It would indeed, be almost impossible to enclose within the covers of this year's is ue of our magazine a tn1ly comprehensive account of the happenings of the past year, but in looking back there ar three impgrtant factors which stand out as ·h aving influenced greatly our progress during the course of this "Coronation year''.

First and foremost, great attention was naid during the year to the prenaration for, anil to the celebration of that all too rare event-the Coronation. this time formilllv usherinP" in a new ElizahPthan era: then turning- to internal and domestic affairs, having- hid farewPll to onr old principal Capt. H. Nobbs, we welcomed his successor, Mr. V ..J. Sanger-Davies, and what was of equal thouR"h not imm diate significance to us, we witnessed the completion of another forward tep in the develo'])ment of our country.

It was into such an atmosphere of nnticipntion nnd prenaration that we welcomert ou1· new princi))al Mr. Sanger-Davies, who coming to us after several years in Africa. brou1rht with him a wealth of expe1·ience and inifectious enthusiasm which coupled with new ideas and a new outlook soon made their mark on the school. 'J)articulal'ly on its c11ltural side.

The true si,gnificance also, of what ha. 1been termed a major step in the progress of our country towards self-government, the ultimate goal of all Colonial territories wh ich was made during the yeaT cannot escaipe u , for it ca t upon nll such schools as our throughout the colony a role of much greater consequence, importance and trust in the educating of Guiana's youth.

In the face of all these circumstances then, when growing responsi.b ility and the hand of change are falling .heavi ly both on and around us, the apoeal, made by ou.r pdncipa l in his Chr istmas message to the school, asking that each boy contribute something to the school, and especially l1i s ''love, loyalty and devotion," i 11ot and cannot b too exacting a ctemf\nd.

The· Year in:.Retrospect We have now completed our second year in the magnificent new building.

It has been a remarkable year, one that has seen a rapid succession of importan t events.

What has perhaps been the most notable an.cl significant event was the arrival at the turn of the old year of the n ew principal, ~r. V. J. Sanger-Davies.

Hi coming marked t he dawn of a new era in the history of the chool. Already his energy and enthusiasm has won him great populai·ity with the boys and a nam e among t he citizens of the colony. Th concerts, opera and plays offered by the school, have ·been in the main, the prod uct of his ideas for widen in g the field of activities of the collegi>. The re c.an be no doubt that the school is making rapicl strides under his leaclersh i11.

Of cultu ral activities, the past year has indeed ·been full . Two concerts wen· given for the pnrp::.se of aoquiring funds for stage equipment. Both have been ont~tanding successes. Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" was played with a caste of fifth-fol'mers and we are hampy to no te t hat both performances were enjoyed by a packed house. Other pel'formances, "The Princess of Naples," the Coronation Pagen,nt, and Concerts, in which our boys took part, did not foil to draw capacity erowds.

Turning to ,games, once more we may be justly proud of the performances of our old boys. In Trinidad Bruce Pairaudeau achieved the enviable distinction of makin g a century against the touring Indians on his first appearance in Test cricket. Then Arnold Gibbons was chosen to represent the colony against th e to uri sts and convincingly justified his se lection as batsman and wicket-keeper at Bourdn. For t he rest, we won, as has become our custom, the ,Jacob Cup for cricket, by defeating the Berbice High School, but lost, to the consternation of our .,,upporters, the semi-final of the Dias Cup. The Reed Cup for ,J unior football, also lipped from our hands for the first time in three years.

To S. .M. N. Jaikaran, the ,vinner of the 1953 Guiana Schobrship, we e,d:~ nd our hea1-ty congratulations. Runner u·p S. M. D. Insanally was later consoled with the award of a scholarship at the U.C.W.I. He will 1begin his term there in company with another class-mate, H. V. Chan . The Percival Exhibition wen t this year to C. Mek<leci.

In the inter-house competiti on in AthJ,etics Weston Hou se asserted their superiority by winning t he House Championship Shield for t he second year in succession. Percival House, however had the Senior ,Champion in G. H. Wong The Pilgrims surprisingly ,w ere fooi.iba ll as well as aquatic champions. Austin House saved her nam e and retained the Cricket Shield.

The College took part in. the Coronation Games in whic,h the secondary schools in Georgetown competed in foo tball, cricket, table-tenn is and volley.Jball.

The oppo in,g teams proved no match for us for we emerg-ed victors in ever¥ department t herebr securing the Coronation .Cu~.

Our scouts continue to step forward. Two more m embers of our group, M. Osborn e and J. Lee have been created Queen's Scouts. The Cuib$. also have brought fu rther cr edit to themselves while tl1e Carlet Corps continues t-o maintain its traditionally high le\·cl of efficiency. We conj:l'ratulate R. L. Clarke, a former :ergeant of the cor ps on his commendable shooting with the Georgetown Rifle CJLrb. The pr oblem of staff-shortage i impl'oving. Though Messrs. K. A. S. Brown, . P. Y hap, M. T. Lowe>, and IJ. R. Pe1·saud are• still away and Mr. A. G. Lar t he has j ust gone on leave, we have secured the services of a number of new maste1·s. The Rev. J ames L. Good des igns were produced but tho ·e of J . E. Hokier and A. Spence were thought to be superior. Finally Holder's design was given the edge over Spence's.

With the ending of the last school year, came the loss of many of our stalwarts. Th greatest loss, was that of our last House captain, S. Jaikar an.

Of equal magnitude, lbut in a different way, was the los of Mr. Rod vny, who left us to return to the Education Depa1tment. Felt also, was th loss of ou~· athl tes Taitt, S'pence and othe1·s. . The year was one of fair success in all fiel ls for our House. The first term of course, was almost completely devoted to cricket and House Feeds. Of the first, much cannot be aid. We fought valiantly, but were unfortunately not to have·as good players as the other Houses. We .however showed them how to fight. The H u e Feed was a gala affair. The spring term, was one of great activity. Twelfth Jjght, Sports, Concerts and t he like, so1·ely hindered the running of the House as regards the register marking. Th members of the Hou e played their part in all of these. ln ath let ics, !.'h anks to G. H . Wong, we were fourth. He mu t ,be congratulated on hl s spl ndid performance. As la t year. the under 15 a nd under 17, were very weak, but this I thilllk ean be remedied by more determina ion on the part of the boys concerned.

A far as ports are concerned this term wa our be t. We finalised in the House 1 ootball competi_tion, but lost t he final to Austin House in a hard fought game. There are man~· activiti s this term and a usual t h e examination a r e affec ing the school as a whole.

Already their deep interest in our activities is beginnin.g to bea1· fruit and we all expect that it will continue to do so for many yea1·s to ccime.

Ou r best wishes fo llow Mr. H. R. Per aud, an assi tant master of the hou e, who is now furthering his studies in the United K ingdom.

Once again we are at t.he end of another school yea1· and we have made no outstand ing contri1bution to the traditions of Raleigh House. One succe s may per·hap be claimed namely, that of the House Social which came off with such a bang that our Principal soon hurried in to take part in th!d p r oceedi ngs, and di hes. There can be little doubt that the ame le el of enjoyment i expected t-hi coming year.

In the field of sport, we have ended as u ual at the foot of the list, but there are, w ithout a dou,bt, some ii:tns of encouragement. In swimming, particularly, some impre sive performances have been given iby the Ridleys and Gray and indeed, it is not hard to see in them future champions. But in s,wimming, as also in the other comipeti.tions in the school, football, cricket, athletics, our aim s hould be to put the House at tne top, and here, it is the team that triump,bs, not the ind ividual competitor or player.

In all ou r endeavours, in the classroom as well as on the playing-field, we have most ardent supporters in our House Masters. To them we are deeply indebted. Let us ma n if est our gratitude in a determined effort to attain succcess, let us once win throug-h, then we shall be satisfie<l with being nothing l.>1.1 t the best. ·

Though somewhat belatedly, I would like on behalf of t he House to wish Mr. J. N. Chung a happy vacat ion in the U.S.A ., and to welcome once- aga in to ou1· mid ·t, Ml'. Archel'.

On ce again we can boast of a fai rl y successful year in the Inter-House co mpeti t ions. In the la t term of the 1952 school year, we emerged champions of football, coring 19 points out of a po sible 20. The one point was lost as a result of a draw with Weston House (runners up) 2nd XI.

In the fir t tel'm of the new school year om· cricket teams led in their section, the first eleven scoring two pa rticularl y easy wins. We then went on to defeat, for the second consecutive yeai·, D'U 1,ba11 Ho·use in the f.in al, by 14 runs. Robert cored an aggl'es ive 72 in the final, while Le ila return d some good figures in bowling.

Although this year t hel'e wa an increase in the number of competitor w!lo entered fo r the Athletic Sports, we had to be contented again with second place to We ton Hou e. Special mention must be made of Matthews who convincingly beat the other compelitor in the 100 ya rd and 220 yards under 13, smaR-hing both records . an d emergin g unde r 13 ch~Lmpion. We mu st also mention Hanoman who broke PaiJ"audeau ' s longstandin g ricket Ball reco1:d with a p henomenal t hrow of 72 yards, and Burnett who was runn er up to the Senior Cha mpi onship. At cricket we were more s uccessful being winners of our section an d close runner. -up in the final which we lost by the narrow margin of 14 runs to Austin House.

As usual, and I say this with pride we were outsta,nding in the scholastic field. Our heartiest congratulations mus t ,.o to S. M. D. Insanally' and H . V. han. The former was runner in the 1952 B.G. Scholar hip and has also won an open cholarship in arts to the U.C.W.l. The latter was placed fourth in the B.G. Scholar hip and won an open scholarshin in science. Both of these boys will be leaving the colony in October. On behalf of the house I wish them every success.

To conclude I think that it is fitting to quot,e the tWOl'ds so often echoed J:>y our late princi'J)al: "You come to chool not merely to get certificates or to attain prowess in games, but far more to prepare yourself to take a worthy place in the communi y." So let us not be despondent about our various performances, but let us strive to be worthy members of D'Urban House, the school and our country.

The H ouse here takes t his opportunity of expressing an en bh usiastic welcome to Mr. N. E. Cameron, who r,eturned from leave towards the end of the ,S ipring Term, and has once mor e taken up his position as leader of the Hou e. A hearty welcome is also extended to Mr. N. S. C. Cameron who has recently joined us as au assistant House Master.

In the field of sport, we had, though, not an entirely succe sfu l year, a rnosr. inter esting one. Jn the cricket competition, our 1st XI was second-a position attain ed through the able leadership of B. Collins, our cricket captain. It may be well to mention that he was the only player to make his centut·y in the competition. I must however exhort ou r junjors towards a more serious attitude to the ga me for it i thu only that future success can be assured.

In the Athletic ports Meeting we were al o well represented. It is true that we felt, only too terribly, the absence of our champion athlete R. A. Gibbons who has on so many t imes, and in so many divisions in the field of sport, led th~ the House to victory or, to say the least, honouraible mention , but nevertheless the effort of our unde r 15 champi::n R. Field, together with those of OLH' other junior team were in trumental in gaining for us a well-earned third position.

When we turned to the F ootball competition we were standing in a goorl position in the senior division, but almost paradoxically our junior team lost in every match and so negated our chances altogether.

However, there were still laurels in store for u . For the firsb. t ime since ou1· inauguration, Pilgrim House emerged victorious at the Aquatic Sports. It was indeed a fitting climax to our efforts. And although the team as a whole must be congratulated, special praise is due to J. W. Holder our swimming captain and his younger ,brother who carried ou r under 13 attack nobly.

Our results in the classroom were also quite · good and to those boys who will be sitting this year the House wishes them the best of luck.

The House Social was as usnal second to none and the beha';viour of the boys impeccalble. The House would here like to e>cpress i ts sincerest appreciation of Mr. Ramsar an's guidance as H.ouse Master timing Mr. Cameron's albsencc.

Mr. Ramsaran was always a sou rce of inspiration both in the classroom and on the field. Indeed, cLuring many of our matches, his exhor ting words from the "touch line" did much to encourage our team.

In conclusion, I must ask the memberM of Pilgrim House to throw their best energies into all their struggles; count every failure, and a step to further achievements and success must surely be yours.

The beginning of the Autumn Term saw the entrance of a 1,umber of new boys to our house who quic!Jy adapted themselves to our cusloms. At the e11cl of this term we ha.d a most enjoyable time a.t the annual Chr istmas House Social.

We had the pleasure of the company of the new Prin cipal and othe1; distin guished guests. We bade good lu ck to G. M. Ba.ird our former H ouse Captain who left us at the end of th e te rm. Th e house tlicl well to, end up third in the Cricket Competition.

'I'he Spring Term. was crowded with school activities of every sort in wh ich Weston House participated. Our greatest success in the field of sport was the winning of the Championship Shi eld at the Annual Athletic Sports : we were runners up for the Standard Point Shield . Special mention must be made of G. M. Ba.ker and B. B. Hope who were the champ,ions for the 'Under 15' and 'Under 17' divisions respectively, L E. Miller and J. A. Proctor. The play "Twelfth Night" was produced dul"ing the term and we had the tJ>rivilege of having one of the most outstanding actors.

The Summer Term is one in which the accent is on examinations but we held our own in the Football Competition, performing creditably. I. H. Harewood our former House Captain and C. T . Manson-Hing mu st be congratulated on reaching the standard at the examination required for the British Guiana cholarship. Athletic Notes

BACCHUS After thr e po tr;onemenL, due, in the first place, to t he cricket tourna ment at Bo urda and, after, to rain, our annual athletic sports came off with its us ual success on Monday 30th March. In contrast to t he previous dates, we had delightful weather with b1·illiant sunshine and cloud-studded blue skies, and at t he crack of t he pistol the curtain rnse on a day of keen competition and wonderful sportmanship, m which five records were shattered. In the under 13 division young ~atthews, running in fine style, ea j)y outdistanced hi opponents while in Lhe Under 15 division although t here ·was no outstanding athlete, the competition wa keen Jervis of the D'Urban Hou e proved himself Under 17 sprint champion again t the tiff competiti on of ,h is fleet-footed opponents but it wa Byron Hope of Weston House who by his magnificent performance in alJ events carried off the champion cup for that division. This particular sports meeting aw t he rise of Wong of Percival House, in the la, t year of his school career, to athletic fame. Showing splendid form ·a nd good judgment, he outclassed his rivals for the open championship.

His Grace the Archbi hop of the West Indies kindly consented t o distribute the prizes and after this ceremony had been pel'formed graciously gi·anted a hol iday on the next da.y, Tuesday.

- - ---- -The Coronation games provided Queen' Colkge with :et another opportunity for covering herself , ith glory. Of the five unit originally proposer!, only four (cricket, football, voll ey ball and table tenni ·) were actually.contested, the ath l-etics b.eing unfortunately pos tpo ned. Queen 's emerged victorious in all fo ur un its, but T ut orial High School, pr ved themselves worthy rivals, contesting all fou r f inals.

In the cricket competition, we engaged and defeated St. Thomas E .I. in the first round, then St. Stanislaus came and went the way of the others in the semifinal. The final again t Tutorial Hi gh provided some an. iou s moments for Q.C. but we eventually won by nine w ickets.

T he fi rst ro und football resulted in a dr a.w with Guianese College who wt? beat 3-nil in t he replay. St. ·'tan i ·laus were then defeated by one goal to n il in an exciting semi-fipal. We bad things all our own way in the final which resulted in a 6-nil win for us.

T he Table Tennis and Volley Ball competitions were both ea iiy won by us after two preli minary rounds in the former, and one in the latter.

One gratify in g feature of the competition was the fine spi1iit shown and keen interest evinced in all the games.

Congratulations must go to those schools which found it possible to partieiipate in these games, and while patting our elve on the ,b ack, we cannot refrain fro m wishing the others better luck next time.

Cricket (1953)

by LEROY JACKMAN There ,vas a marked improvement in the game this season prnbably due to the increased facilities offered when the chool entered a team into the Rajah Cup ( third-class) Competition .

•

A greater number of boys seized the opportunity to take part in competitive cricket, and in addition there were the special oronation Cup games.

In the Gas wp competition, up to the end of ·the second half, the school team was leading in Section A. Fewer catches were dropped this season and if this standard of fielding i continued in the next half, the team hould reach the finals easily.

In the Wight Cup competition there was a slight improvement on last year's showing. A num ber of pr omising youngsters featured here which augurs well for next season.

The Rajah Cup team ·er ed as a nur ery for the Wight Cup team. Like all one day fixtures, matche were played here in a happy-go-lucky p1rH. evertheles the youngster held their mvn against their maturer opponents and fought hard to gain a place in the Wight Cup team, which many of them succeeded in doin.g .

Once again the school retained t he J a.cob up, the emblem of Intercollegiat~ su.premacy. Having defeated St. Stanislaus in a tight game in t he semi-finals, we gained the right to meet Berbice H igh School. The Berbice boys were outplayed in the finals and barely succeeded in staving off an innings defeat.

House cricket was r obbed of its importance this season ,by the extra interest in competitive games. everthele s some good cores were turned in. Percival and Austin Houses came on to.p in their respective ections. The latter by winning the finals, have succeeded in carving another niche on the Championsnip Shield.

T he cricket team, by winning all its matches, enaibled t he school to win the beautiful Coronation Cup. This cup was contested for by secondary schools in the city. The time limit imposed on this competition (each side batting for forty overs) taught the .players to score faster and to ibowr economically. It also served to bring young people together who hardly have other ·op,portunities of meeting in the field of sport.

Tutorial H igh School put LLP a good f ight in the finals; a good per.fol'mance for a school that ,h as s uch limite<l QIJ)portu:n ities for p ractice.

Vast improvements in the methods of travel have made modern cricket not only a pa time, but a trade, a profession. The West I ndies are one of the leading nations in world cricket today. People in B.G. are always complaining aibout the few Guiancse players who are included in W.I. Learns. IL is up to you boys t o show the Islands th.~t you too a re coming In ternat.ionals. W. A. OHIN : A most patient and painstaking /batsman. A useful leg-spin bowler and fair cover fieldsman. One of the team's most consistent scorers, we will miss his services next season. He is going up to the U.C.W.I. to further his studies.

M. BAJIRD : A competent opening batsman with some strokes of his own. good wicket-keeper he also will 1be leaving the colony soon.

R. COLLINS : A new find who has developed into one of the best all-r ounder s in the school. As a batsman, he is graceful and elegant. His off-spinner:. have spelled t he doom for many batsmen this season. A fair fieldsman, he should go far in the ·g ame.

J. BLACKMiAN : A good medium pace bowler who may be used as a substitute new ball bowler. An aggressive batsman, and a good sometimes brilliant fieldsman.

N. PHILLIPS : Another newcomer who with some more big match e~erience should develop in to a good bats man . A good substitute behind the wicket , he is also a fair close-to-the-wicket fieldsman.

Mr. T. B. RLOHIMONID : An opening bowler who was again the mainstay of the bowling: a merry No. 9 batsman and trying fieldsman.

A. F. R. BISHOP : A slow left-arm bowler who is among the Colony's best: an uncertain batsman but sound fields:man.

F. MONGUL : Slo,w medium of.f-spinner who has not 1been used much this season : an aggressive bat and sound fieldsman.

C. ROBERTS : One of the best batsmen in the team. Powerfully 1built, as soon as he gets going, he hits the ball very hard. A good coverpoint fieldsman .

R. A. GIBBONIS : As an opening batsman he reached his true form t his season a.nd hit the ball1 with tremendous power ; but it was as a wicket-keeper that he shone most and was nearly selected to represent the W.I. against India .

L. A. J.kCKMAN (Capt.) : Our present skipper. Sound number 3 batsmai, with s trokes. A fair medium fast opening bowler who 1bowled with some s uccess this season. His batting has fallen off due to examinations, but he should regain his form now. A good near to the wicket fieldsman. A safe catch.-L.G.C.

J. HALY : The other opening batsman and like his partner is extremely slow.

W, FRA ER : A nimble-footed and delightful batsman to watch when on the go. Scores most of his runs on the off-side but should learn to get hia left foot acros for the off-drive. A useful right-arm leg-break bowler.

At nets hould practise more to gain control of length.

J . RAIMJPHAL : A good ibatsman who can ,be very forceful when the occasion demand . Has not had much succes in recent matches. point fieldsman.

R. WISHART : Has the most ,b eautifu l forward...play against slow bowlers.

Should learn to place hi shots and not lean back when off-driving. This naturally robs his strokes of any force they may have. A useful rightarm leg-break bowler. Should practise very hard at nets for control for the ofrf-break and for change of pace.

R. LEILA : A slow left-arm ,bowler who spins a vicious off..:break on which he relies too much. Unfortunately has no idea of control and assiduous practice in this is required . Should bowl the leg-break and the straight-ball much oftener and force the bat man to play at the ball. Has turned in some good performances as a right-arm bat man.

J . V. ARCH R : A medium-paced off-break bowler.

Variation badly needed, especially in pace and pitch. Should attack the middle and off-stumps more with an occasional winging away to leg and a short-leg ready .

Hammers the ball into the ground inst ad of slinging it through the air.

R. GIB 'ON :

outswings.

Has played a few matches. A very fast right-arm bowler who ould get more wickets if he bowls to his field .

R LAM : A fair lbatsman who can show some forceful strokes. Hard and constant practice needed . Bowls an off.,break lbut his length could be improved.

J. COLE : A wicket-keeper and batsman. Needs more 1111tiative and polish behind the stump and should learn to advi e the bowler during his run to the wicket. A very stolid bat man. Crouches too much and this interfei:es with his drives.

E. LONDO The Captain of the team. A left-arm bowler of the Bill John ston tyrpe who bowls medium to fast inswings and slow leg-breaks. Inclined to overtoss the lball too often and this is due partly to a faulty rnn to the wicket. His leg breaks need much more finger-spin. Is a poor batsman and should practise aga inst seasoned •bowlers.

FOOTBALL NOTES.

T-he past year has been an unhappy one for our footiball. In last year's ,Junior League competitions, \\'C' unaccountably encountered a series of defeats which resulted in fir t round knockouts from the arvo Shield (by Victoria F.C. l, and from the Demerara .Junior Cup (by P.O. & Med. S.C.).

After a were again unfortunate better game.

lapse of some year , the F . A. Trophy up was contested, and we knocked out. In the replay with Smith hurch F. . we were in losing through a number of missed chances after playing the ·

We had urvived the rigours of a keenly contested Reed Lea,gue competition and reached the f inal against St. Barnabas F .C. on ly to be defeated agai n in a match which reached a high standard. Once more, mi sed chances were responsi.ble for our defeat in a game which we should have won.

Greatest 1blow of all came in the Dias Cup semi-final which we lost 3-1 to St. tanislaus. In the first half, we had the better of the game and succeeded in sco1·i ng, but, in the second ha lf, our play went to pieces and St. Stanislaus were able to score th ree goals.

Up to the time of writing, the J unior League competitions for 1!)5-3 have not as yet commenced, ibut thanks to the efforts fit·st of Mr. 0. T. Donald and later Mr. 0. R. Green, two old ·boys who have 1been coaching the team. We have shown some signs of recovery by winn ing the footba ll competition for the oronation Cup. In thi competition between the seconrlary schools of Georgetown, 'We defeated St. Stanislaus 1-nil in the semi-final nncl then defeated Tutorial High School 6-nil in the final.

Finally, I mu t say that the only way the team can hope to recover lost prestige, is by regular attendance at all practices.

Hockey Notes The interest in Hockey shown by the boys this year was not ver y encouraging. At several practices many boy w re ab ent. . The succes of school hockey shou ld depend upon agileness and speed, for we will surely lack experience and crat:tiness, w.hich are only acquired by yenrs of match playing. Here again tho boys a1·e guilty, man)r being slow and exhausted long before the end of the match. Th ese are p robaibly the r easons fot· nr d isappoin tingly poor play in t11e J::1st season. Tn many games the school lost 1by far no g r eat margins. Qneen' must buck up or we w ill be omitted from the league. in future and it will ' be ou r own faults. ·

At present I am try ing to arrange with somebody to coach us once a week, in the hop that ,t he standard of hockey in Queen's will impro,e. It would not he just in saying to do well we must win but at lea. t ,ve m11st give a good account of ourselves. What I mean defeats should as 9-0 and 11-0 should be reduced to 3-1 or 2- 0.

A cl tachment of cadets attended the Queen's Birthday Parade wit.h the other Local Force. units, and though there was a slight shower as we marched off frorr: Eve L ary, we were not dreriched to the skin :r we were the year before.

Both Serge,'lnt .. Clarke and Wishart won spoon in th e B.G.R.A. Block Members' open sight (open range) spoon shoots ; Sgt. Clarke won the June spoon w ith 78/ 105, and Sgt. Wi shart the .July spoou with 75 / 105. Thus 0111 of a total of fivr. spoons that were shot for by the Block Members during 1952, the Gnclet Corps secured two-members of the Corps were placed in all five shoots.

Two Cadets-Sgts. Clarke and vVishart--were included in a. Colony tea m which defeated a team from H.M.S. "Veryan Bay" , in an open range open sight match. Scores were : B.G.R.A. team 584/840, "Veryan Bay" 527.

Our annual ca.mp, which lasted from Thursday 7th, to Friday 15th, Augu st was held at Atkinson Field, om barracks being the fo1111er .S. Army Hospital.

We were divided into two platooons, each of two s€<ctions (Cpl. Chin, L / C'pl.

Boston, Cpl. Chan and L/ Cpl. Rickford were section commanders, whilst Sgts.

Wishart and Wi ltshire were platoon commander.s ) with Sgt. Clarke acting a~ C.S.M. Feeding arrangements were in the capable hands of C.Q.M.S. Kerry, and R.S .M. Pilgrim and Sgt. Success were kindly lent to us as instructors by the Volunteer Force. Lieut. Maudsley, our 0.C., was in charge, with Lieut. Barker second in command; Mr. Hetran1, who became an officer in September, also attended camp.

We were unfortunatelv unable to use the open range, as the target hut ]1ad been demolished and all the targets removed, and thus had to construct our O.jln rniniatme (30 yards) range. Sgt. Clarke was first in the shooting competition and C.Q.M.S. Kerry econd, Se:t. Clarke thus winning the Hodgson Cup for. the school year, 1951-52·-Congratulations !

Among the other activities at camp was a field exerci ' e and a "treasurehunt" which more or less took the fo r m of a cross~cotmtry run. Cadets also received in truct.ion in the Bren gun, and lessons on pe1•sonal camouflage and concealment, and certain senior cadets and N.C.O .'s were given the opportun ity of firing the Bren, Sten and two-inch morta r.

During camp there were four promotions-Cpl. Wil tshi re to Sgt. and Cadets N . C. Bacchus, Burnett and Mill er to L/Cpls.

The last clay was spent, as us ual, in general cleaning up, loading stores onto the truck, etc. We were conveyed to town b;v t he "R. H . Carr", arrivin~ at, J5.00 hours.

..4 ut,111111 7.'ei·1n Mr. D. Hetram, who saw war service with the R.A.F., joined the Corps at the beginning of this term as a Second Lieutenant.

We must extend our congrat ulations to our 0.C., who was promoted to the rank of Captain during the term. Other promotions were Sgt. Wishart to C.S.M., Cpls. Chan and Chin to Sgts., L/ Cpl. Seaforth to Sgt. (i/ c stores ) and L/ Cpls. Boston and Rickford to Cpls.

Twenty-seven 1·ecruits were admitted, thus bringing the strength of the Corps to three officers and sixty-one other ranks.

A detachment of Cadets was on parade on Remembrance Day. Owing to rain, the usual pa rade at the Cenotaph was cancelled and a Church Parade, ut St. George's Cathedral was held instead, after which the column marched past the O.A.G., who took the salute.

At the B.G.R.A. Annual Prize Meeting, held in September-October, the Cadet team, consisting of C.S.M. Wishart, Sgt. Clarke, Cpl. Rickford and Cadet R. Chan, came third in the Clementi Cup Shoot (open to teams of four, from units of the Local Forces) ; four teams from the B.G.V.F. and tw-0 from t he Police Force also competed. The scores were as follows: 1s t P olice No. 1 team 363/420, 2nd B.G.V.F. No. 2 team 315, and 3rd Cadet team 311. Individual scores for Q.C.C.C. team were Sgt. Clarke 86/ 105, C.S.M. Wishart 83, Cpl. Rickford 73 and Cadet Chan 69.

In the Blackwood Memorial Cup shoot (open to all serving men and N.C.O.'s of the Local Forces) C.S.M. Wishart was third with 49/ 56, three points behind the winner. The President's Cup (open to junior members of the Local Forces and to all members of the Cadet Corps) was won by Sgt. Clarke with 26/ 28, whilst Cpl. Rickford and C.S.M. Wishart were third and fourth with 24 and 2~. respectively.

During Nov.-Dec., a series of B.G.R.A. miniature range open sight shoots took place on which various certificates were awarded. "Daily Mail" Certificate -C.S.M. Wishart 4th 91/ 100. "News of World" Certificate-C.S.M. Wishart 89/ 100, "Daily Telegraph" Certificate-Cpl. Rickford 1st 92/ 100, C.S.M. Wishart 2nd 89. Both C.S.M. Wishart and Cpl. Rickford represented the colony in the Colonial Small Bore (open sight) Postal Shoot, the C.S.M. tying for first place with Mr. Ibbott, "A" class shot, and winning the Chas. R. E. Bell Certificate (available to the best individual shot in the team) with 186/ 200 after a re-shoot.

C.S.M. Wishart and Cpl. Rickford were also included in the B.G.R.A. "B'' teatn in a miniature range aperture sight shoot against H.M.S. "St. Austen Bay", the C.S.M. topping the "B" team's scores with 89/ 100, Cpl. Rickford making 81. Team totals were, B.G.R.A. "A" team 334/ 400, "B" team, 339, "St. Austell Bay" "A" team 285, "B" team 283.

On Speech Day, His Excellency the O.A.G., the Hon. ,John Gutch, C. M.G., O.B.E., on his arrival inspected a Guard-of-Honour under Capt. Maudsley, after receiving the Royal Salute. After the presentation of prizes, His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies expressed his pleasure in seeing so many prizewinners in uniform, and said that he hoped to see more next year.

Sp1·in9 7.'e1"m 19.:i:J The Corps was on parade on the day of the arrival of H.R.H. the P,rincess Royal, and lined the route along which the Royal P arty passed.

Three members of the Corps-C.S.M. Wishart, Cpl. Rickford a nd L/ Cpl. Miller-ar e at present engagc<l in training members of the Junior Red Cross ,i n foot drill . Actually the first two started to ass ist in drilling the Red Cross from October last year, and put a lot of work in helping to get them "up to scr atch" for the Princess Royal's visit.

A Field Day, the ma in activities of which were to have been a series of P latoon and Section exercises, was to have been held in the Botanical Gardens on Thursday, l!)th March. Owing to the weather, however, the plans had to be modified, so in the morning the Cadets shot on the B.G.V.F. miniature range, and the ro::rnits were given musketry lessons.

After lu nch, we marched to Kelly's Dam wh€re a series of "attacks", ag~inst a small defence party, took place. The attacks were led by C.S.M. W ishart, Lt.-Col. Haywood, Capt. Maudsley and Cpl. Rickfor d, in that order. We were amply supplied with blank ammunition, which added a r ealistic effect to t he rror eeding::;, and all got soaked to the skin as the surroundin g area was f looded after the heavy rain on the previous nig ht. Despite the weather, the Field Day was very successful, as all of us en joyed it immensely, and w.e must extend our heartiest thanks to Lt.-Col. E. J. Haywood, M.B.E., T .D. (C.O. of the B.G.V.F.) fo r organising an acetivity which incorporated an enjoyable outing with valuable training.

During the holidays at the end of this term, two miniature range shoots were held, on 14th and 23r d April. The results wer e as follows: Tues. 14th 1st Cadet R. G. Lee 64/ 65, 2nd C.S.M. W is hart 64, 3rd Cpl. Rickford 63, and 4th Cadet R. L. Kin g 59. Thurs . 23rd 1st Sgt. Chin 65/ 65, 2nd C.S.M. Wishart and Cpl. Riokford 64, 4th Cadet Chow 61. L/ Cpl. Burnett and Cadets Ridley, Rodway, Sampson and Stoby also made good scores. . We wer e not included in the Queen's B irthday Parade this year, which took the form of" a cer emonial parade on Eve Leary Parade Ground, but attended as spectators .

Black berets with B.G.V.F. cap badges (formerly we wore no cap badge) ar e now being worn instead of khaki field service caps, and we have chan ged back to the old leathel' equ ipmen t owing to a s hortage (locally) of the morP modern web equ ipment.

Our first parade during Cor-0nation Week was t o have been a Chu rch P arade (on Sunday May 31st) with the other Local Forces units, but this was cancelled because of the weather. On Coronation Day the Corps was incl uded in t he m ar ch past the Governor ·at the Sea-Wall, an d on the following nig ht we attenderl the Torchlight P arade.

AN HYPOTHETICAL EXAMINATION OF:

. '' Dark Space''

In presenting my interpretation of space, it must not the taken as derived, even in the slightest prop'Ortion, from experimental inquiry. or, if we are to believe that "novelty must arise chiefly in the mode of harmonising ano. developing ideas," is any pretence made to it being vigorously authenticated.

The truth lies in the fact that common observation has here been subjected to very cursory reasoning. To convert such observation, therefore, to scientific realisation, the sU!bject has ,been treated more from a logical, than physically accurate, view;point. With this understanding, first a preview : Current philosophical views on space regard it as a consciousness rath,n· than a direct perception of mind. This view was particularly entertained by Kant, but specifically denied by Spencer on the grounds that a treatment of Space alternately as an entity and non-entity ('·objectively" and "subjectively" in his terms) yielded no justifiaible assertion one way or another*. Unfortunately, any particular piece of argument in support of either view cannot be expatiated on here. Suffice it in say ing that the controversy whether to regard space as an entity or non-entity is age-old, and can easily offer no positive conclusion. I do maintain, nevertheless, that if the meaning of the term "Space" was ta:ken less in extension and given a more astronomical scrutiny, a closer approach to a true assertion may be effected. Alpparently, writings on the topic are elf-consumed in procuring a definition rather than a desC?'iption of space-and this, •before endeavouring first to sound "Space" as an a tronomical curiosity. I find therefore that a distinction between "astronomical," or "interstellar," space and "absolute" space are necessarily involved.

In the Jig.ht of the aforesaid, the solution of "ab olute" space depends entirely on Jogic,ial philosophy coupled witih philosophical insight. However I roan see this solution being derived mainly from negative propositions (e.g . Space is not materialistic, etc.) But, however self-evident these propositions may appear, they do not, when weighed per se, or even collectively, admit of conception. On the other hand, an investigation of "astronomical" space can alone provide the more intensive meaning of "s,pace," I am convinced. (This. is already evidenced in Einstein's "curved space") . To this, consequently, I ·will devote the following pa1 agraphs.

Dis,p ensing somewhat with "atbsolute" ideas, let us examine those phenomena which manifest them ·elves in a material frame and in material circumstances.

There are no g round s for doubting that, if an observatory were erected at any point in "space,'' stars (regardless of the ir density) will still be in view. It is not then ,p resumptuous to surmise that every poin t of space. is 1·eceiving light rays. Still neglecting the unequal distribution of the stars, it is evident that the intensity of li·g bt at every point is a long way from being even. Accord• Spencer : First Principles,

This fact we kno·w to be resident in the Law of Inverse Squares. But a hypercritical examination would demand an explanation more deeply immer ed in the cause of thi s dimunition.

Stated difierently, t he Law disclo ·es the relationship between illum ination ancl distance ,but offers no explan ation of why the illumin ation should be ~ubject.ed to s uch a var iation. ···Shou ld we accept the a se rtion of light-energy being propagated in waves, and as im il ate their waveli ke nature with the ripples on a liqu id surface, then perhap. we may a.ttri1bute the progressive tlimunition of energy to an elon gatio-n of the wave-length.

But the questi<c>n now arises whether this dimunition through elongated wave-length is an inherent property of light energy, or whether it is due to any other factor. In other words, whether a ."progressive dimunition" should, in fine, be termed a "progre ·sive dissipation.'' Now, we observe a similar phenomenon 1·elative to light transmission on earth; and we have every reason to believe that it is not occasioned iby anytbi11g material (:where material mean s visibly opaque ) . As a consequence, "space" may well be composed of any tran parent vapors so far a the impairment of light t ransmission is concerned.

And indeed, certa in facts stand in support of this. As an instance, it is irrefutably established that thousands of meteorites (each minute no doulbt, but ultimately appreciable in their contribution) enter our atmosphere dai ly ; a nd reasoning by probability confirms the presence of similar particles diffused throughout every portion of space. May we not confi dently declare then that our '·da r k" univenrn is due essentially to many of our "local" skies superimposed one upon the other to an infinite extent ?

Another :i mple consideration which may g ive a fea ible tenor to the entire di scu sion may be adduced thus : Consider two transparent and closed vessel$ -one placed in an ob cure corner, the other directly in the :path of an intense beam of sunlight. With attention focu ssed on the vessels themselve · (i.e. without r~ference to the surround in g ob · cu rity or illumination in which lhe vessels are respectively situated ) no di crimin ation may be remarked between the two vessels. With a knowledge now of the frame of circumstances in which we dcli•berately placed th e vessels, we allow th at there must ind eed ·be some discrimina tion ;between the two vessels. Careful circums,pection can contradisLingui h the vesse l in the following way: In the secon d case, where where the vessel is pl aced in the beam of sun light, its contents are possessed of energy capable, for example of activating a sun-valve, o,r urging graphite particles to evolve along definite parts.** In this it is opposed to the first case where no such action would be observed. mission of light being not neces ar.ily dependent on a material interspace (as is implied by "radiaLi n" ) the light may just as well have been transmitted through the fir t ve :.el as through the second for all their '·contents" are able to indicate; which in equivalent term sugg.ests that there being some form of instrument pre ·ent to detect such energy, or even that there was any energy at all, contradicts t he idea of space. When exnmined closely, however, this will prove a confu ion again between "absolute" and "interstellar" space; the rea ·on being that "interstellar" ·pace alone offers ome examination in a material frame, which, when denied, con\'ert it into "absolute'' space.

A the upshot of these considerations, we may make 1bold to conceive a 'space" wholly, though not uniformly, illuminated · and also filled to the cubic inch with or dinary material as we know it on earth. Probably, the philo ophically "absolute' pace exi t in inter-atomic pace, or in the pace allowed between ut thi · may evidently lead to an electron and nucleus in the atom itself. examination of "enclo eel space," which, whatever it may prove, we have not space to di cu s here.

Volley Ball

The most recent int roduction into the games curriculum of the school was Volley Ball. The occasion was afforded by the Coronation Games Competition which was held among secondary schools of the city.

The game excited wide and immediate in ter est throughout the school, so much so, that fo r the first two weeks of practice the attendance was shrl;ply overwhelming. Much as this was appreciated it tended to r etard rapid progress towards competition standard, and a rigid el imination had to ibe started.

The result was t he choosing of fourteen outstanding players and these settled down to systematic practising. For this purpose our "Hall" was un.parallelecl for we were able to play in all conditions of the weather which was extremely urufa.vour able throughout the entire competition. The final choice fell on Kaufmann, Proctor, Lam, Roberts, Dummett and Carter (Capt) .

Nor did the team disappoint its supporters for at the conclusion of t he series it emerged viotorious by !beating all opposition in both rounds.

It is earnestly hoped that the game be made a 'Permanent fixture in the school as it affords a most healthy form of recrea.tion. My suggestions are a court out of door and another indoors to cope with, what it appeai·s to be now, our uncertain weathe r. Finally I would reserve t he rights of t he game to the fourth, fifth and s ixth forms as the smaller hays will be unable to serve the ban · over the net properly, or even to do justice to the positions a.t the net.

Queen's College has always led the way. Why, therefore should we hesitate to •b ring into prominen-0e among the Colleges a game so interesting and enjoya;blo and w hich can .b e played ins,p ite of the weather ?

VOLLEY BA L L' CHARACT ERS. DUMMETT : A sturdy back but inclined to misjudge t he approach of the ball on account of his being somewhat slow in movin g.

ROBERTS : Another well-built player who is not very comfort::uble at the net positions. P lays well at the back but has a few off moments in each game.

A powerful ser vice.

LAM : This short stocky player has a game winning service and flick t he ball well from the lback. P lays well somet imes at the· net.

PROCT OR : A versatile player who plays his best at left net at which position he executes a well judged slam,

KAUFMANN : Plays fairly well at the net with a forceful slam to the end of the court; should however try to get uip higher when slamming.

NICHOIBOiN : The smallest me1111ber of the team is a most ene1getic player.

Places his slams most of the time but is too erratic at other times.

CHtA,R,LE}S : A strongly built player who should make a good back if he concentrates much more on the ball. A most uncertain service.

CART1ER : A fairly well-·built player who plays any position on the court.

Although very proficient at the net he sometimes makes errors of judgement at the back. An inspiring captain.-C.A.R.).

• Alexander Johnson sat on the taible before the class gazing absent-mindedly into a ,book which was opened before him. The class-room was surprisingly quiet this morning. This, of course, struck Alexander Johnson as ,being very strange, eeing that Christopher Jones-the nosiest and mo t troublesome student in the form-wns present. Recollecting that he had not slept quite well the previous nig.ht, Alexander John son decided to take advantage of the situation, and, sinking wearily into his chair, was fast asleep five minute· after. In less tJhan fifteen minutes Alexander Johnson imagined himself sa ilin g through the air in :m American air liner to U.S.A. A burst of lau,ghter brought him back to earth. He sprang from hi chair, and without making enquirie as to who made the noi e-since that boisterous laugh could have been made only by one lun atic-, add ressed Christopher Jone!; "yon donkey! where do you suppose you are? in a pig sty? " "I could not have possibly thought that," was the insolent reply.

"And why, pr ay?" countered Alexander Johnson. ·'Becau e donkeys as a ru le live in stables."

Alexander Johnson :was dumbfounded . "Of a ll the impert inent thin.gs ! You donkey! look .at ,me! What do I look like to you?"

"The same animal we were discussing.'· 11r. Johnson was flabbergasted. This was too much. Flying from behind his ,t able he apprnached the insolent Jones, turning over a chair or two in his advance. He stopped about six inches away from the- culprit : yet he hacl difficulty keeping his mouth from encircling the latter's no e.

"Are you insinuating that I am a donkey? is there an y 11esemblance uebween a donkey and myself'?''

"But for a few exceptions, I should say one could hardly know the difference.'' · "Such as .. . . " "Well apart from your mouth which exceeds the donkey'· in length and your nostrils which are a trifle larger than the donkey's, I shou ld say it :s almost impossible to f ind a dissimilarity between you two animals."

Mr. J ohnson raised his hand to ,bring it forcefu lly down on Jones' mouth, when he was interrupted ,by the entrance of Miss Saunders, the principal of the school. Mr. Johnson froze in hi s action. He anticipated what was coming. All he cou ld do was to ,gape sh epishly at the principal who stood watching him thro ugh a pair of lens-Jes· speciacleP "Alexander Adolphus Fitz Herbert .Tohnson ! 'How many times mu st I warn you about striking my pupils,

and my very best at that. Don't you know that Chr·istopher Jones' fa ther is the richest banker in the State and without his support this school could not have been built? You might have been in the streets now for all I know, begging your bread, had it not been fo1· Chris' father." ''Miss Saunders I sincerely think that .

"

"Don't attempt to think. It's beyond your ability. Were I to tell you what I think of you ... . .. Well ? What are you wait ing for stupid ?

Mr. Johnson could not bring himself to refuse the orders of this masculine woman, .and the fow moments he stood hesitating, he took in her features again.

The 1b road fla,t, emaciated face which looked as if a mule had accidently stepped on it. "Poor mule," thought Mr. Johnson "he might not have a foot now. Such a hard cruel face." Her teeth were striving hard to outdistanc~ both lips; so she looked like one of those wild hogs which roam theJ forests of the interior, and which depend upon their tusts for food and protection. In all probability Mr. John~on thou,g-ht she had come from the zoo.

The arrival of a male visitor, rather effeminate in looks and dress; saved Johnson from the disgrace of having to apologise to one of his st udents. He stood motionless for some minutes, not da ring to move, and expecting every minute the re-entrance of t he malignant Miss Saunders.

A!fter standing sheepishly in that position for a fe.w minutes amid the jeers of the boys, he ventured to return to his seat. ·Glancing instinctively at the clock, which would have 1better suited the ru'b;bis-h heap, he realized that it was time for dismissal. The students hurried from the room with shouts and bursts of laughter, without even waiting for Mr. Johnson to dismiss them.

Ten minutes later, Johnson, after hurriedly collecting his belonging , actually ran .from the room to avoid a second meeting with Miss Saunders. In his haste he completely forgot the deplorable condition of the stairs.

"Hi Superman! that was a wonderful dive indeed.' Mr. Johnson raised his eyes painfully to meet the gaze of Ohristopher Jones who was totally resiponsi,ble for what just occurred.

"You blustering idiot! Do you have to go breaking down my stairs too?"

J ohnson· did not have to look up to know that he was accosted by Miss Saunders. Without fu r ther ado he got up and hurried away, followed by a peal of laughter from the juibilant Jones.

The bespattered Mr. Johnson was in a dilemma. His only suit spoiled. !magine ! No sooner had Johnson entered his door than he sought consolation

in tears. Throwing himself down on the f loor he wept unceasingly. Half an hour later he rUJi>bed his eyes and was preparing to get up when his eyes caught sight of an envelope on the ground-apparently pushed through under the door. With trembling hands he broke the seal and these welcome words greeted his gaze : Sir:-

We, the board of Governors for the new school which was recently completed, 4t h March 1933, wish to extend our congratulation ... .

Johnson read no more. He knew immediately that he had been made principal for the new Government School. How he had prayed for that post.

After all his application was good and his qualifications up to standard, tho ugh he was somewhat poor. Rea rranging his bespattered garments he p r oceeded to the bank and thence to the store. From the former he withdrew the last of his · earnings and in t he latter he purchased a new outfit of clothes and other necessities.

Monday morning. The bell rang for the school to assemble. As J ohnson was not required to fu lfil his new ,p ost t ill the following Monday he decided to cont inue fo r the day at least at Miss Saunders' .

T he students were sur prised to see t he classr oom empty when t hey arr ived, as it was always customary of Mr. J ohnson to be in t he classr oom ,when the students arrived. F ive minutes had past. No Mr. J ohnson. The class began to feel discomfited. " I fo rgot to tell you iloys that Don.key won't 1b e in school fo r t he week," came from J ones. "vV:hy ? ? ?" was the eager question from the entire class.

"Well you see he soiled his only suit and that appanmtly will take one week to clean and . . . .

He said no more. Mr. Johnson himselif came in. He was a changed man.

Decked out in his new fawn suit, hat, tie and ·shoes to match, he looked a wonderful sight indeed.

"Well! well!" came from Jones.

"Shut up!" exploded Mr. Johnson with such vigour that the furnitu re-ol· what seemed more like pieces of board-shook. "I won't have you commenting on my clothes !" He paused. "Insolent Rogue! Don't you know the common r ules of etiquette? Come ibefore t he class and kneel!''

"Bu ...t. .....but si...r ......sir LL.I didn't refer to you" was all that Jones could say .

"Damn it!" screamed Mr. Johnson.

Jones obeyed unhesitantly. " At least your home-training should give you some idea as to how you ought to behave in the presence of your superiors."

"Ahm, aw, this insolent miscreant was trying lo be presumptuous, so ahrn, 1 just put him where he belongs." J ones who had regained courage by the entrance of Miss Saunders 1blurted out "But I don't belong here. My father is sending me to the n·ew Government School. So, how do you feel?"

'·Why are you leaving Chris?" asked Miss Saunder affectionately.

"I don't like the looks of this ape." ·'Aw, aw, eh, I do not think you

hould have any fears as to his leaving.'·

"WhY, ? ? " a ked Miss Saunders derisively. " ou see .. . eh h h, I'm the newly appointed principal and l do not think that I would tolerate rogues in my school." Both Mis· aunders and Jone ~ were flabbe1·gasted. Before ·he could speak Mr. Johnson turned to the clasai and said "l hope to see a few of you boys that side soon," ·ind without a backward glance marched through the door, proud of himself and his victory-a bright one indeed.

Scout Notes During the past year the troop has accomplished quite a grea,t deal.

Although we could not do as much practical scouting as we wanted to, we have had well-planned wide games and outings which have served to stir up keener interest.

In August we expect to have a six-day ea.mp extendin-g from the 4th! to the 10th at the Boy Scout amp site, Redwater Creek, Altkinson Field. The camp will be run on the patrol sys,tem, each 路patrol function as an independen,t unit.

Very keen interest is being evinced and patrol leaders are doing some very serious planning.

Throughout the year we have placed our services at the disposal od' all t hose who organise functions at the school and consequently we did a great dieal of ushering during the year. Our last assignment being the Pageant of the ;Commonwealth. In return for th is service we were treated to an educative and interesting film show ,by the British Council representative, Mr. 0 . E. Frean who w.as chairman of the Pageant Committee.

We are justly proud of our sponso.r, Mr. V. J . Sanger-Davies wJlo on Empire Day received the Medal of Mer1t for services rendered as Colony Commissioner of Gambia. He has, shown very great interest in the troop and its activitfos and is doirug quite a lot for us.

Troop 27 has been weil represented in all colony scout activities---(parades, competitions etc. In the RocLwell Cup Competition we gained thi11d iplace and on the same day we celebrated our 17th anniversary with a sumptuous "feed."

At the Coronation Camp Fire our sketch "The Old Ford Gar" was a great success.

The Rifle Competition for the Duke of Conna.ught's Challenge Shield will be shot off on 路Sunday, August 2. Our teams w ill be as follows : J unior Section : M. Too-Chung, S. McDonald, D. Pairaudeau and M. Os路borne.

We a.r路e the first troop in the colony to enter a rilfle competition and judging from our week1y practices we stand an even chance of doing well.

We bade farewell to two scouts during the past year :;_ To Ivor "Ho-Hi" Phillips, Queen's Scout, Budhman's Thong, who has gone to pursue studies in the U.K. To Ian. Shepherd, Patrol Second, Rattlesnake P.atrol, who has gone to Scotland. He received the iblack and gold troop scarf which was autographed by every member of the troop.

Swimming Sports Ou.r annual swimming sports were held on Tuesday, May 12, 1953 at the usual s ite, the G.F ,C. pool. The weather was fine and competition keen in all classes. P ilgrim house through the co-operative effor ts of its members was the winning house for the first time. Kaufman, the champion of the day, outswam his rivals in all events-an achievement on which we must shower our congratulations. In the under 13 division M. Ridley and G. B. Holder were the leading contenders. In the unde.r 15 N. Cossou emerged victor, while in the under 17 and open divisions Kaufman and V. Chin were the respective champions.

Our thanks must be rendered to the G.F.C. for the kind loan of their bat11 and to the masters who arranged the sports.

The past year has witnessed a remarkable upsurge of interest rn the stage, ooth within and w ithout onr school, and time and time again our spacio11s auditorium has ,been packed .to capacity with hundr ds of eager play and concert-goers. The chief factor hindering our ·school production has been ol: course, the lack of adequate and necessary school eq uipment, especially of a curtain. A "Stage Fund" h::t.S therefore been opened, into which net proceeds or part of the net proceeds acruing from concerts and plays staged in our hall have been placed. From this it is hoped to purchase all necessary fittings and equipment during the next few years.

During the year we staged successfoily two s hort sketches, a Shakespearian comedy, at scene in the Coronation ·'Pageant of the Commonwealth", and by the time this is in print, a Gilbert: and Sullivan one-act operetta, it is hoped, will have been added to this list.

The two sketches "lei Georgeto1wn" and "'I'he Duel,'' the former being in French, were offered on the 12th December, 1952 as a pa1t of our Speech Day Programme, and b0th in production and in performance a high standard was attained which set the tone for la.ter productions.

The Shakespearian comedy "Twelfth Night" was our next effoxt, and it Its cast was wa produced on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th March. drawn entirely from ,t he Fifth forms, who incidentally were studying the play ::is a set-book for the G.C.E . Ordinary Lev-el Cer t ificate Examinations 19-53, but despite thi, restricted choice with respect to cast, it proved to be a br illiant and unqualified success, ·md was especially popn laa: with foe matinee audience.

Fresh from t he rnccess of these two ventures we Lurnecl to give a loyal tribute to the Queen on the occasion of her coronation, by the st agir..g of a scene in the Pageant of the Commonwealth. This, ·'The Storm in g of Q11ebec" marking but one pha se in th e growth of the British Gommonweath of Nation · was perfo rmed by the boy$ of the IVB Ji .

It wa s in t hi s pa~eant with its magnificent settings and even more magnificent ligh t ing effec,ts, that our stage wa seen to its best ·advantage, and the performance of our boys, in conjunction with that of the rest ,of the Pageant cast which had been ckawn frolm many schools, was deser ving of the highest commendation.

And so we now attempt to bring to a fitting climax a ver y evetttful year, with the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan ope1-etta "Trial by Jury."

The cast has been drawn from the Upper and Middle S ·hool, and as they are, to our kn owledge., in thi s fi elrl of opera, treadin g on untouched soil as far llS this colony is concerned, we wish them every uccess.

The part played in these productions by our new Principal, our music Mistress, the Masters and their wives who supervi serl the designing and the fittin g of costumes, cannot be too high ly praised, and wi th their help we look forward to a brighter and better year for dramatics in Q. C.

There has been no open competitions in the colony fo r the last year and most of the senior players -rightly ocouipi d t hemselves in other games. However the lower school has •been -practising in the afternoon s from 3-----4. When it was learnt that the coronation games included taible tennis, practices were held du,r ing the Easter Holidays. Here t he resipopse was very ,e ncouraging and the resu lt was that we found a 11ew player namely Bul'nctt. The selecterl team of Phillips, Jones, Burnett and W-0ng was victories.

We now hearti ly welcome back an old iboy, Mr. Batchelor who is ve ry interested in table-ten11is and has already clone mu ch fol' us . As soon as he arrived he made our acquaintances and gav;e us some valua,ble tips and practice for the oronation T a,ble Tenni. . At t he beg.innin g of the final tenn .he selected some boys from the midd~ e ,wcl lower schooJ for special practices and coaching by him self and p,robably has· hi s eye on many mor,e youngsters.

The Colony was recently visited by a South 'J'r'inidad tea m and Queen's College had th hon our of m eeting them in a fixture. The team picked was Phi,llips, Colli ns, J.ones, Burnett and Wong. We lost 2-3 in an exciting match and the boys were treated tc ·n fine exhilbi,tion of ,t a•b le tenni s. Phillips and Wong won their games.

We now extend our congratu lations to Mir. Batchelor and G. Wong who were elected to r epresent the colony in the Second T est, and t o N. Flhillips who was select ct in the Third Test. They all performed creditably.

The 1953 Wolf Cub Athl etic Sports was held on Saturday, May lfith, at the Y.M. C.A. Pack '2,7 winners in 1951 a nd 195~ lost t he Akele, Trophy this year to Pa.ck 5.

Some of t he Cubs rode up to Beterverwagting with Bagheera a nr. ~peni a day at the Beach in December, 1952.

The Pack provided entertainment fo r those attending- the 6th AnnuaJ General Meeting of the Demerara Local Associntion on Friday, 24th April, Hl53, when they presented the mime 'Babes in the V'oo.ds."

This was very well received by the audience.

The Cubs mu st be congr atulated too for their repeat performance of "Babes in the Woods" at the Annual May Day Fair of the Y.M.C.A. In F ebruary 1'.)53. the Colony Scout Council approved the issue of Warrants to Pack 27 Cubbers as follows : M. T. Lowe ···-· Assistant Cub Master.

The Cubs have been able to do some systematic work duri ng the year with the advent of Mr. Lowe to the Pack. iVIr. Lowe came to the Pack when he was most needed and so far has bern fo r ced to carry on unaided for two months whil e Bagheer a was out of town .

The Cubs consider themselves mo st fortunate in having Mr. Lowe as A.C.M. a111d extend the.ir thanks co the G.S.M. for enveigling him to join the P ack.

They are upon Lhat account of the greatest 0f all imprbvements.' , hi dictum of Adam Smith clearly depicts the intrinsic value of efficient transri ·tation to any country. It does this as effectively as if it had established tran!j1>1_:tation as the heart which pumps life into the arteries of lndu try and conuTlerce and eventually into th£.~ veins of wealth, progress and power. By this impression therefore, we are immediately made to realize that the lack of efficient transportation has greatly hindered our colony s development during the past ye~rs.

At present, B.G., Jacking sufficient capital and possessing a,n industrial hinterland, bas no. good road or railway system of inland commerce, and such commercial unity as she possesse , has been achieved mainly through the use of water transporta,tion. As a result of this, settlers cluster around the rivers and creeks, since f,u,rther inland they find themselves isolated and with every restricted opportunity of producing for an outside market.

As always, E.G. is tenacious to custom and anfaquities. This she upholds to such an extent that she will cling to the most ancient model of an invention with no intention whatsoevei· of letting it go even, for one of this great Atomic Age. This fact is evident by on e look at all th e motives of transiportation and especially at the water vehicles which have so great value economically. These vehicles range from the pre-historic canoe to the almost as historic (judging) from their speed and noise of propulsion) steamers; these form the backbone of inland transport and t rade. Indeed transportation would have experienced inces ant backache , had not aviation come to its rescue.

The railways which operate mostly along the coast, are the main expedients in the conveyance of sugar and rice to the capita.I for e:x;port. Their importance, therefore, for tbb reason cannot 1b e denied them, ,but their na·mei "railways·· should, beyond all doubt . neve1· be applied to t hem in this modern age.

I remember once while travelling on the West Coast railway, a missionary stated that the very train in which we were seated was made mention of in the Bible. I immedia,t ely opposed this on the grounds that trains d~d not exist in biblical day. But the reverend gentleman calmly opened his book and read "Ami God made all things which ct·eepeth upon the earth." But, speaking truly, the speed cxf the ra.ilmay is its only defect, the din it creates by the clanging of rusty iron must be added to its effects-on not only the so·und but even the deaf Guianese. The roads are not many and very few have a bituminous su rface, t he majori_ty being constructed of burnt clay. With the growth of motorJtransport they are gaining great economic importance, yet thei r deplo1·a.ble condition during the rainy sc::ison makes t hem an unstable asset t o t ran portation. I can recall a gang of men working on the East Bank road at the espec ial task of pulling cars from mud-holes. But what is most vivid in my mind is a little 'QOY enjoying a swim in a small hole, havin,g been withheld from a larger one, most probably by the fear of drownin.g . · Aviation is the only possible means of contact t o many parts of the interior and affords great scope for the brightening up of the dark corners of the Roraima and the swbsequent ta.pping of our colony's resout'ces. But this form of t ransport i too ex;pensive for industrial ptll'lposes and can only take the initiative in the development of the interior; after thi , cheaper means must take it place.

B.G. may not have the city of gold, yet the resou1•ces which she, possesses are an El Dorado in themselve , they are even richer and greater. On entering the VB, for the purpose of supen ising for a period, I was surprised, indeed entirely overcome, by the sea of bewildering faces which c-0nfronted me. I had seen the individual members several times, hut, unfortunately, or perhaps, fortu nately, I had never seen them en masse.

As I sat down I wondered whether or not there wer e more t han six people;<, in our colony, for the difference between man and man in the VB was terribly shocking. Here indeed nature seemed to ha ve despaired of her work.

On the extreme right of the room sat "dark, dark, irrecoverably dark," "Burra," who always had you at the di advantage of never under tanding you, burra who •blames the '·tropic sun" for his complexion. provides with the tall silly-looking 'Skipp" on excellent study in 'black and white."

Almost in the midst of the motely crowd sat the "Fool" and "Bolger- a picture o;f unresisting im'becility. These two characters have, since their III Form days, carried on most stringent campaigns to prove each other a fool, a nd I must say that they have both s ucceeded nt all occasions.

The "C. · Trus" who alway· had a wid1e grin on his face seemed very keen on displaying the dentures left him by his late Uncle. The "Trus" who has been described as not tall enough fo1· a man and too old for a 1boy has ;perfected a system of pu lleys to ::tid in r emoving him lf fr m his "l0111g pants."

Man From The Past

Everything was still. The world seemed dead, and a merciless sun, in a. clear blue sky, beat down with terrifying intensity on the shimmering sands below. o living thing--except a few buzzards circling qu ietly in the sky above-could 1be seen in this de ·olate land. o one who had violated its dreadfu l monotony wi th his presence had ever lived to tell its secrets. It was a land of t he dead. It was Deaclman's Land.

But on this hot, sultry day, a tall figu re could !Je seen detaching itself: from the glimmering haze of the horizon and approach in,g the little town oti Wunern, -the last link between civilization and Deadman's Land. The figurei was t hat of a man on a camel-a man who was very tired and begrimed with dust, and who stared vacantly aibout hi unounding from lack-lustre eyes. He was Profes or Michael Fairdale, England's most eminent archaeologist.

Six weeks later, Prof. M . Fairdale was once more back in England, and here he wa acclaimed a hero by all hi friends and admirers. But to those who knew him intimately, he was not the same man who had left England a year ago. He had a vacant look a!bont him, and from a gay cheerful companion had changed to a dull, moody fellow.

Professor Matt Kellard, his uncle and clo ·est friend, noliced this change but he lightly pa sed it over as the effect of his friend's previous trip . . T hinking that a fe-M day amidst his former gay life would b:r ing his nephe\y back to himself, he arranged a iball in his nephew's honour.

Micha'CI enjoyed himself greatly at t his function. He seemed to be his real old self and his uncle, looking at him chatting merrily with some friends, knew no limit to his joy at this restoTation of his nephew's g-,ay spiri,ts. He beckoned to him and taking a seat on t he verandah, the two men ,w ere enjoying the fresh evening air when Meg, P rof. Matt's daughter moved acr oss to them.

"Hello, Dad, Michael," she said with a becoming sm il e on her face. '·Oh, hello, Meg, I hope you 1·e enjoying yourself," her falher replied, his eyes lighting up with paternal pride as he looked at his daughter. "My, what a lovely flower you ,.,.·ear. May I take a whiff of its d lectable fragrance'!" he laughingly aid.

' crtainly, Dad," and he handed him ,t he flower. Matt inhaled deeply aQ.d pa:sed it back to his daughter. "i\fay l," and Michael ·tretched out his hand. Blushing furiously, Meg handed Michael the flower, but as soon as h is f ingers touched it, t he flower wit}!ered up before their very eyes! Michael pulled aiway his hand with a low curse upon hi lips. ''Oh I'm sorry, but 1 forgot that the heat from my cigarette wou ld have such a disastrous effect on its tender bloom," he said f(U ickly, with a smile on his face, but :for one fleeting moment Matt was certain that he had seen sta1fk,

naked fear in the eyes of hi nephew. But Matt wa. too happy for such a11 incid nt to mar the beauty of the evening. He too laughed and oon the incident. was all forgotten .

The lasL guest left about eleven o'dock and Lhe men, aflel' saying "goorlnight" to Meg, went to their room.

"Mi,gosh, ,but l am; sleepy," ya,wned Mike as he cuddled between the immaculate clean bed sheets. ''Go Lo sleep, son," Ivlatt replied, "but I have some work to do. So don't wait up for me.'

The night was calm and quiet, and a sepulchral silence enveloped the whole house. The only noise breaking the silence was the echoing chimes of the grandfather clock toliing out th,e midnight hour. But sti ll Prof. Mi,ttt labou red on at his desk.

Suddenly, befo1,e the last chime of the hour died away, the silence of the room was shattered •by a sibilanl voice.

"Professor M,att !" it hissed.

Matt jumped up and with fearful eyes stared at a ight that made him recoil with horror. What he saw made him numb with fear, for he saiw- he saw his nephew, ,~ith a hangman's noo e around his neck, staring at him with baleful eyes, overfilled with hatred.

Slowly at first, then in one wift rush recogni tion dMvned upon Matt.

For the man ,b efore him was not his nephew but .. ·.

"Cr-r-Cr.aig !" he croaked.

"Yes Matt, its Craig. Ken Craig-the man you sent to the g.allows. The man whom you swore fidelity to. Yet you sent him to hi death. Yet you were the one who turned the world against me. But I swore vengeance Matt.

I told you I v,o,uld get you. For ten, loilJg year I waited, then at last your nephew-the great Prof. [ike Fairdale· dared to enter DeacLman' Land. J sarw my opportunity and l watched him die. Mike was very useful in getting me near you. And so, at la ·t I am here. I ihought ::i.t least that you would have suspected why the flower withered. But you were 'blinded .by your kepticism.

Ha! Ha! How could a dead man carry out his threat against you. But I am here, Mat. Here from the dead. Here for my revenge Matt!"

Slowly, but inexorably, the figure came forward. Then Iatt felt cold, clammy fingers encircling his throat-ifingers that gradually closed off his supply of oxygen. Matt felt himself falling down-down-down-into a bottomless well-and he screamed.

With a .p ounding heart Meg rnshed to her father' room. Flingin g ver th e door, she sruw her father, slu,mping in an unnatural position over his deskdead. And Mike Fairdale had disappeared!

Scotland Yard was called in and immediately a ·earch was made for Mike, but .i f Chief Inspector Teal was in Wu11eru he would have seen a man on a camel -a man who was dirty and begrimed with du t, but whose eye were bright and had a satisfactory gleam in t hem-the eyes of a man who had done his job.

And this man w,as proceeding, without a backwal'd glance into the desolate waste of Deadman's Land.

Today, Scotland Yard is still looking for Mike Fairdale and maybe they will find him-for who knows what the distant future holds. Do you ?

"Easter will be very boring at Aunt J udy," sighed J ohn, staring into t he fi re with his chin propped up on his hands. His sister Lucy suddenly looked up from the newspaper, "Say, look at this," she cried "Valuable sta,mp and coin collection stolen from museum, collection worth nearly two hundr'ed thousand dollars, a reward of lfour hundred dollars will be given to anyone who can replace it, -gee, I wish I could find that." ''Suppose the thief hid it in A untie's house and we were to find it?" asked Tom of his brother and sister. "That would be fine," exclaimed the two children simultaneously.

The three children, John, Tom, and Lucy were sons and daughter of Mr. a nd Mrs . Merr y, and were going to spend Easter with. their aunt.

"Well children, t ime to go to bed," Mrs . Merry sa id without looking up from her knitting.

' 'Wake up," cried Tom slapping John, " It's, time to leave." J ohn, yawn ing, sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. Sho a woke with a yell but soon star ted to dr ess when she was r eminded that it was lhe day for leaving.

Soon the children were eating and all talking of the same thing, the r obbe ry.

"The cab's here ma 'am," said t he cook coming in just t hen, and t hey all got up from the table talking an d laughing.

Soon the cab was driving along t he Jong winding lane that led to thefr au nt's house. On getting out, they saw t heir Aunt and Uncle coming to meet them, a nd that started the most exciting holiday that the three children ever went on. They had sa id that it would be !boring, but it was just the oppos ite .

They had forgotten all about the stolen collection un til one day t hey heal'd more about it in ike paper. This is what it said, 'Collection still missing. A man has been seen lurking about a lonely part of t he coun try called 'Rabbits Path' with a sack. H e has been chased, but he managed to csc;lpc.'

It was John who saw this and found out that 'Rabbits Path' was a simall wood, full of rabbits, and only a short walk from their Aunt's house.

It was 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. The sun was shining brightly and the three children were playing in the garden. Tom suddenly looked up and saw a man hurrying along with a sack over his shoulder. Tom aL once told the othel's and wilhout waiting to tell their aunt, they set off after the man.

The man walked on, straight for 'Rabbits Path.' There without hesitation, he walked right in Lo the wood. About the middle of the wood he walked straight inio a little shack which was in a small clearing.

Creeping up to it they peeped in and saw two men talking together. Ther were talking so softly that even Lucy, who had very sharp ears, onily managed to here one sentence. It was: "Ar-e you sure that that old house up the road is a good hiding place for it ?"

Although it was only .one sentence, ii was enough to tell John, what the two men were talking a1bout. So he called T om and Lucy out of the 'clearing, and said to them, "Because our house is the only one in these parts, it can only mean that the men are going to hide the collection in our house, and we arc going to find it.'' 'l'hey went back to the shack, but found that 1Jhe nnen had left.

"T hey must have gone to hide the collection," said Lucy, and the others agreed.

The next day, to their aunt's great annoyance, the childr-en seemed to be searc,hing for something and kept getting in her way. But they didi not find it. At last they went and sat in the s·ummer house, a very gloomy party. Lucy kicked idly at the dirt when suddenly her shoe stru ck something that sounded hollow. They looked at each other, new hope shining in thei r eyes. Could this be where t he collection was hidden ?

In silence they g·ot U'P from their seats and began to clear away t he dirt.

At last a traipdoor appeared and when opened the children found t hemselves in a small and very dusty room reached by a flight of stone steps. In the darkness they searched around and at last Jack touched something thaL felt like a box. He told the others, and they went up in the light with the box (as it turned out to be), opened it and :found part of the missing collection. They went down again and soon had the balance of the valua·ble collec,tion brought to light.

The end of the holiday had come. The children had handed over the collecion, and the police had caught the thieves. Imagine their parents surprise when they heard that their children had won four hundred dollars. They wanted to tbuy lots of th ings, and when taken out shopping, came hOlme laden w1th parcels. They even ):lad money left over for Christmas, and in the whole town, I do believe they were the happiest children.

A groan. A sigh. Jones used almost his entire vocabulary ncquired as a teacher, to utter a prolonged cu rse-then slumped d j)onclently onto Lhe floor.

"Hal.f an hour left for school! ' barked Mrs. Jones, thl'Usting a cup of cold coffee in Jone"' direction, tirring him vigorously with her foot at the same time .

Jones arose briskly, seized the cup, gu lped the contents dmrn his eager gullet, and hastened away grumblin g to prepare for school.

"This tyranny ! thi slavery!" he grumbled.

''This . ... "

Jones glanced at the mirror before him; slowly he turned around to face the object of the r eflected image.-Mrs. J ones stood there with a cool. calculating air, as if recall cting all that she had just overheard. She rai ed a hand.

Tvw teacups came flying in Jones' direction, quickly followed by a dang-erousl:v swift-travelling fryin g pan ... . · For once Jones ent t"tainecl the rather risky desire to retaliate. The untimely attack of two saucers, however, weaned him from th i temptation, and he rt'solved to slink from ight.

A dark rainy morning. Jones' head-lamp flickered out dimly as his bicycle · creaked and groaned to a noisy stop at his school on the suburbs of the city.

A group of boys were contending among themseh es that sound travels faster than light. The schoolmaster stopped, thought, listened and went awayrealising that h\s own bicycle defied the Jaws of physic to uphold that theory!

The bell was rung. The first lesso11 being history, Jone pupils as "The Duke") arrived on the dot of time.

Jones paused and swallowed meditatively. The boys shuffled uneasily in thefr seats. One boy, who had once Jived two houses from Jones whispered something to his desk-mate. The whisper :tecame contagio us. The form was soon in an uproar. Occasional words as "Dukey," "flying saucer ," "Mrs. Jones," reached the schoolmaster's ear. He reddened; stamped furiously for immediate si1ence, and rid himself of his coat (the feared signal that the entire form would be caned) . Silence C:}Uld not pt·event the inevitable. The whispering now developed into a general chaos . . ..

Jones worked himself up to a frenzy, and commenced to undertake t he great task of caning thirty boys!

By a hasty mathematical calculation in the height of fury,. he decided to use the method of p,rog1·e sion, and started by seizing "Big en" as his first victim.

Silence wa re to1·ed. The grimnes of the ~jtuation was now realised.

Ben whimpered unde1· pressure, seeking, in vain, con olation from the tense faces of his form-mates.

"Here am I trying to impart to you the little I know and .. .. "-A realisation of what he had adually aid, struck Jones, and he swallowed the rest of the entence in an infuriated gulp ....

The f irst blo~v descended. Ben ascended. As a matter of fact someone else was now ascending-up the stairs; heavy footsteps were audi1ble. Part of the for:m found enough courage to gaze through the open door-and gapect, at the pectacle 1 Mrs. Jones was rushing angrily into the room, head ing directly toward.: her hu. band ! 'The second blow failed to register on the expectant "Big Ben.·, At last he fe1t the cane fall- indfective]y though, wi h no force, no momentum.

Ben glanced up. M1· . Jones had almost reaohed her husband now. Jones' hand wavered fearfu lly in mid-air. He showed an embarrassingly humiliating tendency to slink under the desk: but manly pride prevailed.

"So you actually left home thi morning without informing me!" screamed Mrs. J.ones, advancing rapidly. Jones expressed no de h'e to commit himself to making any verbal reply, but was content to issue one or two queer sounds that blended n<'!atly wit h the creaking of the floor under hi wife's heavy tread.

There's No S-chool Like No School

It was 9 o'clock and Mr. Ram was sleeping. To some men rest is a routine of life. To Mr. Ram rest is a periodical due ature O\ves him. He was the most educated master on the staff of Qucy Boys' School. And, even more dramatically significant now, he was in the Vb. Ever since fa. Ram Sarbryam Ram attended a college of aviation and had done ome useful work (of times far into the shades of night) upon the shoes of a.n eminent professor , he had shown undeniable prei:ensions to education. And, he had since added a distinguished seriei;; of five noble failures at the M.A. (Lond.) . It was the type of career t.o which no other master a.t Qucy could lay claim. And still much more dumbfounding was Mr. Sar's boast that he could read Greek, think in Latin and peak F1·ench all at once.

The form VB was the usual form of its kind. It was unenviably blessed with twenty-five metal voids, whose age and size led one to conclude that they were under the influence, the full ebb of manhood, strength and old age. Some time, in the dim past the V,b had dropped French. Neither the ;principal nor the French Master was honoured with the news of this hi ·tol'ical event. But the Vb did not t hink this strange. S ince, t hey argued, t he p rincipal did not know many other important things a.nd the French Master was not important enough to kno:w thing , any1Way.

It wa a cla h of the ·e two opposing elements, education and Vlb, which we are to witne upon a Wednesday morning at nine. Mr. Ram still slumbered.

There was every reason why he should. What with the soothing lullaby of B. Ull's heavy foot, pounding the floor in time to a version of 'Kitch take it easy,' which ,mig.h t have left the compo er at a lo s to recognise his own work, anyone would seek to snooze. Then there was C. Tru s ,rapping gently loud upon the desk and K. \ mon pointing out with sweet eloquence, across the room, that 'yuh awright.' If it had not been for a characteristic tick of his watch which reminded Mr. Ram of the fact that -i t was 10 min . to the end of his le on and therefore time to begin teaehing, he would have slept on like a muscle-less babe !

Springing, however, from hi sleep, in which he had been counting 'pecudus' (sheep), he shouted at B. UU. "Que voule7.-vou s, lowc?"

The Vb was bewildered. It had vague recollections of having hf)ard some language like that before but they just c·o uld not place it. Then, Mr. Ram m i ght have been speaking any one of tl1e many langu,ages he knew or experimenting with any of the many others ,h e didn't kno,w. The boy spoken to, thou,g ht possibly it might be French and he feverishly ransacked his mind for the one French word he used to remember. Then, at last, through a torrent of beaded perspirations, it came.

'N aturellement' he sa,id with a victorious smile, spelling it in his mind "N'a•' tu rellement.' The form grinned. Somebody said something about B.Ull being '1,harp like peas.' But consternation was to follow. Mr. Ram grew angry.

'I'll throw you out.' He got up .and brandished his fists . By George, it was a pitiful sight. He had little ,brain. But, ye gods, his brawn was veritaJbly infinitesimal. B. UII stood six .foot in his shoes and grinned. He had no brains either but he boasted of 167 pounds of muscle.

'I won't have it' cried Mr. Ram Sar. He approached. 'I am going to count from 'unns' to 'centum' and if you are not out of here I'll throw you out.' The last words were spat out with all the characteristic vehemence of a feeble M.A. B.Ull grinned again . A voice said 'Fight.' And, Mr. Ra·m began his count.

'This is a joke,' said B. Ull : 'I hope,' thoug,h t Mr., Ram furiously to himself, ·he walks out and makes things easy for me. After all my weight lifting is not so up to date. In my time, I have only pressed 15 pounds. He began to perspire. He counted up to twenty, got in trouble with the Latin numerals, changed to French, got into more trouble, then resorted to English.

30, 31, 32 ... 'If he doesn't walk out, at least the bell will go' poor Ram Sar hoped. B. Ull grinned. Mr. Ram wi1ped his forehead, found he remembered the Latin for 'forty,' said it and then continued in English. B. Ull turned around to discuss with T. Son, some adventure which he na.med 'encounter wid the lil piece ole boy.' And, Mr. Ram reached fifty through a downpour of perspiration and all the dilatory tact:fos he could muster.

Then it happened. B. Ull walked right out. 'Give the ole boy a chance,' he said to himself. Mr. Ram mopped his forehead, profusely. He smiled at the form.

'I don't like ,boys like that.' 'I would have thrown him out myself,' he said, displayin,g a skeleton body, the sight of which might have sent a thrill of joy into a Biology Master.
