Honorary Secretary's Statement

Come back stronger

Pursuant to Article 53(b) of the Constitution, I submit this Annual Report 2022-23 (as of September 2, 2023) for your consideration at the (96th) Annual General Meeting 2023 to be held on September 16.

As the tenth Annual Report since the conversion from plain text to visuals in 2013-14, this is the best timing to consolidate the many exciting moments in the past year at the close of QC 160th anniversary (QC160) celebrations in a re-organised presentation, highlighting the achievements we made together and directions for the future.

We come back stronger. With the long-awaited lifting of anti-epidemic rules, our team quickly kick-started and beefed up year-long preparations for the Gala Dinner to less than five months. We hope we have not let you down. From your happy faces to the strong fraternity rebuilt at this first mega reunion since end-2018, all of the team's hard work coupled with additional dressing to recall the fond QC memories we may once have forgotten during COVID-19 bore fruit. It is always heartening to see everyone in good health despite challenges.

Thanks to the support from and teamwork of Members, Old Boys and stakeholders, we have emerged from the very difficult years. With step-by-step attempts and alternative plans tried out extensively and collectively,

they became part of the solid foundation upon which the success and progress of the comeback can be built. When we preserve and persevere, things can still be better amid changing circumstances.

To me, the other special boost of confidence was the QC160 Singing Contest Final in December 2022 coorganised by SC and QCOBA, where an artiste first adjudicated and sang. At the beginning of the path to normalcy, we were particularly impressed to see boys and Old Boys in overjoy, relaxation and interaction, which were close to absence in their high school years. We have a lot more to do to support juniors in resuming their energy for further milestones to extend the QC legacy of which we are proud.

When we say goodbye to few and hello to some, let's not forget that we come together to commit to something bigger than ourselves.

About 1 200 Old Boys, students, parents as well as past and present teachers honoured the alma mater and reinforced the duty to serve, brotherhood and friendship at the close of QC160 at the Gala Dinner on May 20, 2023, following the announcement of a new education foundation to be established to deliver QCOBA's education mission.

The officiating party was an extraordinary reunion, comprising the former and current Principals, Mr LEE Kar-hung, Mr LI Lok-yin, Ms LI Sui-wah and Ms Yvetta Ruth LEUNG; the Honorary President of QCOBA, Mr Ronnie YU Chun-hong; the Honorary Advisers, Mr Stanley AU Kai-kwong, Dr LAM Kin-chung, Mr WONG Yan-lung, SC, Mr Peter LAI Hing-ling, Mr Eric CHEUNG

Tat-ming, Mr CHOI Chee-cheong, Mr YEUNG Tak-keung, Dr York CHOW Yat-ngok, Dr HO Koon-wan, Mr LO Tingfai, Mr Alvin KWOCK Yin-lun, Mr KWOK Kwok-chuen and Mr Michael CHAN Kee-huen; the Honorary Auditor, Mr TAM King-tong; Members of the Executive Committee; the Principal of QCOBA Secondary School, Mr HUI Kinyip; the Chairman of the QCPTA, Mr William LAM Wailam; and the President of the SC, Matthew LAW Tin-yau. The Honorary President, Prof Joseph SUNG Jao-yiu, and the Honorary Adviser, Mr KONG Shiu-chung, sent in written messages. In a solemn School Stand in the Grand Ballroom of Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong, the full house of 84 tables sang a resounding School Song in the first whole-school mega reunion dinner since end-2018. In her opening address, Ms Ruth LEUNG highlighted the thoughtful presentation of the reunion. "The comfortable setting, the meaningful illustration, the flame tree in the backdrop, the logo resembling our cotton tree and record-breaking sponsors are QCOBA's efforts and the soft power of QC boys. I understand how precious reunion tonight is. Old Boys returning from overseas show the sturdy brotherhood and priceless reunion, particularly on this special day of May 20 (homophonic to 'I love you' in Putonghua)," she said.

Ms LEUNG expressed her gratitude to Advisers, Old Boys and parents, who walked the talk to the theme of QC160 "serving the community". In addition, she saluted former Principals, teachers and a dozen of retired leaders of government secondary schools who served or observed QC as alumni or parents closely in the past. "QC160 is so special that it runs for more than two years, during which we ride out difficulties, co-operate and learn from each other, coupled with a more in-depth experience of 'serving the community'. Let's continue to equip ourselves for the pursuit of excellence under the school motto 'Labor Omnia Vincit' to better serve the community in future," she added. She also presented souvenirs to Advisers who missed the Thank You Ceremony in

November 2022."

In his welcoming remarks, the Convenor for Gala Dinner, Mr Kevin CHU Kai-ming, said, "We meet again, after torture, sadness and frustration in the past 4.5 years or so. Although some of us departed, the online live tonight engages brothers asunder in the School Song and Three Cheers from afar." He said that "serving the community", the QC story Hong Kong should tell, has been a strong consensus with the school from the epidemic to normalcy. Serving QC for over a century, QCOBA will continue to tell QC stories aptly, preserve memories and channel them into energy for generations of QC boys. "From distancing to reunion, isolation to neighbouring, disappointment to hopes, the Gala Dinner showcases passion, sincerity

and unity, which are what anniversaries are all about," he added.

To follow predecessors' footsteps to give back to the QC community and deliver "our centenary duty" of "serving QC family", QCOBA announced that a new education foundation would be established to collate resources for students and nurture talent for QC. Mr Julian LAW outlined the tentative proposal, including a fund-raising exercise by calligraphy works of Dr CHUI Pui-chee (1997).

The evening converged glorious sounds from the String Orchestra, the QCPTA, a pair of teacher and student representatives, the A Cappella Team and the Champion of the QC160 Singing Contest. QCPTA also dedicated a

photo collage comprising families who participated in the QC160 Walkathon in August and September 2022 to the school. Past and present Principals and teachers joined in a remarkable group photo. The live band Monkey & Friends included an Old Boy Mr CHAN Tsun (2012). Old Boys were most excited by the beer game.

The Gala Dinner would not be successful without the generosity of sponsors, including Diamond Sponsors from Mr Stanley AU, Mr Ronnie YU, the Lam Kin Chung Morning Sun Charity Fund and Kai Shing Management Services Ltd; and Platinum Sponsors from Lighthouse Technologies Ltd, Takbo Group Holdings Limited, Jervois One (Hong Kong) Ltd and Chi Wing Construction Co Ltd. Cash prizes in the lucky draw were contributed by Ms Ruth LEUNG and the Assistant Principals, Mr WONG Kwok-keung, Mr YU Wai-keung and Mr CHENG Him, as

well as the former Assistant Principal, Mrs CHAN O Suifong.

The QC160 Student Crew, the SC, the QCOBA Student Assistants, the Photography and Multimedia Production Club and the Editorial Board of The Yellow Dragon served at the event.

QC160 Tourbillon by QCOBA and Memorigin

Prior to the Gala Dinner, as part of QCOBA's precious souvenirs, both the navy blue and burgundy red alligator straps of the QC160 Tourbillon launched on May 2, 2023 recalled the intimacy of the alma mater by their colours. It carried QC characteristics among delicate parts, including the QC Emblem and signature pattern modelling brick walls of the Scout Den (a Grade 2 historic building).

On top of collaboration with Memorigin further to previous anniversaries, the QC160 Tourbillon provided a special and personalised engraving service to the back of the movement to become a highly collectible limited edition for QC boys.

QC160 Whisky "Brothers in Thunder"

After a preview at the Gala Dinner, the QC160 whisky "Brothers in Thunder" was launched on August 18, 2023 as the finale of the anniversary souvenirs and second to the QCOBA Centenary whisky "The Yellow Dragon" launched in January 2021.

The 1996 25-year-old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Ben Nevis, one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, was selected for the strong and intense character, together with a fruity and tropical spicy aroma. It concluded QC160 by both a sweet aftertaste and the taste of reunion and encouraged QC boys to live up to the call resounding in the final chorus of the School Song "Sons of Cathay, raise your voices in thunder".

QC160 Thank You Ceremony and Dinner

QCOBA joined campus stakeholders to express gratitude to Honorary Advisers for their valuable service to the alma mater at the QC160 Thank You Ceremony on November 23, 2022.

While the QC160 Launching Ceremony in January and the Birthday Celebration in May 2022 were cancelled due to the emerging fifth wave of COVID-19 and class suspension amid rainstorm respectively, the Thank You Ceremony aimed to converge students, alumni, parents and teachers to meet with and honour the QC160 Honorary Advisers for their continued service to the alma mater in the special year. In her welcoming remarks, the Principal, Ms Ruth LEUNG, said that QC had nurtured tremendous outstanding leaders in the past, contributing to the community, country and places around the world in various sectors.

Ms LEUNG said, "We maintained the QC tradition to appoint all QCOBA Honorary Advisers as Honorary Advisers of the QC160 Organising Committee in recognition of your staunch support and contributions to the alma mater as role models of QC boys. Of note, in the three-year-long epidemic, many QC brothers have been serving the community in different professions with strong commitment, pursuit of excellence and willingness

to serve in an all-out effort in the face of challenges. They live out the spirit of our school motto 'Labor Omnia Vincit' and echo the theme of QC160 'serving the community'."

Delivering his opening remarks, the President of QCOBA, Mr James WONG Pong-chun, said that it has been an honour to shoulder the responsibility of serving Old Boys despite the epidemic. The epidemic was our physical examination which showed our weaknesses and areas for improvement. QCOBA has to map out our role subsequent to social issues, global pandemic as well as early exit and migration trends. "We must better serve alumni with new tools and strategies and unite the alumni family for the development of the alma mater. We should tell QC stories well and aptly in the six years QC boys only have once

to let them know the QC magic, thereby extending the legacy by their glorious sound. We will continue to stay on duty and take the solemn vow of serving the QC family as our Centenary duty."

At the ceremony, a souvenir boxset was presented to each Honorary Adviser by stakeholders. It comprised past and present school badges and a small wooden block with " 皇者仁風 " characters duplicated from the calligraphy of Prof JAO Tsung-i. The wood was part of a seven-decadeold candlenut tree by the campus entrance removed in November 2019 for risk of collapse. The boxset was a symbol for both conservation efforts and the education mission of QC.

Honorary Advisers gave appreciation messages and discussed how to maintain our competitiveness in the talent fight among schools. Mr Peter LAI reckoned that QC's history is closely linked to the history of Hong Kong's education and he appealed to alumni to contribute resources and knowledge to the alma mater.

Mr WONG Yan-lung, SC, said that, as "iron sharpens iron", the QC fraternity should continue to develop our traditional advantages and keep up with excellence. His Honour Judge Clement LEE was blessed by the brotherly professional network QCOBA established and the mentorship benefitted both mentors and mentees as part of serving the community. Mr Eric CHEUNG urged us to protect the liberal campus for students to unleash their potential.

Dr HO Koon-wan shared with the QC family numerous stories of famous alumni making significant contributions to the country. Mr KWOK Kwok-chuen concurred with the theme "serving the community" of QC160, which became key to students' development nowadays. Dr LAM Kinchung said that the QC spirit is indeed "to serve, not to be served" and he hoped that QC remains the happy soil for students to dream with a global vision and where dreams come true.

Mr Julian LAW pledged to converge Old Boys to play a more proactive role in the future development of the alma mater. Dr CHENG Chi-man and Mr TAM King-tong felt the warmth when they teamed up with alumni and played badminton and plastic football in the annual Games Days respectively. Mr Michael CHAN appreciated the very meaningful and precious wooden block in the souvenir boxset. Mr CHOI Chee-cheong was happy to be back to campus every time while Mr Ronnie YU paid tribute to the alma mater and stakeholders.

In addition, the President of the SC, Matthew LAW, delivered vote of thanks and was "grateful" for the reflections, learning opportunities behind crisis management and substantial personal growth under the epidemic. Before the ceremony concluded, the Male

Voice Choir led the QC family in singing the full verse of School Song. As a QC160 initiative, students appreciated the verses unsung publicly in contemporary history, taking a closer look at QC's history and social status in the early ages. Prior to the ceremony, Ms Ruth LEUNG presented souvenirs to the QC160 Student Crew in 2021/22 and 2022/23 in recognition of their hard work in the anniversary year.

The Honorary Body of QCOBA has been appointed as Honorary Advisers of the QC160 Organising Committee in recognition of their service to the alma mater. Representatives of the school, QCOBA, the SC, the QCPTA and fellow partners attended the ceremony, which was broadcast live online.

Role to Play

QCOBA has been working closely with students in the past year and had numerous collaboration projects with SC to maintain the QC experience students only have once, thereby consolidating brotherhood and the fine tradition of serving the alma mater. Throughout the school year, alumni concerns on topical issues, such as early exit rates and new uniform tests, were suitably conveyed to and discussed with the school.

As in the past, graduates were invited for membership registration at a half-fee discount of Life Member subscription within one year upon graduation. Eleven Student Assistants served in 2022-23 and provided necessary support to QCOBA in event management.

YEAR

After years of very difficult operations, QCOBA's projects, activities and collaboration with campus and community stakeholders have largely resumed normal with the joint efforts of Members and the ExCom.

Despite QCOBA Centenary and QC160 celebrations disrupted by COVID-19, Members and stakeholders supported and appreciated the alternatives and attempts in general. Evaluation on and feedback to QC160 at large and individual items have been relayed at QC160 Organising Committee and on relevant occasions over the past 1.5 years. To conclude, effective command structure, supervision and coordination are key to success of anniversary events involving crossstakeholder collaboration.

There were suggestions highlighting the three major areas of the Centenary of the HKU, namely knowledge,

heritage and service, as a good reference tool for school anniversaries in the education community. QC160 promoted public service the best and partly on heritage through school history items. We should step up the arm on building knowledge and strengthening learning in future, eg gifted, STEAM and entrepreneurship education.

Despite QC165 very possibly to be taken up by an entirely new management team and also possibly by new faces among stakeholders, experience of QC160 should be thoroughly consolidated, duly recorded and passed along accordingly. QCOBA should also move on to other outstanding issues affecting boys and Old Boys on the path of normalcy.
