support one another and put students first. “The staff is supportive and wonderful, but it really is all about the students and what they’re willing to show, how hard they’re willing to work,” she said.

“You should choose QCUSD because I believe we just have the best staff, the best students.

We want the students to grow into amazing human beings, and we try our hardest every day to make that happen.”

“Third-grade teacher Sara Hardwick shares a similar passion. As a founding member of FMSE, she has watched the school grow while remaining true to its values. “I helped open FMSE, and I love it here. We have the best community that is super involved, our families and kids love learning,” she said. Hardwick, who also lives in the community, treasures the sense of connection. “It’s very united. Being here from the beginning, opening FMSE, I’ve gotten to know all of the families. Everybody is just so welcoming and kind and flexible. We just work as a team here.”

For Hardwick, preparing students for the future is at the heart of her work. “Here at QCUSD, we look at the whole child, so we focus on preparing them for the real world. We give these kids many opportunities throughout their years of learning so that they are ready to enter the real world. Just making them excited for learning, making the student number one, and making them feel welcome.”

At FMSE, the dedication of teachers like Leyva and Hardwick makes the school not only a place of learning but also a community where students are encouraged to become the best versions of themselves.

Frances Brandon-Pickett Elementary Celebrates 20 Years of Excellence Frances Brandon-Pickett Elementary recently celebrated a significant milestone, marking 20 years of educating students and building community. Families, staff, alumni, and district leaders joined together to honor the Pickett’s history and its role in the Queen Creek community.

Principal Stacy Duke set the tone for the celebration, honoring the school’s namesake. “Frances Brandon-Pickett was an artist and an educator,” Duke said. “We are honored to carry her name as we continue inspiring students and celebrating excellence in education.”

“This milestone is about more than just our history. It is about the bright future we are building together.”

The celebration was not only about the past but also about the lasting traditions that make Frances Brandon-Pickett an exceptional place.

Superintendent Dr. Perry Berry reflected on the school’s deep roots in the community. “When these doors first opened in 2005, it was not just about starting a new school. It was about building a community,” he said. “Over the past two decades, this school has served more than 10,000 students and has become the heart of Queen Creek.”

Longtime teacher Mr. Webster, who has taught at the school for its entire history, shared his journey. “Elementary is where I belong,” he said. “It is the time of my life that I loved the most when I was a kid, and I love getting to share that with all of you. I cannot imagine my life over the last 20 years anywhere else.”

Webster also spoke proudly of watching his own children grow up at Frances Brandon-Pickett, with one becoming a teacher in the district and another pursuing a career in professional sports. His story reflects the generational impact of the school.

As Frances Brandon-Pickett looks toward the future, its history stands as a testament to the dedication of teachers, the support of families, and the achievements of thousands of students.

Principal Duke captured the spirit of the day, saying, “This milestone is about more than just our history. It is about the bright future we are building together.”

Gateway Polytechnic Academy PTO Creates Lasting Impact for Students and Families At Gateway Polytechnic Academy (GPA), the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) plays a vital role in shaping a positive and engaging school community. From projects that improve campus life to events that bring families together, the PTO’s work reflects the school's values of collaboration, connection, and care.

One recent accomplishment the PTO is proud of is the installation of shade sails above the playground swings. In Arizona’s heat, the swings often went unused for parts of the year. Now, students can enjoy one of their favorite activities year-round, and nearby classrooms benefit from the extra shade as well.

“It was truly a win-win and something we could only accomplish because of the amazing support from our GPA families,” the PTO shared.

The PTO also creates opportunities for families to connect outside the classroom. One highlight has been the “Hike with Coach” series, led by Coach Warnock and the WatchDOGS group. Families gather at San Tan Mountain Regional Park for themed hikes, like a black-light scorpion hunt or a planetary parade hike when all the planets were aligned. These events are free, educational, and fun, making school feel welcoming for both students and their families.

Memorable moments this year include welcoming students back with Jett the Jet, GPA’s mascot, on the first day of school and hosting a back-to-school trivia night. The trivia night not only provided an evening of fun but also allowed families to donate a large amount of food to the Queen Creek Resource Center.

Supporting teachers and staff is also at the heart of the PTO’s mission. From monthly meals and classroom grants to providing volunteers for copies and classroom needs, the PTO works to ensure teachers feel appreciated and supported. “We always look for a way to say yes,” they explained, emphasizing how teacher feedback helps guide many of their projects.

Looking ahead, the PTO is preparing for its much-anticipated Carnival in November and plans to double the number of Chromebooks in younger grade classrooms. They’re also expanding programs like ART Masterpiece, continuing their service projects, and strengthening student involvement in family events.

QCUSD is proud to celebrate the GPA PTO and extends heartfelt thanks to all PTOs across the district for the countless ways they support students, staff, and families every day.

Jack Barnes Elementary Teacher Julie McBride Creates a Home for Students At Jack Barnes Elementary, teachers are the foundation of a school community that feels like family. For over a decade, Julie McBride has been a part of that heart, inspiring students with lessons that extend far beyond academics.

McBride was drawn to Jack Barnes because of the close-knit environment. “Jack Barnes was just a small school, a small community, and I really liked the feel of it,” she shared. “I think I could touch many hearts here.” Ten years later, she continues to make a difference, helping students feel safe, cared for, and capable of success.

In her classroom, McBride focuses not only on academics but also on the values that shape character. “They learn how to be kind and respectful. They learn organizational skills. They learn how to take responsibility for their actions and how to persevere,” she explained. Her approach begins with making every child feel seen. “Once they feel that they are cared about, learning will take place.”

For McBride, Jack Barnes truly is a second home. “Jack Barnes is a family. It’s a home away from home. The staff here is very kind. And so are the parents and students,” she said. That family-like culture is what makes the school special and creates a place where children want to learn and grow.

Her impact also extends beyond academics. “When you build that relationship, they know they can come to you if they’re struggling with something,” McBride said. “That’s when they can truly be happy and successful.”

Jack Barnes is one of many schools in Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD) where dedicated teachers like McBride make all the difference. “You should choose QCUSD because it’s a great community,” she added. “It’s growing, and we need great teachers who love children.”

Jack Barnes Elementary shows how a powerful and caring school environment can be one where students learn, grow, and know they are valued every step of the way.

Leadership at KMBE “By helping others I can understand their problems and they might have the same as mine, so they can also help me while I help them,” At Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, preschool to sixth-grade students are learning how to lead with integrity, kindness, and confidence through the 7 Habits program. The Leader in Me framework gives students real opportunities to apply these habits every day, helping them grow as learners and as people inside and out of the classroom.

Sixth grader Seth L. shared what leadership means to him. “Leading by example and showing integrity,” he said. For Seth, the habits are a daily guide. He recalled a time when he noticed a classmate feeling left out at recess. “I invited him to play with me and my friend,” he explained. His favorite habit is “seek first to understand,” because he believes listening is just as important as being heard.

Students also see how leadership benefits them personally. “It makes me a better person and helps me be the best of my ability,” Seth added.

Teachers and staff play a big part by modeling leadership and encouraging students to practice it in real situations.

Fourth grader Blayke D. agreed. Her favorite habit is “put first things first.” She explained, “Sometimes I want to do my homework, but my brother has his friends over and I really want to play with them. So I stop what I’m doing and finish my homework.” For Blayke, this habit is about balance and making good choices.

Like Seth, Blayke has used leadership to support others. “One time my friend was left out and she didn’t know what to do. So I asked her if she wanted to come join us,” she said. She believes being an example and treating others with kindness is how students can show true leadership.

Blayke also shared how leadership has helped her grow. “By helping others, I can understand their problems. They might have the same problem as me, so they can also help me while I help them,” she said.

With the 7 Habits as their guide, KMBE students are gaining skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.

Mountain Trail Academy First Quarter Student Check-In Mountain Trail Academy has wrapped up its first quarter and is starting off the school year with lots of energy and excitement. Students, Teachers, and staff are creating a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the doors.

For many students, being part of a brand new school is both exciting and a little intimidating, but it quickly turns into something special. Sixth grader and student Treasurer Ridge F. shared, “You’d be kind of nervous to go to a new school at first, but everyone’s been so welcoming. Everything’s new and exciting, it’s just perfect.”

The students say that one of the best parts about Mountain Trail Academy is the teachers. Fifth grader Violet B. explained, “I really like that my teacher is very funny. He’s always making jokes in class.” Ridge agreed, adding that his teachers are “very cool” and that while they keep learning at the center, they also make class fun.

In addition to academics, Mountain Trail Academy focuses on building leadership and character. Ridge explained how the school uses the eight habits and a house system to encourage teamwork and friendly competition. “It helps me be a better person because we learn the eight habits. We also do houses, which is friendly competition with red, green, blue, and yellow houses. You earn points and get fun prizes at the end of the year,” he said.

Sixth grader Evi S. added that the supportive environment has made the transition smooth. “I like that my teachers are super nice. It’s a good experience for all of us,” she said. “The first day of school was fun because we got to meet a bunch of new people. I think this school helps us socialize, build character, and just learn.”

When asked what they would tell a new student about Mountain Trail Academy, the answers were all the same. It is a place where students feel welcome, supported, and encouraged. As Ridge put it simply, “Everything just keeps getting better.”

Kindergarten at Queen Creek Elementary

A place to learn and grow!

Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone for children and their families. At Queen Creek Elementary, the kindergarten program is designed to help students build confidence, develop a love of learning, and form meaningful friendships. Teachers create a balance of academic instruction and social growth, ensuring that every child feels supported as they begin their educational journey.

For Christina Schrieber, a dedicated kindergarten teacher at Queen Creek Elementary, the classroom is a place where students can flourish.

“I chose to teach Kindergarten because I love creating a positive, caring, and nurturing classroom environment where each child feels loved, confident, and successful,” she said. “I am excited for this school year because I enjoy meeting my new students and making learning fun and meaningful for them.”

In kindergarten, students are introduced to early literacy, math, science, and social studies in engaging ways that spark curiosity.

Just as importantly, they practice collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills that will support them in every stage of their education.

“The best part of Kindergarten is how each child grows academically and socially both inside and outside the classroom,” Schrieber explained. “I really enjoy seeing the children's excitement and joy, especially when they make and share their observations and connections with me and their classmates. I love being a Kindergarten teacher!”

Kindergarten at Queen Creek Elementary emphasizes both structure and creativity, blending hands-on learning with opportunities for play and discovery.

Students leave kindergarten not only prepared for first grade but also with confidence, independence, and a sense of community.

With teachers like Schrieber leading the way, families can feel confident that their children are in a safe and inspiring environment where they are encouraged to grow, explore, and thrive.

Father Fridays at Schnepf Elementary building community & connection At Schnepf Elementary, family and community involvement is a key part of student success. This year, the school launched a new initiative called Father Fridays, giving dads the chance to spend meaningful time with their children during the school day. The program has quickly become a highlight for both students and parents.

Aaron Beasley, who joined his son, said the experience was unforgettable. “I believe fatherhood is important. And so every chance I get to be there for my son, I'm going to be there,” Beasley shared. From playing recess games to meeting other students, he said the best part of the day was the look on his son’s face. “The joy on his face was just unmatched. For sure, he had the most fun.”

The initiative, born out of collaboration between school leaders and the community, reflects the belief that children thrive when families are engaged.

Beasley emphasized the importance of fathers stepping into that role. “You got a lot of statistics that show what happens if a father is not involved. It takes a community to raise a child.”

For Thomas McFeely, Father Friday was a chance to create a memory with his daughter. “I just wanted to surprise my daughter and be a good role model,” McFeely explained. His favorite part of the day was seeing her reaction when he arrived unexpectedly.

“She didn’t know I was coming. Seeing her smile was the best part.”

McFeely believes events like these send a powerful message to students. “If we show interest, then they'll be more interested as well. And it's important to show them that you're never too old to learn,” he said.

As Schnepf Elementary continues to grow its family engagement opportunities, Father Fridays highlight the value of building strong school-home connections. For parents like Beasley and McFeely, the initiative is a reminder that every moment spent at school makes a lasting difference.

Silver Valley Elementary Shines as a Lighthouse School Leadership development is at the center of Silver Valley Elementary. Since the school’s opening, Silver Valley has embraced the Leader in Me framework, a program designed to empower students to take ownership of their learning and develop essential life skills. This commitment recently earned Silver Valley the rare distinction of becoming a Lighthouse School, recognizing excellence in leadership development for both students and staff.

“When Silver Valley opened in 2019, we adopted the Leader in Me framework right away,” said Principal Kelli Frazier. “But as a brand new school, we had so many moving parts to figure out. In the beginning, Leader in Me was something we supported, but it had not become a part of who we were just yet.”

That began to change after staff visited an established Lighthouse School. “We realized Leader in Me could not just be what we did. It needed to become who we are,” said reading specialist Pia Murphy. Teachers, families, and students joined the Lighthouse Committee to make leadership a core part of school life.

“Leader in Me gave us the tools to turn things around,” said teacher Allyson McLaughlin. “We built a common language, established shared expectations, and created leadership roles for every student.” Dean of Students Josh Gissel added, “Major office referrals dropped by 79% in just one year. Students now take ownership of their actions and their learning.”

Students are thriving academically and personally. One student shared, “Our culture has changed in the best way. People are kinder. Everybody belongs. We celebrate success together, and that makes our school a place I’m proud to be.” Another explained, “Leader in Me helps me take charge of my learning. I set goals, track my progress, and my grades have gone up. I feel more confident and focused.”

“Leader in Me helped us build more than a school,” Frazier said. “We created a place where every student knows they can lead, every student knows they have genius, and everyone has the chance to thrive.”

Robo-bucs State Championship!

By: Natalie Nelson, NBCP journalism student Newell Barney College Preps “Robo-bucs” robotics team just became state champs in May, 2025, as four of our members led their team to victory.

Starting on February 29th, our Robo-bucs competed in the 2025 Arizona Interscholastic Association VEX V5 Robotics Competition at Desert Ridge High School, Mesa. Whether solving problems or building robots our robotics team has shown that they won with dedication and a growth mindset. They work two times a week, every Thursday and Tuesday.

“The sensation of knowing that we beat a team with greater and higher status is very worth it. We have worked hard and learned a lot, so winning states felt very rewarding,” said Rhoran A, a state winner.

John Poirier receives joy in teaching robotics to his young Robo-bucs. Poirier believes that robotics gives students different opportunities and experiences. Poirier has a passion for robotics and runs the Queen Creek Robotics Foundation.

Many club members are past Newell Barney College Prep students. Many Robo-bucs want to continue in future robotics clubs and programs after middle school. Some even consider joining Poirier's Queen Creek team.

“Robotics really helps me clear my cluttered mind, and make new friends. I also have learned how to be less competitive and to be alright with losing, as long as I’m happy,” said Claire S, a current Newell Barney College Prep robotics student.

People describe robotics clubs as a fun way to test your brain, do hands-on building, and think with a group of people. Robotics can also continue into your post-secondary education, it doesn’t have to be a one time club.

Our robotics team experienced being in a real-life robotics state competition.

Congratulations on bringing home first place!

“Robotics can lead to many different careers that have to do with Engineering, programming, coding, and journalism.”

Rhoran explained.

Winning at the state level qualified them to advance to the World Championship. They achieved an amazing top two percent global ranking at the VEX Robotics World Competition on May 6th, held in Dallas, Texas.

Robotics has helped many of our students think outside the box and make new connections.

Although they didn’t win first place, the Robobucs were challenged by their peers and used the opportunity to learn and persevere.

Bell to Bell: A Day as an NBCP Student By: NBCP Journalism Student Kayden Schneider This is a picture of some of our students on Spirit Week where they were participating in ‘twin day’. This shows how our campus’ community is constantly thriving.

At Newell Barney College Prep everyday you learn something new, whether it be academic or how to be a better person. NBCP follows an advanced curriculum with Leader in Me standards, these important contributions are shown through our students and our school community.

Everyday starts with students arriving at the school prepared to try their best. Before school starts you can see students playing volleyball in the courtyard, friends catching up on afterschool plans and the enjoyable community that we have at NBCP. No matter what class you have first we start our day off with student volunteers giving morning announcements about school events and sport updates. We then go into a Leader in Me Lesson which covers one of the eight habits and how we can apply them to ourselves and everyday life.

Our core classes include science, ELA, social studies, and 7th graders take pre-algebra while 8th graders take algebra 1. We rotate through nine periods and our teachers are all very kind and do their best to make us all successful and help us selfadvocate.

After our first four periods we then have lunch where students eat and have fun with their friends. During lunch you can look out in the courtyard and see a great community of inclusive people where 7th and 8th graders are bonding together.

Eighth grade Student Council member Lacey Weitekamp says “It's really nice to see how the 8th graders and 7th graders are so close and great friends!”

During lunch our teachers offer lunch and learn, you can go to retake a test or work on a missing assignment. This is another way our teachers are doing so much to help us.

Once lunch ends we then will go to achievement hour.

Achievement hour is a 30-minute period where we go over more simple review topics in ELA, science, social studies, and math.

Our school has Spanish as one of our electives, other electives are journalism, weights, PE, art, band, orchestra, and careers. NBCP also has STEM electives which include green architecture, robotics, app creators, medical detectives, and design and modeling.

To end a long day of learning, students ride the bus, walk, or are picked up by their parents to go home to relax and start on some homework.

No matter what kind of day you're having, good or bad at NBCP, you’ll always have a good friend to turn to, and a great school to be a part of!

QCJHS WEB Program Building Community through Leadership

At Queen Creek Junior High School, the WEB program, which stands for “Where Everyone Belongs,” is helping students grow as leaders and create a welcoming environment for incoming seventh graders.

Designed to support students as they transition into junior high, WEB pairs eighth-grade mentors with new students to guide them through orientation and their first year on campus.

Eighth grader Brylee F. explained how the program has shaped her leadership skills. “It definitely gave me more opportunities to showcase my leadership skills, and it’s also helped me grow my leadership,” she said. Brylee shared that orientation was a moment when she felt especially proud of the difference she made. “When I had to do orientation for the seventh graders, that made me proud,” she added. For her, kindness is the most important takeaway. “Definitely showing kindness around the school and even in my community, which is important for everyday life.”

Evelyn Gomez agreed that WEB has given her the chance to grow as a leader and get more involved at QCJHS. “I feel like it’s helped me become more involved with school activities and the students around,” she said.

Evelyn believes the program provides an important sense of belonging.“It helps them [7th graders] feel more welcome and like they have a good community surrounding them.

There’s students that are always there for them if they need anything.”

For mentor Makayla Portillo, the program has been about integrity and being a role model.

“It has made me a better role model for our school, and it’s taught me more kindness, respect, and integrity,” she shared. She felt most proud during events that connected students and the community.

“Any events that we do here, especially for out-of-school events, really helped me. I was proud of that.”

Through activities, mentorship, and consistent support, WEB helps new students adjust while giving mentors the chance to grow as leaders. As Brylee, Evelyn, and Makayla show, the program is more than just an introduction to junior high. It is a way to make sure every student knows that they truly belong.

Crismon High School Students Excel in Career and Technical Education Crismon High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs continue to thrive, giving students a competitive edge in the workforce while creating exciting opportunities for hands-on learning, leadership, and national recognition.

From business and healthcare to engineering, media, and stagecraft, Crismon students are proving that careerfocused education opens doors far beyond the classroom.

This past graduation, seniors earned TSA certificates and honors cords, while sophomores and juniors achieved TSA certificates, and stagecraft students earned OSHA certifications under the guidance of Mr. Thorn. These milestones ensure that students graduate with real-world credentials valued by employers.

CTE programs also give students the chance to attend competitions and leadership events. Members of DECA, the business leadership organization, competed at the state level, with Kamya M., Isabella M., and Danica M. finishing 7th in the finals. Students in HOSA, which focuses on future health professionals, attended a leadership camp in Williams, Arizona, and advanced to international competitions. Angel R., Bellamy B., Noa A., and Odelia K. represented Crismon in Tennessee this summer, while Allison P. and Ava M. earned top national rankings in Clinical Nursing.

SkillsUSA students also excelled, with video production teams competing at regionals and state. Daniel B. earned second place in Principles of Engineering, and film and TV students Issac E. and Dexter P. captured first place at state before heading to Atlanta for nationals.

Crismon’s FBLA chapter stood out as well, bringing home 35 medals at regionals and earning Platinum Chapter status at the state competition in Tucson. Students placed among the top nationwide, with Ryland J. and Isabella S. earning third in Intro to Event Planning and multiple other teams placing in the top five across categories such as Business Graphics, Event Planning, and Chapter Sign.

Through CTE, Crismon High School students are building skills for their future careers and gaining confidence, leadership experience, and lifelong memories. Whether competing on the national stage or earning certifications in the classroom, these students are setting themselves apart as future leaders in their fields.

Eastmark High School Students Thrive Through Exceptional Opportunities At Eastmark High School (EHS), students have access to an incredible range of opportunities that prepare them for success both inside and outside the classroom. From cutting-edge CTE courses to leadership-building activities, students are encouraged to explore their passions and develop into well-rounded individuals ready for the future.

One of the highlights of the past year was the Washington, D.C. trip, where students brought their history lessons to life while gaining new perspectives. Students walked the halls of the U.S. Capitol, visited monuments, and connected with peers from across the country. For many, it was a chance to grow academically and personally.

“My favorite part about the DC trip was meeting new people from around the world,” one student shared. Another reflected, “I liked the trip because I got to spend time not only with my school, but I also got to meet a bunch of new people and see the monuments up close. I think students should go because it's a close-up learning experience and gives a deeper learning experience for your history class.”

Others emphasized the value of the trip in broadening their perspectives. “There are a lot of other people and different perspectives across the nation that you get to speak with about political values and ideals that you otherwise wouldn't be able to get to,” a student explained. Another added, “My favorite part of the DC trip was the US Capitol tour. It was a lot of fun, and I feel like everyone should go on the DC trip because it’s educational and fun.”

Beyond trips like this, Eastmark High offers countless ways for students to get involved.

Competitive Esports, athletics, and clubs such as DECA give students the chance to build teamwork and leadership skills. Band, cheer, and pom programs provide creative outlets and school spirit, while Navy JROTC instills discipline, responsibility, and pride. Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, including marketing and HOSA, open doors to real-world experiences and career exploration.

At the heart of all these opportunities is Eastmark’s dedicated staff, who guide and support students every step of the way. Together, these experiences ensure that EHS students are not only prepared for college and careers but are also building lasting memories and skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Queen Creek High School JROTC takes the field Under the bright lights of Chase Field, Queen Creek High School’s JROTC cadets stood tall, presenting the nation’s colors before thousands of cheering fans. For the students in uniform at a Diamondbacks game, it was a mark of pride, discipline, and the leadership skills they had been working hard to develop.

“It is a big honor,” said senior Anthony C., who serves as the executive officer of the battalion. “Experiencing something like that is pretty euphoric because you are out there representing your community. It’s a great feeling.”

The cadets spent the evening preparing behind the scenes, from suiting up in their uniforms to rehearsing their movements before stepping onto the field. After the presentation, they were able to enjoy the game together, complete with tickets provided by the team. For senior Haylie J., the experience was both nerve-wracking and unforgettable. “I really felt nervous. But it was such an amazing feeling, something once in a lifetime. We were so proud to be able to show people who we are and represent Queen Creek.”

The JROTC program at Queen Creek High School is cadetled and modeled after the military, but it is not a pathway that requires enlistment.

Instead, it is about building confidence, leadership, and discipline. “The biggest thing is time management and communication,” Anthony explained.

Beyond special events like the Diamondbacks game, cadets dedicate themselves to community service. They have landscaped a home for a disabled veteran, delivered candy and joy to senior living residents, and volunteered at food banks. Each student averages more than 30 hours of service a year.

Haylie agreed, crediting the program with helping her set higher goals for herself.

“JROTC has really taught me to set higher standards and stay on track. I want to go to college for nursing, and this program has prepared me step by step to get there.”

The program, made possible thanks to voters passing the 2024 Override Renewal, continues to give students unique opportunities to grow as leaders while strengthening ties between Queen Creek High School and the community. As Jackson put it, “JROTC shows us who we can be. It gives us leadership skills, discipline, and the chance to serve. It really is a good experience for every cadet.”

What Is QCVA? Queen Creek Virtual Academy is the online school option in the Queen Creek Unified School District in Arizona. It serves students by giving them the flexibility to learn from home while following the district’s calendar.

At Queen Creek Virtual Academy, curriculum delivery is tailored to different grade levels using online learning platforms. Elementary students in grades K–6 learn through SchoolsPLP, while students in grades 7–12 use Imagine Edgenuity. Across all grade levels, QCVA provides access to core academic subjects as well as a wide range of electives, honors courses, and Advanced Placement options, all aligned with state standards. To ensure student success, facilitators offer support through small group instruction, one-on-one virtual meetings, tutoring, and live sessions via Google Meet, giving learners both flexibility and personalized guidance.

Students enrolled in Queen Creek Virtual Academy are expected to dedicate about 25 hours per week to their studies, which includes both online coursework and offline assignments. To remain active in their courses, students must log their weekly work time—such as completing assignments, studying, or attending tutoring—through ParentVUE. Failure to record this information may result in deactivation of their courses. In addition, students who show no activity for ten consecutive days risk being withdrawn from the program.

One of the key strengths of Queen Creek Virtual Academy is the flexibility it offers, allowing students to complete coursework at times that fit their individual needs and family schedules. This structure is especially beneficial for students with non-traditional routines or those who thrive outside the standard school day.

QCVA also provides a wide range of course offerings, including electives, honors, and Advanced Placement classes, which might not always be available at every brick-and-mortar campus.

Additionally, the school has a strong graduation rate, reflecting its ability to support students in successfully completing their academic journey.

Queen Creek Virtual Academy can be an excellent choice for students who need greater flexibility in their schedules due to travel, health, work, or other commitments. It is well-suited for independent learners who manage their time effectively and for those seeking access to courses not offered at nearby schools or who prefer an alternative to the traditional classroom setting.

However, QCVA may be less ideal for students who thrive on daily in-person social interaction, rely on consistent face-to-face supervision, or require extensive special support services and hands-on accommodations.

TIM WARNOCK,GPA

Gateway Polytechnic Academy is home to many outstanding educators, and one of them is Physical Education teacher Tim Warnock. With more than 14 years of teaching experience, Tim brings passion, resilience, and community spirit to his work every day.

“I had been teaching at a charter school in Queen Creek and just fell in love with this town,” Warnock shared. “After meeting Carl Holgorsen, Tom Lindsay, and other members of our school community, I knew this was the place for me. I really wanted to be part of this team and help it grow over the years.”

In his classes, Warnock focuses on much more than physical skills. “I want my students to have a joy for activity and an understanding that physical activity strengthens their resilience and resolve,” he explained. “I want them to stay engaged in life and carry that engagement throughout their lifetime.”

Warnock’s work extends beyond the classroom. He leads professional development and public speaking engagements centered on trauma and resilience, a mission inspired by his personal journey after his son’s passing. “It has been a learning curve for me, moving from post-traumatic stress to post-traumatic growth,” he said. “I talk about how physical activity, diet, hygiene, and sleep prepare us to handle high-stress situations and build a strong foundation for resilience.”

Reflecting on student success, Warnock takes pride in both athletes and everyday moments. “Some standouts would be the Purdy family, including Brock and Chub, who are just amazing people,” he said.

“I also had a student who worked his way up to become an all-state cross-country runner, which was incredible. But sometimes success is simply hearing a little girl on a hike say, ‘This is the most fun thing I’ve ever done.’ Those moments of joy and engagement are what matter.”

What he appreciates most about Gateway Polytechnic Academy is the community itself. “The students, staff, and families here have such core values of kindness, respect, and integrity,” Warnock said. “Even when challenges come up, the depth of those morals makes this a special place.”

Nourishing Students Through Local Partnerships and ScratchMade Meals

Our Child Nutrition program is proud to highlight vol. 1 the strong partnerships we have built with local producers to bring fresh, high-quality, and nutritious foods to our students. By sourcing locally, we not only support Arizona farmers and producers, but we also ensure that students are enjoying wholesome meals made with care.

From Oatman’s Farm, we purchase regenerative organic items such as bagels, pretzels, and flour. The bagels and pretzels are featured in our regular cycle menu, while the flour is used in our kitchens to bake house-made muffins served as part of our breakfast program. We also work closely with SunProduce to bring in crisp, locally grown lettuce and cucumbers, along with natural Arizona honey—all of which enrich our menus and provide students with fresher, healthier choices.

Our breakfast program continues to grow as we add more nutritious options that students love. This year, we introduced four new scratch-made breakfasts: Fluffy egg bites A hearty egg bake Warm and comforting French toast casserole Student-favorite breakfast pizza These additions reflect our commitment to offering balanced, delicious meals that help students start their day with energy and focus.

We encourage families to take advantage of our breakfast program and have their children join us in the cafeteria each morning. A healthy breakfast at school sets the tone for a successful day of learning!

Community Education: Opportunities for Students and Families Across QCUSD Queen Creek Unified School District’s Community Education Department provides valuable programs and services designed to support students, families, and the greater community. From child care to enrichment opportunities, these programs ensure that learning, growth, and connection extend well beyond the school day.

Discovery Kids Child Care The Discovery Kids program offers beforeand after-school child care for students in grades K–6 at all 10 elementary schools.

Currently, 924 students are enrolled in the program, which also provides child care during QCUSD breaks, including summer, fall, winter, and spring. This flexible, reliable option gives families peace of mind while students engage in safe, fun, and meaningful activities.

Preschool Programs Tuition-based preschool is available at Gateway Polytechnic Academy, Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, Queen Creek Elementary, Silver Valley Elementary, Mountain Trail Academy, and Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary. With 571 children enrolled, these classes are taught by certified teachers and offer both half-day and fullday options. Openings are still available at select sites, giving more families the chance to provide their young learners with a strong start.

Youth Athletic Programs (YAP) The Youth Athletic Program is available at all 15 schools across the district. Led by QCUSD coaches, YAP provides a wide variety of camps and clinics throughout the school year, encouraging students to stay active, build skills, and enjoy the spirit of teamwork.

Afterschool Enrichment Opportunities Students also have the chance to participate in unique afterschool enrichment programs throughout the district. Offerings range from art and drawing to 3D printing, chess, and STEM-based activities. These programs allow students to explore new interests and strengthen creativity outside the classroom.

Facility Rentals Beyond student programs, Community Education also provides facility rentals yearround. Schools across the district are available to host events, meetings, and activities, creating meaningful partnerships and offering community members a place to gather and connect.

Investing in Students, Staff, and Community QCUSD Business Services Department Update The Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD) Business Services Department plays a vital role in ensuring students and staff have the resources they need to succeed. Responsible for managing budgets, payroll, purchasing, and capital planning, the department works behind the scenes to keep classrooms supported, campuses safe, and the district on track for sustainable growth.

M&O Override Renewal Thanks to voter support, the 15% Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Override has been renewed, securing approximately $15.5 million for the 2025– 2026 school year. These funds sustain critical programs such as K–3 instructional assistants, math and reading interventionists, and secondary math lab teachers. They also provide ongoing professional development, preserve fine arts and music programs, and help maintain smaller class sizes. Importantly, the override supports competitive salaries to attract and retain staff and will launch a new Naval JROTC program at Eastmark High School. Fully funded for five years, this override ensures stability for programs that directly benefit students.

Safer Schools, Stronger Communities The Business Services Department also manages Adjacent Ways funding, which improves infrastructure around schools. Recent projects include new fire and bus lanes at Mountain Trail Academy, a satellite bus yard at Queen Creek Junior High, and roadway improvements near Eastmark High School. These upgrades enhance safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen connections between schools and neighborhoods.

Looking Ahead Through responsible financial planning and strong community support, QCUSD Business Services ensures that resources are invested wisely to support excellent teaching, safe campuses, and a bright future for all students.

Adopting a Responsible Budget On July 8, 2025, the Governing Board adopted QCUSD’s expenditure budget for FY 2025–2026. The budget prioritizes student success, safe campuses, exceptional personnel, and operational efficiency, while reducing the overall tax rate. Public hearings accompany all budget actions, underscoring QCUSD’s commitment to transparency.

National Recognition QCUSD’s dedication to financial excellence continues to earn recognition nationwide. For fiscal year 2024, the district received two prestigious awards: the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and the Certificate of Excellence from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBOI). QCUSD Launches Math Initiatives to Boost Student Achievement The Queen Creek Unified School District is launching a comprehensive plan to transform mathematics instruction from kindergarten through 12th grade. The initiative focuses on deepening students' understanding and building essential skills to improve performance on state and national assessments.

At the elementary level, the district is adopting the EMPOWER Math series. This program focuses on research-based strategies, such as number talks, which are collaborative discussions where students share and justify their problem-solving methods. This approach moves beyond simple memorization, helping students understand why math works.

Teachers will also use fluency games and anchor charts to make learning more engaging.

To further support its educators, QCUSD is collaborating with the Arizona Mathematics Partnership (AMP). A cohort of 16 teachers, primarily from middle schools, will participate in this intensive program. The focus is on deepening their mathematical content knowledge and aligning their classroom instruction to national standards. The goal is to prepare students for advanced high school math, with an emphasis on building teacher leaders who can sustain these practices longterm.

For middle and high school students, the district is implementing the enVision Math program. This curriculum is designed to help students tackle complex topics by focusing on critical thinking and communication. Educators will be trained to facilitate student discourse, encouraging students to discuss and articulate their mathematical reasoning. The program also integrates digital tools, allowing students to visualize concepts and explore mathematical relationships dynamically.

We introduced MyRide K12 at the start of the school year. This is our new student transportation app designed to keep you informed and connected to your child’s school bus schedule in real time.

With MyRide K12, you’ll have access to your child’s bus routing information directly from your smartphone or device. Most importantly, this app is how we will communicate any route delays, schedule changes, or important updates regarding your child’s transportation. This means no more guessing if the bus is late or changes have been made—you’ll receive realtime notifications.
