The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

THE NOTE
No. 59
S
ummer in the Carolinas is my absolute favorite, and for so many reasons: Here in the Queen City, our favorite rooftops seem to come alive, as crowds gather to take photos and selfies at sunset. BB&T Ballpark serves up amazing views of the skyline and a damn fine hot dog while Charlotte’s breweries are as lively as ever. Local bands play music and beer enthusiasts sip on a new, hoppy creation while the Rail Trail is packed with walkers, bikers, and happy pups heading to Futo Buta (for Shortino’s rice crispy squares on the patio) or some other delicious South End spot. The city has a buzz about it that I just love. Right outside the city, our lakes — Norman, Mountain Island, and Wylie — are rockin’. They are truly the place to be on the weekends. Whatever summer activity you enjoy — boating, tubing, jet skiing, wake boarding, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming, whatever… is truly at your disposal. Then, as the sun sets, if you aren’t too sundrenched, you can head on over to a place like Hello, Sailor for delicious hushpuppies and a tasty slushie and enjoy the view! Or, if you prefer to get out of the city for a couple days, just hit the road to experience the many places that make Carolina a true destination. In this issue, we feature three epic road trips, including a 90 mile adventure from Asheville to Boone on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a slow drive down Highway 17 to while away in the Lowcountry, and an Old North State coastal cruise from OBX to the Crystal Coast. Lastly — if that’s not enough adventure for you — we share our favorite local summer experiences with you, including the Heliventures Charlotte skyline helicopter tour which is one of the best things we’ve done this year! So, until our next issue — The Food Issue — apply lots of sunscreen, and get out there to enjoy the dog days of summer in Carolina. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor | Brett Barter, Publisher

Till July 11, 2019 Respite This group show at Sozo Gallery, featuring works by artists Dottie Leatherwood, Paul Norwood, and Marissa Vogl, opens Friday, June 7 with a reception from 6 - 8 pm. The curated collection of work by three unique landscape artists is centered around places and spaces that offer a respite from the busy world in which we live. Whether that be various spots amidst the Lowcountry as depicted in works by Leatherwood and Vogl, or any refuge along the East Coast portrayed by Norwood, this group show should invite the viewer to retreat to a place of peace, if only for a brief, blissful moment. When you see a finished piece, it’s easy to assume the art was created with slow, deliberate movements — as if it followed a single vision from beginning to end. But for most artists, including Melissa Herriott, that’s not how the process actually works. Melissa Herriott doesn’t just sit down and decide she’ll craft a masterpiece; she zealously experiments with her media, pulling inspiration from a myriad of sources as she does so. “My process isn’t fancy,” says Herriott. “It’s not natural light beaming through windows… It’s late at night, with empty coffee cups and the occasional wine glass.” The results are nevertheless incredible — stunning swirls of ink and acrylic flowing in vibrant, unexpected ways. “I like feminine colors with dark touches,” notes Herriott. “I love gold. Gold paint, gold leaf, give me all the gold. A lot of my pieces are also inspired by nature, like water, sunsets, and foliage.” But Herriott didn’t always paint with this level of dedication. In fact, until recently, she hardly painted at all. “I took a 20-year hiatus from creating art,” admits Herriott, “and then I picked up a paintbrush again on July 15, 2018.” The spark that reignited her painting passion came in the form of a high school reunion, when she found herself standing in her old art classroom.

“My art teacher used to let me stay after school to paint. Some nights, I’d stay so long that I’d walk out with the custodians as they were leaving to go home, too.” That reunion triggered a wave of memories for Herriott, including those from the death of her childhood friend, Frank. To keep him close, she often paints while wearing his old artist uniform—a pinstripe button-down embroidered with the name “Jim.” “Losing people too soon gives you an appreciation for life,” says Herriott. “My friend can’t create anymore. I can. It’s not fair, but it does help me remember to go for it.” Now, after overcoming illnesses and obstacles of her own, Herriott paints with reckless abandon whenever she can, sometimes in five-minute sessions, sometimes in five-hour ones. Along with inspiration from nature, Herriott also draws inspiration from uncommon art forms. As a self-proclaimed HGTV and

fashion junkie, Herriott gets ideas all the time from furniture, mid-century modern architecture, and clothing. In fact, Herriott found herself turning to fashion for inspiration so much that she started her own fashion blog, ModaFresca. As her work evolves and she expands her business, Herriott plans on continuing to experiment with ink and acrylics. “My technique changes all the time,” says Herriott. I may use water, I blow air through a straw, or use a hair dryer… other times, I don’t manipulate the painting at all and just kind of let it create itself.” You can find Herriott’s current work for sale on her website, along with more information about her mediums. As for Herriott herself, you can find her blasting Jay-Z in her apartment, surrounded by canvases and coffee cups. And, of course, that occasional wine glass. info mherriottart.com @melissaherriott

As consumers in an economy driven by mass production, it can be so easy — even convenient, at times — to forget how the products we purchase spring into being. For Mary Hamby, a Charlottebased maker of wearable art and sculptor under the umbrella of her business Twenty Two West, the process of production is just as important as the product itself. “The techniques I use to create my work have their roots long before me, and my goal is to bring them back to the forefront of people’s minds and, more importantly, lives,” says Mary, who creates finished pieces entirely from raw materials. “I think there is beauty in the process from start to finish.” To the observant eye, the difference between mass-produced and handmade goods is stark. At Twenty Two West, every detail of every piece is considered, resulting in high quality goods with individual personalities. “For me it comes down to creating pieces that go into people’s homes and lives, and can add charm, whimsy, and character in a way you just cannot with mass-produced items.”

“I am never done making. Even if I were to fulfill all my orders, have everything in its place, and be up to date on billing, my mind would still be going. I will still be creating.” Mary has felt a compulsion to create ever since she was a child growing up in South Carolina. “I was always making things,” recalls Mary. “I was drawn to many different media, like sewing, hand lettering, crocheting, knitting, photography, pottery, basketry, painting, drawing... you name it!” She proceeded to study interior design in college and enjoyed working in the industry for a time but, as Mary says, “my hands were dying to get back to making.”

Although her days now start with clay and threads and are punctuated by forming, firing, combing, and weaving, the skills she developed while studying interior design still seep into her work, shaping her “aesthetic toward character-driven art that has a clear focus and an emphasis on texture.” Mary is resistant to the fickle trends of fast fashion, which serve primarily to drive sales and can quickly lead smaller operations to burn out, so she limits the release of

With their unique boutique workouts and fashionable activewear offerings, Fit Atelier has elevated fitness in the Queen City. words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
50 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
Fit Atelier—started in Dilworth and now recently reopened in their new location in Charlotte’s South End—is a business built around a simple principle: Encouraging locals to get fit in fun, new ways while wearing some of the most fashionable athletic clothing. The business, led by sisters Melanie Morton and Brit Turner, serves as a retail hub for high-end, chic indie activewear lines and the fitness programming layered on top allows them to partner with local studios, as well as to bring in celebrity trainers from places like New York City and Los Angeles. Trainers from P.volve, Body by Simone, and Hilliard Studio Method are just a few they’ve featured in-house. Brit moved to Charlotte from NYC shortly before starting Fit Atelier. There, she had spent the previous decade of her life working in beauty and personal care public relations and marketing. Melanie, meanwhile, was a medical social worker for the last seven years. She graduated with a BSW in Social Work from Appalachian State. Nonetheless, the two grew up harboring a love of fitness and sports, so, slowly but surely, their curated concept for a retail shop-meets-studio emerged. Now, with all their energy poured into their buzzing fitness/retail concept, the two can regularly be found hosting innovative workout classes, curating clothing brands for exercise styles that range from barre to HIIT, and expanding their store’s wellness section; ensuring there is an outfit and exercise offering for each stylish, fit enthusiast who walks through the doors.
The Culture // Wellness
“We’re not just a store, and we’re not just a studio.” Melanie and Brit chatted about the company’s recent expansion and successes. How has Fit Atelier evolved since its opening in 2017? Brit: Atelier is the French word for “workshop,” and we deliberately used that word because we always want to be evolving what happens within the walls of Fit Atelier. Over the last year, we've picked up new brands that we're really passionate about, worked closely with local trainers to develop new, unique group class concepts, and grown our team. We are always listening and looking for feedback from our community, so we plan to always evolve. What are you most proud of about Fit Atelier? Brit: I'm proud that we've built something different from what's already out there. We feel like we’re in an incredibly interesting time of wellness and fitness. Workouts are the new form of entertainment, and our clothes are the new “going out” outfits. Southern women are chic and discerning and want to be wearing something special, even if they’re not going somewhere special, and mall brands are just not special or appealing to our modern, fit clients.
52 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
What is the most rewarding part of the business? Melanie: I get excited when I see how our clients feel when they wear their new outfits for the first time or after one of our workouts. I also think it's really rewarding to watch our clients turn into regulars. Who in the style and wellness world inspires you? Brit: I'm most inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow; she was at the forefront of a major revolution in wellness. I also really look up to Emily Weiss of Glossier and Jen Atkin of OUAI. I also feel super inspired by the trainers on our team. Melanie: I really look up to Lisa Vanderpump. She’s merged business with style in an entertaining way. I also really look up to Melanie Whelan, the CEO of SoulCycle. What classes do you offer? Are beginners welcomed? Beginners are always welcome! Our instructors can modify for any level of fitness. Right now, we have three classes: West Kept Secret — a high intensity interval training class that incorporates elements of pilates, cardio, and strength. It

Handcrafted Foods at The Pickled Peach Inside Jen Jentz’s Davidson mainstay. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

There are two tousle-haired, blue-eyed boys who rule the play areas of Main Street in Davidson. On sunny days, you’re guaranteed to spot them flinging their little bodies down the slide in the Davidson Tot Lot or rolling down the grassy knoll that abuts the back patio of The Pickled Peach. Their baby brother, also blue-eyed though not yet tousle-haired, can often be found inside, strapped to the back of the boys’ mother and The Pickled Peach owner, Jen Jentz. The boys’ constant presence is just one of the many charmingly quirky qualities of this farm-to-table cafe, market, and restaurant. Tucked into a one-story, blue brick building and decorated by Jen herself, the interior is tastefully dappled with handmade decor, like the embroidery hoop ceiling art. Jen and husband/co-owner Travis Jentz have always nourished a passion for food. They originally moved to Davidson not knowing whether they would found a farm or a restaurant; The menu reflects their thorough appreciation for how the quality of food is affected by where and how it’s grown. Peach ingredients are almost exclusively organically or locally farmed, and many offerings are health oriented. Everything on the menu, which features soups, salads, and sandwiches, can be made gluten-free (most items already are), and the menu has a wide selection for vegan and vegetarian customers, including the White Bean Hummus sandwich, a winning combination of white bean hummus, spinach, avocado or mozzarella, and balsamic reduction wedged between two mouthwatering pieces of grilled sourdough.

The menu creations are masterminded by Jen and Head Chef Pierce Schaaf, who began his culinary career as a prep cook at The Pickled Peach when it opened five years ago. In fact, many of the kitchen’s helping hands have followed similar trajectories, wading into the food and beverage waters as Peach dishwashers or prep cooks and, under Jen’s tutelage, developing a taste for the culinary arts. Their masterful menus are best paired with one of the craft sodas, local beers, or thoughtfully selected wines on offer, and you’d be ill-advised

to pass up one of The Pickled Peach’s delectable desserts that beckon from a nearby case as you place your order. Until last year, indoor spaces at The Pickled Peach were dwarfed by the restaurant’s outdoor spaces, where most seating options are located, including a climate controlled patio and picnic tables in the grass where the Peach boys play. However, in 2017, the business sharing a wall with the Peach closed and the Jentzs purchased the space. Travis tackled the renovation project, which resulted in the addition of a market, where

Spanish in South End The beloved Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar finally lands in Charlotte, and there’s no shortage of reasons to be excited. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE
Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar has locations from Colorado to Georgia, and now this sliver of Spain has nestled in South End, dishing out its signature tapas and offering a selection of hundreds of wines from all over the world. “What we bring to locals is a European escape,” says President of Barcelona Wine Bar, Adam Halberg. The little local spot that began as a 38-seat wine bar in 1995, opened by two people passionate about Mediterranean culture and cuisine, has grown into a national operation that plants pockets of Europe in happening neighborhoods, like Charlotte’s South End. “As soon as we visited South End, we felt an instant sense of compatibility — the vibrant community, the unique architecture, and the overall electric buzz of the neighborhood from the collection of shops, breweries, restaurants and other local businesses,” says Halberg.
64 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
Every Barcelona Wine Bar pays homage to the regions that inspired its creation, incorporating decor that conjures the sophistication of places like Milan, SoHo, or Rio de Janeiro, while still leaving space to incorporate each host city’s personality. Part of that personality peeks through in the menu offerings. “Each Barcelona Wine Bar has a sizeable portion of the menu that gives the executive chef room to be creative and draw inspiration from local and seasonal ingredients,” explains Halberg. “Executive Chef Nicolas Daniels and Josh, our general manager, have been embedded in the Charlotte restaurant scene for years. They bring relationships with great local farmers, spice mixers, and fishmongers to the menu. We change the menu daily to highlight those seasonal flavors, while also staying true to the simplicity of Spanish-inspired cuisine.”

“As soon as we visited South End, we felt an instant sense of compatibility: the vibrant community, the unique architecture, and the overall electric buzz of the neighborhood.”
Quintessentially Spanish tapas like jamón and manchego croquetas, fabada, patatas bravas and mains like paella combine with flavors lifted from the cuisines of Portugal, North Africa, and the Riveras of France and Italy to create a truly cosmopolitan taste fusion. Although the food is outstanding, Barcelona is best known for its wine selection. With 400 bottles to choose from and special attention given to wines created in Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, and Argentina, there’s enough variety to satisfy even the most finicky wine connoisseur. Guests who are interested in exploring new wine frontiers before committing to a bottle can select one of the 48 by-the-glass options, or broaden their horizons with a wine flight. Barcelona staff members are capable guides no matter where you are on your wine expedition. “Our bartenders and servers are happy to make wine recommendations (both by the bottle and by the glass) based on what type of wine you’re in the mood for or to pair with your tapas selection,” says Emily Nevin-Giannini, Beverage Director of Barcelona Wine Bar. Like the best Mediterranean meals, the Barcelona menu is engineered to promote convivial gatherings, where dinners last hours, food and beverage are shared, moments are seized, and company is held in the highest regard. Whether you want to dine al fresco with your neighbors, sample something new at the bar with your spouse, or treat your parents to an evening of exceptional ambience and cuisine, Barcelona beckons. info barcelonawinebar.com/location/charlotte @barcelonawinebar

Chanthavong sources only the highest quality fish for his packed house, and created a menu that evokes O-Ku, but is also unique and well-suited to his new locale. A carryout case beckons to customers pinched between meetings, with pre-made options like the crunchy Pow Pow Cali Roll (tempura crab, cucumber, avocado, masago), the sweet and spicy Tuna Wrap It Up Roll (Bigeye tuna, spicy tuna, cucumber, sweet soy, sriracha aioli), and the decadent Fugo Lobster Roll (poached lobster, beets, asparagus, cilantro aioli, volcano salt, and squid ink rice). Or, pop by after work for Sukoshi’s half-off happy hours, when all display case items are priced to make space for tomorrow’s delicious deals. The restaurant, named with the Japanese word that means “a little,” is small in square feet and offers congruent “little bites” for a lighter lunch fare. We find it particularly difficult to resist the Yum Yum Dim Sum—dumplings stuffed with pork gyoza and served with scallion dendashi dipping sauce that are as cute as they are tasty.

For the hungrier diner, Sukoshi offers a “big bites” menu served over greens, rice, or mega maki style (picture a sushi burrito), and is chock full of creative flavor combinations like tuna and Asian pear, Scottish salmon and avocado cream, and steak and wasabi aioli. Gluten-free and vegan modifications pervade the menu, and all dishes can be ordered ahead of time for take-out or in-house dining via the Sukoshi app. The masterminds behind Sukoshi even found a way to bring O-Ku’s popular Omakase experience to the lunchtime crew. With a reservation and a half-hour to spare, diners can indulge in multiple dishes, hand-tailored by the chef to the customer’s taste buds. Most say it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in a field. The Crunkleton in Charlotte has only existed for a portion of those hours, but the cocktail bar and restaurant effuse skill and passion that come from decades of tradition that began at the Chapel Hill institution. The bar, designed like a mixology library, tells a story of traditional drinks with a contemporary twist. The Jungle Bird, made with two kinds of rum, Campari, lime and pineapple, is fruit-forward yet well-rounded. Finished with a pineapple garnish and a shave off of the pure H2O ice block behind the bar (made by one of only three machines that exist in the world), this cocktail culminates The Crunkleton atmosphere in a glass. Punch For Lunch words LIZA CARRASQUILLO photo JAMEY PRICE
Businesses in Charlotte might be growing fast, but there’s one type of business that’s already taken over: Breweries. Unlike other areas where breweries seem to follow the same monotonous trends, most Charlotte breweries have worked hard to keep their quirky independence. Resident Culture Brewing Company is no exception. Their Punch for Lunch, for example, exemplifies the greatness that can occur when a brewery isn’t afraid to experiment. This sour Berliner Weisse is made with bright, fresh peaches, mangos, and raspberries. While each fruit is prominent in the beer, it’s the raspberries that truly take center stage. Instead of lingering with an aftertaste that’s too sweet, the raspberries give the Punch for Lunch a tart, refreshing taste that balances out the peach and mango. With a beautiful pink color and artsy can design, this light beer will look just as tasty on your Instagram as it does next to your lunch. — info — residentculturebrewing.com @residentculture

As I began to understand what life looked like without her, I felt a shift in my perspective. I needed more out of my life from both a professional and personal standpoint. I needed fulfillment. I started my business in 2015. I’m one of four kids, and I think about the relationship I have with each of my siblings. Those relationships have impacted my “story,” and that was the genesis of the name, Four Story Interiors. How would you describe your personal style? I’m very much a mesh of California meets New York. I love the laid-back, organic aesthetic of the West Coast, but I’m also really drawn to the edgy and unexpected modern touches seen so often in New York. That translates to how I decorate my home. Open, airy, organic, lots of texture—but with modern elements that keep it from feeling too light.
The Folio // Foundation
Can you describe your client process? I try keeping things simple. I meet with potential clients to talk about their design goals and what they’re looking for. This helps me determine if we’ll be a good fit. I believe a great design relationship has to be mutually beneficial. If the client is ready to move forward, I come back for a more indepth meeting and we take it from there. What advice would you give to people looking to freshen up their home in a simple way? The first thing to do is edit! A few years ago, I read Marie Kondo’s book and it changed my life. She talks about saying goodbye to things that don’t bring you happiness. David Rudel’s CutChopServe makes heirloom quality goods with up-cycled local wood. words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
When David Rudel saw a need, he didn’t hesitate to meet it: The former corporate ladder climbing businessman transitioned, purposefully, into a role characterized by community, conservation, and creativity. His Charlotte business, CutChopServe, was founded in late 2017. Today, they represent a fully custom woodshop that upcycles hardwood by building cheese, charcuterie, and cutting boards, chopping blocks, tables, bars, built-ins, and wall art/ signage. Their speciality is building heirloom quality goods by using reclaimed lumber and recycled materials. Under Rudel’s guiding mission of becoming an environmentally-friendly, sustainably-run company with a positive influence on the surrounding community, the team focuses on connecting supply chains to eliminate the disposal of felled hardwood lumber in and around Charlotte that would otherwise be converted to waste. Rudel gives rescued lumber a second life.

When and how did the business start? It was when I was in Kuwait, sweating from the scorching heat and surrounded by sand, that I made the decision it was time for a change. I spent six years ascending the corporate ladder, creating international business opportunities for the oil and gas industry, but the void between my purpose and work had never been greater. I found I was completely unfulfilled and battling a moral conflict between my work and my interest in the health of our planet. I decided my life's work needed to have more positive impact. Coming from a commodities background, I had taken notice of another commodity — hardwood lumber. As Charlotte continued to grow, our diverse and plentiful tree canopy was being cut down to accommodate new construction. Here's the kicker: Companies were spending money to throw the trees away. I thought that there must be a way to work myself into this supply

“Mother Earth needs our help, and we’re determined to be part of the solution, not the problem.” chain and divert some of that lumber from the dump and into my hands. I spent about six months on the phone with tree companies, wood shops, saw mills, and arborists figuring out how to do so before starting the business. Mother Earth needs our help, and we’re determined to be part of the solution, not the problem. How did your interest in this field first begin? As a child, I was always 100 times more interested in building the perfect bike ramp than actually jumping it. I would look at things and immediately try to deconstruct and reconstruct them in my head, and I was the only one of my friends with a shed full of saws, drills, clamps, and lumber. I've always been a builder and creator, but I never thought this passion could morph into my livelihood. What sets CutChopServe apart from other wood shops in the area? Our mission is founded in making a positive impact, and we plant a tree for every sale, with the aim of planting 1,000 trees by the end of 2019. I've found myself building more items at a more attainable price point in attempts to boost volume (in terms of number of sales). I also work with quite a few restaurants, from Ballantyne to Concord, supplying serving boards and flight paddles. Finally, it's a priority of ours to partner with and volunteer with as many community organizations as possible. I’m a Tree Ambassador for TreesCharlotte and am participating as a sponsor with an upcoming Big Brothers and Big Sisters disc golf tournament and fundraiser, and we’ve donated to countless charities. What drew you to woodworking? Regarding the products I build, nothing beats the organic beauty of nature itself. There's something mesmerizing about the undulating live edges of a tree. That's why you'll see lots of them in my work. However, as I'm also a bit of a math geek — I love patterns, straight lines and perfect angles — I love incorporating the organic elements of nature alongside the rigid and defined worlds of geometry and math.

Charlotte is a growing, vibrant city that radiates energy every day. But what happens when that energy becomes a little too much to handle? Like most overwhelmed city dwellers, finding solace in nature is a good start. The homeowners of this Pellyn Wood home, landscaped by Abate Design Group of Charlotte, took that idea a step further by creating a private outdoor oasis in their backyard. The Pellyn Wood neighborhood, located in South Charlotte, is far enough from the city to get away from the crowds, but not far enough to feel completely surrounded by nature. To remedy that, the homeowners hired Michael Abate, founder and owner of Abate, to design a custom outdoor paradise that would surround their soon-to-be-built custom home. Abate began by drawing out the goals of the client and expanding upon them. They wanted to revegetate the site, and they wanted something more unique than the average deck and landscaping combos seen throughout Charlotte. By ex-
panding their landscaping plans to encompass the backyard, front and side yards, Abate would surround their custom home with a one-of-a-kind garden island. This garden island balances its heavy greenery with stunning hardscape features, including a covered outdoor terrace and an outdoor kitchen. Of course, no outdoor kitchen would be complete without a pizza oven direct from Italy. Tying these entertainment areas together are the pool and spa, which act as anchors for the backyard space. Once the designs were complete, Abate Design Group partnered with a variety of local contractors, including Arborscapes Inc. and B&B Pools, to take on the construction work. Kingswood Custom Homes also helped with the design to ensure that the new house fit the property perfectly. With the construction done and the pool open for the summer, this home has been transformed into a flawless retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Classically Modern from the Inside Out words RACHEL DRESSEL photo METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS
Located in Huntersville, this Monterey project sits in dynamic luxury. The project, completed by Classica Homes, was not only designed for looks, but to fit a modern life. Classica creates homes of function and versatility, where some spaces combine and others disappear completely. This idea is exemplified by their covered outdoor living room. The backyard is one of the most underused spaces on a homeowner’s property, so this concept captures the comfort of a home’s interior and seamlessly incorporates the Carolina outdoors. Classica has created a new space for families and their guests to gather, where they can enjoy the outdoors in comfort or venture out and experience it together. With its use of natural tones and blue accents to blend the
outdoors into the interior, this “room” is understated but inviting. The blue textiles incorporate a damask-like pattern into the space, which whisper florals into the space without exactly mimicking nature. The windows across the living room and great room blend each space, but the wood versus brick flooring and tonal differences keep each room uniquely defined. Vaulted ceilings in each room further construct a hybrid space, where you can take in the airiness of the home like a nice deep breath. With designs meant to be both comforting and active, a Classica home takes advantage of each space and encourages the homeowner to do the same. This is a space that’s wide open while keeping everything you need right within reach.

An Outdoor Oasis words RILEY COHEN / photos MICHAEL BLEVINS
When a local family began itching to renovate their expansive backyard into a transitional outdoor living and entertainment area, Alair Homes was eager to get their hands on the space. After tedious collaboration between the homeowners, architect, designer, and landscaper, placement of the fifteen-by-twenty foot inground pool and cabana were officially made, and the space’s foundation was literally set in stone—Pennsylvania Bluestone to be precise. Round tapered columns with Tuscan caps frame the covered living space made complete with a Luna split fireplace and cedar-stained mantle as a focal point, creating the airy yet cozy entertainment area that the homeowners so desired. An easily accessible outdoor bathroom was incorporated
into the mix, including Aurea Paragon polished quartz countertops, custom cabinets, and Grigio field tile flooring. The space is finished with a functional kitchenette featuring custom cabinetry, lagos pearl quartz countertops, and reclaimed Buckingham slate. With Marvel appliances, including an undercounter refrigerator, ice machine, and beverage cooler, a refreshing summer cocktail is effortlessly within reach. The cabana’s cool, neutral tones combined with vibrant landscaping contribute to its effortless tranquility. Custom lattice fencing provides privacy to this outdoor getaway, completing the transformation of this backyard into a proper athome retreat.

From Shanghai to Quiet Waters A couple creates their lakefront Shangri-La where life approaches perfection. words DENISE LORRAINE DAVIS photos METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS

I
In this global economy, it’s not surprising that a couple living in Shanghai researched and purchased the ultimate private Lake Norman setting to build their future lakefront home from 7,600 miles away. It would be several years later that they would begin to design and build. Steve Kromer, a now retired executive and his wife, Susan, owner of Susan Kromer Design, say their decision criteria involved proximity to the airport, “While we had a lake place in the Ozarks, it was too remote. With our air travel requirements for both business and pleasure, we wanted a place close to a hub airport,” Susan explains. The sprawling six acres in Mooresville was originally three separate land parcels, one containing a fire-damaged, abandoned meeting house. The couple successfully donated the building to the Troutman Fire Department for a burn down training exercise — a brilliant way to save money on demo, receive a tax deduction, and provide a service to their new community all at the same time.
106 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
There was a significant amount of land work that needed to be done as the drive was too steep. “Even with the size of the property, due to the significant grade changes, we had to be creative about maximizing the width needed for the house and garages,” Steve recalls. Over 5 ft. of elevation was removed from the building site to accomplish that. Kearey Builders was chosen, because of their extensive commercial experience. “I liked that,” asserts Steve. “We wanted to work with a builder who could handle the large scale of this kind of project and terrain. We needed to bring in a 600 ft. driveway, while maintaining and saving as many native hardwoods as possible.” J’Nell Bryson Landscape Architecture got involved early assisting with siting the home, designing the driveway, guest parking areas, retaining wall, and exterior hardscapes. The Kromers worked with Frank Smith in a collaborative design process. “They were looking for a Lake Tahoe transitional, Californian vernacular and explained the lifestyle features they were looking for extremely well,” remembers
Frank. “The design focused on creating a floorplan flow that invites visitors to wander, explore and experience.” The estate is 12,000 sq. ft. under roof and 8,400 heated sq. ft. with four bedrooms, six baths, and three powder rooms. Walking through does feel like an experience as each living space is so magically tailored and unique unto itself… despite being connected with such simplicity and peaceful ambiance. “We like to entertain, so we wanted space and flow with plenty of room for guests. We also wanted to maximize the amazing view in every room and integrate the surrounding woods into the design elements,” notes Susan, “Frank designed the long foyer with glass to allow for a full view of the woods in front of the house as well as through the house to the lake.” The end result is a home that blends several architectural features and styles that come together in a cohesive manner: in short, a lakeside masterpiece. The high standards of this project required assembling the best team of experts and craftsmen. Both Frank Smith and
Kearey Builders highly recommended Insight Automation to handle all the security, networking, sound, and motorized shades and drapes. Music was the biggest focus and this residence has a Sonance sound system featuring the ultimate expression in architectural audio: Invisible speakers inside the ceiling in the great room and a powerful outdoor landscaping speaker system. “We installed about 20,000 sq. ft. of cable on this project and we had to drill into the concrete in order to hide the speaker wire,” explains Insight Automation's owner Esbith Andaya, “The property also boasts a Savant Pro system that has the capacity to run a 206-room hotel. The Kromers wanted no ‘wall acne’ and nothing old-school. They control everything with their phones and devices.” J’Nell Bryson Landscape Architecture contributed much to the outdoor living aspect of the home, including designing the planters near the house to separate the doors from each room into different zones as well as the lowered firepit and the design of the sofa around it. “The idea was to have the feeling of

several outdoor ‘rooms’ that were visually connected and would accommodate an intimate group of two to six guests to parties of 50 or more,” explained J’Nell. Susan Kromer Design handled all the interior designs and details from designing custom-made cabinets, trim, railing and making selections such as LaCantina multi-slide glass doors and Jen-Weld exterior doors. The custom cabinets are really a step beyond what anyone would consider a custom cabinet to be. When you look at the SKD-designed cabinetry in the great room, kitchen island, and master bath vanity, you would not even know they are cabinets. The designs are so beautiful and visually continuous within their context, that the functionality, and even the doors themselves, are completely concealed as a decorative surface. Susan takes custom cabinet design to another dimension of expression and aesthetic; and clearly has a big talent for hiding things through her artistry. Throughout the home, you can see how living in Shanghai has influenced her. “The fretwork on the hidden master bath cabinets is a nod to Asian influences,” she adds, “I also added trim to the wall that showcases a tribal dress from Guangxi Province to lend some texture and interest without taking away from the art piece.” One of Susan’s favorite places in the house is the kitchen: “We cook together, and the layout allows for several areas to prep and for lots of people at the same time. I didn’t want to see any appliances beyond the gorgeous French Lacanche range, so a lot of them are either integrated with cabinet-finishing or in the scullery which shares a wall and bi-fold interior LaCantina serving window with what we call the Living Porch.”
108 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
The Kromers take particular pride in their Living Porch. They liked the idea of grilling indoors during the winter and opening retractable LaCantina doors in the summer creating a covered patio-style living space. The wall behind the grill is framed with metal studs and the floor underneath it is porcelain, so that everything that surrounds the grill is non-combustible. They installed an oversized 60” vent above the 36” grill. Insight Automation installed the remote-controllable motorized French Somfy shades. “The shades can be controlled from your phone or by simply talking to Alexa,” Esbith explains. From the artfully camouflaged sound system and cabinets, one could say that Quiet Waters has a lot of hidden functional elements and details throughout the home, so that all you experience is the beautiful setting, architecture, art and furnishings. This is indeed a home with mystery and intrigue for the senses. Like a destination hotel, the Kromers have absolutely thought of everything to the last detail for their perfect Shangri-La. “We drink coffee on the master loggia every morning and enjoy the birds and lake. The swinging couch is a great place for a cocktail at the end of the day to watch the sunset, read during the day or even take a nap,” Susan shares. And if it were possible to create a Shangri-La inside a Shangri-La, Susan did just that for her fashion photographer daughter, who lives in LA: “Her aesthetic is very SoCal Bohemian, so I created a space for her that she would feel at home in when she comes to visit.”

Living on this land is fun, too. Steve has his own man-garage filled with his toys and gadgets. One of them is a four-passenger John Deere Gator to take visitors and “things” down to the dock; and take care of the property. “Both of our dads were farmers so the Gator easily doubles as a farm vehicle in our dreams,” explains Steve, who proudly adds, “This guy will easily haul 30 bales of pine straw!” The Kromers created a 1,500 foot path for the Gator down to the lake. And there’s three times that of drivable four wheeler terrain on their land. They also have a 200 foot walking path down to the dock that drops about 40 feet in elevation. “That’s why I refer to it as
the tree house!” laughs Frank. “It has spectacular perch-like views from every vantage point.” As Steve gazes lakeward while sitting on another SKD-custom designed water ski Adirondack chair (the skis are those he once learned on), he gets reflective about their journey together: “Shanghai was an amazing metropolis of 22 million with everything one could want in culture, dining, and shopping within walking distance. We lived in a stunning highrise apartment right in the heart of it all. It was the best life, but one thing it could never match is the natural serenity and beauty of our new home, Quiet Waters.”

When you find yourself surrounded by trees that pop with color like fourth of July fireworks, on a hill overlooking placid waters that reflect not only the blue sky but the mountains all around you, you’ve done something right. That’s how Lucy Armstrong felt in 1915 when she built her estate on Lake Toxaway in North Carolina. Over a hundred years later, her home has grown and become an elegant testament to the passion she felt for the area, The Greystone Inn. Its elegance is immediate to the eye. the inn's stone facade of mottled gray. The architecture evokes turn-of-the-century glamour that has evolved to embrace modern simplicity. Swiss mountain chalets inspire the large square windows and gray board siding with white trim. The estate was privately owned until 1985 and underwent many renovations. Its most recent improvement occurred after the property exchanged hands in 2015. The Greystone Inn closed its doors in January of that year as it underwent a multi-million-dollar restoration. It reopened in May 2018.

Spend your Carolina summer waterside this year. words ELEANOR MERRELL photos JP GRICE
In the South, summer means laketime, especially in North Carolina where our many lakes are located in or around protected land. Consequently, we’ve garnered a reputation for breathtaking environs and enviable cleanliness. There are lots of locales to choose from, so we’ve narrowed down your options to the six best lakes NC has to offer this summer.
Lake Norman With a surface of 50 square miles and a shoreline of 520 miles, Lake Norman is the largestman-made lake in the Tar Heel state, offering a range of entertainment befitting its behemoth size. Ogle the multimillion dollar homes lining its shores, ski uninterrupted for miles along its expansive surface, or drop a line to tempt a black bass or crappie. Leave time to dock at Hello, Sailor and enjoy retro charm and lakeside views over a Carolina Shrimp Calabash platter and Cherry Lemon Sundrop Negroni Slushi.
118 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE / JULY 2019
High Rock Lake North Carolina’s popular High Rock Lake, is a fisherman’s paradise. Largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, three types of catfish, black crappie, white crappie, and bluegill populate these fertile waters. Lakeside marinas are at the ready to meet every fisherman’s needs — from bait to tackle to boat rentals and more. Not a fisherman? Not to worry: High Rock Lake is nestled in the midst of North Carolina wine country.

The Explored // Adventure Lake Lure Lake Lure is arguably North Carolina’s most famous lake. Its luscious shores appear in Thunder Road, The Last of the Mohicans, A Breed Apart, and, most famously, Dirty Dancing. This manmade lake hunkers down in the Hickory Nut Gorge, where it is surrounded by Blue Ridge mountains and lies in the shadow of Chimney Rock. Lake Fontana Sandwiched between the Great Smoky Mountains and Nantahala National Park, Fontana Lake owes its existence to a dam on the Little Tennessee River. Because it was formed quickly and artificially, centuries of erosion never had a chance to flatten the lakebed’s topography, resulting in a treasure trove of inlets, islands and coves. Lake Fontana also offers access to some of the most remote parts of the national parks that are otherwise only reachable via multi-day backpacking trips. Jordan Lake Jordan Lake, located just south of Chapel Hill, offers a beautiful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Queen City. Commercial and residential builds are prohibited from the shoreline, meaning visitors are treated to a true respite from the work week. Instead of sitting in traffic, sit on the edge of your campsite, absorbing the beauty of this natural setting.

A life well-lived is one that makes time and space for singular experiences. Perhaps not every day — commitments, responsibilities, and routines are, after all, just as integral to a life well-lived, or at least well-adapted, as the extraordinary. But those who can make a commitment to shaking things up once a month (or, better yet, once a week) are likely to discover new facets of their character or rediscover long-forgotten traits. In the Queen City, one of the best ways for Charlotteans to broaden their horizons (literally and metaphorically) is to get in contact with Heliventures Charlotte, which offers regional aerial tours via helicopter. Although Charlotte’s skyline might not yet be as iconic as the skylines of New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, or Seattle, skyscrapers like the Bank of America building, Hearst Tower, the Duke Energy Center, and One Wells Fargo Center certainly make ours a competitor. When viewed from a chopper, these skyscrapers become even more breathtaking, as oglers develop firsthand appreciation for the heights those steel spectacles reach. Heliventures even offers a sunset tour that enables riders to ascend into the skies at dusk and appreciate the skyline bathed in twilight. In addition to tours of downtown Charlotte, Heliventures also offers tours of Lake Norman. Riders are treated to skyside views of the lake’s deep blue waters and green coast lines. Discover hidden beaches and residential palaces not easily found by boat or backroad. Or, if the lake isn’t your cup of tea, take a Heliventure tour of the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Check out the track, stands, and arena from vantage points scarcely imaginable from the ground.

From Charlotte, drive east across the state to North Carolina’s seashores. By starting your coastal tour in Emerald Isle, on Highway 70, you’ll get to take in both the Crystal Coast and, later, connect to Highway 12 in the pristine barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. Although only 90-some-odd miles separate the two towns, the drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to just outside of Boone, NC, for me, is not one you should start and finish in one day. Hell, it's not even a two day trip. I know it's been touted by countless media outlets as one of the best day trips you can experience in the state, but in my opinion, there's far too much to see. If you do it in 24 hours, you really aren't doing it justice, and you will, without a doubt, miss a whole bunch of really beautiful things. From stunning overlooks to photograph, hikes to sweat on, waterfalls to cool off under, and Appalachian culture to soak up, this is the right way to do one of our favorite road trips ever: Milepost 385 to Milepost 276.
Wednesday Night Asheville The first part of this trip requires you to get from wherever you are in Charlotte to the Land of the Sky, better known as Asheville. Commit to leaving work a little early for the long weekend, hop in the car (that 's already packed of course), and drive two short hours to your first mountain town destination. Then quickly check in: Grand Bohemian and Omni Grove Park are staples with comfortable rooms and world-class hospitality. Once the bags are in the room, and you've stretched your legs for a halfhour or so, it's time to hit the town. Head

to downtown for supper at Chai Pani or The Marketplace, or to trendy West Asheville for Gan Shan West or The Admiral. After dinner, make a champagne stop at Battery Park Book Exchange or a chocolate stop at The French Broad Chocolate Lounge (or at both which is what we really recommend), and end the first night with drinks at either Sovereign Remedies or The Crow & Quill. Now, that's the sophisticated way to start an Appalachian road trip. Thursday Asheville to Little Switzerland Wake up early and hit the road to your first stop, Asheville's Hole Doughnuts,
Upper Wilson Creek
for a deliciously fried, sweet start to your day. Then your Blue Ridge Parkway adventure begins. Your first stop is at Milepost 382 — the Folk Art Center, home to the Southern Highlands Craft Guild — to see some of the finest Southern Appalachian crafts on display anywhere. After you take in a live craft demonstration, head north to Bull Creek Valley Overlook, one of the first long-range views in this stretch of the Parkway and an area where the buffalo once roamed. Nine miles north, you'll find one of the best views on the entire Parkway: the parking area for Craggy Gardens. But don't just stick around the lot: Instead, go left away from the crowds and towards the thin hiking trail that takes you down through moody rhodendron tunnels to the gardens. Heading the other direction from the lot takes you to epic views from the nearly 6,000 foot high summit of Craggy Pinnacle. Both are short hikes of about a mile-and-ahalf to two miles round trip and are worth taking several hours to experience. Once you finish both trails, get back in the car and make your way to

the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi: Mt. Mitchell. At Milepost 355 you can take the road up to Mt. Mitchell State Park, where a simple walk from the parking lot to an observation deck affords visitors of all ages and hiking abilities 360-degree views of nearly the entire Carolina Blue Ridge. If you're already in the mood for another walkabout, trails abound in the park includng the Balsam Nature Trail and the Deep Gap Trail — a hike that leads people to four peaks over 6,000 feet in elevation. If not, head to your next stop, Crabtree Falls, where a gorgeous 15 mile drive will take you to the trailhead. Here, one of the state's prettiest and secluded waterfalls awaits. The hike is a two mile roundtripper so pack water and a snack. After checking off Crabtree, it's time to relax. Drive to Switzerland Inn at Milepost 334 to unwind after your busy first day. The Chalet Restaurant onsite is known for delicious fare and for the magical golden hour views from the terrace. Enjoy a beer or glass of wine at The Fowl Play pub before heading to bed.

Friday Little Switzerland to Blowing Rock Wake up early, hit the Chalet for round two — breakfast — and then start driving. The first notable overlook you'll encounter in this Parkway section is the Bear Den Overlook, a place that gets beautiful morning light. Here, you can catch low fog and the layers of blue hills in the distance. Next up is one of the most popular hikes in the High Country. At Milepost 316, turn onto Spur Road and head to the Linville Falls Visitor Center. A two-and-a-half mile hike down the Linville Gorge Trail, and then the Plunge Basin trail leads you to the lower falls where you can see it in all its glory. Another trail to the right of the Visitor Center leads you on a mile-anda-half round trip hike to the upper falls. After you've worked up an appetite, a post-waterfall lunch sounds great. Nearby Linville obliges with two good options, the Tartan Restaurant and the Old Hampton Store & Barbeque where you should order the Carolina Style. After lunch, hop back in the car and drive towards my favorite

mountain, Grandfather. Milepost 305, the Beacon Heights parking lot, has beautiful views of Grandfather as well as a casual mile round trip trail to two beautiful rocky vistas. Next, simply detour off of the Parkway and venture up 221 for five minutes until you get to the entrance of Grandfather Mountain. Yes, it costs money to get in, but if you haven't been before, it is so worth it. The mile-high swinging bridge, the Nature Museum, and the Wild Life Habitat are all perfect for families. For those looking for another hike and are a little adventurous, take the Grandfather Crest Trail up a series of boulders, ladders, and cables to MacRae Peak. As sunset nears, there is no place more iconic to be than the Linn Cove Viaduct (the cover image). Park about a tenth-of-a-mile passed the bridge and walk back along a small trail towards the viaduct. With Grandfather Mountain to the South, Hawksbill and Table Rock of Linville Gorge towering in the layers on the horizon and Rough Ridge to the North, this location really does have it all.
Rough Ridge Views
With twilight approaching its time to call it a day. You'll have to hightail it to Blowing Rock (passing some amazing stops that you will backtrack to the next morning) to get a good dinner, some cocktails, and a good night's sleep. We recommend keeping it easy: stay at Chetola Resort and eat on site at Timberlake's restaurant. If you'd rather hit downtown for dinner we recommend making your way down Wonderland Trail to Bistro Roca for a truly delicious experience. Saturday Blowing Rock to Boone This last day of driving features what I think is the very best views on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. Grab a quick breakfast at your hotel in Blowing Rock, and then head south eleven miles to pick up where you left off, at Milepost 303. You'll want to start this day of the trip off really early to catch sunrise at Rough Ridge. I know, that's before six a.m. and you're on vacation, but trust QC Exclusive. This beautiful two mile round trip hike leads

visitors through rhodondenrons to a rocky peak and platform with what are seamingly endless views. Next, head seven miles north to Price Lake enjoying incredible vistas along the way. Once you arrive at the overlook, either make a short stop to take in the reflective view of Grandfather Mountain from the bridge over Price Lake Dam or stop for a longer adventure and walk the trail around the lake or go for a kayak. Just a mile north of the lake, you'll find Julian Price Memorial Park and the Boone Fork Trail which is a long five mile loop that's worth doing in its entirety. The highlight of this trail is Hebron Rock Colony, a series of plunge pools and large boulders, about three miles into the hike. Milepost 294 is a picturesque stop for sure. The Moses Cone Manor is a historical home featuring 3,600 acres of forests, meadows, and carriage trails. While you're there be sure to visit the Parkway Craft Center as well. You'll probably be hungry at this point, so as you pass back through Blowing Rock, take a short detour to our favor-
Thunder Hill Overlook
ite litte BBQ spot, Woodland's, and enjoy their delicious hushpuppies. Wash it down with some tasty sweet tea, and then hit the road for your last stretch of pavement. Just three miles north of Blowing Rock, you'll stop at a stunning overlook known as Thunder Hill. Get out, snap some pics, and just relax for awhile. Your last stop on this Blue Ridge road trip is one I think a lot of people skip. The Cascades Trail is just north of Highway 421. It's a short one mile loop through dense greenery that descends 250 feet to an overlook of a sliding Falls Creek. It's an easy but beautiful way to end your Parkway drive. Once you're back at the car, head south towards Highway 421 and then make an important decision: A) turn left and make your way home to the Queen City or B) turn right and stay one more night in the mountains at Boone's brand new boutique hotel, The Horton, which luckily for you, also has a rooftop bar where you can celebrate your journey's end. I trust you'll choose correctly.

Pawley's Island Creek
The “Lowcountry”, a 200-mile stretch of coastal South Carolina and Georgia composed of tidal marshes, rivers, estuaries, and the Atlantic Ocean is an area with a tight bond to the waterside lifestyle. And, when it comes to experiencing this area and its many towns and cities, you have a drive on your hands that should be made slowly, in true summertime Southern style. Set aside your vacation days, pack up the car, and head down the Carolina coast.
Pawleys Island From Charlotte, head south, connecting with Highway 17, to land first in Pawleys Island. Located on the end of the Grand Strand, this picturesque seaside destination is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Pawleys boasts pristine marshland, palmettos, and Cypress cottages, and the food on the island is phenomenal, from the quaint Chive Blossom cafe to the fresh seafood dives. If you’re looking for nightlife, catch live blues at the Island Tavern or the Clubhouse Pub. town just far enough from the buzzing city of Charleston to provide guests with a quiet, relaxing experience. McClellanville was established in 1706 as a portion of St. James-Santee Parish, and today, its history of rice plantations, southern architectural homes and buildings, and rich culture remains woven throughout the area. With a population of less than 1,000, guests can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the fishing docks and piers, where bodies of water promise bountiful fish. The nearby Francis Marion National Forest offers even more beautiful scenery. Isle of Palms After soaking in Bluffton, make the wide stretches of beach in Isle of Palms your
next outpost for a few nights. Rent one of the many beachfront offerings, and stake out your sandy spot for the day. Grab dinner at Coda del Pesce for traditional, upscale Italian, or try the Southern-centric Lowcountry Kitchen for something more casual. During the day, head over to the neighboring Sullivans Island for a change of scenery: Bonus points if you get there by boat. Sullivan’s Island Nestled at the mouth of the Charleston Harbor, Sullivan's Island (at just 3.3 miles in size) is an inviting mix of peaceful beaches and plentiful watersports, local restaurants and shops. Visit Fort Moultrie for family-friendly sight-seeing, and grab lunch at Poe’s Tavern. Downtown Charleston Depending on your tolerance for the city versus your penchant for the beach, make a few day trips into downtown Charleston, or book a night or three at one of the Holy City’s many well-located,

beautifully-appointed downtown hotels. We love Zero George, The Dewberry, Vendue, and Hotel Bennett, to name just a few. Charleston allows you the best of both worlds: slow, scenic strolls through its colorful, historic streets with relaxing, luxurious accommodations, coupled with a vibrant food scene, bustling nightlife, and on-trend King Street shopping.

wildlife make this unlike your typical coastal town. Refuel with Blackstone’s Cafe.
Folly Beach A short drive outside the city of Charleston, this barrier island, often nicknamed “the Edge of America,” is equipped with everything you’re looking for out of a beach vacation, from the pier to deep sea and river fishing, and the surfing, kayaking, and dolphin watching. There’s good food, fun bars, and plenty of sightseeing on Folly. The weekend brunch at Lost Dog Cafe keeps us coming back year after year. Pack up your bags and get ready to head south again, this time for a two-hour drive down Highway 17 to Bluffton.
Bluffton Call Bluffton home for what’s nearing the last leg of your trip. One truth about the South is that time simply moves slower, and that couldn’t be more true for Bluffton. A staple of the Carolina Lowcountry, Bluffton is perched directly above Savannah, Georgia on the mouth of the May River. This is a town that has a tight bond with the water, the beaches, and the way of life that comes along with it. Although a recent surge in development has made it the fastest growing town in South Carolina, Bluffton still has history to show, and in spades. Old Town in particular weaves the modern face of a long standing town with the strong, weathered churches and homes that have anchored the town since the mid 1800’s. Rent a local home or go all out and stay the nearby Montage resort, for what’s arguably the best luxury lodging experience in the greater area.
Beaufort Before Bluffton, stop for a few hours in Beaufort. Founded by the British in 1711, Beaufort, South Carolina boasts the amazingly conserved Gullah culture of Beaufort’s African-slavedescended citizens, and the various related historical sites that populate the quaint coastal town. Although Beaufort now offers exciting opportunities to golf, fish, bike, kayak, and soak in the rays of the sun along its ocean waters, the city’s defined history and its dedication to preserving the diverse
Hilton Head Finally, end your trip in its southernmost spot at Hilton Head Island, a classic vacation destination for good reason. It offers 12 miles of pristine beaches, 24 world-class golf courses, forest preserves, and moss-draped trails. As far as dining goes, Hilton Head has some 250 restaurants, plus bakeries and farmers’ markets, to choose from (fresh, local seafood is always in good order). Enjoy your last few days lounging beachside, exploring the area by bike, and soaking in a few more sunsets.
